Wusthof Classic Ikon 2-Piece Asian Cook's Set

Wusthof Classic Ikon 2-Piece Asian Cook's Set, BlackLongtime fan of Wusthof knives and wanted to try out the more ergonomic grip of the Ikon set. The knives fit wonderfully in my hands and offer a very comfortable and positive grip with very little pressure.

These *are* the sharpest knives in the drawer. And they hold an edge. Hone them before every use to maintain that edge, and assure a clean wound. I've found that if I run my finger under cold water and then pinch the cut closed very tight immediately after injuring myself, it heals almost instantly--the cut is that clean! A small bandage usually does the trick (see my glowing review of band-aids, as well.)

All seriousness aside, meat and vegetables do not stand a chance against these blades, and I would far prefer to work with a sharp knife than struggle against a dull one.

Towle Lancaster 65-Piece Flatware

Towle Lancaster 65-Piece FlatwareBought this to replace aging wedding flatware. This was much cheaper than the Towle that I'd had previously. It was not only very light, but also, it had a funny ridges on the sides...you can't really see it in the photo.

No complaints with the seller, but not being able to see a close up photo was a bummer.

This is really light stuff like you'd find at HomeGoods not what I was replacing.

WMF Profi Plus Lid Gripper

WMF Profi Plus Lid GripperI received this gripper about six months ago and have been very happy with it's performance. It can close up enough on small caps (such as soda bottles)that it will hold tight while I open them. It expands to a large enough diameter to open tops on large jars, as well. It provides good leverage, making the opening of jars much easier for me, since I have arthritis in my thumbs and have trouble gripping anything. It's only drawback is it doesn't work so well on some odd things: I can't use it to get off the bottom of the blender container if it's screwed on too tight, for example. I'm not sure it was meant for that sort of work, anyway! But for all-purpose, kitchen jar and bottle opening, it's a great gadget.

My mother and myself we always won the jar opening competitions in our family. My three very strong brothers have been useless! Sure enough, we both had our tricks. But some years ago I had to realize that my mother could not open jars anymore. The strength in her hands had been gone. I found the jar opener for her and she loves to work with it. She had been so impressed that I bought one for myself too. And I can say too that it is a very helpful tool. The opener is easily adjustable and holds the jar tightly for the opening of the jar. No spilling, no mess, just useful.

I got this as a gift and thought that it would collect dust in my junk drawer. Not so! This is an AMAZING product. I can open ANY Jar without banging it with a knife or runnig water on it. Pasta jar, olive jar, hearts of palms, and even twist off beer bottles. I am no longer waiting for my husband to come home or breaking the jar to get the goodies out. It makes it a breeze to open stuff up! This is one gadget that everyone needs!

The quality is much better than expected. Finally no more struggling with difficult lids. It works on small beverage caps to wide jar lids. Wish I had heard of it sooner. This is worth the price!

Want WMF Profi Plus Lid Gripper Discount?

If your only problem in opening jars is getting your fingers gripped around the lid, and you have the arm strength to hold the jar still and pull on this opener's handle, then this is the product for you. If, however, you're someone who just does not have hand or arm strength, period, then the WMF Profi Plus Lid Gripper will not help you.

Messermeister Pro-Touch 4-1/4-Inch Mini Santoku with Sheath

Messermeister Pro-Touch 4-1/4-Inch Mini Santoku with SheathI bought this mini Santoku just recently for I wanted a knife in this design that was a little smaller than the 5 inch or better average. At around $8.00 I wasn't expecting much for sure. And that's just what I got. Don't even consider this for a kitchen knife. Though the handle is nice and thick and very comfortable, the blade is as thin and cheap as they come. You can bend it easily with your fingers, and it will disintegrate quickly with any sharpening. It's ok as a utility knife for your drawer or back yard shed, (which is where my ended up), but that's about all. A plastic sheath is included so you can tuck it away somewhere as a handy knife without worry of slicing yourself with it when fishing it out. Not bad at all for small miscellaneous jobs, but as a kitchen utensil, its a big fat NO......

5 Ss Blade Polypropylene Knife

5 Ss Blade Polypropylene KnifeThese steak knives are large and tough. (I bought them to replace some flimsy department-store steak knives, which had a tendency to break when I used them.) These do not disappoint.

The rounded tips are a nice safety feature--I have a toddler, and although we always keep knives out of his reach, it's safer not to have pointy knives in the house at all.

I do have one complaint. The blade of a steak knife has a flat side and an angled, serrated side. On these knives, the angled side is on the left (as viewed from the top when using the knife.) I would prefer it to be on the right side. The reason is this: when cutting a piece of meat, having the angled side on the left generally means that when I try to cut, the knife twists to the right. Since I'm right-handed, I'm generally cutting on the right-hand side of the meat. Therefore, whe the knife twists to the right, I don't get a nice clean cut.

Switching the angled side to the other side of the blade would solve my problem and make this a perfect knife for me.

Or, if I were left-handed, that would solve the problem too. But alas, I'm not.

Update 2/4/2013: After owning these for about six months, the verdict is in: everybody in my family hates them. My wife thinks they're dangerous, because the twisting action makes them tend to slip. I'm not any sort of knife expert, but I figure that a good knife should just work. You shouldn't have to think about the knife. Not so with these: you have to think, think, think, because the large, angled blade will twist, twist, twist away from you if you don't pay attention. So I'm going to get rid of them.

Best Manufacturers Pastry Pro Dough Blender 6-inch with Blue Handle

Best Manufacturers Pastry Pro Dough Blender 6-inch with Blue HandleThe name fits, this is the Best Pastry Blender. It's like a small potato masher, with the strength that suggests. We had two previous pastry blenders that tended to bend and twist. One use of this little brute and the others went to Goodwill, and good riddance.

I have a kitchen full of gadgets and most my wife just rolls her eyes about but the first time she used this she couldn't say enough about it. Now a year later she still says how much she prefers it over our other pastry cutters (which have all been thrown out...)

Buy Best Manufacturers Pastry Pro Dough Blender 6-inch with Blue Handle Now

I have other products by Best Manufacturers and have been quite happy with them so far. However, this pastry blender has not quite lived up to the name. I like the handle and long upright position but the the flat bottom has only hindered my success in adequately cutting fat into the dry mixture. In a round bowl the cutting blades don't fully make contact with the surface, leaving butter somewhat untouched and sometimes taking some pretty deep gouges out of the bowl surface. If the bottom had a more rounded cutting area this would be the perfect product for me. Until then, I am going to need to look somewhere else.

OXO Good Grips 22281 5 1/2-Inch Veggie Knife

OXO Good Grips 22281 5 1/2-Inch Veggie KnifeI bought this knife years ago, and it still stays sharp. I love it because I have small hands for an adult, and I don't feel as safe using a large knife, and this one works great for me. I LOVE Oxo products and own many!! Would make a wonder gift too, especially for someone who has problems with their hands, as their handles do make a person feel safer when using the item, and they feel very comfortable in the hand, especially important when using a knife!! They last too, and I still use this knife for many, many items, and it is still sharp, years later!!

Oneida Azalea 20-Piece Flatware Set, Service for 4We needed to supplement the flatware we already had and I was happy to find the style on here. I like that I can buy spoons and forks, etc. separately as well.

It looks nice but the design is uncomfortable to hold. The back of the silverware is dished so there's a square corner on the back corner edges. Poor design in my opinion. Returned it right away (thanks Amazon).

Highest quality of precision forged in Solingen, Germany since 1814, Wusthof knives are designed for maximum strength, safety, balance and weight. Stainless steel construction ice-hardened for maximum durability and corrosion resistance, sleek innovative design, and great functionality. Very sharp and comfortable well priced at $169.99 price is right.

Wüsthof Steak Knifes Grand Prix II Set is an excellent example of fine craftmanship the are forged not stamped with perfect blend of materials.

I remember father purchasing Wusthof Solingen trident knifes though expensive they were and still are the best.

I bought a set of these steak knives 15 years ago and highly recommend them. They feel comfortable and solid in the hand, cut very well, and will probably last forever.

I want a steak knife to cut well, which is a function of edge and ergo-dynamics. These deliver. The blade is great, and as i own other Wusthof Grand Prix knives, I know they will hold an edge and re-sharpen well. The balance, weight, and feel of the handle are just right for me. Finally, they just look good; clean and elegant design.

There are more expensive steak knives, and there may be better ones, but these are plenty good. They also make a great utility knife for jobs too large for a paring knife, but not quite right for a chef's knife. Highly recommended.

These steak knives are a tremendous improvement over our old set. They have a high quality and balanced feel and, of course, are very sharp. They nicely match our kitchen knife set of the same brand/model. Only issue (small) is that one has to look close to distinguish a steak knife from the 5 inch utility knife in the kitchen set. We've mixed them up a couple of times.

I love the wooden handle on this spatula, looks very classy, and it's not nearly as expensive as some of the stainless steel models. This is the perfect spatula for flipping delicate items, because it is SO thin. The little angle on it is necessary to help with getting it under whatever you're flipping. It's a long base, so don't expect it to hold a ton of weight, but that's not what it's designed for. I also use this for delicate cookies, and anything that's breaded in the saute pan.

A delight!

Want Winco 6 1/2-inch Fish Spatula with Wood Handle FST-6 Discount?

I am happy I bought this. I had one with a plastic handle and I melted every time I set the spatula down for even a second on the edge of the pan. I used it this morning to cook some sausage patties and set on the edge of the pan so I could move a plate closer to the stove to take the sausage off. The handle did not burn or melt. That made me happy. Often we all leave the spatula in the pan when we take out what ever we have cooked. If the handle melts well it is upsetting. So I am happy I bought this one with a wood handle.

grapefruit spoon set

grapefruit spoon setThese spoons work really well for digging into grapefruit. I wouldn't say they're anything close to fine silverware, but they are pretty sturdy and I can see them lasting a long time.

For roughly $4, these spoons are a good deal. However, they were slightly flimsier than I expected, for lack of a better description. They feel kind of thin and light. However, they allow you to easily eat grapefruit, which is really all that matters. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase.

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin Pure Serving Spoon

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin Pure Serving SpoonThis thing is a work of metal art. Fits the hand well, the bowl of the spoon is the right shape for scooping out things. It's not sharp on the edges, but still squared off enough to scrape the inside of a pumpkin with. I love it. I only wish they made this same spoon with slots/holes in it for scooping out things you'd like to leave behind the fluid with. I know that there is a skimmer but this shape is better.

That says it all. Great design. Well made. Feels well balanced in the hand, handles well, and does the job intended easily, with grace and dignity. Got to love it.

Shun Reserve ND0700 Paring Knife, 3.5-Inch

Shun Reserve ND0700 Paring Knife, 3.5-InchI struggled between three and four stars on this knife. When I first bought it, it was easily the best knife that I have ever owned. Ever. I have other Shun knives, but this one was exceptional.

The blade is beautiful and very sharp sharper than any of the other Shun knives that I have. The weight and feel is outstanding. I always cut my apples with paring knives, and this one did better and felt better than my Shun Premier paring knife which was the best knife that I had used prior to this.

I was totally excited to give this five stars...until last night. What's not shown in the product picture is that there is a red layer of some material between the PakkaWood handles on each side and the metal tang. When mine arrived, the red material in one small section was splintered, but no big deal. What I noticed last night, though, was that the metal tang was exposed over most of the length of the handle on one side because the red material had apparently eroded due to washing and the tang was sharp enough to shallowly slice the skin on my hand. This is the only knife that I've ever owned in which the tang has become exposed ever and after only about ten uses. That's seriously disappointing, given how excellent the knife is in general.

So, while the individual pieces of the knife are by far the best that I've ever owned, the fact that the design allows the sharp tang to become exposed is a big detractor. I'm not the first reviewer to note this, so I know it's not limited to the one that I bought. I give this a reserved recommendation, but with the caveat that you return or exchange yours if the red layer isn't perfect when you receive it. I thought something was off when I opened mine, but I didn't act on it and now I wish that I would have.

I bought this paring knife for my wife and the first time she used it, the tip broke off. The seller said this was not a common problem and promptly shipped a replacement. Within a week, the tip on the second knife was gone. I suppose this could be due to improper usage, although this has not happened with any other knife (including paring knives) my wife has owned over the last 23 years. I'm guessing it might be fine for a properly trained chef who never makes a mistake, but it is much too delicate for a normal cook. Another observation I have about Shun knives in general (my wife has a Shun chef's knife also) is that the edges are much more subject to damage than, say, a Wusthof or Henckels. Shuns also seem to need more frequent sharpening. Yes, I am aware chefs sharpen their knives frequently, but there's that problem of what professionals do. Although my wife loves these knives overall, they just don't seem suited to regular folks who have not been trained in proper usage and maybe get their knives sharpened every ten years. I give them four stars because in the right hands and with extra special care they are superior knives.

Buy Shun Reserve ND0700 Paring Knife, 3.5-Inch Now

We purchased the Shun Reserve Paring Knife as a Christmas treat for ourselves. As a man I really liked the beefy handle and the western-style grip. My wife loved the sharpness of the blade. She said she could lay the knife on veggies and let gravity cut them. The length of the knife is 7 13/16 inches. The grip from the bolster to the end of the handle measures 4 inches. The laser etching on the blade gives it a cool look and the nickel/stainless steel makes for easy care.

Now to my concerns. After only 3 weeks of use, the wood inlays which sandwich the tang began to splinter and separate from the knife. Leaving valleys between the tang and prominent charcoal wood pieces of the handle. This exposes the edge of the tang and makes for an annoying little skin gripper when using the knife. My recommendation would be to lose the red inlays and make the handle out of two solid pieces on each side of the tang.

I would like to conclude by saying we have other Shun knives that have served us very well for many years and this is the only time we have ever returned one of their products.

MADE IN USA! Liberty Tabletop "Pinehurst" 18-10 Flatware Set 65 Piece

MADE IN USA! Liberty Tabletop 'Pinehurst' 18-10 Flatware Set 65 PieceI like this pattern a lot. The hammered finish is very nice looking. The stainless is excellent quality. I have had the set for several months now and I have not seen any rust spots at all.

My main reservations are that the teaspoon and salad forks seem smaller than normal. Also the knife handles are not as heavy as a solid forged knife. I also worry that the handles might come loose at some point. Overall... the Liberty set feels lighter, smaller and cheaper than the less expensive Ginkgo set I had before.

I was also disappointed in the polish work of the Liberty set. Many of the forks have sander marks on the sides of the metal instead of polished to a smooth finish. I ended up polishing some of them with my own Dremel tool to make them shine. (You should not have to do your own silversmithing on a brand new set...)

Frankly I preferred the Ginkgo set I had before this one... except for the fact that the Ginkgo set was made from 18/0 steel that rusted frequently. The Ginkgo set just feels more substantial and the finish work on the Ginkgo set is vastly superior. (And the Ginkgo set is 1/2 the cost.) The only advantage that the Liberty Pinehurst has is superior 18/10 steel that does not rust in the dishwasher.

I think that Liberty should have done a better job of finishing & polishing edges of the forks & spoons. I think that Liberty should consider making the set larger and more substantial like the Ginkgo...
