Shun Ken Onion 7-Piece Knife Set with Bamboo Block

Shun Ken Onion 7-Piece Knife Set with Bamboo BlockI've used a great many knife sets over the years from Knives made in England and the USA to the more expensive knife sets manufactured in the Asian locales. These knives are just about the sharpest, delicately balanced and rigidly manufactured knives I've ever used. The Honing rod is to remove any nicks or slight blemishes on the blade edge but NOT for sharpening. These blades really do keep their edge. In fact, you want to make sure you don't get anything you want to keep on your body in the way of these blades while using them. I've found that a sharp knife IS actually safer to use than a dull blade when preparing any type of a meal. These knives meet the challenge and then some. They are also a very comfortable knife to handle which makes cutting food products quite pleasurable. I would recommend these knives to anybody wanting to step up to a better set of cutlery blades. Barr none.....they are GREAT and very handsome too! They ARE a bit more expensive than the knives you get at K-Mart or Wal-Mart but the product justifies the Price, and then some.

These are by far some of the best knives I have ever owned. I started with a similar set and have now purchased several other Shun Ken Onion knives to accompany it. The sharpening policy was changed recently in 2011 where knives were temporarily sent to a third party site. However as of September 2012 Shun has reinstated the free sharpening policy; you only pay a nominal shipping fee of $5 for the first knife and $2 for each additional knife. I would certainly look at adding a Santoku knife to this set which I have often seen come on sale. If I didn't already have this I would be buying one, one of the best kitchen purchases I have ever made. The serrated utility knife is perfect for cutting fleshy vegetables like tomatoes, the chef knife is my go to knife for general cutting, the bread knife cuts through hard crusts like its butter. Having owned some nice Wusthof and several other lower end Calphalon and other sets I can wholeheartedly recommend these for purchase.

Great Knives. Bamboo block is nice have managed to put some of my other knives in there as well although the angled handles on the Ken Onion style makes them sit a little wonky.

Want Shun Ken Onion 7-Piece Knife Set with Bamboo Block Discount?

We have had our Shun knives for over a year and they have worked great. We sent them to be sharpened and Shun has now outsourced their sharpening to a 3rd party so it cost $70+ to get the knives sharpened. We also had a knife that needed repair work from Shun. It was returned to us severely scratched and we had to pay $20+ in shipping. When I called customer service management at Shun they just said sorry they cannot do anything. We will never by Shun again.

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin Signature 8-Inch Bread Knife

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin Signature 8-Inch Bread Knifeif you like bread and don't cut it 24h hours a day, buy this knive instead of the 4 star version.

why?

the twin select are nice sharp knives

it is a bread knive, you don't use it so often like a chef knive!

the handling is fine

it's cheap

I own 2 twin selects and 4 4 stars. And must say the handling of fourstar is better and you want to have the filet knive or chefs knive from this series, or better some japanese knieve ( way sharper, but hard to maintain, I'm lazy), but for cutting bread, go with this one, the handling is not so important for cutting bread, and it does'nt squeeze my ciabatta or french bread!

I sent this knife to my son who is a baker by profession--he loves this knife. It doesn't mash the bread and cuts through crusty crusts! I higly recommend it to anyone.

If you're not a professional chef, then this is probably the most expensive bread knife you've ever looked at. But if you slice bread (or, say, watermelon) on a daily basis, it will quickly pay for itself. It's sharp, has a good feel, and will last a very long time. If you only slice bread occasionally, then you might want to consider the J.A. Henckels International bread knife instead.

J.K. Adams 19-Inch-by-13-Inch Hickory Wood Heritage Homestead Cutting Board

J.K. Adams 19-Inch-by-13-Inch Hickory Wood Heritage Homestead Cutting BoardI purchased this cutting board as an Amazon "scratch and dent" model that was missing its original packaging. The item arrived packed in the normal Amazon shipping box and was surrounded by plastic. The board itself is beautiful and I have been using it for the past several weeks. It has not warped or cracked or had any other issues. I have been coating it with mineral oil on a weekly (more or less) basis. I suspect this board will last for many years.

The Serrated Cheese Knife

The Serrated Cheese KnifeI have the smaller cheese knife and love how it cuts soft cheeses cleanly.

This one also works beautifully and fully as well as the much more expensive cheese knives I own (and better than some).

In my opinion it is a great buy and very useful and safe to use, even for people who have grip problems.

We have this long serrated knife as well as two of the short ones, and we love using them. They're our go-to knives for cheeses, cheesecake, and even layer cakes.

There's not much to say other than it's a plastic knife. Cheese doesn't ever stick, but you have to put a good amount of force on it. I think a metal one with the ripple design would be amazing, I wouldn't personally recommend this to anyone though.

Works fine. The cheese does not stick to the ceramic. Better than a steel knife for most medium density cheeses such as cheddar, colby, etc.

Wusthof Classic 6-Piece Block Set with Bonus Shear

Wusthof Classic 6-Piece Block Set with Bonus ShearI graduated to this set after using a Henckels Fine Edge set. While this is the standard of the Wusthof line, the Henckels Fine Edge is the low end of Henckels and therefore cannot be compared. However, this set is of excellent quality and performance. The price has gone up since I purchased my set, but I still think this is a good deal. The chef' knife is on the small side, but the block has a few extra slots to expand the collection. My next purchase will probably be a Wusthof Classic Santoku or larger chef's knife.

$219 for a seven piece set of forged steel? with room for more knives? bought seperately on amazon these would have cost me $350 plus. I love the serrated 5 inch knife, perfect for tomatoes. the 4.5 inch utility knife threw me: i have one i bought from a cooking school almost 2 yrs ago. I swear my old one is heavier, and the blade thicker and edged on both sides. the NEW 4.5 inch has less of an edge, is lighter and the blade seems thinner. and in 2 weeks of use it aquired a miniscule bend to the tip, as if it were stamped (tho it's not). the obvious diifference between the new and old is that the new has a little "tic tac toe" graphic on it with the alloy specs underneath. does anyone know what this means? does this indicate a newer generation of the knife? none of the others in the block have this. I'm giving away the new 4.5 and keeping my old

Reversible Mini Bar Cutting Board by TrudeauI really like the reversible feature. Also it has a rubber edge so it does not slide around the counter. In addition, as of yet it shows no knife marks like some cutting boards.

Nancy from Chicago

I purchased one of these at BevMo about a yr ago because it was cute, and now its something I use all the time. Its pretty thick and does great in the dishwasher. Its perfect for things like cutting fruit, garlic and making guacamole. Norpro 300 Garnish Kitchen Tool Set, 5-Piece

Norpro 300 Garnish Kitchen Tool Set, 5-PieceThe only tool in this kit that works well is the crinkle cutter.

The spiral cutter has a fat nylon screw to drive it. It is so thick that it splits carrots. The ring to put your finger in is half as thick as my wedding band so you predrill a carrot with a skewer and then you do two carrots for a sore finger.

The double spiral cutter has but a twist of flat metal before the 8. It won't go anywherre with out lots of hand pressure. The little removable handle that is put on the end isn't shown.

The V saw/knife is light weight steel that one can flex in your hands. If you are patient it will eventually penetrate a pumpkin wall. A good paring knife is far faster.

The knife is tiny with a fraile handle. I threw it out.

The tools either don't work very well, fall apart or cut the user do to cheap manufacturing!

Buy Norpro 300 Garnish Kitchen Tool Set, 5-Piece Now

I've tried using all the tools except the knife. The V-cutter works, but the cut is ragged. Using a knife will make a much cleaner cut. Niether the twin curler or the spiral slicer worked well at all. They are cheap and flimsy and do not work even close to as easy as the DVD makes it look. The screw on the spiral slicer does not pull itself through as it's supposed to do and the hole that you put your finger in to turn it is small and hurts. It just spun in place unless I put pressure on the screw while turning. Then it sliced until the screw was flush with whatever you were slicing and spun in place. The twin curler was extremely difficult to put through potatoes and I got a lot of mushed up twirls. I only gave it one star for the knife.

Chef'n Slicester Cheese Slicer, Apricot

Chef'n Slicester Cheese Slicer, ApricotI like this slicer for several reasons. It is easy to use, safe and creates slices that are even all the way to the bottom. The handle is a comfortable size and shape to grip and feels secure in your hand. The unit will accommodate a cheese block as wide as 3 1/4". The roller is adjustable allowing for three different slice thicknesses, from an 1/8" to 1/4". I found the adjuster a bit hard to turn so I've selected the size I like most and just leave it there most of the time.

There's a spring action built into the cutter that isn't evident when looking at it, but allows the blade to descend all the way to your cutting surface giving an even slice from top to bottom. I've only used the cutter on cheddar and block cheeses of similar firmness so can't speak to its performance on other types, but am very pleased with the slices on those I've tried. The blade is not sharp so might not be good on hard cheeses. The holes in the blade are good for letting each slice fall away rather than sticking to the cutter as happens with some types.

I don't like the spatula/plane type slicers with the slot in them because the slices are too thin to suit me and I can never get them even. I've tried the T shaped slicers with the wire, but get annoyed that I can't get all the way to the bottom of the block so after several slices I have a sort of tongue of cheese left at the base of the block. The cheese cutting boards with the wired lever can work until the wire breaks, but since I'm left handed, they aren't ideal for me.

I'm always trying the latest gadget for cheese slicing and have finally found one I really like. If, like me, you haven't been satisfied with traditional slicers, you may find this is the answer. It sure does a great and consistent job for me.

First off, I will say it is easier to clean than my "board and wire" slicer. Just toss it in the dishwasher. Other than that, this is a great idea and I wanted to like it but it is fundamentally flawed.

First of all it only has three thickness settings, not an infinitely adjustable dial. For me, the thinnest was too thin and the next setting too thick.

It is difficult to cut even slices, especially on the thinnest setting.

You are limited to slices the size of the thin side of supermarket block cheese such as Cabots (about 3 inches max). If you have a bigger chunk or a wedge, or want a bigger slice, forget it.

Overall, too limiting for my use. It has gone in the trash and I've gone back to my "board and wire" cheese cutter.

This product really is perfect for slicing cheese.

This past Sunday it got its first good try out, since we sliced up about 5 blocks of cheese for the superbowl. Using this tool I was very easily able to slice a block in just a couple of seconds and each slice was the exact same size. The cheese slice might be a bit thicker than some people like, but I don't mind a thick piece of cheese. If you press the cheese firmly up against the plastic the metal blade will cut the perfect slice each time.

This cheese slicer is made of plastic and it isn't sturdy at all. The cheese never comes out in a single thickness because the inner arm isn't held in place at all. I bought it hoping it was as handy as it looked, but it was a terrible waste of money.

This is a great cheese slicer for burgers, sandwiches and more. The thinnest setting may produce too thick of slices for some applications. The more I've used it though the more I like it.

KnifeDock: Bamboo In Drawer Knife Block

Knife DockI bought this for my husband who has had several large knives floating around our miscellaneous tools drawer in the kitchen for years. This has a great design which I first discovered in Williams and Sonoma for around $200, and I was ever so happy to find this one here on Amazon for a much fairer price and the exact same design. It works well and solves the loose-knife-in-the-drawer dilemma.

I'm so glad I purchased the Knife Dock because now all my good knives are safely stored in this elegant storage compartment in my drawer. This product is so well thought out because I can put my knives in the Knife Dock in an order that makes sense for me and I can see them so they are easy to get out when I need them. Also, the bamboo is great for our environment.

I bought this as a gift for my parents. Ever since I was a kid, I can remember their knives being just thrown in the drawer and never sharp enough to really even cut butter. This has got to be the best solution I have ever seen. It keeps everything nice and neat, the blades don't hit each other so, no more chipping. Just an awesome product. I just wish it had been around years ago.

Want KnifeDock: Bamboo In Drawer Knife Block Discount?

I have a tiny, tiny kitchen, and I really needed to get my gigantic knife block off my counter. A friend told me about this product, and that it had an excellent price tag when compared to similar products, so I decided to give it a try.

A week into using the Knife Dock, and I can definitely say that it is exactly what I needed. I really love that you can slip the knives into the Knife Dock without fishing around for a correct slot. I can also arrange them in the order I prefer, so that the most used knifes are always within closest reach. The dock fit easily in my kitchen drawer, and helped me free up a huge chunk of counterspace.

The only drawback is that I really wish I had ordered the larger, deluxe model. After using the Knife Dock, I decided I liked having a little extra space around my favorite knives. Since it will accomodate various sizes, I would also love get my steak knives out of my cutlery drawer, keep them protected in the Knife Dock. So, unless you are only storing a small number of knives, I highly recommend ordering the larger model.

Overall, this is a good product and I'm very happy with it!

New Zhen Japanese Large Cleaver Chopping Knife (Slicer) 8" Matt Surface

New Zhen Japanese Large Cleaver Chopping Knife 8' Matt SurfaceI bought mine elsewhere, but was interested to find more information about it here. Mine is the Shiny Bladed version, but otherwise it is the same.

I have found the blade to be too hard and when used only for vegetables on an end grain bamboo board it gets badly damaged simply by normal use. By normal use I mean including cutting a harder vegetable such as Sweet Potato.

I have been adjusting the sharpening angle. It certainly cannot take even the 'normal' 15 degrees of most Japanese Blades. I have it currently at 17 degrees, but still getting damaged too easily! Will it have to go as high as 20 degrees to become stable?

From what I have read about knife steels, VG10 is normally hardened to around 60 61 rockwell. It is very apparent that 63 is just too hard and has become fragile!

In addition to this even when it was at a lower angle it did not feel as sharp as other Oriental Knives I have. This is because the blade is still quite thick just before the bevel.

With regard to using the knife. I frankly prefer my I.O. Shen Oriental Slicer, which is more nimble, you can put your left hand round the blade to support things that need it, it feels super sharp (although it didn't come that way!). It supports a sharpening angle of 13 degrees! This Zhen Chinese Slicer is just a little too big and feels clumsy and certainly not sharp!

To be fair to Zhen. They can make very good knives. This just isn't one of them. I also have a Zhen Damascus Nakiri knife which is simply excellent! It came at a sharpening angle of 11 degrees! I have moved that up to 13 for fear of damage after my experience with this Chinese Slicer. However at 13 degrees the Damascus Nakiri is fine and doesn't tend to get damaged. I suppose this is because it's VG10 central core is only hardened to 60 -61. As it should be!

Lansky Natural Arkansas Sharpening System with Natural Arkansas Coase, Medium and Fine Hones

Lansky Natural Arkansas Sharpening System with Natural Arkansas Coase, Medium and Fine HonesI have used Lansky systems (both standard and diamond) before and disliked the way they tend to leave deep scratches on the metal of the knife edge that are hard to polish off. Some people like that, kind of a microscopic saw blade effect. I prefer a smoother more polished edge.

The Arkansas stones are less aggressive requiring more patience but with a smoother result. The hardest part of using this system, for me, is that I have to use a light touch. I am kind of heavy handed. When done correctly this system works on just the cutting edge of the knife. Almost too small to see with the naked eye.

The best way to do this is to determine the correct angle for the type blade you are working on, set up your equipment and count your strokes. Arkansas stones don't raise much of a detectable burr so counting strokes is the only way to keep your blade balanced.

I also recommend the use of a Lansky Super Sapphire Sharpening Hone for final polishing and a Lansky Super "C" Clamp as a third hand.

If you have any experience sharpening knives this system will put an edge on that you can easily shave with assuming your knife steel is up to it of course. I sharpened a couple of my everyday CRKT knives with it and couldn't be happier. I have been using the knives for some wood carving since I sharpened them and I can still shave the hair off my arm or cut paper like I'm using scissors. I sharpened a couple kitchen knives and cut raw chicken like I was cutting butter. This system is well worth the money the only problem I have had is I needed to replace the hone guide it's made of aluminum and where it makes contact with the blade is pretty thin and I broke it but the replacement was less then 10 bucks maybe just order an extra when buying the kit. All in all this is well worth the money and I will be buying a kit for my brother for Christmas.

Buy Lansky Natural Arkansas Sharpening System with Natural Arkansas Coase, Medium and Fine Hones Now

I've used a Lansky ceramic sharpening system for years and made the switch to the natural Arkansas stone system recently. The difference in edge quality between the two systems is amazing. I am able to get scary sharp edges and always at the preferred angle. Although somewhat messier than ceramic or diamond systems, because you have too keep the stones well oiled during use, it's a minor inconvenience. Additionally, the Universal Mount (which "c-clamps" to a bench or table) is highly recommended to aid in ease of use...

It will take a while to hone a new edge to razor sharp perfection with this system, but nothing I know of will do it better. Well unless you have mad skills with your steady hands. Don't ever use a grinder on any blade you cherish please! Just be careful not to slice through your body parts afterwards and not notice until you feel blood dripping. It is possible perhaps to go too sharp if you get the sapphire stone... Just a warning.

Rada Cutlery Housewarming Gift Set, 3 Piece Boxed Knife Set, Made in USA

Rada Cutlery Housewarming Gift Set, 3 Piece Boxed Knife Set, Made in USA, Aluminum HandlesThese are great little knives and I am planning on adding many more RADA knives to our household. First. I love the fact that they are made right here in the United States by a well-established company. They have a Life-Time guarantee. And they are a GREAT PRODUCT FOR THE MONEY! The blades are as good as any of the Swiss or German manufacturer knives.

Be sure and get the Rada Knife Sharpener when you order. Although the Rada knives have been holding their edges very nicely so far, I have salvaged other knives in our kitchen with their great little easy-to-use sharpener!

I have not placed these in the dishwasher yet. We usually handwash all our cutting knives, so these are no different. But I do not have to worry if the kids are visiting and one or more of these get into the dishwasher inadvertantly (which is why I opted for the black handles instead of the silver ones available).

They do not have "heft" to them, but handle nicely (in my opinion) and cut divinely! This is a great little set for a housewarming or other gift also, so many people make-do with inferior knives that it would be a welcome addition to any home.

Check out the entire Rada line (can you tell I'm hooked on these yet? :-)

They have many individual selections as well as a number of gift sets available. These shipped directly from Amazon, so qualified for SuperSaver Shipping (I'm hooked on Amazon SuperSaver Shipping as well :-). What good is a Life-Time guarantee if the company is half a hemisphere away? BUY USA! And you can't go wrong with these!

I owned a set of these before that left with someone that moved out. I found this set on Amazon and couldn't wait to get them. They are very sharp! I had the previous set for years. They are durable, light weight, and if they do dull over the years they are easily sharpened.

Hamilton Beach 76375 CleanCut Extra-Tall Can Opener, White

Hamilton Beach 76375 CleanCut Extra-Tall Can Opener, WhiteI like this can opener. It is a clean-lined, elegant looking, contemporary machine, that works well. It's tall, like me. I like the clean white color. The removable dishwasher-safe cutting assembly is a nice touch. I've had it for about 2 months now, and the only potential negative I have found so far, is that with some larger size (24 oz. and up) cans, it will tip over forward, due to lack of sufficient base weight. Thus the imperfect 4-star rating.

It will still hold the 24 oz. size cans by itself, if I'm careful when hanging and when removing the can. It operates quietly and cuts cleanly. Again, I am very pleased so far, and recommend it, keeping the above information in mind.

I actually purchased this can opener for my mother. She seems to be "can opener challenged", as far as getting openers to work correctly. Not only is she able to do it with ease, but the Hamilton Beach doesn't make a lound "grinding" sound like most other can openers. She said it's the best can opener she's owned. It was definately a smart purchase!

I actually bought a second one, not because the first broke but because I wanted it as a backup for when the first does break. I have seen others with removable heads and they do not compare to this Hamilton Beach, it is sturdy. I bought my first one at the manufacturers mall in Indiana, I believe it was Michigan City. It was the first electric can opener I ever owned and would not buy one before because I felt without a removable head it would just get very dirty and not clean up very good. That first one I bought February 27th, 2004 and it is still going strong. When I saw this on Amazon, I had to order the backup from Amazon.

J.A. Henckels International Fine Edge Pro 10-Piece East Meets West Block Set

J.A. Henckels International Fine Edge Pro 10-Piece East Meets West Block SetThis is a poor quality line of knives stamped in China. They are not forged, they are poorly ground and they are not honed. I found that the edges were so poorly ground that I could not just hone them prior to use -I would have to regrind the edges.

Henckels does have a very good line of forged, hollow ground and honed knives called the "Henckels International Classic" which cost about twice this "International Fine Edge Pro" set. The "International Classic" set is made in Spain and weighs about 80% of the high end "Henckels Twin Pro S" knives made in Germany for less than half the cost of the German knives.

I returned these knives and bought the "Henckels International Classic" sets instead as gifts.

These knives are pretty good, but they did not blow me away with their craftsmanship. They say to be German Stainless steel, and maybe the steel did come form Germany, but they were made in Thailand, and it shows. The blades are sharp enough to get the job done, and the selection of knives is great. However, the handles are just cheap plastic, and several of blades have a lazy grind near the handles.

Overall, they are good, but if you are hoping to score a great set of knives, I would say spend a little more and get something of better quality. I bought these on sale for $80, and I would say I am satisfied, but I was hoping for more. Definitely do not buy these for more than a hundred dollars.

I've had this knife set for almost a year now and have used it practically every day, yet it's just as beautiful as the day I bought it. One thing I noticed in particular was how much sharper it was right out of the box compared to similar collections I looked at. The bread knife is especially a joy to use; it slices french loaves effortlessly.

The variety of knives means you'll always have the right tool on hand, now matter what comes your way. This also has an added bonus if you share the kitchen with someone, and as such I think it makes an excellent couple's first knife set. For example, while I'm using the 7" santoku to slice squash for a side dish, my girlfriend can use the 5" santoku to slice cucumber for a salad; dinner is done twice as fast.

Pros:

German steel; wonderful wood block; solid, yet comfortable handles; easy to clean; good overall balance and weight.

Cons:

Although it looks like one, don't expect this to perform like a $300 knife set.

Overall:

A steal for $80!

This is overall a nice set of knives, good weight and they don't bend too much. The price is the selling point here, Henckels International means "made in China or Taiwan" not Germany but overall it is a nice set. If you are the person who wants the German name this is not for you but if you want a knife that is sharp and ready to use every day, give them a try.

I purchased this knife set as a Christmas gift for my daughter, and she just loves it. She's pleased with how sharp they are and was absolutely tickled when she carved her rib roast nice and thin. My husband and I opened the package when it arrived and discovered the knives have a nice weight without being too heavy, are well balanced, and the handles are long enough that you can get a good, safe grip
