King 47506 1000/6000 Combination Grit Waterstone

King 47506 1000/6000 Combination Grit WaterstoneI would have given 5 stars if there had of been a small bottle that came with the kit that could be used to hold water for the stones. It holds up well IF you know how to use and care for it. Sharpening with a stone ( actually a series of stones ) is not natural. To use one you should readup on a couple of internet articles on knife sharpening. I use a low grit, say 600-800 to get the shape and bevel right and bring the edge down to a rough sharp. This is fine for an axe, but, not a knife. After the bevel and most of the dull edge has been ground down ( no light reflects off the cutting edge ) move to the 1000 grit stone. At 1000 grit you will remove a lot less material , but all you are after is to get the scratches off the bevels and refine the edge a little more. When the edge is sharp enough to cut notebook paper without snags it is time for the 6000 grit stone. WARNING, the 6000 grit stone is soft and you can gouge it out in a single stroke. Keep it wet so the metal shavings float on the surface instead of being ground into the stone and reducing the cutting power of some of the surface area. This is a polishing stone, not a sharpeniing stone. It polishes the edge you put on with the 1000 grit stone. It polishes the bevels to a near mirror edge as well as helping to remove the little wire edge that ends up on all sharpenings. Now strop the edge (fatigue the wire edge till it comes off), you will know when it is complete when you run a finger UP the bevel and do not feel a small lip at the top where the edge is located. If you still feel the edge then strop some more; in a pinch, you can even strop on the palm of your hand. Remember to strop both sides alternately till the wire edge is gone. Now back to the 6000 grit stone and with LIGHT pressure, refinish the edge again but stop short of putting another wire edge on the blade. The edge now should cut newspaper when only supported by one side. Just remember one rule, the higher the bevel angle the lower the "Feel" and fine cutting power of the edge in general and the lower the angle the sharper the blade will feel. There is a trade off with high bevel angles on an axe that will keep the axe sharp longer and the low angle of a knife where it will require sharpening more often.

Now, wash off the stone surfaces and use an old cloth to scrup the surfaces. Get and use a Nagura stone to do a final cleaning and leveling of the 6000 grit side. Never use a Nagura stone on anything less than 6000 grit or you will eat it up and prematurely wear out the stone. Just keep in mind, the Nagura is for cleaning and trueing the 6000 and higher grit stones and should not be used as a sharpening stone itself. The second use for the Nagura stone is to create the sharpening "lather" needed to speed up the sharpening process. Place the stone under water and then to the work stone and act as if you are working on the edge. This process may need to be done 3 or 4 times. You will note a foam form on the top of your cutting edge mixed with a lot of water. Now sharpen your edge. You will get a faster and sharper knife.

I have been a carpenter for almost 12 years. The first 6 years were mainly rough carpentry and my stone of choice was an oil stone. I have since moved on to finish carpentry and woodworking. Razor sharp chisels and planes are a must now! And this combination stone, along with a 800-1000 grit waterstone, produce mirror sharp edges that last a long time. And, unlike an oil stone, waterstones can be honed flat again and cut the metal much faster. And you don't have to worry about the stone cloging.

These King Stones are legitimate Japanese Water Stones made in, you guessed it, Japan. They are extremely versitile and are the highest quality stones I have used. However, there are a few more good companies out there. Water stones are true to the craft of knife honing and sharpening and is a useful skill to teach yourself. I highly recommend watching virtuovice (YouTube Name) on YouTube for excellent tutorials on how to sharpen with stones.

The lower grit stones like the 250 and 400 are great for taking out chips in the blades or reprofiling the edge to fit your needs or preferences. As a camper who beats on knifes and axes, I really need this benefit to take out those chips and these stones do so beautifully.

A good stone grit to breach the gab between the lower grits and the finishing stone is the 1000 grit. This will help smooth out the edge and give it some great sharpness. It also makes finishing the edge with a 3000 or 4000 grit stone an easier and less time-consuming step in the process. 6000 and 8000 grit stones are not needed at all in my opinion. Finally, you should use a leather strop with a green and black compound to really get a good edge.

Bottom Line and Reccommending Sharpening System:

1.) 250/1000 grit King Water Stone

2.) 3000 or 4000 grit King Stone

3.) Leather strop with compound

You only really need the 250, 1000, and 3000 (or 4000) grit stones with the strop. I have seen the strop put a better edge than 8000 grit stones. Keep in mind a strop is only 30 bucks or so, and you could almost spend $100 on an 8000 grit stone. This reccommended sytem will make a butter knife scary sharp if you wanted it too. However, the stones are expensive and will loose shape over time depending on how much you use them. But the time you use them will definitely yield better results than a spyderco Sharpmaker (I have one). I also reccommend some sort of a stone holder like the Steelex Sharpening Stone Holder. This works well and makes it easier to work with.

Very good whetstone for regular use. Will sharpen any kitchen knife without ruining its edge if you know what you're doing, be they German knives (I use it with my Wusthofs) or more delicate Japanese knives, such as Global or Shun. Highly recommended.

Want King 47506 1000/6000 Combination Grit Waterstone Discount?

I have gone nuts with this thing. I have sharpened every knife in the kitchen except the steak knives with this awesome combo. The 1000 grit (brown side) is perfect for sharpening up dull knives and the 6000 grit (beige side) polishes the edge to a highly reflective, almost mirror finish.

HOWEVER, this combo is not good for an extremely dull edge or for a blade that needs to be re-profiled. It is possible to slowly re-profile with the 1000 grit, but for me it was an arduous and ultimately wasteful task. I ended up buying a 400/800 grit Norton tool sharpening stone from Home Depot for the knife I had to re-profile.

In conclusion, I am extremely satisfied with this combo King Stone, it does what it's supposed to do. I sharpen my knives at 15 degrees a side on 1000 then 6000, then I strop carefully with a paddle-backed leather strop and stropping compound from Bark River (not on Amazon). This results in crazy sharp knives.

The next step is Chosera stones, they are much more expensive, but I hear they are the cats pajamas :)

NOTE: I was not careful with the 6000 grit side at first and used too steep an angle, the knife actually bit into the 6000 grit and took off a small shallow chunk, the stone is still working great though.

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin Signature 7-Inch Flexible Blade Fillet Knife

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin Signature 7-Inch Flexible Blade Fillet KnifeIf you're looking for a great fillet knife in the sub $80 price range, this is it. I consider this to be every-day kitchen quality but not quite restaurant quality. If you fillet chicken more than 3 hours a day, then I doubt you're considering this knife anyway.

It is very sharp and has a good flex for de-boning small game.

The only possible negative I want to draw attention to is this: the cutting edge continues to the point where the blade meats the handle. So, if you have a high grip you may lose some skin on your fore-fingers. In other words, get used to gripping this knife directly on the handle instead of choking up on it.

I love this knife!!! I have searched so long for a knife that would allow me to clean my chicken the way i want. I hate thick chicken and when i clean it its important that i can cut it as thin as possible. It cut my cleaning time by at least 20 minutes(i clean a big family pack at a time). I knew a filleting knife would be the best bet but everywhere i looked they were over $100. You cannot go wrong with this price and this model.

I bought this from a third party (not amazon) and i do have to complain about the packaging, the plastic was all cut but i wasnt going to complain because there was no way you could get the knife out so i know it wasnt used. Other than that i HIGHLY recommend getting.

I am an avid trout fisherman and I would recommend this knife as the best bang for your buck. I have used this knife for over a year now to fillet everything from crappie, which are easy, to pike, which are a little more complex, and it has not disappointed. Only bummer is that I had to contact Henckels so they could hook me up with a sheath, but I knew that when I bought it so I won't criticize for that.

BergHOFF Neo Boning Knife, 5-Inch Black

BergHOFF Neo Boning Knife, 5-Inch BlackI like this Berghoff knife quite a lot. It is as sharp, balanced and well honed as any fillet/boning knife I have used. I have a VERY high standard for knives which goes back to my time living in Germany in 1979, during which I observed the art of the German knife manufacture in the famous Solingen area. If I could, would take off 1/2 point due to a few quirks in the design of the handle. The top and bottom "bolster" areas of the knife aren't comfortable for a softer female hand (too "crisp" steel edges). But if you have a leathery hand, this probably shall not be an issue. All in all, if your boning project is simple enough, this will be an excellent knife due to a fine blade that will make quick work of any filleting, "Fleisch oder Fische" (translation from the German: meat or fish"). Make this a purchase if you understand that there is a better knife for every purpose. This is definitely a "Better Knife".

Wusthof 8-in. Classic Bread Knife.

Wusthof 8-in. Classic Bread Knife.I have yet to be disappointed with a wusthof knife. This one too, was sure to impress. Every knife in the "classic" series is perfectly balanced with a full tang. The bread knife slices through even the crustiest bread like it's pudding.

Let's face it you can buy a break knife for alot less money. If you are looking for quality, nothing and I mean NOTHING beats a product made by Wusthof. This German Company knows cutting knives and they are not about to 'cut' quality/materials to sell the same type of competitive product for $19.99. TV commercially advertised products (especially the buy one get one) are junk. Like when was the last time you tried using your kitchen knife to cut a steel pipe or saw a 2x4 in half. You want the BEST...you can't miss with this product...Amazon knows and carries the right stuff.

Oneida Satinique Dinner Knife 1-Pc Pack

Oneida Satinique Dinner Knife 1-Pc PackThe pattern is the same and these knives are great, but... they are different than what we have owned for 28 years. After counting only five from the originals, we needed to fill out the set. This newer version is longer, has a thinner handle, and has a much more serrated edge than the originals. We had purchased forks from another seller and found those also were longer. Obviously a later cast. Considering the age of our set, we are not complaining; it's just good to have a larger, more-matching set.

This is not the same as the original. It is a cheaper manufacturer and materials. The serrations are bigger and sharper, so the knife is less elegant.

The knives are very nice looking and fit well with our flatware pattern and feel nice in your hand. The knives don't cut especially smoothly--tears the meat somewhat but gets the job done. The serrations seem larger and further apart than other steak knives I've used so maybe that's the difference? Overall I'm very pleased with them and may purchase another set for when we have larger parties.

I purchased these for my son as a gift. He was thrilled! My husband, who is a bit of a culinary snob, was also very impressed. As far as he is concerned, the name Henckels means quality. There is substance to the knife without being overbearing for women with small hands. The gift box made the the knives even more outstanding. The gift arrived before the promised date in tip top condition.

These knives are sharp. One of the reasons i bought them was that they are entirely in stainless steel, a single piece, so they could match my other flatware on the table and are also easy to clean. I've been cleaning them in the dishwasher and it's been ok. The logo on the blade is big so they do not look that nice on the table if your flatware style is clean and elegant and you're having a fancy dinner. But as the focus must be the food anyway, the logo might go unnoticed. For those who like heavy knives, it's not a good choice. But they do cut very well anyway, which is the most important.

Speedy Sharp

Speedy SharpI love how fast the speedy sharp sharpens my pruners, hori-hori, and other gardening tools. After using a file to sharpen, which is harder to do and takes a couple minutes, using the Speedy Sharp was a revelation just a few strokes put a fresh edge on my blade and kept me pruning away happily with cleaner cuts and less effort.

My favorite thing is that the Speedy Sharp fits in my pocket, so for marathon days of pruning, I can sharpen every hour or so and keep a good edge on my pruning shears and lopper. It works on everything, scissors, knives, garden tools.

And it's made of some material that is supposedly so strong that only a diamond can scratch it. They have a lifetime guarantee, so if you do manage to nick it with your giant diamond ring (yeah, like that's gonna happen), you'll be all set to pick up a freshie from the company.

Seriously this is an awesome tool. Every gardener should have one.

This is a _must have_ for the outdoorsman or survivalist type. It's rock-simple with no moving parts. Those in the metalworking industry will immediately recognize this as a disposable carbide lathe bit, albeit a little thinner. The uses I've found so far:

1. Sharpening yes indeed. It does the trick, and fast. It works best on longer straighter blades (lawnmower blades, machetes, etc), won't sharpen serrated blades. No biggie, tho. Will shave mild steel so effectively it actually makes a curl ("swarf") of steel, you're actually whittling the steel. WARNING-steel swarf is very flammable. I noticed that harder steels and cast iron make more of a fine powder residue. Will also sharpen shovels for ease of use in the garden. It's best for touching up edges, but not for a fine, keen edge or initial sharpening. For razor-sharp edges, angular control is essential. The DMT sharpening kit worked far better for this purpose. Also, as in machining-watch out for "chattering". This is mechanical oscillations during material removal. The speedy sharp does this as other industrial carbide bits, resulting in an irregular, bumpy edge. When sharpening, I frequently change the horizontal axis (not the edge angle) to reduce this. For best results, correct it early. It seems most frequent on stainless steels, least frequent on mild steel.

2. Firestarting more like fire *hazard*. The recent proliferation of ferrocerium ("mischmetal") based firesteels illustrates the limiting factor -a good scraping surface. Knives are okay, but a finer edge won't be sharp very long. Also, the approach angle is important. The speedy sharp is the missing link -it turns firestarting efforts into fire-inevitability. For spectacular fire starting, shave off some of the ferrocerium slowly and place the unburned shavings in a pile. For a bright, high-temperature fire, add magnesium shavings. Google "Doan Machinery" or Doan firestarting, these are the best. Doan magnesium blocks are sold here on Amazon. Warning-burning magnesium is extremely hot, even small quantities of magnesium will burn through metal foil. Note-perform all firestarting trials and experiments outside. The first time I tried this indoors, hot molten metal cascaded an all directions in my kitchen floor and sent my dogs fleeing in terror.

3. At my job, we often mesh or combine padlocks in restricted access areas where multiple parties have access. I use it to engrave my employer's name into padlocks, which works *far* better that colored tape or Dymo/P-Touch solutions that peel off or fade with time. I can actually scratch letters very deep into the metal. Not pretty, but very effective.

I bought 2-3 more, since I noticed the price is climbing. I also removed the plastic handle, I have enough callous that I don't need it, and it makes it more compact. Keep the tip cover when not in use, a carbide bit will do a *lot* of damage bouncing around if it contacts other objects.

Pros-cheap, almost maintenance-free, very effective for multiple uses, small, limited only by your creativity.

Cons-(this is a tough one)...well, I didn't think of it first...it encourages latent pyromania (in me, anyway)...I'll have to mull this question.

Buy Speedy Sharp Now

Wow, sharpens quick or hones just as quickly. Lightweight, takes up little space and really works well. If you get a tad too aggressive with your sharpening it will take off more steel quicker than you might think, go easy. I bought several for gifts and all my knife carrying friends are ecstatic.

Read Best Reviews of Speedy Sharp Here

This thing works exactly as advertised it quickly and easily sharpens and/or hones any steel blade you can throw at it.

I tested it only over a dozen different blades and it had no problem cleaning up their edges. I even used it to put a scary-sharp edge on a Cold Steel machete that came almost as dull as a steel knife blank (after I gave it a basic grind with a Dremel tool).

It's fairly simple to use, but I feel that the instructions could be a little more detailed in order to prevent over-sharpening and the like.

Also, one totally minor nitpick is that this thing is clearly cheaply mass-produced somewhere overseas and isn't of the highest build quality. Since it's carbide, the actual business end should last forever, but the rest of it ain't super high-quality. Again, that's just a totally minor comment as the thing wonderfully performs its intended function...

Mundial W5621-10 10-Inch Curved Micro-Serrated Edge Bread Knife, White

Mundial W5621-10 10-Inch Curved Micro-Serrated Edge Bread Knife, WhiteI bake incredible loaves of bread three times a week in a cast iron dutch oven. The loaves are nearly 10 inches in diameter with a crispy crust and a moist interior. This incredible knife will cut these big loaves of bread even when they are still too hot to touch from the oven. A room temperature loaf can be sliced 1/4" thick which makes a see through slice. Hard crust, soft crust no matter what crust or interior, this knife slices bread like it was butter. The blade has micro serrations and larger serrations and is curved perfectly for slicing bread. This amazing Mundail knife has a large handle, sized to fit a man's large hand. The handle looks big and my wife complained about how big the handle was UNTIL she cut her first slice of bread. It instantly became "her" bread knife, the result of one slice. My wife would never have purchased this knife due to the lack of a wooden handle and no made in Germany etching. As for me, I would by this knife again even if it only came in pink. LOL Five other bread knives, all way more expensive, have now been retired permanently. What a slicer!

This one is going back. It had just a few reviews, though they were positive so I gave it a try. I wanted to like this knife, but I just can't. The handle is fine, the blade material is even fine, but the fundamental design is flawed. If it weren't advertised as a bread knife, it might even be fine. If you buy this for bread slicing though, you'll be disappointed. The pictures don't reflect it, and the "micro-serrated edge" is misleading. This knife is fairly thick for bread slicing, and the poor edge design more rips and tears than slices cleanly.

Their definition of micro-serrated is that one side of the blade has serrations (which feel more like protrusions from the edge, rather than being inset and ground into the blade) with scallops on the other edge. This causes your nice soft loaf of bread to be ripped and shredded, not a clean swift slice at all.

I was expecting it to have scallops on both sides, or even just one side with smaller serrations or scallops within each larger scallop on the edge. This was not the case, leading it to be thicker than it should be (makes lots of crumbs).

I've always used the forschner/victorinox scallped bread knives as my every day tool for slicing breads and pastries, and many other tasks. The mundial was a disappointment and will be returned to amazon, in favor of another victronox.

Core Bamboo Matte Finish 3-Piece Modern Bamboo Cutlery Set, Lime

Core Bamboo Matte Finish 3-Piece Modern Bamboo Cutlery Set, LimeThese are literally "flatware" they almost redefine the term, so well does it suit them. They're surprisingly easy to clean. They're relatively easy to use. The fork is a little wonky as it is literally flat, so there's no curve to assist with leverage. But it works just fine. I've had veggie pulled pork, messy pastas, maple syrup... The works on these things. They clean up easily and work just fine.

I first found these sets at marshalls and got them for school. I fell in love with them and wanted to get more for the following year so I got three more colors. They are easy to wash and the knife is actually pretty sharp. I took my sets camping and they cut through steak and chicken. They are easy to was and really light too. The only downside that one of my friends mentioned is that the fork and spoon are shallow. For me it is not a big deal and I didnt notice until he brought it up but if you like to eat soup or something like that it might be a little harder. Over all I really love this set, and the colors are fun and bright, better than a plain silver!

Presto PS-10 Anodized Aluminum Meat Slicer, Belt Drive Transmission, 10" Blade, 23-25/128&#034

Presto PS-10 Anodized Aluminum Meat Slicer, Belt Drive Transmission, 10' Blade, 23-25/128' Width x 12-115/128' Height x 16-3/32' Depth
  • Adjustable slicing knob
  • 10-inches Blade
  • Reliable and dependable belt drive design
  • Built-in sharpener
  • Removable carriage for easy maintenance

Admittedly, my experience buying this product caused me a lot of grief. It took 3 months for Presto (and Amazon) to get it right. I first ordered the slicer a week or two before Christmas 2012. It was backordered. It finally showed up on February 26th and when I turned it on, all I got was a loud hum from the motor. The blade was not turning at all. I thought maybe it was shipped with the blade in a locked position so I began to fiddle with it only to realize that the blade housing was bent and wedged against the blade preventing it from turning. Furthermore, the blade itself was gouged in the places where it made contact with the housing. I was furious! I had waited so long for this to arrive and now this! So I composed myself, requested a return from Amazon, and they arranged for UPS to pick it up from my house (without me being home) the very next day. They also submitted a replacement order. The second slicer showed up within 10 days and, thanks be to god, when I hesitantly set it up and turned it on, it happily hummed along just as it should. So at the end of the day, it took a while and it was an upsetting experience, but I'm very happy with the final product. I'm a former chef and I can tell you unbiasedly that it cuts beautifully. Paper thin slices of ham and turkey with little to no strain on the motor. My only reason for giving it 4 out of 5 stars is that the instructions state that its not meant to slice cheese (which I did not know prior to receiving it). Based on the power of the motor I suspect some harder cheeses will be ok but softer cheeses not so much. It's also not the easiest machine to clean. Not to mention the fiasco with the delivery. Other than that this is a great product. I would say even amazing considering the price (it really is a bargain espcially when compared to the flimsy Chefs Choice slicers that are almost as expensive and some models even more expensive) and they dont deliver nearly as good a product not to mention the performance of the slicer which really is the biggest reason for getting this machine. I highly recommend this slicer.

I guess us Americans needed a French company to remind us that this is an efficient shape and tool for the job. Before this I was using chunks of silicon carbide stone which is a bit dangerous. The shape is long, thin, and slightly rounded so it will go over the curved bevels easy. I'll be forcing it to become more rounded as time goes by using it. As far as the mineral make up of the natural whetstone here is more information.

1. This stone is a hard gray novaculite. Unlapped, and unrefined.

2. The polish left by the stone is high, and the stone will not remove a considerable amount of metal without a lot of force. Even so, the grit can be about 200 + with extreme force. In comparison, a coarse silicon carbide will remove metal much faster.

3. Being unlapped, the polish should increase over time, however the abrasiveness will be cut down. Thus what I will be left with is a polishing stone to be used at about 1000 grit.

4. This stone does not have the potential of ever doing a great mirror polish.

5. This type of stone with it's hardness and natural makeup will last forever.

So although it is neither a great abrasive, or a great polish, it has it's place in my whetstone lineup for sharpening curved blades.

Cambridge Silversmiths Carnival 20-Piece Flatware Set, Service for 4

Cambridge Silversmiths Carnival 20-Piece Flatware Set, Service for 4I guess these would be OK to take on a picnic or a packed lunch, but they are just too light for me to feel comfortable using them every day at home. The plastic is much lighter than the stainless, thus they feel 'unbalanced' and insubstantial. I wanted flatware that's not "flat," but this, although cute looking, just doesn't fit the bill. This has put me off any flatware with plastic handles. You get what you pay for.

After a few months use the forks, spoons, and knifes got REALLY dull, rust starting appearing and they started falling apart. I had to replace them with good quality SOLID metal ones. :(

I got these because they were inexpensive and didn't have the uncomfortable sharp edges that the inexpensive metal sets had, and because the colorful aspect was appealing. They're mostly usable, but they have some unfortunate flaws. The worst thing I've found is that the (hollow) plastic portion gets liquid trapped inside it, so you have to be careful when washing the pieces so that you don't wind up flavoring foods with soap. For the same reason, the teaspoons are not appropriate for use in tea or coffee. Also, as another reviewer noted, none of the utensils feel well-balanced. I've had the set for a little over three years now; it does show small spots of rust, particularly around the base of the knife blades, but for the most part it's held up reasonably well. If I were buying a new set, I wouldn't buy this one again--I'd go for metal.

I bought this flatware set because it had vibrant colors and would match my dinnerware set. Also I would know instantly if I threw away the flatware by mistake when clearing away the dishes. It is easy to see which spoons or forks were missing instantly by looking at the hanging rack that comes with it. Unfortunately, the silver ball on the end of the flatware is made of plastic and with little use cracked and came off easily. The silver ball on the tip had to be made of metal and secured much better so it wouldn't have cracks. Now I have to prop it up on the rack instead of have it hanging with the rest of the flatware from the set. Otherwise it is comfortable to use, grips easily in your hand. Just wished they would have used better material it doesn't last long, good idea just not quality product.

I've had this set for around 6 months now. Two pieces, a spoon and a fork have already broken. Much of it has to do with the tiny plastic balls at the top of the flatware. I will not buy this set again.

It looks adorable, however, for everyday use, it's no good. They will look beautiful for about 3 months and then start to break and the silver on the top will wear off and the colors will become dull and lifeless. I suggest buying a different set.
