RSVP International Onion Goggles

RSVP International Onion Goggles, PinkWell, I used to look absolutely ridiculous, and now I look slightly less ridiculous. A la "Diva," an '80s French cult film with a guy who chopped onions wearing a mask and snorkel, I used to tromp into the kitchen with mine because my eyes bothered me so much when I'd chop onions. Enter the Onion Goggles! And yes, they really DO work. You do NOT have to have your nose covered, as I'd once believed. So far I've bought a pair for my son, myself, my brother, and a friend. The only downside is that they don't fit over eyeglasses, but since I'm not terribly farsighted this isn't a problem for me. If your eyes are sensitive to onion fumes, try these. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Some people have remarked that these onion goggles are a cheap rip-off. I recently received a pair of these from my wishlist as a birthday gift. The quality seems very good to me. I think that, perhaps, RSVP must have changed manufacturers for a while during 07 to 08, realized they were crap, and found a better manufacturer. I have not seen glasses from prior to 07 to be able to compare today's goggles with them, but I do know that the product I received is of a good quality.

The glasses are shaped like wrap-around sunglasses, curved to fit the shape of the face. Behind the frame that surrounds the lenses is a light foam material that creates a seal with your face. This foam has a layer of material (a little like a very thin black polyester flannel) that covers the part of the foam that touches your skin. This material makes the foam more comfortable, as well as strengthening the foam's edge--which without the support looks like it could easily tear. There are no ventilation holes cut into the foam.

Just like many wrap-around sunglasses, the fit of these onion-goggles is pretty snug. If you have a large head (like I do), don't expect to be wearing these for a long period of time (like for dry eyes.) While the fit is snug on me, (23" circumference head, size large hat) I find that I can wear them for at least a half an hour without discomfort--plenty of time to chop a lot of onions.

As the foam creates a seal between the nose and eyes, I did not have a problem with fogging. The foam seems porous enough that some circulation of humidity could occur. Interestingly, though, this did not seem to allow the onion fumes in.

The fumes. I could still smell the onions. The fumes still irritated my sinuses. But interestingly, the fumes did not affect my eyes. While I could feel a little burn in my nose, I had none of the tears (and consequently none of the runny nose) of cutting onions.

Fact: As long as they create a seal against your face, they work.

The glasses come in a soft plastic glasses case, which you can keep them in for storage. The case has a magnetic closure, which is nice when your hands are covered with meatloaf and you don't want to grab hard at the plastic to struggle with a snap.

Why did I give them only 4 stars? According to the Vision Council of America, 64% of adult Americans wear glasses. There is absolutely no way to fit a pair of glasses beneath these onion goggles. If you have a pair of contacts you can switch into--great! But good luck taking the contacts out after you've been cutting onions. It's clear that it would be difficult to create a good seal against onion fumes around a pair of glasses, but if ski-goggle manufacturers can do it, couldn't the onion goggle people? They could offer it as a separate product.

My prescription is around -2.0. I had no trouble cutting onions without my glasses on. But if your vision is worse, do a test drive at home, cutting onions without your glasses on, before you buy these.

I have not tested these goggles to see how easy they are to clean. I suspect soap and water and a gentle touch with a towel.

Last note: my cousin, who rides motorcycles, was at my birthday party. She commented that these looked almost exactly like motorcycle glasses. If you have ski goggles, motorcycle goggles, or a gas mask, give them a try. (Don't laugh--my dad was in the military and my mom used to use his old gas mask.)

These goggles really work.....I put them on then chop onions...no tears! And, they actually improve my vision a little, so I would highly recommend to people sensitive to onions.

These are worthless. Too narrow to fit my face. It's not flexible and does not conform to your shape of face. You really are better off buying a cheap pair of swimming googles or ski googles, I wish I had.

I haven't used these to cut onions. I actually bought them for my girlfriend to wear to Burning Man. These are great for the desert and far superior to regular sunglasses for keeping dust out of your eyes (although, they don't block the sun, if that's a concern).

They could fit just a bit more snugly, and i've seen larger ones elsewhere that probably provide better protection, but these are worth considering for Burning Man aficionados or, I suppose, people that cut a lot of onions.

Five stars if you're cutting onions at Burning Man.

Nambe Cheese Block with Knife and Spreader

Nambe Cheese Block with Knife and SpreaderThis item is an amazing work of art. The picture doesn't do it justice. It is large enough for a couple of wedges of my favorite cheese (St. Andre) with crackers and grapes. The wood is very heavy and beautiful. The serving knife and spreader are magnetized to stay in place. They are stainless steel but gleam like silver. I keep this out on my antique bar cart because I love to look at it :) This would make a memorable wedding gift.

This Cheese Block is a work of art (like many Nambe products). It is even more beautiful and impressive in person than in the picture. We've had it about five years and it always gets rave comments when we serve cheese to company. It is ideally suited for cheese and wine tasting parties.

I wasn't sure when I first looked at the knife and spreader if they would be practical or just decorative but they work fine. The magnets securely hold them in place so there is no problems finding them when you get the block out each time.

I got this for a gift and they loved it. I am thinking about getting one for myself too. The build quality is excellent and it is actually very heavy. The tools are great and stay in place just fine. The wood looks great, is quite thick and seems like one solid piece. It is definitely nice enough to leave out all the time.

I have had this knife since March of 2012 and have used it 5 days a week at a sushi restaurant. I love the balance and feel of this blade and it lasts me through a shift or two until I have to sharpen. I will say that the steel feels softer and the tip of my blade broke whilst sharpening on a 1000 grit whetstone though I re-shaped it easily. Still like this blade in my arsenal!

J.A. Henckels International Forged Synergy 7-Inch Hollow Edge Santoku

J.A. Henckels International Forged Synergy 7-Inch Hollow Edge SantokuThis knife has grantons (hollow spots) ground on only one side of the blade -the side that shows in the packaging. The flat side sticks like any non-granton blade. The blade is also a bit thick for a santoku, more like a 7-inch forged chefs knife.

Very sharp knife with a nice large handle which I like. Problem is that the hollow edge is on only one side and is on the Lt. side which makes it useless if you are Rt. Handed. Overall the knife is sturdy and comfortable for my large hands. I don't feel like I have to rest my fingers ontop of the blade at and the the handle curves nicely for a comfortable grip.

Buy J.A. Henckels International Forged Synergy 7-Inch Hollow Edge Santoku Now

Considering the high expectations I had from this knife, I feel completely let down. Nowhere does it say the hollow edge is only on one side, and that too the side appropriate for left handers. This is the same side that is visible in the packaging and the other side is flat a fact that does not leave a very good impression of the company. Don't buy unless you are left handed. Otherwise, the knife is sharp, and thus the 2 star rating.

This is the first and only knife I bought in my entire life. I have developed a passion for cooking during the last 6 months, and I hated the knifes that we had at home, because they weren't good enough. So I decided to go with this henckels. It's a good beginning. Something more expensive for someone that's just starting to cook, wouldn't be appropriate. This knife is sharp! It is a little heavy, but you get use to it.

I couldn't be any happier... the best $28 I have invested on my way to become the first Colombian Iron Chef!

Droll little banana slicers. Perfect for quick, even slicing "nanas" for cereal, baking, or for making "Banana Chips" a la chocolate syrup and chopped nut drizzle on top. Maybe even adults can join in the fun. Eliminates the "slice, slice, slice, slice, slice, slice, slice, slice, slice, syndrome when slicing bananas. Bought mine at a yard sale.

At first I thought this was a joke, but in fact it is not. Despite the forced, adolescent groan humor on other reviews here, this actually is a useful product. At a restaurant supply store I once bought a similar device with straight wire slicing cutters and frame to perfectly and evenly slice an entire stick of butter in one downward push to make many patties of butter in one second! I actually use it when entertaining.

Similarly, I like banana slices in my cereal...one push down, all sliced in one second...no more slice, slice, slice, slice, etc., etc. Then toss the Slicer in the dishwasher, top rack, and forget it. Very efficient.

Looks like fun to me. Not just for kids. And, if you have more than one child, two is better. A stainless model would be even better, with stainless wires, even though it would obviously cost more.

I purchased this set as a surprise for my husband. He loves it. Everything is made of sturdy steel. Nothing feels flimsy. The set is very attractive and classy looking. I especially like the ice tongs. I have had other tongs that are awkward and difficult to use. Not these. There are teeth on the tongs for grabbing the ice. They are comfortable to use. We have received many compliments on this set. I am purchasing another set for a friend whose ice tongs I broke during our last barbeque. I recommend this set very much. The only thing I do not like about this set, a very small thing, is the lid to the ice bucket cannot be removed.

Messermeister Meridian Elite 6-Inch Kullenschliff Chefs Knife

Messermeister Meridian Elite 6-Inch Kullenschliff Chefs KnifeThis knife is my favorite to use in my kitchen for most cutting jobs. The only problem is I do not have a block to keep it in since it does not fit in the block I have from another set. I was hoping to discard some of my older knives and replace the space with this new one. I looked into a block specifically from this company but I do not like the combinations offered. I keep it in my top drawer in the plastic sheath it came in. Even though it isn't as convenient as having it on top of my counter in a block, I do not hesitate to get it out since it is such a sharp and handy slicing and chopping knife.

Hamilton Beach 74250 Electric Carving Knife

Hamilton Beach 74250 Electric Carving KnifeI purchased this knife to replace a Hamilton Beach electric with swivel blades and a carry type grip with pull up trigger that I have used for many years. I could no longer find that style so went with the "wand" style now sold by almost everyone. This knife set included a guide for bread slicing.

First, this knife was very effective cutting our Turkey for Xmas. No issues on meat. The knife was less effective on the softer items and turned our fresh baked loaf of bread into stuffing material. So +1 for meat and -1 for bread.

Second, this knife is EXTREMELY uncomfortable to use more than seconds at a time. The trigger is awkward and hard to hold in the "on" position in the best of circumstances. When the unit is slippery (e.g. from juices on the meat being carved) it slides back in the hand making operation of the switch almost impossible for someone with adult male hands. With large carving tasks, like the above mentioned Turkey, I need to periodically set the unit down to allow the pain to subside before resuming. The design is ergonomically challenged.

The blades clean-up very well in the dishwasher. The cord is long enough that the knife can be used for either side of the cutting board. This knife would have received 4 stars if it wasn't so difficult to use comfortably. And really, why do you buy and electric knife? A good alternative (albeit more $$) would have been the Hoffritz HZEK1 Electric Knife, but Amazon has apparently discontinued that brand.

This carving set is great for all types of meat...very sharp and clean cuts. I love the speed and cleanliness of the cuts. I wish I could find another like it, as the first one was lent out, and never returned to me. All-in-all a super carving knife set. AAA+++

Unica Flatware Collection 'Lillian' 36-Piece Sleek-Black Handle, Vibro Finish Flatware SetThis silverware set works pretty well so far. It comes with some stirrer spoons (as pictured) which are not used, but other than that, you pay for only what you need.

Victorinox 12-Inch Granton Edge Slicing Knife with Fibrox Handle

Victorinox 12-Inch Granton Edge Slicing Knife with Fibrox HandleFor years I've used an electric knife to slice turkey, roasts, ham, etc. No matter how well I sharpen a carving or chef's knife, I've been unable to avoid sawing back and forth to complete a cut, or worse, having the meat just tear apart as I cut. And thin, deli-style slices are just a dream, even with a sharp electric knife.

This slicer has cured all that. It's long enough to complete a breast cut on a 30-lb turkey in one stroke, and wide enough to make that stroke in a dead-straight line with little or no guidance from me. Thin ham slices for sandwiches are no problem at all. And it's sharp enough cut through the tenderest meat as if through warm butter. The small grooves on the blade seem to keep slices from sticking, making for an effortless cut.

I bought this knife on the basis of a review in Cook's Illustrated. You can spend more, or less, but I don't think you can buy a better slicer.

We too purchased this knife after a reading a review about in Cooks Illustrated and heeding the advice of Food Network's Alton Brown.

We were convinced that we wanted a knife that sliced paper thin and in one stroke, did not wander during the cut and thus produce non uniform slices, and did not leave cutting ridges on the face of our meat.

We roasted prime rib and set about carving it. Our first impression was that it was too flexible and too thin. The first few slices looked novice like. We were also disappointed that we could not seem to slice one piece of roast in one motion as demonstrated by Alton.

However, when we fished out our 10" chefs knife for comparison, we immediately appreciated the difference. The chefs knife could not cut slices as thinly, consistently, or as cleanly as the Victorinox. We then compared it to our Henckles knife that is part of a carving set we received as gift. The Henckles is 8" of forged steel and beautifully finished, but it left us wanting more flexibility and four more inches of blade. The Victorinox abundantly provides both.

As we practiced, we became proficient. We found we could slice cleanly despite having to reciprocate the knife, we could slice uniformly, and most importantly, we could duplicate the deli sheer thin widths we like so much.

Potential buyers desiring these characteristics will not be disappointed

I've been wanting a large granton slicer for quite awhile...but never could quite see paying the cost of a forged blade.

I am the proud owner of a set of Wustof Trident knives. I bought a bulk piece of NY Strip Steaks (about 2-1/2' long) and decided to cut it into steaks, run it thru my Food Saver 2 steaks at a time and freeze them. I first tried my super whiz bang Wustof Chef's Knife (which I sharpened first). Hmmmmmm. Wasn't doing the job. Then I tried my Wustof Slicing Knife (which I also sharpened). Hmmmmmmmm. Wasn't doing the job, either! Last shot: My Victorinox Slicing Knife (didn't sharpen it). WOW! I cut 15 steaks off the rack or strip or whatever it was with ease. It held its edge, felt good in my hand, stayed relatively straight through the cut (not having done this before, the first 2 steaks were a bit irregular) and worked like a champ!! I won't give up my other knives, but I'm more than overjoyed at the smooth job this knife did. It did a great job on the Thanksgiving Turkey, too. Well worth the money. Oh, BTW, read about this knife on Cooks Illustrated. Great reference!!

I use this knife to slice beef brisket when I am competing in BBQ competitions. I need those slices to be absolutely perfect. No saw marks, completely equal and uniform, and no tearouts. This knife is unbelievably sharp and the length allows me to do a slice in one long pull. The hollows in the blade keep the meat from 'sticking' to the blade and messing up the cut. I love this knife and it was money very well spent.

We first saw a knife similar to this in Southern California. We bought one there and later (now in Northern California) began to wish we had another. I searched on line and found this knife which is a different brand. I use it almost every day. As indicated, it is particularly good for tomatoes and cheese. There are a variety of other uses. Wusthof Grand Prix II 2-Piece Hollow-Ground Asian Knife Set

Wusthof Grand Prix II 2-Piece Hollow-Ground Asian Knife SetI'm a young college student who works at a restaurant as a waiter. Like many young people, I one day got a fleeting aspiration that would probably go away within a couple of weeks. I wanted to be an awesome cook, so the first thing I did was ask the chef at my restaurant what tools I needed to start. He told me a good kitchen knife is THE essential tool of the chef. He recommended I go to Williams Sonoma and try out every knife possible but warned me that chef knives cost close to $100 dollars each. Whoa! He also said that Santoku blades are very popular these days because they're extremely versatile and feel good in your hands (something about balance).

Nonetheless, I went to Williams-Sonoma the next day and tried out the Henkels, Wustof Classic, Wustof Grand Prix, Wustof Grand Prix 2, Globals, and Shuns. I ultimately chose the Wustof Grand Prix 2 because of the perfect balance in the knife. It felt perfect. The handle was much grippier than the others, extremely light, but not as thin as the Globals (which I thought might lead to a blister), or with the unnatural offset handle of the Shun (Left handers actually feel that it works perfectly I'm a righty like the majority of people). I'm extremely paranoid of cutting myself ever since my mom cut herself pretty bad and after handling that particular knife, I was confident I would never cut myself. I eventually purchased it on Amazon with in an asian knife set (paring knife + santoku).

When I finally used it for the first time, I seriously could not believe how quickly I could cut. I always thought it was skill that the chefs at my workplace would use to dice things, slice meats, or chop veggies. Was I ever wrong! Any idiot using a knife this sharp and this balanced could cut like a master. I was cutting slices of apples so incredibly thin I started laughing! They were so thin, I could see through them! Tomatoes cut with no effort. After purchasing this knife, I started buying more and more kitchen supplies to match that same euphoria.

A year has passed, and for my recent birthday, my friends got me a gift certificate to Williams Sonoma. I am known amongst my friends as the guy who can cook an amazing meal. I owe it all to this knife! I'm very lazy, and if I took the same time cutting stuff as a I used to before I owned this knife, I simply would not cook for myself let alone others. I take this knife with me wherever I cook I refuse to use other people's knives. Even at work, I hate trying out my coworkers knives. They feel unnatural. I've even gotten comments when I cut up fruit for friends. They literally hear it come out of the knife block and look to see what made that sweet shimmering noise.

I rank this as #4 on my list of top 10 things I own. The first 3 being my North Face Goretex Jacket to get me through the winter walking to classes in Michigan. The second being my Computer so I can buy stuff and write reviews here. The third being my waterproof sneakers (again for the winter). I place this knife before my mp3 player, my stereo, my TV, my xbox, my Playstation 2, and all my Calphalon pans put together. I might even go so far as to put it in front of my absolutely adorable toy maltese-poodle mix (he's related to Jessica Simpson's dog). This review may seem a little far-fetched, but I am simply in love with my knife.

Pros Extremely good construction, Perfect Balance, Good Grip, Easy to Clean, Comes presharpened, Haven't needed to resharpen or even hone since I've owned it, looks good, grooves prevent food from sticking, able to cut extremely thin, Handle allows multiple grips to be used.

Cons Not dishwashable, my girlfriend left it in water overnight to soak, left permanent watermarks on my blade. Grr. Not cheap! Have no clue how to claim lifetime warranty, Tang is only 3/4 length (but also makes the knife lighter).

Try out as many knives before you purchase. Only 1 type will feel "right" to you. But if you think like me (safety first) then you'll love this knife.

Edit I wrote this review on just the Santoku Knife. The review for the additional paring knife is below.

The 3 1/2 inch paring knife could have been better had it not had that teardrop design. A more traditional paring knife with the pointy tip would have been much more useful. You have no clue how frustrating it is to cut dill with this teardrop style paring knife as opposed to a traditional paring knife. Also, the Grand Prix II grip doesn't work as effectively for the smaller knife. It seems a bit more slippery than the Classic line when it comes to the paring knife.

But still awesome knife set overall.

This set is just 20 dollars more for the pairing knife, than the one without. You can not buy a Wusthof knife for 20 dollars. I watched Rachael Ray for too long on the Food Channel cutting easily at her veggies. These knives are some of the best quality knives you can buy. The specially made blade does enable a quick, accurate cut.

The grip and the weight of these knives give them an excellent balance that simply is impossible to be beat. These two knives have quickly become my most used knives for everyday. I would highly recommend these knives if you are looking to start or add to your knive collection.

Have tried lot's of different knives and this is by far the best! Super sharp and doesn't have a thick blade, which I love! Super smooth cut!

Bought these knives for my wife and she says the larger knife she would rate a 5 and the little knife she would rate a 3, hence the 4-star rating. The larger knife seems to hold an edge longer than the smaller blade, but that's probably due to the different usage of each knife. Have been careful to wash/dry after each use, so no rust yet. Overall, very happy with the purchase.

Ginsu Bagel Slicer

Ginsu Bagel SlicerLift the blade guard (yes, blade guard). Insert and center a bagel of your choice. Close the translucent guard and gently, firmly (you don't need a hekuva lot of pressure, since the blade is razor sharp) draw the handle down until it comes to rest at the bottom of the guard.

Open and remove your perfectly cut bagel-two perfect halves. No more "20%/80% or just plain, crooked cuts!

Furthermore the unit allows small ones or elderly folks with an appreciation of bagels to cut their own without the risk of also cutting themselves in the process.

Boy, if only we had an "avocado slicer," we'd have it made!

Reasonable, attractive construction of plastic and steel. Looks nice on the counter.

MIU France Stainless Steel Magnetic Knife Bar

MIU France Stainless Steel Magnetic Knife Bar, 20-InchI ordered two of these, and just put them up today. After reading other reviews of magnetic knife holders, it's clear that the main complaints are 1) the magnet is either too strong or not strong enough, and 2) some of them are just too flimsy.

This knife holder is perfect in every respect. Both the body and the mounting brackets are made from very heavy-gage stainless steel. It is easy to mount, easy to clean, and the magnet seems to be just the right strength, which is critically important. Either too strong or too weak would be flat-out dangerous!

Figure that the 15-inch model will hold 6 to 8 knives, depending on the size of the knives and how far apart you like them.

I have an incredibly small kitchen that's just finishing a remodeling two years in the making. Since no walls were knocked out, utilizing every square inch of space is still a priority, and this knife rack does it in style.

But since the kitchen's so small, you might be wondering why I went for the bigger knife rack. That's cause the place I intended to put it is on a cabinet that butts up against the cooktop. The cabinet's the traditional 24 inches wide, so this rack centered perfectly in that space, and enabled me to toss the counterspace-eating knife block.

Stainless steel's a big component in this remodel, so this knife rack fits in perfectly. I put it up myself, so let me warn you it's HEAVY. I drilled two holes at the right height, but for the life of me, I couldn't screw in the rack towards the backsplash. A hint you might helpful is to use masking or painters tape to tack up the center of it until you can drive the screws in (leave the easier screw out a bit so you have room to maneuver; when the back screw is in, you can tighten both.) See? All those hours watching home improvement shows weren't for naught!

The one thing I found a bit puzzling was the "S" design in the rack. I couldn't tell from the pictures if that was a recessed or raised design. Well, if you were wondering, let me tell you it's a cut-out S. At first I thought if it was raised, I'd only have enough room to store the knives between the raised design, but because it's just an incised figure, you can put as many knives on this thing as you can jam! (There are two magnets, the long, thin, horizontal strips that frame the S design.)

The knives are held firmly, but it's easy to remove them with little effort. I know some folks seem to be having a problem with it. I'm scarcely Superman, and I have no difficulty pulling them from the rack without beheading anyone.

If you have the space, go for the 20 incher. You'll save $20 over Amazon's suggested retail, and it's a better buy than the smaller model.

I highly recommend it, esp. if you want a design statement that adds to the appeal and space demands of a small kitchen.

Contrary to other information you'll find here, this knife bar is not too heavy, nor are the magnets anything but perfectly powered.

The mounting hardware provided will safely mount the holder to any horizontal surface, even drywall. All you need is a drill and a screwdriver. It takes about five minutes.

The magnets are strong, but not too strong. Weak hands can always slide a knife off instead of the brute force horizontal yanking method.

I purchased two of these and mounted them under my cabinets. One wouldn't be large enough to store all of my metallic goodies. In addition to knives and cleavers, I also stick accessories like my peeler on there. The knife bar is so stylish and its stored items so conveniently located that there's no notion of clutter.

These are a must-have for any kitchen.

My knives are a crucial part of my kitchen and I want only the best for them, so I wanted to go with a magnetic strip.

Hiding your knives in a drawer is a shame, can be dangerous if they're just free floating in there, and can also dull them if they bang around with other items. Not good

Keeping knife blocks on your counter eats up counter space and is just bulky. Many times I have to guess which knife is in which slot too, and if I have knifes that don't fit in the block, or more knives...I end up with knives in the drawer or multiple blocks. Not good.

My knives are beautiful and I love having them displayed out in the open. It also makes for easy retrieval. I hung this strip up right up above where I work, so when I need to switch from my Chef's Knife to a Paring knife, I just reach up, grab the handle and there it is! Very easy, no having to fumble to open a drawer or guess which knife it is in the knife block.

Of all the magnetic strips I've seen, this one is the largest, heavy, durable, great styling, and has the best quality. My only want for it is to be bigger...although, if it were any longer, I would have a hard time finding a place to mount it, so I think just buying another one would be the way to go.

It doesn't have to just be for knives either. I have many steel items that I think would be perfect mounted on this strip. The possibilities are endless!

Bottom line, I would definitely recommend a magnetic strip as a way to store knives. I would definitely recommend this strip over the others if you care about quality and looks.

This item is extremely well built, sturdy and very easily mounted, with easy removal should it be necessary for moving, remodeling, etc. Extremely good with holding lOTS of knives of all sizes. For lack of horizontal space to mount, I had to mount it vertically, and attach knives on an angle even with this unusual mounting, the knives are held very securely and do not shift or slip. I am VERY pleased with this product.
