Top Chef by Master Cutlery 5-Piece Chef Basic Knife Set with Nylon Carrying Case

Received these for a Christmas gift. I use Henckel Profi S at home, and was looking for a cheaper set to stash in my locker at the fire station. Using German Henckels, my standards are pretty high, and I have to say that these inexpensive knives were a pleasant surprise! They have good balance, and are most definitely ice-hardened stainless, same process as Henckels uses. Tradeoff with stainless is that you can't get quite as sharp of an edge, i.e. you probably couldn't shave with them, but they are well beyond adequate for most kitchen tasks. If you need razor sharp (sushi, filet knife, etc.), you will probably want something other than these for a couple of reasons. They come with a great edge right out of the box, but this stainless doesn't hold up quite as well as other stainless knives I've used. I have been surprised to see that the faces of the blades have scratched all over from handwashing with a green scrubby on one side of a sponge--I would never expect hard stainless to do that. I don't care about that cosmetically, but that just tells me that the steel is a bit softer, and I definitely have to hone and/or sharpen before preparation of each meal. I have definitely been spoiled by the abuse that Henckels will take before needing honing!

The downside in my opinion is the case. The knife pockets are created by sewing a piece of flat nylon stock to a flat backing, which leaves the threads fully exposed to the edges of the knives (there is no permanent insert in the sleeves). The knives come in thin plastic sleeves, and with a plastic cover on the tips, but these will probably be quickly lost or cut through. Replacing the plastic covers on the tips is not a good idea anyway, much like re-capping a needle. In any case, I have used the plastic sleeves every time, yet the stitching has come out of the case to the point where it no longer holds the knives (after two weeks' use). The knives also have a velcro tab around the handle, which I find to be a hassle--a well-designed case won't need this and it's one more thing to mess with when your hands are covered in food. If you use this case, I'd suggest getting some edge covers that are more substantial and designed to last.

I am returning my defective set, but will likely order another of this product in hopes the case defect on my case was an isolated incident. The quality of the knives is worth the hassles of the case. Alternately, I may buy a better case and keep just the knives--at $48, the knives are a steal even without the case!

For another excellent budget knife brand, look at Forstner by Victorinox. They are a stamped blade (not forged), but their 9-inch filet and 14-inch slicer (with granton edge) are the finest function I've used at any price.

Isabella, you need to do some research before smearing a product through ignorance.

These knives are X30Cr13 stainless steel, the same steel used in many high-quality chef knives, and it is decidedly NOT carbon steel.

If you honestly believe that stainless steel means it will never stain, you should likely drop out of culinary school and choose a vocation where you won't be exposed to such illogical concepts.

Stainless steel doesn't develop the patina that carbon steel does, and cannot be sharpened to the same razor edge. It stays brighter and is easier to clean, but can definitely stain or discolor with use.

These knives are an excellent bargain I'll be using them as a Christmas gift, myself. I may even get several sets, depending on who needs them. :)

After losing my beloved Shun Kaji knives in a divorce, I had to find a new set of knives for a bargain price more in line with my new budget. Being a Top Chef fan and foodie, I decided to take a chance and get this inexpensive set.

One thing I love about these knives is the nicely round shaped handles which are great for eliminating hand fatigue. I've recently been suffering with severe carpel tunnel and arthritis in my right hand which makes it hard to use most kitchen utensils for an extended amount of time without pain and hand fatigue. These knives I can use for hours without any pain.

These knives are also very sharp. I've cut, chopped, diced and minced carrots, potatoes, cheese, onions, etc., all with no problem. It was very important to me to have a knife that could cut a carrot with ease and these knives fit the bill. If you have any knife skills at all you should have no problem using these knives with ease.

So far, my set hasn't stained or discolored. Though, I always hand wash them with a soft cloth and dry them immediately.

I love the nylon carrying case as well, as it keeps my good knives out of sight from my fiance who used to grab my good knives to use for some outdoor project!

Overall, this is a good basic set at a great bargain price and they should work for any basic kitchen tasks. I love them.

Sabatier 10 Inch Forged Stainless Chef Knife made in France

About 35 years ago my Dad gave me a 10" Stainless Sabatier Chef knife. I have been using it ever since and it is my go to kitchen knife. I like the relatively straight edge on the blade which is great for slicing. (If you like to rock your knife on the curve of the blade when chopping you might consider a different style of chef knife.) I also have a couple of smaller Sabatier chef knives made from high carbon steel which is the more common steel for Sabatier knives and which is preferred by many. I use these much less frequently partly because I like the 10" size better and partly because of the increased care they require because they are not stainless. They must be carefully dried after each use or they rust. Because they get used less, it is difficult for me to say if the high carbon steel holds a better edge then the stainless or not but I can't tell much difference in how sharp I am able to get the high carbon steel vs the stainless steel. When I am done sharpening them, they are all razor sharp.

I recently bought a second home and I bought a set of well rated but cheaper knives (Victorinox). They worked but I was badly missing my Sabatier. I purchased this knife and now my new kitchen feels like home. I've been using it for a couple of weeks now and this is a great knife which is practically identical to my other knife. If you want great quality but not great maintenance, then this stainless Sabatier is the way to go.

Chicago Cutlery Fusion 18-Piece Knife Set

I purchased these knives a couple of months ago after reading all kinds of knife set reviews from every site I could find. These are real nice and sharp! I especially like the santoku knives. They cut and chop tomatoes and onions awesomely. I wasn't too sure about the steak knives as they looked thin compared to the last set of steak knives I had, but after I used them they're are even better! As one reviewer said the larger knives do not line up when sitting in the knife block, but a small thing. They are still a really nice looking set. My son use to work as a chef in a large restaurant and he loved these knives. They are well made and I haven't experienced any rust. They sit in you hand perfectly. I do not put them in the dishwasher as I want them to last. If you want a nice set of knives without the high price, these are for you.

Well after searching and searching, reading review and reading reviews I decided on this set. I ordered them from at first and then found them cheaper $ shipped at so I canceled and ordered from them. Received the set and right away I knew I was going to love these knifes. Well balanced, well weighted, and feel great in hand. I was a little worried that the poly grip handles were going to be squishy but they are not at all. Just a very slight give and feels soft to the touch. I actually really like the poly grip handles. The steak knife handles are a little thin but still work great. The blades are nice and strong and sharp right out of the box. Spend a few seconds on each one with the included sharpening Steel and they just get shaper. There is only ONE thing that is somewhat bothering to me and most would laugh about this but when you place all the knifes in the storage block they don't line up perfect like the picture shows. After trying to rearrange the knifes you just can't get them to line up. This has nothing to do with the quality of the knifes and with me being extremely hard to please. This only bothered me for 5 minutes and I decided this set is WAY to nice especially for the price to let this bother me. They kind of make a rainbow shape when placed in the storage block so it looks ok. Like I said I am hard to please when it comes to quality of a product and this set pleases me. I have looked at many sets before purchasing this set and for only $129.95 I truly believe you will NOT find a better set. Maybe even for more money. I highly recommend you give them a try.

Can't really go wrong with this (made in China) set. For the price, that is.

These are heavy, well balanced, forged knives, blades made of rust-resistant, reasonably good quality high-carbon stainless steel. On the box it says that they are 'fusion forged' but I have no idea what that means. The specialized knives come with a black polymer, 'non slip' soft grip. The stake knives have stainless steel handles.

The Santoku and Partoku knives come with oval indents that are meant to allow food to release from the blade. All knives feature forged bolsters for better balance and to keep fingers from running up on the blade.

You get the following knives:

7.75" chef knife

7" Santoku (slice, dice, chop and mince)

8" Slicer

3.5" Parer

3" Peeler

7.75" Bread

5" Partoku (smaller than the Santoku, combines the convenience of a paring knife with the versatility of the Santoku)

I have had this set of knives for over a year now and still love them. I use them several times each week for making meals and they have stayed quite sharp. It only takes a few seconds and a few swipes along the sharpening blade every time I pull a knife out of the block, and I can cut through a potato as easily as I can cut through butter. I too use the santoku knife more than the others as it is a great size and feels very well-balanced for slicing and chopping. Having previously used cheaper knives, I wanted to see if it really was worth the money to buy a set like this. I can say without a doubt that this has been an excellent investment and I highly reccommend this set of knives.

The majority of the blades arrived in great condition. The Chef's knife, the 5" Santoku, and the paring knife all had notches in the blades and required me to sharpen with a whetstone before use. The knives feel good in my hands, and slide right through a full sized watermelon, hard veggies, or a steak with ease. Someone else likely would have returned the knives because of the notches, but I did not because I was able to get them out and get the blade into better condition than the manufacturer. The metal plate over the knife block should be of concern... if you are trying to put away a knife and accidentally stick it into the metal you could damage the knife. I do not feel as though these knives will last long, but for now as long as I maintain the cutting edge they should serve their purpose.

Thanks Amazon for bringing this product to us...this is a very nice set of flatware that I had not seen in the stores. The pictures do not do the set justice. There is a brushed appearance to a portion of the handles and a shiny portion as well. For me, the true test of flatware is the weight. I don't like flimsy, lightweight flatware--and this set has a very comfortable weight and feel in your hand. It's a must buy.

Looks great, hefty but not heavy. Seems to do well in the dishwasher. Perfect for our everyday use.

The knives are a bit longer than the rather small space in the drawer divider.

Norpro 1281 Grapefruit Spoons, Set of 4

I was looking for a set of decent grapefruit spoons for everyday use. I had read reviews on some of the other spoons here on Amazon that said some types can be too thin or cheap feeling, others were too sharp and uncomfortable. Because of the lower price, I chose this 4 pack of Norpro spoons and found them to be just what I needed and even better than I expected.

They have a simple, sleek design that is comfortable and easy to hold they're a nice weight. They do their job freeing the grapefruit sections from the peel easily, and aren't going to hurt your lips unless you're being careless. And the spoon bowl is a good size for scooping bite-sized portions, unlike more narrow styles. They look nice and blend with my other flatware. I liked them a lot.

To anyone looking for an inexpensive but quality grapefruit spoon set, I would recommend these.

Hamilton Beach 74250 Electric Carving Knife

I purchased this knife to replace a Hamilton Beach electric with swivel blades and a carry type grip with pull up trigger that I have used for many years. I could no longer find that style so went with the "wand" style now sold by almost everyone. This knife set included a guide for bread slicing.

First, this knife was very effective cutting our Turkey for Xmas. No issues on meat. The knife was less effective on the softer items and turned our fresh baked loaf of bread into stuffing material. So +1 for meat and -1 for bread.

Second, this knife is EXTREMELY uncomfortable to use more than seconds at a time. The trigger is awkward and hard to hold in the "on" position in the best of circumstances. When the unit is slippery (e.g. from juices on the meat being carved) it slides back in the hand making operation of the switch almost impossible for someone with adult male hands. With large carving tasks, like the above mentioned Turkey, I need to periodically set the unit down to allow the pain to subside before resuming. The design is ergonomically challenged.

The blades clean-up very well in the dishwasher. The cord is long enough that the knife can be used for either side of the cutting board. This knife would have received 4 stars if it wasn't so difficult to use comfortably. And really, why do you buy and electric knife? A good alternative (albeit more $$) would have been the Hoffritz HZEK1 Electric Knife, but Amazon has apparently discontinued that brand.

This carving set is great for all types of meat...very sharp and clean cuts. I love the speed and cleanliness of the cuts. I wish I could find another like it, as the first one was lent out, and never returned to me. All-in-all a super carving knife set. AAA+++

Already owning two Henckels Twin Pro-S 5-inch serrated knives, I was curious how this one compared. It was deeply discounted at a local box store, so I bought one. It is slightly different than the one pictured on Amazon, as mine has an ergonomic handle, but is still called Premio 5-inch serrated. One big difference between the two, and it's an important one--the Premio is made in China (using German stainless steel) and the Twin Pro S is precision forged, ice hardened and made in Germany. Both have heft and cut through vegetables (particularly tomatoes) with ease. After that, the Twin Pro S leaves the Premio in the dust. It does a much better job cutting through tougher foods, particularly meat. It's true the Twin Pro S costs much more, but they can frequently be found on Ebay and other sites at very good prices. The Premio still gets put to use and does a good job, but only on foods I know it can handle. A five-inch serrated knife is indispensable in the kitchen--I feel privileged to now own three!

Oster Tall Can Openers with Knife Sharpeners

It does everything it's supposed to do. It's well-balanced and works fine even with large cans. I like the auto-stop feature so I can start opening the can and it will be ready when I come back to it when I'm in a rush. The knife sharpener works well, too. Would buy it again.

My order was processed very quickly. I receivced my can opener in a timely manner. However, I am beyond disapointed in the quality. The opener wont take large cans and you have to force it to open the small ones. I dont have the time or patience at the end of the day to fight with this $29.74 dollar toy. Knife sharpener didnt work either. I have gone back to the old fashion hand crank can opener. It works for me and I know the job will get done...shoppers beware. See item below:

I purchased this item a few months ago and did not write a review at that time. I decided to write it now because it so infuriates me whenever I use it! Why? The noise level is terrible the cutting blade likes to catch the paper on each can which means the paper gets stuck & I have confetti the magnet is choosy: some tops it holds others it won't. I had not had an electric can-opener for years but back 3 decades ago when I did have one it worked beautifully. If I had kept all the paperwork I would have sent this one back. SO do remember to do that else you'll be stuck like I am.

I really love the finish, quality and weight, but the sizes are enormous! It's hard to tell a difference between the fork sizes. It's been a while since I bought flatware, so I don't know if this is 'the new size' everyone is putting out. I don't like a fork that feels like the size of a pitch fork.

I received the Ulu Knife as a gift from someone that traveled to Ketchikan, Alaska. Initially I stored it away as a novelty. Trudeau Cutting Mats, Set of 4

Love them! These mats are a wonderful addition to my kitchen. I've tried many different kinds of mats but these are far superior to anything I've purchased. I take very good care of my knives and these mats stand up well to slicing and chopping without dulling the edges. And the fact that they will not slide around is terrific. Black & Decker CO100 Spacemaker Traditional Multi-Purpose Can Opener, White

If you have a recessed under-cabinet surface like I have, with a 1 1/2 inch skirt, nothing provided with the unit will enable you to mount it. The spacers are insufficient and the screws are too short, and nowhere in the documentation is there a cure. But before you go crazy trying to find screws and spacers long enough to jerry-rig a mount, as so many have done, call Black and Decker customer service and get parts. They know about the problem and have long screws and mounts to correctly mount the unit.

I haven't yet been able to try mine, so I don't know how good it is. But whoever is responsible for the absence 0f longer screws or advice on how to get them ought to be skinned.

The Amazon.com process, super deal, and availability for this unit were enough to sell me, but there were also other factors.

Initially I was becoming desperate as there were very few choices and none locally on this island out in the middle of the Pacific ocean.

First I needed a replacement for my 15 year old underconter machine.

Second Nothing that sets on the counter is welcome in my kitchen unless there is no other way.

Third I read all of the reviews of all existing in the market place machines.

Nobody really liked any of them for a variety of reasons not related to opening cans.

Fourth the reviews of this machine by all concerned were better than for other machines.

The bag ripper and sharpener are wasted on me I am far too tall to use them and the sharpening steel and fillet knife are too handy anyway.

YES SHARPENING STEELS WORK REALLY WELL AS THEY LEAVE THE PERFECT EDGE FOR PAPER AND MEAT WHEN USED ON CARBON STEEL BLADES. You already know that you only use one knife in your kitchen for everything short of chopping. If you lost it you would be devestated.

BUT IT WORKS WHICH IS BETTER THAN THE OTHERS. My old presto worked a lot better but it was made in the U.S.A. and that is a hard act to follow. For a Chinese can opener this one is pretty good.

Today that is as good as it is going to get for stuff you can buy over the counter and if you want a better one you will have to get the commercial hand crank $300 wall mount one that will pull the top off anything all day long for a hundred years.

I AM PLEASED WITH IT AND WILL REMAIN SO UNTIL IT FAILS AND BY THEN ALL CANS WILL HAVE RIP TOPS LIKE CAMPBELLS SOUP.

I had a Rival under the cabinet can opener that was terrific. It had a button to push to swing it up and out of the way when not in use. The Black and Decker is larger but fits well under the cabinet. So far it has proved to be very effecient. I haven't tried the bag opener yet but all in all it is a good product.

seems to work fine as a can opener but very loud/grindy sounding motor. I really do not like the fold down front cover and would not have bought this item had the listing made it clear to me that there was a fold down front cover. the last Spacesaver can opener from B & D that we had the entire opener rotated out of view for a closed, smooth surface when not in use.

also, I've had numerous Spacesaver items coffee makers, can openers, etc., over the years and not a single one of them used the same hole pattern for mounting. this one was no different. had to drill 4 new holes in the counter even though I was replacing a B & D Spacesaver can opener with a B & D Spacesaver can opener. why the heck can't B & D get smart about this simple stuff and use a common template for their mounting for a given product line??? seems SO common sense.

sorry, not at all impressed with this product and I'm being generous giving it 3 stars.

I was hesitant about buying this knife because the reviews really weren't that great, but I decided to go for it. This is actually my favorite knife in the kitchen now, and I honestly use it every day, multiple meals, and I chop and slice everything with it. It has dulled a tiny bit---but SERIOUSLY I have used it a lot. It is still sharp enough to slice right through my finger nail without any effort, and I don't have wimpy thin finger nails either---so make sure you watch your fingers when using this knife--I have had a few close calls. I am going to purchase more knives from this line.
