Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin L 7-Inch Household Shears
The description of the scissors is, unfortunately, wrong, both here and on the J.A. Henckels website. These 7" scissors are actually only 7.5" from tip to the end of the handle instead of the 10.5" described. Thus, the cutting blades are only 3.25" long. These are the usual high quality Henckels scissors, but if you are looking for longer cutting blades, try the longer 9 1/2" model, model 41300-251.The scissors are just OK. Older Henckels scissors were made much better -but then they were made in Germany. No doubt these were made in China.Buy Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin L 7-Inch Household Shears Now
Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin Pure Potato Masher
Most mashers have a short handle and the curving wire at the bottom. This is nearly a foot long, has a comfortable handle, and is designed so that one can not only mash by pushing down, but also by pushing to the side of the pot. Sturdy, comfortable, sleek, and well worth the money. After getting this one, I also gave one as a Christmas gift.I did not know this two man figured German Henckels is made in China. The product is strong and heavy. No workmanship issues with the item I received.

We are dancing the Mashed Potato now. No pieces to separate or break. We purchased this as a replacement for a similar masher with a plastic handle that eventually wanted to slip off every time it was used. This solid instrument is excellent design for getting to every last bit in the pot.Messermeister Meridian Elite 3-Piece What a Steel Knife Set
This is the second set of these knives I've purchased this one as a gift for my son. These are excellent knives that hold their edge well and respond to honing quickly. Much better than other brands I've tried. The Messermeister knife set is a good choice for someone who needs that big and small knife in their kitchen. The sharpening steel is really handy to give your knives that touch up when they seem a little dull. I use it with my other knives as well. I was, however, slightly disappointed that the Messermeister knives didn't hold their edge as well as I thought they would and it's not like I cut through tough stuff. I use them mostly for vegetables and sometimes trimming meat. The handles feel good and are of quality workmanship but I do wish the handle on the small knife were a little bigger around for better grip. All in all I am pleased with the set.

Core Bamboo 6-Piece Utensil Set, Natural
In an effort to be more environmentally friendly, I've begun to purchase more products made from environmentally sustainable materials. This includes bamboo. I liked the concept of Core Bamboo products. They are attractive and supposedly designed for everyday use.I cook a lot so I need utensils that can hold up. I've had my Core Bamboo utensil assortment for about six-seven months. After hand washing them only (these are not meant for a dishwasher), the utensils are showing considerable wear. The pretty shine that the utensils had is gone in places. Where the shiny varnish has gone, I do not know. Probably in my food. There are also cracks forming throughout the wood on several utensils. While the utensils seem stable now, I know that I would not be happy if I found wood splinters in my food or mouth.
So my assessment of these utensils is very much mixed. They were gorgeous for the first four months of use and still are practical. If you use them frequently, however, they experience significant wear and tear. I have plastic and metal utensils on their fifth or sixth year of use. I don't know if these will make it to one year let alone two years.
I purchased my Core Bamboo utensil assortment at Big Lots for around twelve dollars. Big Lots also sells individual Core Bamboo products.
These utensils are made in China.Purchased these to replace our well-worn wooden utensils that had seen better days. Overall, it's a great set. A few of the items were a bit rough in areas--small splinters around slots, for example, so I've docked a star there. Otherwise, though, they're sturdy, function as expected, and clean up easily. Too bad they're not dishwasher safe, as well, but they're worth the effort of handwashing.

I found this utensil set to include all the go-to items I need in my kitchen. No matter what dish I'm cooking, there's always a need for one (or more) of these utensils! I wash them gently and they're holding up splendidly! One of the utensils was so thin that it broke immediately. The rest are great. Love cooking with bamboo.Pure Komachi 2 Series Citrus Knife
I have several of these knives....bread knife, paring, slicing. I love the quirky colors, they make me giggle....But even more, I love the usefulness, the sharpness of the blades, the ease of cleaning AND the great price.
After the horrible flooding of New Orleans...and the loss of all my "good knives" to the 11 feet of mud and water in my kitchen, I decided I wanted pretty, fun, and, of course, useful in my life. These fit the bill.
Enjoy!I originally purchased this knife a year ago from Williams Sonoma. I loved this knife so much I wanted to purchase more for gifts, because all my friends commented on how great a knife this is. I was delighted when I found the knife on Amazon, because Williams Sonoma no longer carries the knife. I bought 5 knives this year for christmas gifts. All my friends were thrilled that I was able to find it, and they luv it. It slices through citrus like butter. You'll not be dissapointed.

We have had this for a year or two now, and it still works well. It's light and fairly sharp for its age (never resharpened it). We don't have a dish washing machine, so I can't attest to its longevity under that type of washing. The non stick coating won't last forever, but I can say it will last a few years, anyway.
We mainly use this knife on lime, lemon, sandwiches, tomatoes, etc.
bottom line-
can't beat it for the price. don't hesitate if it looks right to you.

Generally speaking, all of the Komachi knives are amazing. This knife is great not only for cutting fruit but is great for day to day cutting jobs. The serrated edge does make it limited with some veggies but for the most part it glides through anything.Highly recommend, they stay sharp a long time (at least over a year).

Rada Cutlery Wedding Register Gift Set, 4 Piece Boxed Gift Set, Made in USA
My husband and I received a set of Rada knives as a wedding gift over 20 years ago that are still going strong. We like our Rada knives so well that we have given many sets of these as gifts to friends and family over the years. They are always impressed with the quality of these knives as well and usually call us up wanting to know where they can get more of them. Rada knives sharpen easily and stay sharp longer that other knives. They are THE BEST knives we have ever owned, they are a great value, and best of all they are made in the good ole' US-of-A and come with a lifetime gaurantee. Once you have owned and used Rada knives you will find anything else to be sub-par.FYI from the maker's website Rada Cutlery is proudly manufactured in Waverly, Iowa. Rada Mfg. Co. has been making kitchen knives and utensils since 1948. Rada blades are hand sharpened for a razor sharp edge. They are made of surgical quality T420 high carbon stainless steel and hollow ground to ensure a precision concave surface for maximum edge retention. Lifetime Guarantee: "Rada Mfg. Co. will replace any product manufactured by our company returned to us due to defects in materials or workmanship."These are the best knives I've ever owned. I bought these as a wedding gift and the bride loved them!

I have used Rada cutlery for a dozen years, after finding a tiny set at a hospital gift shop. I have given this cutlery as gifts for years, including to terrific cooks, who cherish their pieces. This cutlery is thin and lightweight, and may require an adjustment if you are used to heavy knives that pin your foot to the floor if you drop them. These knives are elegant, sharp and have a stainless blade that holds an edge well and is easy to care for. Style points are deducted for the aluminum handles, but the grip is secure and the construction (American design and manufacture) impeccable. Do not wash in dishwasher, as handles will discolor. I personally enjoy the curved parers, long slicer, peeler, etc. Always pleased with Amazon service. I have no relationship to Amazon or Rada..enjoy both. This set was purchased for my nieces wedding shower. This set is my favorite because it has the 4" butcher knife. My personal favorite. It stays rigid through any cut and is a great length. RADA knives in general are a much better knife than the price states. They stay sharp, sharpen easily with the knife sharpener and will last for years. My family first bought them through a fundraiser and never looked back. You won't go wrong with these knives.Want Rada Cutlery Wedding Register Gift Set, 4 Piece Boxed Gift Set, Made in USA Discount?

I bought these spoons a few months ago because some of my old (non-stainless steel, I think) spoons were rusting.I've been using these on a regular basis and washing them in the dish washer with non-citris soap, and they've been fine. No rusting. I'd recommend these spoons to my friends.DO NOT buy this spoon set.
They are made of stainless steel, but they got rusty after washed just once.
I could not believe this poor quality.

A bit disappointed in these spoons. They are oddly shaped. Thin, cheap feeling. The edges aren't smooth...I wouldn't say they are sharp, like I don't feel like they are in any way dangerous, but you could probably gut a mean melon with them. The forks I purchased from the same company, for around the same price, were actually quite nice...so I expected something similar, but oh well.Gave the product two stars because they still function properly. If for whatever reason I couldn't eat cereal with them, they'd have received one star. But these are better than nothing, and also better than the thick plastic spoons I was using before.

Sani Safe Brand Cooks Knife
I researched all the knives the experts recommend Henckel, Schilling, etc. and found myself totally confused. I didn't need a full set of knives and only wanted a 8 to 10 inch chef's knife so buying a set seemed a waste, yet purchasing even 1 chef's knife from a big name brand would run me $80-100 with shipping. Then I saw a segment on the TODAY SHOW where they talked about how you could outfit an entire kitchen for $200 including a few of these Russel knives with the white handles. Mine cost under $25 and is sharp as a razor. I am thrilled with it and glad I saved so much. Would definitely recommend this knofe and thing I will buy a few more sizes in the future.i am no chef but i love to cook. this knife makes you feel like a chef when u use it. it is sharp, thin and can bend. must buy itemBuy Sani Safe Brand Cooks Knife Now
When I made the decision to upgrade my kitchen knives I had a difficult time settling on my large chef's knife or cook's knife as Dexter Russell calls this. I read as much as I could about kitchen knives at discussion forums like Chowhound and after reading the original review here and the handful of reviews of some of the similar models I rolled the dice on this.I really like the light weight of this knife and having used a smaller 7" chef's knife for many years appreciate the nimbleness. The white handle provides a natural grip that gives you solid control over the knife. This cook's knife just has a substantial feel to it while not feeling heavy.
Update: The knife stained after cutting my first onion with it. Have since learned that carbon steel knives naturally stain to prevent rust. The product description describes this knife as stain-free and I ended up returning it. I stand by my comments as far as the handling of the knife but the staining may come as a surprise to some people who buy this.
Global GSF-22 - 4 1/2 inch, 11cm Utility Knife
I have been an avid amateur cook for 25 years and have worked with a wide variety of kitchen tools during that period. Knives that I have utilized range from the "cheap but effective" to the finest products from Henckels. But the knives I use daily are the Globals', and the one that I cannot be without is this one. Although it is designated by the manufacturer as a Utility knife, it is simply the best paring knife I have ever used, and I've gone through a lot of them. Its razor sharpness is easily maintained, it has a perfect heft and balance, and it is exactly the "right" size and shape. It just feels great. Sorry if I sound so effusive -I am not connected with the Global Corporation in any way -but I would recommend this knife to any serious cook who has exacting standards in kitchenware.I ordered this knife in order to determine whether a larger set of Global knives was in my future. Although it's a nice knife, it's not the best imaginable. I'm an avid cook, but it comes out of my spare time, so I'm looking for comfortable knives that are easy to use and clean; this one isn't as comfortable as I'd like.PROS: It's really, really sharp I don't spend a lot of time honing or sharpening, and it held an edge well for almost three years of steady use. Given the sharpness and thin blade, it's good for cutting firmer things than you might expect for a knife this size. It's very easy to clean, and the steel comes clean quickly, presumably because it's so dense. The blade's a handy size, making this a true utility knife good for lots of little tasks.
CONS: The handle is surprisingly thin, more blade-like than I expected, and I find it uncomfortable to push down on. As well, the handle is a wee bit short (my hands are medium-sized, not particularly large), so the grip isn't as secure as it might be. And, despite both the above, it's a bit heavy.
Overall, it's a really nice knife, easy to clean, doesn't need babying, and it's freakishly sharp. However, it's not as comfortable to use as I would look for in a whole set of knives I planned to have for many years.

This item (utility knife) actually was for a friend... a fellow foodie.Once youve used any Global knife you feel as though all other knives in comparison fail at their job. I'm the owner of 4 Globals thus far I will purchase more in the next year, but this paring knife is a great starter to begin with... even if its the only Global you get you'll see how versitile it is & will go on to recommend to friends and family.

First of all I would like to applaud Global for a great product and Amazon for fast shipping. Now lets talk about the knife, at first I was a little worried about how thin the handle was, and I had read that people thought the handle was thin and uncomfortable. However, I have large hands and I think that the knife is quite comfortable. I used it today when cutting onions, garlic, shallots and numerous other things and found it rather comfortable and it really did not feel like I had anything in my hand. In addition to this, the balde is extra sharp and it is a breeze to cut through anything. I would reccomend this knife to anyone looking for a great quality, smaller blade utility knife. Plus you arent going to beat that price. Have fun with your knife!Want Global GSF-22 - 4 1/2 inch, 11cm Utility Knife Discount?

The search for some decent flatware was daunting, to say the least. I would look at an item, the reviews, and end up going to another. After several searches, over a span of time, I stumbled upon this set. The reviews were good, and the price was also better than I had hoped.Upon receiving this set, I was pleasantly surprised to note that the serrated knives were SHARP! I managed to nick, myself, with one of them. They look, expensive, but they really are a bargain! I would imagine they will hold up, given they are 18/0, as stamped on each handle. It is a pleasure, using this set.I really like this set. Unique styling and a substantial feel. They improve any meal by making the presentation more bold.

Very classy and nice quality flatware set! I've already received multiple complements from people, telling me how nice and modern they look. Very sleek and modern, which is what's great about them. Even though the way the knife handle is designed, it takes up more room in my cabinet, but using them to cut is very comfortable on the hand, which is a acceptable trade-off.Want Ginkgo President 20-Piece Stainless Steel Flatware Set, Service for 4 Discount?

I have both the orange-colored painted set and also the unpainted set. The paint job on these is not done very well and I feel it makes these look "cheap" compared to the non-painted set. Don't expect the bamboo knife to work like a metal knife. It works fine for spreading, but not so much for cutting.I am allergic to nickel i thought this bamboo ware was a good idea...as long as you dont try to cut anything( using the fork to stablize the meat for instance)then it might be ok... ten bucks though ?
I will try plastic next....

Chef's Choice M2100 Commercial Diamond Hone Electric Sharpener
The 2100 is the top-end commercial version of the Chef's Choice electric sharpeners. According to the manufacturer (EdgeCraft) it is intended for "busy commercial kitchens." It is a bit larger (about an inch in each dimension) and heavier than the consumer models but still compact enough to leave on the counter top. The sharpening module is removable. It can be run through a dishwasher; therefore, if you sharpen a dirty knife, you can clean the sharpener. You can also purchase replacement sharpening modules.I purchased this for home use, so I will compare it to the consumer models and comment on the price.
The 2100 uses a 3-stage sharpening system. The first two stages use diamond abrasives and the third stage uses flexible stropping disks. You can achieve several edge configurations by using or skipping certain stages. There is good information available on the Chef's Choice Web site () that I won't repeat here.
The sharpening unit itself appears to be about the same size as the consumer versions. The sharpening stages are like those on the M120 consumer model. Both have 2 sharpening stages and a stropping stage. (By comparison, the M130 has one sharpening stage, a stropping stage, and a steeling stage.)
The 2100, like the other Chef's Choice sharpeners does a very good job of sharpening knives. In terms of results, you just can't beat manual sharpening -that is, if you have the right equipment, you know how to use it, and you do use it. I have a good manual sharpening system, but it is a bit time consuming to set up, so I tend to do it only when I have several knives that need sharpening. The result is that at any given time, I may pick up a knife that is not quite as sharp as I would like. With an electric sharpener on the counter top, I can give a knife a quick touch up whenever it needs it. The result is that all my knives stay very sharp all the time.
The real question, I think, is whether the extra cost is justified for home use. Roughly speaking, the 2100 is four times the price of the M120 or M130. In fact, the cost of a replacement sharpening module for the 2100 is only slightly less than the cost of a new M120. I expect that the abrasives in the consumer units should last about as well as the sharpening module in the 2100, which is rated at 5000 sharpening cycles. If you sharpen 20 knives a week, that's about 5 years. I'd guess most people are more likely to sharpen 5-10 knives (or less) per week. That translates to 10-20 years. From an economic standpoint, it makes better sense to buy an M120 or M130 and send it back to EdgeCraft for refurbishment when the abrasives wear out or just buy a new one.
Of course, there are those pesky non-economic factors. I am often willing to spend more money for something that will take more use and abuse and which is likely to last at least as long as I will. I am very happy with the 2100 as long as I don't think about how much I paid for it.Just out of the box you are up and running. Sharpened all our knives(14) in less than 15 minutes. Blades are extremely sharp and no scratching of the surface.

Forschner Fibrox 7-pc. Cutlery Roll Knife Set
I bought this for culinary school last September so I've had lots of time to really evaluate the set.chef knife I'm a 6' 200lb guy with big hands and I find this knife unwieldy. 10" is just too big for my taste and I think many people would find it clunky. 8" would have been a much better size for the majority of buyers. The quality of the knife is fine, the edge comes sharp, has decent curvature for chopping and steels well and is easy to resharpen on a stone.
paring knife too long for a paring knife. It extends an inch further than you want for most paring operations (peeling, turning). It's nearly big enough to be called a utility knife. Luckily I also bought the 3 piece Victorinox paring set, which has a shorter paring knife. The knife quality is fine again but why did they choose this length?
boning knife this would be classed as "stiff", which is great for stuff like beef, veal and lamb. For chicken it's ok. For fish it's fairly useless. You need flex to fillet and it's not long enough. Get a longer, full flex knife if you need to do fish. It sharpens well, holds an edge somewhat well. I'm not amazed by this knife for butchery work.
bread knife great edge for bread. This one would actually benefit from being 2" longer, whereas the chef/paring above are too long. A little more curvature would have been useful too. A pretty good knife for slicing bread, trimming sandwich crusts, etc.
carving pretty decent and reasonably good length. Longer would be better but it's acceptable. Good edge and good geometry for it's intended use.
steel works fine with these knives, a bit short especially for the carving knife. Watch it with the longer knives.
the roll it's light, the pockets for the knives are just ok. Paring knives fall out while some other knives are too hard to slip in. It has a few pockets inside for spoons, peeler, etc. You can't expect much for a roll that basically comes free with the knives.
So overall, chef and paring are overly long whereas the bread isn't long enough. The carver is acceptable, the boning knife is maybe too stiff for broad use. A semi-stiff would be a good compromise since most people don't need a full stiff boning for beef but do need some flex for chicken and fish.
The knife quality is excellent for the money, some of the knife selection is questionable. If you are comfortable choosing each knife I would suggest that instead. This is a great set of kitchen knives at the price. Forschner Fibrox knives have been top-rated by a lot of different groups, including Cook's Illustrated; I liked them even before I knew that, just because of the "Victorinox" stamp on the blades, just like my childhood Swiss Army Knives.
These knives handle beautifully and cut amazingly well; I've bought five or six of the "paring' knife in this set over the years (my dog likes to chew the handles up, for some reason). When I wanted to upgrade to a full set of kitchen knives and get a honing steel, I got this set, and it was a perfect purchase: the boning knife made dismembering my first whole chicken an almost comically easy process (although the directions in the Joy of Cooking helped too).
The knives are light and somewhat flexible, and they're made with stamped rather than forged steel, but they still function excellently despite that -they give forged function at stamped price.
Drawbacks:
Some people may find the largest knife in this set, the 10" Chef's knife, a little big and a little lightweight for the size -a slightly heavier, slightly shorter knife might be a little bit more easy to use.
The set also comes with a portable "knife bag" which is probably useless unless you're part of a traveling chef's road show, but if you're using a magnetic knife strip or buying a non-traditional knife block (like the Kapoosh brand knifeblocks, though the 10" chef knife might not fit into those), and don't want the wooden knife block most other knife sets come with, this set gives a great selection of excellent-quality basic kitchen knives at what I found to be an unbeatable price. A perfect choice for a first knife set if you don't want a wooden knife block for whatever reason.
EDIT: After having used these knives for about a year, I have to say that everything above is still valid, but they do dull a little quickly -you might want to grab an electric knife sharpener to keep them well-honed. Alternatively, if you want to teach yourself how to hand-sharpen knives, these would probably be a good set to practice on.

My husband is a sushi chef and I bought 2 knives, shiroko kasumi yanagi and hammered damascus J chef knife gyuto, for him. I didnt know about a Japanese knife so I read all reviews. I thought my purchase was great and still I think so.They are great knives for the price.
I ordered them on Saturday and received them on Wednesday. What a great shipping!
When I opened the UPS box, they wrapped with a paper wrap and a box each. Super Duper safety!
I love their cares for the knife.
At the first day of using them at the Restaurant, as my husband words, the knives were really sharp, strong, and super duper great!
He said they were well balanced and nice shaped knives and shiroko kasumi yanagi was good as the same as his masamoto VG10. Also they look gorgeous and fancy. Anyway, I'd like to recommend them to everyone especially a sushi chef. This knife just came in and I started using it right away. Beatiful sashimi, clean and neat. I haven't had it long enough to sharpen, but will right another review in about a couple of weeks.I work in a sushi restaurant and asked for recommendations from the other sushi chef. They all pointed me in the direction of $300-$900 knives. Not willing to spend that amount of money, I found this knife. They were impressed that I was about to purchase a knife at this quality for the price. Now, my knife, is the envy of the other sushi chefs at work. The knife came with a beautiful case, a small bottle of oil (for preventing rust), and detailed care instructions. I will be buying more knives from this company.
MADE IN USA! Liberty Tabletop "Pinehurst" 18-10 Flatware Set 65 Piece
I like this pattern a lot. The hammered finish is very nice looking. The stainless is excellent quality. I have had the set for several months now and I have not seen any rust spots at all.My main reservations are that the teaspoon and salad forks seem smaller than normal. Also the knife handles are not as heavy as a solid forged knife. I also worry that the handles might come loose at some point. Overall... the Liberty set feels lighter, smaller and cheaper than the less expensive Ginkgo set I had before.
I was also disappointed in the polish work of the Liberty set. Many of the forks have sander marks on the sides of the metal instead of polished to a smooth finish. I ended up polishing some of them with my own Dremel tool to make them shine. (You should not have to do your own silversmithing on a brand new set...)
Frankly I preferred the Ginkgo set I had before this one... except for the fact that the Ginkgo set was made from 18/0 steel that rusted frequently. The Ginkgo set just feels more substantial and the finish work on the Ginkgo set is vastly superior. (And the Ginkgo set is 1/2 the cost.) The only advantage that the Liberty Pinehurst has is superior 18/10 steel that does not rust in the dishwasher.
I think that Liberty should have done a better job of finishing & polishing edges of the forks & spoons. I think that Liberty should consider making the set larger and more substantial like the Ginkgo...
Joseph Joseph Scoot Pizza Wheel with Integrated Blade Guard
My husband loves the "pizza wheel" design for pizza cutters. We had one before this one that worked great, but the wheel was plastic and eventually got too dull to use. I got this one as a replacement about 6 months ago, but it really is impossible to clean. I wish it didn't have the blade guard, because the guard just attracts pizza gunk that can't be cleaned off. I just put the Zyliss 30820 in my shopping cart. I hope I like it better than I did this one.Got this because we have limited space in our kitchen and was looking for something compact. This wheel is great small, sharp and safe. We have curious toddlers and so appreciate the cover over the sharp wheel. Only issue it is a bit painful to clean as you have to rotate the wheel in order to get soap and water all over for a full clean.Buy Joseph Joseph Scoot Pizza Wheel with Integrated Blade Guard Now
Pizza wheel is a solid utensil! It's very sturdy and serves it's pizza-slicing purpose very well. We especially like the blade cover so we can keep it in our drawer with other utensils and not have to worry about safety.Read Best Reviews of Joseph Joseph Scoot Pizza Wheel with Integrated Blade Guard Here
I like the way it cuts, but pizza gunks up the blade, which goes up inside the green half. The Joseph and Joseph site simply says to throw it in the dishwasher. Yuck. Anybody have a suggestions? Google hasn't found a solution, yet, so on the counter it sits.Want Joseph Joseph Scoot Pizza Wheel with Integrated Blade Guard Discount?
I used to use a cutter with a handle, then I switched to another brand hand held. I love this handheld cutter because it is dishwasher cleanable, no parts to open (except for the guard) when cleaning. Better than the last handheld I had which broke quickly because it was difficult to open to clean.Shun 22-Slot Bamboo Knife Storage Block
I would not ordinarily think of posting a video review for a knife block, but this one is so attractive that I wanted you to be able to see it. There are so many knife blocks sold by Amazon and I found it a daunting task to try to choose one. I had a couple of smaller knife blocks and then acquired another 6 knives Ginsu Shoku 05707 Japanese Stainless Steel Cutlery Set with Crimson Colored Handles and didn't have room for the magnetic hanger that came with them. I also didn't have the space on my counter for three smaller knife blocks. So I decided to get one that would replace the smallest one that I had, with enough space to accommodate the extra knives. I spent probably a week going back and forth between the different options, but I'm glad I finally settled on this one. (A knife block, after all, is something that I'll probably have for a gazillion years and have to look at every day!)It has the little metal Shun emblem on the bottom that you don't see on the Amazon photo but you'll see it in my video. The color is pretty close to what you see here, but if you use just a little Joyce Chen Bamboo Wood Oil, 8 Ounces which is a food-grade mineral oil it just brings out the wood grain and makes it even more beautiful. Bamboo is so attractive to begin with, but the oil just brings out the patterns in the bamboo. I bought this oil to use on my bamboo cutting board over a year ago and it works very well. I think you'll see that it adds something to the attractiveness of this block. And you use so little that the 8 oz bottle will probably last like forever.
The slots are nice and wide (one of my old knife blocks, the one I re-cycled, had rather narrow slots which didn't work with the big knives.) I have a several little paring knives and little utility knives which I put in the bottom 6 slots, but you could just as easily use that for steak knives.
I hope the video gives you a better idea of what this block looks like and helps you to make a decision. After all that time trying to decide, I'm glad that this is the one I ordered.I couldn't decide if this block or the Henckels 22 slot would hold my 2 long 11" Victorinox bread knives, 2 Wusthoff Santokus, and 2 small Chicago Cutlery Santokus plus a couple other knives. I ordered them both and compared them side by side. The back corner of the Henckels is "blocked" so it sits 1" closer to the back wall on the counter than this block. However, I found the Shun bamboo wood block more aesthetically appealing and a nicer finish than the Henckels block. Also, the BIG difference is in the width of the knife slots. This block consistently for just about all slots was wider by 1/8" to 1/4" than the Henckels. For me, this small increase in width made the difference in getting all my knives in the block or not. If you have serious knives, then most of them are probably wide, and need this block. If your knives are narrow then the Henckels block would work fine. Both blocks were identical heighth. The steak knives are stored in a horizontal orientation in the Henckels block compared with this block. The large cleaver slot is towards the bottom of the face with this one, and towards the top of the block with the henckels block. As an added bonus, the 4 slots across the bottom on the Shun block are slightly wider than the Henckels block and therefore can accomodate a knife a little larger than a pairing or steak knife. The Henckels block has the same size slots along the bottom as used in the bottom section for steak knives. The opening for kitchen shears is the exact same width in both blocks, however, the heighth of the opening is less in this block as compared with the Henckels block and fits my cheap shears from Walmart better than the Henckels block did although both worked fine. As far as packaging is concerned, the Shun block is packaged better than the Henckels block. Both blocks have identical rubber feet on the bottom (screwed into the block). I assume both are made in China, (the Henckels is for sure). The Shun block is more expensive here on Amazon but worked better for my knife collection.

I recently bought a Kramer knife that is 2 3/8" wide at the handle. I was hoping, partly based on the reviews, that this block would accommodate it -in addition to my cleaver. No such luck -the slots other than the cleaver slot are only about 2 1/8" wide. If your knives fit in this dimension, it's a very nice block, but I wish the descriptions would give the slot widths.Read Best Reviews of Shun 22-Slot Bamboo Knife Storage Block Here
The product, the Shun22 slot knife block is superb. I do have to be careful entering the knife into the appropriate slot so as not to nick the surface of the bamboo finish. The even darker than expected color of my unit is most handsome. I think the slot numbers are perfect because any more onenings for smaller knives would be superfluous. It has been admired by friends.Want Shun 22-Slot Bamboo Knife Storage Block Discount?
Issues with the blocks I received:The first one of these I ordered arrived with a crack above the kitchen shears slot between 2 of the bamboo-board-columns (for lack of better words) all the way down the back. I think the crack was large enough that you could slide a sheet of paper through it, but I didn't even take the block out of the plastic wrap since I intended to ship it back.
The second block also had a crack on the back above the kitchen shears slot, but this crack was only a couple inches at the bottom between two of the "bamboo-board-columns" and then another inch one column over above that. These cracks also weren't as wide as the crack on the first one. In addition to the cracks, this one also had a dent a few mm in diameter in the top left corner (by the honing rod slot). These are slight nuisances but are not so bothersome as the large crack in the first one. As such I plan to keep this one.
Slot widths:
(I won't make any garauntees on my accuracy)
5 slots are 2 1/8 in. wide
3 slots are 1 5/8 in. wide
5 slots are 1 3/16 in. wide
6 slots are 15/16 in. wide
1 slot is 3 15/16 in. wide
and the other 2 slots are the honing rod and kitchen shears slots
Issues with the block in general:
As mentioned by another reviewer, it would be nice if the slots were wider. I have the Ken Onion by Shun 7-Inch Santoku, and it only fits completely into the cleaver slot. This is frustrating because they could have easily made one of the five 2 1/8" slots another 1/8"-1/4" wider, and then it would have fit. If I end up getting a cleaver, I will probably take a power drill to the block so my Santoku fits in one of the other slots. the only other thing is that the honing rod slot is too close to the kitchen shears slot. A have the Shun Sharpening Steel and the Kershaw Taskmaster Shears, and they fight for the same space so that the shears must sit crooked. This isn't a big deal; it just doesn't look so nice. Since Kershaw and Shun are both made by KAI, I thought maybe they should fit better.(UPDATE: The kitchen shears do fit in fine if inserted with the bottle opener side facing right.)
With all that being said, it still basically does what block should do, and I don't expect it to fall apart.
