WMF 8 Slot Knife Block, White
My draw to this knife block was the size and looks. I get by with a handful of quality of knives so I don't like the giant 12+ slot wood blocks. I liked the idea of a plastic block that is hollow on the inside so that it is easy to clean. My only complaint is the weight and stability of the unit. If you accidentally knock the block on its side it could tip over. It'd be cool if they added small suction cups on the feet of the block like some small appliances have.Shun Ken Onion 2-Piece Carving Set
I recieved this carving set for my birthday and was VERY pleased with how well it cuts. No real effort is necessary. The quality is amazing. The look is very nice. Would recommend to anyone who wants a carving set.I am a professional Chef with 36 years experience and have always loved my Henckels. My knives are my tools.I bought this set as a wedding gift for my nephew. When I unboxed the knife (to put a penny in the box for good luck) I took the knife out of the box and was very impressed with the balance, grip and edge. It is not stamped. It is not part of a starter set. It is not for peeling carrots.
I was so impressed, that I promptly ordered one for myself and retired my 10 year old Henckels carver. I did a prime rib at home last week and could not believe how well this knife carved. I was able to do English cuts like I was cutting butter.
I did a side by side with my Henckels that was just back from being professionally sharpened. The Henckels was Triple A and the Shun was MAJOR LEAGUE. If you have the nerve to step up with the big boys, this is a real knife. It will last a lifetime. Really.
I'm sold. My next knife will be another Shun.

My old steak knives were flimsy and worn so when I shopped for new ones I wanted knives that were solidly made by a top-rated company like Henckels. The price was right so I bought two sets. I think I should have bought 3 sets. They are always sharp and my guests remark on the quality of the knives at meals. I even use them sometimes when I am doing prep work. These would be a great gift item too.This is a nice set of steak knives. I am not an advocate for serrated knives, but these knives are great. Henkels in my opinion is loosing their place in the knife business while progressively lowering their quality with inferior lines. I would prefer to have high carbon. The design incorporates Micro-serrations that catch pull and tear at what ever you are trying to cut. I have owned 4 sets for a couple of years. They sat in the drawer while we continued to use the 20 year old knives they were supposed to replace. This weekend I pulled them out and took then down to the shop where I ground off the serrations and sharpened the newly formed edge. The knives are now great!The knives are easy to hold. Handles are thick. The serated portion of the blade is small and at the tip. This takes some getting used to. Once accomplished, the knives are great. I ordered a second set.Want J.A. I was on the verge of buying Wusthof kitchen scissors when I gave these a try. Oxo's Good Grips kitchen scissors are considerably better and better than my Zyliss shears and Italian Hoffritz antique kitchen scissors and I'll tell you exactly why:1) Longer blades than the Wusthof means more cut per snip. Part of the length issue is the lack of a bone notch. You give up the notch (which I didn't use often anyway) and gain a good 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch of usable blade length that I use all the time.
2) Tough nylon handles with generously sized rubberized grips fit my big mitts perfectly. These are the most comfortable kitchen scissors I've used. The action is smooth as silk and the big beefy blades feel massive and cut with great authority.
3) Excellent edge grind adds a small measure of serration for wicked cutting power. I'm aware that down the road, when I sharpen these (I'm a serious sharpening buff) I'll grind out these little ridges but this microserration means that these will stay sharp for years. Unlike the rough toothy serrations on a Ginsu knife, these are only located on the bevel and are razor sharp at the point where the inner grind meets the bevel. The quality of the steel is quite good too.
4) Blades separate for cleaning (should be universal for kitchen scissors, but my Zyliss ones lack this feature).
My only criticism of this scissors is the two herb stripping notches in the inner handle are both too big for either thyme or rosemary the only herbs I strip. The smaller one should have been twice as small as it is. Basically that's a quibble.
On the issue of the bone notch, Oxo sells a dedicated poultry shears with a pruner type handle and a bone notch. That's the weapon of choice for those who like to take chickens apart with a shears. I use a chef's knife for that task, personally, as I like to slice the breast meat at the same time. Just for fun I dismembered a roast chicken with these last night and it was a breeze. The big thick steel blades and powerful cutting action made short work of the bird. I never missed the bone notch at all.
All in all best value and best general purpose kitchen scissors in my experience overall.These shears cut anything, from plastic to chicken bones. I had a pair in the shop and my wife's friend said they were the best she had used, even for the kitchen. The leverage with the comfortable handles enables heavy duty cutting and the blades can take it without gouging. My shop shears became kitchen shears and get used by all.

This sharpening steel was by far the lowest quality product I have ever ordered. The rod was not even round, as there were dimples along the body where apparently the grinding process to get it round never even touched. This produced a very uneven surface that was at one point fine, then coarse, then fine again which would play hob with any knife edge.... not to mention the changing of angles as the knife moved down the rod. Nor was the rod straight. It looked as if the rod was warped in the manufacturing process. It's too bad because this sharpening rod is a great idea that could have worked very well, but the quality and manufacturing process was the worst I've seen to date and the rod I received was totally unusable. A sad reflection on how cheap this coutry has become.However, Amazon was very helpful and polite, and made arrangements for a return and complete refund.for who likes cooking with knifes they are cutting well this tools is probably the best balance between quality and cost

where do i start. The hammered damascus is great. Its balance is good and correct weight for a japanese gyutoh. dont expect german kniives weighting because japanese blades are usually much lighter. thin blade and looks to me about a 14 degree angle on the blade. if you want to do heavy prep work which includes chops and boning dont use this knife. it is made for fine prep work.if u want to cut meat and fish and poultry go get a deba not a gyutoh. great prep knife and extremely sharp out of the box. I ran in it on a 8000 grit whet stone out of the box after and a natural stone after and it so sharp that i can split hair, and shave my entire arm in on pass dont try this at home if youve never done it before with an exteremly sharp knife. all in all 5 out 5 i love it. the petty or fruit/paring knife is also great nice light weight for intricate cuts and super thin slices and vegetable peels. i like it making rolls with petty's way better than a nagiri. buy it cuz for the price you cant beat introductory japanese knife. If you worked alot with japanese knifes go buy ao-ko steel and be prepared to spend at least a thousand or 4k in fact for a real ao ko steel knife.I recently ordered the sushi chef Petty Gyuto Set from Yoshihiro Cutlery. The hammered Damascus blades are well-made & truly works of art! Both the Gyuto & the Petty are easy to use, even for a complete amateur like myself, cutting effortlessly through everything I've thrown at them. The price was hard to beat, as well, especially after looking at comparable blades from some better-known brands. My only disappointment is that I did not find them sooner!

I have other products by Best Manufacturers and have been quite happy with them so far. However, this pastry blender has not quite lived up to the name. I like the handle and long upright position but the the flat bottom has only hindered my success in adequately cutting fat into the dry mixture. In a round bowl the cutting blades don't fully make contact with the surface, leaving butter somewhat untouched and sometimes taking some pretty deep gouges out of the bowl surface. If the bottom had a more rounded cutting area this would be the perfect product for me. I bought this set to see what all the hype was about regarding ceramic knives. When I first pulled the knives from their package, one dropped on our tile floor-no chips : ) I have used them several times now and am so pleased with them! At just over $2.00 each, these are a steal. Looking for a restaurant quality steak knife? This would be it. The blade is slightly flexible, just right for steaks, chops, undercooked broccoli (SP?). It slices thru fish and meat with such ease it's almost scary, so handle this knife with care!When cutting, don't try to just push down the blade, instead use a sawing action.. it won't tug or pull the meat or sushi rolls when you do this... it will just slice right thru with ease.
DO NOT use oil to sharpen this knife. You must use a (water) wet stone. Depending on how much you use the knife will determine how often you need to sharpen it, however it seems to hold it's edge for a while.
Be careful of the blade as it can get nicks easily don't just throw it in the drain pan with your pots and pans. (I did this and wanted to cry.. but they rub out with the wet stone)
I don't know if this is normal for this type of knife or not, but the blade will develop a very light rust if you don't dry it off immediately and apply a very light rubbing of vegetable oil on it.
Overall, I just LOVE this knife. It has great balance and weight, the handle is incredibly comfortable and this knife makes everything soooooo much easier.

Well curiosity got the better of me and I discovered the following:
Yes, carbon blades have what is called a natural patina. AKA a natural very light/ orange rust is normal on carbon steel blades. Also, if you are like me and just don't want to see a "rusty" look, do as I suggested abovejust wipe with a little vegetable oil and you will have no visible patina to grate on your esthetic nerves.
I also learned that carbon steel is what allows the knife to obtain such an incredibly sharp edge and what makes them easy to sharpen.
In addition, carbon steel, white steel, and blue steel: no real difference except Blue steel does have a very slightly different composition that makes it marginally better quality. So don't be fooled by all the fancy jargon when shopping for your knife. Unless you are a professional chef who will use the knife 20 times in a single day, this is NOT gonna make the slightest bit of difference to any domestic user.
I also confirmed that the edges of the blade are indeed very prone to nicks b/c of the hardness of the metal (HRC 60-63) so yeah, you really do need to handle these kind of knives with care so that you don't nick the blade.
Progressive International Jumbo Potato Cutter
This video documents how difficult the cutter was to use at first. It got much easier to use once I started trimming the potatoes, as shown in the video.Years ago I bought a potato cutter at a garage sale. It was all steel and a good size (accepting virtually any potato without cutting it down to size). I've been very happy with it.Recently we bought a cabin so needed to add a second set of kitchen tools. One of the items we decided we wanted was a second potato cutter. I ordered this one because of the "jumbo" in the name hoping that it would work as well as our previous garage sale cutter.
Thankfully, this product lives up to the jumbo name. It's larger than our garage sale cutter by 20% or so. It is easy to use and clean up. Not to mention it has a suction cup to attach it to the counter which works surprisingly well.
Pros: Large with two sizes of cutting blades; a larger mesh for traditional fries and smaller mesh for McDonald-like fries.
Cons: It's plastic and steel which makes me wonder about longevity.
All-in-all, I think this was a good purchase.

My wife loves this vegetable cutter and has asked me to order another! She has used ours at least twice a week since we recieved it in Aug 2005 and has had no difficulties with it at all. I'm surprised to see that another purchaser has had problems with this product. Perhaps they received a defective one? At any rate, I would still recommend the product.

After buying similar product for $7 @ Harbor Freight and having the metal frame bend in half the second time we used it, we thought this plastic frame looked more substantial, and would actually be large enough to put a whole potato in it without cutting it in half. The size is great, you can use larger potatoes, and the plastic frame held up OK. However, first try we put a sweet potato in it & it immediately broke the 1/2" blade attachment. Then we tried a regular potato with the 1/4" blade attachment. It worked after very carefully jamming the potato into the blades and slowly pressing the handle down. I hope we can get a replacement blade, because it's not worth the return shipping & hassle to replace the whole thing. Save up your money and get a professional quality french fry cutter for around $80.After posting the above review, I emailed Progressive about the broken blades, they said they don't recommend cutting sweet potatoes in this device, and they sent me a replacement blade. While waiting for it, we used the smaller blade on regular potatoes and it broke, too. From now on, we microwave the potatoes for 1-2 minutes and then it works fine. It DOES open up enough to put very large potatoes in without having to cut them in half. The customer service people were accommodating via email, but I would be reluctant to purchase another one.

I purchased my progressive jumbo cutter a year ago. Since then, I've made french fries multiple times with guests and family visiting. Everyone that sees it is impressed and wants one, especially when they hear how inexpensive it is.
FIRST, THE VIDEO REVIEW of the person getting a potato stuck IS DOING IT WRONG. You don't slowly push the handle. it's just one quick motion whack! My video shows very large baking potato's. Small potato's are even easier. Additionally, I used the shoestring cutter which adds more resistance than the larger fry cutting blade. So the larger fries are even easier to cut.
Having said that, here's what I think you need to know other than that I am a french fry nut:
Pro's:
1. Inexpensive so if it breaks, who cares? Mostly it's fun and a great way to get someone 'watching' you cook to help out!
2. It really works and it is easy to cut potato's (wife and daughter have no problems).
3. It comes with two size cutting blades, one for small diameter (close to shoestring) fries, one for normal cut fries. If you want fries quick, use the smaller cut fries, they cook in just a few minutes!
4. It's easy to take apart and clean.
5. It has a suction cup on the bottom to help with steadying it. It does work well but remember it's not intended to be like gorilla glue, 'cmon get real!
6. As of this writing, conservatively speaking, I would bet I've sliced at least THREE 10 pound bags of potato's in a year.
7. I've never found anything like this at Wal-Mart. Not sure why. You would think this would be a staple on their utensil isle. It's easy to order via Amazon and its quick.
8. It takes average pressure to cut potato's. If you are working with big dense potato's that require seemingly a lot of pressure, STOP see CON# 1. below to make it easy.
9. If you love 'skin on' seasoned fries and you buy this, watch out!... you're gonna be busy.
Con's:
1. It has plastic parts so don't be overly aggressive on a large dense potato. One quick whack does the trick. If not, reduce the size of your potato.
***Really large potato's, like _baking sized_ potato's (in my video example) sometimes need to be trimmed a bit on the end to shorten and/or cut in half (long ways) because it may be too wide to fit in the cutter (what I did to potato #2). I'm talking HUGE potato's, not your every day mid-sized Russet. Average potato's work well.
2. If the potato is DENSE, no matter the size of potato, it helps slice off the very end of the potato so the natural juice acts as a lubricant which helps the potato glide easily through the cutter (if you'll notice, my 2nd potato was even faster). If you try to be the incredible hulk on this thing, you'll break it. It's definitely not meant for commercial kitchens but is perfect for the everyday kitchen.
I just ordered 3 more tonight as last minute gifts.

I bought this item based on various reviews here and on other sites. Usually, when the majority of reviews lean one way, I find they tend to be correct. This time? WRONG WRONG WRONG!!!This veggie cutter is a cheap piece of CR*P! It may be ok if all you want to cut are soft veggies, but if you want to cut potatoes for french fries, dont bother unless you want to blow $20 plus shipping. Mine lasted less than 2 months before it fell apart. A complete waste of my money. I had high hopes based upon reviews I had read on this product, but I was lead down the (potato) garden path. Cutting potatoes (the main reason I bought this) is quite a chore. I had to place it on the floor on a towel to get really good leverage to enable me to cut my potatoes. The main product is plastic and the working parts were less than sturdy steel rods. I am really disappointed with this product. If you are planning on cutting potatoes or other hard veggies, then please do not waste your money. Many people rated this item very high in their reviews. I really cant believe these people cut potatoes with this. This product just IS NOT sturdy enough for that job!! I write this review in hopes that I can save others from throwing their money away searching for a good french fry cutter. If you choose to ignore my warning and it breaks on you (which it will... sooner or later... probably sooner), yes, that will be me you hear saying "I told you so". CAVEAT EMPTOR!!

I like the way the case is made and the soace it has to put my stuff in, only problem is i have global knives and the knives wont stayin theur space. They always fall off and then rumble in the case wich damages them. Im going to have to put an elastic in at the tips of the knives to hold them in. Other than this its sturdy and looks great. I use these for chopping. They are nice because they protect your counters, do not dull your knives, fold into a funnel shape so you can easily transfer chopped food into a pot/pan, and there are four of them. You can use on for meat, one for veggies, etc. They are dishwasher safe. These are about 10x14 in size. I like mine. The only thing, I thought they'd be a bit thicker and would grip the counter better.These are sturdy yet easy to bend when throwing your ingredients in the pot. CUT-UP mats would be more descriptive. Use 'em once & throw 'em away. My knives aren't the sharpest things to come down the Pike, but one use with a little 8" chef's knife virtually shredded these mats. I'm talking deep gouges here folks! And I couldn't get the gouges clean because the mat was scooting around the counter & trying to eat my sponge. No luck in the dishwasher either cuz they flop all over the place. I don't recall reading that they were flexible before I ordered 'em, but I've had flexible before & those held up very well. I bought this to add to my wife's other Henckels knives and it has not disappointed us. This knife more than lives up to what we expect from Henckels as it is well balanced, cuts superbly, and is just very easy to use. It has become one of the most used knives because it's big enough for most stuff, but not so big that you can't use it on the small stuff. The hollow-edge really cuts well, so well that you can really slice stuff thinly with little effort. We are most pleased with this and would very highly recommend it to anyone looking for an outstanding knife.I purchased this knife as part of a three piece set, it is an absolutely fantastic knife! I own a complete set of Zwilling Henckels PRO S knives and the 6" utlity knife is a favorite. It is scalpel sharp (with honing), and works fantastically for finishing meats or slicing veggies.I purchased a less expensive Wusthof Gourmet (stamped steel) 6" utility knife for my girlfriend to match her knife set and there is no comparison in the sharpness of the blades...The Zwilling has a far sharper blade. To be fair the Wusthof Gourmet is an "entry" level set and probably the sharpest knives most people have ever owned but the PRO S series is on a different level, they can be dangerous if you do not now how to handle a sharp knife.

I have tested a lot of knives, but this is my go-to knife in the kitchen. It's perfect for most everything, easy to use size, holds a great edge, good for larger or small hands. The hollow edges help reduce cutting friction, and make it easier to peel away things like cheese, cucumbers, etc.
