Stelton EM77 Vacuum Jug, 33.8 oz, red

Stelton EM77 Vacuum Jug, 33.8 oz, redThis is nothing short of beautiful. I own 3 of them, two large and one small, all in Stainless Steel.

The carafe is easy to use, and you can even fit most conventional plastic filters over the spout to make coffee right in the pot. I bought my coffee filter, along with the carafe in Denmark, but I think you can use the Alfi Aroma 3-Part Coffee Filter that should fit. The construction is solid -this will hold up for years. My Danish in-laws use their Stelton pot daily and have had it for many, many years. The Stainless Steel is brushed, and not the cheap kind you get in some other carafes. This is high quality stainless -durable and beautiful.

The only criticism about the carafe is that the it does not keep hot liquids as long as I would expect -after an hour or so, that piping hot coffee is no longer piping hot. I did use it everyday for years, but then decided on a carafe that is better insulated (Bodum). I still use the Stelton -mostly when entertaining. It's a beautiful carafe -traditional minimalist Danish design at its best. It's among the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan.

I use my Stelton to make pots of tea. It stays piping hot for hours and is economical (one tea bag per pot). Love the design and nice red color.

BergHOFF Gourmet Line Santoku Knife, Black/Silver, 7"

BergHOFF Gourmet Line Santoku Knife, Black/Silver, 7'As soon as I received this item, I started using it to cut Steak, Potatoes, Carrots and other veggies. I was amazed how little effort was required to slice these. The cuts were so precise that the cut portions stuck to the knife blade, so one has to develop a technique which slighly pushes the cut portion away as the knife descends through the meat or whatever you are cutting. Just be very very careful since this knife has a surgical-quality blade and you want to keep your fingers intact ;-)

J.A. Henckels Twin Five Star 6-Inch High Carbon Stainless Steel Wide Chef Knife

J.A. Henckels Twin Five Star 6-Inch High Carbon Stainless Steel Wide Chef KnifeHenckels has always produced an excellent product. The 5-star line is their latest innovation. Not only does the high-carbon steel blade take an edge and hold it, but the ergonomically-designed handle is a real bonus. These are worth the price!

After years of buying mediocre knifes I finally begged for this one for Christmas from my wife. Wow! worth every penny. slices and dices like a dream.

Great knife. If you take care of your knives, and keep them in a case in the drawer, these will last forever. I only own two knives, this one and the 7 inch Santoku. I use the Chef's knife the most! Recommend getting the plastic cases which will protect them in the drawer. The handle and balance is great. Haven't even sharpened it yet. Washes easily. I have small hands which is why I went with the 6-inch as opposed to the 8-inch. Don't buy a knife block with 9 knives. Just buy a good chef's knife and a pearing knife and you'll be good to go.

If you only had one knife to choose this should be it. The size is perfect for most of your kitchen chores. I currently own between 15 and 20 henckels knives of differing sizes and shapes and i find myself using this one much more then alll the others. The quality is typical henckels.Perfect balance, easy to work with, durable, etc. ,etc.

If this one ever wears out i wouldn't even consider another brand or style but would immediately buy another

Kuhn Rikon 11-1/2-Inch Serving Knife, Silver

Kuhn Rikon 11-1/2-Inch Serving Knife, SilverI was at my sister-inlaws and used this knife for the first time. It cuts through anything like butter! She received it as a gift and loves it. I went home and purchased a bunch of knives by this line including 3 of these serversKuhn Rikon 11-1/2-Inch Serving Knife, Silver. For the first time I am able to cut perfect slices instead of sawing through food and coming up with a mess. This is a must have in any kitchen!

This is one handy-dandy gadget. It cuts and serves the lasagne or casserole so only one tool is needed at the table. The cutting edge is very sharp so the included sleeve is wonderful to have when storing your server in a kitchen drawer.

It is sturdy and doesn't bend when tranferring the food to the plate, and the handle is thick and comfortable.

Wusthof Classic 10-Inch Wide Cook's Knife

Wusthof Classic 10-Inch Wide Cook's KnifeThis is a great knife, which I happen to think is well balanced and offers a lot of stability.

It is however a very large knife which some might find unwieldy or too heavy. It is significantly bigger than the standard Classic 10" chef's knife.

More importantly, because of the knifes height (width), the blade itself is very wide and would not fit in any standard knife block I could find. In the end I bought the super knife block from Williams-Sonoma and took a router to widen the cleaver slot.

I must say this is one fantastic knife. It is the knife I usually use when prepping a meal (sandwiches don't count). When I purchase a knife, I always personally sharpen it, so I can't really speak for the factory edge, but it accepts and holds an edge wonderfully. Having the extra wide knife (along with added heft) has more of a curve to it allowing for an easy chopping motion. I have purchased Henckel Pro S in the past and, after noticing a couple of flaws that passed their QC in my expensive knives, I will never purchase one without personally inspecting it first. Wusthof has much better QC so I have no problem ordering them through the mail.

FYI-This knife needs a large cutting board and a serious knife block to hold it. I personally use the Wusthof 25-slot "mega" block and it fits in all three of the top chef knife positions. Overall this knive is an investment, but you will love it!

Don't let the size or price intimidate you, this is a great knife for the kitchen. I'd been using an 8-inch chef's knife for years because that's what came in a set. But it left a lot to be desired for chopping up even medium size quantities of food. This 10-inch Wusthof has been one of the best upgrades for our kitchen.

The handle feels just right and the balance is superb. The shape of the blade is perfect for a rocking motion that lets you quickly chop and mince. Of course the quality of the steel is legendary so this knife holds an edge and will last. Considering how frequently this knife gets used in the kitchen, it's a great investment.

The right chef's knife for you is a matter of personal preference, and with knives first impressions are not always lasting. You may be tempted to choose a lighter sleeker model. The size and heft of this knife may be a bit off putting at first. But if you are committed to using correct technique, you will soon fall in love with this blade for those very same reasons. While a cook might reach for this knife out of habit for any number of chores including those for which it was not designed, most often it will be used to chop stuff. This is the original food processor.

With your fingers curled away from the blade the knuckles of your holding hand confidently ride the wide flat surface of this blade. Meanwhile the knuckles of your knife hand are well clear of the cutting board. For greater comfort, I have ever so slightly relieved the edges of the bolster, but I have never owned a knife (with a bolster) that didn't benefit from the same treatment. The blade's ample mass keeps it steadily on line without a hint of flex or wobbles. Because the knife adds its own heft to the down stroke, you will not have to push down into it with the same forces you would need on another knife. This makes it safer. At 58C on the Rockwell scale, the chrome moly steel in this blade is an excellent hardness to take an edge keen enough to shave with and strong enough to chop wood. Also, it doesn't turn colors like older Soligen steel knives.

When the chopping is done, a cook always faces the same annoying choice, slide the pile up on the face of the blade to transfer it to the bowl or pan or reach for a dough blade. Little pile, use the knife, big pile reaches for the dough blade. While this knife does not solve that problem as well as a Chinese cleaver, it does give you just enough more surface that frequently you are pleasantly aware that you just beat the odds. This blade is guaranteed for life. When the terms of that agreement run out, you will still be glad you chose this knife.

Want Wusthof Classic 10-Inch Wide Cook's Knife Discount?

I think this knife doesn't actually cut the food, so much as it intimidates it. The food looks up, sees this massive, wickedly sharp blade approaching, and leaps out of the way at the last possible moment. That's my best guess as to how this knife cuts so effortlessly.

Or I guess it could be the fact that blade takes and holds an edge like a dream, allowing the significant weight of this very large knife to just drop the blade through whatever you happen to put under it. Whatever. The bottom line is you don't have to exert any effort to cut you basically just steer, and the knife does all the work. Which is exactly as it should be.

I've had this knife for about 6 months, and use it almost daily, primarily for cutting up fruits such as pineapple, watermelon, large papayas, peaches, etc. Cutting the rind off a pineapple does require a tiny bit of effort, but otherwise, even a good size watermelon cleaves itself out of the way when it sees this beastie coming.

The wide blade is great for transferring food from the cutting board. Plus it adds that much extra weight, allowing the knife to do that much more of the work for you. I also find the width makes it easier to keep the blade against the fingers of my guiding hand, which makes me feel safer/more confident.

The length enables you to cut through small watermelons, large papayas and personal size pizzas with just one stroke. Sweet! The length also means that much more curve, meaning you can cut more and larger items without lifting the tip off the board. Also sweet!

If had one tiny complaint, it's that the length means the tip of the knife is quite far from your hand, so delicate strokes with the tip, e.g. to cut a blemish out of a piece of fruit, are a little awkward. I've gotten used to it, but it's taken some practice. However, since a 10" wide body knife isn't primarily designed for delicate tip work, I certainly won't deduct for that.

I have a Furi TechEdge Pro Knife Sharpening System. It's a great system, which I love to use. But I've only had to hone this knife's edge 2 or maybe 3 times in 6 months of almost daily use. Granted, I'm only cutting fruits and vegetables on a good quality bamboo cutting board. Still, that's pretty good edge-holding.

You really shouldn't buy a knife of this size, or in this price range, without at least holding it. How a particular knife will feel in your hand is unpredictable, particularly one this large and weighty. But I already knew I liked the Wüsthof Classic line, so I took a chance and bought this from Amazon without ever holding it. And I'm very glad I have it. I love this knife!

Shun DM0722 Classic 6-Inch Serrated Utility Knife

Shun DM0722 Classic 6-Inch Serrated Utility KnifeUpdate 9/10/07: Before purchasing this knife separately, check out the Shun Classic U2 (Ultimate Utility) Knife. You may like it better.

I believe if you're serious about cooking, you should own great cookware and excellent knives. I finally stepped up and got excellent knives. For those who haven't heard the hype, Shun is one of the most respected knife brands in the world. Check them out on the Web at kershawknives.com.

Great features of the entire line include these cool "D" shaped handles that fit your hand better. Every Shun Classic knife is made in a rightand left-handed version (chefsresource.com for lefties). The steel used for the blades is harder than what you would find in most other knives. The knives are EXTREMELY sharp. One thing to note about Asian knives is that they must be sharpened at a different angle, 16-18 degrees vs. 20 degrees for German knives. The Shun steel takes the guesswork out of getting the angle correct because of the flat edge on one side of the metal disc below the handle.

Tomato knife -I didn't eat tomatoes for a week while I was waiting on this knife to arrive. I'm glad I waited. I used to cut tomatoes with a steak knife and this is so much better!

I think this knife is the utility knife with scallops. I don't have enough knife smarts to know the difference between serrations and scallops, but I do know I love this knife. In Alton Brown's "Gear" book, he prefers scallops, but didn't say why.

This is an expensive, but lifetime investment. I encourage you to visit stores and feel the knives in your hand to make sure you are comfortable with them. For more info on Shun, check out Alton Brown's website. For ratings on various brands and types of knives, check out cooksillustrated.coms' equipment ratings.

This is probably the best kitchen purchase I've made and the one I'm most proud of.

These Shun knives are sharp, they are very sharp.

Most of my cutlery set is made up of various Wusthof knives, I simple prefer the weight and heft of Wusthof with my most commonly 'used' knives. I decided to try something new and went with a 6 inch Shun Tomato Knife and was very please with my purchase. Though somewhat light in overall weight, the "D" shape handle design (I'm right handed) and blade sharpness have proven exceptional.

Buy Shun DM0722 Classic 6-Inch Serrated Utility Knife Now

I bought this knife in January 2005, after lusting for one of the beautiful Shun knives for a long time. I was a little concerned about the D-shaped profile of the handle, because I'm left-handed, but have not had any problem with it. The edges are rounded and the difference between the flat side and the rounded one is not an intrusive sensation. That said, I'm not convinced there's any significant advantage to this shape, either.

I selected the tomato knife because it seemed like it would fill an unoccupied niche in our rather large collection of kitchen knives. This is a versatile knife that shouldn't be limited by its name not only does it handle the ripest tomatoes well, but it's handy for cutting other soft, juicy fruits and vegetables or any other use for which a serrated blade is needed, and the size of the blade makes it an excellent utility knife. My husband and I use it regularly, and we both love it.

I love this knife! It's perfect for kitchen usage and fruits and vegetables. I have a lot of Shun knives and they're all amazing. I like the size of this knife as well, the U2 is a good alternative, but it's a bit big for the vegetables. The paring knives are also awesome, but if you need a serrated veg knife I highly recommend this one.

This is by far the best knife I have ever purchased, and in the future I will be buying Japanese knives over the german steel. The sharpness has to be experienced to be believed, as it goes beyond any other knife I have used, including supposedly high quality Henckels knife (made in Germany). I believe that a significant reason is the softer steel layer in the centre which provides the cutting edge. You need to dry the blade relatively promptly after use, but really this just means don't leave it lying around wet. The design is also very attractive, it feels good to use, and I love the damascus patterns on the blade.

Cuisine de France 15-Piece Cutlery Set

Cuisine de France 15-Piece Cutlery SetOk, so I don't have this specific block. The block that I have is still cuisine de france but I think I have more knives with mine. These knives are wonderful. It's a strong, sharp blade. The steak knives are serated. The bread knife is serated, but the rest of them are not. We've used ours in the dishwasher ever since we got them (like 5 years ago or longer) and it hasn't harmed them in any way, they still look like new. No rust spots. I would recommend this set to anyone.

I bought this since my roommates and I (three other guys) needed a set of knives and this was amongst the cheapest. The serrated knives are great, all the others are SUPER DULL, as in probably never sharpened before dull. Once you get passed that though, it's a great set...we would just sharpen each knife manually before we used it.

Pros:

-just like the knife rack that grandma had in her house

-makes an apartment with 4 guys look classier (kind of?)

-Comes with everything you could need

-bunch of steak knives

-wood block is nice

Cons:

-not a single one of the non-serrated blades is sharp

-I'm still not sure how to handle a hand sharper

Overall, I'm ok with the purchase since I wasn't about to spend $200 on a set. If I were to do it again, I'd probably just buy one or two nice knives and get a set of steak knives from IKEA (although I've used a steak knife maybe once).

This 15 piece set is great. Very sharp knifes love them. I added two pics above to show that a couple of things are different than the pic Amazon has uploaded.

1. The sharpener does not have silver parts on the handles. So no more moveable parts as a previous reviewer mentioned.

2. The scissors have a little red on them.

3. The name brand added to the block is now a subtle clear embossment (not bold and black.)

Don't throw away the box that the set comes in until you either read or remove the portion on the lid that describes how to use the "Sharpening Steel." If anyone needs the instructions. I could add them here.

Pro:

* Knives so Sharp

* Not made in China like so many of the other sets.

* Love having the scissor so handy to cut open a bag of frozen vegetable, etc.

I almost didn't buy this because of the earlier poor reviews, but I know from my earlier Cuisine de France steak knife purchase how sharp this set should be. So I felt compelled to spend time to leave a review so that Amazon will continue to sell exceptional products as this one. And I don't want prospective knife set buyers to be afraid to purchase Cuisine de France Cutlery Set. I would buy this set again as a gift too.

Here's the pros:

These are fairly heavy knives, balanced, and made not to come apart, which is good for the price. The block is nice and I really do like the steak knives and the bread knife, which are all serrated (although my BF was complaining that the steak knives are dull, I've used them several times and didn't see that as an issue), but the other items in the set have issues.

Cons:

The scissors have very small finger holes in the handles which means, depending on the size of your hands, you may be able to fit 2 fingers in them without getting stuck. They are nice and sharp though and cut well, just not comfortable to use.

The sharpening steel, the handle is loose, and you can only tighten it so far as it seems stripped. But it keeps loosening back up.

The smooth edge knives are dull, like trying to cut something with a butter knife or the edge of a spoon. When I first got these, I tried using my original sharpener that always worked well on my old knives, and I also used the sharpening steel that came with these, and neither made a difference. I was trying to slice celery and I had to push down on the back of the blade to get it to cut through it. That just shouldn't happen. So, this morning, having a little more time, I spent no less than 10 minutes sharpening each non-serrated knife, using celery as my test and comparing them to my old non-serated knives (not even freshly sharpened, that have been in the dishwasher multiple times). After 10 minutes of sharpening these, these STILL can't cut through a piece of celery! And these have NEVER gone through the dishwasher! It's not tough celery, as my old knives made short work of it! I don't know why you can't sharpen these things, it's beyond me? Never seen anything like it. Since a friend of ours knows a guy who owns a store that sharpens knives (we will get a substantial discount), that's our next attempt, but I don't hold much hope. Either way, you should NOT have to take brand new knives to be professionally sharpened. There's something wrong there. But aside from that, they are solid knives for the price, as long as you don't need sharp knives, you'll be good. I'm thinking the person who owned a set of this brand of knife, whose review I based my purchase on, may have had a higher quality set, as most manufacturers do have different quality items, either that, or she's never had a sharp knife so these seem OK to her? I'm less than impressed, and at this point, I REALLY wish I could return these and try a different set from a different maker. Can't do too much worse than these, IMO...

Got them back from the professional shapener and although they are sharper, they still are not as sharp as my old ones, so please, even professional sharpening can't get these things sharp, do NOT waste your money...

And, now for the kicker, I've had these only 2 months and one of the knives is beginning to rust. None have gone through the dishwasher, although I don't know why I'm worried about it with a product of this quality.

Since we had disposed of the packaging and missed Amazon's return window, I contacted the maker. They told me they would gladly replace them, if I paid to ship them back. It's going to cost at least half the purchase price to ship them back, and then what will they send me, another set of dull knives that will not sharpen? So, if you do buy these, and aren't happy with them, return them through Amazon immediately...

I bought this set from Bed Bath and Beyond. Right off the bat the set was great, and I loved the variety of knives that came with it. My only complaints are that the knives go dull way too quickly, and take WAY too long to sharpen. I don't have time to sit for 10 minutes per knife every two weeks. Second, I lost the kitchen shears, which I loved, and cannot find another pair of this brand sold separately. My third, and final complaint, I think the Santoku knife could be just a little longer. Other than that, the set is great and does the job.

This is an awesome tool. We have had Shun Classic kitchen knives and this sharpener for about six years. This tool keeps them factory sharp for about a year and a half before they need to be sent back to Shun for a factory new re-sharpening. Some reviewers suggested this tool wears out. I disagree. It does need to be cleaned regularly as it will clog with the fine metallic particles generated while sharpening. A little dish washing soap on the back (rough)side of a kitchen sponge works great.

Works great--better than anything else--but plan on buying a new one in a few years. The surface wears out and clogs up--happens with steel sharpeners too. I am on my third of these diamond sharpeners. Worth the money if you cannot stand dull knives--but it will be a recurring expense.

Pumpkin Masters Classic Carving Pumpkin Carving Kit, 19 PiecesThese arrived fast, that was really nice. The problem is that they are good for 1 to 2 pumpkins and then the tools start to bend and are basically worthless.

this is a really wonderful kit. I often wanted a bigger saw to do the bigger portions of my pattern so that my hand would be less tired of using the tiny one. this way i can keep the tiny one for the details. and as always, the scooper kicks butt! got a great sharp edge on it that really enables you to scrape away those insides and get it nice and thin before you start your carving. this kit has got all you need! (besides the pumpkin haha) be aware though, that this listing is more for the tools than for the patterns. if you're looking at the patterns in the images and really want one that you see, ask the seller if thats the one they have first. because the manufacturer uses the same upc for all the kits with the same tools even though the patterns vary, so if you don't check with the seller you could get a kit with the same tools, but different patterns than you saw in the picture. (notice the two pictures on the page have the same tools but different patterns.) happy carving!

It's a solidly made, serious unit. Its sharp so be careful but it works like a champ. If you've been using those store bought cube steaks ... don't... buy one of these and do your own. You'll love the difference.

BTW, don't even consider the 16 blade type... worthless...

Wow is the only word I can think of the describe this Meat Tenderizer. I purchased the 48 Blade and love it! No more poking my steaks with a standard eating fork to make the holes for marinating. Used on a london broil and it melted in your mouth is was so tender. This a must for the everyday cook! I recommend...

I use the tenderizer every time I grill meat. It really works like a charm. And you get a li'l work out in too. The only drawback is cleaning. I seem to remember reading that it is easy as tossing into dishwasher. Well, you will find small pieces of meat stuck between the blades. Be careful with this since it is raw meat. It is easily disassenbled to be further cleaned. Or just use an old toothbrush to dislodge meat. Oh yeah. Blades are REALLY sharp. Be careful.

Over the years, I've tried several ways to tenderize tough meat. Everything from pounding it to stabbing it w/ a knife. Needless to say, my methods were quite ineffective. This method is quite different. This model has 48 extremely sharp blades that pierce the meat and leaves very little visual damage. I've use this on some of the cheapest toughest cuts of beef and they always come out tender.

I strongly recommend this product.

Tough cuts come out tender after a bunch of jabs, while fine cuts get shorter cook and marinade times and better marinade penetration from just a couple stabs. Be careful with cook times though, it really does cut them drastically. Very easy to overcook until you are used to it.

Forschner Knives 40606 Curved Paring Knife with Black Fibrox Handle

Forschner Knives 40606 Curved Paring Knife with Black Fibrox HandleIf you have never used the curved paring knife, try this one. The curved edge is great for doing all those peeling jobs. The knife seems to hold its edge well. The handle, however, although comfortable and somewhat non-slip, is fairly cheap plastic.

I love this knife. Very sharp and the curve is perfect for coring tomatoes etc. A friend was visiting and used it and wants one also. I am well into senior "citizenship" so am not new to cooking and I love to cook. I put this knife in my knife block so it will always be close at hand.

I was looking for a knife to replace one we had from Germany. This one is practically identical to the one we had except the new one has a beautiful straight point... we'd bent the other one.

I won't use any other knife for cutting apples and other small produce. The small, curved blade allows for far more flexibility and control over the cutting than any other I've found.

Update 4/30/2012

Ordering a replacement today because the blade on this just broke. Hardly a day goes by on which we do not use this knife it's the best for anything that doesn't require a cutting board.

Never had a beak-shaped peeler, this one looked affordable and well-reviewed. Well, not much good to say about it, really. Not very sharp, and with this kind of blade, it is very obvious it was stamped.. even the tip does not exactly stay in one plane. Also, the handle feels cheap and awkward, although that was not too surprising.. but I did expect it would cut better.

this little, sharp knife is a wonderful addition to any kitchen. it has so many uses and does them better than a straight paring knife. its size makes it easy to manuever(be careful, it is sharp!).ifind myself reaching for this before the regular paring knife. the price is cheap enough that everyone should have one to use.

Fischer Bargoin 12-Inch Oval Sharpening Steel Classic, Fine CutA good piece of top steel, really does the job. Great length makes the work easy. four more words required

I just received this and its a heavy duty quality item and works great.. My old steels were worn down and I wanted a 12" anyway since I've acquired longer knives and this is perfect.. I didn't realize how much my old ones were worn until I made a few passes with this and I tell you "Wow what a difference".. I still can't get over how inexpensive it was and how well its built so I highly recommend it..
