Wusthof Silverpoint II 5-Piece Studio Knife Set 8665SB - Blue Handles

Wusthof Silverpoint II 5-Piece Studio Knife Set 8665SB - Blue HandlesI'm kind of surprised that this set carries the Wusthof name. For the price I paid I wasn't expecting much, but figured if it was a Wusthof set it had to be decent. I have a couple other lower-end Wusthof knives and these knives are several notches below my other Wusthof's. The blades seem to be sharp but the handles are really flimsy and made out of rough plastic. There isn't much "heft" to these knives at all and they don't balance well in my opinion. I have a feeling that the blades will stay sharp for a long time because these knives won't be getting much use in my kitchen.

MIU France Stainless Steel Dough Scraper, 6-Inches

MIU France Stainless Steel Dough Scraper, 6-InchesHaving only purchased this dough scraper a few weeks ago, I have already fallen in love. Solidly built with a comfortable handle and inflexible blade, this cuts through frozen butter with ease and provides a great device for cleaning flour off working surfaces.

A must have item for any baker, professional or occasional hobbyist.

I couldn't make bread without it. Perfect! Washes up nicely in the dishwasher, makes cleaning the counter easy. I wish I had two or three, mine is always being used!

I will be using this tool to scrape up chopped items into a pan, and it's perfect for that use. Of course, if I were a baker, I'd probably find that it's original purpose can also be served very well.

I just got this in the mail today, and after reading the reviews to see if it was normal to have a rounded corner on this product, I realized that I just received somebody else's returned defected product. I sincerely believe I received the returned product from "Jemarie Moiselle's" march 13 review from amazon. Additionally, it was packaged insecurely, sliding around the box. I am deeply disappointed because of its defect. Still deciding if it's even worth it to return an item like this at a cheaply priced item. You think that amazon.com would get rid of the product or return it to the manufacturer because of the defect? NO, instead they throw it back into the pool of inventory to make sales...that's so ridiculous!

Want MIU France Stainless Steel Dough Scraper, 6-Inches Discount?

Not a whole lot to say here as it's just a dough scraper. It is very solid, gets the job done, and shows no sign of stain. I have no negatives about it thus far and am pleased with MIU's products overall.

SR Laguiole Steak Knives, Constellation, Set of 6

SR Laguiole Steak Knives, Constellation, Set of 6These are quite heavy and have a relatively nice style, but the emphasis is on relatively. They are not authentic Laguiole French knives but only copy that style; it clearly says "Made in China" on the wrapper around the box. Only slightly more expensive and far better quality are the "Jean Dubost Laguiole 6-Piece Steak Knives -Olivewood" made in France by the top producer of French Laguiole cutlery and are available on Amazon Jean Dubost Laguiole 6-Piece Steak Knives -Olivewood and at Wine Enthusiast. Note that Dubost also make a cheaper (under $100 for a set of 6) line of knives in China under their brand but with thinner stamped instead of forged steel blades.

Came very promptly; very nice wooden storage case; high quality craftmanship on wood handles with details just as depicted. Excellent value for a set of 6.

Update International KGE-04 Stainless Steel Forged Curved Blade Boning Knife, 6-Inch

Update International KGE-04 Stainless Steel Forged Curved Blade Boning Knife, 6-InchLike the rest of the Update cutlery series, the 6" curved boning knife is a well engineered tool. Thinner and more flexible than the straight 6" version (as it should be). Traditional construction using industry standard materials includes German high carbon stainless steel forged blade with bolster, full tang and triple riveted "Pom" polymer (Polyoxymethylene)handle. My local Asian supermarket(and many restaurant suppliers) stock an assortment of Update International knives from well under ten dollars to just over twenty (really). At those prices I would rate with six stars for the value ! Compare to Henkel Int. forged series

Danesco Natural Living Bread Board - w/Crumb Catcher

Danesco Natural Living Bread Board - w/Crumb CatcherI love fresh, crunchy bread--but hate the crumbs it leaves everywhere! This is a fantastic item to have on the counter at all times...the tray catches all the crumbs beautifully, and if needed, the tray can be used to serve the bread in. I get complimented on it all the time. The quality is top notch.

Totally Bamboo Ukulele, Bamboo Cutting Board

Totally Bamboo Ukulele, Bamboo Cutting BoardTo be honest, I ordered this as a gag gift for someone who likes to cook and likes to play guitar. Since I wasn't keeping it, I didn't really care about its quality, but it is actually pretty well made.

Got this for a gift. They loved it so much they were afraid to use it at first. Looks great.

Jean Dubost 3-Piece Cheese Knives Set in Box, Ivory

Jean Dubost 3-Piece Cheese Knives Set in Box, IvoryI love tasting and serving cheeses paired with wines, so I've accumulated a number of cheese sets. I love the Jean Dubost Laguiole sets so much that this just became my third set.

All are different in color and set composition, but all do share the classic Laguiole look and feel that distinguish these serving tools from all others. I love the balance, for I also love the fact that these come with a coverless, wood storage box that keeps the set together in drawers. The box also protects from inadvertently cutting yourself when reaching into a drawer for a loose knife. That is a big plus because the knife in this set is extremely sharp, and the fork tines can also do damage.

What drew me to this particular set is the color. Most of my serving plates, dishes and whatnot are white porcelain. While the ivory color on the handles in this set are a shade darker, they still fit into the visual serving scheme. Frankly I do not care for the gold accents, but that is a personal issue others may love that touch so much that it's the sole reason for purchasing them. But I do love the overall look, and especially the traditional design of each utensil in the set.

One other reason I personally love this set is the utensils that comprise it. The presentation knife is a common design for cheese knives, but this one is versatile enough to cut through most cheeses ranging from hard cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano to softer ones like brie. The spreader is a great addition because once a soft cheese like brie is sliced, the spreader is ideal for evenly spreading it over a piece of baguette or a cracker. Frankly I rarely use the fork that comes with the set, but it would be a perfect utensil for serving dry sausage like salami or even marinated vegetables like roasted peppers or artichoke hearts.

This is a high quality set that is as functional as it is beautiful. I am sure it will not be my last Jean Dubost Laguiole set, but it may remain my favorite among them.

Purchased these steak knives because I like the "aussie steak house" knives. The knives are well made. Blade is stiff and features a serrated and honed cutting blade. Handles are comfortable. Handles secured to full tang with three rivets. The knife cuts well and worked quite well on porterhouse steaks. Good price and super saver make this a winner.

These knives are very similar to the ones in steakhouses everywhere. They are beefy, durable and comfortable to use while performing great. We had some nice looking, expensive steak knives that looked nice on a properly set table but the serrated teeth were so fine that steak would get stuck and hard to clean out. These work just fine with both casual and more formal settings. I only bought 8 but think I will order more. Also, I order from Amazon on a regular basis. Absolutely love the one click buy and everything has always been shipped very promptly.

Napa Style Forged Cutlery Set Knife Set 3PC

Napa Style Forged Cutlery Set Knife Set 3PCVery good knives and they sharpened up well. I wasn't quite impressed with these as I was the Santoku Knives that I got at Costco. They came dull and I had to work the blades to get them sharp. I prefer Victorinox and Cutco knives.

This was not the set that I expected from the picture but there was no return address so I still have the knives. If I had the address to return them, I would. I wanted the set that has indentions (not serrations) near the edge that allows the food being chopped to slip off more easily. I have not opened the box with the knives. I did try to return them to a Napastyle store in Los Gatos, California but they were not in their computer so they would not accept them. Thank you. Glenna Hunter, snowpeak@earthlink.net.

Theee knives stay with me and have never let me down. They are very sharp and stay that way for a long time, they are well-balanced and comfortable to use, and the three sizes take care of all my cutting needs. The accompanying sheaths make it possible to pack them when we travel without worrying about being cut or dulling the knves. Who would guess how valuable tese knives would be at such a reasonable price?

Victorinox Forged 17-Slot Bamboo Knife Storage Block

Victorinox Forged 17-Slot Bamboo Knife Storage BlockThis knife block is very attractive. I first bought the Kapoosh to fit my Victorinox knives, but after reading the reviews I decided to opt for a block that was a better fit and longer lasting.

It fits my 10" Chef's knife, 7" Santoku (w/ a little wiggle room), Henckles bread knife, 4 1/2" utility knife, 6 Steak knives, Kitchen Aid kitchen Shears, w/ 6 empty slots remaining to fill. However, I was a bit disappointed that their didn't seem to be a slot that fit my Santoku or my Steak Knives perfectly. I just thought it odd since the brands matched.

I am happy with the overall look and organization of the slots. Prior to purchasing I reviewed the Henckles blocks, but found there slots and layout a little odd. It might have worked, but I had the money and figured I go with the matching brand. If I had to do it all over, I would have bought the Block w/ the matching set. Prior to buying my first two Victorinox knives, I didn't know I was going to like this brand that much.

After receiving the rose-handled Victorinox steak knives as a wedding gift, I wanted to upgrade our storage block as well. I shopped around and couldn't beat the price, the storage capacity and the attractiveness. I would have purchased one from a different maker if made better sense. It looks great-very eye-appealing. I would recommend on the factors stated above.

The slots are too narrow to hold other than 2 8" Victorinox knifes.

I can't fit my 7" santoku, 10" bread and 8" chef into the block at the same time.

Save your money and buy the snap guards or find another block.

I don't have room for a mag-strip or I'd go there. I figured this block could

accommodate at least 3 top end knives from the same vendor but that's not the case.

It is well made and works for knives that fit. Maybe it's perfect for you if you

don't have any large knives but I can't really recommend it to anyone.

Harold Import 1281 "Tramontina" Porterhouse Steak Knife SET - SET of 4

Harold Import 1281 'Tramontina' Porterhouse Steak Knife SET - SET of 4I originally purchased a couple of these knives at an Ace Hardware, these knives are OK but not the same quality as the Ace knives.

I had purchased Tramontina steak knives years ago and they were the best knives I have ever used. I lost a couple, so ordered new ones and the new ones are a big disappointment. The wooden handles feel rough and the blades have ALREADY gotten rusty after only a couple of weeks of use. They don't cut as well, either. Nothing like the old knives. Had I known all this, I would not have purchased them.

We recently purchased two sets of these knives and we couldn't be happier. For the price they are great. We haven't had them long enough to see how they survive daily trips through the dishwasher only time will tell how the handles hold up. But they are sharp, have a nice balance, and slice through steak like butter. The only thing negative so far is that I almost cut myself because I'm not used to such a sharp steak knife.

I was looking for a nice set of steak knives for my parents and since I never really priced knives before was surprised at how much you can spend! I didn't want lower quality, wanted knives that would stay sharp and were made well with rivets in the handles and preferably wooden handles. I noted that some of the most expensive knives had plastic handles. These knives are very nice, a very good size and heft, good hand feel, and very sharp. If you want a good set of knives that look good, feel good, and do the job without spending hundreds of dollars (OK, I'm sure those knives have some sort of quality for the price if that's what you're looking for), these are the knives for you. Good knives that don't break the bank and they seem well made so should last a while.

Wusthof Ikon 6-Inch Cook's Knife with Blackwood Handle 4996/16

Wusthof Ikon 6-Inch Cook's Knife with Blackwood Handle 4996/16I added this knife along with 2 other prep knives from Amazon (Yoshihiro's 5.3" petty knife & Wusthof's 5" Santoku) to my arsenal of kitchen knives and I'm now all set...Forever. I have an old Wusthof 8" Chef's knife and it always seemed too big for the style of prep work I like to do at home. So, I spent a month here researching all of Amazon's kitchen cutlery and settled on the 3 prep knives I'll ever need for prep work. This 6" Chef's knife is exactly what I thought it would be....perfect in terms of balance and ergonomics. Finally, this has got to be the best value for money in terms of the Ikon line of knives at $80 and its size will fit the bill for any household that needs a high quality & great all-around kitchen knife.

I received this knife yesterday and it is beautiful, balanced and sharp. I knew Wusthofs were quality but I had no Idea. Compared to the knifes I have, this is worlds above. I am investing in the rest of the set. The delivery was super fast! I didn't think I would get it in time for Thanksgiving but it was here in two days and all the uninvited cooks were fighting over this knife!

There's a lot of hoopla out there about knives in general. There are fanboys aplenty for every brand from Ronco "Never-dulls" to the Shun culinaryphiles. Here's what you really need to know:

Mainstream knife blades are one of two types: European or Japanese. European style knives have a 20 degree edge and are designed for "Rocking." Additionally, the knife is weighted at towards the blade. Rocking is a style of cutting where the user doesn't let the knife leave the cutting board but allows it to pivot up and down. This is similar to kneading dough but not letting your hands leave the dough. Japanese style knives have a 10 degree edge angle and are designed for "Chopping." Chopping is where the user incorporates a quick "chopping" action to dice food. Conversely from the European style, these knives are balanced. This helps with the feel and quick movement needed for chopping. From here, it is easy to see why Japanese style knives would need a 10 degree edge as it allows for this type of action. Because of the blade angle, these knives tend to stay sharper for a longer period of time. However, they are a pain to sharpen.

With that said, this knife is European. I came from a Santoku Calphalon Katana series where I chopped everything (not that I knew what I was doing, but because it felt right). Switching to this knife, the chopping action did not work very well. When I switched to the rocking motion, this knife was amazing. Also, sharpening this knife is much easier to do (as compared to the Japanese style) as conventional pull sharpeners work really well. I also got a honing rod J.A. Henckels 9-Inch Poly Sharpening Steel. This is a MUST as it allows you to straiten the blade edge and keep your knife sharper for longer. You can also get Wusthof 10-Inch Sharpening Steel which I believe is sold by Amazon (at the time of post).

{REVIEW}

In short, this is a great little knife. It is balanced toward the bladed. This is sharp and has remained sharp even though I use it 3 days out of the week. I attribute this to the honing steel that I use every time I use it. It should be noted that the handle is almost as long as the blade. If you have small hands, you'll find yourself choking up on the handle. Additionally, the blade itself is not that wide. I would have thought that a chef's knife would be a little wider than this. As a reference, this would probably be 70% Chef and 30% slicer. Because of the width, I'm a bit more careful when smashing garlic cloves than I normally am, but this still gets the job done. The Blackwood handle isn't anything special. It's nice, but it's treated so that you really can't tell if it really is wood or not. This is because the handle can't be absorbent as it would foster bacteria. All in all, this is a great knife that has remained sharp.

Proteak Teak Cutting Board Rectangle 16-by-12-by-2-Inch with Juice Canal, End Grain

Proteak Teak Cutting Board Rectangle 16-by-12-by-2-Inch with Juice Canal, End GrainThis cutting board made of end grain is heavy and sturdy enough for most purpose.

The cutting board is reversible with one side with a juice canal.

The 16x12 surface is big enough for most of my cuttings and I do not not buying a bigger size.

On top of everything the look of this cutting board is really awesome.

I would have given it a 5 start if the glue line where not imperfect in some spot making me fear that the board will not last forever.

This is one solid cutting board much harder than oak! I believe I will have it for the rest of my life with proper care. I rubbed in edible mineral oil (get it at the pharmacy)after I first washed it in warm soapy water (air dry) and after three months it still doesn't need another treatment. The canal is deep enough for catching juices from a rib roast and for using when you cut up partially frozen chicken. It doesn't stain when you cut up red bell pepper. I use the canaled side for meat and the smooth side for vegetables. Yes, with the end grain board you can use it for everything with a proper washing in between of course AND it doesn't dull your knives.

I shopped for a couple of weeks before I selected this board. I looked at Michigan Maple Block, which I really wanted, but the rectangular size was too big for my cupboard. I really wanted a John Boos cherry block, but it was more than I wanted to spend. While I would have liked this a little thicker, it is sufficient for what I use it for and the dimensions are perfect for my cupboard. It is a beautiful board and I enjoy oiling it. It is perfect for the chopping I do and is better for my Shun knife than my other thin board. It is a great board for a great price. I would buy it, again.

I just received my cutting board. It is quite a substantial piece. When I opened the box, the board looked rather dull and dry. I am using Boos Board Cream to cure the cutting board. The Proteak website said to put 4 to 5 coats on to properly cure the board. I could not believe the difference before and after. I should have taken a picture before I touched the board. This thing is gorgeous! The board cream brought out the deep, rich beauty of the wood. I think this will be a fixture on the counter top. It would be a shame to put something so beautiful inside a cabinet where it could not be seen. I have never had such a nice cutting board. I am glad I bought it and have no doubt it will last the rest of my life.. with care.

I am also very pleased with the Boos Board Cream I bought with the cutting board. I have a couple of very nice wooden bowls for fruit, etc. I cannot wait to see how they look after a treatment with the board cream.John Boos 5 Ounce Block Board Cream with Beeswax

Black & Silver Plus Knife Sharpener

Black & Silver Plus Knife SharpenerThis was recommended to me as the right sharpener for my Global knives. This is the right way to dull your Global knives. It is OK for lower end knives but never gets them as sharp as my Chefs Choice. The minosharp is simple and quick but so is the Accusharp which is close to 1/5 the price.

Ultimately, manual sharpening with a stone is slow but gets you razor sharpness.

Not recommended. You have plenty of other options.

Lower price, just as fast, sharper edge, easy to use = Accusharp

Higher price, slightly faster sharpening, more versatile, very very sharp but not razor sharp, easy to useChef's choice

Similar price (depends on brand), slower sharpening, requires skill, knowledge and practice but with all that you get the sharpest edge = good quality whetstones use the water stones less messy than the oil stones but both are effective

I've used it for about a year. it gets a knife sharp enough for sushi work in about 2 minutes. Don't push down too hard or you might damage the stone wheels. Sooner or later you'll have to get new wheels. Don't know how easy that is.

The Hubby and I have an agreement. If he wants good vittles to appear before him on a regular basis, he must make sure my knives are sharp. To that end and because he loves gadgets & food, he owns several whet stones and knife hones that take way too much time for me to use. He bought me this to do quickie honing sessions on my knives that take the most abuse (santoku, paring and slicing knives). It is easy to use and generally does a good job. It is not all that good at taking gouges out of knives. Nor will it help you guys who think that just because those food network people drag their sharp edges across the cutting board to scape things into a pile that you can do it too (Read: it can't help you if you square off your edge). However, if you take reasonable care of your knives and understand proper knife care, this is an awesome tool to have. It is especially helpful for those inbetween knife sharpenings and when you are chopping a lot of food.

Good till it broke then told "there isnt any warranty for this item...." by the canadian distributor. Very disappointing and will not buy again. I assume same applies to Global knices. Back to Henkell

Want Black & Silver Plus Knife Sharpener Discount?

It makes dull knifes sharper, maybe not quite shaving-sharp, but reasonably sharp. Plastic construction feels fairly solid, though sometimes I wasn't quite sure if I had the angle right through the guides, especially on curved blades. There's about an inch toward the handle that the sharpener can't really get to with the cover on. Would be nice to have a 3rd fine wheel for honing (the two included ones are medium & coarse).

This is my first sharpener of it's kind, so I wasn't really sure what to expect and don't really have a point of reference.

Messermeister Pro-Touch 4-1/4-Inch Orange Mini Santoku with Sheath

Messermeister Pro-Touch 4-1/4-Inch Orange Mini Santoku with SheathLet me first say that I bought this knife for one purpose -to use as a portable and lightweight chef knife when hiking and camping. For that purpose, I believe you are going to have a tough time finding a better deal.

It is very sharp, right out of the package. Blade seems to be fairly decent polished stainless, not too thin. It weighs almost nothing. I haven't weighed it yet, but I'd be surprised if it was more than 1 oz. The sheath also fits super tight, so it won't come off accidentally.

I would definitely not buy this for an everyday knife at home, but it is perfectly suitable as a throwaway or just something you're going to use every so often. The weight and fitted sheath are the aspects that I enjoy the most. It's a cheap little thing, but I would definitely not use the word "junk." I don't think you are going to find anything better within $5 of this price point.

I'm a Messermeister fan and saw this knife for such a reasonable price on Amazon, I had to try it. It's great for working with fruit and also trimming silver skin off meat. Unbelievable value. I wish they had more sizes but I can't find any.

Victorinox Swiss Classic 3-1/4-Inch Paring Knife with Spear Tip, Orange Handle

Victorinox Swiss Classic 3-1/4-Inch Paring Knife with Spear Tip, Orange HandleI love this paring knife so much that I purchased a second one to make sure that I will always have one handy. It is perfect in every way. The size is just right. The handle fits my hand like it was made for it and it is ergonomical. The blade is very sharp and shaped perfectly to cut through the hardest veggies, like carrots, without any effort at all. I really love the colors available, also. I have the orange and the pink colors. They are both beautiful. After so many years of wasting money on expensive paring knives that I didn't like, I am so happy now with the Victorinox knives and will never buy another brand again. I also purchased the utility knife and love it just as much as the paring knives. It is perfect for cutting larger veggies, like cabbage.

I was disappointed with this knife. The blade is not as thin and sharp as the review led me to believe. I have another pairing life that I like much better.

J.K. Adams 9-1/2-Inch-by-9 inch by 6-1/2-Inch Maple Wood Universal Knife Storage Block, 13-Slot

J.K. Adams 9-1/2-Inch-by-9 inch by 6-1/2-Inch Maple Wood Universal Knife Storage Block, 13-SlotCustomer review from the Amazon Vine Program This is not your run-of-the-mill, keep-your-knives-in-a-45 degree-angle-knife block.

It is distinctively higher than most of those blocks that store the knifes in a 45 degree angle. But it is also distinctively less deep then those other blocks, contributing to a relatively slender footprint.

Because the slots for the big knives are not only on top of the block, but extend half down the front, it is a very different motion with which you pull a knife out not with one swooping pull, but kind of first straight forward and then out. After a few times, this motion becomes natural, though, and you should not have any problems with that. Our big chef knifes have about 5 inches room between the end of their handles and the cabinet floor when they are in the block, and that is ample space to put them into the block and pull them out.

The height of the block is sufficient to not let our big chef knives touch the counter-top.

A very nice feature of this block is its open construction, which lets the knives dry very easily should there still be some moisture when you store them away. With most 45 degree blocks, the moisture is trapped in the narrow slots and could contribute to forming mold there.

Also, my wife uses our knife as holder to dry out her water bottles, which works now much better through the upright position the bottles are in, sitting on one of the knife handles, than formerly with our old 45 degree block.

The block is also very handsomely crafted and seems to be very durable. Plus, I personally like the light wooden color, and that they use maple wood and not plastic, and mineral oil as surface protection instead of some form of paint.

This block is certainly not a cheap buy, but it's features and looks make it worth the price.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program If you feel, as a home cook, that your knives and block are sufficient for your needs, you may not wish to consider the J. K. Adams block. However, if you are a chef, a serious home cook, or one who aspires to be one or the other and will be purchasing your knives individually, this beautifully crafted maple block may be one you should consider. For example, you may wish to choose your knives from one manufacturer, but if you want top quality knives of your choice from Westhof, Viking, Masahiro, Henckel Pro, or Messermeister, Ginsu, Cutco or any number of excellent knife manufacturers you may be selecting a block as well. Serious chefs will consider everything from the handle of a knife, the steel, to the way it balances in one's hand. Selecting a proper block should receive the same consideration.

This block is designed to hold an assortment of knives. A chef's knife does range in size from six to twelve inches so those who are considering adding the larger knife need to keep in mind that the block itself is approximately nine inches tall. Carving, slicing, utility, boning, fillet, paring, and other specialty knives can either be placed on the top or bottom sleeves. One word of caution is that the six sleeves for your smaller knives are open on the bottom. This block obviously will not fit every knife blade in the world and blades longer that five inches may be damaged if you simply toss them in the shorter sleeve without thinking. If you are considering purchasing this beautifully crafted maple block for your home or professional kitchen, think about the knives you'll be using.

I definitely like the open design of this block. The first thing that came to mind is that it would be easy to clean and much more sanitary than the closed in blocks. There will be little chance of any stray pieces of food lodging in the slots as the J. K. Adams Universal Knife Block has an open, easy to clean design. I would not recommend it if you have little hands that are helping you out in your home kitchen. Another thing I like is that when I reach for a knife I can tip it forward and toward me instead of pulling it straight out or up as in some blocks I've seen. The block can be "seasoned" and maintained with a touch of mineral oil now and then. This block is not for everyone, but for those who want beauty, quality, and function, this is one that you may wish to add to your counter.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program When I got this, I tore off the shrink wrap, took my knifes out of the drawer they'd been sleeping in and put them in this rack. First the big knives and they went in swimmingly, looked good.

Then I put in the steak knives in front and thunk, thunk, thunk, six thunks I heard as the knives dropped through their allotted slots and hit the marble counter under the rack. It was too short, the part of the rack for the steak knives was too short. Too short it was.

I got another set of steak knives, same deal, the rack was too short. You drop the knives in and they hit with a thunk whatever is below the rack. Somebody should have measured when they designed this thing.

And before you ask, I tried two sets of steak knives and both sets found this rack wanting. So I called my neighbor, asked her to bring over her steak knives, the ones that are in the knife rack by her microwave. And my rack was too short for them too. So, all in all, this rack was a waste of wood.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program This holds 6 "short" knives (like steak knives) and 7 larger knives total.

This items takes up the space of TWO of my smaller cheap-o butcher blocks, but only holds half the amount of knives. (it's footprint is twice as large as one old knife holder, so it takes up more of the premium counter space.

There is considerably less clearance above this item when beneath kitchen cupboards, than, compared to my old knife holders. That's why I say it is too tall. I'm used to being able to just stick my hand under the cupboard to get to my knives. This one would force me to leave it out on the counter closer to the counter's edge than the back splash, making it more possible that it could get knocked off by accident. With young kids in the house, the risk of that happening just isn't worth it.

There is hardly any room between the large knives for the smaller ones to fit in when full.

In a world of innovative design, this plain old wooden box with slits in it doesn't impress me.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I love to cook, and that generates an equivalent love of kitchen gadgets. Over the years, I've ended up with an assortment of extra kitchen knives that don't go in the knife block that came with my nice set. There's a bread knive, tomato knives, steak knives and more. For years I've had them in little bins in a kitchen drawer, but I like having my knives at more convenient reach, in a knife block.

The J.K. Adams 13-Slot Maple Universal Knife Storage Block seemed a good option to collect all of those loose knives into a block. When I received it, however, the block seemed oversized considering how many knives it holds, and is rather utilitarian in appearance, promoting function over form while I prefer a happy balance of both qualities. The wood is an attractive color and finish, but the shape is just completely uninspired. Worse, it is almost completely vertical with no slant to the unit. I prefer a knife block that has a bit of a slant and makes the knives easier to access quickly.

The block has 7 slots for larger knives and 6 for small knives. The small knives fit everything from steak knives to small tomato knives. The larger slots will hold butcher knives, bread knives, and more. Even still, the block takes up much more counter space than I would like for something that only holds thirteen knives.

This knife block works, but it isn't the best option I've seen.

Kyocera Revolution Series 3-1/7-Inch Paring Knife, Black Blade

Kyocera Revolution Series 3-1/7-Inch Paring Knife, Black BladeThe fact that you are even reading this suggests that you already know the arguments in favor of ceramic knives. Ceramic knives are harder than steel knives, can be made much sharper than steel knives, hold their edge ten times longer than steel knives, are lighter than steel knives, won't brown foods, transfer a metallic taste or smell, or rust.

You probably also know the disadvantages of ceramic knives. Unlike steel knives ceramic knives can chip or break so you want to avoid dropping them, tossing them in a sink or kitchen drawer, or arguably even washing them in a dishwasher. (Most ceramic knives come in fitted plastic packing material that can be saved, or you can store them in something like this Kyocera Bamboo 3-Slot Knife Block.) If you actually succeed in dulling a ceramic knife, it will need to be professionally sharpened, though Kyocera has come out with a sharpener for home use: Kyocera Electric Diamond Knife Sharpener for Kyocera Ceramic Knives. Unlike steel knives ceramic knives cannot flex without breaking so there can be no such thing as a ceramic boning knife, and you only want to use ceramic knives to cut boneless meats. Finally, although using a proper cutting board is a good idea with fine steel knives, it is an absolute requirement with ceramic knives; using a ceramic knife to cut something on a plate is an absolute no-no.

So the only remaining question is whether to go cheap: Harbor Freight Tools Ceramic 3 Inch Paring Knife or expensive: Kyocera Revolution Series Ceramic 3 1/7 Inch Paring Knife Black Handle, Black Blade, and due to the fortuitous timing of a couple of good sales I can offer an opinion.

Blade: The Harbor Freight blade is double bevel ground while the Kyocera Revolution blade is chisel ground. Along with Kyocera's claims that its micro-grain ceramic is more dense than its competitors, this should result in a sharper blade, but any difference was too subtle for me to detect. Both knives will be MUCH sharper than any steel knife you are used to, cutting through citrus rinds (and even seeds!) like butter.

Handle: Both the Harbor Freight and Kyocera Revolution have superficially similar ergonomic handles, but I noted a couple of significant differences. In the Harbor Freight the finger guard is part of the handle while in the Kyocera Revolution it is part of the blade. Surprisingly, I found the Kyocera Revolution handle a bit slippery, which in light of the consequences of dropping it is significant. The tackier surface of the Harbor Freight handle provided me with a surer grip.

Color: The Kyocera Revolution paring knife is also available with a white blade in six handle colors:

Kyocera Revolution Series Ceramic 3 1/7 Inch Paring Knife Black Handle,

Kyocera Revolution Series Ceramic 3 1/7 Inch Paring Knife Blue Handle,

Kyocera Revolution Series Ceramic 3 1/7 Inch Paring Knife Green Handle,

Kyocera Revolution Series Ceramic 3 1/7 Inch Paring Knife Orange Handle,

Kyocera Revolution Series Ceramic 3 1/7 Inch Paring Knife Red Handle,

Kyocera Revolution Series Ceramic 3 1/7 Inch Paring Knife Yellow Handle;

the Harbor Freight paring knife is available in any handle color,...

as long as it is black.

Sharpening: If you manage to dull your Kyocera Revolution knife, Kyocera will sharpen it in return for shipping and handling; if you manage to dull your Harbor Freight knife, you are on your own.

Price: This obviously varies but in most cases you can expect to pay between twice as much and four times as much for the Kyocera Revolution paring knife as for the Harbor Freight paring knife.

Note: An inexpensive Kyocera Ceramic Y Peeler in all of the matching handle colors, is also available.

These knives are extremely sharp and seem to hold an edge but the blade is thicker than steel and consequently the blade tends to get stuck in food that doesn't just fall away. Other than that these knives are great. They slice a ripe tomato without crushing and raw meat with ease. I use these knives as often as I can.

I have purchased a dozen paring knives over twenty years and these do not compare to permanently SHARP, (just bought one $140 Shun, little different) ... I lost my last ceramic and boy, boy did I miss it, now I love to cut everything in sight again... cannot go wrong (do not buy with little kids, too sharp and might break) GREAT PRODUCT A+ buy three and leave them around for all tasks... lasts forever!

Note that this isn't a professional review. I cook for fun and not a knife "expert"

You won't be able to shave with this knife.

That being said, the knife is really sharp, so you won't have trouble getting transparent cherry tomato slices if you wish to.

It feels really good in the hand and being so light is an advantage for a pairing knife in my opinion.

It also looks good and makes you want to use it :)
