I needed a good knife to cut my meat and slice up meat. This knife is great. It stays sharp and I rarely have to sharpen it. I like the angle on the top of the knife because when you are cutting fat or silver skin, it gets right underneath it. It is a very large knife though. It can also double as a small fighting sword! I was only missing this type of knife among my repetoir and now I am complete. I am having a huge love-hate relationship with this tableware. The quality, weight, balance, finish and styling is phenomenal....gorgeous....perfect!Sadly, it just isn't practical. It has to be hand-washed and immediately hand-dried. Otherwise, it spots to a degree of spotting that I've never seen before! Rewashing, even with a lot of scrubbing, doesn't get rid of the spots. The only way to make them spot-free is to use stainless cleanser.When I was a kid we had two sets of silverware: One for everyday use and a different one for special occasions. I hated the holiday set. It was heavy and edgy; the forks had bulky, square prongs that split a potato rather than piercing it. The spoons were so big that we kids always had soup dripping down our faces. You've seen stuff like that. Of course, a kid doesn't know that life could be different. I was resigned to the bulky silverware just like the taste of fish oil, kisses from an aunt I did not like or a dentist's mechanical drill that vibrated my whole skull.
Things are better now. Dentistry came a long way and the aunt doesn't come around anymore. I still take fish oil but only so that I can annoy the kids and make them take it, too. Otherwise they'd never want to grow up. We take our turns, make faces, swallow and say "blaw". I always point out smugly that I actually don't have to take fish oil anymore because I am a grownup. That way our kids will want to get their own kids to have someone to annoy and boss around. Because of such seemingly trivial events the Western civilization may not end abruptly and those of you who don't have kids because you spend all your time reading Amazon consumer reviews will at least have someone else's kids to wheel you around the old folks' home. But I digress.
This silverware would have done it for us kids back then. It has a clean modern design but with a traditional handle shape---just like our comfortable old everyday set---while being nice enough to impress the in-laws over holidays. I tried some of the other Henckels thin-handled sets including those with "standing knives" but I did not like them. It's form over function. If you want your knife to stand on its edge you can always stick it in your food. My mother-in-law gives me "the look" when I do it but I don't want to talk about that right now. These handles have enough shape and mass to hold steady and keep from spinning in your hand but not so much bulk to look like it's an arthritis-friendly design. The knife handles are hollow---there is a straight seam where the blade is attached with a smooth transition so you won't be looking at unidentifiable food sediments in the crease like with our previous knives. The hollow handles give the knives good balance. The forks were designed for forking---I successfully tried them on a boiled potato. The spoons are unusual---a sleek drop-like shape that at first seemed smaller in volume compared to other spoons. They are not---the spoons have enough depth to make up for the missing surface so I won't lag behind during supper on account of a small spoon and I won't get "the look". Of course, unless people brought their own spoons to dinner it would not matter anyway because everyone at the table would have pretty much the same equipment just like in NASCAR. That's also why we decided to buy two sets so we have enough standardized gear for everyone.
The forks and spoons have stamps on the underside that say: J.A. Henckels International 18/10 China. They are letting us know that there is 18% chromium and 10% nickel in the stainless steel and also that we can't pay the Germans to manufacture such things anymore. Not in affluent Solingen, for sure, and impoverished East Germans won't do it for less anymore because it would not be fair and also because they'd lose their welfare checks. Fortunately today's Germans are very sensible people and when they hire the Chinese to make German products they at least make the stamping so small that most people won't see it without glasses and your unionized dinner guests won't berate you over your Chinese silverware. Also, the knives which could give the game away do not have any such compromising stamp and should a guest start scrutinizing the underside of your spoons or forks you can always enliven your dinner conversation by remarking in a nasal tone, "Is there something the matter? Did the kitchen help not polish your fork, Steve?"
I ran the whole set through a dishwasher right after unpacking to see what happens. It came out with the same mineral stains like it does with everything else, including our old silverware. That was reassuring because we are on hard well water and dishes are supposed to look scuzzy after a dishwasher cycle. I put it back in some water, wiped it with a scotch-brite and it came right off. We rarely did it with our old silverware but I'll make the kids polish this new set regularly and I'll always call it "flatware" when I do. That'll give them two more reasons to want to grow up.
This silverware deserves 5 stars even though I was tempted to subtract one for using stuck-up words like "flatware" and for misspelling a common word like "bellissimo".

Interestingly the deal was for the same 8 inch chef and 6 inch serrated utility, but what arrived was the chef and a 6 inch regular utility. I'm sorry, unless the price for both these knives is the same as the individual chef's knife (as a commenter pointed out), why would you pay for a serrated blade made out of high carbon steel? Serrated blades are nearly impossible to sharpen thus unless you are willing to spend hours with a set of diamond edged rat tailed files (which would cost more than these knives), most people in the know buy cheap serrated edges and throw them away when they are dull. This was my first proper cook's knife, and it has made knife work much less of a chore. No more crying when I cut onions. I've used it a few times a week for about four months now, with no maintenance besides a bit of honing every few days, and the edge is still good. From what I could find, these US-made SofGrip and Sani-Safe knives have better edges than the Dexter Basics line. At the time of purchase, this knife cost 50% less than the comparable Victorinox Fibrox, which is probably the most similar thing on the market. The butter dish arrived today, and I was so surprised to see the quality of it. It does not appear to have any "bubbles" and the cuts in the crystal just glimmered in the sun. This is a very heavy butter dish and should not skid around on the tablecloth when in use. It's also large(long)enough to hold about a cube and a half of our standard butter cubes, so, for large groups, it will not have to be replenished too readily. I've tried a lot of corkscrews over the years. All kinds, from the Ah-So, to the Screwpull, to the Rabbit etc. etc.I was drawn to the 'automatic' extractors like the Screwpull and their Chinese knock-offs because they seemed quick and easy to use. And for a while they are, but with the new kinds of corks their teflon coating deteriorates and very soon they break.
Plus after the novelty wears off, you look like a nerd opening a bottle of wine.
I did have a number of 'manual' corkscrews that LOOK like the PullParrot, with a 2-stage kind of opening design. But in fact the 'first stage' doesn't really work right, and they essentially only have 'one stage'.
If you look closely at the design you will see the little gizmo halfway down from the 'beak' that is the first stage of the cork extraction. It's got a little spring that moves the gizmo in and out. This is what distinguishes the design from the look-a-likes, which have a single molded in 2-stage stop, that don't really work.
To use the corkscrew, start with a few turns into the cork. Then push out the little spring mounted gizmo, and pull the cork out a little bit. Then let the gizmo retract, re-seat the corkscrew with its main ledge on the top of the bottle and continue the extraction.
The next time you are in a restaurant, look closely and you will see that EVERY waiter in every restaurant uses a corkscrew with this design.
Once you start using this, you will NEVER go back to the big fancy corkscrews.
(I know this review may be confusing, but it's the best I can do.)

J.A. Henckels International Classic Forged 7-Piece Stainless-Steel Knife Set with Block
Okay, so they are made in Spain rather than Germany...so what? These knives are a great starter set for anyone looking to "upgrade" from the dull knives they got as a hand-me-down or when they went off to college.Chefs say that a safe knife is a sharp knife, and you just can't get that with inferior knives. This line by Henckels probably gets overlooked because you don't find it on the shelves of Williams-Sonoma, but they are just as good. Cutting is also faster with a well-balanced knife with some weight behind it, which this set has as well. I've added kitchen shears since I bought mine, and I'll probably add the utility knife, carving set and cleaver before I'm done. The knives you start with though are all you need. I find myself using just about all of them (except the boning knife) almost every day.
Two caveats though...don't put them in the dishwasher and don't forget to use the steel either before or after you use your knives. My sister put her knives (not Henckels, but of similiar quality) in the dishwasher on a consistant basis and the edges got nicked from all the banging around that goes on. Also, using the steel will keep you from having to have the knives professionally sharpened.I have owned an overgrown set of these knives for about 4 (UPDATE: NOW 7 YEARS AND STILL LOVE THESE BLADES) years now and waited until I had significant use and comparison to write this review. I also own similar knives in Wusthof Classic and will compare directly. This review has been copied from other Henckels International Classic Reviews I wrote and has been modified slightly for the particular item being reviewed although I left comments about the other knives in.
Disclaimer: I enjoy sharpening knives so edge retention is rarely an issue for me as I probably sharpen even my best knives too much. Besides stone sharpening every 6 months or so, I also steel my knives just about every time I use them.
The bottome line: I really love this set of knives (although I got one dud in the bunch; the only reason I am not giving this line a 5 rating). The edges are almost if not just as good as the more expensive knives but the finish is lacking (although only somewhat). Relatively great value. I did not feel like these knives were very sharp out of the box but they take a scary edge quite easily and keep it for a long time (many, many months with regular steeling and home use).
8 Inch Chef: This is a very nice knife if you can get over the fact that the finish is not as nice as the higher end stuff. By this I mean that the edges on the handle and bolster are sharper than they are on my Wusthof Classic. It takes and holds an edge well. I also own a Wusthof 8 inch chefs knife and feel like this one takes just as sharp of an edge. I have yet to determine a difference in edge retention between the two lines, so that means they are at least comparible. As much as I thought I would be enamored with the wusthof, I really don't believe that the additional cost is worth the small amount of performance gain you might get by buying the Wusthof. In truth, I still enjoy using the Henckels International Chef's knife just as much as the Wusthof. The heft is wonderful and the curvature of the blade is ideal for chopping. I really like how the point is taperd to a very thin blade. Finish aside, this is right up there with the best of them and allows the user to slice with the point quite effectively.
6 Inch Chef: My wife swears by this knife and it is consistantly one of the sharpest we own. For some reason (perhaps the thinner blade), it holds its edge like the sharp little devil it is. This knife is a true pleasure to own and use. It is very effective and feels wonderful in my hand. I may be becoming a knife snob, but I see no reason to buy any other 6 inch chef's knife, as all you would be getting is a fancier name and smoother edges along the handle and bolster. We reach for this one multiple times each day and it retains its edge far better than expected for the price.
4 inch parer: I don't like this one as much as my Wusthof parers but my wife likes it much better. It is always the one she reaches for (many times per day). I personaly prefer the thinness and flexibility of the wusthof parer blades. This one is quite rigid and although it is very sharp, it does not seem to be as sharp as the thinner wusthof parers, nor does it hold its edge as long. On the other hand, its size is perfect for a parer, coming in at the sweet spot between the 3.5 inch wusthof and 4.5 inch wusthof parers I compare it to. I would love to own a 4 inch wusthof parer. Aditionally, the diminished depth of the blade is probably preferable to the deeper wusthof parer blades for tasks such as peeling toward you. I bought one of these for my mother and it is a good test for edge retention as she rarely sharpens and never steels. .
6 inch utility: I do not use this knife much. It seems to be quite redundant with my 4.5 inch Wusthof parer (which also does not see much use) or my favorite boning knife (a beat up and resurected chicago cutlery 5 inch utility that is scary sharp and a joy to use). In truth, almost every task in my kitchen is done quite well with either a parer or a chef's knife. I really don't see much use for a 6 inch utility. That said, this knife is sharp and pleasureable to use. Still, on this one, I would prefer a thinner and perhaps more flexible blade. It is quite rigid and that makes me not want to use it as much. For sandwiches, cheese, tomatoes, etc. it is quite appropriate, but I would still probably prefer my 6 inch or even 8 inch chefs knives for such tasks as they are thinner at the edge and therefore seem much sharper.
Bread knife: Aside from the fact that this would benefit from a longer blade, this is as effective as any other we have tried. You don't have to have a bread knife this nice, but this one certainly does the job well.
Boning knife: I have honestly never used this knife on more than a trial basis. It just does not stack up to my older chicago cutlery boning/utility knife. You can't really compare the two, however, since one is very flexible and thin(CC) and the other is very rigid and thick(HIC). I strongly prefer a thin, flexible boning knife. The finish on this knife was horrible in my particular set. It was rounded (not supposed to be) on the end and the blade had not been sharpened at the point, leaving a rounded and blunt tip (exactly the opposite of what you want in a good boning knife). I have never been able to get the point to where I want it. I am certain that I just have a lemon and will try to return it if possible.
So overall, I love these knives. Between myself and my wife, they get just as much use as my Wusthof Classics. Unless finish is critical to you or you like to have other people know that you spent a lot of money, do your pocketbook a favor. I think these knives are just as good for much less money.

Looks like there are three kinds of Henckels knives on the market: the ultra expensive kind (which don't have the word "International" tacked onto the end), the expensive kind (which do have the word "International" tacked onto the end and which are made in Spain), and the less expensive kind (which also say "International," made in China or elsewhere). I have the Spanish set and a couple of the Chinese knives, and I just don't think the Chinese ones are worth the price. The Spanish knives, on the other hand, are so amazing that I assume the only reason anybody might want the ultra high-end ones probably has something to do with snobbery. My spouse and I comment almost every time we use the Spanish Henckels knives, "Wow! Why didn't we buy these years ago? Who knew what we were missing?" These knives are absolutely superb and ultra sharp. And speaking of sharp, I've never had to sharpen the Spanish Henckels knives, even a year later, but I did make the mistake of buying a Henckels sharpener, the kind with ceramic disks inside that you're supposed to draw the blade through several times, and tested it out on another stainless knife I've had for years. It took off way too much metal. The sword-like sharpener that comes with this Henckels set is far more effective and gentle, if you ever need it.I bought this block set to replace my Chicago Cutlery chef's knife and paring knife, which I've owned for years. The Henckels are excellently balanced and construction is solid. Out of the box, they are not the sharpest knives ever. However, they're likely to be sharper than the knives they're replacing, and if you get them sharpened, they'll hold an edge with good maintenance. I've used every blade in the set and have been satisfied with them all. I have some slight discoloration of the blades, but nothing too terrible. I've been hand-washing them religiously, but a friend has the same set and tosses them in the dishwasher, and his knives have held up better than mine.Con:
1. Not the sharpest knives ever.
2. Require significant maintenance.
3. Shears should be included in this set.
Pro:
1. Excellent balance, highly functional.
2. All the basic blades are included.
3. They hold an edge well.
4. Block is utterly functional.

Overall, this block set was a fantastic investment. I'd recommend it to anyone getting into cooking. If you're a professional, you'll probably want something better (there are better Henckels, and Wustof too). If you don't cook much at all, this set is probably overkill.I love these knives. They are heavier than the Wusthof Grand Prix line that I looked at, and for not being made in Germany, they are remarkably well-made.
They are fully forged and razor sharp.
I compared these side by side to several sets of Henckels and Wusthof knives, particularily the Henckels Pro S made in Solingen, and I could not tell a major difference.
They might not be top notch, but they are certainly nice enough for anything I'll ever need them for.

This is lovely flatware. The oversized handles are not heavy and feel comfortable in your hands. But the same oversized handles make it impossible to store them in the flatware organizer in my kitchen drawer. I'm going to have to locate a basket or tray to hold the flatware between servings.I purchased this set on Sept 2006 and while it "was" a beautiful set, it is beautiful no longer. Over the past two years, the pattern has completely worn off half the pieces. The silver rings at the top of the handles have broken on several pieces with a few having been lost, leaving me with an ugly incomplete piece. Two pieces have handles that have cracked.These have never been in a dishwasher and while used regularly, have never been abused.
I am extremely disappointed with this set and after reading reviews on similar styles of flatware from Pfalzgraff, it appears they have serious production problems with these sets.
I do NOT recommend you buy this or similarly made flatware items from Pfalzgraff.

I had purchased 100 spoons, also 100 each of the knives and forks. At first I was pleasantly surprised at the quality and the look of them, they looked like real silver! I am using these for my backyard wedding and was super excited to see these as an option. Once I began rolling these up into bundles with napkins individually, I was able to see each one. The forks and knives are all great! The spoons however, have many black splotches on them where there is no silver, not that it had flaked off, but it was smooth, like it came from the manufacturer that way. Also, I had noticed that several packages in the shipping box were opened. I thought maybe they came undone during shipping. When I was finished, I was missing one spoon! I had ordered exactly 100 and only got 99 spoons! I looked in the box, nowhere to be found. I am disappointed with the care the shipper gave these. These are just perfect for our Big Day,arrived quick,packed well and I am very happy.I also brought the matching champaign flutes wich together look amazing.1. They are not "Silver" (except in color) as stated in the description or title, they are "Silver Plated" (which is what you would expect for these sets especially at this price.2. The ones they shipped me were not secure in the packaging and when arrived were not in their separate placeholders so rubbing against each other.

It seems this style of knife has become quite popular since Cooks Illustrated/America's Test Kitchen gave it a glowing review.The gist of their review is that they're pretty rigid, hold a good edge, comfortable, doesn't slip when wet, low-maintenance, and most of all, cheap!
With increasing demand, comes increasing price. The Fibrox costs more than some of my nice forged carbon-steel designer knives!
This MIU 10" chef's knife is a near clone of the Fibrox. It has the same antimicrobial polymer handle. Yes it feels cheap compared to wood, but so does the Fibrox which costs more than twice this price. More importantly, its ergonomic and won't slip from your hand even when wet. Notice the ergonomic shape and how the base of the grip hooks inwards. Plastic aside, this is a very comfortable and practical handle.
The blade is stamped high carbon stainless steel. It holds an edge very well. I use this knife every day. So much so, it stays out on the counter 24/7. (no children or pets in the house) Even after 5 months of extensive use, it only needs an occasional hit with the honing steel to get right back to razor-sharp.
Stamped is generally considered inferior to forged because it flexes more, but stamped is just fine for the home kitchen. In fact, a little flex in the blade is great when you're filleting meat/fish.
Bottom Line: This is every bit as good as a Fibrox. 4 stars because it's not the very best I've ever used, but it works well. I use it more than my so-called "nicer" knives. And they're cheap to boot.Part of my job requires me to do real heavy chopping jobs. I was using a forged 10 inch and found my hand hurting after each use due to the heaviness of the knife. A co worker let me try out his 10 inch stamped victorinox fibrox to see if it helped and it did. I had to get a new knife at that point. I was on a bit of a budget, so I didnt want to cough up $30 for the fibrox. I came across this MIU and decided to go for it due to the price. Best decision I've made. I even like the handle of the MIU better than the Victorinox. This knife is extremely light weight and I no longer have issues with my hand hurting after heavy chopping. 5 stars

These aren't fancy silverware, obviously, but I was having trouble finding iced tea spoons, and these were extremely reasonably priced. Their long handles make them ideal for more than just iced tea. I use them in jars of jam or mayonnaise when I don't want to get my hands sticky.I bought these teaspoons to go with the regular flatware that matched these.
