Kuhn Rikon Julienne Peeler with Blade Protector, Stainless Steel Handle

Kuhn Rikon Julienne Peeler with Blade Protector, Stainless Steel HandleI can't say enough good things about this julienne peeler. I first bought an Oxo julienne peeler, and it was really a piece of junk. I used it twice and saw that it was steadily going downhill from the first use (the little tines started bending right at the first usage when only julienning a carrot!), so I returned it right away. I had remembered seeing this much more expensive Kuhn Rikon julienne peeler with much better reviews and decided to give it a chance. Oh my goodness, the difference is amazing. It performs so much better, and I've now used it several times and the tines have not moved a bit out of position. I love the nice all-over stainless steel design. Very functional, beautiful, and looks like it will be very durable also. WELL WORTH the extra money! Oh, I almost forgot to mention, I also used it on zucchini and didn't have any trouble. I took a little bit lighter approach to the zucchini than I would with a carrot since it is a softer vegetable. The way I avoid hurting my fingers is to lay the vegetable on the cutting board and spear one end with a fork. Hold the vegetable by the fork and then julienne away!

Now, to be perfectly frank, I like this peeler. However, it does merit a little extra finger watching when using. I won't call myself an expert cook by any means, but I know my way around a kitchen.

Using this peeler I've managed to cut myself quite a few times. It's not for lack care it just slips sometimes and the sharp, knife-like tines that make the julienne cuts very easily can slide and julienne your fingers or the area between thumb and forefinger.

Again, it's a good piece to have in the kitchen. It just merits a little care in its use.

I julienne lots of carrots so this works great! Seems like there's a bit of a trick to using it w/o having a clump on bottom where all the julienne pieces stick. It depends on how you use it. I was able to mess around with it and get julienne strips no problem. Recommended purchase, am buying several more for family members.

Nice sturdy peeler. Very sharp. It looks like it would last for years to come. The only down size is the Julienne size is a little too thin for Thai papaya salad. I had to return this and got the Kiwi Pro Slice Peeler (perfect size for papaya salad). I found the Kiwi peeler at a local Asian supermarket for 3 bucks.

Want Kuhn Rikon Julienne Peeler with Blade Protector, Stainless Steel Handle Discount?

I love julienned veges, but when dealing with just one carrot (eg for garnish) it seems a tad excessive to assemble a mandoline then do the cleanup (let alone pull out the food processor). This little gadget solves that problem perfectly. I've found the best way with carrots is to peel and trim both ends, then julienne one half of the carrot (working middle to end, rotating a quarter every cut), until you end up with a thin scrawny core attached to the rest of the carrot, which then becomes the handle to julienne the other half of the carrot. I end up discarding the core no real tragedy there since the core is usually a little bitter (and if not, hey, I'll just eat it).

Ginkgo Naples 20-Piece Stainless Steel Flatware Set, Service for 4

Ginkgo Naples 20-Piece Stainless Steel Flatware Set, Service for 4This flatware is really a fine bargain. It has the look and feel of a more expensive set of flatware (There is usually some trouble figuring this out from photos). They are not flimsy at all. The pattern is simple and contemporary and they are also very well-balanced. They are just slightly larger than standard flatware which is a feature I like, i.e. the tablespoon ladle seems to be slightly larger than the ones I've been using. I was afraid they might be too shiny and although they have a nice bright luster it is just slightly muted so they don't have the tacky look of cheapo flatware. It does have "China" stamped into the metal near the bottom of the knife blade by the handle. It doesn't bother me at all but make sure it doesn't bother you before buying.

Just beautiful! Can't find silverware like this in the stores for this price. Very elegant and will definitely last for many years without scratching or ever bending. Beautiful shine and a nice weight. The knife can also be used as "steak knife" as the edge is slightly serrated and very sharp. GREAT VALUE and superb quality!!!!

It is now February,2013 and my Flatware is still like new. . The inside of the spoons and the sides of the knives don't have any scratches and still shine with a mirror image. It's really amazing!

The Naples pattern is well balanced, a pleasure to eat with, comfortable to hold. It feels substantial, not like the fork tines will bend if you press down hard. I recommend the Naples pattern, and expect similar high quality with other Ginkgo patterns.

I didn't notice it is 18/0 stainless steel .... and in a matter of a month ( I purchased two sets ) they were discolouring and getting dark spots ... really a shame ... I wouldda paid a bit more for a better quality product of this design. I will say return was mega simple I first ask to exchange, and when I got the new pieces they were flawed as well, I re-opened a chat and in a few minutes a I had a return slip and credit and different brand of flatware on the way

How disappointing. They are solid, nice weight and seemingly flawless finish BUT we bought two sets for Christmas and found imperfections throughout. Unfinished metal, blemishes and areas that are painted/coated evenly. No problem, they sent us a new set. Problem solved. WRONG! After putting them thru the dishwasher a few times they are showing signs of RUST!

We are contacting the seller for a full refund

Very disappointed because these are identical to the ones at Williams Sonoma we'd been pining for.

Zwilling J.A. Henckels MIYABI 7000MC Chutoh Mid Size Utility Knife

Zwilling J.A. Henckels MIYABI 7000MC Chutoh Mid Size Utility KnifeI own many different professional knives, so I have opportunity to compare them on a regular basis. I maintain my knives well and use them with good technique. If you chop vigorously and scrape the cutting board with the knife edge and hack through bones or hard objects regularly, then Japanese knives might not be for you. The beauty of the Japanese knives is that they cut so well you don't have to hack through anything.

The knife does the work and cuts cleanly. Up until the last 10 years i was always told that German steel was the best and i was quite content with my Wustof and Henkels/Zwilling knives...that was until i encountered Japanese steel. The Japanese manufacturing and knife design has proven superior for me in almost every way. They have an elegance and refinement that is without equal. I absolutely love my shun and miyabi knives. Upon researching different knife steels I came upon the crucible powdered metallurgy steels like MC66 and Cowry. It was then I started paying attention to Rockwell C hardness scale and sharpening angle. I found out that my German knives were sharpened at 22 degree angles and with a Rockwell C running in the upper 50's( which explains why I have to hone them after each use) by comparison the Japanese knives like Shun and Miyabi are sharpened at 12-14 degree angles which is a thinner cutting edge and the Rockwell C is normally between 60-62. Those need to be honed after a few weeks use. However, this Miyabi 7000mc is at 66. That translates into, first of all, the ability to make a scary sharp edge and second, holding that edge with proper use for a much longer time. They stay wickedly sharp for over a month. I can't speak more highly of any knife! These are fantastic! But watch out...they are probably much sharper than any other knife you have ever used. They can easily nick your fingers with even the slightest pressure. You have to have good knife technique or you will hurt yourself.

Ginsu Chikara Series 2 Piece Japanese 420J2 Stainless Steel Carving Set with 8-InchCarving Knife an

Ginsu Chikara Series 2 Piece Japanese 420J2 Stainless Steel Carving Set with 8-InchCarving Knife and Fork; Bamboo Storage Case IncludedGot this knife as a present for my parents as their carving set is a million years old and dull. Didn't have much to spend but the price made me a little wary anyway as I didn't want a cheap knife. Didn't have anything to worry about as it turns out. Overall, I am very pleased with the knife and fork. The knife was incredibly sharp, had a good weight, and a thick blade so it did not bend at all. It went through the turkey like it was cutting butter. Can't speak to the longevity obviously, but this was really nice for the price.

The case is better than other reviews have indicated. The top easily slid off and the case is made of heavier wood than I had anticipated. The entire package is more formidable than I would have thought given the price so that was good. The only drawback of the case is the glass in the top is very flimsy, probably would crack or break very easily if you are not careful, but hey, who really cares that much. At the end of the day you could toss the top and still have a nice box in which to hold the knife.

The knife will probably arrive a little dusty. Mine seemed to have some carbon powder, I'm guessing it was sharpened and immediately packaged, so I made sure to wash it before I gifted it.

UPDATE

Had a chance to use this knife on a few occasions now and it is ridiculously sharp. Went through a ham like butter and carved a turkey in no time. There are better knives at higher prices but this is definitely a good one at this price.

I've had this set for several months now and it stands up very well. The knife holds an extremely sharp edge with minimal honing after every use. It's well balanced and slices through meats and birds with ease. Yes the box is relatively cheap but that is secondary for me. It holds the set in a drawer and isn't a display piece. Keeps the set free from knicks and scratches and looks fine. Mine was easy to open and close unlike the previous reviewer.

The knife set is just okay. The china stamp is on the blade and the filings are visible, typical Chinese workmanship. Cheap quality but will do the trick for my needs to take camping and just not to care what will happend with it. My other meat fork is made in Germany costs more and much better quality.

The wooden box, bamboo, came in cracked on the bottom and is a total throw away. I really do not need the box but could use it for other purposes.

Wil contact the seller about the cracked box.

Will not recommend this item but if if you need something that does the trick it will work. Next time I will spend more money for a better set. I think the better set worth the money.

Kuhn Rikon 4 Inch Periwinkle Paring Knife With Sheath

Kuhn Rikon 4 Inch Periwinkle Paring Knife With SheathThe Kuhn Rikon Nonstick Paring Knife is a very good value for a quality knife. We own several of these knives in different colors for use at home and in our shop. The different colors allow us keep the ones we use to cut materials in our workshop from accidently being used for food products.

The blade is *VERY* sharp and holds it's edge very nicely. The nonstick coating on the blade is a real plus as it helps to keep the knife clean as well as to keep it moving through thicker items. The snug fitting platic sheath is a welcome addition to safely store or transport the knife.

My only complaint is the light feel of the plastic handle. It isn't flimsy exactly, just lacks heft. This might just be a personal prefference issue and it hasn't stopped me from buying more of them.

Overall this is a very good paring knife at a reasonable price. Recommended!

After reading many glowing reviews, I decided to add three Victorinox knives to my kitchen. As advertised, they probably perform excellently. When I received them, however, I was turned off by the cheap look and feel of them. I kept the bread knife, but sent the other two knives back.

The knife cuts bread well, but I'd recommend a longer size for a more versatile blade. The seven inch blade is a little short for some wider bread loaves, but it's great for sandwiches. I think I might have liked the rosewood handles better for home use. In a commercial kitchen, the fibrox handles are ideal. I purchased two Chinese Kenda brand paring knives for 1.50 each, and the handles were EXACTLY the same as the "fibrox". (just an observation).

LamsonSharp Traditional Chinese Vegetable Cleaver

LamsonSharp Traditional Chinese Vegetable CleaverThe Chinese vegetable cleaver is my favorite knife. It is very easy to sharpen, very easy to rapidly slice or chop vegetables, and very easy to slide the knife under the cut vegetables and carry them to the cooking pot. I consider the Chinese cleaver to be much more convenient than the typical Japanese vegetable knife because if has a much larger blade, which makes it so much easier to use. Even though the blade is large, the knife is not heavy. Sharpen it often and keep a film of olive oil on it. It will last and you will love it. (This is NOT a meat cleaver. I broke my first Chinese vegetable cleaver by using it to cut frozen chicken.)

Lighter than the 8" chef's knife I usually use, but very sharp. Great time saver in lifting cut veggies and meat to the the pan/bowl. The handle is a bit wiggly and I wonder how durable it really is.

Overall, I am pleased with this knife. It was the only major knife type I still did not have, and I like it very much for chopping carrots, celery, and other "short" vegetables (NOT including potatoes). I get a really bad callous on the side of my index finger when I use it for too long, but I really like the heft and balance, and the fact that you can scoop up your veggies all at once to put them in the pot or wherever. Edge retention is only so-so, and I have to steel it regularly, and have used my diamond sharpener on it once so far. Would buy again.

Professional Flexible Fruit & Vegetable Carving Knife

Professional Flexible Fruit & Vegetable Carving KnifeIts a very delicate knife but works like magic..!!! perfect for making delicate rose petals. Must take a good care of the blade as it can bend easily.

Seller shipped the item fast, which is the only good thing about them. Knife looked great in the picture but did not perform well. The handle is very low quality and the pattern around it started peeling after the first use it. I used this knife to carve a red bell pepper and after that, the blade turned dull, black and spotted (see picture in the product page). I called the seller and explained what had happened. I had a very rude customer service rep who said that I was lying and the only way for that to happen to the blade was that I burnt it with a lighter. Are you serious?! I asked for the lady's name and she refused to give it to me, when I asked her why could she not tell me her name she said "you do not need to know my name, when you call us next time you won't be talking to me anyway since we have a lot different of reps".

Seller would not give a refund nor send a replacement. Why would anyone burn their knives? It just makes no sense. I have bought way cheaper knives that lasted longer than this one. I Hope that in the future the seller upgrades the quality of these knives and their customer service. It's not even about money at this point, it's about customer service and standing behind what you sell/advertise. If the seller had stated in the description "crap knife made with low quality materials" then I wouldn't be complaining. Stay away from these knives and seller and save yourself some money and time. I love it! It takes the lid right off no problem and there is no mess with the lid falling into the can. PERFECT PRODUCT. I LOVE AMAZON!

I have had this for less than six weeks and do not use it often. I have noticed that the magnet sometimes drops the severed lid into the can and the blade snags on the label and tears it. A really good can opener would not do either of these. So far I have had no problem with it actually opening the cans.

This is a horrible opener.

First, it doesn't always catch the can properly. You have to jiggle to get it to line up right. Sure cut my FOOT!

Second, it jerks when it's done opening the can, so usually it ends up splashing whenever I'm opening something that's liquidy.

After 2 frustrating months, this went in the garbage.

Epicurean Gourmet Cutting Board with Juice Groove

Epicurean Cutting Surfaces 15 by 11-Inch Gourmet Cutting Board with Juice Groove, Slate CoreThis is an excellent cutting board. It's nice to have a large board with a juice groove that is dishwasher safe. I prefer wood for cutting non-bacterial stuff like produce, but this is perfect for things like poultry. I also used it to carve a rotisserre chicken, and was quite pleased. The one minor flaw is that I have a granite countertop, and unless I place a towel underneath it slides a little if I'm doing some serious chopping. But as it's meant to be usable on two sides, I don't mind very much.

The board is very light for its size and appears to be quite durable. And it's easy to clean.

But it has a very hard feel--more like cutting on glass or granite than on a traditional wood or plastic board. If you do any chopping, it sounds like machine gun fire. And if you do slicing/rocking with a curved chef's knife, it's still has a pretty harsh feel. I still haven't used it long enough to judge whether it really doesn't dull knives any faster than wood--but I have doubts, given how it feels.

Also, out of the box it had a horrible smell--like a wet dog wearing a wet wool sweater. But after a run through the dishwasher, it went away. Not sure if it will ever reappear (tho I note that Cook's Illustrated described the device as having a bad, lasting odor).

Buy Epicurean Gourmet Cutting Board with Juice Groove Now

I've had this slate w/ black juice groove board in the 13 x 18 size for 2 years now. It is our only cutting board and we use it for cutting meat, veggies, and bread. Really, it had only the faintest of cutting marks on it up until a month or so ago. It was at that time a month ago that I started using a heavy meat cleaver to hack through turkey necks for our dogs' raw diet. Yes, it's showing considerable marks from hacking apart over 50 pounds of turkey necks with that meat cleaver, as you might have guessed.

It has no stains on it, though I suppose we don't really cut anything on it that would stain it, but I thought it worth mentioning that it hasn't discolored at all. It is a bit of a hassle to store it in our cupboards so we leave it out all the time, propped up on our counter. When we first got it I washed it a few times in the dishwasher but it does take up quite a bit of space so now we just give it a quick wash in the sink, easy breezy.

It still is a handsome cutting board even with those meat cleaver hacks and we'll continue to use it.

**UPDATE** Well, when I used the meat cleaver to cut apart 50 lbs of turkey necks with this cutting board, it survived. The same can't be said when my husband helped me out by hacking apart 30 lbs of turkey necks for our dogs' raw diet... he can swing the cleaver a lot harder than I can to cut through a turkey neck in one swing. The cutting board has met its end, the top layer has been chopped and marked up enough that it has peeled up, revealing a composite-type material underneath the pretty exterior. We'll continue to use this cutting board for raw turkey necks but we had to get a new cutting board for other tasks. So, to make a long story short, don't bring a meat cleaver down hard repeatedly upon this Epicurean cutting board. Yes, we should have known better. :)

Sharp looking cutting board, especially for those with black or dark countertops. I bought two and leave them out. They look best when oiled occassionally. This size is too big for the dishwasher, but it gets washed after every use anyway.

The board is a bit slippery, so I put 4 silicome dot feet on the juice groove side. I normally use the flat side because it is easier to slide chopped food off into the pot that way.

The board is noisy when you chop.

I've read other comments from the other Epicurean cutting surfaces reviewed here. Most give this product high praises...and a handfull do not.

I like it, so far (two weeks at the time of this writing)...haven't had issues with marks or gouges, or an odd odor or warping as experienced by some. My theory (at least with minimizing marks/gouges) is that you need to have sharp knives when cutting/chopping your food on this product. The knife is supposed to do all the work, with minimal effort on your part. If you work through your food with ease, you minimize your forcing through the food, and thus avoid digging into your board. Look for a professional knife sharpening service and have your knives sharpened on occasion.

Messermeister 4-Piece Edge-Guard Set

Messermeister 4-Piece Edge-Guard Set, BlackI had bought some Ultimate Edge knife guards and decided I needed more. I saw these instead and got them, since I wanted black ones also.

These work okay, but I noticed that they weren't very secure on thinner knives, including a nikiri and santoku. They moved with relative ease, which isn't what you want in a knife guard. You want the edge guard to have a nice secure grip on the blade. The Messermeisters unfortunately have a slightly larger gap than the Ultimate Edge edge guards.

Another thing I found was that it required a bit more attention to install on the knife. While the Ultimate Edge edge guards have slightly flared openings, these Messermeisters are straight with notched the corners on one side. It's very hard to see in the photo since it's black. But zoom in and you'll see it. The problem is that more often then not you catch your blade on the square corner when trying to slide it into the edge guard. It's a bit annoying sometimes. But it's not that big of a deal, really. I just wonder if they did that just to get around a patent.. Who knows.

VERDICT:

Unless you *really* have to have black or blue edge guards, go with the Ultimate Edge brand edge guards which are more secure and easier to use.

These are very serviceable edge protectors they're relatively inexpensive, fairly sturdy, notched at the heel-end for easy insertion, and hold onto their blades fairly snugly. I use them for all the assorted loose knives in my blade drawer, to protect both the blades and also the hands of those who reach within. I also use them when packing knives in my knife bag, as they help protect the fabric of the latter.

Minor nits: I wish the manufacturer also made these in 12" and 14" sizes, as I have several slicing knives (bread, meat and lox) in that range ... for which covers are a bit hard to find.

Recommended.

I am a culinary student and I have a knife kit that has quite a few knives. After a few close calls almost cutting myself as I removed items from the kit. I had a different style knife guard on my chef's knife(which is special to me) to keep it from getting damaged but it was a large clear shell that was simply too bulky and expensive to outfit my entire kit with. I found these and decided to give them a try. I am really pleased, they fit my knives very well with no excess bulk or weight. They also are quick to remove but still secure enough to stay on in transport. I was concerned that they would not stay in place on my thinner Japanese knives but they are secure even on my usuba. I have range of knives from different manufacturers (shun, henckels, and mercer) and they fit the same on all different styles of knives.

I have no complaints at this point. They do what they are meant to do without excess bulk and at a reasonable price. Highly recommended for anyone with kitchen knives that are not in a block.

Breville BJE200XL Compact Juice Fountain 700-Watt Juice Extractor

Breville BJE200XL Compact Juice Fountain 700-Watt Juice ExtractorI juice at least once a day as I primarily eat raw foods.

My Jack LaLane juicer finally wore out after 2.5 years of daily use. I was tempted to buy another but I liked the way everything including the pulp catcher is all in one unit. So glad I got the Breville.

This thing is POWERFUL, especially compared to "Jack LaLanne". It is so powerful I usually don't even use the pusher except to cover the top so your ceiling doesn't get covered with stuff. Other reviewers have mentioned that tendency. What wasn't mentioned is that the reason it does that is because the motor is so beefy that stuff will shoot straight up.

When juicing soft stuff I immediately cover the top with my hand.

The design of this thing is absolutely first rate. Even down to the plug, which has a moulded loop so that it is easy to unplug and plug in! No tool is required to remove the basket, as in most other juicers. Breville uses a combo of ingenious design and magnets to hold it in place!

Ease of use and fit and finish is perfect.

Clean up is really a 2 minute operation and I don't even own a dishwasher. It will stain eventually, as every juicer I have ever owned does. Carrot juice would make a great dye :-)

The pulp on this juicer is a bit wetter than the Jack LaLanne. The "Jack" had a much larger basket and a much slower rotation. I believe that may account for it. But it isn't much wetter just very slightly.

This juicer makes much smaller pieces of pulp though and my experience so far has been that it gets just as much juice from a pound of carrots.

Bottom line I can't imagine anyone not loving this unit.

UPDATE 3/26/2011 This thing is still going strong 3.5 years later. Folks I buy carrots by the 25 pound bag so I am HARD on juicers. And not one part has needed replacement!

This is my third juicing machine. My first was a Champion which served without problems for years. On the plus side it was powerful and durable. On the down side it was rather noisy, vibrated a lot and left a lot of juice in the pulp and was hard to clean. My second juicer was the omega screw machine which I still have. I bought it because it also did wheat grass. On the plus side it is quiet and juices anything, makes nut butter and extracts a lot of juice leaving very dry pulp. On the down side it is slow and worst of all the feed tube is really small. You have to do a lot of cutting to get things small enough to get into the feed tube. I pretty much only use it for wheatgrass now. The Breville is the best juicer I have had. It is an example of good product design in that it is simple, practical and attractive. It is powerful, has a feed tube large enough to take large whole carrots, beets and small apples. It is quiet, comes apart easy and cleans up quickly. The capture pitcher which nests into the machine has a nice cover so you can store the juice for later. If making juice is a hassle you're going to put off doing it. This juicer makes juicing easy and not a hassle.

Update Apr 2013 Still juicing! I make about a quart of green juice a day. The shredding disc and steel mesh were showing signs of staining and minor clogging. The residue wouldn't come off with hand-washing, so I decided to try some serious cleansing using a spray-on oven cleaner. Bingo! All the residue came off easily, opening all the clogged mesh holes and rejuvenating the shredding disc. None of the original parts have broken or cracked. I remain very satisfied with this juicer.

Update Dec 2012 The Breville Compact Juice Fountain works like new after 11 months of daily use! There have been no issues with the motor. The plastic parts have held up well but are veggie-stained. The shredding disc isn't as sharp as it was on Day 1, but it still works great. When the time comes, Breville sells replacement parts online.

Update June 2012 Still using the Breville twice daily and it continues to work well. No broken parts.

Original Review: Prior to purchasing the Breville Compact Juice Fountain, I researched other models and selected the Breville for its features and excellent customer reviews. I've been using the juicer daily since Jan 18, 2012 and continue to be satisfied with the unit. As with any centrifugal juicer, the pulp may not be "bone dry" due to the nature of the juicing process. But I'm not a purist, and any increase in my fruit & veggie intake is an improvement!

PROS of this unit

* The motor is powerful. The toughest veggie I've juiced is a quarter head of purple cabbage, no problem. Whole kale leaves, celery, carrots, broccoli, beets...juiced regularly without any trouble. I haven't tried juicing a sweet potato yet.

*Quick and easy to clean because there are only 4 parts: the food pusher, feed chute / pulp collection lid, pulp collection container and steel micro mesh filter. See in the video how effortless the Compact Juice Fountain is to assemble. I prefer this model to my friend's juicer that has the side-mounted pulp basket.

* Juice spout fits nicely into the opening of the pitcher lid. Juice doesn't splash all over the counter.

* Compact size makes it easy to leave on the counter to encourage frequent, if not daily, use. The pulp collection container measures 9 inches in diameter.

* Froth separator lid works well to separate the froth from the juice when pouring into a glass. Save the froth! It will liquify into more juice.

* There's a handy cord wrap in the base of the unit.

* Juicer cover, pulp container, filter basket and pitcher are listed as dishwasher safe. I prefer to hand-wash! Note that the inside of the juice collector (under the mesh filter basket) needs to be scrubbed well to prevent build-up.

CONS of this unit

* One speed means you cannot slow the shredder basket down for tough or leafy greens. I compensate by packing the chute with green and feeding it s-l-o-w-l-y.

* Small slices of fruit or veggies end up unshredded in the pulp container because there is a small gap between the bottom of the food chute and the shredding blades of the filter basket. The slices are thin enough (1/16 to 1/8") to fit through the gap. See the video for actual pulp results.

* The juice dispensing hole is hard to clean and gets a build-up. A small bottle brush gets some of it out.

TIPS for juicing and cleaning

* Rinse or clean the juicer immediately after juicing. Dried pulp is hard to clean off the mesh filter basket.

* Juice slowly for better results.

* Juice leafy greens first, then juicier fruits will wash the healthy green into the pitcher.

* Stack spinach into compact piles, and pack into the chute. This way whole baby leaves won't end up in the pulp container. Fill the chute and allow the juicer to slowly shred the greens. Add broccoli, grapes, brussels sprouts, etc. to the food chute while there is still some spinach at the bottom...no more broccoli florets all over the kitchen =)

* Nest and roll big leaves like kale and collards. You can even tuck a small piece of ginger inside for more efficient juicing.

Hope this helps you make an informed decision about which juicer best fits your needs. Happy Juicing!

OK, there are a million pro juicers here who can tell you all the reasons this type of juicer is best, another million who can tell you why a SLOW juicer like the Champion Brand are best if you want leafy greens juiced. My only experience until this week was with an OLD 15 year old juicer we paid about $70.00 for that took about a grocery CART full of fruits & veggies just to get a 12 oz. glass 1/2 full!

As a result, we used it one time and set it out in the garage until I finally sold it for $20.00 last month. But I saw a Jack La Lane infomercial and came to trusty old Amazon.com to see about trying again since these NEW juicers get more juice (or DO they?). I start reading and see so many more people liking this particular brand over Jacks model so then go to YouTube sniffing around. I take A MONTH DECIDING and bought this juicer from Amazon directly. Used it for just 2 days so I have no way to tell you about how it is best or worse, how it is changing my life, or anything earth shattering.

But I DO have something I CAN tell you. I don't even want a beer anymore. And I like beer. A LOT!!!! I haven't even tried any of the GREAT selection of included recipes that came included with the juicer. I just tossed in about 4 carrots, 1 small pear, 2 pieces of celery, 2 small red apples and it made over 16 ounces of juice! Blows my old mind (short trip). The weirdest thing of all to me at 60 years of age is I HATE carrots. HATE them. ANY form, hate them. Now, I can't get enough. And even weirder, I wasn't able to even eat any breakfast as I was too full. I don't remember anyone saying juice would fill me up. Usually if I had a V8 it just made me want a beer to go WITH it.

So all the expert juicers can decide which brand is best, which style is best. For my recreational use and for my being able to EASILY take it apart and fully clean in 10 minutes (and I am disabled, no, NOT from the beer!), I do a very rare thing. I give this a 5 star rating. As my experience with it grows, I will update this review as required as to reliability, stamina etc. My last and only prior juicer was such a nightmare to clean AND use, got NO juice, it makes this nothing less than shocking. To have so much juice, so much GREAT flavor, almost fun to operate and clean, who knows.....I may just end up skinny & healthy. But then after today's tomato. celery & zucchini with onion experiment, I can see myself wondering what a little Vodka might do for a little added flavor? Probably lucky for me that the only alcohol I ever liked was beer......

If I get into this in a big way and discover I like leafy green stuff juiced, and find this will NOT do that well, I will find someway to go the BIG bucks for a slow turning juicer that does that type juicing best. Heck, maybe I can recycle all my old beer cans to pay for it? Can't believe it took me 60 years to find a HEALTHY way to get juiced.

2 week update. After using this twice a day some days, once per day everyday for over a week I have problems. One, we have now ruined MORE than the cost of our juicer is clothing stains from flying juice and "pieces" no matter how careful we are. It also has the dreaded "pulp trapped inside the seam between the clear part and the grey plastic" problem. I have tried to no end to contact the manufacturer. On hold with voice mail for over 1 HOUR, then instructed to leave my phone number to have them call me back=NEVER did. Sent email=NO response. Will SADLY now request a return from Amazon on this product I first loved but now is a problem as well as a health risk. I will also buy a juicer with a warranty LONGER than just ONE year. I tried to revise my 5 star rating but Amazon does NOT allow me to do this. I would drop it to 2 stars IF I knew it was not a serious health risk due to the hassle with NO customer service in my case. If I knew for sure it IS a serious health risk, I would drop it to NO stars. But then Amazon will not let me do this either.....

1/23/2009 UPDATE:

This juicer has been returned and I have now owned the new Omega 8006 for a few weeks. Did a FULL review at Epinions of it. What an amazing difference.

1 YEAR 2 week later update:

The Omega Model 8006 is still being used as well as a L Equip XL Wide Mouth Mini Juicer. Still lost over 50 pounds, STILL haven't had or even wanted a beer in over a year. And both of these models are easy to clean and trap no unhealthy food particulate in any crevices etc. Tried & true good solid juicers being used daily.

Mike

2 Year Update: Just sold the L Equip. Probably (well "maybe") going to sell our Omega Juicer as well. Been using a Vitamix 5200 the past few months also. I know it isn't "real" juicing since I also eat the entire product. But for quick & easy, saving 70% on the fruits & veggies, making soups etc? I just got lazy I guess? But to get an idea, go create my meal, clean up & be sitting at the table in 5 minutes? What would ANY lazy old goat like me do? Oh, and for what it's worth, it is now over 2 years without a single beer.....

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Update after almost 4 years.

Never sold this juicer. Even though out Vitamix is a daily workhorse there are still times we use this for juice with NO pulp. As rare as that is, we just find it indispensable for when the mood strikes....For serious juicers, I have found a website that offers the BEST info anywhere. Even though I buy from Amazon (on a daily basis for ALL my needs) I get my best guidance on the latest products from

John Kohler who owns that company also has a Youtube site and recently showed an all new Omega Blender he feels will be a Vitamix killer? Well maybe not.... Hope all this has helped. Vitamix just announced yet an all new model that will not require hearing protection like my 5200 does too. And the beat goes on!

This was the best appliance purchase I have ever made! This juicer is very sharp looking. Looks great in any kitchen. It is compact but kinda tall. The best part is it's ability to juice in a second. Very powerful motor. It fact probably more powerful than I needed but it doesnt hurt to have the best. I bought this juicer so I can make fresh juice for my toddlers, myself and husband every day. Now my girls get fresh apple, pear, carrot, grape and strawberry juice. I absolutely love cucumber and apple juice. Cucumber juice is so refreshing and I could drink a ton a day. My husband loves the bloody mary juice. A tomato, celery and onion and then a dash of hot sauce. We can get 4 times as much fruits and veggies in a day by juicing then by eating alone. I dont want to sit around and eat 8 carrots or celery sticks but I can easily drink that in a day. I cant stand eating melons but I drink them with an apple in this juicer. I dont even have to chop up most of my veggies and fruit. The entry hole is so big, an apple, cucumber, tomato etc. fits great. As long as you buy your fruit organic you can dont have to peel most of your fruits and veggies. Get a good juicing book and it will tell you what fruits and veggies you can juice whole. The ultimate is the easy clean up with this juicer. It tastes less than a minute to clean the entire thing. Yes, the pieces are plastic, except for the base of the motor, but can you imagine how heavy this thing would be if it were glass?? And I have dropped it a few times in the sink and I would have broken the pieces if it were glass. I am now going to start a composting bin for all the scraps from my juicer. That is one of the benefits of juicing too. You can use the leftovers for compost or depending on the fruit or veggie can use for a loaf or bread. Like carrot, apple or zuccini pulp can be used to bake tasty loafs. I am just an average Mom who bought this juicer. For all the other Moms out there.........buy this!
