Le Creuset Stoneware 9 3/4" Pasta Bowl, White

Le Creuset Stoneware 9 3/4' Pasta Bowl, WhiteI really like these pasta bowls. They are heavy weight and I use them for everything, including pasta. I would have rated them with five stars but they chip rather easily and I'm going to have to replace two of them shortly. I still recommend them, but handle with care.

These versatile items gets used over and over at my house. We eat a lot of one dish pastas or salads, and these look great on a set table or work simply on one's lap while sofa dining in front of the TV. It seems we've gone through a lot of pasta bowls over the years, but these tough workhorses are built to last, and judging from the way they're holding up under a lot of use, I do believe they'll be the last I'll need to purchase. Well worth the extra cost.

Bought this to add to my white dish set. Usually le creuset comes in a box. This was just sent in bubble wrap. I'm surprised that it wasn't broken. May have been the display one at a store but still in good condition.

J.A. HENCKELS INTERNATIONAL 15-Piece Fine Edge Synergy Block Knife Set

J.A. HENCKELS INTERNATIONAL 15-Piece Fine Edge Synergy Block Knife SetThese are the "arm candy" of knives. They're pretty to look at but are essentially useless.

My blades began rusting a day after I used them. I've only had them since Christmas and am shopping for replacements as we speak.

Don't by these.

Whoa...my sisters have this set at their house, which I used extensively last night to cut with. In a word? Terrible.

They have not used them much, and all they had for me was a glass cutting board (I know, terrible). Due to the glass cutting board, I knew these edges, had they been used, would not be terribly sharp.

I made a point of sharpening them on the included steel using the procedure outlined in the manual.

Anyhow, I found myself both struggling and TEARING vegetables when cutting them. To slice red pepper, I was having to pull the remaining portion of the pepper up to tear it off of the piece I *thought* I'd just cut.

Perhaps this is a terribly unfair comparison, as I am used to my Henckels Pro "S" set. But for crying out loud, I didn't think it would be THIS bad.

While I cannot speak for the rest of the Henckels "International" (meaning "Made in Spain, not Germany") line, this set was very much unacceptable. You would literally get a better value buying a Henckels 4-Star Chef's Knife instead of this WHOLE SET. At least you'd get some real use out of it.

The steak knives feel cheap. This is definitely a $60-feeling set, no great "value," in my opinion. I would never, ever, ever buy a Henckels International product after this interlude and will happily return home tonight to my Henkels Pro "S" set...where cutting through ANYTHING is like gliding through soft butter.

Henckel along with manufacturers of other cutlery, utensils, cookware and kitchen accessories always state whether or not you should wash them in a dishwasher. PLEASE pay attention to their instructions! Henckel manufactures a fine product. I always hand wash the knives -as they advise -then dry them immediately and store them safely. I don't want to discount others' reviews but those who have had problems with "rusting" have either not cared for the knives properly or have had a very rare low-quality product they should ask Henckel to replace.

Not everything goes in the dishwasher. Just as with garments, read the label before you wash! :)

Prior to this set I had a cheap Chefmate set for maybe 20 or 30 dollars. After a year or two the handles started to detach, so I decided I needed to buy a better set. Trusting in Henckels name I bought this set. The knives are made in China. Regarding quality, the knives are still holding up great after almost 5 years of use. While it is really recommended to hand wash and dry your kitchen knives, I always put mine in the dishwasher instead. Maybe due to this after about 4 years they started to show some rustmarks, but this turned out to be no big deal. With the help of some "Barkeepers Friend" I was able to quickly and easily remove those marks again.

The knives are "stamped knives", making them rather light in weight. The handles feel good and the set will look nice in your kitchen.

Regarding the material of the blade Henckel does not advertise them as a "carbon blade" but rather as a "stainless steel". I therefore strongly suspect that this is not a carbon steel blade.

After about 5 years despite being able to get rid of the rustmarks, the blades have become worn. Sending them for resharpening is not really worth it and buying a whetstone is almost as much as the set costs by itself. So after close to 5 years it haas come close to where the set needs replacement.

Really good knives that you want to use for 10 or 20 years should be "carbon steel", which can be made much sharper than stainless steel and also hold their edge longer. Still if you want a set that is able to handle your basic daily kitchen duties for the next 5 years and will not break in the process instead of a set for life, you will be perfectly happy. The next step up from this set are carbon steel knives, either stamped or forged, that can run you anywhere from $300 to $1000 for a good set, but those will also last you longer and give you a better cutting experience. For the money this is a great set I was very happy for the time owning it and I therefore recommend it.

Reed & Barton Crescendo II 18/0 Stainless-Steel 65-Piece Flatware Set with Storage Caddy, Service f

Reed & Barton Crescendo II 18/0 Stainless-Steel 65-Piece Flatware Set with Storage Caddy, Service for 12If you like heft and size in your silverware, this is the set for you! Besides the very bright and polished finish, this continental-sized flatware feels great in your hand and is perfect whether you're serving on your best china or your everyday dinnerware. And one of the very best parts? It comes with 12 extra teaspoons. If you're like me, sometimes those pesky spoons slip into the disposal and get chewed up and ragged. No problem with this set, you have 12 opportunities to replace the one you lost! The set also comes packaged in a wooden tray that slips into your kitchen drawer and can be used as a silverware holder for your buffets and potlucks.

I looked everywhere, both on line and in the brick-and mortars for a set I liked. My biggest concern was whether the set in the picture would look and feel as good in hand. I was more than pleased. This is the best, both in value and quality.

This is sturdy, strong, quality flatware with a serious flaw: rust keeps breaking through the knives on the serrated edge! I even diligently followed the directions with the set not to soak the knives and to avoid letting certain foods set on them before washing (which I have never had to do with flatware). But I'm still getting rusty spots on the cutting edge. What a shame.

I read the reviews on this product before I decided to purchase it from Amazon even though some of the reviewers stated they didn't think the stainless was 18/10 as is stated on Amazon's site. It arrived yesterday and upon examination there were, as another reviewer said, no markings stating it was 18/10 either stamped on the flatware it's self or on the packaging. I decided to send an email to Reed and Barton to see if they could shed some light on this discrepancy, and since I also own a another set of their flatware called Hammered stamped with 18/8 I asked about that also. Here's their reply:

Hello, the Crescendo II is not 18/10. It is 18/chrome (0). If the hammered pattern is stamped 18/8 that is what it is. All of our patterns used to be 18/8 then we went to 18/10 now most of our patterns sold in sets are 18/chrome (0).

I intend to email Amazon with this information and return the Crescendo II set I purchased from them. The Hammered set I own that is 18/8 has held up very well (8 years) with no pitting or staining, but then I only use it for special occasions and hand wash it afterward. It's a beautiful set.

The set is "just OK." Not as heavy as I'd expected and I've also noticed (per another reviewer)some rust on the knives. Better to look at what you're buying in person first before ordering online (she said to herself).

Yamazaki Median 5-Piece Place Setting

Yamazaki Median 5-Piece Place SettingI am a pretty big guy and like Euro style continental sized flatware, but these are for giants. It's not just length but the overall heft and width. Way too big. The knife's handle is hollow and super thick. There is no way it would not fall off the plate if carried on it.

Surprisingly poorly finished unlike other Yamazaki sets I have seen. Quality control lacking, my set came with two dinner forks, instead of one dinner and salad forks.

If you're 7 ft and 300 lbs these may be for you.

Wusthof Classic 10-Piece Cooking Couple's Knife Set with Block

Wusthof Classic 10-Piece Cooking Couple's Knife Set with BlockI love these knives. They are truly amazing. My wife and I did a fair amount of research before we bought our set (consumer reports, etc..)and we concluded that Wusthof knives were the best. You might think that they are a bit pricey, but the are worth it. If you have never prepared a meal with a truly fine knife such as a Wusthof, then you are in for a treat. Use these knives once, and you will never want another.

When buying these knives, our biggest problem was deciding between the Classic and the Grand Prix. Although the Grand Prix is slightly more comfortable, I prefer the construction of the Classic. If you inspect the knives, you will see that the Wusthof Classic has a full metal tang with 3 rivets. The Grand Prix, although having the same blade, has a smaller, cylindrical tang that runs the entire handle of the knife. This tang is secured by a single large rivet at the end of the handle. Although I'm sure the Grand Prix is well built, I bought these knives for a lifetime of use and heartier construction of the Classics just appealed to me more.

So, In a nutshell, if you buy Wusthof, you will not be disappointed.

There are really two main competitors in the high-end mainstream kitchen knife market: Henckels and Wusthof. Those who have used both usually have a preference. My preference (and therefore bias you should know about) is for the Wusthofs.

The Wusthof Classic line is the more conservative counterpart to the Grand Prix line. The only difference, however, is the handle style. I personally prefer the Grand Prix, but this is an issue of personal preference. The balance and grip of these knives are as close to perfect as I have found. For those wondering what benefits a higher priced knife provides, one benefit is that the blade (or tang) is one piece all the way through the handle. This makes the blade much stronger, and less likely to snap.

This set includes an 8 inch chef's knife, a 3 ½ inch paring knife, a 6 inch sandwich knife, a 6 inch chef's knife, a 9 inch bread, a 4 ½ inch utility knife, a 5 inch salami knife, a sharpening steel, and an oak block

The 8 inch chef's knife and the 6 inch chef's knife are great knives. Wusthof offers three sizes of chef's knives, 6, 8 and 10 inch. For most home cooks, I think the 8 inch knife is the best choice. The 6 inch is a bit small for bigger jobs, but the 10 inch is too big for most jobs. While the 8 inch isn't perfect for all uses, if you are only buying one size chef's knife (and most people only buy one), this is the one I would recommend. Adding the 6 inch makes the set almost complete.

The Wusthof 4 ½ inch utility knife is a great all-around knife. This is the knife I use for the majority of my small chopping work (when I don't use a Chef's knife).

As for the 3 ½ inch paring knife, this knife falls into the category of overkill for me. Most cooks will get by just fine with the 4 ½ inch utility knife. There is really no notable difference in size for the vast majority of applications between the 3 ½ inch paring knife and the 4 ½ inch utility knife. I prefer the 4 ½ inch utility knife, but the 3 ½ inch paring knife will do the trick.

I have found very few uses for the 6 inch sandwich and the 5 inch salami knives. I prefer the larger size of the chef's knife or the smaller 4 ½ inch utility knife. The knives are just the wrong width and length for most tasks, and fall into the overkill department, except when part of a set.

When it comes to sharpening steels, I have found very little difference between Henckels and Wusthof. As long as you buy a high end steel, you really won't go wrong. Therefore, I shop for this item on price, and Henckels has a price advantage. However as the steel comes with the set, you won't go wrong with this steel.

This set is a great deal, and includes just about the right assortment of knives. Adding the steak knives fills the block perfectly.

At first it was hard to convince my husband, Buster, that we should invest almost all of his weekly take-home pay in a knife set. The price IS a little steep, but these are Quality knives with a Capital Q. I expect to be using them until I am 95 years old, they are that durable and well-made. The knives came safely packaged and each one is a work of art, worthy of being displayed on your kitchen wall rather than stuck into a wood block. But the wood block that came with the knives is also beautiful on the countertop. I have protected mine with a crocheted knife-holder kozy. So far I have used all the knives personally except for the sausage knife. You do have to be careful as these knives truly are razor honed, but if you do cut yourself it heals without much of a scar, as they are SO sharp and make such a clean slice. When deer season rolls around and Buster bags a deer, I will be able to try the sausage knife, as we always have some venison sausage made up. If you want a beautiful work-of-art type of kitchen utensil in your house, then save up and purchase this terrific item.

After much thought about which "great knives" I was finally going to purchase I bought a set of the wusthof classic. I also purchased the ceramic knife sharpener to ensure my sharpening technique. The only knife that cut to any extent was the serrated one. I thought surely there must be something wrong so I sent the knives back to be professionally sharpened, but did not see any improvement. Having cooked for years using all types of knives I am thoroughly disappointed.

P-38 Can Opener

P-38 Can Openerso maybe it's just me. maybe the cans i am trying to open (like any normal can i have every purchased at the grocery store) are just to thick. i cannot get the tip to punch in and in the process, i watch the hinge take the strain. the more i try, the more i am certain i will injure myself long before i get a can open.

in a nutshell, i am not military. i have not been trained on how to use this thing. i can't make it work.

ACTUALLY I THINK THIS IS A P 51 CAN OPENER. Nuthin wrong with THAT. Both US Army issue and both work.

This is a bit bigger than the P38 with two stiffening groves and has the lanyard hole in the other end. Somebody

[ maybe me ] should do a comparison road test. I recommend this can opener.

And WHY does the Army name their can openers after famous WW II fighter planes ?

Zojirushi BB-PAC20 Home Bakery Virtuoso Breadmaker + Stainless Steel Measuring Spoons, 4-Piece Set

Zojirushi BB-PAC20 Home Bakery Virtuoso Breadmaker + Stainless Steel Measuring Spoons, 4-Piece Set + Accessory KitI received the virtuoso bread machine and was expecting the first loaves to be not that great. However, much to my surprise, as i have never made a loaf of bread in my life and so these are the first ever, the first loaf (organic whole wheat) came out good, not great. Why? I used olive oil and did not put it with the other liquids, i put it last with the dry ingredients. The bread tasted great, but the shape was a little off because of my mistake. Now, on to the next loaf (organic whole wheat banana) and i made a few changes to the recipe and made sure i put all liquids first. The loaf came out almost perfect! It was shaped really nice with a smooth top and we sliced it into a regular loaf of bread. This loaf tasted better than the first but the only reason it was not perfect, i only put one banana and thus, the banana flavor was weak. Although the banana was weak, the taste was great and my kids love it. The reason we bought this machine is because our children go through a loaf a day and we were buying organic whole wheat from Whole Foods and so you can imagine the costs. With the virtuoso, we cut the price in half per loaf, it taste just as good if not better and we control the ingredients.

Ease of use? We found the machine to be very easy to use and the instructions are easy to follow. As long as you measure correctly and put the ingredients in the proper order, this machine is very easy to use. Basically you put the liquids first, then the dry ingredients, set the program for the bread you want to bake, close the lid and then press start. It is really that simple. Because the bread pan is made of non-stick material, the bread comes right out without a problem. I cannot stress how easy this machine is to bake a loaf bread. Remember, we have never baked a loaf of bread in our lives. For clean up, it is a breeze. The non stick coating on the bread pan makes it very easy. With warm water and light soap, any residue comes right off.

We understand that there are less expensive bread machines available and so we cannot compare this machine to the others. However, we are very pleased with this machine because it is very easy to use, has many options for various baking items and in our household, it will pay for itself in a few months. Although some may find the unit expensive, it all comes down to what you are looking for in a bread machine. Because we are health conscious and use a loaf a day, we wanted something that was easy to use and would produce a quality product. What we really like, we control the ingredients that will eventually be eaten by us and our children.

Made my third loaf this weekend and they have all turned out great. This replaced a machine I had for years and I expected to have a bit of a learning curve with the new machine but I'm already making some of my 'old favorites' with no problems. So far I'm thrilled!

This is a nice set of utensils. My only complaint is that while I purchased these to use with my non-stick cookware, they do not seem to hold up well to too high of temperatures. Medium high on my stove-top started melting the spoon as I tried to stir against the bottom of the pan. They are fairly sturdy, though and as long as you keep to medium or below, hold up very well.

Global G-56 - 7 inch, 18cm Vegetable Hollow Ground Knife

Global G-56 - 7 inch, 18cm Vegetable Hollow Ground KnifeMy new favorite knife manufacturer! I bought the Global 7" vegetable knife after using the smaller 5 1/2" vegetable knife for six or eight months. The balance and dimpled grip works well for me. The shape of the blade is somewhat similar to a Chinese Chef knife and I find both of the Global Vegetable Knives to be great all purpose knives. Caution, these knives are so sharp that I have to use care not to choke up on the handle and accidently nick my index finger on the heel of the blade. Just a reminder to practice good knife skills and not be careless with these fine blades. They are clean and practical with their beautiful one piece stainless design and it is fun to see them in the hands of celebrity chefs on the Food Network from time to time. Although Global is in the upper half of the cuttlery price range, I think that they are a good value. We live in our kitchen and love expanding our culinary expertise so it is a pleasure to have quality tools.

i must say this wasn't the knife i should have bought.

but there is one thing i can objectively say about it:

this knife costs more due to the Hollow Ground thingie the blade isn't flat it has small lumps that are meant to prevent the stickyness of vegetables to the knife.

What actually happens is the exact opposite the vegetables stick to the blade like there is a vacume holding them.

other than that the knife looks amazing, weighs exactly like it should feels great in the hand, the edge is sharp.

Home Styles 5023-95 Wood Top Kitchen Cart with Breakfast Bar, Natural Finish

Home Styles 5023-95 Wood Top Kitchen Cart with Breakfast Bar, Natural FinishI purchased one of these a couple of years ago. It has provided much more than I could have asked for the price paid.

My kitchen is rather small with little work space. I needed a place to knead bread and do other things but also needed it to roll out of the way when not needed. This island turned out to be perfect. It does require a bit of assembly. Took me about 90 minutes. The result was a handsome & functional island in unfinished rubberwood. You can finish it with most stains or wood finishes but I would recommend leaving the countertop unfinished. More sanitary & easier to keep clean. (Yes, handled properly, wood is every bit as sanitary as plastic, stone, or metal. Keep ALL liquids off of it!)

It's sturdy enough for hard kitchen use. I have pounded meat on it (on a cutting board) and beat bread dough to death. I have also used it as an impromptu breakfast bar & even rolled it onto the patio to use as a dry bar once. Worked wonderfully. But it really shines as a place to slice. dice, chop & mix. And it's the best bread board I've ever had. (NOTE: DO NOT USE A KNIFE ON THE WOOD!! Put a cutting board down to protect the surface.) It even holds 3 separate, operating machines (bread machine, slow cooker, & my large Kitchen-Aid stand mixer)& still leaves a good working area. The back leaf folds down & reduces the storage space when you need to roll it out of the way.

The only shortcomings (and they are minor) is the depth of the storage. The cabinets are not deep enough to store large pans. You can get two 1 gal. water/milk jugs back to back & that's about it. Also the drawers are too short & too shallow to store long items like ladles, cooking spoons, & butcher knives. A silverware tray won't fit. Also when assembling, stagger the 2 lockable wheels on opposite corners. Otherwise the island will pivot when pushed.

If you need working space for a small kitchen & don't want spend big bucks, this is the island to buy. After seeing mine & how I use it, several friends bought one too.

We recieved this item shortly after we ordered it. Unfortunately two pieces were damaged during shipment and had to contact the company to have replacement pieces sent. They were shipped quickly and without hassle. Assembly went fairly smoothly and we ended up with a pretty decent cart/island with good storage space. It looks good in our kitchen and doesn't look flimsy or cheap. We feel like we got a good deal for the money.

Buy Home Styles 5023-95 Wood Top Kitchen Cart with Breakfast Bar, Natural Finish Now

I am not an impulsive shopper, & saved this in my wish list for about a year while I looked for similar carts that I might like better. This was the winner, & I finally took the plunge & ordered it. I have an old house, & the kitchen has very limited workspace, so this cart was badly needed. It arrived within about a week, no damage, & assembly was fast. Directions were accurate & clear, & there were extras on each piece of hardware. No nasty surprises anywhere. The cart is very attractive, holds my small appliances & gadgets, & with the breakfast bar up provides a large workspace. I am very pleased with this purchase, & there are only 2 reasons I did not give it a 5 star rating. 1) While it is all wood, no particle board or worse, the top is made of pieces of solid wood instead of full length boards. They are put together pretty well, but the joints are visible. And 2) the tool caddy is primarily a knife rack, which I don't need. I may use the router to enlarge the space to hold other kitchen tools, or I may just remove the top. All in all, a really nice product.

This product was just what I needed in my new kitchen. It arrived within a week, and unlike some other reviews, it did have the wood top as advertised vs. a stainless steel. It only took a little over an hour to assemble, which is great compared to other types of do-it-yourself assembly. It gave me the extra storage I was looking for while giving me some seating in a kitchen where a table just won't work. I'm very happy with this purchase.

I bought this cart online from the military exchange (PX) because I did not have to pay for shipping. Other than that,it appears to be the same product and I think it warrants a rating. Here goes:

Packing: The items in the box were WELL protected with a lot of padding and protection. There were a few dings on the box, but the pieces were not damaged at all.

Assembly: I was keen to get this put together so I started alone. After 1.5 hours, it was almost done! My husband joined and it took one more hour. NOTE: we thought we were almost done and found that we had to assemble the drawers (we thought they were pre-assembled). And, we made a few correctable mistakes, but that meant we had to do a few things over (we are not handymen!).

Instructions: Simple, very clear and easy to follow.

Finished product: Very sturdy and looks great!

Other:

1. Be CAREFUL! The counter top wood is sensitive and can be easily dinged!

2. It's not very bigthe middle cabinet has our deep fryer in it. Can hold another item similar to that and maybe a smaller appliance on each shelf (there are two). The two side cabinets (very skinny) hold a blender, extra coffee pot carafe, and maybe other small items.

3. Don't see me using the knife block, but it still put it oncould easily be removed (as the towel holder can be removed).

Summary: The cart looks GREAT. I also plan on using it as a drink cart/bar for an upcoming party! Highly recommended!

Calphalon Katana Stainless-Steel 8-Inch Chef's Knife

Calphalon Katana Stainless-Steel 8-Inch Chef's KnifeSince I was planning to spend a few days in a commercial kitchen, and my 6" Henckels knives are both embarrassingly small for serious work and embarrassingly dull because I'm too lame to sharpen them, I decided to grab the 8" chef's knife (at Bed, Bath & Beyond, with a 20% off coupon.)

It worked extremely well for all the tasks I set it to today, including mincing parsley and chiffonading mint as well as the usual cutting tasks. Despite its shallow curve (I strongly prefer knives whose edges are mostly straight, rather than the curved French style) the blade rocked very well for mincing, and was flat enough to cut completely through the rolled mint leaves in one short stroke. Furthermore, the sharpness impressed the other people who used it, though we shall have to see if it can be REsharpened to the same degree.

The handle design is clearly not for everyone, but I found it very comfortable when I held the knife as many cooks do, with the back end of the blade pinched between thumb and forefinger(s). In particular, most knife handles/bolsters seem to be designed for people who grip knives solely by their handles but the integrated bolster made it feel *right* to grip knife at the blade. The handle *seems* to be just the right weight to balance the blade, but I'll reserve judgment on whether it actually IS that well-balanced until I've spent more than a few hours using it.

I'm impressed enough with the 8" chef that I'm considering getting the block set, which includes the chef and a paring knife (I have no idea if the handle design will work well for that, though) as well as three other not-entirely-useless knives: 5.5" serrated, 6" utility, 5" santoku (which probably would have been great for the chiffonade.) I must admit a 6" chef is probably marginally more useful than a 6" utility, but it's nice to have at least one knife you're willing to hand to your less skilled friends. It also has a diamond hone, which will actually sharpen knives, not just align their edges (though I use a DMT diamond hone for sharpening.)

I find this assortment considerably more useful than many others, which include things like boning knives, carvers and bread knives--all of which are IMO far too specialized to include in a basic knife kit, especially for home cooks. The only shortcoming of the block set is the inclusion of laughably dubious kitchen scissors. I hope that Calphalon will see fit to add to the line at least a 10" chef, and a 9-10" santoku, but most of the funkily ergonomic (or just funky) knife lines I've looked at don't have those, alas.

I have no idea if I'll continue to like this knife as it enters daily use. I hope that Amazon will let me revise my rating later if it turns out to be overly optimistic, but based on this one afternoon's use (and since they force me to rate it) I'll give it five stars.

I am not a professional chef but am a foodie who loves to cook. My wife noticed the way I ogle the fine knives when we are out shopping and so decided to surprise me with this knife for Christmas. I have used it several times in the last few days and my initial impression is "what a great knife"!

Specifically, here is what I like about it:

1. The edge expertly sharpened right out of the package. It cuts cleanly and easily. The core in made of VG-1 steel. VG-1 is high carbon steel which should take a very nice edge when resharpening is needed.

2. The Damascus style stainless steel layers provides a degree of rust and stain protection and has great eye appeal.

3. The handles integrate with the blade without the use of rivets or other fasteners. I have fairly large hands and the shape of the handles are very comfortable for me.

4. The wedge shaped bolster, integral to the blade, is fantastic for people like me who mainly use a pinch grip on the rear of the blade.

5. The knife has a good heft to it without being so heavy that it is tiresome to use.

I am rating this knife 4 stars instead of 5 simply because I have only been using it for a week and would want to use it for a while to confirm it is as good of a knife as I think it is.

i've had my 8" katana for about 4 years now, and i'm just as much in love with it as the day i bought it. like others have mentioned, it's amazingly sharp right out of the package, and i can confirm that a few swipes with a steel bring it right back up to speed years later. beyond keeping it out of the dishwasher and only using wood cutting boards, i certainly don't baby my knives i generally forget to wash it and put it up right away, things dry on it, etc. still, it cleans up and sharpens up with no problem. the unique handle shape (wider at the butt, narrower at the bolster) means it's comfortable for either a standard handle-grip or for the "chefs grip" where the knife is pinched between the thumb and forefinger right at the back of the blade in front of the bolster. unfortunately, this handle shape also means it might not fit quite right in a standard knife block (it does in mine, but it doesn't in a friend's).

my best advice: go to the store and pick one up in your hands! everyone has different fingers, and some knives will be more or less comfortable to you get ones that work for your hand shape and grip style. personally, i hate most wustof & henckels knives for this very reason, since i find their squared-off cross-sections very uncomfortable. this one, though, feels great in the hand to me, and has served me well for quite some time.

I am no chef, just a granny who cooks huge meals regularly for a very large extended family. The knife was a gift over a year ago and I love it. It has become something of a workhorse for me and after all this time and use (almost daily) it has begun to lose just a little of it's edge. I also have very small hands(my eight year old grandsons hands are the same size as mine, which he finds amusing) and I don't have any problems handling the knife. This knife and an ancient, but very reliable faberware paring knife are practically the only knives I use. I cannot say about how a professional chef would view or rate this knife. I have a sneaking suspicion that our chopping and cutting techniques would be VERY different, but for the kind of cooking I do, this knife has been wonderful, and I would not hesitate to recommend it to others like myself.

I bought this to replace a damaged Eberhard Schaaf Goldhamster knife, thinking that the replacement would be "just OK". The Katana is fantastic! Super-sharp out of the box, nicely balanced, with a wide bolster to easy the pressure on my forefinger when I have to apply a lot of pressure. Looks good, if a bit "different" next to my collection of classic Schaaf knives. However, I'm probably going to buy more of these over time, so it'l look less strange.

18 months later, I am still in love with it. The knife feels like a natural extension of my hand, and is super-comfortable. The blade does;t seem to stay sharp for as long as the Schaaf knives, but maybe that's because I use it far more. Five minutes with a Spyderco Sharpmaker and you could shave with it, so no big deal.

If it doesn't hold up for the next 20 years, I'm going to buy another.

Tom Douglas by Pinzon Wenger 12-Inch Oval Sharpening Steel

Tom Douglas by Pinzon Wenger 12-Inch Oval Sharpening SteelCustomer review from the Amazon Vine Program Any good cook will tell you that besides hands, good sharp knives are their most important kitchen tools. Hard chopping surfaces, improper storage and other abuse will dull knives, making them dangerous to use. A good steel is essential to keeping knives operating at peak performance, and this steel is the best I've ever used. (Just for the record, I've owned and regularly used a Chicago Cutlery steel for years, a generic steel that came with a knife set and a cheap one from the hardware store bargain bin. The CC one worked better than the hardware store example, but no better than the generic one. All three of these are round and fit in a knife block and when I use them, I'm never sure I'm getting the right results. The steels themselves are slippery, and using them is more of a ritual than a procedure.

I chose this steel to review because the holidays were approaching and there's never a better time to review a kitchen tool than at a time when heavy use is on the agenda. I was expecting a steel the same size as the one that came with my knife set. Au contraire, mes amis; this thing is HUGE! It arrived in an enormous box and my jaw dropped when I unpacked it--just a little longer and wider and you'd have a nice cricket bat. It came in a rather flimsy protective case that secures with a snap just above the handle. The snap parted company from the rest of the case, but that's not a huge deal; it was one of those cases that you can't figure out if you're supposed to keep it, anyway. Initially, I was disappointed in the handle. It's brown plastic and I thought the heft and quality of the steel itself deserved wood, but now I appreciate the plastic. It's easier to clean and seems to be durable.

As far as the steel itself goes, I tried it first on a dullish chef's knife before dicing a large onion. Three swipes per side made an enormous difference. The oval steel gives a nice broad surface and much more control while sharpening than does the standard round steel. The knife sliced quickly and cleanly without snagging, which was a level of performance I haven't gotten from that particular knife in a long time. Inspired, I immediately went to work on my other knives with equally impressive results. The steel's extra breadth and length is perfect for large butcher's knives as well as for tiny paring knives. This steel has made it possible to resurrect several knives I'd pretty much given up on because they'd gotten dangerously inaccurate. The oval shape is so lovely and satisfying to work with, I've thrown away my other steels. They feel downright cheesy and I'll never go back.

This steel is brilliantly efficient at what it's supposed to do, the only downside is that storage might be an issue in an average kitchen. It won't fit in a knife block or a drawer. I hung it on my pot rack and it's fine there. Mine is more of utilitarian kitchen than a model home type--I don't mind things showing, but House Beautiful types might not be pleased. I highly, highly recommend this steel.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I just received this today. Confession: I tend to be lazy about sharpening my knives. I have purchased knife sharpeners before, but they were, from what I could tell, for lazy people and didn't work very well.

This sharpening instrument takes more work. But we had a roasted chicken breast (bone-in) for dinner tonight. I used this tool to sharpen my favorite knife for this specific task beforehand. Mirabile dictu! The knife did a better job of cutting than is its norm! Thus, it appears that this sharpening tool has an upside to it.

Before any definitive word, of course, I will have to use it over time. But, I can say this--my first exercise with this was very promising. . . .

Got this for my son and he said it wasn't as good as a stone or other sharpeners he has had in the past. He was disappointed with it, especially when it cost so much! It looked like it was nice and heavy but I guess looks are not what I expected.

Admittedly, this is my first kitchen sharpening/honing steel. Always one to keep pocketknives and tools sharp, I've been wanting a kitchen steel for some time. Finally, I decided to buy this on a lightning deal, and I'm glad I did.

Of course, I can't compare it to other kitchen steels, and I don't know if others are for sharpening as opposed to this being a "honing" steel. But after putting up a hook for it in my kitchen, I used the new steel on about a dozen kitchen knives. Though some took more effort than others, it generally didn't take long before I was able to shave the hair off my arm with most of them. I was planning on buying a set of very high quality kitchen knives, but I'm glad that I bought this first. This steel has brought new life to the knives I have had for years, and should help them hold me over at least until next year's round of holiday sales. Much smarter than spending the money on a set of great knives without having a steel to keep them in shape.

I will echo the other reviewers' sentiments on the appearance and feel of this steel. I love its size and heft, though given that the size requires hanging it (which also should serve as a reminder to use it), I would much prefer if the handle looked nicer. I don't mind the dense plastic so much, but maybe make it black or something. Also, if you plan on giving this as a gift, expect to come up with your own packaging. The flimsy plastic sheath that came with this steel was literally split in half at the seams before I even opened the package. The pictures that another reviewer put up actually make the sheath look nicer than it is, if you can believe that. So don't plan on the sheath for extended use or even initial presentation. Amazon has great customer service, and would probably try and help you get one that at least makes delivery without falling apart, but even if you were the sort to bother them over something like this (especially after being forewarned), you would be wasting your time. I would rather give this without the sheath than seem to cheapen the gift of this nice steel by including the flimsy sheath that will certainly fall apart immediately.

Overall though, I am very glad I bought this product.

Kuhn Rikon Corn Zipper

Kuhn Rikon Corn ZipperI saw this corn zipper reviewed in Good Housekeeping, and decided to give it a try. I was a little put off by the price, which seems high for a glorified vegetable peeler, but I process a lot of corn from our garden and wanted a better way to do it. Free shipping from Amazon.com made it worth the gamble.

I received it yesterday and used it to de-kernel a dozen ears of corn from our garden. It worked like a charm! The kernels are neatly cut off into a waiting bowl, without any waste left on the cob. The zipper is rounded so it follows the curve of the cob better than a knife can.

It is extremely sharp on the cutting edge (obviously) so holding the corn safely and cutting away from your hand is very important. But I highly recommend this handy little tool to anyone who cuts corn off the cob for freezing or canning, or even just to serve fresh at dinner.

I bought this product and removed removed the plastic safety cap to check it out. Ended up in the ER. Yes it is sharp needs directions on removing the cap hold it by the ends and remove do not pull up from the middle!!

Now it works great for removing corn. Cuts easily and makes short work of the corn.

I saw this on display at Sur La Table and chuckled, thinking it was another ridiculous uni-tasker, as Alton Brown would call it. They had some corn to play with, so I couldn't resist and tried it out. I was impressed with how smooth and thorough it was at removing the nibs from the cob, but still thought, "Why? I can do that with a knife almost as fast and just as well." So I didn't buy it.

I thought about it later and realized that not everyone has taken knife skills classes, and not everyone WANTS to use a knife as often as they can. I decided to buy one as a gift for a friend who can't really manage corn on the cob, but loves fresh corn. She LOVED it and has thanked me every time we've spoken since I gave it to her. So yes, it's a great little gadget, for anyone who wants or needs such an item.

I think the concept of this is great, but the design of the safety cap covering the blade is BAD and DANGEROUS !!!. I also pulled the guard off the blade using my thumb and forefinger. Didn't yank just pulled and ended up cutting the pad of my forefinger off. A hunk the size of a dime. Had to go to the ER and am still healing after a week. There is no other way to pull it off other than what I did. I'm a trained Chef and I've had courses in knife safety. I've never had such a bad cut with a knife in my life as I have with this device. I think that the safety guard should be bigger/longer and have a better way of removing it so that your fingers never come close to the blades. Beware of this issue....

This removes several rows from the cob so cleanly, they aren't even displaced and you question if you've actually cut the kernels off. It's really sharp and efficient. For large batches, I use a Microplane adjustable slicer, which does a whole ear in 5 slices, but when I'm doing just a couple of ears, I wanted something small and simple. I've tried other zippers but was annoyed that they removed so little at a time. This little tool does the trick. I do have to make two passes since I remove the kernels on the bottom half of the cob in one pass and then turn it around and do the top half, and I do make a bit of a mess with stray kernels getting sprinkled around the work area, but I'm not complaining since it does a good and thorough job pretty fast. I'm sure as I get more proficient it will go even faster (and more neatly :) I can serve corn on the cob for the adults and swipe it off for the little ones, or remove the kernels for a soup easily with this zipper. Of these various tools, I find this one works the best.

J.A. Henckels Twin Pure Swivel Peeler

J.A. Henckels Twin Pure Swivel PeelerThe other reviewer is right about the actual product does not look the same as the picture shown here. But I have to disagree with him/ her when it comes to functionality. If I could, I would give the product zero star. Maybe it's just my luck, but mine has a very dull blade and does not peel at all, unless I use a lot of strength--which can cause the peeler to slip and cut myself. The only reason why I didn't return it is because I was too busy at that time, and now the return period has expired.

Several months ago I bought a J. A. Henckels Twin knife set and ended up returning it. The knives were fine, but the wood storage block that came with the knives had very coarse, uneven slots that, I think, would damage the knives instead of protecting them. With the knife set and the peeler, I can't help wondering what happened to the brand's alleged high quality? I'm really disappointed with J.A. Henckels Twin, and will not buy anything from the brand again.

After wearing out my poor arthritic hands with a $5 peeler from Wal-Mart, I invested in this peeler by J.A. Henckels. As I stood at the sink peeling an apple, I kept saying "amazing" over and over. I have to thank Michael S. Hoover for his review on the OXO peeler. He steered me to the Henckels. This is the best peeler I have ever used and seems sturdy enough to be the last one I'll ever buy.

Once I got the swivel peeler, I realized the picture is for another product.

The swivel peeler match the description but not the web picture.

The design is bad. I tested using potato and carrot, After a few strokes, I had to remove the skins from peeler before continue due to the design. I do not have to do that with my 2 dollar peeler. If the cutting part is longer, then probably it will do better. Furthermore, the design is not easy to clean. I like my 2 dollar peeler design.

Not worth to pay $12 for this.
