Bakertowne Thick & Thin Cheese Slicer

Bakertowne Thick & Thin Cheese SlicerI LOVE this item. It makes perfect, uniform cheese slices something I have never been able to accomplish with a knife, cheese plane, or wire cutter attached to a board. I bought one at my local Kitchen Outlet over a decade ago and fell in love. The only downside is that it's a little flimsy with a life expectancy of about one year. It's so inexpensive that I didn't mind buying a new one once a year. But then my local kitchen outlet stopped carrying it.

I bought a similar item from a different manufacturer that cost about twice as much and it broke while I was cutting my first slice of cheese! Don't settle for anything less than the original Thick & Thin Cheese Slicer! It's the best :)

This will be my annual birthday present to myself. I am so happy to find this product again.

Small, lightweight and inexpensive. Works perfectly. If a string should break at some point in the future I'll just buy another one. Has been used on soft, medium and hard cheeses with no problems so far. Does not suffer from "adjustment slip" (becaue it is not adjustable) but you are given the choice between thick and thin. Would highly reccommend. I bought a very nice professional slicer but this is the one I use most often!

This was a great little cheese slicer until it snapped in two during normal use. Spend a little more and get something that's better quality-the plastic is pretty thin.

We're on our third slicer, as the wire stretches. Each one lasts about 6 months, but I love them and am back for more. Stand a 2lb loaf of Oregon cheese on end and slice horizontally, supporting the wire as you bring it from the far side of the cheese toward you. It makes quick work of a tricky job, allowing you to buy better quality cheese at a lower price than pre-sliced cheeses.

Fox Run Oyster Knife

Fox Run Oyster KnifeI used this item for several months without any major problems. The length of the blade occationaly caused difficulty in cutting the top sphinter muscle, but otherwise was adequate for the task. I recently obtained some oysters which were significantly larger than those previously purchased. Unfortunately, in trying to open the larger oysters, the blade snapped off. It was necessary for me to revert back to the old tool commonaly used by casual oyster shuckers; a large flat bladed screwdriver. I would recommend this knife, with a caveaut, to only use it when shucking small to medium oysters.

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin 22-Slot Knife Storage Block

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin 22-Slot Knife Storage BlockYes it is just a large block of wood with slots cut in, but if you have a large collection of Henckel knives and outgrew your block or have a few random knives you would like to store together with your set, then this block is the way to go. Looks good on the counter, knives go in on their side, room for a medium cleaver, steel, and shears, as well as 8 steak knives.

I love my new knife block. I read many reviews and looked a different types for a long time before I decided on this particular model. I have a wonderful collection of Cutco knives (the best, in my opinion) and wanted to get all of them in one block. This fits the bill. The slots are large enough to accommodate my largest butcher knives and the Santoku knives and I have room for all my steak knives in the lower section. The block is well-finished and not so large that it takes up too much counter space.

Finally a knife block the holds all my knives. This block is sturdy and holds all knives from a set plus the few extras all cooks have laying around.

This J.A. Henckels Twin 22-Slot Knife Storage Block is the perfect addition for any kitchen. Are you tired of hunting through the drawer to find the knife you want? The Henckels knife storage block is the perfect way to keep your knives in order. The slots are large enough for the knife to easily side in and out of the block. There's space for your meat fork, your sharpening steel and even your bone scissors. This block is easy to clean and has rubber pegs on the bottom to stop it from sliding across the counter when you're inserting or removing items. I wouldn't be with out mine.

Wusthof Culinar 8-Inch Bread Knife

Wusthof Culinar 8-Inch Bread KnifeThere are really two main competitors in the high-end mainstream kitchen knife market: Henckels and Wusthof. Those who have used both usually have a preference. My preference (and therefore bias you should know about) is for the Wusthofs.

The Wusthof Culinar line is an all stainless steel look, rather than a black handle. Although the picture and some descriptions want you to think this is a single piece knife, be advised that the hand is a separate piece of stainless steel molded onto the tang. I personally prefer the handle of the Grand Prix and Classic, because the grip is surer for me, but this is, to some extent, a matter of personal preference. This series "looks" more professional to some (like a Viking stove).

This particular model, the 8 inch bread knife, is a great knife. Many people think tomatoes are the hardest food items to clearly cut. I think bread is much more difficult; but this knife makes the task seem easy. My only quibble is the length. I find the 9 inch bread knife to be a better length for most loaves of bread.

I recommend the Wusthof 8" bread knife, but I would try out the 8 inch and the 9 inch to see which you prefer.

Winco Heavy Duty Cleaver with Wooden Handle

Winco Heavy Duty Cleaver with Wooden HandleI use this cleaver in processing pigs, sheep and goats on the farm. I needed a sharp and heavy cleaver that would crack through bone quickly. This one sure does that job and hasn't failed me yet. I agree with the other reviewer that the handle has a little play to it, but while that is annoying it doesn't affect the knife in use. So why three stars? Its first day on the job we used it to help divide a hog carcass in half. We used the cleaver to knock the skull in two no easy job, and the cleaver did just fine but afterwords the edge of the blade was nicked and pocked and very dull. We sharpened it back up and still use it, but it's a clear sign that this is a low grade steel that won't hold an edge or take any real abuse.

I'll keep using it, and sharpening it, and using it, and sharpening it, since there is plenty of steel there, and we don't need it but 3-4 times a year. If you just need it for specialized jobs, like I do, it's fine. If you're looking for a stout knife for daily abuse, this isn't it.

(December 1, 2011: I just recently added a photo to the Amazon description page.)

This product -Heavy Duty Meat Cleaver 8" Blade -is labeled as model "KC-301" below the name "Winco." A sticker says it's made in China.

There are pluses and minuses to this meat cleaver.

On the plus side, when new the blade is deadly sharp. It literally cuts paper in a stroke. It has no trouble slicing into a tomato. That won't last long, of course, after several minutes of whacking into Beaver pelts and June bugs and Wallaby carcasses and then afterWard often whamping into the presumably hard surface beneath. But it is unreasonable to expect any blade to stand up to such a beating and stay sharp enough to slice a tomato. When it gets too dull you can sharpen it, which means regrinding, and until then you can hone it every so often, which means using a butcher's steel to realign the very edge of the edge.

Here, in case you believe it, is what the Wikipedia article says: "A knife-sharp edge on a [meat] cleaver is undesirable because it would quickly become more blunt than it if were less sharp but sturdier to begin with. The grind of Eastern Asian kitchen knives is 15-18 degrees, and for most Western kitchen knives it is 20-22°. But for a meat cleaver it is even blunter, more like 25°."

Also on the plus side, this meat cleaver weighs 15-7/8 ounces, which I'd pretty much call one pound, which is heavy, which is just what I wanted for hacking through bones. Also also, if you don't own a meat tenderizer you can flip this cleaver over and beat your meat with the totally blunt far upper corner (which you can do with any other cleaver for that matter).

That said, this is by no means a high-quality meat cleaver.

One defect, at least on my exact one, is that at least two of the three rivets are a bit loose. When you hold it by the handle in the usual way and waggle it, you can feel the tang of the blade swing back and forth a tiny bit inside the two grips.

Which leads to my second complaint, which is that there's room between the grips and the tang for food and bacteria and molds and viruses and other ick to slip into and propagate and later end up in your turkey stock or your acorn squash ice cream. (This would be true even if the rivets weren't loose.) Any such crud that gets in there is going to be impossible to scrub away. The only solution (ha) I've thought of is to swoosh the handle around vigorously in a solution of vinegar and water, or maybe even bleach and water, and then pray (ha ha).

There's a total of about 22 inches of linear space where such crud can get into (and, more importantly, out of) the grip. This is simply a design defect, unless it's a gross manufacturing defect. Either way, for this I subtract 1 star.

My third complaint is about the grind. You would expect the top of the grind line of a high-quality cleaver to exactly parallel the sharp edge, but it doesn't. And in two places you can see where there's a third grind line, which is indisputably a mistake. Either this was sharpened on a machine that was adjusted wrong or, much more likely, it was sharpened by a human that was careless.

Because of the cross-contamination problem I rate this product at 4 stars. If it cost $30 or more I'd rate it at 2 stars, but it's only 15 bucks.

So you can buy two.

P.S. Did anyone get the Beaver, June bug, Wallaby, afterWard joke?

This cleaver is of best quality. The construction is solid and heavy. The blade is 8 inches long and sharp....so sharp that when I unpacked it I cut my finger open before I knew it but my clumsiness is too blame for that. Dont pay 100 dollars for the "namebrands" when you can get this great cleaver for less than 20 dollars(including shipping).

This cleaver is a great balance between heft and value. It goes about its business, in your hand, with clinical precision and power to spare. Cuts are very clean, and the nicely balanced blade makes short work of any bone which might challenge a lesser cleaver. I could barely contain my glee as my prep time was literally 'cut' in half, and in so doing, made a mundane task almost enjoyable. I would recommend this product to any chef worth his/her salt...the price is an added bonus.

OXO Good Grips 2-Piece Peeler/Parer Set

OXO Good Grips 2-Piece Peeler/Parer SetI am consistently amazed at the high quality and low price of all the OXO kitchen products. Though I like heftier knives, this peeler is the best. The only caveat is that it takes a little getting used to the "direction of peel" towards you, but once you do get used to it (a couple of carrots should suffice) you'll never go back to the classic at your mother's house.

I bought this set when I first moved into my apartment, as I've been a fan of the Good Grips products for a while now. This set is absolutely indespensible, as I use these tools almost every day.

Peeler: This is wonderful for peeling potatoes, as the easy-to-grip handle and swivel blade help you to comfortably maneuver around bumpy and slippery surfaces.

Knife: Since purchasing the set 4 months ago, my knife has stayed incredibly sharp and is able to cut through everything from crunchy carrots to smooshy tomatoes.

Here's why the set didn't get the "5" rating: The pair should be hand washed and *not* put in the dishwasher. The knife got a tad rusty after running it through a cycle. Note: This was easy to correct with a Brillo pad and a little elbow grease.

However, I don't think you should let this "diswasher drama" sway you from purchasing this set, as the benefits *far* outweigh the limitations.

The paring knife has proved quite good, but I cannot find strong enough terms to express my disappointment in the peeler. I can't understand all the recommendations. It requires an undue amount of pressure to peel at all, digs chunks out of the vegetable and doesn't peel smoothly. It feels as though I've used a rather dull knife instead of a highly recommended kitchen tool. Even my small crew of teenage peelers have opted to use our old one from the grocery store. It has no curved edge to remove eyes and although the handle is very comfortable, it is otherwise useless.

Hi! I bought this set soon after I began having problems with my hands about four years ago. I thank my lucky stars that I did! I later discovered I had rheumatoid arthritis, so these kitchen tools have been a Godsend. The peeler especially has made it possible for me to be able to cook many things I had simply given up on previously. I had experienced so much pain before due to peelers which required too much force to use, partly due to dull blades and rigid blade formats. This peeler is so sharp, and is so clever with its freely swiveling motion, that it peels smoothly and swiftly; if anything, one almost has to pay attention not to remove too much when peeling because it *is* so effortless! The paring knife is splendid also. For me, with my arthritis, the handles on both tools are really beautifully designed, and enable me to cook even on some of my worst days. I always handwash my utensils and have never had any problems with rust, as some reviewers have mentioned, and both utensils have remained very sharp all these years. These were the first OXO tools I bought, and I was so enamored that I have since bought more. I would probably buy the whole OXO line if I were rich enough! I am pleased that somebody thought of people with arthritis --and good design in general --at long last.

I have had numerous peelers and all of them would hurt my hand after peeling a few potatoes. Not anymore because I bought an OXO Good Grip. This is hands down the best peeler I've ever owned. I can now peel a whole bag of potatoes without pain in my hands. I would recommend this brand to anyone.

Global GS-10 - 5 1/2 inch, 14cm Cheese Knife

Global GS-10 - 5 1/2 inch, 14cm Cheese KnifeThe idea of a cheese knife with "holes" in the blade is to reduce the friction as one slices cheese, thus ensuring consistant slices, without the cheese crumbling or falling apart. This Global knife delivers admirabley to the task. Indeed, the design best fits hard cheeses, and Global have (imho) the best knife for this, period. Our old "stamped" knife bends and is awkward (dangerous) on hard cheeses.

For soft cheeses, this may not be the best knife, probably a knife such as one would use for pate would be best. But, it is the penultimate for soft cheeses, and the best all round cheese knife my wife and I have ever experienced. We never regret the purchase.

This beautiful Global knife comprises all distinctiveness of that great brand, including the price though ...

It is great for semi-hard and hard cheeses (although I would not strongly recommend it for Parmesan cheese, despite that it worked fine for me, since Wustohof parmesan cheese knife is appreciably more efficient for that purpose). Don't pay much attention on those that tell You advices such as that other [less expensive] imitations with similar shape would do the same job (I tried several of those prior I got Global). On the other hand, don't expect this knife to do a good job for soft cheeses.

Global knifes need a tad amount of attention and care, and in return beside superb design and balance (of course, which is an individual thing) are very thankful and durable. So if You are not cheese addict and prepared to give this knife care that it needs, then rather buy something else (cheaper that You can toast and replace after short time) but of course, You won't know what You are missing ...

Buy Global GS-10 - 5 1/2 inch, 14cm Cheese Knife Now

This knife is great for hard cheeses, I can cut them without the slices crumbling to pieces. It feels very comfortable and sturdy in my hand like my other Global knife. The blade has a serrated edge so you will not be able to sharpen it easily, but if you only use it for cheese, it should stay sharp for a long time. This is another beautiful Global knife.

This is a great knife for hard and soft cheeses. It has a good grip and comfortable design. My wife was skeptic about it but when she used it she immediately told me to order an additional one as a gift for her parents because they are cheese lovers too. Some people complain that the knife will make a second cut after the middle holes pass through but this will not happen if you make a straight cut. Strong knife, it doesn't bend easily, I have even cut through old Parmigianos, still you have to apply some force but it will feel very secure.

It cuts hard cheese like asiago and soft like brie or fontina. I use four knife in my kitchen. My chef's, vegetable, cheese and paring knife (ALL GLOBAL). I am definately not a cheese connoisseur but I will say this will be the last cheese knife I might ever need to buy.

Farberware 3-Piece Wood Cutting Board Set

Farberware 3-Piece Wood Cutting Board SetWhat happens when you take razor sharp, tempered, high-carbon steel knives to wood? Well duh, the knives cut into the woood. I'm so tired of hearing complaints about wooden cutting boards showing knife marks. I read one review where the writer complained that they would probably have to replace the board after a few years. This is natural. If you don't want to see cut marks or replace your cutting board ever, get a slab of marble. It's bad for your knives, but these people seem not to care about that.

This Farberware 3-piece cutting board set is great. For the price, it's fantastic. These are the only cutting boards your average home cook should need. They are reversable (though only one side has grooves) and offer three various, useful sizes. The large is about the size of two sheets of paper side by side; big enough yet still managable in the sink to wash. The medium is about the size of one sheet of paper. The small is about the size of your avarage hardcover book. All are about as thick as the handles of your knives.

They are hard wood providing a nice cutting surface. The wood is well oiled to help protect it from water damage. After a while, your bound to have many cut marks, but so what? Take a look at the price again. You buy cutting boards so they take the damage, not your knives (or your counter).

The boards I received were all smooth and straight (not warped). None have any signs of cracking and seem well made. They are easily worth two or three times the price amazon.com sells them for.

If this seems like a ridiculous deal for three hardwood cutting boards, well it is. Only problem is two of the boards have split since I bought the set six months ago. I don't know if the wood is not cured correctly or what, but I have certainly not abused these cutting boards, nor have I subjected them to extreme temps or soaked them in water.

If I had it to do over again, I would get one good cutting board that would last, as these will have to be replace as they continue to split.

[added 4/3/07]

Just wanted to update with a note that for $10 I bought a huge heavy-duty wooden cutting board at a certain Swedish superstore. Buy the mineral oil that comes with it and treat it once a yearhaven't had any issues with it.

Buy Farberware 3-Piece Wood Cutting Board Set Now

I think it must be clear from the cost (and other reviews) that these are not what one would call "quality" cutting boards. Some of the flaws right out of the box were:

1. The largest had splinters (actually shavings half attached to the surface which would create an irregular surface once I'd pull it off.) The smaller ones have some irregularities too.

2. Also, they're coated with some sort of a material so that they don't absorb oil when trying to oil them initially. Dunno if that's good or bad, though.

I was not under any illusions when I bought them, but I'm giving them four stars because they serve the purpose I had in mind for them. I actually use them under flexi-plastic cutting sheets. Why use both together? Well, the flexi sheets let me transport the cut food to the stove (or wherever) easily, are cheap enough to replace periodically, and are dishwasher safe. The wood cutting board provides a surface underneath the flexi-sheet that is not as hard as my counter, thus protecting my knives' edge. And as I don't use the wood surface directly, I don't have to expose it to moisture etc. Sometimes stuff does trickle down to it, but that's different from cutting ON it, and can be taken care of by wiping it off. Hopefully, this will prevent the board from splitting apart, and the way I use them, small cracks won't bother me too much.

As an aside, I find the smallest board too small to cut anything on, so I usually use it as a trivet.

I read through all the reviews for this item before purchasing it. Since the positives outweigh the negatives I went for it. I have only used the big wood board three times and each time I washed it and dried it before placing it on a drying rack. Yesterday, I went to use the board and saw that it had warped and there was a huge crack running though the middle. It has been less than 3 weeks since I purchased this item and it is going straight back to Amazon. Go for the poly boards, skip the wood

Shun Classic Left-Handed 9-Inch Stainless-Steel Bread KnifeMy wife is a pastry chef and bread maker. She is left handed and it made a perfect gift. She looks that she is spoiled with a beautifully made knife and her coworkers all lust over it!

This bread knife feels solid. The blade does not flex like my old bread knife. The knife is balanced and sharp. I cut easily through light fluffy bread as well as through heavy crusty sour dough breads. I did not expect such a difference between my old serrated edge bread knife and this Shun Kershaw Bread knife. I like the left-handed version. The knife also looks great. Presto Bread Slicing Guide

Presto Bread Slicing GuideI own one and bought it used. This is one of the best bread slicing guides ever made and is unfortunately out of production. The inclined angle helps keep the bread firmly lodged and the crumb catcher works. There are a few other brands made today, but they're all crumby. (Heh.)

When I use this guide to slice bread, I get uniform slices. Using an electric knife to slice the bread, makes it a quick job.

This item is no longer available new. It is solid and works very well. You need a knife with a 9 to 10 in blade for the best outcome.

The angled pitch helps to keep the loaves in place. Just enough flexibility of the guides to make it easier to slice. The grooves go past the bottom of the loaf, so you can cut it all of the way through. The thickness is very appropriate for bread machine breads. The alternate colors make it (a little) easier to make thicker slices, for light/airy breads, or Texas Toast. Hint If you want slices with an "in-between" thickness, you can put your hand between the loaf and the end plate to make your slices 1.5 thickness (versus 1 or 2), then take your hand away to let it slide back for the next slice, and keep alternating.

Global GSF-15 - 3 inch, 8cm Peeling Knife

Global GSF-15 - 3 inch, 8cm Peeling KnifeHaving been a Sabatier fan all my life, I was a little skeptical when I saw some of my chefs using these Japanese knives, but having handled them I decided to try one at home. I love this knife. It is beautifully balanced and takes an edge easily. I use it all the time and will get around to getting some larger ones when I can afford them! Right now, this is my all purpose knife for all veg prep and sundry general slicing and paring. It is no good for chopping, though they make plenty that are. Highly recommended.

I bought this on a whim to finish my global collection.Quality is the same as all global knives but I agree with previous reviewer that the handle is too flat which make it awkward to use.

If the handle had more heft it would have been a great paring knife. Global skimped on this knife

Mercer Genesis Collection 10-Inch Granton Carving Knife

Mercer Genesis Collection 10-Inch Granton Carving KnifeThe price is roughly the same price as a basic JA Henckels carving knife, but it's arguably better than a Zwillings or Wusthof in performance. It's sharper than my Wusthof Classic, and its handle, which is thick and made of a tacky rubber, is far gripper than the Grand Prix II's, which is a resin and narrower. The balancing points on Mercers (I also have the 10" Chef) are on the bolster itself, while my other blades tend to be either handle (JA Henckels 7" Santoku) or blade (Wusthof Classic 8" Chef's Hollow edge) heavy; I feel more in control with these. The hollow edges are very deep and raw meats easily come off the blade. I wish they didn't use so much labelling on it though.

Outside of getting a sashimi knife, I can't imagine a better knife to make thin, precise slices of meat. I'd recommend Genesis knives for narrow ones like carving or bread knives, and their Renaissance collection for wider knives like Chef's knives and Santokus. That way, the bolster will not be an issue.

Tom Douglas by Pinzon Kai 3-1/2-Inch Stainless-Steel Paring Knife

Tom Douglas by Pinzon Kai 3-1/2-Inch Stainless-Steel Paring KnifeCustomer review from the Amazon Vine Program This is a nice paring knife. The co-polymer handle doesn't slip even when wet and feels really well balanced in the hand. It's not just a piece of plastic; there is a bolster and some weight to it.

The blade did not pass the paper cutting test straight out of the box but most knives need honing or sharpening before the first cut. I peeled carrots and potatoes before honing and it cut well. Did less well on a tomato but did manage to core it without mashing it. After I honed the blade on my knife steel (this is not sharpening), the peeling was even easier and created thin strips. After I gave the knife a few passes through my electric knife sharpener, it passed the paper cutting test easily and could make very thin peels. It sliced through a tomato easily. I'm impressed!

My everyday paring knife is a Victorinox with a hard polymer handle. It is also a sharp knife but I think this Pinzon will be my new favorite because of the handle. It's very comfortable and doesn't slip, leading to less fatigue.

I use this knife sharpener (see link below). It's pretty much foolproof and puts a good edge on my knives. I still take my knives to a professional sharpener at least once a year; this keeps my blades sharp in the meantime.

Chef's Choice 120 Diamond Hone 3-Stage Professional Knife Sharpener, Platinum

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program We use our 3-1/2" paring knife far more than any other knife (though that may be our cooking style). The short blade makes easy and quick work of light chopping and slicing.

This Pinzon 3-1/2" paring knife is a reasonable option if you're looking for an inexpensive knife, and appreciate the convenience of shopping with Amazon. But there are a lot of knives to choose from, and if it's something you use often, you may want to look at some alternatives to find the best match for your needs.

BLADE: The blade arrived sharp and cut easily. Care has clearly been taken in making the blade it tapers both to the sharp edge and to the tip. It's hard to tell if it has a tang (that is, if the steel of the knife blade extends into the handle). Knives with tangs are stronger and last a lot longer. The rivet hole detail at the base of the handle suggests it does, and you'd expect a knife from KAI would have a tang.

HANDLE: The handle feels secure, with the slip-resistant finish and design. The sides are somewhat flat, so if you're looking for a fully rounded design consider something else. By the way, the handle has some brown color accents, see the photos for a better look at the design.

BALANCE: The knife feels reasonably balanced, though it's a light knife so there isn't the same sort of balance and weight in your hand that a heavier knife would have.

TIP: One tip (pun sort of intended) about knives like this never use the tip of a knife like this for anything but the lightest work, if that. Steel that's best at holding a sharp edge isn't flexible, and it's easy to break the tip.

OTHER KNIVES TO CONSIDER: There are a lot of options for knives, to suit various budgets, preferences for handles, and so on:

For an inexpensive knife, the Wüsthof Gourmet 3-Inch Paring Knife is from their budget line.

The Oxo line of products emphasize the handles and grips, if that's a top priority for you; one example is the Oxo Good Grips Professional 4-Inch Paring Knife.

The Calphalon Contemporary knives are a little more expensive, but to me they feel better made and have more comfortable handles.

And if you enjoy a quality knife, consider the Wüsthof Classic 3-1/2-Inch Paring Knife. The flat-sided handles don't work well for everyone, but many enjoy using them. From time to time you can find knife sets with special pricing.

Many people would say that it isn't necessary to get a high quality forged knife for the small sizes like a paring knife. And there's some advantage to having a knife that isn't so precious that you have to worry about it. So the less expensive knives will be fine for lots of people.

But you may still enjoy the quality and feel of a knife. So think about what suits your tastes and budget, you'll be using this knife a lot!

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program This 3 1/2 inch stainless-steel paring knife is just what you need for everyday kitchen work. It is utilitarian, well balanced, and the handle seems to have been designed with ergonomics in mind. Further, I did not find it slipped when my hands were wet. The blade is quite sturdy; I found it a bit thicker than I personally like. However, it was not so thick as to cause me to dislike using the knife.

Right out of the package, I found the knife did an adequate job slicing mushrooms, chopping potatoes, cucumbers, and carrots. However, the knife was not sharp enough to slice through a cherry tomato skin without applying more pressure than I do with my Rada knives. As a result, the tomato was a bit squashed when I was done slicing.

Since I don't expect to have to sharpen a knife on the first use, I didn't. That was a mistake as it affected my evaluation of this product. However, I do like that the blade can be sharpened and will give it a few passes through my sharpener. Based on other's comments, this should take care of the sharpness issue. February 11, 2010 follow-up sharpening greatly improved the functionality of this knife. Once sharpened, using my little Rada sharpener, the knife easily sliced through tomato skin without my having to use undue pressure.

My favorite thing about this knife is that it is dishwasher safe. Had the blade done a good job on tomato skin right out of the package, I probably would have rated it as a five star product because it can be put in the dishwasher. If you are looking for a nice, reasonably priced knife for everyday kitchen work, then you should consider purchasing this product. I recommend sharpening it before use you will then have a five star knife for a price that won't break the bank.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Positives:

The knife sliced through tomatoes. Which is a feat for an all purpose paring knife.

The rubber handle works great, in terms of gripping while wet.

Its light (disconcertingly so, to some extent.)

It comes out of the box very sharp.

Its a great price from a great company (KAI=Kershaw.)

Negatives:

Its very thin; to the point there is a touch of bend to the blade.

The handle is rubber, and the blade clearly does not have a full tang, making it very blade heavy.

Unknowns:

The slight serrations in the blade that allowed it to so deftly cut through tomatoes means that as the knife dulls and gets re-sharpened it will most likely lose this impressive ability, but because of its thinness will probably still be a great little slicer. Its also easy to sharpen, which probably means it will dull quickly if you dont know how to properly care for a such a fine edge (glass cutting board, scraping, dishwashing, etc.)

Overall:

This is a lot of knife for this price. Perfect for someone who wants something better than you can find at most Discount stores but doesn't want to break the bank. It doesn't look nearly as nice as my Ken Onion designs and doesn't balance as well, but I'd wager its better than 90% of kitchen knives you'd find in most peoples kitchens and nearly all you'd find at this price point. (A note aside to steel junkies: Nowhere on the blade does it say anything other than High Carbon Steel, but I'd wager these are AUS6A, based on the Kershaw Site.)

I was so pleased with my Pinzon Santoku Knife that I bought one of these as a companion. It has the same wonderful sharp Kai blade, and comfortable Pinzon grippy handle.

While the knife is my first choice out of the knife rack for cutting fruits and prepping vegetables, however, I quickly learned I couldn't use it for meat prep. The handle lets you maintain your grip when the knife is wet, but not when it's greasy. When parting out a chicken or trimming a roast the handle gets slippery, and, since the guard is quite shallow, my hand has a tendency to slip forward toward the blade (not a good thing at all).

I still think the knife is a great deal for its quality (especially since it has the KAI lifetime re-sharpening guarantee). It's worth buying just for cutting apples and celery and tofu. But don't get it for meat.

This bar tool set serves its purpose. It makes a good appearance and and is of decent quality. This tool set is good for someone who will use it casually; I would not suggest it for someone who would be using it on a regular basis. While the faux-leather is visually appealing, I can see it wearing from use.
