Zyliss Fresh Cut Salad Knife, Green

Zyliss Fresh Cut Salad Knife, GreenThis is a good, inexpensive and versatile knife that can be used as a spreader and server. I stumbled upon it when I needed an inexpensive item to meet the free shipping requirement.

It's good for cutting soft & leafy vegetables (lettuce, tomato), things that can be cut with sawing motion. It will not cut hard vegetable (carrot) that requires chopping motion.

It's particularly handy for making sandwiches. I can use it to spread the condiment, then slice the tomato or sweet pepper, and cut the sandwich in half at the end with just one knife. It's also great for cake, breads, brownies, etc.

It washes well in the dishwasher. A great buy overall!

My husband loves to eat iceberg lettuce salads. I got tired of tearing the lettuce up, so I decided to try this. Not only was the knife bigger than expected, but it's very sturdy and sharp. The grip is also very good for the average cook, but not as good as the grip on the Oxo Good Grips Lettuce Knife.

My boyfriend hates the sound of metal on metal, so when I saw that this knife is recommended for cutting cakes and brownies, it had even more appeal. It cuts lettuce like it is supposed to and so far it does seem like my lettuce hasn't been browning as quickly. It's nice using a knife that won't cut my fingers off either!

This is my favorite kitchen tool. It chops salads into even pieces in seconds. Just make a few slices in one direction and then across in the other direction. If you really want small pieces like gourmet chopped salads, just continue.

I was surprised at the number of people who have no idea that the brown edges on cut lettuce are from the metal on the knife they use. (Supposedly, this is rust.) I have used a plastic lettuce knife before and just recently found this one. Great price. Works just like it should. Once you try this, you'll NEVER cut lettuce with anything metal again.

Since becoming vegan it has been hard to find knives to cut my vegetables the way I like them cut, especially tomatoes. Heavy and beautiful.

Ontario Knife 7065 4-Inch Paring Knife

Ontario Knife 7065 4-Inch Paring KnifeThis is many times better better than every other knife in my kitchen drawer, and didn't cost more than any one of them.

I bought the Old Hickory after a minor epiphany. It began when I was trying to sharpen a paring knife that I use all the time in spite of the fact that it's almost dull to the point of uselessness. It's a Chicago Cutlery knife which is made from some mysterious stainless steel, and needless to say I was just ripping minute chunks out of the blade without really improving the edge a bit. It occurred to me all at once that I would never tolerate such poor quality in a camping or hunting knife, but I have never questioned the overt lousiness of my kitchen knives.

Part of the reason for that is that I see no need to spend a ton of cash on something for chopping vegetables and cutting sandwiches. I looked around, and saw that the Ontario Old hickory knives were pretty cheap, and made from 1095 carbon steel. I had used that steel extensively in the field, and knew it would take both a harsh beating and an razor's edge, so I figured I'd give one a try. When I got the Old Hickory, I spent a few minutes on it with an Arkansas stone, and sure enough I was cutting paper with it in no time. For kicks, I tried that with the Chicago cutlery, and it just tore the sheet. You can see the results in my customer image.

Nothing is perfect. Old Hickory knives look awful. They won't be shiny like stainless unless you polish them all the time (and you shouldn't do that). They will rust if you don't wash and dry them after you use them. You will have to touch up the edge once in a while, and the handles are uncomfortable.

On the other hand, the cheapest knife in my drawer is now razor sharp. When it gets a little dull, I'll run it across a stone a few times and be good to go. Now that my expectations have been met by this unassuming paring knife, I think I'll buy a full set of Old Hickories, pitch out my other knives, and call it good.

I got this knife, along with a couple of other Old Hickory knives, about ten years ago and have kept it with me ever since. It is a great knife and it sharpens quickly and holds an edge very well. These were the first knives I owned that had high-carbon steel blades. This kind of steel is harder than stainless steel, will hold a sharp edge longer, and costs much less than most stainless knives of equal quality.

But high-carbon steel has one big drawback-it rusts in water. These knives will also stain and discolor with over time due to use and cumulative exposure to acidic foods (like tomatoes or oranges). The discoloration is harmless, the rust is not (tetanus concerns).

So, Rule #1 when caring for these knives is: DO NOT PUT THEM IN THE DISHWASHER! THEY WILL RUST!

My wife has put these knives into the dishwasher a couple of times by mistake and the blades were orange when I fished them out. Trust me: It is not fun to scrub the blades of sharp knives with steel wool to get the rust off of them.

To properly care for these knives, hand wash them with soap and warm water as soon as you can after slicing and cutting, always being mindful of the very sharp edge. Dry the blade thoroughly and put a very thin film of cooking oil on the blade with a paper towel. This will help to minimize rust and staining. A good way to remember this look at the handle of the knives:

Wooden Handle = Wash by Hand.

If you care for it properly, this knife will reward you handsomely with a lifetime of slicing, chopping and cutting at a minimum of sharpening and out-of-pocket cost. Those are the reasons why I love these knives.

If, however, you just want some knives that you can throw into the dishwasher when they get dirty and have them come out clean, this is NOT the brand of knives for you. Go spend your money on a set of premium-quality stainless steel knives. They will be much more expensive and will not hold an edge as well as these, but they are easier to care for and you won't worry so much about keeping current on your tetanus shots.

I thought I would like this knife but I have found that I find the hanlde too small for my large hand and the blade just too long for my regular uses. I find my old RADA 31/4 inch to work better. I am still using it but have not found the right job for it yet

Ateco Bench Scrapers

Ateco Bench Scraper with Plastic HandleOnce you've had a bench scraper, you'd never cook without one. This one really is worth the money, including shipping. Whether loading cut veggies into a pan, cleaning a cutting board or countertop off, or working with pizza and pastry dough, this tool will be in you hand almost as much as a sharp knife.

I've had cheaper scrapers. The grade and gauge of this steel makes it feel good in your hand, just like a quality knife would.

This bench scraper works fairly well. Think I would have liked it better without the hand hole, it would have had a bigger pick up space.

Buy Ateco Bench Scrapers Now

When I bought the Ateco Bench Scraper with Plastic Handle I already owned and seldom used the OXO Good Grips Multi-Purpose Pastry Scraper/Chopper . I was looking for a bench scraper that would help me smooth icing on the sides of cakes. I felt the OXO was too bulky for that purpose. I love Ateco products. They are aimed at the professional as well as the homemaker. So when I came across the Ateco Bench Scraper I decided to try it. The price was very reasonable. I'm very glad I ordered this product. The plastic handle is about half the width of the OXO. The Ateco handle is textured. This helps make it slip-resistant when wet. The OXO handle feels like hard rubber. They both have stainless steel blades but the Ateco is much more shiny. The OXO blade is dulled like a satin finish. The Ateco blade is 5 7/8" x 3" which makes it a little smaller than the OXO's 6" x 3 1/8" size. The blades on both brands seem very sharp. The OXO has inch markings on the bottom of the blade, like a ruler. The Ateco does not have this feature. I prefer the Ateco. The slimmer handle makes it less bulky to use. I feel the Ateco would be better for icing cakes because I want something that will act more like an extension of my hand. Both are dishwasher safe. I usually cut stick butter still in the wrapper. For me, this is not an easy task with the OXO. The OXO merely pushed the wrapper down pushing the butter apart until it finally cut through the paper. The Ateco sliced right through the wrapper and hard butter. I hardly ever used the OXO but since I received the Ateco, I have been using it every chance I get.

Norpro 370 Bread Slicer and Guide with Crumb Catcher

Norpro 370 Bread Slicer and Guide with Crumb CatcherOnly two things could be adjusted for me to like this slicer better. 1 the grooves could be deeper to keep from slicing into the wood. 2 the guide could be adjustable. Other than that, it is a handy tool to use with baked bread. We use a bread machine that makes a pound and a half loaf. This has really removed the guess work of slicing. The bread should be cooled a little before attempting to slice. We often take bread to functions and using this we now have nice even slices. It is a lot neater using it rather than a plain board, too. All in all, a great kitchen aide.

I purchased this slicing guide to help make even slices for sandwiches. As others before me have noted the sides are too far apart to accomodate a bread knife safely. I've even looked for a longer bread knife but can't seem to find one. Even with taking great care the cheap soft unfinished wood has been gouged. The second time my husband used it the forward motion of the knife that had slipped out of the guide knocked off the side and now the screws for that side won't stay in the wood without changing the way the slots line up. I truly regret this purchase.

Buy Norpro 370 Bread Slicer and Guide with Crumb Catcher Now

I have to start with an explanation that an 8" bread knife has only 7 1/4" of a blade exposed, the other 3/4" is inside the handle and is not useful. With the 6 3/4" spacing between the acrylic guides on this slicer you have only half an inch of the knife left on the other side when the knife is pushed all the way in. The spacing is just too wide for a regular knife and it slips out of the acrylic guide on the opposite side each time I move the knife in order to slice the bread. In order to get back into the slit I have to guide the knife with my other hand which is, of course, rediculous and even dangerous. Because of this, even if I used my left hand to guide the knife into the slit, the slices come out very ugly. Second, the bottom of this slicer is made of soft unfinished (you can't wash it) wood and after 3 slices (that's all I could handle) the wood got deep cuts and splinters. Third, the back panel of this slicer on the Amazon picture has a word "Bread" written in a handsom writing. On my slicer it said in thick block ugly letters: "Our daily bread". That's it, I learned my lesson, back it goes.

I used this slicer twice. The first time, the end kept falling out. I glued that in and the second time I used it, 2 of the tines broke. The loaves from the breadmaker don't fit and there is no adjustment, it just keeps sliding around and you can't get an even slice. If the tines hadn't broke, it would be in the mail back to China or wherever. Cheap shoddy merchandise, stay away from it.

I have been looking for a decent bread slicer for quite some time. This one sold by Amazon seemed to be exactly what I wanted. I ordered it and found it to be as good as stated. I can slice my homemade bread to a nice size --not too thin and not too thick. If desired, I can cut thicker slices by simply removing the end piece of the slicer and moving the loaf forward or thinner slices by pulling the loaf end away from the end piece.

Linden Sweden Cutting Board

Linden Sweden Daloplast Anita Bar Board, Small, PurpleI was a bit disappointed when I received this. It is flimsy and knife marks on it began to show immediately. Then, when shopping at my local grocery store, I spotted the same size board pretty colors as well for $1.50 less and it was much nicer. I am using it, but wouldn't recommend it for the price.

Just what I was looking for. I used to get the Pampered Chef (PC)small cutting boards when my niece was a PC consultant but since she quit I just hadn't gotten around to find a new consultant. I order these (I got three of them) and I like them better than the PPC cutting boards. They don't seem to get cut marks in them as easily. Easy to keep clean. Dishwasher safe. And they don't move around on the countertop (the PC ones did slide around which was akward). I highly recommend these.

Bakers & Chefs White Plastic Knives - 600ctFor whatever reason, purveyors of plasticware insist on providing less knives than forks or spoons. While one can easily find separate packages of spoons, one cannot find them easily for knives. I had a cheap lettuce knife from the grocery store which broke. Actually, I think the "cheap" on cost more than this on amazon. Anyway, using a lettuce knife is way way easier than tearing by hand. As I am sure you know using a plastic knife avoids black/brown edges on your salads.

I recommend this knife because it is sturdy, and functional. If you eat a lot of salad you gotta have it!

Wusthof Knife Edge Guard - Slicer/Utility

Wusthof blade guard 8 carverI really have to wonder about the review that says the Wusthof Blade Guard falls off the knife. Certainly not my experience! It slides easily onto my Dexter-Russell Chinese Cleaver (8" x 3 1/4), stays put, doesn't scratch the knife thanks to the velvet lining, protects the edge from damage, and avoids accidental cuts when rummaging in the drawer where I keep the cleaver. What more could anyone expect from this product?

I purchased this blade guard for my electric fillet knife blades. I had trouble keeping the blades loose, it was hard to take the knife on trips because they would cut through bags and keeping them loose dulled the blades. Now I can transport the blades safely and they stay sharp. The guards are tight and do not slip off, I would recommend these blade guards to anyone.

These are pretty good knives for the price. I have a set of Wustoff Grand Prix at home, these are no where near as nice, but they get the job done. the knives are a little light, so they are not as confidence inspiring as the Wustoff, but this set costs a fraction of the price of a Wustoff chef's knife, so they are a good value. Hamilton Beach 76500 Walk 'N Cut Cordless Can Opener

Hamilton Beach 76500 Walk 'N Cut Cordless Can OpenerWe had fun with the Walk 'N Cut, using it occasionally for about 10 months. When it didn't work one day, I charged it only to find that it still didn't work. Opening it up revealed that the batteries had leaked badly. I called Hamilton Beach and they said it was a discontinued item and could do nothing for me. It's disappointing to have to throw it away after such a short time with no recourse for a warranty replacement.

Yep, it's uncanny, extraordianry and incredible the way this compact can opener trots around a can as it cuts. Just attach to the can, and there we go. The lid is removed cleanly and quickly. Then, the Walk 'n Cut turns off automatically.

It opens any size can from a one serving juice can to a 16 oz. can of ravioli, and it has a removable cutting lever which easily lifts off for cleaning (no more dried tomato sauce stuck to your opener!).

The Walk 'n Cut is cordless and rechargeable. Put it on your counter, as it is an attractive implement, or tuck it away in a drawer.

Wish more of my kitchen necessities did the walking for me!

Mac Knife Professional Paring Knife, 3-1/4-Inch

Mac Knife Professional Paring Knife, 3-1/4-InchI spent a LOT of time researching cutlery. I planned to slowly start a collection of high quality knives (since I am young enough to have only owned Bed Bath and Beyond specials). After a huge amount of research, I was torn between the Mac and Global knives. After handling the global knives locally, I decided I would buy the Mac's and hope for the best. Wow, am I glad I did. These feel very natural in my (probably larger than average) hands. I feel like a professional using these knives, and will take care of them and likely pay to have them professionally sharpened. I feel as if they were a wise investment... just like my cast iron cookware, I don't foresee these going away any time soon. Anxious to add to my collection.

For basic vegetable cutting this knife is tops. We like the feel of the knife

and easy in which it cuts.

Yes, I can definitely recommend this knife .

Felix Platinum 6-Piece Stainless Steel Knife Block Set

Felix Platinum 6-Piece Stainless Steel Knife Block SetCustomer review from the Amazon Vine Program This set of Platinum Felix Knives includes five different knives from an eight inch bread, carving, and slicing knife to a four and a half inch pairing knife. These knives are extremely sharp and I had to take extra care removing them from the packaging. The stainless steel and glass case that houses the knives looks like a piece of art and is a much more hygienic way to keep your knives. This set is amazing and it includes every knife that you will need to prepare your meals. This will make an excellent gift for an aspiring chef or a nice classy housewarming gift.

The stainless steel rack can be easily disassembled so you can easily clean the case. The Molybdenum Vanadium platinum that is used to create these knives gives them a sharp razor like edge that gives them their pristine shine and sharpness.

The Felix knife set is an aesthetically beautiful set but it is not for the gracefully challenged cook and it would be an immediate upgrade from the same knives that we are accustomed to.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Overall, I'm very happy that I was able to audition these knifes and I do recommend them for consideration. Without a lot of experience with various knives, I'm not sure if they are a good value at the current asking price of $300 but they seem reasonable based on the following. I have a set of Anolon Advanced knifes that cost about $150 and came with more knifes (some of which I'll likely never use, though), and these knifes are clearly at least one step up in quality. They are sharper, feel more balanced, and have a nicer fit and finish on the blades. After getting these, I bought two Shun Premier knifes. An equivalent set of those might cost around $500-$600, and I think that the Shuns are better than these Felix knifes in the same categories that the Felix are better than the Anolons. So, in my limited experience and personal opinions, this set is middle ground in quality, function, aesthetics, and price.

I've listed below the aspects that I like and those that I would change. In general, I think that the whole set is high quality, the knifes are very nice, but the block, while sturdy and aesthetically pleasing, isn't a great functional design.

Pros:

Knifes arrived very sharp. This should be expected, but it's a pro to me because my Anolon knife set had a number of dull knifes when it arrived. Cutting fruits, vegetables, and meat has been easy with these knifes.

The fit and finish of the knifes. From what I can tell from researching, the steel is the same as that used in my Anolon knifes, but the overall quality of these knifes is at least one step up. The have a consistent surface finish and exhibit an attention to detail.

The handles. I was leary of plastic handles, as I thought that they would feel cheap and uncomfortables. To my surprise, I really like them! One of the nicest things to me is that they do not get slippery when I'm hand washing them with soap and water.

The aesthetics and build quality of the knife block. Not the most functional (see below), but it does showcase the knifes very well.

Cons:

The functional aspect of the knife block. To its credit, the base is heavy and the block will need to be angled fairly far before it will tip over. There are two things that I don't like about it, though. First, while it fits under my cabinets just fine, I can't pull any of the knifes out without pulling the block out or angling it. Sometimes I want to grab a knife when my hands are already wet or messy from handling food, so that isn't nearly as convenient as a knife block that has the handles angled out for grabbing. Second, the knifes can rattle inside the glass if the set is vibrated. For example, if you have them on a table and bump the end of the table like I did at first, or possibly if you have them on your counter and run an appliance like a food processor.

As a note: the knife block that I received is not quite the same as the one pictured (at least at the time of my review), but instead is identical to the block that comes with this Mercer knife set. They are very similar, so it's a note and not a criticism. However, I think that you might be viewing this set based on the aesthetics of the block, so it might be important. The differences are that the included block contains a metal piece with separators that help with placing the knifes, and two circular ends that screw onto the top of the metal posts to secure that metal piece in place. That separator isn't installed when the block arrives, so you can use it or not according to your preference. Without that piece, the block looks nearly identical to that pictured here with the minor exception of two circular end caps (which are the same metal) on the top of the posts. You can also remove those end caps, but then you'll expose the threaded holes that they screw into.

There is nothing about this set that I think is low quality. The knife block, which I thought looked great in the photo, isn't my preference after being able to try it in person but it is very well made. The knifes themselves should last for many years. Like I mentioned above, I'm happy overall with this set and really like the knifes.

UPDATE March 4, 2012: I like these so much that I bought a set (minus the glass block) for my mom. She is also quite happy with them and specifically pointed out that she likes the handles on these.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program The first thing you notice about this knife set is the holder. If you are like me and pop 3 knives out of a wood block before finding the right one (especially if someone else does the dishes), then you will appreciate the transparency that lets you grab the right knife every time. At first I was concerned that any gunk I got down there would be visible, then I realized it could be cleaned, and that I had no idea if my old wood knife block was filled with gunk or not. Gross.

The knives themselves are very well-balanced. They are solidly constructed with metal all the way to the back of the handle. There is nothing that's going to come loose and start wiggling after a few years of use. The handles are comfortable, and it never felt like my fingers were in the way.

The knives are also amazingly sharp. Out of curiosity, I tried them on a tomato that had gone bad and was pretty soft, which normally results in a pile of pulp. With these knives I got as clean of slices as from a firm tomato. Likewise, slicing things like pumpkin bread results in a lot fewer crumbs. They are just a pleasure to use.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I tend to cook a lot, and found several years ago that the one thing that makes it all go faster is a good set of sharp knives. So, I was curious about this set, as I was looking to downsize from the HUGE knife block with too many knives that took up far too much room on my counter.

I was impressed by the knives right away they are put together very well no gaps between the blade and the handle, fairly comfortable handles, and VERY sharp blades. It had been a while since I had knives that sharp. Slicing tomatoes was beautiful, and cutting through the other veggies was a snap. The bread knife easily cut through a very crusty loaf of Irish Soda Bread without ripping it to shreds.

The block takes up VERY little space on my counter, and comes apart for easy cleaning. The knives slide in and out quite easily, and each has its own little section, delineated by mini bars between the plastic sides.

The only downside (and it's not the fault of the knives, which is why I didn't downgrade my rating) I bent the tip of one of the knives. It was sliding off my counter, and rather than reach for it and slice my hand open, I let it fall. It went point down into my wood flooring, and bent the tip to about a 45 degree angle. *sigh*

In short, as long as you're not as clumsy as I am, I highly recommend this set. It would be a great addition to almost any kitchen decor, would be excellent for those just starting out and in need of a good basic set, and as a fairly proficient home cook I love them!

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin Cuisine 8-Inch Bread Knife

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin Cuisine 8-Inch Bread KnifeI've owned Henckels knives for years, and with the exception of the lower end product line, have always been pleased with the quality. Over the past few years I've had troubles with carpel-tunnel syndrome, so shopped for knives that would be easier on my wrists--and this one is exactly as I'd hoped! Ergonomically, it's perfect. Feels good in the hand, wrist is straight, no stress. Another benefit is the weight & balance of the Twin Cuisine line; it's rather heavy, but the balance is perfect. Overall, an excellent quality tool! I liked it so much I ordered several others and have actually replaced most of my older knives with the Twin Cuisine product.

One caveat: this sucker is SHARP! My husband (no dummy with a knife) sliced his finger open first time he used it.

This is hands down the best bread knife I've ever used. It glides right through crusty loaves like they are softened butter. It's amazing!

I first bought the 7 inch Santoku knife in the Twin Cuisine line which is so awesome, so I had to buy another Twin Cuisine. The bread knife is also fabulous. The fit in my hand is the main reason I love this knife so much. Of course, the way it slices is the typical Henckels, fabulous! It has a very cool contemporary look to it also.

We have used Henckels' knives forr several years and were adding to the collection. This one, like the others is a great choice. It fits nicely in the hand and does what it is meant to do. I would add a sixth star if it weren't for the price. Paying $100 for a knife is something I will never get used to.

Kuhn Rikon Original Small Santoku Knife Colori 5-Inch Blade

Kuhn Rikon Original Small Santoku Knife Colori 5-Inch Blade, PurpleI would have given this knife five stars if it wasn't made in china. However with that being said, this is a very sharp piece of cutlery in a smaller size Santoku package which comes in handy for smaller cutting jobs. Slicing whole green chile pods, tomatoes, limes, etc. is a breeze. Blade protecting sheath is a big plus.

These are great knives! I would've given a perfect score except I thought the handles were of a much cheaper quality of plastic than ones I have purchased in the past....but so far has shown to be just as effective.

If you're looking for an affordable knife with an amazingly sharp blade and comfortable grip, this is it ! I can slice summer sausage thinner than 1/8 of an inch thick, and slicing fruit thin for tarts or just for a different mouth feel when raw is easy ! The blade guard is also greatand having different colors makes them stick out in the drawer. I'm gradually changing all of my knives to Kuhn Rikon. I can't afford Wustoff or some of the other mega-buck knives, but with these I don't feel I need them :)
