WMF Manaos 5-Piece Stainless Steel Flatware Place Setting, Service for 1
When I received this flatware, I was a little put off by the "made in Korea" stamp after WMF CROMAGNON, a famous trademark from this German company. But after using it for nearly a year now, I am impressed with the durability of the very highly polished surface and the strength of these slender and graceful implements. This is a classic pattern, but the way it looks on the table is better than in photos because of the way they sit on a flat surface; very graceful. The pieces are a little lighter than my old Oneida, but the Oneida will bend if put to the test and these do not. Constant washing in the dishwasher hasn't dulled the gleaming finish and there are only one or two scratches (when steak knives were thrust blade down into the flatware holder in the dishwasher).
While they are made in Korea, they seem to follow WMF's tradition of quality and great design.I bought this set to test and see if I was willing to invest in a whole set.
My worry was that they seemed small and light. Once I receive them and tried them for a few days I was very pleased at how they fit in my hands and how well balanced they were. I have since bought an entire set of 8.

Alton's Angles by Shun Angled 5 1/2 Inch Santoku Knife
The knife I received is not the knife shown on Amazon. It is a very nice Shun knife, but it is not an Alton's Angles
knife. The knife shown on Amazon had Alton Brown's logo on it, this one does not. I bought this gift as a birthday present for my husband who is a huge fan of Alton Brown's. I was told by customer service the Alton's Angles knife is not available anymore. If so, Amazon should not show his image on it.First off...take the stock picture of this knife off the web

Shun presents the Alton Brown Angle santoku knife. It is very well crafted and rivals my Henkels in heft and feel. The blade is beautifully crafted steel, and has ridge lines embossed that give it the look of folded damscus steel. This is an extremely sharp blade. The angle of the handle keeps your knuckles from hitting the cutting board. I look forward to a lifetime of use from this quality piece.Want Alton's Angles by Shun Angled 5 1/2 Inch Santoku Knife Discount?
Great utility knife for everything from dicing onions and julienning vegetables to trimming meat.Use it much more than my 7-inch Shun Santoku.
Keeps a sharp edge, but needs a sharpener designed for the different edge angle of Japanese knives.
Kyocera Wide Julienne Slicers
I bought this looking for something easier to store, set up, and put away than my Bron mandoline, but wound up somewhat disappointed. This is hard to store, and there's some problems with how the blades are configured. This slicer measures 3-5/8" x 8", plus another 3-1/2" for the handle, so roughly 3-1/2" x 12" overall. That's smaller than the 6" x 16" Bron, but still pretty big, and takes a lot of room in the drawer. The bigger issue with storage is that there no way to protect the blade. The cutting guard doesn't attch in any way, and it comes packaged on a card, so there no box to keep it in. As a result, you have to hang it up or find a spot where the blades won't be damaged.
The blade configuration is the second big problem. Unlike the Bron, the vertical blades sit exposed about 1/2" in front of the horizontal blade. 40 razor sharp vertical nibs of somewhat brittle ceramic are not what I'd call a good idea. Hard to store safely--do you want ribbons sliced into your hand while fishing around in a drawer?--and hard to protect from damage.
Usage-wise, this is effective. As typical for Kyocera, the blades on this are extremely sharp. I have some Kyocera knives over 12 years old that are still razor-sharp, despite never haveing been sharped. The one caveat is that you can chip the blades if you aren't careful.
Like most mandolines, the blade guard serves more to guard against lawsuits than actually providing a way to protect your hand. Leave a stub on the vegetables you're cutting, and use a dishtowel or a cut-resistant glove to protect your hand. Because the vertical blades are exposed and not tucked under the main blade, you'll need to be very careful as you get toward the end.
Cut-wise, this works pretty well. You get a standard julienne cut. I don't know why it's call a wide julienne. The only quibble is that unless you use a lot of downward pressure, you tend to get ribbons instead of square julienne. Downward pressure is dangerous because of those exposed vertical blades. On a standard mandoline, you can adjust to compensate for that, but here you are stuck with the designed blade spacing.
In the end this loses a star for the exposed blades, and a second star for the lack of a guard for storage. I have been using this product for a few years now. It is a very simple kitchen tool that does the job well enough in many situations. It julianne slices ginger, cucumber, carrot, and a lot of other things, especially for those that are used in bulk quantity or only for flavor. For example, when I make ginger-infused dry vermouth, I can use less ginger and still extract ginger flavor fully and quickly by julienne slicing ginger. If I'm slicing ginger by hand, I'd not bother julienne slicing and use more sliced ginger and infuse a bit longer. But this thing is handy in a situation like this. (Julienne sliced ginger is easy to remove by straining.)
For salad and garnish, I would still slice them by hand. The cut surfaces do not look as pretty compared to the results I can get easily using a very sharp vegetable knife (which is generally true for a lot of cutting tools of this type). The advantage of this tool is speed and simplicity. Again, I would not use this thing to make garnish, unless I'm cooking for a large party. But then a better option is a professional quality mandoline with a proper blade.
Among a few other good options for julienne slicing, I still rate it 4 stars because it is simple, easy to use, quick to wash and store away. Professional grade mandoline would require more work to set up and clean up. Hand cutting would require clean cutting board space. This tool requires not much more than two hands to work with.
Buy Kyocera Wide Julienne Slicers Now
With this you get professional thin (amazon description says 1/8" but the one that arrived was 1/10" or 0.1" compared to 0.09" for the regular julienne slicer, I don't think that makes it much different to advertise this product as giving you a "wide" julienne... the size difference is so minute that you probably won't be able to tell) julienne cuts easily and fast! It is amazing. The finger protector is not perfect but works fine when the vegetable gets to about 2 inches high or less. Obviously, it will leave about a 1/3 inch stump you'll have to either cut yourself or use it for another time. I say this because the julienne pieces are so beautifully uniform that you'd probably want to not mix anything else :)
What's great about this product is that the blade is made from ceramic with some kind of high tech diamond sharpened technology and it sure is sharp! And they don't rust or corrode and they advertise that it stays sharp 10 times longer than steel blades.
Highly recommend! My only regret is that I did not get the slicer together, I'm going to get the double-sided slicer, for vegetables like onions and peppers which can't be julienned.
I think I could make great hashbrown with this stuff in no time!!!

I bought this and it does exactly what I wanted and expected. There is a typo on the package and in the product description: the strips produced are not 1" wide, they are 0.1"=2.5mm wide. The typo is clear enough from the product picture where the little verticle teeth are spaced at 1/10th of an inch, but I thought it might be worth commenting.
Love these slicers! I have used this slicer several times a week for almost 6 months. It is still as sharp as the day I got it. I use it mainly to slice carrots and cucumbers. Slicing is fast and easy. I can slice an entire cucumber in less than a minute. I generally just rinse the slicer well and let it air dry. I put it in the dishwasher periodically or after slicing carrots (to get rid of the orange carrot color). The slicer comes with a small plastic thingy with little plastic spikes to use as a holder when the vegetable or fruit gets small (to avoid thinly slicing your fingers -I have no doubt that this would slice fingers quite easily, although I have thus far avoided testing that theory!). The little plastic guard works, but it takes me some doing to keep a carrot or other really hard vegetable from slipping off, as the little plastic spikes work better on softer foods. The slicer is very thin, so storage is easy, even in my cramped kitchen. I lean it against the inside wall of a cabinet, slicing side toward the wall. I wouldn't want to stick it in a drawer, as I would be afraid of slicing my fingertips off while looking for it. The only real drawback I see is that the thickness of slices is not adjustable. You only get paperthin. I will have to see if they make one of these for thicker slices, as sometimes I want a thicker slice.
Mercer Cutlery Genesis 10" Forged Chef's Knife, Steel/Black
Very sharp, Curve is very well done, good length. holds it's edge well. No wood handle so it can go in the dishwasher.I purchased this knife about 6 years ago along with an 8 inch chef knife, they're good at keeping an edge for a while even with a sharpening steel; looks great and has very good balance.I presented my boss with the ten inch knife after he used it during one of our xmas parties, since then I had only sharpened that knife 4 times in a lapse of 4 years and he loves it.
I too swear by it and I'm planning on purchasing some more in the future.

For a Le Creuset-branded item, the price for this bowl was good. It's one of Le Creuset's non-French-made offerings (seems to be an increasing number of those), but I've found that Le Creuset appears to be holding their foreign manufacturers to good quality standards. I've used this bowl for a few purposes since receiving it. It's heavy, of course, and solid. No flaws that I can see. The ribs on the outside are handy for gripping /carrying. Not much else to say, really. I like it a lot.EuroQuest Imports 4-Inch Opinel Picnic Knife

Unfortunately I bought it to hold non-Wusthof knives and only my paring knife and kitchen shears fit. I'm sure it's great for the proper line of knives. But it's still a great quality block and doesn't take up much space. Now I don't have to leave my knives in a drawer or on the counter. To those who claim it is "smaller than it looks," you clearly did not read the description before ordering: "6 x 3 x 6-inches tall." Yes, it is made for smaller knives. My chef's knife is too large for it but my smaller knives fit nicely.I was hoping the block would hold my new Vitorinox Fibrox Chef knife but it was too short and the slot not wide enough. I was able to rearrange the knives in another block and fill this with some smaller knives that I own.LamsonSharp 3" x 6" Chef?s Slotted Turner, red
Really nice turner...my wife used it all the time as she likes the feel & the thin frontal edge. We already had one so this one is her second as she was always hand-washing it between dishwasher cleanings so I got her another one.The turner works as advertised. The blade is flexible and thin enough to go under delicate fish without breaking it up. The only thing I don't like is that the handle isn't heat resistant. I have a tendency to lean my turners on the pan which in this case left an indentation where it melted.Victorinox Cutlery 4-1/4Inch Fork-tipped Tomato Knife, Black Polypropylene Handle
serrated edge and thinness of knife sliced through tomato. forked tip was a bit cumbersome cutting out the top. like this product.I enjoy having a slice or two of tomato on a sandwich and was tired of the mess that paring and steak knives made when trying to slice. When looking for a tomato knife I was impressed with the reviews of the Victorinox and since it only cost a few dollars figured it was worth taking a chance on it. Glad I did. It's extremely sharp and doesn't tear the skin of the tomato when slicing. Colour Grip 16-inch Cutting Board, Purple
Nice, big size with rubber grips on either end to keep it from traveling around the counter. Also, this very pretty cutting board is a great match to my kitchen-aid grape mixer!I've had it for 2 years now, and no complaints. I use it every time I cook. A good investment.
UPDATE 6/2013: Still going strong! My favorite way to use it is propped right across the sink. I even had a larger cutting board for a while there and got rid of it when we moved. This is all I need.I like the size of the product. It is big, long, and it has enough space to spread out while cutting veggies or meat. I bought the purple for cutting meat and the blue for cutting veggies. I love both of them. I love the non-slip grip at the end of the cutting boards. It keeps the cutting board from slipping or moving around. It is a satisfying feeling, after using the product for over a month, to know that my money was well-spent. Nice! Good job Oneida!

Global G-663738 - MasterChef 3 Piece Knife Set
Although I didn't buy this set of Global Knives at Amazon, I really want to write a review about how awesome they are! These knives are good, beyond good, possibly some of the worlds best knives available. Are they costly? Yes. Are they worth it? Every penny! I had wanted a Global knife for years, so when this set was available for a discounted price, I jumped at the chance to finally own a Global product. I had read many reviews of their knives and knew this was the brand I wanted to invest in. And yes, it is an investment, but a wise one! If you love to cook you know the need for quality knives. These are perfect in all respects. Perfect balance, perfect blade, perfect sharpness, and they look like a piece of kitchen art. The Japanese have been producing some of the best blades for centuries. Global knives are produced out of the best steel available. From their website:"GLOBAL knives are made from the finest stainless steel material. The blades utilize CROMOVA 18 stainless steel, Ice tempered and hardened to Rockwell C56°-58°which holds a razor sharp edge longer than any other steel and resists rust, stains and corrosion."
I have used these knives for about a month now and haven't cut myself yet :) That is the only negative thing I have to say, and it's not even negative! These knives are sharp! And I mean SHARP! So sharp that I have heard even if you barely knick yourself, you will bleed. So be careful. These knives are definitely not for a novice cook or a young person. And you need to use a blade guard for storage unless you have a knife block. That will protect your fingers and the knife blades. Hand wash also. That is the safest and will protect the blade. Global knives are unique in their design and I was concerned about the handle being metal, and therefore slippery. No problem. They fit in your hand so well that you have total control. And no seams to hold bacteria. If you can only own one knife...make it a Global. You won't be disappointed.I love my new knives! They make prep work so much easier. I am so glad I spent the money on a good set.

This is my second set of these I love them so much I had to buy a set for my second home so I'm never away from them.Brabantia Soft Cheese Slicer
Although a longtime fan of Brabantia kitchen products, I am disappointed in this one. If you like thin slicing of softer cheeses, check for a brand that still makes really shallow blades. What is good about it: Soft cheese is best sliced with a foreshortened blade that shouldn't stick or "gum" up. This one is easier to use than a full depth regular cheese slicer and does fine on medium and harder cheeses.
What disappoints me: It is not good enough to deliver thin slices of really soft cheese. The blade depth was increased to a full ½ inch (12mm) which is too deep so it sticks.
What to look for: I have an older version of this manufacturer's slicer that works fine with medium and soft cheeses. Its blade depth is about ¼ inch (5mm) set at a 5 degree angle, so it doesn't stick to soft cheese at all. I have to be careful, because harder cheese can bend the blade; perhaps that is why the new design. There are shallower, more effective soft cheese slicers available without resorting to wire slicers. WM

Nice set it was on sale. Had to sharpen them though, they weren't very sharp out of the box. Mac Knife Superior Santoku/Paring Knife, 4-Inch
I got this knife for my girlfriend, who is only 5'2", with small hands. I do most of the cooking and have several high quality knives including a Japanese carbon santoku and keep all of them very sharp. On occassion, my sweetie does some cooking and to my surprise was using my paring knife for prep. Apparently, she finds my regular-sized santokus as too big for her and even somewhat intimidating. Well this is a problem that I can certainly remedy. So, I did some research and found this knife, and lots of reviews by women that seem to really love it, so I pulled the trigger and got one.It finally arrived, after a minor mix-up. The vendor initially sent the wrong model but immediately made it right, along with an email return shipping label and no excuses at all awesome. Way to go, vendor!
So today, I finally got to put it through its paces. MAC has a good reputation so I was prepared for the blade to be sharp "out of the box" and it was. It readily sliced thin paper and make quick work of an onion, with both push cuts and quick chops.
But ... it wasn't "razor sharp". So I then honed it up with my DMT Aligner, starting with my x-fine 1200 grit and finishing on the xx-fine 8000 grit. I gave it a quick double-bevel. Since it was brand new, it took this new edge very quickly. Wow now this knife is super sharp and positively shreds paper with very little lateral movement. That's a proper edge.
I then handed it to my petite sweetie for her take on it and she took care of another onion. And gave me a big smile. Finally, she has a proper sharp knife for her petite hands. Verdict: guys get one for your ladies. It's the gift that keeps on giving. Just give it a quick sharpening every now and then.Has polished laminated wood handle and is single bevel 15 degree right hand sharpened on a semi-thin blade. Came nicely packaged in a cardboard sheath inside a nice box. Took about a dozen strokes on an ultra fine ceramic stone to polish edge to semi razor sharpness. Due to wideness of blade, storage in a poly knife-safe case, requires a 4-6" size case/sheath. Handle offset could be a tad greater to provide better knuckle clearance.

Schmidt Brothers Cutlery, SBODB07, Bonded Teak 7 Piece Starter Knife Set
I got these as a Christmas Giftand have to say I love the knives. They are beautiful and functional, and I like the balance and weight better than I ever liked my Henckles or Wusthof knives. Where these break down for me is the block. I loved the idea of the narrow, long line of block, but the one that comes with the set is beautiful but not functional. The magnets in the block aren't strong enough to hold the knives up and down, so they slide against the acrylic piece. The Acrylic piece isn't stiff or strong enough not to bow out, so they slide, tip, tilt, and ultimately end up suspended by the edges of their handlesnot ideal.I still think the set is a good valuecheaper than buying all of the knives individually, but know that you'll want to get something else as a block, as this one is useless.I am a professional chef with dozens of excellent knives in my personal collection. As a chef, I have a slight disdain for knife sets and usually hand choose knifes individually. The only set I had previously was the set I got from school. Well, that doesn't work too well when your GF likes a pretty looking counter.
I've had experience with Schmidt Brothers knives before in professional kitchens and knew that the steel they use is excellent, the same steel used in the premier lines of Wusthof and Henkels. They take a good edge and have good edge retention. I knew they had good balance, good ergonomics and they take a beating. So I chose this set as the one for my home kitchen counter. It's beautiful and gets many comments from friends that visit, but they are good enough that I don't mind using them too. I still have and use other knives at home, but their kept in their sleeves in a drawer because the GF wants a beautiful set on the counter rather than my chaotic collection.
