Wallace Grande Baroque 4-Piece Place Setting, Service for 1

Wallace Grande Baroque 4-Piece Place Setting, Service for 1The setting I received is nearly 70 years old but look about perfect! Very lovely and ornate (seems more so in person). They even included a tarnish resistant cloth to protect them. Awesome.

I will have to figure out how to get tarnish out of the nooks and crannies though... maybe with polish and a toothbrush?

EDIT: I've been advised in the comments that a toothbrush is a bad idea for silver, so I don't know how to get these as clean as I want them but I retract my toothbrush suggestion in case it leads to any damaged silver.

Yamazaki Haiku 5-Piece Place Setting

Yamazaki Haiku 5-Piece Place SettingI have been trying various Yamazaki and other brands of flatware, and this is my favorite. I love the rounded shape of the spoons, particularly how they contrast with the lines of the handles and the tines of the forks. I love their heft and size in my hands, it is just fun and a pure pleasure to eat with these pieces of flatware.

So far, they do great in the dishwasher. I highly recommend them.

Maxam? Apple Peeler/Corer/Slicer with Suction Base

Maxam? Apple Peeler/Corer/Slicer with Suction BaseI bought 7 already and may buy more in the future. I give them as gifts. Mostly when I give one to someone I get a funny look and then a few days later I get a call telling me they love it and want to know were I got it.

The slicer and peeler on this product works as good as others I have used. The only fault I have found is the suction up on the bottom. If placed just right on my counter it will hold but only through about 2-3 apples at best. Then I have to resuction it down because it looses its grip.

The product was as described and did what it is supposed to do. Some coaxing is required with some apples as they tend to spin off center.

It works fine IF you have a super slick surface to attach it to and wet the rubber pad. There is a clip on the opposite end of the crank that won't stay on, so I have to make sure it's reassembled before each use.

I received this slicer today. I am so happy to receive it and want to slice an apple. But three screws fell out from the plastic basement. Additionally, the main part cannot be stable above the base and began to rotating. I even do not have a chance to slice an apple, it will be returned. I can not understand the quality of this item. Maybe I am just the unlucky guy with a broken one. Please take care of your item.

Swiss Army Brands 40603 Paring Knife, 3-1/4-Inch

Swiss Army Brands 40603 Paring Knife, 3-1/4-InchThese knives hold a edge seems like forever. This is a new order for gifts. Still using myself some I bought 5 years ago.

After damaging an identical knife by attempting to use it outside of the kitchen environment, I knew I had to get a replacement right away. This is my wife's favorite knife works fantastic on steak, fruit, etc. She bought the set at a fairly expensive price so I was prepared to pay through the nose for a replacement. Not so! This was very reasonably priced and arrived quick. No complaints here. I'll probably buy a couple more ... just in case.

This is the best paring knife I have ever used. I bought one 4 years ago from a restaurant supply and it is still just as sharp now. I was very glad to find them on Amazon. I bought some for family and friends too.

I bought these knives to use while crab fishing. They are so sharp that I can cut solidly frozen bait in 3 -4 strokes, bone and all. I've never had a sharper knife. They're inexpensive enough that when they get dull, I just toss them. Great knives for the price.

My brother got me this as a gift a few years ago and my husband and I are constantly grabbing for it at the same time, so when my mother-in-law requested one for Christmas, I ordered a couple of extra for the house. The blade is really sharp, the handle is nicely formed, and the red color makes it easy to find in a crowded utensil drawer if you're not using the plastic sleeve that it ships in. Love this knife.

Sasaki Axis 45-Piece Flatware Set, Service for 8

Sasaki Axis 45-Piece Flatware Set, Service for 8We have the Sasaki (/ Mikasa) Double Helix pattern and needed more spoons. Apparently Double Helix is out of production or has limited availability, so I ordered these as they look similar (and they were selling for less than their current price -about eighty-to-eighty-five bucks when I got them).

They're okay for our purposes, but they are significantly lower quality than the Double Helix pattern. For one thing, they are flatter and feel like stamped metal rather than forged. For another, the brand and pattern are printed (!) on the back of the business end of each utensil, rather than engraved in the back of the handle (yes, I thought it was a sticker and tried to peel it off, but apparently that's not the case).

The design is reasonably good, although the forks are a bit pedestrian (one thing I really like about the Double Helix patter is the three-tine fork, rather than the standard four-tine).

All-in-all, it was a relatively inexpensive way to pick up 16 extra spoons for all the tea making and cat feeding that goes on around the house (and it's a great price for a full set of eight place settings), but it wouldn't be my choice for day-to-day flatware.

Ginkgo Sea Drift Hollow Handle 20-Piece Stainless Steel Flatware Set, Service for 4

Ginkgo Sea Drift Hollow Handle 20-Piece Stainless Steel Flatware Set, Service for 4I can't comment on the longevity of this flatware...but seeing it up close I can hardly imagine it ever breaking down unless put in the path of a bulldozer ... maybe. It is very sturdy. For me this is the perfect flatware for everyday use. Yeah, it's certainly nice enough for people who want it for more formal use, but perfect for everyday use. I don't think any abuse could damage the integrity of this flatware. It's the Iron Man of flatware, especially at the price I paid ($70).

Let me try to describe it for informational purposes. It's glossy, shiny...that type of finish...all over and very evenly formed and shaped. The pieces seem to kind of curve around your palm whichever way you hold them because of the curve of the handle...and the heaviness is very noticeable. The dinner knife is not serrated with those rasp-like teeth on its edge like some flatware. It has a sharp (but not too sharp) smooth edge that I really like much better. Yes, it will cut meat but is not sharp like a steak knife. It's not easy to describe. The knife says "korea" on the blade and the other pieces say "Gingko/Helmick" w/ "stainless 18/10" under that and "korea" under that on the bottom of the forks and spoons where the working ends meet the handles-in black...possibly laser applied...small lettering. There is no lettering on the handles...probably because they are so rounded. Very nice application, IMO, but if you don't like it there I have no idea if it wears off or could be taken off. It's small, black and just looks like it's printed there.

I remember as a young kid seeing and hefting flatware like this at semi-expensive restaurants my parents took me to and liking the feel of really heavy forks, spoons, etc. These remind me of those that I really liked at the time.

I don't imagine seeing anything close to this price range w/ the looks and durability apparent in this set (I bought two) of flatware. I am giving the 40 pieces to one of my married kids at Thanksgiving and I believe it will last at least until they are Grandparents...and may even be passed down to their kids. I recommend it highly, particularly if one likes heavyweight flatware that's seamless and solid. This is VERY solid.

Victorinox Universal Attache Case

Victorinox Universal Attache Case
  • Multi-purpose
  • Hard shell with locking feature
  • Unique tray system holds a minimum of 10 knives, any shape, style or size
  • Additional storage in base

I've used this Victorinox case for about five years now in a few different pro kitchens. It's not perfect; the plastic is a little soft and prone to staining. The tray has clips for ten knives and lifts out to reveal storage space underneath. The knives are held very securely. One minor drawback is that they do scratch the blades a little bit but I don't really carethey're work knives, not block queens. I can fit a 300mm sujihiki in the top couple slots but that's about the longest blade it will accommodate. In the bottom I keep a first aid kit, my glass Hand American honing rod, an 8" ceramic rod a cut glove and some tools (block knife, measuring spoons, etc). There's still room left over for a couple knives if I'm taking some home to sharpen.

I hate using sayas or blade guards and this case obviates the need to mess with them. I'd be willing to pay a premium for an aluminum version essentially the same but maybe an inch or so larger. Or a plastic case as nice as Pelican but designed exactly like this one.

While the case looks a bit cheap 'n' cheesy, overall I really like it. It may feel a bit lightweight but it's held up to the abuse of a pro kitchen just fine over the years. I've used many different rolls and so far I've never found anything I like any better.

Buy Victorinox Universal Attache Case Now

This is about the only hard case design I could find for knives that didn't include the whole knife set and wasn't per se a brief case that cost a fortune. I also like how it has the compartments for other things below the knives. The only thing that is off a little is how the tray comes off to expose the compartments underneath. That could be designed slightly better.

Read Best Reviews of Victorinox Universal Attache Case Here

This case is as advertised with plenty of space for knife storage, and the accessory compartments underneath the knife tray have plenty of storage space. My criticisms come in the form of the rigidity of the plastic used for the outer case itself. It seems very flexible and I am concerned about its' durability. Second, when the knife tray is full and the case is closed, the two exterior latches that are supposed to hold the case closed, do not maintain the lid closed and secured. They pop open after a few minutes leaving the lid ajar. It seems that the foam used on the inside of the lid to keep the knives from moving during transport, exert upward pressure on the lid, thus popping the latches open. I'm looking for small padlocks that will fit into the holes provided in the latches to keep the lid closed, but I'm thinking that will turn out to be a real hassle in the long run. If I find a better solution I'll update my review, but for now three stars is all I can give this case.

Want Victorinox Universal Attache Case Discount?

Really, this should have a 3.5 star rating, but I rounded up. The case is a fairly sturdy plastic and appears to be designed for kitchen knives. However, I needed something to store outdoors/hunting type knives in (Ka Bar style). This case kind of accomodates those knives, but you'll have to do some wiggling. Unfortunately, I was not having any luck finding a product specifically designed for these types of knives. The hilt gets in the way of the "clip in" style storage system. If you can't find any type of case specifically for your outdoor knives, this will get the job done for the most part. Bear in mind that a very large hilt will prevent storage of your knife in this case.

There is also a tray underneath the "clip in" storage system that is large enough to hold several sheaths, some pocket knives, a honing stone, and several 18" sharpening rods.

Overall, this is an acceptable way to store some outdoor knives, but I'll keep looking for something that is solely suited to that purpose.

Well, I do not own this yetttt but my head chef and restaurant owner has it along with another co-worker and the case seems to hold up to the use and also holds a lot within the base. I will further review it once I get it next week. (I bought it through a friend who works for Victorinox)

Kershaw 9950 Series 7-Inch Stainless-Steel Santoku Knife

Kershaw 9950 Series 7-Inch Stainless-Steel Santoku KnifeI have purchased this knife as an upgrade from a Farberware Pro Chef's Knife. Kershaw is a lot thinner, lighter, and infinitely sharper (buy some Band Aids). It has enough curve for a rocking low motion and long enough for high cutting technique. I love it.

P.S. Still love it after half a year, recommend dulling the blade corner near the pummel, it will reduce number of little cuts with out sacrificing usability.

Kershaw produces an excellent product at a reasonable price. This knife is just the right size for many uses. Love the feel in the hand and the rocking curve of the blade.

This is an excellent Santoku knife, but I thought it had the indentations on it to decrease sticking. Don't get this if you want the kind that easily goes through everything. This knife does chop well, and is excellently made except for the lack of indentations.

Preserve 24 Count on The Go Cutlery, Apple Green

Preserve 24 Count on The Go Cutlery, Apple GreenThis set is sturdy and reusable, I bought the dishes too for camping and eating outdoors by the pool area, I love that I can recycle them when they are worn out down the road (which probably won't be until years of use, because they show no signs of wear yet after 6 months). I've run them in the dishwasher but mostly hand washes them so far. And they are MADE IN THE USA yay!!!

Excellent. I found this to be well designed and made with great quality. It works exactly as I had hoped it would. I recommend it.

Unlike the previous reviewer, I have not used the knives. I use the spoons several times a day to scoop cat food from cans, and the forks a little less often. They have gone through the dishwasher dozens of times, and still look like new. The apple green color is very attractive.

I also love the fact that they are made from 100% recycled plastic, and are made in the USA. I would recommend these to anyone, and would also recommend that they take a look at the Preserve website for price comparison purposes.

Want Preserve 24 Count on The Go Cutlery, Apple Green Discount?

Prior to purchasing these I had been using a set of polycarbonate cutlery manufactured under the Coleman name. When Coleman stopped manufacturing them in the US I began looking for a replacement made in the US and Preserve was the brand I found. I have many Preserve products in my kitchen and liked all of them until now.

I make instant oatmeal in the microwave at work of mornings and would leave my Coleman spoon in the bowl while it was cooking without any problems. When I left the Preserve spoon in the hot oatmeal it came out very flexible and would bend back while I was trying to eat the oatmeal.

My biggest concern and the main reason I don't like these is the fork tines. They have rough edges and they are so close together you may end up with a cut lip or tongue if you are not careful. I was using the fork to eat a piece of cake and when I closed my mouth to pull the fork out and allow the cake to slide off my lip was pulled into the tines almost cutting it. I tried to continue using the fork to finish the piece of cake and ended up getting my tongue caught in the same way. I tried another fork in the pack and had the same problem. This has never happened with the Coleman cutlery or with disposable forks and spoons. I will not be using these or purchasing more.

Robinson Knife Oneida Colours Yellow Spatula

Robinson Knife Oneida Colours Yellow SpatulaI don't have this color, but own TWO Oneida spatulas! I bought my first one just because I was moving into my first apartment, loved to cook and needed a spatula. Previous experience left me with melted spatulas when I used then during cooking, and warped ones when I put them in the dishwasher. I use these for everything, from scaping bowls, to making scrambled eggs, to stiring my cream of wheat and oatmeal in my non-stick pots. The only complaint is that one of them has a small crack on the edge, but doesn't effect performance. I would recommend these to anyone who is looking for a multi-faceted utencil!!!

Mcgowan Firestone Electric Sharpener

Mcgowan Firestone Electric Sharpener, White/BlackThis will turn a butter knife into a steak knife in no time. The first sharpening may require many passes but touch ups are done in seconds. I gave everybody on my gift list one of these last Christmas.

We received the sharpener from the seller quicker than expected. The price was right and shipping was free. It works exactly as advertised and finally we have sharp knives in the house!

Buy Mcgowan Firestone Electric Sharpener Now

We have owned a Firestone Electric Knife Sharpener (essentially the same as shown) for about 15 years and still get razor sharpness from our knives. People, including my wife, are skeptical at first but become die-hard believers in this device very quickly.

Read Best Reviews of Mcgowan Firestone Electric Sharpener Here

This sharpener puts a great quick edge on knives. Some things to remember 1) Try just one pass first and see if that is good enough. This sharpener really sharpens quickly and one could oversharpen and remove too much metal very easily. 2) It leaves a slightly 'toothy' edge, which is better for a lot of actual cutting (tomatoes, bread, etc...), but this might be a turn off for some. 3) On point 2, one can turn off the machine and lightly use the stones for somewhat better edge or use a steel for a final edge.

I like this better than the Chef'sChoice models because they leave marks on the sides of the blades (yes, this doesn't hurt the function, but I'm just fussy). Better than the Worksharp Sharpener because the flexibility of the belts allow too much variation. The McGowan gives the closest to a factory edge I've found from an electric sharpener.

Want Mcgowan Firestone Electric Sharpener Discount?

The product works well. Simple to use and quick. Places a double hollow ground edge on the blade and does a decent job of sharpening the tips of knives. Only drawback is that it will remove a LOT of metal on initial sharpening. Once sharp, a quick couple of passes renews the edge. The edge appears to be rough and not the fine polished edge people usually associate with a sharp blade, but once sharpened, the knives cut extremely well. If the cosmetics of your blade are important, this device is probably not for you. I now warn my guests to be careful because my knives are very sharp and a couple of guests have asked how I keep them sharp. I have recommended this device to them. Two of them have already purchased the same device and are a pleased as I am.

Lifetime Cutlery Farberware Pro Forged Chef's Knife 8"

Lifetime Cutlery Farberware Pro Forged Chef's Knife 8'this knife has the similar feel, heft, and shape as the fancy German stuff but at something like 20% of the price!! OK ...

the finish is not super clean, but get one of the pricey knives and use it hard for a few years and it won't look perfect anymore either. the blade itself has a smoother radius for proper rocking motion than many of the more expensive knives. the blade is not highly polished, but i feel that is an advantage. i have used enough of the highly polished blades to know that many "wetter" vegetables (like zucchinis) tend to cling to the polished blades. they don't cling as much to the farberware blade. The blade also took a wonderful edge with just a few strokes of a ceramic sharpener and stayed sharper than its German brethren.

all in all, cost less, performs better than stuff costing 3X-5X as much. just not quite as pretty.

As the previous reviewer mentioned, it's not the most sophisticated knife, but it does keep an edge well (people are consistently amazed/frightened by how sharp this knife is), and it works extremely well in the kitchen (I'm constantly reaching for it, and even at home, with my Mom's more expensive knives, I wish I had it).

An excellent knife, and very functional.

It is in the German style, so the forged blade is thicker than the Japanese style. This makes is slightly more rigid, but also heavier.

At a price of under $11 this is a knife I will not be afraid to use.

Reasonably well balanced.

I always hand wash chef knives, and do use a cutting board. Holds an edge well.

Bottom line: built to work, not a "Name" brand, and a good deal.
