WMF Manaos 5-Piece Stainless Steel Flatware Place Setting, Service for 1

WMF Manaos 5-Piece Stainless Steel Flatware Place Setting, Service for 1When I received this flatware, I was a little put off by the "made in Korea" stamp after WMF CROMAGNON, a famous trademark from this German company. But after using it for nearly a year now, I am impressed with the durability of the very highly polished surface and the strength of these slender and graceful implements.

This is a classic pattern, but the way it looks on the table is better than in photos because of the way they sit on a flat surface; very graceful. The pieces are a little lighter than my old Oneida, but the Oneida will bend if put to the test and these do not. Constant washing in the dishwasher hasn't dulled the gleaming finish and there are only one or two scratches (when steak knives were thrust blade down into the flatware holder in the dishwasher).

While they are made in Korea, they seem to follow WMF's tradition of quality and great design.

I bought this set to test and see if I was willing to invest in a whole set.

My worry was that they seemed small and light. Once I receive them and tried them for a few days I was very pleased at how they fit in my hands and how well balanced they were. I have since bought an entire set of 8.

I bought this silverware with my wedding money over 11 yrs ago. This is the best silverware. It is made in Korea but will last a lifetime. I am so excited to find more to add to my set.

Henckels Pro S 7 in. Fillet Knife

Henckels Pro S 7 in. Fillet KnifeI have a complete set of Henckels but wanted to add a boning knife and as with all Henckels, this is a great knife. Flexible enought to fillet and bone.

How can you go wrong with a Henckels filet knife? Very flexible. Does a great job on fish. Also very good as a boning knife.

This is an excellent filet knife. If proper care is taken (no dishwasher, no mixing with other utensils), the edge lasts for a long time. Very high quality materials used.

Oneida 13-Pc Side Tang Cutlery Set w/ Block

Oneida 13-Pc Side Tang Cutlery Set w/ BlockI've examined more than 15 knife sets at this price range, both in stores and at home. I like this set the most in the under $100 price range. I'm not a five-star kind of reviewer, but all-in-all, this set deserves it.

Firstly I want to say to the zillions of rust-complainers on the internet, that ALL KNIVES RUST IF YOU TREAT THEM IMPROPERLY. Have some knife-respect and wash & dry knives promptly.

PROS:

1. Quality:

Unlike most sets at this price range, these knives are NOT hollow, light, slippery or flimsy. There is nothing worse than so-called "nice" knives from "good" companies or "respected" celebrity chefs, that STILL feel cheapy.

I previously had the Henckel's International Synergy set ($60), and the feel of this set is much better. For only $12 dollars more this set is on another level. These knives have a HAND-FEEL better than many...and I mean many, high priced sets.

These knives are solid; even heavy, and the blades are nice and long. I'm telling you, if you're someone who respects feel and integrity in his tools, you'll be down with these knives. Way down. Like, lowdown.

2. Handle Length:

For some reason most steak knives have inexplicably short handles. These handles are longer and extend properly into the palm. If you're a steak guy, you know what I mean. Don't ask me to cut my steak with a Kewpie doll knife. The other knives in this set have longer handles as well. I'm sick of dainty handles. Even Chicago Cutlery, with its big macho sounding name, give you the typical stubby handles.

Another advantage of these longer handles, is that when cutting, your index finger rests more on the comfortable bolster, than the sharp back of the blade. These are well thought-out knives.

3. Handle Texture:

Some knives are too slick, some too grippy. I don't know what kind of material the handles are (Onieda calls it POM), but the grip is just right. PERFECT in fact. You don't want rubbery, which feels a bit cheepy-cheesy, and lacks class, and you don't want too slick a steel.

Many knife handles, even expensive ones, are often some kind of hard plastic or graphite. Even top quality plastic feels...well, like plastic. These Oneida's feel nothing like that.

Also some sets have handles that are flat and some that are round; without going into it, I don't care for either. This set strikes the right shape; sort of a curved square.

4. Sharp Enough:

I'm not going to tell you that these blades are the best. This is not an expensive set. They're plenty sharp.

Web reviewers that get all frazzled because their new knives are "DULL!", are most likely starting their cut like a clutz. Yes, I've experienced un-sharp knives right out of the box too...these ain't them.

These blades are straight-edged (smooth), not serrated (jagged). Personally I like smooth edged like these. If you keep it sharp, it slices like silk, and your guests will exclaim, "wow, THAT'S a steak knife". Serrated edges are OK, but when they get dull they start to tear at meat, rather than slice it smooth and sexy like.

Serrated are also harder to sharpen.

5. Blade Strength:

The blades are a bit stronger than most. They are not flimsy, which is a common problem at this range.

Mind you, they are not super rigid like some $200+ set, but they will NOT embarrass you. These are high carbon stainless steel after all.

I test blades for strength and rigidity by gripping the handle with one hand, and pinching the blade tip with the other hand, then flexing the blade from side to side, observing the amount of wiggle. Again, these pass the wiggle test just fine.

6. Blade Length:

All but one of the knives complies with recommended lengths. Often you will get a short santoku knife. Not here, it is the full 7 inches. The chef's knife is a big mother. Put the chef's knife in one hand and the santoku in the other and go to war.

7. Value:

For quality, weighty knives like this, it's a good deal indeed.

9. Appearances:

It looks like a proper knife block set. Others may like something prettier. The trim on the block is a bit course maybe. As for the knives, I like that they are rivetless, with the steel traveling seamlessly from the blade to the bolster and on through the handle. Sleek and solid looking. And no place for gunk to hide.

Also the block has a small footprint, so if you have a small counter it works out.

Knife block slots are labelled. Kinda neat. One tends to get sloppy with slots. This keeps you honest.

10. No Rust:

So far no rust, and I've no reason to think it will. If they do start to rust, even though I care for them properly, I will be certain to update this review in BIG FAT LETTERS.

CONS:

1. By tradition and expert recommendation, pairing knives should be 3.5 to 4 inches. This one is only 3 inches. Bummer. That half-inch makes a difference. A good pairing knife may be the most important knife in a kitchen, so this was a real shortcoming on Oneida's part. I have a favorite paring knife, so I just substituted mine for theirs in the pairing slot. But still, one shouldn't have too. It's a waste of a tool and some bucks. I guess it's OK for grapes, whatever.

2. No sharpening steel. Truly, any self-respecting block set (like this one certainly is) SHOULD have a sharpening steel. It's just what's done. It's kinda like selling a pair of shoes without the laces.

3. Block: The steak knife slots are narrowly aligned, so the steak knives are bunched together rather untidily. Knives should line up military straight. Well, as mentioned before, the block itself lacks a bit of fit & finish.

The block is at a medium to slight angle. To access the longer knives you may have to pull it out from under a cabinet. But it will STORE under all but the most low slung cabinetry. It could have been a bit more angled.

4. Kitchen shears (scissors): Personally I don't like the look of scissors in my knife block. Scissor's should be kept in your wife's knitting drawer. I'd rather Oneida have supplied another type of knife instead of these shears. No big deal. I just stuck another pairing knife in the shears slot, and put the shears in a drawer. Now I'm all cool again.

SUMMARY:

This is simply the best knife block set at this price range, period.

I bought this and not only was the black box cracked and broken, I had to go through several ways for them to replace it for me. Today while trying to cut some tillamook cheese the blad broke in half, i have never experience something this poorly made for how expensive it is.

Chroma ST-G Knife Sharpening Guide Rails

Chroma ST-G Knife Sharpening Guide RailsI purchased these guides to sharpen KAI Seki Magoroku series knives. I have never used a water stone before, so I thought these guide rails were necessary. I followed the directions on the package for attaching and using these guide rails, but their corners were leaving deep scratches on the water stone, so I stopped using them after just a few passes. I ended up sharpening knives without any guide rails, and, I think that I did a pretty good job.

Nice tool for accurately sharpening Japanese and other chef knives. Actually works very well by maintaining a 15 degree angle, which is very hard to do by hand. Be sure you know how to sharpen Japanese knives before using, pressure points during sharpening is important. Search youtube for helpful hints.

these guides really help put a sharper edge on the knife because it creates consistency, they do rub against the stone but you aim for putting pressure more on the knife edge than the guide, for the price it is a great item to help improve your sharpening ability through angle consistency

Victorinox Cutlery 10-Inch Wavy/Straight Edge Sandwich Knife, Black Fibrox Handle

Victorinox Cutlery 10-Inch Wavy/Straight Edge Sandwich Knife, Black Fibrox HandleThis knife is worth every cent that it cost. I have used this in my restaurant and it has been put through the paces. This knife is a great everyday use tool. It slices, dices, chops and does pretty much anything you need it to do. The one that I have used I have had for nearly a year. It has earned the nickname "The Beast" because it does everything. The serrated edge has lost its edge a bit in the past year but this knife again is being used much more than anything that you may do in your home.

OK, here it is. I had 3 ginsu knives that all came up missing after I moved. Thats why I ordered 2 more of them. I have had them since the 1980s. Seen them at the state fair being demonstrated. Believe me they have performed exactly as they claimed they would. I have sliced frozen meat with them many times and yes, they will slice a thin tomato perfectly after slicing the frozen meat. I am 66 years old and will have one till I die. They are worth every penny I have spent on them.

We still have our original Ginsu set from the 80's which includes this slicer. I Think it has sliced 1,798,326 slices of bread, 965,231 slices of tomatoe and 3,569,212 slices of celery. It still looks like new, is sharp and gets plenty of use. Who would have thunk that this gimmicky, inexpensive knife was for real back then?... I didn't.

John Boos 9-Inch Square Maple Edge Grain Chopping Block with FeetI wanted a good solid cutting board that wasn't to big. This was just what I wanted. It is just the right size for my counter and even though I have a black, white and red kitchen with granite, this board looks great.

Farberware Pro Forged 7-Inch Santoku with Clear Sheath

Farberware Pro Forged 7-Inch Santoku with Clear SheathI was hoping this would replace my $13 Kitchen Aid chef's knife. This knife is poorly made and dull as can be. I'm going to wait until I can purchase a high quality sontoku knife I suggest you do the same, reader.

I like the balance of this knife, and the curve is the right shape. Add to the balance a nice handle shape and the feel is great. The steel is a little too hard, though, making sharpening more difficult; but not impossible.

My two complaints are these: First, the blade is too thick so maintaining sharpness is difficult, and the blade has to be held at a very slight angle for fine slicing. Second, the handle, thought comfortable, is of plastic, which lends a cheapness to this knife.

Misono Swedish Carbon Steel Sujihiki 9.4"(24cm) - Right

Misono Swedish Carbon Steel Sujihiki 9.4'(24cm) - RightFor starters, it has a dragon on it. It came out of the box very sharp. I work in a kitchen, and it is my "go to knife". It has just enough knuckle clearance to chop with. A slicer that dices, how cool is that?(sujihiki means slicer.) This knife will rust, so keep it dry. Misono also has stainless steel knives, if you don't want to deal with the carbon steel. Did I tell you that it has a dragon on it?

Gourmet Settings Diva 20-Piece Stainless Steel Flatware Set, Service for 4Excellent steel, heavy duty, beautiful design, and a pristine finish.

This flatware is simply amazing. The steel is of the highest quality, is very heavy duty and well made.

We just ordered our second set to make a full setting of 8.

Gourmet Settings products are excellent and reasonably priced. The weight of the product is great and doesn't feel too light (I don't like cheap feeling flatware).

Diva is the perfect design for either a modern, traditional, casual or formal place setting. It sits in your hand nicely and is easy to use.

I purchased a four-piece setting a year and a half ago and recently ordered another four-piece setting because it is a great product. I have never had any problems with rusting and would highly recommend Gourmet Settings products to anyone.

I really love the finish, quality and weight, but the sizes are enormous! It's hard to tell a difference between the fork sizes. It's been a while since I bought flatware, so I don't know if this is 'the new size' everyone is putting out. I don't like a fork that feels like the size of a pitch fork.

Browne Foodservice 573324 Stainless Steel Standard Disher with Red Handle, 1-3/4-Ounce, Size 24This is the size disher you need for normal muffins. One scoop = one muffin. Works great with thicker batters. Goes into the dishwasher. The sprocket is sturdier than the one I had on my old one that looked like this: Norpro Stainless Steel Scoop, 50mm (3-Tablespoon).

People call these things ice cream scoopers. The reason I had to buy this was because somebody used my old one on rock-hard Haagen Daz. NO. NO. NO. It would probably work with softened ice cream, but that never happens at my house. I've threatened people with bodily harm if they try my new toy on ice cream.

I'll definitely replace my smaller scooper with this brand when it finally breaks.

Calphalon Contemporary 8-Inch Chef's Knife

Calphalon Contemporary 8-Inch Chef's KnifeI didn't know how much I needed this knife until I had it. This is my first "good" knife, and boy does it make a difference. For a long time I had heard that one good knife can be your most useful tool in the kitchen, and it is the truth! I used to be a kitchen gadget collector, but I use this knife for a lot of the things that I used to have gadgets for (frees up a lot of space in my kitchen!) I also invested in a sharpener, and try to sharpen the knife every three or four uses.

The balance of this knife is great, and it fits my hand perfectly. It was a little heavier than I anticipated, but I got used to that very quickly. This knife has replaced most of my other cheap knives, and I don't miss them a bit.

This knife is made from the same top-quality German steel used in Solingen kitchenware, but is ground and manufactured in China. This is a perfect combination, as the material is top-quality. If you want a mirror finish, spend twice as much for a Trident Wusthof...but you won't be getting a better knife, just a better looking one.

Buy Calphalon Contemporary 8-Inch Chef's Knife Now

I was fortunate enough to pick this knife up as a "Gold Box" offering. Though the finish of the blade isn't as smooth and shiny as I might have expected from a company such as Calphalon, the overall quality of the knife is really exceptional, especially for the price. As you may have expected, this knife is crafted in a Chinese factory, and they never seem to "buff" their metal to quite the same degree as products from western origin. But I must say, I really love this knife. It's mass and blade curvature make it equally effective for cleaving apart a chicken or rocking through herbs to mince them. It comes with a very sharp edge, which is easily maintained by using a steel or keen to re-burnish it from time to time. The ONLY thing I'm slightly dissapointed about is the fact that the blade is just a little too thick to fit into the slot on my current knife holder block, so it spends a lot of time flat on the counter. I plan to make a new holder to house it along with my other 4" and 6" versions from the same Calphalon collection, which I have since purchased at full Amazon price--I was that impressed.

After I bought my Calphalon cookware I knew I would continue to buy their products because they are very good quality, especially for the price. I know their cookware & kitchen utensils are good, but I wasn't sure about their cutlery (some companies make quality cookware but poor quality knives). So I decided to take a chance & get the 8" Chef's knife and I am so glad I did! I think this knife is beautiful & the perfect weight. I really like the handle & it feels nice and balanced in my hand. It didn't come out of the box quite as sharp as I'd like it to be, but it's definitely sharp enough. I can't wait to get more knives & the maple block! This knife is great for everyday use!!

I was surprised at how well this knife performed. I have had no problems with it at all. It slices through things with ease. The handle is also great. The rubber on the handle prevents it from slipping, and makes the knife more comfortable. I have not tried any of the higher end knives like Wusthof or henckels so I am not sure how this performs compared to them.

Fleur de Lys 6 Laguiole Rosewood handle knives

Fleur de Lys 6 Laguiole Rosewood handle knivesFirst of all: a true laguiole knife has three distinctive features: 1) the bumble bee on the top, 2) the letter L enclosed in a circle near the heel of the blade and 3) the rivets in the handle are in the shape of a cross. These knives are not laguiole knives though they are made to look like them. That said, these knives are decent. The rosewood handles are attractive though it lacks any burl and knots; the wood is pretty basic and plain -higher end knives use wood with more variety and grain. These are pretty much the straight grain running from blade to butt of the handle. The steel blade is average, reasonably straight, sharp and polished. I thought these were fine until I happen to handle a set of higher end steak knives in a store over Christmas. The polish and shine on the $200 set of knives I looked at is far greater and more reflective than these.

Overall, these are fine if you 1) need a lot of knives or 2) don't really want to spend the bucks to get a more decorative set or 3) don't know where Laguiole is and don't care! In my case, I got what I paid for and what I wanted. My comments are basically to say if you want high end knives, these are not for you.

I bought the knives after reading that a chef who used them personally recommended them. The knives are elegant and very sharp.

We were disappointed to see the "Made in China" sticker on the box and feel the very light weight of these knives compared to those that we bought in Thiers, France. The design is similar but they are a dramatically inferior product. They are probably only somewhat overpriced for what they are, but they're not Laguiole knives.

I had pretty much the same experience as Kecia Kesler. The knife case was coming part on two sides of the bottom edges. The craftsmanship was so so. And originally I was led to believe that the product was French made, but when I received the item, there was a made in China sticker on it. I am returning the item, I don't think it's worth the ~$100 I paid for it.

International Silver Smithfield 20-Piece Flatware Set

International Silver Smithfield 20-Piece Flatware SetI have gotten this set of flatware based on the picture and on the only review that gave a 5 star. I can say that the product picture is much better looking than the actual product. I bought a set of Oneida Tuscany 20-Piece Flatware 2-3 years ago which is a couple bucks more expensive than this one. It is, however, much better in quality. I am quite disappointed with this set but I suppose with this price, I cannot expect TOO much (the spoons and forks are thin and can easily be bent). Hence I gave it a 3 star instead of 1.
