Vacu Vin Pineapple Easy Slicer, set of 3 blade sizes.

Vacu Vin Pineapple Easy Slicer, set of 3 blade sizes. After reading the high marks this was given, and because I have and like using other Vacu Vin products, I ordered this. Living in Hawaii, I have easy access to excellent fresh pineapple. After 30 plus years of cutting up the fruit, I've developed a quick method for getting the job done--but it IS somewhat messy to do. (Also thought it would be neat to have the option of using the shell to serve dessert or a drink.)

BUT it totally mangled the fruit! In retrospect I might have anticipated this, for the following reasons:

1. The cutters all are plastic, and using them to cut a fibrous fruit--and the even more fibrous core--is similar to using a plastic knife in lieu of a real steak knife: It can be done, but it's an effort.

2. Yes, I tried each of the cutters. All had the same sized core-removal portion, which is way too small for the pineapples I buy here; only the outer diameter on each of the cutters varies.

3. Not only does this gadget assume that the core will be relatively small, it assumes that it will be VERY straight and very centered--a mistake, for the core often is slightly off-center and often widens near the base.

After ten minutes, I gave up on this gadget and did what I normally do: Got out two cutting boards (one for the cored wedges, one for the original fruit, then used my trusty 20 cm (8 inch) Wusthof Trident serrated bread knife in the following steps.

1. Cut off the prickly top of the pineapple with a margin of 1/2 to one inches

2. Cut a slice off the bottom, with about the same margin. These two cuts give you a nice flat end, top and bottom.

3. Cut the pineapple first into quarters, then into eighths

4. Remove the core from each wedge (easily visible from the side) by standing it on end and slicing it top to bottom

5. Remove the outer pineapple "skin" and "eyes" by standing each wedge on end and slicing off 1 cm (3/8 inch) of the outer skin. This is the trickiest part, learning to cut along a gentle curve.

The resulting product is 8 tidy wedges, which you can slice up or serve individually. They are great in fruit salad, make awesome additions to kabobs--if they last long enough. From our pineapples, I generally have a yield of three pint containers of sliced fruit per pineapple.

In summary, until Vacu Vin comes out with a metal version, and addresses the core size issue, my advice is to save your money and put it towards a really good serrated bread knife, such as the Wusthof Trident. In the end it will get you as much as 50% more fruit and you'll have a knife that will give you years of service.

However, if you are totally dedicated to getting a shell from your pineapple, chat up the bartender or manager in one of those bars that sells tropical drinks with umbrellas and ask them where to buy a metal corer. Aloha!

I bought one of these for my wife, and I must say, I'm amazed. I love fresh pineapple, but hate the bother of cutting it up, and making sure you don't get any of the core or the woody part. This impressive little invention does it all for you, and quite rapidly, as well. It's the type of gadget that can be used right out of the box, within a minute of looking at it, and it works right every time!

Highly recommended!

Alright, I don't know how really fresh the pineapple is in Michigan, but they sell it at the grocery store. My family just loves fresh pineapple, (the canned stuff can stay in the can), but it is such a hassle to try to clean and core and slice the pineapple. NOT WITH THIS gadget!

In less than one minute, I can peel, core, slice and serve fresh pineapple rings, with very little mess to clean up afterwards. Even better, the shell remains intact for use as a fancy serving bowl along with the watermelon bowl! We are having fresh pineapple more often, and the memories of the Hawaii trip are discussed each and every time the perfect pineapple is served.

With three different blade singes, almost all pineapple sizes are covered. A great little gadget for the price!

It's a bit awkward to use at first but once you get used to it, it's very useful. we were able to get a good cut the first time. it's important to pick the right size center piece to make sure it's clean on the edges, i would recommend this to people who like fresh pineapples or entertain a lot, great for a party for that bartender wanna be..

The price is right for what it gives you. one more thing to stick in the drawer.

UPDATE:

lower the stars.. not only do i not use this anymore.. can't find it.. got a pineapple cutting knife on last vacation to hawaii.. beats this thing hands down

Overall, I think this product is pretty useful and far less work than cutting pineapple with a knife. I purchased the version with multiple cutting sizes to accommodate different sized fruit. If you find cutting pineapple a chore and have room for one more gadget in your kitchen, you will probably appreciate this product. I really like this product for the quickness and ease of "gutting" most of the fruit from a pineapple. However, it's effectiveness does depend on how ripe your fruit is and whether the pineapple is firm or soft. If your fruit is pretty ripe and softening, then this product is a little bit messy and may "crush" your pineapple. If your fruit is quite firm, you may feel like you're getting an arm workout. But either way, with this item you can be snacking on the the heart of the pineapple fruit in two or three minutes which is pretty cool.

Wusthof Grand Prix II 10-Inch Long Slicer

Wusthof Grand Prix II 10-Inch Long SlicerDefinitely better than using a Chef's Knife if you want to smooth cuts. I did a catering gig without a slicer and we were doing roast beef. While it wasn't a big deal, it would've been nicer to have slices without that sawed look

Bought this knife from amazon 2 years ago. It has never lost its edge and rarely needs anything more than a few passes on the steel. This is a top quality product which my wife (a semi-professional cook) uses constantly even when I think a smaller knife would do. I/we can recommend it without reservation.

Finally, I've found my slicing knife. I have been looking for a long, thin slicing knife for slicing meat and poultry and for filleting and skinning fish and this is it. After being horribly disappointed with Kerhsaw's "Kerhsaw Precision Forged Stainless Steel 8-Inch Slicing Knife" and shopping Victorinox, Dexter (Made in China, very sad for the American company...) and whatever else happened to catch my eye while I was out and about, I found a great deal on this knife at my local restaurant supply store. Fit and finish on this knife are top notch and it came super-sharp out of the box. It's a forged blade, a bit thin and flexible and does the job nicely. It feels good in the hand, it has a nice shaped handle and cuts whatever you have like buttah with a long, smooth stroke. You could probably also use it as a sword in an emergency if you happened to misplace your katana and needed to fight off some ninjas, or Dolph Lundgren.

People If you are looking to buy something like a knife, spend as much as you can afford to get good gear and don't waste your money on crap. That way, you only have to buy it once. I picked this up for quite a bit less than Amazon's price, but even at $100.00, over the course of a lifetime, the cost is next to nothing. My kids or grand-kids will be arguing over who gets this thing.

Wusthof Made in Germany, not China (Not USA either thanks Kershaw and Dexter...) Well crafted, beautiful and does the job it was made to do exceedingly well.

I was familiar with this brand because I just moved from Germany and I am very happy with the quality of this knife. I just started culinary school and this brand was recommended by several of the chefs for those that could afford them. I am glad that I made this investment in a tool that I use daily.

Kasumi 84020 - 8 inch Carving Knife

Kasumi 84020 - 8 inch Carving KnifeI am a sushi chef that has used many knives in my day, and I would like to say that this is the best knife for rolls I've ever used.

It's well balanced, and retains a great edge (Rockwell Hardness Rating of around 60).

When I first got it, it was sharp, but then I took it to the whetstone and it took the knife to a whole new level.

I've used many knives behind the bar, from cheaper knives to the Shun Pro line, the Miyabi 7000 line, and the Misono UX-10 line (Which are all Great Knives!)

But every time I'm at work, I prefer to use this one (when cutting rolls).

The only complaint I have on this one (8 in.) is that the tip of the blade is very curved, which I wasn't used to, but i know with time and sharpening I will shape the edge to my preferred setting.

Thanks for reading, and I recommend this knife!

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin Pro S 2-Piece Promotional Chef Set

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin Pro S 2-Piece Promotional Chef SetIt was sheer luck that I needed an 8" chef's knife to complete my wife's kitchen while this promotion was available. We already had a 3" and a 2¾" bird's beak so we didn't need a paring knife but the addition of a 4" is quite welcome. The price has dropped seven dollars since I purchased this set only a week ago but it's such a great deal I can't complain.

Henckels Twin Pro-S knives are outstanding quality. The blades are strong and stay sharp for years. The balance point is right where the bolster arches back to the handle. The knife is heavy but effortless to control because it seems to float in your hand. I prefer it to the weight forward construction of other brands. Our Twin Pro-S 6" chef's knife is over fifteen years old and has never been sharpened, only honed on the steel. It is still razor sharp and is my wife's favorite knife for slicing tomatoes in spite of having newer and more appropriate knives for that task.

You can't beat the quality for this price. These are probably the two most useful and most used knives in any kitchen. A great starter set or addition to any cutlery collection.

Replacing all my chef knives taken by ex-wife (who doesn't cook !?!?!)a good deal on some old and reliable friends

I was looking for knives that would do the job and take abuse from the family. The price was right and these knives are working out quite nicely. An excellent bargain.

I was tired of using pointy dull cheapo steak knives that I must have had since college. But when I looked at most steak knife sets, they were pretentious or rosewood or garish. Rosewood will look nice at first but will not last long if permitted to soak or put in the dishwasher. And how is that not going to happen? It certainly wasn't in my house.

These knives, with their rounded tips and plastic but solid plastic handles, seemed different and I liked the difference. And once they arrived, it was only a few days before we decided to replace our regular butter knives, with their meager 'teeth', with these. They function just as well for spreading butter or dipping mayonnaise out of a jar, but when it comes time to actually cutting meat or poultry (not just steak!) on the plate, they perform better than plain old butter knives. I don't know how we did without these knives before, but we're definitely shoving the old cutlery knives to the back of the drawer.

These were a gift for my father-in-law and while I believe he likes the knives, the condition they came in were horrible. The knives came in two separate boxes that were taped together and the boxes were covered in dust like they were in someones garage for years and they just wanted to get rid of them. Also the plastic of the packaging was broken and shattered (and I know they were shipped like that because the box had bubble wrap in it). Also one of the knife handle had a crack in it. Luckily the knife didn't seem like it would break because of it so we just decided to keep it because returning it would be more a hassle. Needless to say we had to take the knives out of their packaging and put them in a zip lock bag (we didn't have anything else to use) to give to my father-in-law (that was my husband's idea anyway). Pretty embarrassing.
