I love the looks of these knives, I love the Plexiglas holder and i love the way the knives cut. They are sharp and leave a very nice edge. And i love the black blades. They are kind of reflective and very cool looking. I am very pleased with my purchase.These knives look great and are very sharp. We love the handles, they are not cheap hard plastic like we thought they would be. They are a great buy for the moneyI owned a Kyocera 4" ceramic knife for a few years. I paid over $110 for the Kyocera and it is a white color. I then saw this and bought one set for almost 6 months. This knife set is better looking than the white blade knives. I found this to be just as good or maybe even better made than the very expensive Kyocera. It stay sharp and I never have to sharpen. It is durable enough if you don't use it to cut bone or ply open a can. I dropped it a few times to the floor. They survived the drops. When I peel apple with it, the apple do not rust like using a metal knife. I still keep a few steel knives for cutting bone and chopping. Otherwise, this set is the best and very durable as advertised. Don't buy the Yoshi knife, the white blade chips really easy. Black blade tend to be harder as well as more flexible. After struggling with wooden silver chests that slam shut, are heavy, boxy and difficult to store, I switched to the drawer liner type. It works as well as a wooden silver chest in warding off tarnish, and is so much easier to see your flatwear at a glance. Also, there's a bit of room to include other small pieces of silver tucked between some empty space.I would buy this product again without hesitation.... just be certain the drawer liner will fit easily into the drawer you want to use for this purposes.It's a great product.Fits our draw perfectly. This flatware holder is easy to use. I bought for my kitchen drawer (make sure you measure) so I could use my silver every day. Works perfectly. I bartended for 15 years, so maybe i should have known nice wine keys are not $10, nor are good cigar cutters. It looks great, but the key's angle in use is poor and the screw does not pivot far enough to get the cork out (tried 3 different bottles. Cigar cutter is poor. More crush than cut; the foil knife would work better to cut cigars. If you want something for the guy that shows up to a party uninvited with wine and a cigar it will work. if you want to use it yourself 3-4 times a year maybe? it simple does not function well as a tool period. it's $10 but i love the look and IF IT DID WORK WELL i could have payed $60 and would have thought it a deal.I love the concept, one tool to open wine and cut cigars! I can usually never find a corkscrew or a cutter when i need one so having a spare of each seemed like a win win. My friends loved it and I was a satisfied customer for several months. People who criticise this product simply don't know how to use them. My own experience as an amateur, who wants really sharp kitchen knives, is as follows:For sharpening kitchen knives to that really razor sharp edge, you must use sharpening stones (I recommend Japanese waterstones, Shapton, Ice Bear or King brand all readily available) starting from medium grit and progressing to fine then extra fine grit. The final grit should be at least 6000 grit. Personally, I use a Shapton 12000 grit final stone, and finish off with gentle stropping on a leather strop, with Cr0 powder on it. This gives a true razor edge. We are talking about an edge of 0.5 micron width. This is the same as the best quality razor blade.
When sharpening blades to this fine an edge, it is critical that the blade MUST be kept exactly at a constant angle to the stone (usually about 15 to 20 degrees). The difficult part for most of us is to hold that constant angle just using your un aided fingers. Unless you are a real expert, you will be like me unable to maintain that exact angle constantly when sharpening freehand. Because human hands and fingers are too flexible!
The answer is these simple clip-on guides. They slide onto the back of the knife and hey presto there is your fixed angle. You can slide the guide onto the straight part of the knife (nearer to the handle) to sharpen it, then move the guide onto the curved part near the point) to sharpen that part of the knife. This means that you are sharpening the knife in sections.
The current guides (made in China) have plastic sleeves which prevent scratching the knife, older guides with no plastic can easily be made non scratch by installing your own sleeve from a cut down plastic milk bottle, folded in half and pushed into the guide.
I have used these guides on my Global knives and other Japanese kitchen knives and have found that the knives are much much sharper than new.
Incidentally, these guides, when used as directed, will give a blade edge angle of about 10 degrees. This different from what most sharpening advice (including Global's own)which is normally about 15 to 20 degrees. No matter the more acute angle gives a much sharper edge.
Also I recommend using a ceramic "steel" in particular the Kyocera CSW-18 which has a super fine grit and is far superior to diamond "steels"

A "must buy" book is Chad Ward's "An edge in the Kitchen". This book has just been released. Available from Amazon and highly reviewed. Chad tells you all you ever need to know about selecting, using, and sharpening kitchen knives.I've owned a Global chef's knife for almost 2 years. It continues to perform very well although it has lost its sharpness. Because of its impressive performance, I've given away my other knives and use the Global almost exclusively. Because the knife was expensive, I wanted to sharpen it properly and did a lot of research before buying the Minosharp sharpening guides. Based on experience, sharpening with a stone is still superior to fancy and costly ready-made sharpeners like the Minosharp plus. I can buy a new Global for the price of that sharpener. Although I know how to use a stone and had success with sharpening smaller knives, my hands are too small to maintain the right angle for the 10-inch Global. I used the Minosharp guides soon after receiving them in the mail and they worked like a charm! Great value for less than 15 bucks. My Global is now as sharp as the day I took it out of the box. Other reviewers pointed out that the guides can scratch the knife. I avoided scratches by covering my knife with 2 layers of transparent 3M shipping tape that was wide enough to cover the path of the sharpening guide (one layer could have done it but I wanted to be sure). I had no problem sliding a guide down the covered back of the knife. For those new to sharpening with a stone, I highly recommend that you watch Mino Tshuchida's knife sharpening tutorial on youtube. He works for Global and his video is the official tutorial from the company. The video can be a bit difficult to understand because of Mr Tshuchida's thick accent but after you watch it a few times you will learn a lot of tips. Happy slicing!

I purchased this item with a $350.00+ knife. The guide rail leaves scuff marks on the top part of the knife, but it creates a perfect edge that I would have had problems making. I use my knife 10 hours a day cause I am a sushi chef so it is important to me to keep my knife sharp. I don't know why people are giving this item a bad review. Personally I don't think they know how hard it is to sharpen a knife with a whet stone. Sure, they keep the knife at the right angle, but they only work well on the straight part of the blade. Where the curve is and where the blade gets more narrow the guide makes the angle steeper, which isn't good for the edge. Today I bought one with plastic insert and I can confirm it scratched my knife at the second and further insertion attempts. I could almost hear the sound :).No matter how long I have washed it under running water.
Also when I set it aligned to the blade edge as instructed in the manual (not aligned to the knife end), I find it impossible for it not to move while sharpening...

I have a set of Resplendence and found this set on Amazon. I was so excited to add to my existing set at such a reasonable price; especially since it's a discontinued pattern from Wallace. Too good to be true :( The box,paperwork,printing looked EXACTLY like the real deal. The flatware was junk! :( It was stamped 18/10 but having real Wallace Resplendence, I could easily feel the weight difference.."extremely light". In addition, the pattern was a poor imitation with shallow detail and the thickness of the pieces were half the proper depth. Wallace Resplendence 18/10 was even stamped on the TOP side of a spoon instead of the underside. What a disappointment. Not much to be said, other than this knife comes ground to the correct angle and very sharp. It also holds its edge for quite a while. It isn't the heaviest chef knife around, but if you are accustomed to the cheapo gift set knives, your hand and wrists will need to get adjusted to the heftiness of a professional instrument; expect a slight reduction in speed until your muscles catch up. But when they do, you'll wonder why you didn't get a knife like this before, it makes cutting so much easier. Enduring Bamboo 3 Piece Cutting Board Set - Large Small and in Between You'll Have the 3 Best Woode
I was excited when I found the boards at a reasonable price. They came right away with easy to follow care instructions. I'd been using a plastic cutting board and constantly had to sharpen my knives...and frankly, my plastic board was looking a bit funky. I had planned to use one board for veggies, one for meat and the smallest for cheese. However, that isn't the way the plan turned out. Make sure you open your package in private unless you really want to share, the boards are beautiful and anyone watching will want one. My daughter just came back to Indiana to live (from California) and left her trusty old wooden cutting board behind in the move. When she saw the bamboo, she was ecstatic. We're primarily vegetarian, so I figured I wouldn't miss one of the boards and gave her the medium sized one. We cooked together on the Fourth and didn't have to sharpen the knives once. I also understand the bamboo has antibacterial properties, so I don't have to worry as much about the health of the family, particularly since we eat most of our vegetables raw.This is a great quality product a great value for the price paid. The three different sizes will be useful depending on what my husband and I are cooking. The instructions included with the product were very helpful, especially since I didn't know you can't use food oil (olive or vegetable) on the boards to protect them. There were great instructions about oiling the boards, disinfecting the boards, and other helpful tips. I would recommend this product to others who are looking for a set of cutting boards.I didn't expect to be so thrilled to get a set of cutting boards, but these are really nice! They're super thick and of excellent quality. They don't wobble on my counter and are sturdy, and the weight of them feels good. This is one of the first global knives I bought. I loved it the first time I held it in my hands. What impressed me most was the perfect balance, the lightweight, and the sharpness. However, what may be perfect for me may not be perfect for you. I'd recommend anyone who is shopping for cutlery to go to a store and try how the knife feels in your hands before buying. And if you can borrow from a friend to try, that's even better.Having used this knife for several years now, my initial impressions haven't changed. This is still my favorite knife for most tasks. I maintain it regularly with a steel and it is as sharp as it ever was. I have found though that for certain tasks like cutting slits into an onion for dicing or cutting root vegetables, I do prefer a heavier knife (that's why I bought another forged global knife), but that is just personal preference. At heart I am a traditionalist and the appearance of the Global range had put me off them. Fortunately I recently read Anthony Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential and noted his ringing endorsement of the Global range. I decided to buy the 8-inch chef's knife to see how I got on with it. I have never looked back!
Despite its rather unconventional look, the knife has excellent ergonomic design. It is well balanced, readily gripped when wet and astoundingly sharp. TMOT, you are unlikely ever to meet a sharper knife. Hold a sheet of paper from the top with one hand out in front of you and then cut downwards with the other this knife readily cuts the paper without it being tensioned. That is what we mean by a sharp knife.
As noted in the Amazon description, the knife's handle is fairly small. My hand is a medium male hand about 3.25 inches or 8.5 cm across its back. The knife is an excellent fit for my hand and could probably accommodate a hand upto 4 inches or 10 cm across the back. However, I have seen some chefs with meaty hands that might find this knife a less than perfect fit. The knife is fairly light it weighs 5.5 ounces or 160 grammes.
In all I am well satisfied with this purchase and shall go on to replace all my Sabatiers with the Global equivalents. Oh yes and if you haven't yet read Anthony Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential, buy that too but be careful not to cut yourself when you start laughing thinking about some of the things he has to say about professional cooks...I've been a German knife snob for years. But this 8-inch chef's knife by Japan's Global is the finest blade I've ever owned. Period.
Maybe it's not as easy to sharpen as a Wustof or a Henckel, but then again, it holds its edge ten times longer.
I've spent ten years and hundreds (and hundreds and hundreds!) of dollars collecting German steel. Global is so good that it has me thinking of starting all over again.

This knife amazed me when I took it out of the box. I lightly dragged my thumb across the edge and felt some of my skin shave off, and looked closely at the edge to see flakes of my skin on either side of the blade. I tested it out on a tomato eagerly and it fell through it like falling through air. You cannot feel any friction whatsoever as the knife goes through the food. This knife is well worth the money, and really for a knife of such quality, its not that expensive.It is lightweight and all one full piece of steel, which means all food can be washed from it without sticking in any cracks or seams, as well as rigid durability. The steel its made of, apparently "Cromova 15", shines in my eyes like the first time I got it every time it is washed, and repels water, so the juices from various foods drip away to help prevent slices of food sticking to the side of the blade.
I gave this knife four stars, because unfortunately, the edge will start to deteriorate after about 3-400 strokes to the board. And it is exceptionally difficult to sharpen due to the strange edge these knives have had put on them at the factory, BUT if you regularly stroke it across a mediocre steel once or twice on each side after a few uses the edge will remain factory sharp for quite a long time. This knife will make all your foodie friends jealous. I left mine at work for about 4 days whilst I was gone, and the head chef (who readily agrees it is the sharpest knife in the kitchen) used it heavily, disregarding his wuhstof collection. I came back and he had not honed the edge, so it had deteriorated well beyond repair to its original condition. Make sure you keep it sharp and treat it like family, and this knife will treat you better than any knife I have used, and I own Shun, Whustof, Henckels 5-star, Sabatier, and other various brands. I am sold on global.

So... you want to buy a nice knife for the kitchen, but aren't quite sure what's best? The truth is, there is no "best" knife as everyone hopes for. The idea is finding a knife that feels right in your hand, is sharp, stays sharp, and is easy to re-sharpen and hone.If you're looking for a heavy knife that uses its own weight to crush through everything in its path, keep looking. Global knives are extremely light. That's the number one complaint I hear from my coworkers as to what they don't like about my knife. But the blade of this knife is very thin and holds an edge better than any other knife I've seen. So when I'm cutting an entire five gallon bucket of carrots for crudités, the knife glides right through the last carrot as smoothly and evenly as it did the first carrot. I rarely ever sharpen this knife, and I use my honing steel once a day at the beginning of my 10-12 hour shift. And despite this, everyone who touches my knife is always amazed by how sharp the blade is. For me, low maintenance is a blessing. Who doesn't love that?
The second complaint I hear a lot is the grip. Many firmly believe that the stylish metal grip becomes slippery when wet or combined with a little grease or fat from the food that is being cut. Sure, that's true. But first off, what knife handle doesn't get slippery when fat or grease is involved. That's what fat and grease does. It makes things slippery. Second, your knife hand should be holding the knife, not the food. If you put the knife down to handle the food, you should be washing your hands. Now dry them off and there's no worries, right? That complaint never made any sense to me.
My best recommendation to anyone looking for a good knife is that you first go somewhere that allows you to take a few different knives for a "test drive". Just chop a few things and see how it feels in your hand. If you live in a place where that is out of the question, then just keep in mind what qualities best fit your needs, and I wish you the best of luck with your selection. If this is the knife you choose, I know you won't be disappointed.
Mercer Cutlery Genesis 6-Piece Forged Knife Block Set, Steel/Black
I had the chance to try cutting with the Mercer's chef knife at a local kitchen store. Compared to the Wüstof and Henckels knives, these Mercer knives are heftier with a bulkier hand grip. At first I did not like the bulkiness of the grip however I did like the weight difference. I would have purchased the knives locally, but the shop was unable to order this knife block set.Now that I have been using these knives quiet a bit over the past week, it was definitely worth the purchase. I don't even notice the bulkier hand grip now (and it is only bulky by comparison to Wüstof and Henckels). It is my understanding that these knives are commonly used by culinary students and I can understand why. This is a professional product for nearly half the price of other knives in this competition range. In order to keep the blades sharp, I also purchased the Mercer Genesis Collection 10-Inch Honing Steel.
One thing to be aware of with the glass knife block is that the knives are removed by pulling straight up. Of course this is obvious, but unlike other angled knife block sets, cabinet clearance may be an issue for some kitchens. I had not thought of this when originally ordering and at first was disappointed when I thought it would not be possible to store these knives on the counter under cabinetry. However, this is a very sturdy steel and glass knife block. I soon realized the block does not slide when tipped. So whenever I need to remove or return a knife to the block I simply lean it forward without trouble.
Regarding another reviewer's issue with the staining of the bread knife: I have cut bread numerous times so far and have had no issue with staining. I have also used it to cut tomatoes. As for the other knives, I have cut chicken, strawberries, peppers, carrots, garlic, etc. with no issue. I do hand wash the knives directly after use as recommended by the manufacturer.
Overall, I am very pleased with this set.These knives are of very good weight and very sharp. Definately not a cheap feel! The glass block is awsome and looks great on the kitchen counter. It is easy to assemble, and easy to clean.

If you've never indulged in a good cutlery set before, prepare yourself. The difference that having a good knife can make is really amazing. That's not to say that these are the best knives that money can buy. Far from it, in fact. But they most definitely are the best knives you can buy for $160.The set includes 5 knives: a general utility knife, a paring knife, a boning knife, a bread knife, and a classic chef's knife. they're all very sturdy and well balanced. The handle is a very comfortable rubberized material that wraps around the entire handle. I usually prefer a classic handle on my knives: wood, triple-riveted, full-tang. These handles are rubber, with no rivets (though a nice little emblem on one side of the handle towards the back), and no real way to tell if they're full tang or not since you can't see how far back the metal goes.
However, they most definitely do feel sturdy and balanced, which is what really matters in the end. All of the knives have a very nice weight to them, and the glass 'block' is gorgeous to look at.
As other reviewers have mentioned, you do have to take into consideration that the knives come out straight up, so putting this under a cabinet will not work. You'll either need plenty of room above it to pull out the blades, or just not use the display stand and opt for either a classic wooden block, or a magnetic strip to hold the blades.

I buy A LOT on Amazon, and have never bothered to write a review. I just can't find the time with two small children. I was prompted however to write a review on this Mercer Knife set. I wanted to send my father a nice knife set for the holidays. I was hesitant to buy an item like this online because I could not physically check the quality. I read a number of reviews for different sets and decided on this as he has a rather small space to work with in the kitchen, and did not want a big hulking block full of unnecessary knifes he would barely use.I took a chance and he called after it arrived to thank me and told me they were excellent quality, that he loved the space saving storage vessel. I was relieved he was very happy with his gift. It wasn't until I came to visit him this week that I remembered I gifted them. I went to make dinner and used the knifes. I absolutely love these knifes. I am so impressed I am picking a set up for myself. I paid around $150 for them for my Dad, and they are at $129 right nowand with Prime that is a steal. I am not a chef, but do enjoy my time in the kitchen. I have a couple of really nice preparation knifes but these will round out my set.
On a side note while here I was able to easily unscrew the vessel using my fingers to slide the glass out and clean it. It slides right back in and you just screw it back tight with the flat topped stainless screws atop each column. They are large enough for anyone with hand dexterity issues to grab hold of and unscrew.

This is a wonderful product. The stand is very substantial, the finish is not overly shiny and looks even better than the picture. The knives weigh more than others, but you get used to it without any problem and its easy to get a good grip. The knives have a nice metal logo (?) on one side that helps me line them up easily. The rocker knife works very well. I have use of my hands but I have arthritis, in the thumbs. It has made things much easier. No longer have to ask others to cut my food. Whoopee! Thanks AMAZON. These are cheap made in china that are chrome plated tin instead of what was advertized as stainless steel.where the plateing has chiped off is a ugly rust spot.In no way are they Fiesta quality and not worth the exorbinant price.After I read other reviews I bought these first ones on a trial to see what they looked like and felt since I have arthritis in my hands.They are great so I ordered 6 more settings to have 8. Only wish they had additional serving utensils in the one color available

Nambé Glacier 5-Piece Place Setting, Service for 1
When I decided it was time to finally replace my aging flatware (22+ years of use and they were hand-me-downs when I got them) I spent a lot of time looking at and researching various patterns. I narrowed down my search to the Nambe Glacier and two Yamazaki patterns. All had the simple, clean lines I was looking for and excellent build quality. To compare them I ordered a single setting of each and compared them side-by-side to come up with a winner.When the Glacier arrived I was immediately impressed with quality and attention to detail. But really the first thing that grabs you is the size and weight of this pattern. The weight is the heaviest I have run across. This size of all of the pieces is much larger than any other that I have seen. The dinner knife and soup spoon are approaching serving fork/spoon size. To put it in perspective, the salad fork from the Nambe set was almost identical in size to the dinner fork in my current flatware. Another thing I noticed is a lot of the weight is in the handles. Although everything felt pretty well balanced I did notice there was tendency for the utensils to want to fall of the edge the plate/bowl when carrying them to the kitchen from the table because of the long, heavy handles.
The knives in this set are beautiful to behold. A unique design that doesn't look like any others that I have seen. Unfortunately, function lags behind form in this case. Because the knives are a single piece design, not the hollow handle higher carbon stainless blade design you usually see in flatware in this price range, they are extremely heavy. But the real downfall is the blade design with is very thick. Although there is an edge ground on and it has tiny serrations, the knives just don't do a very good job cutting. As a test, I put some baby carrots on a plate and took turns slicing them while holding them with a fork. The two non-serrated but thin bladed knives had no problem slicing the carrots. The Glacier knife on the other hand didn't fair so well. Because of the thickness of the blade the knife had a difficult time with the carrots. Using a sawing action did not help. The only thing I could do was to keep increasing the pressure until finally the blade would chop through the carrot which would instantly go flying off the plate onto the floor.
While beautiful to look at and build like a battle tank the Nambe Glacier had too many drawbacks for me to pick it as my everyday flatware. I could have learned to live with the size and weight of the set although I would have preferred they scaled it down about 10%. The real deal breaker though was the knife. While I don't expect it to cut like fine cutlery or a steak knife I do expect it to be able to do rudimentary tasks and it failed miserably at those. As a special occasion set it would fine but it lost out for my everyday set.I have this flatware that I purchased several years ago. I decided to add to my service. Nambe has changed the design and added a serrated edge to the knife. In my opinion, it defeats the purpose of the sleekness of the design. I'm pretty sure that the new knife edges will scratch the existing knives unless I some how keep them from rubbing each other as I open and close the drawer.

Natural Arkansas Hone, Ultra Fine
This is an excellent polishing stone that will give you a factory sharp edge on any almost any knife that isn't beat up or dented badly. That is if you use the right shaping stones before it correctly. Lansky is the best sharpener company for the money you will ever find.So if you want to know about the item itself, it gets FIVE STARS. The problem with this listing is this is not actually an "Arkansas" stone as stated. It will still work with the arkansas stone kits because it is the last step polishing stone you would use. I bought it along with the arkansas three stone kit after I had used my friends five standard stone kit and the major banefit to the arkansas stones is they are supposed to last longer. They also take off a little less metal to a comparable grit regular stone and thus can produce a somewhat more even edge, again this particular 1000 grit stone is so good it doesn't effect the finished product when used in conjuction with the arkansas kit like I am doing. So that's why I'm not trying to return this to the seller. However I should tell you that the regular stones will still do wonders for a non abused blade edge and I bought the arkansas kit because I am a bit obsessive about my knives and if I can make a better edge I wil usually try. If you do beat your knife up a bit the regular five stone pro-kit has more corse grind stones that will be much quicker at reshaping your blade and can actually eliminate some small dings and burrs from it completely.
So if you are not experienced at sharpening knives and I mean Really sharp, the standard stones will do you no wrong.
This is a standard stone that can give you a razor edge if used right.

The design on this serving set is very nice. I would recommend this design for anyone having a western wedding. The serving set goes great with the candlesticks and toasting glasses which I also purchased for my daughter's wedding. The bride-to-be is very pleased with the items by Hewitt. We would recommend them to all who wants this type of design.When I received these the box was somewhat smashed. But the set looked ok, the blades a bit flimsy. These knives are fantastic! Big, beefy blades and handles make them easy to hold and use. You can really bear down without having the blade fold up or the handle break--not that you have to. The blades are well-designed and sharpened and they hold their edge well over time. If you want to cut meat, these are the only knives to use.
