Wüsthof Classic 7-Inch Hollow Edge Santoku Knife

Wüsthof Classic 7-Inch Hollow Edge Santoku KnifeGreat for chopping. Perfect weight and well-balanced. Feels good in the hand. A joy to use. A go-to knife and a kitchen staple.

It's sharp! Cuts through stuff like butta'. In fact, I almost lost a nail using it (due to operator carelessness, not the knife's fault).

Wish I would have ordered one of these for chopping and slicing stuff (rather than relying so much on the chef's or pairing knives to cut stuff like veggies) sooner.

Now I see why this is considered a "must have" in any knife collection.

Victorinox Swiss Classic 10-Piece Cutlery Block Set

Victorinox Swiss Classic 10-Piece Cutlery Block SetWhat we like:

* These knives are much better quality than we expected.

* The blades are the proper thickness (not too thin), and the edge cuts well.

* The fibrox handles appear cheap at first, but are much better to hold than our wooden handled knives.

* The fibrox handles are very easy to clean.

What we don't like:

* No fancy wooden handles. Some may not like that.

* The slots one the knife block are not good. Knives flop around in them.

just one thing, I loved this set its so great and they cut like butter, will definitely buy it again!!!!!

Schrade SCHBBQ2 Bbq Kit Royal Red, Black, And White Canvas Case

Schrade SCHBBQ2 Bbq Kit Royal Red, Black, And White Canvas CaseI was really looking forward to getting this and upon receipt I noticed a piece was missing. I was disappointed mainly because I couldn't get a hold of anyone to let them know of the issue. Theb items that I did receive are great, would of liked to have received what I paid for.

This BBQ kit had a good case and a handle so it certainly does not take much room in storage. But because of the low quality of the tools, I am giving it a 4 star (considering the cheap price also). It might be good for 2~3 years of normal summer bbq needs, but if you are inviting guests I would suggest to use something else.

Wallace Continental Hammered 78-Piece Flatware Set

Wallace Continental Hammered 78-Piece Flatware SetI was disappointed when I received the flatware for two reasons. The pictures showed it with a dull finish on the handles which I wanted however, it is very shiny. The second reason is that it is very light weight and I was expecting it to be heavier. I was going to return it, but that seemed like a hassle so I am using it however, not really liking it.

I really liked the appearance of this product. The hammered steel look is very attractive and looks good on the table. However, the weight of the stainless is too light. It doesn't feel like a quality product in your hand. Maybe if you are younger and just starting out, you'd think it is fine. But if you are looking for a "good" stainless steel, you are likely to be disappointed. I returned it.

Buy Wallace Continental Hammered 78-Piece Flatware Set Now

This flatware is absolutely everything I expected it to be!!! Other reviews speak of it being too light, but I don't find that the case at all. It it beautifully crafted, nice weight, and really completes my table. The same exact collection, Wallace and all, is nearly $400.00 at Neiman Marcus, so to have this in my home for under $110.00 is a major steal !!!

The extra tablespoons are a bit unnecessary, but if I need them in a pinch, they're great. The sideboard serving pieces really complete this set as well.

I am just beyond thrilled with how perfect this set is. I looked at others on-line, in the home stores, Bed, Bath & Beyond, etc...nothing comes close to Wallace and the quality.

These were to replace something very similar to what I had in the past. The older set was inlaid with 18K Gold and were kind of heavy. This set was nice and had just the right weight to them.

The tablespoons are truly the size of serving spoons. But the set as a whole is fine.

Round End Grain Butcher Block

Catskill Craftsmen 14-Inch Round Slab with FeetWonderful! The height of it is perfect for our counters which are low to us (we're tall), so it makes it more ergonomic for us.

Yes, it's very heavy, but I don't see that as a negative. I was looking for a substantial one. I just bring my pans to the board to unload the food. I would not bother trying to carry the board across the kitchen. It doesn't move on your counter even remotely and it looks beautiful.

Make sure you season this board with mineral oil and paraffin before use so it doesn't absorb any odors or bacteria. Here's how I do it:

In a double broiler (or a bowl over a pot of boiling water), melt 10 tablespoons of mineral oil and about 3T of paraffin (comes in a block at the grocery store) until the paraffin is completely melted. Don't melt it directly over heat, as the paraffin has the potential of being flammable.

Immediately after you remove it from the heat, pour 1/2 on the cutting board and quickly--in the direction of the grain and in long strokes--rub it in with a lint-free cloth. I put 3 thin coats on mine and water beads like a freshly waxed car :). Let it stand overnight and buff with a soft cloth and you're good to go.

I tried doing strictly mineral oil and I ended up having to remove the feet, drill holes and attach the feet to the opposite side for use due to the odors that I couldn't get rid of on the side I was using. I would strongly suggest using paraffin; it's wonderful and won't hurt you.

I love this board! I coveted my father's for years before finally taking the plunge and buying my own. It is a great height, adding just the right amount for comfortable cutting. I did remove the feet and just put the small plastic counter savers back on. I found that inch made a world of difference (I am just 5'5").

In time, the cutting board starts to show cuts and nicks and slices in the wood. The more it is used, the more rustic and pleasing it is to the eye. I am so glad I bought this!

Recently moved out on my own and started to buy my own things for my apartment and soon realized that plastic cutting boards are not the best option. I decided to search on amazon and came across the Catskill 15.5 inch Round slab (Catskill Craftsmen Wood End Grain Round Cutting Slab with Feet) but I thought it was too big and pricey for me so I kept searching and I found this gem. Not only is it cheaper, it is only 1.5 inches smaller in diameter and only 1/4 inch smaller in the thickness so I purchased this based on the good reviews of the 15.5 inch slab. Same brand, same quality! The difference in size versus the amount of money saved is definitely a plus! Get this one!

I am really pleased with this cutting board. The feet really grabs onto the counter top and doesn't move while I'm chopping away; it's perfect for chopping up vegetables and what-not. It looks great in my kitchen, I leave it out on the counter top as if its a decorative piece haha. I followed the recommendation given by another reviewer on the 15.5 Catskill slab. I used the paraffin wax and mineral oil mixture to treat the board before use and will continue everyday for the first week, then once a month, and then whenever needed :)

Highly recommend this cutting board, I love it!

I had been looking for this kind of chopping block for over 3 years! It looks great in my new kitchen; it doesn't move around when my hands are full; it is a far cry from the flimsy chopping surfaces that seem to be everywhere. I would highly recommend this product. After thoroughly cleaning it after each usage, I keep it looking good with just a little mineral oil every once in a while. I have received so many compliments on it. The price was right and it came very quickly.

Kyocera Ceramic 4.5 Inch Utility Knife

Kyocera Revolution Series 4-1/4 Inch Utility Knife, Black BladeWhat a knife! I did not buy this particular knife from Amazon, but was an impulse buy at an asian market which had these at a competitive price.

The blade almost looks like a cheap plastic utensil, but don't let the looks deceive you. . . this knife is sharp! There was no sleeve in the packaging, and I got a nick on my finger handling the knife the very first time.

Also with the blade being so hard, you will need to be sure that the knife takes no hard shocks or flexes too much, or the ceramic may break. I would use a mat for cutting on a Granite(or Corian) countertop to avoid chipping the blade(or maybe cutting a groove in the stone!). There are places near the edge that look translucent and you can see the very fine lines along the blade from what I assume would be from the grinding process to finish the blade.

Cutting veggies and meat is very nice, but make sure you are using a hardwood board, or cutting mat, as this sucker leaves very fine grooves on supermarket cutting boards. If the knife were any heavier the cutting would do itself!

Already owning a well-rounded selection of Wusthof Classic knives, I didn't need a medium-sized slicer. Having received this knife as a gift, it was a nice introduction to Kyocera's ceramic knives. The edge quality of this knife (and I imagine the entire Kyocera line as well) is superb. If proper care is given, I can hardly imagine a better line of knives for the home cook (save for a boning and serrated bread knife). One concern I had was that the entire Revolution line has blunted (but edged..) tips, instead of pointed tips that nearly all other knives have. I needn't have worried. I used this rather large (for the task at hand) knife in place of my beloved Wusthof Classic trimming knife (#4002) to trim fat and sinew from a piece of flank steak while preparing fajitas and the rounded-yet-sharp-edged tip easily found it's way between fat, sinew, and the meat just as efficiently as my Wusthof. As Kyocera will tell you, ceramic blades are not for cutting around bone or jobs that may require twisting of the blade (such as boning), but for day-to-day slicing, they are very tough to beat. As I have 3 (going on 4 children) and perform 99% of the cooking in my household, I appreciate the time saved by not having to meticulously maintain the edge of steel knife after each use. For that reason, I have already acquired the 3" paring knife and will be purchasing the 7" chef's model in the near future.

I bought this knife for my mother as a Christmas gift. It cuts very well and has stayed as sharp as it was out of the box for almost a whole year now! Im very impressed with ceramic blades. Im pretty sure she only uses this knife and another ceramic Kyocera knife I got her. It makes cutting almost anything in the kitchen very easy. Hightly recommended!!!

Until recently, I used a fancy German stainless steel paring knife. It used to work OK but in the past few years, it refused to stay sharp. It was never sharp enough, even though I'd frequently use a sharpening steel on it. I even had it professionally sharpened, but it quickly got dull again. Because I used it often, this got frustrating (and dull knives are dangerous), so I looked for an alternative.

This Kyocera ceramic knife is amazingly sharp. It easily slices a tomato without having to poke the skin first (good thing, because the knife has a blunt tip). It even cuts through banana peels from the outside (I cut them up before composting). It lets me make thinner slices and handles well. The blade already has some minor staining (not a problem with stainless steel), and as others have pointed out, it's not to be used to smash garlic, but those are minor points. It cuts very well, and that's what a knife is for. Kudos, Kyocera!

Want Kyocera Ceramic 4.5 Inch Utility Knife Discount?

I thought a long time before buying one of these knives. I got this model, FK-110WH. It's a 4.25 inch long bladed general utility knife. I'm not sure that I'm the typical purchaser of this type of knife because I bought it for just one thing, to make SALSA.

We own a lot of very nice knives. 8 of them are Wusthof knives, two of them are Cutco and then this one. I bought each of them separately and for a specific use so I'm not with the reviewers who complain it's lack of versatility. That's fine with me as I have other knives for those things. It's true that there are some things you shouldn't use a ceramic knife for. If you're not OK with that, get something else.

My family loves salsa and I'm the go-to guy for that. I've been using an 4582/12 Wusthof knife. That's a 12 cm prep chef's knife. It's my favorite knife and I'd recommend it to anyone. It's plain and simple the best all around knife I've ever owned. But for slicing fruits and vegetables, this Kyocera ceramic is far and above it.

The first time I used it my mouth popped open. And remember, I'm not comparing it to cruddy knives. It may be specialized but if you do a lot of slicing, you should have this knife, or one like it in your block. Even when cutting along the edge of a slick tomato skin, this thing will go right through it rather than slipping of the side and cutting your finger. If you're worried about it being too sharp for you, don't. The sharper the knife, the safer it is. You want your knife to be so sharp that it cuts right through whatever you intend it cut. It's when the blade is dull that it tends to go off target and endanger your digits.

30 bucks. The cheapest knife I own but I'm sure I'll come back to it again and again. I probably wouldn't buy this type of knife (ceramic) in the "Chef's" style but to slice vegetables, everyone should have one.

It's so difficult buying a product like knives without being able to handle and hold them. That being said, I'm happy with these steak knives. They are attractive, have a nice heft when you're holding them, and cut well. They are a little larger than my current steak knives, and that took some getting used to. The serrated edges are deep and very sharp; I'd not recommend allowing children to use them. Overall very happy with them.

King 1000 Grit Whetstone with Plastic Base

King 1000 Grit Whetstone with Plastic BaseNo doubt the most used tool I carry with me daya to day is my pocket knife. A key issue with pocket knives is maintaining a finely honed edge. The Sushi Sashimi stone costs much less than other professional level sharpening stones, but performs equally well. It is rather portable, and seems to hold up well in field use. It is a wonderful alternative to +$60.00 competitors.

It has also returned the razor edge to all of my kitchen knives. Last night I sliced a roast into paper thin slices using an Old Hickory butcher knife. Great product!

I recently went to a knife skills class taught by Bob Kramer and of course had to go out and purchase whetstones and a 12 in ceramic hone like he had. I purchased this whetstone and a King 6000 Grit whetstone because I didn't think my knives were dull enough to require a 250 grit stone. Now that I have sharpened all of my knives, I think a 250 grit stone would be in order also.

Because I am very new to sharpening my own knives it is hard to review this whetstone too critically. However, I think it is a good stone for a good price which is why I purchased it and it has met my expectations. I am glad I purchased one with a base because it raises the stone off of the counter to more easily sharpen the knives. I didn' know when I bought it but the the stone is securely attached to the base.

I have used this stone exclusively on my kitchen knives which are mostly Shun and a few Henckels.

Buy King 1000 Grit Whetstone with Plastic Base Now

This is my first whetstone type sharpener. I have no idea how it stacks up against more expensive ones, but it works and the base does a good job of keeping it stationary. This is a 1000 grit stone, which sharpens (a 200-range stone is for blade repair, and the 4000-range stones are for polishing).

The whetstone is far better than the other types of sharpener I have tried. It only requires some basic physical coordination, and gives very good results with only a few minutes of work. There are many videos online that demonstrate good sharpening technique, and they did not guide me wrong.

Moreover, the process oddly satisfying. Anyway, whetstones can be used for any blade type: kitchen, utility, santoku, even an axe. This is the way to go for sharpening.

Read Best Reviews of King 1000 Grit Whetstone with Plastic Base Here

These King Stones are legitimate Japanese Water Stones made in, you guessed it, Japan. They are extremely versitile and are the highest quality stones I have used. However, there are a few more good companies out there. Water stones are true to the craft of knife honing and sharpening and is a useful skill to teach yourself. I highly recommend watching virtuovice (YouTube Name) on YouTube for excellent tutorials on how to sharpen with stones.

The lower grit stones like the 250 and 400 are great for taking out chips in the blades or reprofiling the edge to fit your needs or preferences. As a camper who beats on knifes and axes, I really need this benefit to take out those chips and these stones do so beautifully.

A good stone grit to breach the gab between the lower grits and the finishing stone is the 1000 grit. This will help smooth out the edge and give it some great sharpness. It also makes finishing the edge with a 3000 or 4000 grit stone an easier and less time-consuming step in the process. Finally, you should use a leather strop with a green and black compound to really get a good edge.

Bottom Line and Reccommending Sharpening System:

1.) 250/1000 grit King Water Stone

2.) 3000 or 4000 grit King Stone

3.) Leather strop with compound

You only really need the 250, 1000, and 3000 (or 4000) grit stones with the strop. I have seen the strop put a better edge than 8000 grit stones. Keep in mind a strop is only 30 bucks or so, and you could almost spend $100 on an 8000 grit stone. This reccommended sytem will make a butter knife scary sharp if you wanted it too. However, the stones are expensive and will loose shape over time depending on how much you use them. But the time you use them will definitely yield better results than a spyderco Sharpmaker (I have one). I also reccommend some sort of a stone holder like the Steelex Sharpening Stone Holder (If needed). This works well and makes it easier to work with.

Want King 1000 Grit Whetstone with Plastic Base Discount?

I have never sharpened a knife before it was always my husband's job. I got into making sushi and decided to learn. After some research I went with this whetstone. It is inexpensive and has good rating and feedback.

I was surprised to find it glued to it's base. After I started using it I realized this helps to keep stone in place.

I watched few videos on how to sharpen knifes and was able to get my dullest knife very sharp again just with this stone and sharpening steel. Not quite razor sharp but great for any slicing I do in kitchen.I guess you will need a finer grit stone to make your knife sharp enough to effortlessly slice paper.

Soak it it water first for about 20 minutes, put paper towel underneath to catch water,as paper towel dampens it will also keep plastic base from sliding around your countertop. It took me about ten minutes and more then few hundred strokes on each side to sharpen my very dull knife.

Moisten your stone with water often and do not lose patience.Watch few videos to help you figure out right angle between blade and stone I find that very important as well as consistency of strokes.By that I mean always sharpen your knife with similar strokes in same direction.

Wusthof Classic 10-Inch Spatula

Wusthof Classic 10-Inch SpatulaI am a cake finisher and have owned this spatula for 13 years. It is perfect. The length is comfortable and useful. The edge of the blade is perfectly crafted to grab and pull buttercream allowing for flawless strokes. I highly recommend investing in this tool if you are serious about cake decorating. Extra tipdon't use this blade to lift cakes, scoop buttercream and don't ever bang the blade on the side of a bowl to remove extra cream. These actions will damage your new best friend.

I iced Christmas cake with this like a dream. It also worked under the cake to remove it from the flat pan. A must for every kitchen.

Wusthof blade guard 8 cooks

Wusthof blade guard 8 cooksThis is how I use this guard: to cover my 8" Wusthof knife while I store it in a drawer. And it works just as advertised. I'm not a ninja who whips this out from underneath my kimono, and I'm not constantly putting the knife in and out of the guard. When it's time to make dinner, I open the drawer, take out the knife, use the knife, wash it, and then put it back. If this describes you, then this blade guard should work well. It covers the entire blade, it doesn't seem like it is going to fall apart any time soon, and it is sturdy enough to offer protection when I throw the slotted spoons on top of it.

I bought these hoping to keep my knives safe while traveling back and forth between work, as well as while sitting on the line while I am doing something else. They looked great when I bought them, and the lining made it appear as though they were of high quality. Within a week they all started splitting down the seam, meaning they no longer protected my knives or stayed on them. I have now gone back to the no name guards that secure to the blade tighter and are made of thicker plastic. They don't look as good, but I make a living with my knives and protecting the edge so I can make perfect cuts is really all that matters.

I tried Messermeister, Blade Saver, and Wusthof.

Wusthof is the best. The soft inner lining is gentle on the blade. It holds tight enough, but not too tight -it is easy to put it on/off a knife.

I have purchased six of these guards for various Wusthof blades and find that they are a nice fit, protective, and lightweight. I place the cutlery in the sleeves first, then place them in the pockets of my travel bag when I cook/prepare sushi away from home. These sleeves help protect my bag from punctures or cuts, as well as keep the knives protected. Overall, I am happy with the purchases.

Jamie Lynn Elegant Metal and Frosted Glass Vine Cake Knife and Server Set

Jamie Lynn Elegant Metal and Frosted Glass Vine Cake Knife and Server SetThe picture and reviews gave me high hopes for a decent product. The design looks elegant from far, but the quality is very poor. The blade of the knife and server seem like they are made of plastic and coated with metallic film. Both items have dull edges. The Frosted Glass in the product is not glued down properly, so it rattles when the product is used.

MIU France Serrated Steak Knives with Riveted Poly Handle, Set of 2

MIU France Serrated Steak Knives with Riveted Poly Handle, Set of 2I needed two new steak knives for my knife block since the set that I was gifted contained only six (and I had eight slots to fill). I searched Amazon (the best place to find obscure things in either large or small quantities) and found what appeared to be mostly matching knives from what I already had. I got these and upon first use I noticed that they were much higher quality than my other knives in the set and I now make it a point to have these set at my spot whenever we have company over. Great buy for a great price on Prime, I would definitely recommend them to any of my friends! (also if you found this review helpful, please give me a thumbs up -thanks:)

Calphalon Contemporary Cutlery 6-1/2-Inch Sandwich Knife

Calphalon Contemporary Cutlery 6-1/2-Inch Sandwich KnifeThis knife is amazing!!! it replaces a bread knife, a paring knife, and a Chef's knife... because it can do everything!!! I work at Bed Bath and Beyond and we don't carry this knife at the moment but i have been doing my very best to make sure we do, a Calphalon rep. gave me one of these knifes to try out, and i haven't been able to put it down since... On a regular basis i refer people to Calphalon's Website to check this thing out, for anyone who is fed up with trying to sharpen your serrated bread knife look no further, as it has no serrated edge but still cuts through bread, and even if you were to allow it to get dull, due to the wavy pattern of the blade it still slices through tomato(even squishy tomatoes) with ease. I really can't say enough... best design of a knife i've seen, hands down... who knew a sandwich knife was the missing tool of my kitchen... also well weighted, and solid in the hand as with most other large Calphalon Contemporary knifes... To whoever takes the plunge and buys this unique knife, you will be happily surprised... and did i mention it also cuts through sandwiches really well( as to be expected i guess).... i'll say it one last time, because it really is that good, amazing Knife!!!

Yes, it is a stupid review title, but I honestly was at a loss so forgive my lack of creativity. This is a great knife. It is well made and solid, and definitely has a use. It is not, however, the all-purpose instrument that others have indicated. It is very sharp, and unlike most serrated knives you could re-hone the edge of this because the edge is wavy with large scallops. However, this is a blade designed to chew through bread crusts and maybe some onion. Soft sliced white bread and too-juicy tomato will tear or crush, and toppings will be pulled out from between slices of bread, no matter how careful you happen to be.

It is a great bagel knife, and a good choice if you like bakery breads with firm crusts. Knives are one of those kitchen tools I think should be pretty multidimensional and have multiple applications. This is not that kind of tool, and pretty single-purposed. It also fails at doing a major part of what it was supposed to do well. Great bread knife, bad sandwich knife (better review name!) It is nice enough that I am not sorry I bought it, but wouldn't buy it again.

[If the star system allowed, I'd give a 4 for quality/workmanship and a 2 for design/application. Man am I picky today.]

Update: June 2013. It rusts terribly. If you put it in the dish drainer to air dry it will rust.

I've made a number of purchases in my quest for the ultimate sandwich knife, and this is the best. My last purchase was a zylis sandwich knife and it couldn't slice straight. This knife on the other hand, is a fantastic slicer not just for a sandwich knife, but compared to all knives. The tip profile works perfect for getting at the bottom of the mayo jar without scraping up the plastic, and it spreads very well. Works great as a bread knife too. No, it doesn't look like it'll be easy to sharpen if the time ever comes, but it performs excellent. Go ahead and buy it, you won't be disappointed with this one.

Cutco Homemaker +8 Set Brand New

Cutco Homemaker +8 Set Brand NewI've had Cutco for 35yrs, the full set plus a set of table knives. I use it daily and like it a lot. However the first time I had a problem the paring knife tip broke off, just a bit on the end I sent it back for replacement and received my same knife back, but with the blade simply ground down till it had a point again. No longer do I have the nice balanced graceful blade but a stubby blade that does not work as well. At that same time I purchased another paring knife from Cutco because I use it so much, trusting that Cutco was going to replace the first knife. That blade now has a chip out of it, about 1/4" down from the tip. I am afraid if I send it to them they'll simply grind off a lot of metal again, leaving me with something that is not the knife I purchased. It isn't much of a guarantee, in my opinion. Oh, and now that I'm thinking about it, a couple of the long-bladed knives have corrosion in the handles where the blade metal touches the handle material, which means it will one day separate. And yes, you can put them in the diswasher but they lose their glossy finish. I would try another brand before buying from them again.

There are at least eight disadvantages to Cutco knives.

1)Inferior tempering. Cutco is stamped instead of forged. All best knives are forged (with the exception of Henckels Twinstar which is using a new technology called sintering) because forged knives make a better edge among other reasons. All the worst and cheapest knives are stamped because it is cheaper and easier. The forging process randomises the metal particles for a slightly tougher knife. It also permits the differing thicknesses of metal which is necessary for a heavy raised bolster between the knife handle and knife blade. Forged knives have more metal than stamped knives and thus are heavier. The forging process enables extra metal proportioning to give the knife perfect balance. Most prefer the weight of a forged knife. It feels heftier and more substantial. Forged knives generally are thicker, have more heft, hold an edge better, provide bolsters which brings better balance and safety, and obviously have been made with a lot more care and craftmanship. The forging process enhances the flexibility (making it less likely to snap to break), density, and hardness, and better solidifies the structure of a knife.

2)Steel. Cutco claims they use the highest quality steel money can buy. They call it high carbon surgical grade steel. While this is subjective Cutco uses 440A grade steel while most top of the line knives (which is where Cutco is priced at) uses 440C, which is higher in carbon. 440C is more expensive to make, buy, and manufacture with. 440C also makes a sharper edge, and holds it better. Because of it's grain structure 440C is also more stain resistant. And while 440C steel is generally only found in top of the line kitchen knives, 440A is often found in the cheaper, run of the mill type kitchen knives. Where they got the surgical grade label is beyond me, 440A steel doesn't have a regular grade and a surgical grade. When you think of surgical instruments you think sanitary, expensive, and high qualityit's just sales hype.

3)Lack of bolsters provides for inferior balance and less safety.

4)Double-D edge. Most cooking enthusiasts prefer a straight edge which the double-d is not and you cannot sharpen Cutco edges yourself whenever you please. Salespeople use the ol' rope a dope trick when giving a presentation because the serrated pattern cuts tougher objects better, but any chef or cooking enthusiast will tell you that kitchen knives are made to cut through food like meat, bread, and tomatoesnot rope or leather. For that a utility knife is bestand there's are plenty of utility knives that cut through rope and leather better than Cutco's.

Cutco's salespeople swear up and down double-d edges are neither straight, nor serrated but unique (don't all salespeople?). The Double-D edge is in fact another type of serrated edge. Cutco calls their serrated edge "Double D" just like Spyderco calls their serrated edges "Spyderedge." Except Spyderco isn't trying to fool anyone and markets their as a superior serration pattern while Cutco tries to claim theirs is different.

But anyone who knows anything about knives can tell you the ^^^^ pattern on the edge (take a look at the cutco.com website for an explanation and drawing, currently at) makes it a serrated edge. The whole double-d thing is just hype like everything else about the knives. The Double-D edge is not patented and never was.

The problem with the serrated pattern is that it doesn't make a clean cutlittle nicks and tears in the food is made. Serrated knives are generally only good for fibrous vegetables and breadwhere it is needed. Cutco reps may claim that it makes a clean cut, but this is only true for cutting stuff you can press straight down on (like butter), but for things you need to slide the blade back and forth on (like meat) the teeth will tear it up. Serrated edges are also somewhat more difficult to clean.

As for sharpness, you may think they stay razor sharp but in reality only the crevices of the blade edge are. You see serrated edges like the Double-D's look like this: ^^^^^^ when contacting the food the points get worn down rather quickly but the crevices stay sharp, so it may seem like it is razor sharp but in reality only the crevices are. It can never be as sharp as a well maintained plain edge, the edge preferred by cooking enthusiasts and professionals. Maybe a serrated edge is better at cutting rope (the rope a dope trick), but the best kitchen knives are not made to cut through rope, they are made to make a good, clean cuts on food. Master chef Wylie Dufresne just recently told GQ magazine in their Sept '03 edition, "I have plenty of friends whose parents have Cutco in a knife block. You pull them out and they're all as dull as can be."

Other knives you can sharpen yourself whenever you want, but with Cutco knives you need Cutco to sharpen them for you. I will refer you once again to Cutco's own website: at cutco.com, currently here:

"For resharpening of Double-D® or straight-edged knives, send them along with a return shipping and handling fee of $5.00 (1-3 items) or $8.00 (4 or more items) to the CUTCO address below."

You have to pay for them to be sent in and sent back all the while without your knives. I've heard of representatives of the company coming out and sharpening them for you, but this is by no means guranteed to happen so there is obviously good reason they don't state this on their website.

5)Handles. Of course this is subjective but the handles are different from any of the others and some people find them uncomfortable (especially those with extremely large or small hands since they were designed for the average hand), some others find them dorky looking and wouldn't want to set them out on the dinner table. Sure the handles were designed to be comforableall handles are designed that way! And like all good salepeople, Cutco even has a good story to tell about it. That doesn't mean they actually ARE comfortable. Consumer Reports, the leading consumer magaine, also found the handles to be uncomfortable. The handles are made of what Cutco call "Thermoresin" and thermo=heated and resin=plastic, injection molded plastic is the absolute cheapest material cost and method possible. And the type of plastic the handles are made out of, celluloid plastic, is highly nitrated and self-oxidizing like the gun cotton in smokeless gun powder (to a lesser extent) thus highly flammablenot good for a kitchen knife. Although the rivots are made of what they call "nickel-siver", there is no silver in them. They call it nickel-silver because it has a silver color to it. The handles have no current patent on them, other companies could copy them but choose not to. Wear Ever cookware had handles designed by the same person in the 30's and 40s, they have since dumped this design.

6)Corrosion. Many people (including Consumer Reports magazine) believe that Cutco blades corrode a little easier than most. Consumer Reports seemed to hint that it may have to do with the type of metal used, polishing, or coating.

7)Restrictions when buying. Since you can only buy from a Vector rep, you are forced to select your rep with care because a flock of amateur sales reps can and will include a range from the best professionals through the worst rip off artists.

8)Price. Many will agree that Cutco is not best for commercial use but it is priced for commercial use. You can get a 7 piece block of top of the line hand-forged, bolstered, well balanced Wusthof-Trident Grand Prix for $249. A similar set of Cutco can easily run you $300-$400. Tramontina Professional is supposed to be the best value having the same features as the best knives but at about 1/3 the price. There may also be hidden costs added (such as shipping & handling, C.O.D., sales tax, etc.) that make the actual price much higher that the displayed and originally discussed price.

Cutco is sold at prices very similar to knives that are top of the line yet are not as good as them in almost every way except they do have comparable rockwell hardness, are full tang, and have a good guarantee. I wouldn't spend my hard earned money on guarantees though and the other qualities you can find in much cheaper knives.

The average household has very cheap, low quality knives that generally only last 5-15 years. So when they hear there is a forever guarantee it becomes the main selling point. What they don't know is all knives in that price range are built to last a lifetime and with proper care they definately will. The only way they won't is if you abuse them, which Cutco's guarantee doesn't even fully cover. Also, in case it doesn't last a lifetime, many top of the line knives carry a lifetime guarantee.

Cutco's money back guarantee is for 15 days. Most large retail chains like Sears and Walmart carry a 30 day money back satisfaction guarantee. The forever guarantee is nice, but a couple nitpicks: "Should you damage your CUTCO through misuse or abuse, we will replace the item for one half of the current retail price." it needs to be sent in to Cutco "with an explanatory note" and Cutco is the sole determinor of what is misuse or abuse (such as chipping your knife), also the "guarantee is intended solely for consumer/in-home use." Don't believe me? Check out the Cutco website yourself:

I you are looking for the guarantee, Henckels Twinstar and Messermeister (among many others) both offer similar lifetime warrantees and are of better quality (in many people's opinions). If you must have the best kitchen knives available, Wusthof Trident Grand Prix is highly regarded as the best kitchen knives money can buy and the prices are similar to Cutco's. If you are looking for brand name, Henckels is considered the #1 selling brand in the world, been in business since 1731, and they will replace their twinstar knives that have a "diamond edge" with new ones if they get dull. For the best value, you can find high quality, forged, full tang knives with bolsters at a very reasonable price (about 1/3 that of Cutco's) you might want look into the Tramontina Professional Series which is regarded as the best value in the knife industry. If you don't want to spend very much money on knives, the Forschner Victoronox is made by the same people who make Swiss Army Knives and considered the best of the very cheap kitchen knives. If you don't want to sharpen your knives, you might want to look at the Regent Sheffield Infinity Edge or Henckels Twinstar depending on how much you want to spend. Most retail stores have a 30-day money back guarantee.

My opinion is that Cutco is not worth their price and I'm sure most professionals would agree. In fact you would have great difficulty finding one culinary arts school, master chef, or knife expert that recommends this brand. Norman Weinstein, a nationally recognized knife skills instructor who's taught since 1995 at the Institute of Culinary Education was quoted by the Baltimore Sun newspaper as saying "Why, why, would you buy such a knife?"

Cutco is able to sell their knives at such a high price because they are being sold to people by their sons, nephews, and granddaughters (basically people who care for them and trust them, or their friends, and know very little about knives). Consumersearch.com looked over all the professional reviews available and while 11 professionals liked Wusthof Trident the best, only one liked Cutco and that one only liked Cutco compared to other stamped knives:

The bottom line is that no brand or set is best for everyone and you should check them all out and compare to decide which is best for your needs, wants, and preferences. The retail store is probably the best place to do this, unfortunately Cutco is not sold there.

Cutco knives are fantastic. I have owned them for years and I sell them, but this person is ripping you off. They're charging you $300 more than getting them from a rep and you don't even get all the perks of buying them from a rep. I promise if you really like Cutco, you will benefit much more from buying from a rep.

I inherited a full set which my parents bought in the 1950's, They are super. My mother never let them soak in the sink, so they are like new. I sharpen them regularly and am always amazed at how well they have held up and the job they do with ease. You will never regret purchasing these knives. Money well spent especially since they have a lifetime guarantee.

Mikasa Riverside Satin 18/0 45-Piece Flatware Set

Mikasa Riverside Satin 18/0 45-Piece Flatware SetI ordered two sets of this flatware. While I thought it was beautiful, I have had issues with the quality of the flatware. The second set arriveded with three pieces that were chipped. It took 6 weeks to get replacements, after countless emails...and the replacements didn't match the originals in style or size. This morning I discovered that the knives are chipping as well.

I hand-wash my dishes and flatware and I have never left the flatware to soak. After I use it, I wipe it off with a paper towel and then place it on the counter for washing. Mikasa advertises that the flatware comes with a lifetime warranty....but I don't want to spend the rest of my life asking for replacements, piece by piece.

I wish I could return BOTH sets to Amazon. I am very unhappy.
