Shun DM0500W 8-Inch Ken Onion Chef's Knife

Shun DM0500W 8-Inch Ken Onion Chef's KnifeI'd had my eye on this knife for a while. The minute it went on sale I bought it. It is now, by far, my favorite knife, so much so that I went back and bought the 6". It fits the hand better than any I've ever used and it cuts well, like butta.

This knife is wonderfully sharp! It really feels great in the hand too. I had always wanted quality knives and finally too the plunge over the Holidays when I was able to purchase these knives as a "lightning deal" and saved alot of money. Even still at full price I would be very happy with them. They make me want to cook more at home to because they are such a delight to use. The only down side I thought was that the end of the blade where it goes into the handle is so wide that it won't fit in most knife blocks. In fact I have regular Shun classics that I also purchased and the Ken Onion series won't fit in that knife block either, not a big deal really I just leave it in the sleeve it came with untill I'm ready to use it. Eventually I will get a magnetic knife holder and stick it to the wall or something.

My wife and I are loyal Shun knife users. That is a disclosure of bias. We were converted to Japanese steel and design via Shun. I had always owned excellent German knives, with their heavier, traditional designs--different--but neither demonstrably better or worse overall than Japanese knives. Clearly both are used by professionals. We simply changed our preference to Shun. My wife has small hands and was less comfortable than I was in terms of the build, weight and balance of our German knives. We both love the simplicity and ease of use of lighter, possibly somewhat sharper, Japanese knives. (That itself is a contentious issue but overgeneralizing is too easy to do). One of her favorites, a combination of Eastern and Western influences, is a Shun DM0707 Classic 10-Inch Chef's Knife. The corresponding traditional German knife is too heavy for her. This is basically about one's personal taste. I do not think it can be otherwise. It might take a trial and error process to find what you like best as it was for us. You probably know what both nations' alternatives offer in their distinct advantages. Sometimes the two traditions are combined like Ken Onions's designs. I will discuss our first Ken Onion designed knife for Shun in this light.

Shun knives are costly but we employ them so frequently and truly enjoy using them that they have proven to be good value--to us. We also see them as tools with a job to do. That can be done better or worse according to each individual. Having preferences, even strong presences is not a problem; just find out what works best for you. We try to judge them in both their handling and in food preparation results.

This 8-inch Ken Onion Chef's knife is a very different design both in the handle and blade--radically different--from Shun's Classic and Premier lines as examples. You pay a premium for the difference in his design. Depending upon the specific technique(s) you are used to or were taught, this knife, and how & where you are used to holding and using it, you will likely have a strong opinion about this one. Slicing and dicing with it can be fast and efficient. That is best if you feel comfortable and know how to efficiently direct your force. What is most fundamental for me is that we might differ about just how comfortable or effective it is to hold this knife but it certainly can function well. It should or at least could, offer most of us the control we want. A professional would do wonders with it although that is not a relevant point. We must match as best as possible our own limited level of technique with an array of very fine knives. Unfortunately, ultimately one needs to actually use it. No doubt there is a suggested technique encouraged for this line of knives but that does not guarantee if it will be personally compatible or preferable for you. The single biggest advantage to me is that left handed users can have equal access to this design compared to choosing either of the two versions, left and right, of specialized "D" handle knives available for their regular lines. If your household has both left and right-handed persons in the kitchen this could be a crucial factor.

Initially it took a while to adapt to the Shuns and so it could simply take more time to adapt in reverse to the Ken Onion design. The differences in the handle should be obvious but if you are new to these knives please note the very thick, and prominent bolster on this knife. Compare that to Shun Classic 10-inch Chef's knife which lacks this feature except where it meets the handle. The blade and especially the heel are quite different from Shun's other knives. In practical terms the Ken Onion bolster offers quite a different feel if you usually like to hold that part of the blade. Of course it will have an effect over time when sharpening and at least for me, not a good one. I do not miss a Western bolster when easily sharpening Shun knives at the heel. Of course a prominent bolster like this is clearly a Western convention that you may already use daily. But in the meantime, I prefer the Shun style of knives that I have grown accustomed to already. Since I disclosed from the start that I already chose to leave my German style knives I prefer classic Shun Japanese knives' weight, straight handle and blade. Conversely, if you love German knives but want to try Shun steel, here you have it. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with Ken Onion's design and indeed, he has purposely redesigned his line as a Westerner using this fine steel. The right thing to do would be to report back later if this largely subjective evaluation changes. It is a reasonably well balanced knife with the sharpness I know and appreciate, with the same hard clad steel, just rendered in a different shape with new emphases for Shun. The sculptured forms of wood and metal are relatively thicker and/or more undulating. They combine in delivering something new in appearance and relatively unfamiliar.

Ken Onion knife is yet another example of a variation of Western design using Japanese materials. There is obviously a market. To some this design might offer the best of both traditions. Certainly others have experimented with exactly that both in Japan and Europe many times before with which you can compare. So far, I can mainly appreciate its potential but I do not deny its quality. I deducted one star for my individual, hands on experience.

Yamazaki Ariana Gold Accent 5-Piece Flatware Place Setting, Service for 1

Yamazaki Ariana Gold Accent 5-Piece Flatware Place Setting, Service for 1After using Yamazaki Ariana Gold Accent flatware for more than 2 years I can not recommend it. The flatware eventually became tarnished looking, the gold is spotty and the handles look dirty and tarnished. If you are going to only handwash your cutlery then perhaps this item will work for you.

Chef'n ZipFlip Icing Spreader

Chef'n ZipFlip Icing Spreader, Cherry / AnthraciteIn my quest to find a suitable replacement for the cheaply-made spatulas that came with my Vitamix blender, I purchased two of these spreaders. I was looking for spreaders that were long enough to reach into the blender containers and I also wanted spreaders that were better in terms of thickness and quality. These turned out to be perfect replacements. The length is ideal and, unlike the original spreaders that came with my blender, they are NOT flimsy at all. I also like the smooth, nonstick surface and they seem to be resistant to staining. I've been using these for several months now and I'm very happy with them.

Bought this because the spatula we were using to apply mayo went missing. Getting down into those large containers and scooping up the last dollops for a sandwich can get messy with a spoon, and a small rubber scraper just doesn't spread like it should. Was pleasently surprized when this 'ZipFlip' arrived because it was plenty long, had a cutting edge for cakes, and was robust as far as heft was concerned.

This is one of those kitchen helpers that you will see advertized or even notice it in the store but aren't hit immediately with the vision of how it could make life easier as you cook. But once it finds a place in your gadget drawer you will find it indispensible for all those odd jobs that require venturing into the bottom of jars, pans ( a really good 'Bundt pan' scraper ), cans and smearing icing on cakes (especially cupcakes).

Handy, well made, versatile and it cleans up easily in the dishwasher. Like I said, indispensible.

I plan on buying another.

A good product. I had a larger one I used for flipping eggs and it worked well. This one is very narrow and will be used for icing cakes. It is nice and you can use both ends. It is also easy to clean and lasts a long, long time.

It is so much easier to deal with. I have high-priced steel and wood utensils, but much prefer working with the silicone variety. This spreader is sturdy and gets the job done. I love that it is quite and easy to clean and just wipe dry. The grip and ease of use is great too.

I bought this flatware to go with my tropical decor and have had them for nearly two months. They're very attractive and I do put them in the dishwasher, however I'm cautious about using them daily because they don't feel super sturdy. I'm very happy with this set and receive compliments from guests.

My ex and I bought this less than 3 years ago at TJMaxx for about 20 bucks to go with our Florida/tropical decor. After several runs through the dishwasher, they have tarnished and cracked and I'm looking into buying a new set now. They we're nice for a short while as they obviously serve their purpose, but don't expect them to last long.

Individual Steak knife Pro-Series II Single Steak knife

Individual Steak knife Pro-Series II Single Steak knifeThese arrived lickety-split. The quality is good. They are not as awesome as the knives in the Ergo Chef Pro Series 8 knife set that I bought from Amazon two weeks ago but they are good and a good value. I spent a sick amount of time reviewing all the different steak knives I could get and I really wanted the not serrated German ones that cost over $40 each but in the end, well, I got six of these for less than one of those and they are good quality and I'm happy.

They appeared to me to be slightly larger than I expected from the photo. The knives are 9.3" long and the blade is 0.8" wide where it meets the handle. The handle is made of a slightly shinier material than the Pro Series knives. The balance is good. Yea, whatever, they're knives. Get 'em.

Edgeware 50084 Pro Manual Counter Pull Though Sharpener

Edgeware 50084 Pro Manual Counter Pull Though SharpenerIt seems to be assembled well. It just takes a lot of elbow grease if your knives are dull. If they're somewhat sharp, it seems to do a decent job fine-tuning them.

I found this sharpener to be a real disappointment. I had a smaller cheaper model from another company that did a much better job for half the money. After 30 hard pulls on the diamond rods I still needed quite a bit of pressure just to slice a tomato-not at all what I was used to from my old unit. Yes, it is well built and feels good in the hand as you use it-it just doesn't sharpen very well.

I liked the idea of the quad sharpener for 2 different types of knives. I was hoping to find a sharpener that would keep my knives sharp in between stone sharpening. It works ok on some of the cheaper knives, but not so well on the more expensive Shun or Forschner. Great for house knives, but for working knives there is no easy way out, get a stone.

This is a very good product and I use it often. It's convenient not to have to have two sharpeners, one for standard knives and the other for Santuko blades. This sharpener features sharpening elements for both, side-by-side. It creates a renewed, sharpened edge on any of the knives I've used it on in a few gentle pulls through the sharpening element. The only reason I don't give this product 5 stars is that I think it takes just a few too many pulls for the knife edge to reach the maximum sharpness. Other than that, what a deal for the dollar!

I have to agree with others, while it's a nice concept it works "ok" (at best) with cheapo kitchen knives, but it's quite terrible with good knives made of hard material. I _think_ (and can't verify this because they don't publish the specs) that the angle is not quite right. I used this unit on a decent set of Wusthoff's and it resulted it me having to take them to a professional sharpener to rectify the damage it caused. The sharpener told me the angle looked off and I have to agree. Fine for your average kitchen knife stuff, but keep this away from your "good" knives.

BUILT Neoprene Spicy Relish Lunch Tote, BlackI wanted a decent looking lunch bag that did not look like a child's. One issue I had when searching was no shoulder strap on most. I came across this and it is perfect. It is a tad pricey but I love it! (As much as you can love a lunch bag)

This lunch tote is nice and roomy, but not bulky. Its sleek, and stylish. I have gotten many compliments on it. Keeps food items cold (there is a little side pocket for an ice pack.) I highly recommend this lunch tote for anyone who needs a new lunch bag!!

I love that it's washable. And, of course, it's so very sleek and stylish. I only wish it was a *little* bigger (but not much bigger I chose it because it's small and compact). I can pack lunch and 2 snacks in it, all in plastic containers, and that usually fits, but add anything else and it probably won't close. If I packed the snacks in sandwich bags, it'd probably fit more, but my personal preference is using reusable containers over throwing out plastic bags every day. It does stretch a good bit, though, and sometimes surprises me with how it can fit more than I expect.

First off, I love how vibrant the colors are on this lunch tote. They simply pop out at you. There is a pocket on the inside that is perfect for cutlery. The storage capacity of this lunch tote never ceases to amaze me. I have fit a can of fruit cocktail, a can of coca cola, and two food containers inside with room to spare. Items inside the tote stay relatively cool if kept out of the fridge, but I always keep mine in the refrigerator at work. Love the strap so you can carry it over the shoulder. The handles on the tote are okay, but I have to wrestled my hands out of them sometimes. Too bad I cannot put my hands on a diet. Totally love this tote! Well worth the price!

I want to make a note too of how soft this tote is. I would not recommend this tote or any other Built lunch tote similar in design to this, because unless items inside are protected by a container they are very well apt to be crushed or smashed. I guess the same goes with adults too maybe.

Mundial 5817-10 10-Inch Cimeter Knife, Black

Mundial 5817-10 10-Inch Cimeter Knife, BlackI have owned the Mundial5817-10 Cimeter knife for about a year now and I love it. I bbq, make sausage, and cure my own meats on a regular basis and needed a knife for trimming large caps of fat and cubing up the big meat clods I buy. This knife is perfect for the job, the curved blade makes it super easy to trim off large caps of fat and seperate muscles. The size might be a little intimidating at first but the knife is very light and even is good for semi precision work, I have used the knife for 3 hours straight before with little fatigue. For the price and performance I have and will continue to recomend to anybody any of the Mundial knives. I also own the 12inch slicer, 6inch curved boning knife, and 2 8inch chefs knives and love them all and love the price.

Hamilton Beach 74250 Carve 'n Set Electric Knife with Case, White

Hamilton Beach 74250 Carve 'n Set Electric Knife with Case, WhiteThis is a really nice electric knife carving set. I bought it because it was such a good deal and also because i always find myself saying, "Gee, it would be much easier to cut this up if i had an electric knife." And now i have one. The nice storage box, not mentioned very well in description, makes it very easy to store. It is very annoying with other knives i have seen to have blades in one place, electrical part in another and carving fork somewhere else. this makes it very easy to store in one place. And its from a name you know and love!

This is a great little electric knife set. The knife is powerful, the blades are sharp, and the handy cutting fork and storage box make it a sweet deal. It took me only a minute to figure out the best way to open the plastic storage box, so don't be too discouraged by the other reviewers. I didn't find it all that difficult, and it's so handy to have everything stored neatly together.

If you're looking for a good deal on an electric knife, I recommend the 74250 Hamilton Beach Carve 'N Set.

I hate this knife. I've had it for a year now and every once in a while I figure I'll give it another shot so I pull it out again and am quickly reminded of why I hate it.

First: the two blades are too far apart I end up with a good fraction of what I'm cutting getting shredded BETWEEN to the two blades.

Second: there's no lock for the trigger so you have to hold it down for the entirety of the slice (and if sawing through a thick roast, you're holding it down for a REALLY long time).

Third: The handle is large and awkward. I don't have small hands but just to be sure, I had my large handed friend try it. He didn't consider it to be particularly comfortable either.

I'm going to see if I can find a better electric knife because, lord knows, a good one could get a lot of use in my kitchen. The "try agains" for this one are over I'm putting it on Ebay for some other unfortunate soul to use. Clearly there are a lot of positive reviews so I'll sell it to someone who might actually like the thing!

Victorinox Cutlery 3.25-Inch Paring Knife, Small Black Polypropylene Handle

Victorinox Cutlery 3.25-Inch Paring Knife, Small Black Polypropylene HandleI have half a dozen or so of these and use them constantly much more than my larger, expensive knives. A friend gave me one as a stocking stuffer for Christmas about 5 years ago and I loved it so much that I ordered more. They all still cut as well as they did originally but they're so handy that I just bought another two. They're the perfect, daily-use small knife for light cooking. The serrated version is excellent, too. At this price, you can't go wrong!

I ordered this knife because it was a bit cheaper than the one with the larger handle which was the same length. Mistake.

The handle was just a bit too small for my comfort, and I ended up ordering the larger handle as well.

Like all Swiss Army knives, you can count on a beautifully sharp blade which cuts easily and cleanly thru onions, carrots, just about anything. Great blade.

Got this for my wife to replace a dangerously crappy paring knife, as she likes thin/light paring knives and I find myself using it more than the more expensive forged knife which were my standard. Plus, I just run it through the dishwasher (in its own pocket of the silverware section) and touch it up with a steel when it comes out.

Now I'm wondering if I should buy a 5" too.

Hagerty Zippered Holloware Bags

Hagerty 19500 15-by-15-inch Zippered Holloware Bag, BlueI must agree with the reviewer from Georgia. I purchased several Hagerty Zippered Bags from two different vendors here on Amazon.com. The first vendor sent my order for (4) 9"x12" bags and (4) 15"x15" bags; the second vendor (ordered several months later) sent my order for (1) 24"x30" bag. Both vendors, by the way, were excellent to deal with. All my silver was polished to it's best and placed into the bags and put away for long-term storage. (I am a retired butler to one of the country's great families. I know all about polishing silver and what is, and what is not, a good polish of this metal).

It was in June of this year that I received a notice from the second vendor regarding the large tray bag. She asked that I check the silver and notify her of the silver tray's condition. I took it out of storage, removed it from the bag and was amazed to find that the silver not only tarnished badly after less than two months, but that there was also a while chalky film covering most of the sterling tray. I called her immediately and reported what I had found. She explained that she had received the same replies from a couple of her customers. It was then I found out that Hagerty has suspended its USA production of the bags and has out-sourced them to China. What a surprise! The bags may look the same, but the quality of material and whatever tarnish retarding properties that may have been added to the material was very much lacking. It may, more importantly, not at all be safe for the silver (sterling or plate). She replaced the bag with one made in the USA. I had an unused boxed bag from the other set and checked the box for manufacture's origin. It was Made in China.

I immediately looked at all the silver in the other seven smaller bags and the same condition found on the tray was also on all the pieces comprising the large sterling tea set. Now I was horrified. I called the first vendor, explained the situation, but they were not able to replace the bags as the 90-day return period had expired. I was given the phone number to Hagerty to find a solution.

Unfortunately calling Hagerty is of no use to anyone. You will get the famous "menu" to select the person you want to contact. Only problem is that you aren't given any indication who or what this person is or does. I selected at random 3 different persons and left voice messages. There was never any response. After two weeks I sent an e-mail asking what solution could be arranged for replacement of these inferior bags. No response. The next week, I sent a not-so-nice e-mail outlining my very great displeasure with their product, but more importantly, their total lack of customer service. I even mentioned that I would write this review thinking they might not want unfavorable mention of this incident made public to such a large audience as is found on Amazon.com. My personal customer service intentions are always carried through to never less than satisfactory expectations. Hence, this review.

If you order these bags, I would be very careful to do so without first checking with the supplier/vendor about where the Hagerty bags are manufactured. On a side note consider this, too. I received the large replacement tray bag (Made in USA) and after a "down to the metal" polish, I put it into the bag. I checked the tray just a few days ago and noticed it was beginning to tarnish. So, what gives with the USA bags? Like the Georgia reviewer, I have used the same Hagerty bags for nearly 50 years without any issue. Now, these new bags don't seem to be any better, or more effective, than wrapping the silver in newspaper. I would avoid Hagerty altogether and make my own bags from yardage from Pacific Silver Cloth ... as I am now doing.

I bought several of these silversmith's cloth bags and found that they do not keep my sterling silver flatware nearly as tarnish free as my older bags that came with my silver. My older feltt bags came with the silver 35 yrs

ago and have kept the silver tarnish free. These newer Hagerty silversmith cloths do not.

Hagerty products have been around for over 100 years and continue to be one of the best buys I ever make when I have a piece of silver to store. It keeps me from not using my silver, by always keeping the items in the bags polished and rarely tarnishes if I get the item washed and replaced in the Hagerty bag right after use( don't let it sit around the house for a week or so!) I got these to replace a set of knives that had become dull and no longer would hold an edge. What appealed to me about these knives was that they were stainless steel and dishwasher safe. I took off one star because one of the four knives arrived dull. Something wrong with the way the serrations were cut. Additionally one star was removed because the instructions that came with the set states that you must remove the knives from the dishwasher prior to the final rinse cycle. Now, if something is dishwasher safe, that means to me that it can withstand a complete dishwasher cleaning/rinsing/drying cycle. Not these.

The three sharp remaining knives are good and sharp and I have no problem with their performance as knives. Had I not thrown away the packing materials, I would probably have exchanged the set I received for another one.

Update 5/30/13. A second knife in the set has now gone dull. The remaining pair have been put into storage and a replacement set has been ordered. Although from a different manufacturer.

Messermeister 3-Inch Clip Point Parer with Matching Sheath, Orange

Messermeister 3-Inch Clip Point Parer with Matching Sheath, OrangeI've been using the Messermeister 3" paring knife for 4 months. It's such a handy little knife that I use it almost daily. So far it hasn't needed to be sharpened. The orange color makes it's so easy to spot in the drawer. This is the first paring knife I've owned with a shield; love it, no worry about the blade getting damaged in the drawer. I don't put my knives in the dishwasher so I can't comment as to that.

Nicely made (in Germany) 3-inch paring knife from Messermeister. The blade is sharp, and the handle is solid and textured plastic for a good grip. The sheath is very basic, and probably more for shipping than anything else. I'm happy with this knife. It's very comparable to similarly priced knifes from Victorinox, but the orange handle is a nice change of pace. Recommended.

I have bought three of these in the last 2 years. I carry them to cut fruit, use to cut veggies and tomatoes and ... yes, avocado's. They are just so useful and best of all they stay sharp. Really sharp.

Slitzer® 21-Pc. Professional Chef's Cutlery Set with CaseThis 21 piece knife set is absolutely awesome! My wife uses hers all the time to make the most precise cuts she has ever made. The case is diesel and won't allow any damage to the knives. It may be a bit overkill, but when you have a chef who wants to protect their "tools", then this case is absolutely perfect! Fast delivery and exactly as promised.

I would reccomnd this for the begining chef it is an excellent set of knves

Okay, ever see a knife set, 21 pieces for 99 dollars. At $109 delivered I was skeptical, but i had actually handled and used this set before. If for any reason you were going to go out and spend a hundred dollars on a single knife, smack yourself in the face, and go buy this set, any knife you could ever need, a 5 pound cleaver, razor sharp cutlery, and everything in the picture is true, probably bigger and nicer than you thought!! Buy 2!!!!

Aside from the large metal briefcase that looks as if you're planning an assassination these are a decent set of knives for the price. Fairly light weight plastic handles do feel a touch flimsy and the blades themselves are not incredibly sharp, but again for the novice or otherwise non-professional chef these are hardly concerns certainly given the price point. If your concern is durability I would likely look elsewhere; indeed the knives themselves do their job and no problems have yet arisen however they do occasionally feel (as well as look) relatively cheap. The only other minor complaint would be the sort of unnecessary items that come with it. While it is great to find a set of knives with a 10" chef knife, cleaver, and what could otherwise be described a machete I certainly did not need the included potato peeler. A fine product though all-in-all though; likely worth the capital.

This has everything a starter chef would want or need. The only thing missing is the roll case to make it easier to carry to class. It also has a few extra things not needed for class but can be used for other things. It wasn't a bad price for it either. Most places are asking almost $300 especially if you buy them individually.
