Oneida Mooncrest 20-Piece Flatware Set, Service for 4

It's sad. There was a time when Oneida meant quality. Those days are gone--now Oneida is just a nameplate, and its products are manufactured in generic, no name factories in China just like the X brand junk you can get at any budget store.

This set is low quality. The pieces are made from very heavy steel. Why? Because the steel they use is 18/0 stainless, the lowest quality stainless you can get. They have to make the pieces thick or they'll bend. Compare that to my 10 year old Oneida set, made from 18/8 stainless. They're thin and light as a feather because it's high quality steel.

Also, they include an insert in the packaging to tell you not to use these with acidic foods and that they must be washed right away to prevent damage. Why? Because low quality 18/0 stainless will be etched by food, but higher quality stainless (18/8) will not. In other words, don't fall for the hype. If it's cheap junk you want, buy a cheap junk brand and pay a cheap junk price. If you want quality, don't buy Oneida.

The quality and durability is average for sets in this price range.

The appearance is clean and simple.

The soft metal surface does scratch easily. If you have any hard water issues, the smooth surface may show water spots.

If you use any sort of abrasive cleaning, such as a scratch pad, the surface WILL scratch. Hand drying may be necessary.

The knife handles are somewhat heavier than average. The set is heavy enough to prevent bending.

If you are looking for a set in this price range, and avoid the scratching issues mentioned, you'll likely find they are satisfactory.

Because I love my first Kuhn-Rikon Kulu Vegetable Knife so much, I ordered this one as a gift for my daughter. This knife is very versatile I especially like it for cutting salad vegetables. I frequently use bagged salads, so I just dump the bag's contents into a big bowl, and then rock my blade through the lettuce and stuff a few times. Voila bite-size pieces! The blade, which is super sharp, is very easy to clean. Some reviewers found the curved tool difficult to use, but I think it's quite easy. My arthritic fingers can easily and painlessly use this wonderful knife. With this, an onion slices perfectly, and my eyes don't tear because I don't saw back and forth releasing onion fumes into the air. I also use it to trim and slice meats for wok-cooking. I just got my order of 2 of these in-drawer knife blocks and I love them already!! I had pre-measured so I knew they'd fit into my drawer but I was unsure about the quality as I've read conflicting reviews. All I can say is that mine are of very good quality, on a scale of 1-10 I'd rate as a 7-8. There are no rough edges, nothing is loose or ill-fitted, but they are not what you'd expect from say a solid hardwood. However, they fit all of my knives and share one drawer. Things are organized and best of all, they are off the counter where they had previously been collecting dust in their old knife block which was impossible to clean. I recommend.

Reed & Barton EveryDay New Attitude 18/0 Stainless Steel 45-Piece Flatware Set, Service for 8

First of all, the picture on Amazon of the set makes the flatware look grey/blue in color this is NOT right! The set is a traditional polished silver steel color just like most of Reed & Barton's other sets. For an accurate color, go to R&B's website and search for it (or look at the picture of the serving pieces on Amazon for this set which is closer to the real look). I couldn't have been more pleased with the set once I got it. The set is modern, but with enough simplicity to still be classic. I wanted a set that was more neutral/versatile in look.

The weight is solid as well and I like the balance of each piece in the hand. It's far more robust than the cheap 18/0 set I bought before from Bed & Bath. Also, very important this set is truly 18/10 stainless steel. I double checked with the manufacturer beforehand. Be careful as there are many flatware sets on Amazon that are incorrectly designated as 18/10 when they are in actuality 18/0 or 18/8!

For those of you who don't know, 18/10 refers to the proportion of chromium to nickel in the stainless steel alloy. The addition of nickel to the alloy increases its corrosion resistance while adding a bright polished appearance, hardness, and exceptional resistance to all temperatures. As the nickel level is increased, the quality of the stainless steel is increased. The "top of the line" boast 10% nickel content (or 18/10), the highest quality available in stainless steel. 18/0 is the lowest quality and has no nickel in it. Believe me, the 18/10 difference is immediately visible to the naked eye flatware looks more bright and water tends to bead on the steel almost as if there is a wax coating on it.

I got the set for $90, which in my mind is a good price for a 45 piece 18/10 set. Couldn't be more pleased and would highly recommend this set!

I love this flatware. For the price it has a high end feel and the flatware itself is nice and sturdy (if you have young boys you may understand how the tines of forks can mysteriously bend). The pattern is polished (as opposed to matte). Its simplicity is understated but brings its own elegance with it. I'm really pleased with this set (we got two actually). It looks better to me in person than the photos and will do very nicely for a spectrum of occasions. I trust this will be on our table for years to come. Worth every penny, I highly recommend it.

Tablecraft Plastic Base 24" Magnetic Bar Knife Holder

And you too will get what you pay for with this one. The holder is a notch above dollar store quality. Like many here, I spied this for its length of 24" and its price. The trade off is barely any performance or functionality. Its plastic housing flexes -be extra careful on your installation or you could end up with a bowed (less than straight) knife holder on your wall. It's not beautiful as someone suggested -it will add as much charm to your kitchen as your ice trays do. It does not contain very powerful magnets. A knife holder should basically "grab" a knife from you when you're busy prepping and cooking. This one doesn't. You'll have to carefully place your larger knives on it, lest you care to lose some of your toes!!! All these glowing reviews lead me to believe most of the reviewers probably have never had a magnetic knife holder in their kitchen. I had one in the kitchen where I used to rent and found it extremely handy and novel on first use, but that holder was a far better performer with more functionality than this one. If you really can't afford a more expensive holder, this one will do -just know you are getting what you payed for.

I don't think I've been happier with a small kitchen item. All my knives are off the counter and out of the drawers, creating space for prep work. I had forgotton about these somehow, after years of working in restaurants, but oh how handy they are.

I am in a rather small apartment and needed to clear up some of my limited counter space. I have used a knife block for years and wanted/needed something smaller. This knife rack is perfect. All of the metal kitchen items that I use frequently fit onto this magnet rack including knives, a zester, scissors, and a small wisk. Although it comes with hooks that extend below the rack, I find that they are not useful and are covered by the items on the magnetic strip.

Although it doesn't slam the knife against the rack with the force of the magnets, this rack will securely hold my largest knives. I picked this rack because reviews were astounding and the price per inch of knife rack was the second cheapest. I don't know what the review about flimsiness was talking about, as the rack is very rigid and, although it is plastic, looks good on the wall. After using it for about a month, I have no complaints. Will post again if I find any problems.

I bought this one because it is one of the longer ones. I think that it is perfect. It was easy to install. It also came with 6 little hooks that hang from the bottom which was a nice bonus. It was a bit heavier than expected, so I did have to use drywall anchors. I don't know what that review was talking about regarding the "bowing" because with its weight and rigidity I can't imagine how that would happen. And the magnets are plenty strong. Although they are exposed in the front, I think a thin strip of metal encasing it would be more attractive. But with all the knives on it, it still looks good. A little creepy with all the knives on the wall like that, but still attractive. And my counter is finally clear!

We love our simple Screwpulls (friends have broken several over the years, because they did not ask how to work it, so we keep buying new ones). But the most recent one does not say Screwpull on the side it says "Le Creuset." And in opening one kind of bottle (it happens to be the tall Toasted Head Chardonnay bottle), the hub on the side which holds the opener against the bottle rim is slightly larger, and will not permit the cork to come out, without rocking the opener sideways. It works fine on all the other wine bottles I have tried. My old one says "Screwpull" with the little circled R after, and it works perfectly. I wonder if this is this a newly-engineered style? I initially ordered this knife because I am addicted to purple (true story!) and wanted a sheathed knife for my everyday utensil drawer. The sheath has a right way and a wrong way to go on, which is far from obvious. The knife gets very stuck almost all the way in if it is done incorrectly. Even with the sheath on correctly, a very small but sharp corner of the knife still sticks out by the handle.

The knife cuts well enough and is fun to look at. The color tricks you into thinking it is plastic, though! If you need a sheath, this is only OK, but there aren't a lot of choices of sheathed chef knives. If the sheath is not needed, make a different choice.

I bought these knives for my wife for Christmas. We bought them to complement our regular set of Professional S knives.

About the knives: The look of these was dead on with our current set. The finish of the handles could have been better. They feel a bit light and the handles just aren't as smooth as the Professional S set. That being said -they weren't nearly as expensive. I posted pictures of the end serrations on the blade. Not sure how this will effect sharpening them in the future.

About the block:

It was lighter in color than the other knife block we have. The stock photo is a very good representation of the color of the product we received. I would have been more pleased if it matched exactly.

Overall:

My wife is very happy with them. They cut well and look pretty good. I only ask for a bit better quality feel and a slightly different block color.

Magnagrip Magnetic Knife & Utensil Holder 18"

I've had this magnet strip in both my home and in professional environments but lost it in a "custody battle." It absolutely cannot be beat. The magnet is very strong and the strip screws securely into the wall. This system is beneficial if counter space is limited (as in my home kitchen). I had a hard time finding a wooden model because most on the market are now plastic which does NOT work. I had a plastic knife strip on my wall next to my oven (which was the only available place for it). The heat from the back of the oven MELTED the plastic strip over time! Farberware Tristar 15-Piece Knife Set in Pine Block

These are not Farberware, but Hoan -which makes cut-rate kitchen implements like knives, measuring cups etc. I sent these as a gift, and was hugely embarrassed when I showed up for dinner and found out I'd sent this junk.This is deceptive advertising at its worst -shame on you, Amazon!

I've only had these for a couple of weeks, but they seem pretty nice. The quality of the blades and handles seem exceptional for the price. They are all heavy, and well balanced. They are not extremely sharp, but you can sharpen all of them more yourself except for the bread knife and steak knives.

Just a note...these knives ARE made by Farberware, but you would never know it! It does NOT say Farberware anywhere on either the box, or the paperwork. It just says "TriStar" on the box, and the paperwork denotes that TriStar is a division of Lifetime Hoan. The only thing the knives say is "China" (on the blades). If giving these as a gift, you may want to take that into consideration. The block looks nice now, but I'm not sure how long it will hold up (because of moisture, etc. in kitchen) ... because it is only cheap pine.

Definitely not a Farberware. A few knives aren't even sharp and steel quality is very poor. I will make a use of steak knives, they seem to do their job... One of the big knives is the worst, because the blade is heavier then the handle, so it's hard to use it safely.

This set is much worse quality than a couple knives I bought at "Conway" store a few years ago. This should give you an idea not to buy it. Add a little more money and buy something much better. Do not buy it as a gift!

The reason I stopped eating salads daily was they go bad in the refrigerator too fast. So upon realizing that I need fresh salads for optimal health, I decided to explore options for preserving them. After examining various 'vacuum seal' options, the Lettuce Keeper jumped out as the most logical looking solution. Vegetables, just like plants in the ground, need some air circulation, and the Lettuce Keeper system has all the aspects of vegetable preservation covered. It even has a lower tray from which water evaporates into the storage chamber, which is ventilated. Evaporation and ventilation are applied differentially to various vegetables and fruits.

My experience with the Lettuce Keeper confirms my initial impression of it. It preserves salads far longer than I've seen with any other storage medium I've used. After a week contents show no sign of spoilage or aging. I've not tried any 'vacuum seal' containers, so I can't compare this to that, but I can say this works very well! As per the initial critical review here, the instructions say to place the lid and all on a dishwasher's top rack. I couldn't be happier with this device; and thanks to it, I can be healthier too!

I have been on a diet, eating lots of salads, and have tried everything I could think of to keep the lettuce fresh. Even after purchasing a salad spinner, which I liked ok, I was still throwing a lot of lettuce away because it became wilted and brown. Then I purchased this salad keeper and the result has been a total turn-around in the condition and longevity of my lettuce.

I first cut up (with a plastic lettuce knife don't use metal knives on lettuce), washed and spun my lettuce out in the salad spinner. I then put it in this salad keeper, opening the vents and putting 1/2 cup of water in the bottom as the directions state. The last bowl of lettuce was taken out for use about a week after it was first put in there and it was just as crisp as could be and only a few little brown spots. In fact, the first time I took the keeper out of the frig to make a salad the lettuce was actually more crisp than when I put it in there fresh.

If you like salads and want to keep your lettuce fresh, purchase one of these. I'll never be without it again.

I haven't calculated how much longer in days, but I know I have been surprised when I dig in there to make a salad and realize the lettuce is still good! I make sure to fluff out the lettuce as much as possible when I put it in the lettuce keeper, otherwise moisture and condensation between the lettuce leaves can turn it into slimy gunk, even with the best storage solution. Yes, the top doesn't stay on really well and could probably have been better designed, but the keeper isn't meant to be put into the refrigerator on it's side. Keep it upright and everything will be fine!

We live in Hawaii. Since the climate is very warm and moist, most of our fruits and vegetables go bad within a week if they are uneaten, especially lettuce. This lettuce keeper has allowed us to keep lettuce for up to three or four WEEKS before it gets brown. Here are some notes about how we use it

1) We don't actually ever add any water. It's humid enough here that we don't need to.

2) You need to LEAVE space in the container. If you pack in too much, then the vegetables can't breathe, and you're defeating the whole point.

3) We have never washed this in the dishwasher, and the lid is fine.

I bought this impulsively and it spent a year in storage, never used. Then I decided to eat healthier, which meant more produce. I dusted it off and put it to use and was truly shocked by it's amazing performance. Generally speaking, lettuce seems to stay fresh only a matter of days without this lettuce keeper. My only complaint is that the stretchy lid is not very forgiving about the fact my brother decided to run it through the dishwasher a couple of times. Definitely avoid putting the lid in your dishwasher.

I do not care for the aluminum set. As far as it being sharp... That is not a problem the knives are very sharp. I don't care for the texture of the handles as they feel a bit odd. Also the handles are tarnishing after only two uses. Perhaps they are not dishwasher safe but I don't recall a warning on that. All in all I am not a fan
