Victorinox 125th Anniversary Limited Edition 7-Inch Santoku Knife with Granton Edge

Victorinox 125th Anniversary Limited Edition 7-Inch Santoku Knife with Granton EdgeI bought this knife instead of the other Victorinox 7" granton-edge santoku knife (Victorinox Cutlery 7-Inch Granton Edge Santoku Knife, Black Fibrox Handle) because this one is advertised in the Amazon product description as being a forged knife, and it's not (Same with the 8" chef's advertised as 125th anniversarybuy the regular one!). The linked knife is the exact same (except for the special-edition "jubilee etching" on this one) knife, but a couple bucks cheaper right now. Go by the description of the other knife and buy whichever one is cheaper. It is an awesome knife though! It is a bit light (which as a girl with small hands, I prefer) but feels very balanced, the blade is very straight and high-quality. Super sharp right out of the packaging. Some people complain about that the fibrox handles look or feel cheap, of course they're not the most expensive looking but they don't look cheap to me. I have seen and felt much lower quality handles as well as more expensive, high quality handles and I have no problem with fibrox, I like it a lot actually. So the only reason I gave this knife 4 instead of 5 stars is for the misleading product description, which thinking back is probably my fault for not realizing right away that Victorinox wouldn't put the fibrox handle on a forged knife, but oh well, they were the same price when I bought it so I didn't lose anything.

I have a lot of experience as a cook, mostly as at home but also time spent in the restaurant kitchen. When my church decided to remodel and restock its kitchen, I was asked to made the recommendations on specific brands (of small appliances, cookware, knives) to buy. I relied on a bunch of reviews, including those in Cooks Illustrated and Consumer Reports, and bought a handful of highly-rated knives to test. The Victorinox was the winner, hands down. Here's why:

-exceedingly comfortable handle, slightly indented to accommodate your finger tips, usable by all three testers (a member of the church's youth group, a petite woman and a 6' guy).

-exceedingly light weight and good balance. Some of the knives were blade-heavy, hard to control and tiring for the occasional-cook to use. Some felt wretchedly uncomfortable in your hand. The Victorinox was feather light and easy to manage.

-exceedingly sharp blade that worked well on a variety of cutting tasks.

-a ridiculously low price. Some of the finalist knives were over $100 a piece. Victorinox was doing the same quality of work for a quarter (in some cases less) of the price.

We ended up buying several Victorinox models -serrated slicer, santoku, small chef's -and have been very pleased with each.

This is sharp from mfg. We use this brand comercially, have knives 3x more expensive, not better. Doesn't hold edge as long as very best, but I don't feel guilty hitting it w/ a steel.

This Knife absolutely blew me away. Given the price and the fact that it had a handle that was made out of a material that I was unfamiliar with...well lets just say I wasn't sure what to expect. Dont get me wrong I knew it would be nice as it was from Victorinox and they know knives. With that being said I had absolutely no clue just how nice these knives really are. To say I was pleasantly surprised would be a massive understatement.

First and foremost I absolutely love the handle. The patented Fibrox material really is outstanding. Its a bit lighter than what I am used to but that doesn't take anything away from this knife or the handle. It simply took a little getting used to. The best way I can describe the fibrox material is to say that its like a soft sandpaper. It basically has a gritty/soft texture that makes gripping the knife extremely comfortable. There is just no chance of your hand slipping even if your hand is wet or covered with oil. The more I used it the more I came to prefer the Firbox handle and its to the point now where its my handle of choice. Its just an outstanding material that is absolutely perfect for knives.

The other thing I was concerned about was the knifes edge. I have purchased knives in this price range before and the biggest problem I ran into was the knife just couldn't hold an edge very long at all. Well this is just another aspect of this knife that blew me away. Not only was this knife sharp as a razor out of the box, it retained its edge for a very long time, In fact this knife could stand toe to toe with some knives that are 2-3 times this price. Its really quite amazing. It was also extremely easy to sharpen it right back to its original sharpness.

Overall the knife has an outstanding feel to it. Again its a bit lighter than what I was used to but again that isn't a bad thing. I grew accustomed to it very quickly and the weight is certainly not a detriment to the knives overall performance. Its important to note that when I say light, I don't mean light as in cheap feeling. It doesn't feel cheap, in fact quite the contrary.

Bottom line This knife really blew me away. It could easily stand toe to toe with knives that are 2-3 times its price. Given its price I really cannot give this knife a higher recommendation. Victorinox has really created an outstanding knife at an AMAZING price.

5 stars and then some!!

This Santoku was quite a nice knife. The fibrox handle ensures a good grip even when dealing with a lot of meats or liquids. The blade stayed honed for quite a few days of uses, but it should be honed on a steel weekly at the very least. I did think the knife to be a little bit too light though, and I'm not so sure the grantons did anything to prevent food from sticking to the blade.

Mundial 5100 Series 7" Hollow-Edge Santoku Knife, Red

Mundial 5100 Series 7' Hollow-Edge Santoku Knife, RedI've used some of the finest knives made, and this one is right up there with the best, but at a more reasonable price than many. The blade is NOT too thick don't know what that's about. I am a female with smallish hands and I find it absolutely balanced and easy to work with. And a knife is SUPPOSED to be as sharp as possible dull knives are the most dangerous! I just love it and use it every day, in fact bought a whole set just based on how pleasing this one is to use, not to mention to look at! BIG RAVES!!

Perfect size, weight and for a lot less money than other good knives.

The top edge of the blade is too thick, so you often need two hands to slice things. The cutting edge sharpness seems fine, but it's too heavy and the balance is not quite right (blade heavy). After using the Mac knife, I'm spoiled. Spend the extra money (not much!) and get the Mac knife which is a top quality knife and the best value on the market right now. It's in a different league.

kitchenAid 2 Piece Fruit & Vegetable Knive Set Forged Stainless Steel

kitchenAid 2 Piece Fruit & Vegetable Knive Set Forged Stainless SteelI took my knife like the microserrated one in this set to my daughters at Christmas. She doesn't own nor appreciate the value of a sharp knife, making cooking in her kitchen difficult. I accidentally left it there. After she had used it there was no chance of me getting it back. I looked for a replacement for a couple of months before finding one on Amazon. The smooth-edged knife came along with it and is

advertised as being designed to hold its edge longer. We shall see. It is not why I purchased this set. The micro serrated one is the go-to knife in my kitchen. Even though it is described as a fruit and vegetable knife I have found it much more versatile. I do own a variety of Henckles knives yet I still reach for this knife. Recommendation: handle with care. It looks harmless but is not.

Silver 3 Candlestick

Silver 3 CandlestickI bought this Challah Board from The Judaica Store. Upon receiving the item, the salt receptacle was unattached from the board, while it was supposed to be glued to the board. This is not very good craftsmanship. The knife, too, broke after a mere few weeks of normal use. The blade partially unattached from the handle. I contacted The Judaica Store and they told me to return the item for a replacement. That incurs added expense on my part, because it would mean I would have to pay for shipping the item to the retailer, AND the shipping of the item back to me. I'm not a satisfied customer. Two stars for the quality of the board, as well as the quality of the retailer.

Terracotta Garlic Keeper - Store Garlic / Shallots

Terracotta Garlic Keeper - Store Garlic / ShallotsI bought this garlic keeper to finally have a home for that head of garlic. Although this garlic keeper does seem to keep it fresh longer, it is really only for small, very small heads of garlic and I find myself unable to use it because the garlic I buy tends to be the size of a small fist and the opening for this keep is only about 2.5 inches. So if you need a keeper for small heads of garlic, this will work, otherwise go for a larger one.

I had a terra cotta garlic keeper that got broken. This one looked just like it, so I was happy to order it. When it arrived, however, it was MUCH SMALLER than I expected, and I can only keep two heads of garlic in it at a time. I could keep four or five heads in my old one. It will do its job just fine, but it is smaller than the picture suggests.

With a change of life style diet comes many surprises, including using fresh rather than powdered or ground garlic. But how to store it, keep it fresh, and ready for immediate use??? I did a bit of research and found the BEST way to store garlic was in a 'pot' a Terracotta pot. (To the uninitiated, that is a simple clay pot which has not been glazed or sealed.)

I looked at a dozen different storage pots then found this little gem. It is 100% teracotta; attractive; small enough to set on a shelf over the sink; and, big enough to hold TWO BULBS of garlic. Its best feature is IT WORKS, and very well. I have used one bulb, and added another both are still store fresh.

This item has my highest recommendation.

Was fairly disappointed when I received this and found out that it can only hold 1-3 cloves of garlic. For someone who goes through a ridiculous amount of garlic, this doesn't cut it. For normal people, it may suffice.

MISONO BONING KNIFE - 5.9 INCH

MISONO BONING KNIFE - 5.9 INCHThe knife has an oustanding blade, the 80/20 angle is sharp right out of the box.my poblem was the handle, mine wasn't set or cut perfectly.the metal was taller than the wood in some places creating an entrance for bacteria and it just didn't sit perfectly in my hand due to uneven build.

Unless you are a picky chef this wouldn't be an issue.

Gibson Mr Coffee Crafton 1.8-Liter Whistling Tea Kettle

Gibson Mr Coffee Crafton 1.8-Liter Whistling Tea KettleThe best tea kettle I've ever had! I read all the different reviews for all the different Brands of stainless tea kettles & decided to take a chance on this one. I use it several times a day, EVERY day so far, no rust! I love the seamless shape (no fused bottom to worry about leaks or other problems). The stainless lid fits nice & tight (no worry about popping off when tilting the kettle to pour) & fully removes for a nice wide opening for cleaning. The shape is clean & timeless. The whistle is loud enough to be heard in another part of the house. The handle is super comfortable, with a well-placed, easy-open mechanism for large or small or arthritic hands. It may get a little warm to the touch when the water boils, but certainly NOT hot or uncomfortable no potholder needed! My only negative comment is that my kettle arrived without any paperwork no shipping or return info from Amazon & no brochure or paperwork with care or warranty info from the manufacturer. After notifying both, I'm still without that info. But I DO love this kettle!

I bought this tea kettle elsewhere but I wanted to share my experience. I used this kettle daily. Steam came out of the spout and at the water lid (I couldn't get it too tight or I'd never get it off) thereby decreasing the power of the whistle, which ended up close to non-existent. The bottom had begun to rust inside and so I had 'floaters' that had nothing to do with my tea. I only had it for a couple of months so kudos to the Chinese manufacturers that have put together another fine product. It's in the garbage and I'm shopping for another kettle.

I bought this for my daughter for Christmas. She called me to let me know that the tea kettle did whistle and she was very pleased.

J.A. Henckels International Fine Edge Synergy 13-Piece Knife Block Set

J.A. Henckels International Fine Edge Synergy 13-Piece Knife Block SetThis was a gift from our wedding registry. And I did read the less than impressive reviews of the set and yet decided to go with it 1) because of the price, (2) these received the relatively better reviews for a Henckels set (3) one-piece stamped steel construction. My husband was in the restaurant suply business for 7 years, and he is no fan of the Henckels International line but I succumbed to the draw of the little man (in the co. logo) without whom, I believe for the moment, no kitchen is complete. Since we received them, even my skeptical husband has gotten fond of them. They are not 'cheap looking', 'prone to rusting' (with proper knife handling, of course), 'thin blade'd, as some have opined here. We don't have a grand chef's kitchen operation running at our house and for us, these are great. With low to moderate use, regular hand cleaning and wiping down, they are still like new. They feel just right in terms of weight and look great. We have an extra pair of henckels kitchen shears that we were able to put in the block that had a compartment for it.

UPDATE: Nov 26, 2012: Just wanted to report back that our knives are still going strong. No rust. No dullness that the (included) sharpening steel doesn't address.

I was looking for a set of good quality knives as I am upgrading my kitchen equipment and I ran across these in Dillards Dept store. The knives were on sale so I was not sure about them. I was familiar with the brand but didn't know much. I purchased them and they are wonderful! The Chef's knife won't disappoint and I was upset that I had not gotten a set of good knives before it would make my cooking life so much easier. The knives look pretty too with my stainless steel. They are attractive. The blades are so sharp and the steak knives cut steak like it's butter. I recommend them to anyone looking for a nice set of cutlery.

I love these new knives. However, even though it says *Dishwasher safe--don't do it. Take really good care of these knives and they will last a life time. The chef's knife cuts through a lemon like butter...you will really like them.

Read Best Reviews of J.A. Henckels International Fine Edge Synergy 13-Piece Knife Block Set Here

First off before you go off and buy this knife set you have to realize this is the cheap version of the J.A. Henckels....hence the International. Although Amazon description says High Grade German Steel it is not. These knifes are made in China.

Some reviews here people complain of rusting ect. Now these knifes might indeed rust, but some care must be taken with them. I have had mine over 1 year now, and they have held up perfectly. I cant complain. I have taken good care of my knifes. They dont go in the dish washer, they dont stay wet very long soaking in the sink. I use them, wash and dry them and keep them sharp. The are still a very sharp

I have used and held the high end Henckels and these are a far cry from them...but so is the price. You will pay $300 or more. Twin Cuisine is a very very nice set, feels heavy and solid. The Fine edge synergy are light and thin, almost feel like they might break. Not a knife you want to take with you to a knife fight. However for the price they cant be beat. If your looking for Henckles high quality knifes go spend the extra money and dont get the International version. If your looking for a cheap good knife set that will last a long time with extra care, you cant go wrong with this set.

I dont regret ever buying this set however next time I will get a set like the Twin Cuisine's.

This is my first brand-name knife set purchase. The knives are all very sharp, the grip is comfortable, and the whole set appears to be of good build quality, so I expect it to last for a while. For less than $50, it is a good buy.

Wusthof Gourmet 5-1/2-Inch Tomato Knife

Wusthof Gourmet 5-1/2-Inch Tomato KnifeI recently found a replacement on Amazon.com for my 10 yr old overused and often re-sharpened Wusthof Gourmet tomato knife. I was amazed at the low price of $29 when this knife in retail stores has been on sale for $55 or $60. Now I know why. The blade itself is the same as the original blade, but the handle is just a groved piece of plastic or composite with rivets holding the flat blade in place-the same a any other cheap knife found at discount stores. I think I bought a $29 knife for $29not the great deal I thought it was and it doesn't exactly match the handles of my "Classic" Wusthhof knife set. But I'm certainly not sending it back. It works really well, just like the original one-just a little more cheaply made.

I know it seems excessive to buy an entire knife just for tomatoes ... but it's gotten to the point where I buy tomatoes JUST to be able to use this knife I love it so much. It slices through the fruit's skin as effortlessly as through softened butter, while other knives (even my other razor sharp Wusthof ones) just bruise and squish the fruit. Definitely worth the cost. I just bought a second one as a gift!

Buy Wusthof Gourmet 5-1/2-Inch Tomato Knife Now

Have had this knife for a while now and have to say that for slicing tomatoes and other veggies like cukes etc this knife cannot be beat. It is the right knife for that task. You can slice a tomato paper thin to beefstake thick and the slices are perfect and clean everytime! The only negative comment I have is that the handle (as on all newer gourmet series knives from Wusthof) seems to be more light-weight and somewhat cheaper. Not that this ruins the performance of the knife...it is more an esthetic / ergonomic thing. Thus four stars instead of five. I hand wash all of my good knives so it will never see the dishwasher so i doubt the handle will ever become an issue.

Bought this for my daughter, she loves it. Easy to handle, excellent for slicing tomatoes.

A1 quality! Anybody who wants a gourmet tomato slicer, this is the one.

Want Wusthof Gourmet 5-1/2-Inch Tomato Knife Discount?

This knife allows you to thinly slice delicate fruits and vegetables without tearing. I can achieve a near paper thin slice of tomato with it, which makes this worth every penny to me.

This is a high-end home or semi-pro grade knife. It's stamped instead of forged, which cut some of the costs between this and the high end Classic series. For me that is not a problem due to the nature of the knife. Had I been in the market for a chef's knife I would have spent the extra money and purchased a forged knife. I will say that this one holds a razor sharp edge as well as some forged knives that I own.

It is also missing the bolster that forged knives have, so it does not have the balance of a high-end knife, but for what it was designed to do that is not necessary. It's light, easy to use and the handle provides a nice, no slip gripping surface.

I love the way this knife holds its edge. Some of that is due to the serrated blade, but it's also because the quality of the steel used for the blade is the same quality that the forged models use. In fact I need to insert a caution: you need to be careful when using and cleaning this knife because the blade is extremely sharp. Make sure you store this in a block or roll too because this is not a knife you want loose in a drawer it can inflict a nasty cut if you accidentally grab it by the wrong end while rummaging through a drawer.

One final note: this, like all serrated blade knives, is designed to be used in a pulling motion in order to obtain the thin slices as well as safety when you are holding a tomato while cutting. The reason I mention this is because I've had guests who have assisted me in cooking use this knife with a pushing motion and it does not perform nearly as well.

This is a quality knife that should last a lifetime if you properly care for it. On the stamped vs. forged issue, I personally do not think there is a difference when it comes to some specialty knives like this one.

This knife is really low quality they sell for about $5 in Japan and that really shows in the workmanship.

It's blade is very dull out of the box and too light for any practical use. The best part about this knife may well be it's real-wood handle!

Unfortunately I can't recommend anything in this price range, you will have to spend at least twice as much at a local Japanese store or here:

Calphalon Contemporary 5-Inch Santoku Knife

Calphalon Contemporary 5-Inch Santoku KnifeI wanted to get a santoku, but I am somewhat of an amateur in the kitchen. My boyfriend (an expert cook) has the 7 and 8 inch santoku from Henkels in his knife set, which I thought were way too big for me. I am really happy with this 5 inch. You can cut everything from vegetables to meat with it. He thought the knife would be too small for him, but he loves to use it when he comes over to cook. Its crazy sharp and the slightly rounded edge rocks it really nice over vegetables and pretty much everything else. I love this knife!

Don't get me wrong, this knife isn't all that bad, but it's not all that great either.

If you are looking for a smaller Santoku for a decent price then you might want to check this out, but I ended up taking this one back. I'm the kind of guy that really only uses a couple knifes in the kitchen. I find that the Santoku satisfies just about every need, so I felt buying a set of 15 knives would be a waste of money, as I would only use a couple of them. With that in mind I went to go buy this Calphalon santoku.

First I realized that this knife was too small for me (but this isn't taken into account in this review, that was my own fault). I then proceeded to make a few cuts with this knife to test it out. I grabbed a grapefruit and decided to see how small I could slice it up. The first couple of cuts were beautiful, but I quickly realized that it started to dull out on my as I got towards the end of the grapefruit. I used my sharpening steel to re-align the blade and everything seemed okay again (but you shouldn't need to do that after a single grapefruit!)

I also noticed that this knife stains pretty bad. There are (were) pretty ugly stains on the blade after a single use. I tried washing it (by hand of coarse) and the stains did not go away. The stains looked a lot like finger prints.

I have heard a lot of good things about Calphalon so it's possible that the knife I got was a bad one. I didn't take this chance again, instead I got the Henckels Four Star 7in Santoku. It may be twice the price of the Calphalon, but if you find that you only need a couple knives I believe you should probably get the best knives your wallet will allow. The Henckels Four Star are absolutely amazing by the way!... but that's a different review.

Sasaki Drama 45-Piece Flatware Set, Service for 8

Sasaki Drama 45-Piece Flatware Set, Service for 8I was looking for a modern contemporary flatware set that was affordable and yet stayed true to its modern/contemporary feel. This set is beautiful! I took a bit of a risk since I could not find reviews anywhere about this particular product. I have seen other Sasaki sets prior and it was all based on the consumer style preference. The handle is a brushed stainless steal finish and the top is a polished finish. They are a good weight, not too heavy. They have a somewhat thin handle, but not flimy.

Also, if you are looking for the modern/contemporary sleek look you will definitely find it with this set but keep in mind that they are actually quite large pieces. I would probably use the salad fork for everyday use and not the dinner fork. The serving set included with the flatware set is also just as stunning.

The set is dramatic looking, but horrible to use. The spoons are actually as deep as they look and do not fit your mouth well. They are shaped more like measuring spoons. I considered returning them, but will just donate them to charity instead.

Mcgowan Diamondstone 2-Stage Knife Sharpener

Mcgowan Diamondstone 2-Stage Knife SharpenerAt first this item would seem to be an ideal product. I own both models. I picked up the diamond model because the diamond grit promised a surface that would surely handle the tougher steels. And it did. But then comes the reason I would not recommend this particular tool. The company, apparently to save a dime in production and make a dollar in sales, opted to only put one stone on both sides of the white ceramic hone. Since the tool was designed to fit two stones one gets chatter when honing. Might not seem like much of a problem but when one is trying to get the ultimate edge this drives me nuts. The cheaper model works great for a quick sharpening of kitchen knives that have lost a bit of edge.

This is the best knife sharpener I have ever used, and that includes electric sharpeners. The large handel gives stability and safety while the wheels form an ever changing abrasive surface. This is the second of these sharpeners that I have purchased.

They are quite a bit baggier than I had anticipated, but being cargo pants this is not unusual. The waist is elastic with a drawstring so fit was always excellent despite never being tied. All the pockets and seams are holding up well despite occasionally being caught on various kitchen obstacles that I was sure would have caused a tear. I definitely recommend these pants to someone looking for a relatively inexpensive, quality pair that will hold up well.

Rada Cutlery Turnover, Made in USA

Rada Cutlery Turnover, Made in USA, Aluminum HandleI own just about all the Rada knives that I need, so I was thrilled when the company began producing other useful items. I've had the same spatulas since I was married 34 years ago and was in dire need to something newer and better. This rada turnover fits the bill it's sturdy and has a nice short handle which makes it very easy to manipulate.

As with other Rada products, you don't want to let this sit in water or wash it in the dishwasher if you are put off by discoloration. The aluminum handles don't keep their nice matte appearance if you don't hand wash and then dry these immediately.

Review after 4 months of purchase (and abuse)

The metal is flexible and durable, and is used primarily for turning larger items on the cast iron cooktop (burgers, fish fillets). It can do a quick chop to break up meat for browning or shovel in the diced onions. It has become my second favorite utensil in my kitchen (next to my equally diverse kitchen knife). The handle has a little texture for gripping and the resin grips the metal securely with none of that worrying jiggle that can happen in more cheaply made products. Washes clean in the dishwasher without any fuss.

I can see purchasing more matching Rada products for my kitchen.

I've been searching for a stainless spatula/egg turner with a short handle for quite awhile. I am very happy with this one. A friend gave me a Rada tomato knife for Christmas and that led to me searching for other Rada utensils. I now have several and am so pleased with their quality and that they are American made.
