Chicago Cutlery Forum 5-3/4-Inch Veggie Knife, Sheath PackagingI bought the knife from Wal-Mart, so I can only assume it's the same as this one. My excitement for having a dedicated "veggie" knife quickly faded after having cut my first tomato. Then any enthusiasm that was remaining has completely died in the few uses after that.

My biggest gripe with this knife is in the way it is sharpened. The blade is only sharpened from one side. It is very sharp; however, the sharpened portion is shaped like a wedge. I'm not sure if this is standard practice for veggie knives, but it makes it extremely hard for me to use. The knife drifts horribly to the right while attempting to cut things. I can't cut anything straight. I've tried it with tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, apples, onions, peppers, and pineapples. Everything I try to cut suffers from the same drifting problem. I get the feeling that if I were left-handed I might be able to use this to my advantage, but alas I am not a lefty.

This is the best knife I have ever known to cut vegetables and fruits. Makes cutting easier and quick and you don't have to strain while the knife does its part. Excellent buy!

light weight, comfortable handle. We find cutting with knife is a little awkward. We've never owned a veggie knife so it could just be how we are using it.

Reed & Barton  Sea Tails 2 Piece  Gift SetI was happily surprised at the workmanship on this both the bowl and the spoon are beautiful worth the money.

The product itself is so beautiful. The spoon is well made and the bowl is lovely and very well made and has some heft to it. The underside of the bowl is not finished like the top so if you turn it upside down it has the edges exposed and not refined as you would expect in bowl this price. It is stainless steel made in china.

The reason for the one star is I purchased this as a gift and the recipient happened to be there when it arrived so I gave it to them and noticed that when the item was taken out of the packaging the box the bowl and the spoon are in was not sealed and the the plate was noticeably wiped down clean, it did not have that new sheen on it. I have enough experience with dishes to know when something has been used and washed, it was very cold when we received it ever wipe the mirror when its wet and when it dries you can see the streaks. Well the package came out of the cold and into the warm house it caused condensation and you can see the wipe marks and had not been wiped well in one edge and still had some residue of food.

The recipient was very gracious and loved the gift but we both new the truth of the matter without remark.

If this was a warehouse deal I would understand but this was specifically stated as NEW.

I also have a set of carbon steel Wustof knives I bought about 30 years ago for about $400 then. They are packed away somewhere at the moment so I bought these Kitchen Aid ceramic knives in a pinch.

You get what you pay for.

It is OK for lower end knives but never gets them as sharp as my Chefs Choice. The minosharp is simple and quick but so is the Accusharp which is close to 1/5 the price.

Ultimately, manual sharpening with a stone is slow but gets you razor sharpness.

Not recommended. You have plenty of other options.

Higher price, slightly faster sharpening, more versatile, very very sharp but not razor sharp, easy to useChef's choice

Similar price (depends on brand), slower sharpening, requires skill, knowledge and practice but with all that you get the sharpest edge = good quality whetstones use the water stones less messy than the oil stones but both are effective

I've used it for about a year. it gets a knife sharp enough for sushi work in about 2 minutes. Don't push down too hard or you might damage the stone wheels. Sooner or later you'll have to get new wheels. Don't know how easy that is.

The Hubby and I have an agreement. If he wants good vittles to appear before him on a regular basis, he must make sure my knives are sharp. To that end and because he loves gadgets & food, he owns several whet stones and knife hones that take way too much time for me to use. He bought me this to do quickie honing sessions on my knives that take the most abuse (santoku, paring and slicing knives). It is easy to use and generally does a good job. It is not all that good at taking gouges out of knives. Nor will it help you guys who think that just because those food network people drag their sharp edges across the cutting board to scape things into a pile that you can do it too (Read: it can't help you if you square off your edge). However, if you take reasonable care of your knives and understand proper knife care, this is an awesome tool to have. It is especially helpful for those inbetween knife sharpenings and when you are chopping a lot of food.

It makes dull knifes sharper, maybe not quite shaving-sharp, but reasonably sharp. Plastic construction feels fairly solid, though sometimes I wasn't quite sure if I had the angle right through the guides, especially on curved blades. There's about an inch toward the handle that the sharpener can't really get to with the cover on. Would be nice to have a 3rd fine wheel for honing (the two included ones are medium & coarse).

This is my first sharpener of it's kind, so I wasn't really sure what to expect and don't really have a point of reference.

Wusthof Classic 2-Piece Hollow Ground Asian Seta friend brought this knife to a group cooking session yesterday I have never used a more well balanced, comfortable instrument. I diced over 20 pounds of potatoes in no time. I WANT THIS KNIFE!

I purchased this knife several months ago, and it continues to be my favorite knife. In fact, I use it more frequently now than my chef's knife because of the flatter bottom, thinness, and lighter weight. I was afraid that I might be buying a "specialty" knife that wouldn't get much action, and I ended up with the opposite.

PROS:

shape, light weight, and thinness are perfect for chopping/slicing almost anything

It is super, crazy sharp. The first time I wiped the side of it down with my kitchen sponge, it sliced through the sponge effortlessly. I was thankful for the lesson, as I've been extremely mindful of that while using it.

The smaller knife is a great bonus, though I can't say that I use it any differently than my other paring knife.

I had originally planned to buy a Shun knife but when I tried it out in a store it felt too big, heavy, and awkward in my hand. (I am 5 feet tall and have relatively small, but strong hands). The Wusthof fits me just perfectly. I've been using both knives for a couple of months now and find that they do a great job without stressing my hands or wrists. I mostly use them for fruits and veggies. I strongly recommend that if you are new to quality knives you should go to a store and handle a bunch to see what feels most comfortable in your hand then buy it on Amazon where the price can't be beat, especially with free shipping. I like the storage box that the knives came it. I set it in a drawer and keep the knives in it. It keeps the knives safe and me safe from them! I must say that the hollows on the santoku knife edge don't seem to stop food from sticking, but I don't find that to be a problem.

Shun Ken Onion 7-Inch Cleaver

Shun Ken Onion 7-Inch CleaverI've wanted a nice cleaver since I saw the Mortal Kombat character 'Meat' hacking away at his foes with a sweet pair of them, or was it the Swedish Chef recklessly flailing away in the kitchen on the Muppet Show in the mid 70's? Anywho. Due to a youthful affinity for the tool paired with the occasional lite butchery I've been doing from watching too much of the 'Food Network', i felt it was time to invest in a piece that was sturdy, functional & decorative. The Shun Ken Onion Cleaver does not disappoint on any of these criteria. It's like having one of those decorative battle-axes or Harry Potter swords on the wall that is actually functionally useful for cooking. It easily dispenses with meats, is well balanced, sharp & ergonomically feels like an extension of your hand. When the zombie apocalypse comes to wipe out humanity, I have no doubt that my Shun Ken Onion Cleaver will be a highly effective tool when close range combat becomes a necessity.

This is my third Shun knife and my second Ken Onion. They come quite literally sharper than a razor in that the edge lasts longer and it unbelievably sharp. I sharpen mine about once a month. Sending to Kershaw would take way too long. Blade is heavy and very thick, great for cutting through bone (which is why I bought it) but still sharp enough to slice through bits of skin. If you want the images to remain longer clean them with a gentle toothbrush or they will come off over time. Ergo handle very comfortable to use. Also have the 7" santoku knife with same handle. Look very attractive sitting on the counter and ready for action when needed. Love it!

Like all the Ken Onion knives, it's a thing of beauty. Unfortunately, the first time we used it, to break down a chicken, it chipped--a half-moon eighth of an inch crescent whacked out of the center of the blade. This was on a quality cutting board, and with proper technique, at least the way we understand it. We certainly weren't trying to hack through PVC or something. Sent it back for a refund. Our other Ken Onion Shun knives are keepers, though definitely on the more fragile side--not to be tossed around like cheaper cutlery. This cleaver though didn't cut it.

This is a very nice cleaver, very sharp, very solid and I personally like the style of the handle(I have big hands). It has a thick blade with a good wieght and was very sharp on receival(still is). It has made all the other chefs I work with quite envious. I have used it to chop a few things, mostly small and large cartilage joints, poultry frames and smaller bones like ribs with no problems at all, the edge has stayed sharp all the way through... so far.

I will continue to use my larger cleaver for more heavy duty carcase breakdown and keep this one for special occasions, although I am sure this cleaver would have no problem going through just about anything without dinging the blade.

If you have the money to blow this is a stylish useful tool to have around the kitchen

This is my 5th Ken Shun collection piece in addition to the 4-pc steak knife set, and my husband and are completely amazed and impressed. Yes, these knives are a bit on the expensive side, but they are worth it, even according to my hubby who leans more towards the "frugal" side. Interesting back story: I had previously purchased a Global cleaver (also through Amazon) and with it being my first cleaver and having nothing to compare it to, thought it was pretty good. My "frugal" hubby (after going a bit pale when I told him the price) used the cleaver tonight for our usual task of hacking through chicken bones. I asked him how the job went and he said: "There was no comparison! I hardly had to apply any pressure at allit was like chopping through butter, no resistance." My hubby(who is is a very tough sell, especially with expensive kitchen items) was also pleased with balance and feel of the knife. Although I haven't used it yet, I'm very much looking forward to it. In conclusion: if you are in the market for a good cleaver and can spare an extra $100 in your budget, get the Ken Onion Shun you will not be disappointed. We've been building our collection of the years and will continue to do so.

Wusthof Classic 2-3/4-Inch Trimming KnifeThis knife was a gift from my daughter, and of the two small knives in my set, this is the one I reach for the most. The size and balance are perfect, and the shape of the trimming blade is ideal for all small paring and trimming tasks.

I do not put this or any of my knives in the dishwasher, although I've seen a reference that they are dishwasher-proof.

I love the quality of the Wusthof Classic series. This trimming knife is no exception.

It had held up as good as the day that I bought it. The "China" printed on the side opposite of the Katana lable did throw me off at first but this is true Japanese steel. I breakdown tenderloins, fish, chicken, calimari, and all various vegetables. Potatoes don't stick, cheese doesn't stick. I'd still pick a damascus Shun, Ginsu, or Kyocera over this, but the whole set is beautiful and affordable. I would recommend this for ANY CHEF. This knife has an excellent feel in the hand. The handle flows from the blade like a piece of art. I fell in love with Japanese steel ever since I saw Kill Bill, and whenever I use this knife I feel like a Samurai. The blade is beautiful and holds a an edge the is like non other. This knife was a gift from someone close to me, initially I thought I would like another knife with a more prestigious name, but after using this knife for a year, I was so impressed, I bought some to give as gifts to other people who also appreciate its quality.

I bought this knife for my girlfriend (now wife) 6 years ago and it has been her daily kitchen knife since then. It has seen a lot of abuse since then and it still going strong. The only noticeable wear can be seen where the black part of the handle meets the blade. It has slightly separated, but is only noticeable when you really look at it. Other than that the blade is in need of a good professional sharpening. I am slightly amazed at how well it has lasts considering that my wife routinely leaves it submerged in water in the sink, stores it in a cluttered drawer, and has used it consistently for so many years. Definitely worth $50.

Epicurean Non-Slip Gripper Cutting Board with Silicone Grippers

Epicurean 18 by 13-Inch Non Slip Gripper Cutting Board, Natural with Red Silicone GrippersI have no complaints about the cutting surface. My issue is with the non-slip feet at the corners of board. These non-slip feed actually raise the surface of the cutting board a bit off the counter top, so if I do any heavy chopping, the board can bounce some (e.g. the board bends in the middle because it is not flush or near-flush with the counter). It can be very annoying to chop with this bouncing action. So, it might be better to buy this board without the feet, and just put a non-slip map underneath when using it.

I have had my 3 Epicurean boards for a week now and am really pleased, because:

* they are lightweight which helps when transferring ingredients to a pan or the peelings to the bin

* they are easy to clean (I have only hand washed but they do go in the dishwasher)

* they dry quite quickly (so am hoping they won't go slimy or stinky like my last regular wooden boards did)

I am thinking of getting another one to replace my carving board so that is the best endorsement that I can think of.

I just got my new non-slip, slate colored epicurean cutting board and I was slightly surprised to see knife marks left on the board's surface after just the first use. Reading the epicurean website, I quickly learned that this is common, but I was surprised that I could feel the marks on the board as I ran my fingers over the surface. I understand that a softer board is better for a knife's edge, but I guess I was hoping the board would stay mark free for longer than the first use. Perhaps the lighter color boards don't show the marks as well as the slate colored board. If anyone has had a similar experience, please leave a comment, I would like to know that it is not just my board. Thanks.

I like the light weight and that it doesn't slide when using. However, disappointed that it shows cutting marks so easily. I'm pretty particular about how things look if I'm leaving them out on my counter. After only a couple of weeks of using it, it looks "worn." Wood cutting boards don't show the wear any where near as much as this does this quickly.

I really, really like this cutting board. It does not gouge easily, even with very sharp knives, and the silicone grippers keep it from sliding around on the countertop. I was worried when I got it that the grippers might fall off easily, but so far they've shown no sign of that being likely. If you're looking for a good-quality cutting board that will last you a while, I would definitely recommend this one. It's much nicer than plastic ones, and easier to care for than wooden ones.

Harold Imports ChestnutterAfter buying 2 of these for myself and a friend, they both fell apart after several uses (the hinge pins came out and have been re-installed several times), the blades bent and lost their sharpness. A great idea but horrible construction.

The idea of chestnutter is good but needs some improvements. Due to the depth of chestnut chamber, the cutter can only reach the big size chestnuts. Also the cutter is not sharp enough.

This is a great idea. I bought it a few years ago as a gift for my parents who love roasted chestnuts. It really worked well until it broke after maybe a dozen uses. I did not buy this from this seller the bad review is for the product. I don't know what kind of metal it's made of but the inner part broke and Amazon would not help because it was bought by a third party vendor.

This device provides a much safer way to lance the skin of chestnuts before roasting. It could use more leverage, however, the short handles require more effort than my wife can exert and therefore I get the job of breaking the skin.

I've never had an easier time dealing with cavalry: even if you don't knock the rider right out of his saddle, his mount won't exactly be in any condition to let him go around for another charge, if you know what I mean. Definitely worth the extra fifty bucks for those last couple of inches on the blade the added weight really improves the balance of this already-excellent polearm. Would definitely be interested in purchasing 10 or 12-foot models if they became available.

Cons: None, although the addition of a spear point or maybe a billhook or two would make it a lot easier to snag the more nimble riders (like those pesky mounted archers!)
