Casabella Silicone Cutting Board, Set of 4

The set just arrived, and there was no red, as in product photo. Instead there was a yellow one. The other colors were the same. I would have preferred the red for meat, but can live with it. But that's not the reason for 2 STARS. The silicone backing simply does not work. I have a wood surface counter, as well as a laminated counter top, and the mats move all over the place. You can feel the silicone backing, but it does absolutely nothing to keep the mats from slipping or sliding all over both of the counters. I'm really disappointed with this item. Oh, and calling them "boards", is a misnomer. They're less than a 16th of an inch thick. I did expect that, but come on...call them mats, and not boards.

I purchased these thinking they seemed like a great way of preventing cross-contamination of food when cutting multiple items for a meal. I didn't realize when purchasing them, however, that they aren't dishwasher safe. At first I didn't mind and would hand wash them after using them. Almost a year later though, I've come to realize that they are a total pain to clean. The vegetable one is fine but I've noticed that meat tends to stick to the meat boards and can be difficult to get thoroughly clean. It isn't necessarily obvious when they are wet when washing them because the boards are clear so products like chicken or other meat residue can blend with the water. After they dry, however, there are still little pieces of meat and/or meat residue stuck to the boards almost every time. As a result, I have to hand wash them two or three times to get them clean. I've grown to hate them over time. I'd much rather have thicker boards with the same color coding that can be cleaned in the dishwasher and disinfected/better cleaned from the heat and steam. If they hadn't cost as much as they did, I would have pitched them a long time ago. Save yourself time and money and look for something better.

I've used flexible cutting boards for a long time now, and tend to buy a new set every year because of the potential for contamination. I'm really incredibly happy with this set. The past sets that I've used have had a definite tendency to slip, and, unlike some of the other reviewers here, I've found that the silicone backing really does help keep these boards more stable.

These boards will mark up pretty quickly, as will any plastic or wood cutting boards. This is actually a good thing; it means that the edge of your knife blade isn't being dulled every time you cut something.

These color coded cutting boards are just Okay. They are very thin silicone and are coded for different food products but I would have liked a "cutting" board to be thicker. One side does have a grip side so they don't slide all over your counter. I still use them but place them over my existing plastic cutting board for more cushion and stability while cutting.

I'll start by saying I love the way they look. Fun, colorful, sleek. That's what attracted me to them and ultimately why I purchased them.

When they arrived, I found that they were surprisingly thin and very flexible. The rubber backing doesn't grip the counter (specifically granite, since that's what's in my kitchen) and if you cut anything on them once, you will leave a mark. After one use, they already have cut marks all over the place.

For what they cost, I'd say look elsewhere.

Kuhn Rikon Mini-Pro Knife Sharpener

I have a bunch of Kuhn Rikon knives. I wanted to spend a fortune on high end knives like Shun, but the the Kuhn Rikon knives did such a good job that, with an entire set costing less than a single Shun, I quickly abandoned "status" and bought the Kuhn Rikons.

No matter who makes a knife or how well the knives are treated, they will eventually need sharpening. Since the knives carried the Kuhn Rikon label, I decided the sharpener should, too. The sharpener does not disappoint! Just a few strokes and my knives are just as sharp as the day the were unsealed! The sharpener is virtually idiot-proof since all one has to do is pull a knife through a few times.

The one odd thing about the sharpener is that it's awkward to open at first. It was a bit sticky. However, the sharpener does such a good job that I decided not to take off any stars. DEFINITELY recommended!

I have several Kuhn Rikon knives, and love them. They are so much better than the more expensive knives that I own. So, when I saw this sharpener advertised on TV, I came to Amazon to see if I could find a better deal (which I did), and ordered it. It arrived within a few days, and I immediately sharpened all of my knives. I can't really say that I saw much of a difference in the before and after sharpening. I have another knife sharpener that seems to work just as well, and cost half as much. I am giving it 3 stars because it is OK...but wouldn't recommend or buy again.

I'm not a knife snob. I can't afford the really top-notch blades, and I've never taken the time to learn how to use a whetstone or a sharpening steel. But I do like the Kuhn-Rikon and Pure Komachi knives I have, and when their edges finally dulled, I wasn't thrilled at the prospect of buying all-new blades.

I took a chance on the Kuhn-Rikon Mini Pro, and it's great! 20 swipes through the disks, and I can cut through an orange without putting any pressure on the knife handle. The sharpener is small and tucks away nicely. It may not be the connoisseur's choice, but it works for me!

Seemed pricy when I ordered it, but or kitchen space is limited. This thing holds a ton of knives...and now our counter top is free of clutter. Black & Decker should hire new people to design there products and also require them to go out in the real world and try them before marketing them. The screws are too short if you use there spacers because the Handle will hit the cabinet on the bottom keeping you from removing it to clean it. I made a block to screw up under the cabinet then mounted the opener on that block so it cleared the bottom. This is ok for me since i was a carpenter. But most home owners would have a problem. Hard to believe these companies are more interested in making money than doing it right. If you double up the spacers then the long screws are too short. Some engineering i would say lol

Once mounted the product does work. But a 5 minute install turned out to be 40 minutes.

I bought this Black and Decker space saver can opener to replace one that my wife and I received as a wedding gift in 1992. (It still worked, but the blade had worn down and it wasn't fully opening cans anymore)

Functionally this thing is great it works as advertised and pretty much just like the one it replaced. One added plus is the bottle opener on the bottom no more hunting for a bottle opener when I want a beer, I just walk over, pop the end up underneath the can opener, tilt the bottle the other way and voila! Opened bottle with minimal fuss.

I was somewhat disappointed with one aspect of this opener though I almost couldn't install it correctly under my cabinet and I had to use almost all of the provided spacers up underneath so that it would have enough clearance. Furthermore, I couldn't use the existing holes that I had drilled in my cabinet I had to drill new ones. There should be some kind of standard for these things but there isn't.

The knife sharpener on the side is superfluous for me we don't use it at all.

Ultimately I like this opener for the reasons I got it it works just like the original, looks nice, and has a cool bottle opener. The downside is that it was a pain to install and someone who isn't as handy as I am (and I'm pretty handy, if I do say so myself) would have had problems installing it if their cabinets are the same spec as mine. If not for the tricky install, I'd have rated it a 5.

Alright, I read all of the reviews and actually was concerned about the installation concerns others shared. My husband and I found it to be an easy and basic installation. We were prepared for all cabinets and cabinet depths not being equal or standard in thickness and grade etc which explains mixed reviews on installation. That preparation made this a very easy installation. Other complaints above the cover being in the way or poor quality are completely false from our usage. The cover is actually a great feature, goes all the way back so its out of the way when your opening all can sizes big and small. And when your done you close it and it looks very savvy. Absolutely ecstatic about the quality and how well it works.

I used a 2x4 piece of wood, cut to the diam. of the top of the can opener. Took a piece of paper put on top of the can opener & poked holes in the paper were the screws go into the can opener. Pre-drill the holes in the 2x4, Put screws in the holes & screwed the block of wood to the top of the can opener. Put under counter & screwed down with (4)drywall screws...They will hold can opener firmly, but will not go all the way through the 2x4... Perfect job! Done in about 30 minutes...Hope this will help someone...

All other spatulas have come apart on me and makes me sick to think about pieces that may have ended up in the food. This one is holding up very well with no signs of melting or coming apart. Someone mentioned how they think it not good for pancakes, I make pancakes every sunday. I could see what he was saying but if you push down when using it is not a problem, it does not slide easily under pancakes like other cheaper spatulas, but it does work extremely well. You just have to get use to it.

I am cheap, thrifty whatever wanna call it so to pay this much for a spatula previously I would spend a dollar on was a big deal. I am so glad I did.

I cook allot and makes me feel so much better knowing my family wont be eating any parts or pieces of my spatula makes it worth every penny.

I like this spatula. It scrapes cleanly, resists high temperatures, and looks good enough to display on my counter (along with other utensils from the same "Twin Pure" line). The only downside (and this is true of most of the "Twin Pure" line): the handle is heavier than the actual spatula, so it is not possible to leave it in the mixing bowl (unless the sides of the bowl are fairly tall) without it flipping out of the bowl onto the counter. Still, the pros (function, look, and feel) of this product outweigh that one con.

Here are the downsides none of which warranted lowering the star rating. Not much heft, plastic handle feels like a plastic handle, not much to look at. The pluses: they cut great, didn't cost $275 which probably would have eliminated the minuses but I can live with that huge cost saving. If they hold up as well as a Swiss Army knife, they're a great deal.

I purchased 6 of these knives over 14 years ago in Europe. After years of being used every single day,(they are almost the ONLY knives I use in the kitchen), and being abused by cutting bags and boxes the 2 knives left were getting a bit dull even tho I could still cut tomatoes with them.

Birchware Compostable Assorted Utensils (160mm) 24pcs.

I have to admit that I was very positively surprised to find that Birchware utensils are sturdy enough to compete with plastic utensils.

I ordered an assorted package to distribute samples to our local music festival organizers with whom my committee is working on implementing a zero waste initiative since last year (2012). Since we are collecting food waste we were looking for utensils that were compostable. I'm happy to report that the utensils past our scrutiny and that of the festival directors and they will now order a big number to provide them to the vendors at the festival a good faith effort in order to convince the vendors that this is the way to go in the future.

Unlike an earlier reviewer, we could not find any wood splinters on any of the utensil. They are smooth, do not taste of wood (unless you use it as a lolly-pop?). By comparison, Birchware utensils were actually sturdier and smoother than Aspenware. i suggest you order both to make up your mind.

For now I will give it 4-stars since I wish the fork prongs were a little longer )but this could perhaps compromise the sturdiness of it?).

I will update my review later in July 2013 when we had the opportunity to ask the audience for feedback!

I have been researching different compostable utensils for my new restaurant that is operating with "zero waste". I found the Birchware to be very functional for a wood utensil. The wood texture is definitely different than plastic, but not a bad different, just different. The fork worked fine for salads, potatoes and meat. Although carrots were hard to stab, which is pretty much true for any non-metal utensil. I found the knife to be very useful. We cut into a fairly tough skinned bratwurst and the serrated edge cut right through. It cut through a steak and baked potato just fine. I isn't a steak knife, so it wasn't a clean line, but it did the job plastic or cornware would do and it only takes 60 days to compost in a home composting system. I'm sold and will be using it in my restaurant.

Villeroy & Boch New Cottage Cutlery 5-Piece Place Setting

I have always though very highly of Villeroy and Boch products. I ordered 6 sets of New Cottage Cutlery Setting. One set had a knife that had heavy staining of rust. I never seen a brand new set of flatware, especially Villeroy and Boch's price point, having rust in the flatware set. I return this particular set (Great Amazon.com return policy!) and waited for another set. Unfortunately, the set was temporarily out of stock. So I waited for about 2 weeks for the new set to arrive. And when I opened the new set, the knife also had a small rust spot where the blade meets the handle. I try to remove the rust with Barkeeper's Friend, then I found a small defect on the finish of the knife. This unfinished metal was the cause of the rust build-up. Then I finally found the country of origin of the knife. Guess where it's made??? China. I was very disappointed. So I return this set and was willing to wait for another set. Then Amazon.com wrote that most likely another set will have the same problem and won't bother to sent a replacement set for me. They will only credit me back this set. So now I only have 5 flatware sets. So should I keep them and find another set somewhere else? Or should I return all of them???

I love this set of flatware. I had none of the problems that other reviewer had. I've had them over a year and they are not rusting and I have no problems with any of them. I had ordered twelve sets and plan on ordering more in case they ever get discontinued because they are so pretty.

Victorinox Swiss Classic 3 1/4" Paring Knife, Spear Tip, Serrated, Red

I love, love, love these little utility knives! I think the only kitchen tool I reach for more often is a dish-towel. I use them for everything cutting up vegetables and salads, cubing meat or disassembling a chicken for soup, making cheese platters, and even slitting open boxes from Amazon.com :) I love the serrated edge not too finely serrated (the ones with fine serrations seem to get "stuck" in cheeses and meats.) It just goes right through a tomato without squishing it, and food preparation goes so much faster and easier than with one of those expensive "sharp" edged knives my husband is always trying to convince me to use.

I used to have only one of these, and I guarded it so jealously that my family started calling it "Sting" and warning others not to mess with my Precious. So I ordered a few more, since they're such a bargain. This way I always have a clean one in the drawer when I need one.

Okay Tuttle-fans. I haven't really encountered too many new things to review lately, so I'm going to take you back in time for a review from the past. This incident took place back in my short-lived "gothic" period many years back. If you remember clearly it was when I had a few gothic "friends" who I believe were in a cult of evil. We listened to a lot of Marylen Mansein, which caused me to change into quite a monster sometimes. I guess you could say that this is the second most outrageous encounter I had during this phase of my life. I've gotten lots of responsed regarding the Marylin Mansin review, with people wanting to know more about my gothic-phase, so I'll give you this little occurence, just sort of as a bonus review. It's not quite as wild, but hey, what do you expect?

Anyways, back after the incident where I got into a HUGE physical altercation with my parents and my dog (Morris), I was put under lock-down for a long time up in my room. I wasn't allowed to do much of anything. Just sitting up there in solitary-comfinment like a caged-animal. This one night I came to the table for dinner, and in my place was a paper plate and plastic utensils. My parents informed me that for the safety of everyone in the house, that i not be allowed the use of any hard or sharp objects at the dinner table. I thought this was the most ridiculous thing ever and thought that surely they must be joking. But, oh no, they weren't! I was to eat off of a paper-plate and they even had for me a red, plastic cup. the same color of my fury burning from inside. I told my parents that this was completely uncalled for. I screamed about it, very loudly for only like a minute. My dad just sat there staring at me, somehow remaining calm. He very sternly told me my options. If I wanted to keep up the attitude, i would have to go back to my room and only be able to feast upon the smells of what dinner was. I didn't even really like what Mom had made. She always makes up her own recipies and is constantly working on a really stupid catalogue of alphabetized "original dishes". She has this ridiculous delusion that she will one day get them published in a book, and she will appear on Oprah or Martha Stewart. That night I clearly remember she served Corn-Chops and Turkey-Ravioli. Not my favorites. But I was reeeeeally hungry.

So anyways, I just didn't say anything and sat down and ate my stupid meal. After finishing it, I figured they couldn't make me give the food back, so i gave them a good piece of my mind. I mean, what were they going to do? Send me to bed? I already had to go back in my room anyway. I told them that i thought they were acting completely unrealistic and that i shouldn't have to be subjected to such idiotic punishments. I told them how stupid they were, and that plastic silver-wear can be just as harmful as silver silver-ware. Then, my dad went on some stupid rant about how i better act right or they might have to "put me somewhere". He wanted to send me some kind of institution or something. A completely irrational threat, given the situation. I did not appreciate his tone one bit. Not being able to hold my rage in any longer, I unleashed all my fury and tore the ends off of my plastic silverwear off with my teeth, right in front of them. I took a HUGE handful of Turkey-Ravioli and flung it at both of them. Dad leapt up immediately, but there was a table between us, so he couldn't get ahold of me. I blind-sided him with a Corn-Chop in the face as he leaned over the table. Some of the garlic-butter must have got in his eyes because he reeled back for a second, leaving mom wide open. I proceeded to mash tomato sauce and Turky-Ravioli into her hair and face. Morris started a bark-jump frenzy so I turned my attention to him.

Now don't get me wrong. This wasn't as serious as the Maralin Mansin incident, but I really wanted to teach them a lesson. No sooner did I start to go at Morris, my dad recovered and held me in a really painful arm-hold. I realized he had gotten the better of me so I simply went completely limp and just laid on the ground in a sort of silent-protest. This really seemed to work, and I just laid there until they went to bed. As I cleaned everything up the next-day as a punishment, I just sort of started to calm down and change back into the real-me in the next few weeks.

In conclusion, this was the last time I really tried to use force against my parents. Like I have mentioned before, I really out-grew this gothic-phase of mine. There were a LOT more things that happened during this time-period, but I would much rather try to keep my reviews in the current-times, and not have to relive this dark-time in my life. Hope you guys liked it. I'm not proud of it in any way, just so you know. You can still e-mail me if you want more. As for the plastic silver-ware, I'll still hold my ground and say that it is just as dangerous as the real silver kind. Maybe even more, because people might let their guard down more. Later.

Paula Deen Signature Pantryware Wooden Pie and Cutting Board

I bought this pie board about a month ago. Love it! Works great when rolling out any dough. I use mine when I roll out dough for dumplings. It's large enough, less mess, dough doesn't stick to board and clean up is a breeze. Easy storage too.

This is a sturdy, beautiful, wonderful board for rolling out pie or pizza dough, kneading bread dough, preparing pasta or gnocchi dough and other baking tasks. The size is large and perfect for all my baking needs. My apartment's kitchen counters are too narrow to roll out doughs, so I set this dough board on my dining table. When baking tasks are finished, the board is cleaned, lightly re-oiled and stashed away, saving me much-needed space in my small kitchen too. It's a hefty plank of wood and the quality of mine is top notch (no patchy finishing, splitting or other faults like some other posters have). I'm delighted with this purchase.

This board is NICE! I knew I would like it, but I love it! I haven't rolled out a pie crust on it yet, to see if the measurement that is slightly grooved into the wood, is accurate or not. To me, it won't be a huge deal if it's not. It is bigger then my present board which lacked about an inch on two sides, being large enough to roll a 9" pie crust. I will have no problems with this board. It is big enough to roll out a 10" crust with room to spare! I recommend this one, simply for it's size. Having the measurements slightly engraved into the wood is a plus.

This is a fantastic board! Hand down, fantastic. This works on a couple of levels. This board has the ability to measure out several different size pie crusts, a ruler to roll out different lengths of dough if you need to roll them into ropes and a conversion chart: things like 1/4 Cup converted to Tablespoons, things like that. I love all of these features. In a way, this is two boards in one. I don't use the surface to chop food on, because I don't want to ruin the surface, but I flip it over if I want to chop food. This is why I think it's two boards in one. Fantastic!

I love the board for what it is. I'm not one to endorse a board just because someone famous (Paula Deen) put her name on it. I don't care who makes, it, I just want a board of quality, and that's what this is.

If you're a cook, or know someone who enjoys cooking/baking, then this is a board for you or for them. If you buy this board, I can promise that you won't be sorry. I know I'm not.

this knife completes my block and I love it for cutting small things. It is very sharp and flexible enough to make curved cuts easily, like when you're removing seeds from an apple slice. Indespensible!

I found no problems with this knife. We use for all small cutting and paring. nothing fancy just an every day small knife. works great and goes in the dishwasher. The blade is thicker than other paring knives we own but that hasn't been an issue. The handle is the same as a set of Henckel steak knives we have had for about 12 years and put them in the dishwasher and after several hundred washes have no damage to the handles.
