Just received this set in the mail. First Impression is that it's even more beautiful than it looked on line. Outset seems to be a cut above the rest of the field in grilling tools. I actually only got the whole three piece set because it was the same price, on sale, as the tongs alone. Was going to just get a set of Xtra long OXO stainless tongs, and saw the Outset Jackson's, which have same lockable design, but the sweet rosewood and extra length. So far so good, I'll update after I use them for a while as to the quality. I think I might just grab a few more sets of these to give as gifts for discerning grillers on my list.

I thought they were very eye appealing, but was disapointed with their ability to pick up things. They do not meet at the bottom to grab things small, they move from side to side also adding to the problem of lifting things up, I would not recommend them for these reasons.

This is a very amazing knife. It's design purpose was for fish but I enjoy using it to peal tomatoes and other fruit. The weight, length and balance of this knife make it a must have for the serious cook. Like all good knifed, this is a lifetime investment.

I have loved the look of these knives since I spotted them in a french shop in New Orleans. I ordered these from Amazon, but wound up finding a set cheaper at Crate & Barrel. The handles are plastic, not heavy, so I'm a bit unsure as to the quality. I'll have to wait and see how they hold up.

These are great. I used to keep all my siverplate, serving pieces, and napkin rings in a silverware box that was so big it had to be put in a closet where it quickly got stacked with "stuff" or put up too high to get without a stepstool. It seemed more bother than it was worth to use. Now all my pieces are close by and fit neatly in a smaller plasic container that fits in the cupboard with the good china. It was so easy to set the table for my last dinner party with the "good stuff". I especially like that I can pull out just the number of place settings that I need without having to bring out the entire service. I haven't had them long enough to see how well they prevent tarnish, but they definitely are convenient and keep the silverplate from getting scratched.

My only complaint is the price. For 12 place settings of silver, & the wraps at $10. ea., makes the purchase over $120. just for wraps. Otherwise, an excellent product.

Purchased two of these flannel flatware holders. They will serve the purpose we had in mind, keeping our knives, forks and spoons from making a racket as we drive down the road in our class B. Somehow, I had pictured them to be a thicker material, even though the advertisement mad no such claim. Ours arrives somewhat damaged, thanks to the post office sorting machine, but still quite useable.

Shun 11-Slot Bamboo Block

Shun 11-Slot Bamboo BlockNo one ends up with just a couple of good Japanese Kitchen knives. I had just bought several expensive knives and my old block just wouldn't fit the larger blades of the Japanese knives. This one was made for the wider knives. Mine holds a couple of gyutos, a Banno Bunka, Nakiri, 2 pettys, and I measured it and it will house my new Hiromoto Sujihiki slicer, the longest one.

I like the slanted angle and the arrangement of the slots makes for easy entry and removal without other knives gettng in the way.

Good price at about $60 as I believe it sold for about $90, although I dont think I would buy it at that price.

The best feature is that it will hold 4 WIDE CHEF type knives....most others don't

And the HORIZONTAL layout is easier on the blades...won't dull them.

The other one I have is vertical and the blade road cuts against the block when you withdraw the knife.

As I slowly replace my old Sabatiers with new Shuns I sprung for their block. I've actually never owned a "knife block" before so I have nothing to compare this little bamboo beaut to but I am impressed by its ability to both sit on a counter and hold knives of different sizes all at the same time. Mine came with a discreet Shun logo on a brushed aluminum plate pressed onto the lovely bamboo. Some block!

I first purchased a J.A. Henckels International 10-Slot Knife Storage Block from Amazon to hold my 4 Shun products: honing steel, 8'' chef's knife, 6'' chef's knife, and a 5 1/2 inch Santoku. Well, I was unpleasantly surprised when I found that I could not fit those three Shun knives because of the very small holes in the Henckels block. So, I reluctantly spent three times the price of the Henckel block and ordered the Shun 11-Slot Bamboo Block. The reason I give it only 3 stars is because I simply don't feel it is worth the price at which I paid, especially what it is valued at full retail. When you compare this quality to the quality of the actual Shun knives, it just doesn't fit in the same class. However what are my other options?

I have done research, and I think there may be a correlation between the use of magnetic strips with Shun knives, and their tendency to chip. So I decided a block was the best route. There are not a lot to choose from that will fit the wide Shun knives, so this was kind of my limited option. Here are the main points I see to judge it as not being worth the money:

-Packaging: Although this isn't the biggest deal, when you look at high-end companies and their products, they are presented well at every step. This block came in a completely plain cardboard covering simply to add a little protection. Not an original Shun box or anything.

-There was a little piece of paper with a description of the block, and let me tell you, IT WAS ATTACHED VIA A LITTLE PIECE OF SCOTCH TAPE ROLLED IN A CYLINDER SO THAT IT WAS DOUBLE SIDED. You know, the most cheap way you could attach something like that. I mean, it's almost as if it was a used product that was simply repackaged.

-Quality in general. I am a meticulous person when it comes to high-end things. This is not high-end. It's not like it's terrible, just not what I would expect to see as Shun's leading Block to sell with there AMAZINGLY HIGH-END KNIVES.

Anyway, until I see a better option I would buy again. Just can't give it more than 3 stars.

This item was sent as a gift. The original item arrived and the 'Shun' plaque on the front was glued on crooked. We tried to fix it ourselves but couldn't get it to budge. We requested an exchange, and the replacement item was actually worse. It was strangely larger than the original (significantly), it had several cut marks on it, and the seams where the pieces come together were not finished well. Overall, the quality was disappointing. Since the only problem with the original item was the crooked plaque on the front, we decided to keep that one and return the replacement item instead of the original. We will make another attempt to fix the crooked plaque ourselves, since the block is not terrible otherwise. Strange that the replacement item was so much larger (would not fit in the gift box that the original was sent in), and the workmanship was so shabby. We love our Shun knives, so we were surprised and disappointed by these quality issues.

I've had them about 3 months now, and I have to say now I'm VERY disappointed... The blades are all RUSTING! I've had Chicago Cutlery knives since I've been cooking (over 25 years now) and have owned multiple sets as well as purchased them as gifts for others this is the first set I've ever seen RUST! I've contacted the mfg to see what they will do about it, but judging from other things I have read online, it appears rust is something that is common with their less expensive line of knives, and they don't consider it a "manufacturer's defect" ... So buyer be warned if you do purchase these, be very careful about cleaning them, and drying them immediately, and keep them coated with a fine layer of cooking oil, otherwise your set will end up like mine: rusted and destined for the trash...

I have been looking for a decent set of knives. I didn't want to spend a fortune, but I wanted to be able to do basic cooking. These knives have been very sharp so far. They do get water/ rusty looking spots if not dryed right after washing though.

My roommate bought these knives for us to use, and as college students, these are amazing. We used these knives pretty much daily for over a year and a half, and did hand wash and dry most of the time, so we didn't have rust. I like the sizes and number of knives included, the shears were useful, and the built-in sharpener was nice. These were very sharp, I used them to cut off the slimy bits of fat on chicken breasts with no problem, and they did not squash kiwis and tomatoes.

Basically, I couldn't beat the price and sharpness of these knives. I love my roommate's so much, I am buying some of my own since I moved out.

J.A. Henckels International Classic Forged 7-Piece Stainless-Steel Knife Set with Block

J.A. Henckels International Classic Forged 7-Piece Stainless-Steel Knife Set with BlockOkay, so they are made in Spain rather than Germany...so what? These knives are a great starter set for anyone looking to "upgrade" from the dull knives they got as a hand-me-down or when they went off to college.

Chefs say that a safe knife is a sharp knife, and you just can't get that with inferior knives. This line by Henckels probably gets overlooked because you don't find it on the shelves of Williams-Sonoma, but they are just as good. Cutting is also faster with a well-balanced knife with some weight behind it, which this set has as well. I've added kitchen shears since I bought mine, and I'll probably add the utility knife, carving set and cleaver before I'm done. The knives you start with though are all you need. I find myself using just about all of them (except the boning knife) almost every day.

Two caveats though...don't put them in the dishwasher and don't forget to use the steel either before or after you use your knives. My sister put her knives (not Henckels, but of similiar quality) in the dishwasher on a consistant basis and the edges got nicked from all the banging around that goes on. Also, using the steel will keep you from having to have the knives professionally sharpened.

I have owned an overgrown set of these knives for about 4 (UPDATE: NOW 7 YEARS AND STILL LOVE THESE BLADES) years now and waited until I had significant use and comparison to write this review. I also own similar knives in Wusthof Classic and will compare directly. This review has been copied from other Henckels International Classic Reviews I wrote and has been modified slightly for the particular item being reviewed although I left comments about the other knives in.

Disclaimer: I enjoy sharpening knives so edge retention is rarely an issue for me as I probably sharpen even my best knives too much. Besides stone sharpening every 6 months or so, I also steel my knives just about every time I use them.

The bottome line: I really love this set of knives (although I got one dud in the bunch; the only reason I am not giving this line a 5 rating). The edges are almost if not just as good as the more expensive knives but the finish is lacking (although only somewhat). Relatively great value. I did not feel like these knives were very sharp out of the box but they take a scary edge quite easily and keep it for a long time (many, many months with regular steeling and home use).

8 Inch Chef: This is a very nice knife if you can get over the fact that the finish is not as nice as the higher end stuff. By this I mean that the edges on the handle and bolster are sharper than they are on my Wusthof Classic. It takes and holds an edge well. I also own a Wusthof 8 inch chefs knife and feel like this one takes just as sharp of an edge. I have yet to determine a difference in edge retention between the two lines, so that means they are at least comparible. As much as I thought I would be enamored with the wusthof, I really don't believe that the additional cost is worth the small amount of performance gain you might get by buying the Wusthof. In truth, I still enjoy using the Henckels International Chef's knife just as much as the Wusthof. The heft is wonderful and the curvature of the blade is ideal for chopping. I really like how the point is taperd to a very thin blade. Finish aside, this is right up there with the best of them and allows the user to slice with the point quite effectively.

6 Inch Chef: My wife swears by this knife and it is consistantly one of the sharpest we own. For some reason (perhaps the thinner blade), it holds its edge like the sharp little devil it is. This knife is a true pleasure to own and use. It is very effective and feels wonderful in my hand. I may be becoming a knife snob, but I see no reason to buy any other 6 inch chef's knife, as all you would be getting is a fancier name and smoother edges along the handle and bolster. We reach for this one multiple times each day and it retains its edge far better than expected for the price.

4 inch parer: I don't like this one as much as my Wusthof parers but my wife likes it much better. It is always the one she reaches for (many times per day). I personaly prefer the thinness and flexibility of the wusthof parer blades. This one is quite rigid and although it is very sharp, it does not seem to be as sharp as the thinner wusthof parers, nor does it hold its edge as long. On the other hand, its size is perfect for a parer, coming in at the sweet spot between the 3.5 inch wusthof and 4.5 inch wusthof parers I compare it to. I would love to own a 4 inch wusthof parer. Aditionally, the diminished depth of the blade is probably preferable to the deeper wusthof parer blades for tasks such as peeling toward you. I bought one of these for my mother and it is a good test for edge retention as she rarely sharpens and never steels. .

6 inch utility: I do not use this knife much. It seems to be quite redundant with my 4.5 inch Wusthof parer (which also does not see much use) or my favorite boning knife (a beat up and resurected chicago cutlery 5 inch utility that is scary sharp and a joy to use). In truth, almost every task in my kitchen is done quite well with either a parer or a chef's knife. I really don't see much use for a 6 inch utility. That said, this knife is sharp and pleasureable to use. Still, on this one, I would prefer a thinner and perhaps more flexible blade. It is quite rigid and that makes me not want to use it as much. For sandwiches, cheese, tomatoes, etc. it is quite appropriate, but I would still probably prefer my 6 inch or even 8 inch chefs knives for such tasks as they are thinner at the edge and therefore seem much sharper.

Bread knife: Aside from the fact that this would benefit from a longer blade, this is as effective as any other we have tried. You don't have to have a bread knife this nice, but this one certainly does the job well.

Boning knife: I have honestly never used this knife on more than a trial basis. It just does not stack up to my older chicago cutlery boning/utility knife. You can't really compare the two, however, since one is very flexible and thin(CC) and the other is very rigid and thick(HIC). I strongly prefer a thin, flexible boning knife. The finish on this knife was horrible in my particular set. It was rounded (not supposed to be) on the end and the blade had not been sharpened at the point, leaving a rounded and blunt tip (exactly the opposite of what you want in a good boning knife). I have never been able to get the point to where I want it. I am certain that I just have a lemon and will try to return it if possible.

So overall, I love these knives. Between myself and my wife, they get just as much use as my Wusthof Classics. Unless finish is critical to you or you like to have other people know that you spent a lot of money, do your pocketbook a favor. I think these knives are just as good for much less money.

Looks like there are three kinds of Henckels knives on the market: the ultra expensive kind (which don't have the word "International" tacked onto the end), the expensive kind (which do have the word "International" tacked onto the end and which are made in Spain), and the less expensive kind (which also say "International," made in China or elsewhere). I have the Spanish set and a couple of the Chinese knives, and I just don't think the Chinese ones are worth the price. The Spanish knives, on the other hand, are so amazing that I assume the only reason anybody might want the ultra high-end ones probably has something to do with snobbery. My spouse and I comment almost every time we use the Spanish Henckels knives, "Wow! Why didn't we buy these years ago? Who knew what we were missing?" These knives are absolutely superb and ultra sharp. And speaking of sharp, I've never had to sharpen the Spanish Henckels knives, even a year later, but I did make the mistake of buying a Henckels sharpener, the kind with ceramic disks inside that you're supposed to draw the blade through several times, and tested it out on another stainless knife I've had for years. It took off way too much metal. The sword-like sharpener that comes with this Henckels set is far more effective and gentle, if you ever need it.

I bought this block set to replace my Chicago Cutlery chef's knife and paring knife, which I've owned for years. The Henckels are excellently balanced and construction is solid. Out of the box, they are not the sharpest knives ever. However, they're likely to be sharper than the knives they're replacing, and if you get them sharpened, they'll hold an edge with good maintenance. I've used every blade in the set and have been satisfied with them all. I have some slight discoloration of the blades, but nothing too terrible. I've been hand-washing them religiously, but a friend has the same set and tosses them in the dishwasher, and his knives have held up better than mine.

Con:

1. Not the sharpest knives ever.

2. Require significant maintenance.

3. Shears should be included in this set.

Pro:

1. Excellent balance, highly functional.

2. All the basic blades are included.

3. They hold an edge well.

4. Block is utterly functional.

5. You will never be able to buy cheap knives again.

Overall, this block set was a fantastic investment. I'd recommend it to anyone getting into cooking. If you're a professional, you'll probably want something better (there are better Henckels, and Wustof too). If you don't cook much at all, this set is probably overkill.

I love these knives. They are heavier than the Wusthof Grand Prix line that I looked at, and for not being made in Germany, they are remarkably well-made.

They are fully forged and razor sharp.

I compared these side by side to several sets of Henckels and Wusthof knives, particularily the Henckels Pro S made in Solingen, and I could not tell a major difference.

They might not be top notch, but they are certainly nice enough for anything I'll ever need them for.

KitchenAid 3.5-Cup Food Chopper

KitchenAid KFC3100OB Chef Series 3- Cup Food Chopper, Onyx BlackI have had a few full-size food processors in the past -both expensive and cheap models -and the main complaints I had with them were: bulkiness, noise, and cleanup time. Over time, I realized that I was doing fewer and fewer things with the processor, and then finally, it got put away for good.

But lately, I found that I was chopping the same ingredients, in almost the same amounts, again and again.

So, on a whim, really, I decided to give the Kitchenaid 3-cup chopper a try. I own a number of Kitchenaid large appliances, and have always been satisfied. This food chopper is no exception, as it exceeds my expectations for handling my chopping drudgery. Be it onions, garlic, emulsifying dressing, making bread crumbs, chopping nuts, whatever.

This unit takes a very small amount of counter space, has a great look, stores its cord in the base, and its bowl and cover are dishwasher-safe.

This appliance is a nice time-saver, and that, in my opinion, makes it a great item.

When I starting searching for a mini-chopper I was surprised by the huge rating difference between the Cuisinart DLC2 and the KitchenAid KFC3100, so I bought both and did a side-by-side comparison. The only explanation I can give for the ratings difference is that Cuisinart buyers must have higher expectations. For most operations they have nearly identical performance and for some operations the Cuisinart is the clear winner.

Onions: Many Cuisinart reviewers panned its performance here, claiming it made onion purée, but most KitchenAid reviewers praised its onion chopping ability. I found almost no difference between the two. Maybe its an issue with the instructions for chopped onions you must use a few short pulses. A few more pulses and you get minced onion more than this and both give you onion puree. I wouldn't say either is great at chopping onions, but both are equally mediocre.

I also tested chopping nuts, and making breadcrumbs with similar results. Both performed about the same for a course chop, although the Cuisinart produced a more even chop on the nuts, but its when you want a really fine chop that the Cuisinart starts to shine. The first reason for this is the grind feature found only on the Cuisinart. This spins the blade in the opposite direction which allows the flat, back-side of the blade to impact the food. More importantly, it redistributes the food, so if you've got a couple of chunks that refuse to be chopped, a short pulse in the opposite direction helps it drop into the blade. For perfect, fine breadcrumbs I alternate between the normal chop mode for a few seconds, and grind for one second.

The other reason the Cuisinart gives a better fine chop is that it does a much better job of cycling the food through the blade. This is a real key when you're working with softer foods like spreads, pâtés or purees. When I made a cream cheese spread in both choppers the Cuisinart did a far quicker and better job of pulling the ingredients down the center and into the blade. The KitchenAid kept larger chunks bobbing on top. If you're making dips, spreads or baby food, the Cuisinart is the hands-down winner.

On the practical side, both choppers were equally easy to clean. Both have small holes in the lid for pouring in liquids on the fly, but only The KitchenAid has a slot for dry or thick ingredients if that's important to you. Overall, I found the Cuisinart easier to use for several reasons. First, the Cuisinart blade drops on easily, while the KitchenAid blade is keyed and I found myself turning it several times before it dropped in. Second, the KitchenAid lid must be removed first before you can lift off the bowl, but on the Cuisinart, the bowl and lid can be detached as an assembly. Finally, the Cuisinart blade has a "handle" that extends to the top of the bowl like a popsicle stick allowing you to remove the blade without getting your fingers in the food.

After all my testing, I really can't understand the large ratings difference between these two. Neither is perfect you'll never get a perfect, even, course chop with things like onions or chocolate, but they do come in handy. For many uses either one will give you pretty much the same results. Because of its advantage with softer foods and its ease of use, I recommend the Cuisinart.

I love almost everything about this chopper. It's reasonably priced, a nice size, and it does a good job with the chopping (my first experiment, chicken salad, was a success). It's easy to clean, the cord stores in the base, there's a slot in the top to add ingredients while mixing, and the little paddle is handy for scraping out the food from the bowl (it's a tight fit for one of those regular size rubber kitchen paddles). Another good feature: the chop button won't function unless the lid is locked in place.

The one thing I don't love: the noise. I expected some noise with a chopper, of course, but this thing is so loud and *shrill* that it's almost embarrassing to use. It sounds sort of like a dentist's drill, times ten.

So, we have four stars for this product. It does its job, it just makes a lot of noise doing so.

I've never really liked food processors. They are bulky, confusing to assemble, and a pain to clean. I also enjoy the feeling of cutting up my own vegetables the old fashioned way with a knife and board. But after throwing a dinner party where I spent HOURS chopping vegetables, I decided enough is enough and picked up this little buddy.

It works best as a chopper for things like onions, shallots, garlic, or nuts. I've also used it to make fine ground bread crumbs that would have taken forever using a mortar and pestle. Given how small it is, I always leave it on the counter so I can use it whenever I want. The best thing is that clean up has never been a problem. No scrubbing, picking food out of a funky blade, or any other real chores. The blades are as sharp as knife though, so treat that with caution in the sink.

My only real complaint with this chopper is that it is slightly awkard to put together. I always want to take the container, put the blade in, put the food in, put the top on, and put that on the chopper base. Doesn't work that way (but then no chopper or food processor probably does), though I wish it did. Instead, the container goes on the base, then the blade goes in, then the food, and finally the top.

The only other caveat is that you need to quarter or roughly cube your food to be processed. If you don't, then it can often end up stuck above the blade. This limitation is not particular to Kitchenaid's product but choppers in general. The small basin doesn't allow you to drop in big food items like a food processor can handle. Still, it saves you plenty of time.

I had the Cuisinart DLC Miniprep first, and was not happy with it. I wanted a small food processor primarily to chop up an onion and some garlic cloves, and with the Cuisinart, I pretty much ended up doing almost all of the chopping before I put the food in the processor, otherwise large sections wouldn't get cut.

After reading the reviews here about how the Kitchenaid has the reverse sprial action which pulls down the food, I thought I'd try that one, and it's true!! The Kitchenaid KFC3100 is a superior product! Now I can just cut the onion into quarters and throw in whole garlic cloves and it cuts them all up perfectly. If your not sure which of the two products to buy, get the Kitchenaid KFC3100!

People call these things ice cream scoopers. The reason I had to buy this was because somebody used my old one on rock-hard Haagen Daz. NO. NO. NO. It would probably work with softened ice cream, but that never happens at my house. I've threatened people with bodily harm if they try my new toy on ice cream.

I'll definitely replace my smaller scooper with this brand when it finally breaks.

Maybe when you have guests and you want your kitchen to look good turn it over. When you want to use it turn it back.

I chose this cutting board after seeing people complain about the flatness and springiness of thinner 1/2" thick plastic cutting boards. This one is a little thicker than 3/4" and is quite sturdy. The concern expressed by another reviewer of knives leaving white marks on the board is not a problem for the white version of this cutting board. Only complaint I have is that the board did not sit flat on the counter when I first took it out of the box, but I rearranged the rubber feet and it sits just fine. The board certainly isn't cheap given that it's just a big chunk of plastic. But it's nice and sturdy and I can just toss it in the dishwasher and that's what I was looking for.

I have been cooking with a 10 piece Wusthof kitchen Knife set for over 40 years.

I bought my first set in 1972 and still have them . We use them every day in our home kitchen and they are as good as the day I purchased them. I wouldn't think of buying another brand.

The Gourmet Steak Knife set is of equal quality.

The handles on these knives are very comfortable, and the non-serrated blades make a nice, clean slice. Unfortunately, the blades are very thin, and, in fact, the packages that I received had multiple broken knives upon arrival. (Amazon did immediately replace the broken ones.) I have found that I have to baby these knives while cleaning and storing since it is very easy to bend the tips. Too bad, because otherwise they would be perfect.

I mentioned the crack in the knife caddy and that I would contact Schmidt Brothers directly. I did and got a request from one person for photographs of the problem. I took the requested photos and attached them to an email to him. It was returned by the "Postmaster". I resent the email with the same result. I contacted Schmidt Brother again on their website and got a response back from another person. She seemed puzzled that the emails were getting returned and request I send directly to her. I did as requested and again the email was not delivered. I will still say that the knives are awesome, but it you want any customer service you can forget it! I did send another not on the Schmidt Brothers website expressing my irritation and it has not even been answered.

I suspect Amazon should boot them as a vendor! Product is 5* (except for the knife caddy). Customer Service is 0*.

I love to cook. It just makes me feel good and I smile a lot when I am in the kitchen, but there was one thing that made it less pleasurable...I had good knives but trying to keep a half-way decent sharpness on them was a nightmare. I have wanted professional quality knives for a long time, but the price was prohibitive.

These knives are very reasonably priced and perform exactly as I had hoped. My son was over a few days after I got them and was in awe at the way they sliced through a tomato like it was warm butter.

The only complaint I have is that the rather cleverly designed knife caddy has a crack in the wood that after only a few weeks has already gotten worse (I NEVER put knives away with any moisture on them. Just not a good practice). I will take that up with Schmidt Brothers directly. I'm sure they will take care of it right away. I'll update if they don't.

Bottom line I would highly recommend any amateur chef (or professional for that matter) buy these knives.
