Zyliss Pizza Slicer with Crust Cutter

Zyliss Pizza Slicer with Crust CutterI'm quite upset about this product, considering I bought it from a local hardware store and paid a premium for it, with misplaced confidence in the brand name. It lasted about 6 months (light home use) before the cheap plastic nut holding on the disc broke. (It's actually a small metal nut embedded in the larger plastic thumb-screw.)

This is a really incredibly shortsighted design decision on an otherwise nice product. Zyliss, stop cutting corners to save yourselves some pennies; It hurts you in the long run, as I will never buy another Zyliss product. Amazon shoppers, do not buy.

I agree with the other negative reviews. I bought due to advertising and Zyliss' reputation but have been very disappointed. The "crust cutter" is useless for my thick-crust, homemade pizza. It's duller and thicker than a table knife, so it merely smashes the crust; it cannot cut because there is nothing to cut with. The nut holding the wheel on is so shoddy that it disintegrated after only a few uses, and I've been unable to locate an acceptable replacement part. Buyer beware!

Whoever designed this thing needs to -in the words of Agent K -"go home and do it again".

The cutting wheel is wobbly, never aligns with the crust slicer (which doesn't really "slice" as much as "flatten"). Eventually, after tightening it so many times, the plastic screw just broke and I chucked the thing in the trash.

Not recommended.

What we really love about this slicer is that it is perfect for our needs. We make our own protein bars. Part of our recipe uses egg whites as a binding agent so we have to bake them.

Well this slicer makes cutting them a breeze, and the "crust cutter" edger allows us to cut down right next to the edges of the pyrex pans that we use. A normal slicer won't get into those corners so this thing is GREAT.

Want Zyliss Pizza Slicer with Crust Cutter Discount?

This cutter solves the problem of not being able to cut all the way to the crust in a deep-dish pan or a box. It also comes apart easily for cleaning, which is great. The only reason I knocked off a star is that the cover doesn't stay on at all. Give it a better cover to help protect it in my drawer and it gets five stars.

Le Creuset Stoneware Oval Serving Platter

Le Creuset Stoneware 16' Oval Serving Platter, MarseilleThe Le Creuset platter is beautiful and will provide a stunning culinary display; however, it is much smaller than I expected it to be.

I envisioned a large, heavy platter, since one set of measurements quoted it to be 16-1/2 by 14".

Unfortunately, instead of it being 14" wide, it is 11" wide. (Not 16-1/2 by 11 inches.)

I've measured every way, but I can't come up with their 14" width. Why do they provide two sets of measurements? Are they measuring the shipping box? Strange.

I previously read where someone placed a turkey on their platter. No way, this is way too small for that! Maybe cut-up turkey slices, but not a 12-pound turkey.

All in all, the Caribbean blue is gorgeous and the platter's high-gloss finish is silky smooth; however, I feel it is overpriced for its diminutive size.

I bought this platter six months ago and use it at least once a week. It's perfect for arranging appetizers that need to be heated in the oven. The literature reads 'microwave safe', but it is a tad too big for my microwave oven. And about the size, I agree, a turkey would seem disproportionate. Where they get the 14" measurement is indeed a mystery. It is 16 X 11, with the actual serving area being 12 X 7.5 inches, maybe sufficient for a roasted capon or a duck. This is a very attractive, versatile serving piece also durable. I would like one in every color!

The platter is gorgeous. It's not large enough for a huge turkey, but you're not supposed to purchase one that is over ten pounds anyway. Substantial piece. Le Creuset stoneware is top notch. For all the people complaining that it is made in China, so what. It may be made there but it is under the tight quality control that Le Creuset demands. I'd purchase again.

Although the first two platters were delivered damaged, Amazon made it super simple to return the item and the third time, alleluia, this beautiful platter arrived in one piece. We had originally ordered it for Thanksgiving but with the two previous contre-temps, it didn't happen so we'll be happy to use it for Christmas dinner. As with most Le Creuset product, quality is second to none. Very happy with our purchase.

Love the size. The handles make it so easy for serving, you don't have to try to balance the platter. Really nice quality now I want another one in a different color!!!

Wusthof 12-Inch Sharpening Steel

Wusthof 12-Inch Sharpening SteelInitially I didn't understand the steel and what honing was. Even after I figured it out I didn't see the point until I ran into this incredible steel. Unlike the cheap little ones included with sets, this steel has a big enough diameter, long enough length, and incredible machining on the grooves to really effectively hone every time out. It also has an awesome molded handle and big chunky hanging ring (which you might need because a 12" steel will stick out of most blocks).

Why use a steel to hone? Stainless steel is ductile and the edge of a knife is a place where the steel is very very thin. In use the very edge will bend or fold over microscopically. Then, then next cut you make will be on what will be on the fold rather than on the sharp edge. These micro folds can be straightened out by the use of a Steel a process called "honing". Honing involves wiping the blade across a hard steel rod which has a large number of tiny parallel grooves cut in it. When the wiping motion is done like carving at the angle the edge is ground the steel literally unfolds the edge and gives the fine edge a micro ripple. In this way, steeling a sharp knife that has recently gone dull is like magic full sharpness is immediately restored. Over time, however, all this cutting and steeling will actually wear metal away from the edge, or some folds will become permanent and the edge itself will become dull and the knife will need to be sharpened.

"Steeling", or "honing" is emphatically NOT "sharpening". These are two fundamentally different knife care techniques. In short, the steel restores the edge as much as it can, without removing metal; and the sharpening actually removes metal to grind a new edge. Sharpening is done on an abrasive stone or a metal plate onto which diamond or other abrasive has been adhered. Sharpening actually removes metal so it actually reduces the life of the knife to a certain extent.

The big message here is to steel frequently (ideally every single time you use the knife right before you use it) and to sharpen infrequently (no more than once or twice a year). Chefs are always depicted holding the steel in the air pointing up and flicking the knife rapidly over it. In practice it is almost impossible to properly steel a knife this way. Hold the steel facing down with the tip pressed into your cutting board and cut down, pulling the knife towards you with a slicing motion, with your knife at the grind angle (10-15 degrees for Asian style and 20-25 degrees for Western) while the steel is stabilized rock solid. This way the steel is held rigidly vertical and the angle is easy to see. When you get the angle right you can feel the edge "bite" a little into the steel.

Since you should be using the steel frequently, I highly recommend you get the best steel you can. There are some very real differences in the machining of the grooves. You should also be aware that "diamond" or "sharpening" steels are for sharpening, NOT honing. The other big factor in choosing a steel is length. Get a big long one. Theoretically your steel should be 1-2" longer than your longest knife so a 9" steel ought to be fine if you have an 8" knife. In practice, the longer the steel, the more comfortable and easy it is to steel. I've tried honing an 8" knife with a 9" steel and you have to do two passes to get one stroke. Henkel's 12" steel is a best seller and a great value: J.A. Henckels Twin Pro S 12-Inch Honing Steel. I, personally, went with Wusthof's, which is much more expensive but is utterly exquisite and a dynamite pleasure to use: Wusthof 12 in. Sharpening Steel. Be aware that these big long 12" steels will stick out of most knife blocks. The excellent functionality is well worth the little bit of trouble of it sticking out a bit.

FYI the item reviewed is Wusthof's 4474 the 12" steel with modern square handle. 4474 is the item being sold here the photograph was correct until late May 2008, when the photograph of 4471 (a 12" Wusthof steel with an old fashioned beehive handle) was substituted. The 4471 is also excellent with a virtually identical steel. However I find the handle of 4474 more comfortable. Be aware that the photograph is not of the item on sale. To see 4474 link to

I was skeptical of how well this would improve cutting quality between stone sharpenings. Much to my surprise it really made a big difference in how well the my knife cut (Wusthof Classic chef knife). These are supposed to realign the microfine blade edge rather than remove material like a stone would. It will not replace stone sharpening. These are not recommended for the super hard Japanese knives as edge may chip.

I really like well made high quality tools like this. The large square metal bolster that is supported at all edges by the handles is a nice touch. This particular steel does have longitudinal ridges. Wuthof sharpening steels are noted for their hardness and longevity. I have yet to had a disappointment with a Wusthof product.

I hold the steel with the tip down on a heavy towel and stroke the sharp edge downward. Personally I would never steel with the knife edge toward my body.

I made a mistake and ordered the wrong item. This sharpener was listed with other similar items that were what I wanted and I didn't notice the description change as I placed the order. I've contacted CutleryAndBeyond and they've agreed to refund the purchase price. Vendor was quite helpful so, for now at least, all's well.

I've not yet received the refund. Should there be a problem, I'll add an appropriate follow-up comment.

Ginkgo Firenze 20-Piece Stainless Steel Flatware Set, Service for 4

Ginkgo Firenze 20-Piece Stainless Steel Flatware Set, Service for 4I just received my order of flatware. I ordered one 20-piece set, as I wasn't sure if I would like it and figured paying for return shipment on one set would be cheaper than multiple sets.

I love the weight and feel of the flatware. I specifically researched heavier, casual flatware. (I found a website that sells flatware and had a specific page listing the heaviest sets out there Gingko Firenze was listed. They were selling the 20 piece set for more than Amazon, though.)

The price here on Amazon, I think, is an awesome deal!

I gave 4 stars, and not 5, for this reason: the knife handles. Another reviewer seemed bothered about hollow-handled knives that came with this set. In my research, it seems that (for stainless flatware) hollow-handled knives are of better quality than solid knives. The maker can use hollow handles and insert higher-quality knife blades, rather than stamping the whole solid knife out of one piece of metal.

In fact, looking at Ginkgo's own site (where they sell Firenze, but again, at a higher cost than here on Amazon,) they sell both solid knives and hollow-handled knives. The hollow-handled knives are more expensive.

So in my limited, internet-researched opinion, one would WANT hollow-handled knives.

I was looking forward to getting my 20-piece set with hollow-handled knives, but my set seems to have solid knives. Oh well it's still a great price, and really, the knives are the least used pieces of our flatware.

So for getting solid knives instead of hollow-handled, I gave the 4 stars instead of 5.

As for other reviewers' comments on the balance of the flatware and having them fall off of dishes I don't know. My flatware is usually on the table, and if I'm walking around or clearing the table, I tend to make sure the flatware is fully on the plate.

Overall great price, great look and feel, very happy! I just ordered a few more 20-piece sets!

I was having quite a time replacing my silverware. I wanted service for 12, 18/10 stainless, heavy, and minimal design. I also had a very modest budget. This flatware has been great; it fit all of my requirements and then some. And with the four for three promotion, I was able to get service for 16! The knives are very sharp without being serrated, and they feel great in the hand. I personally feel that the larger spoon is a little too large, but it certainly isn't an issue.

Overall, I am very happy with my purchase. As I've only had this flatware for a couple of months, I can't really attest to their wear. I will try and update in 6 months to a year.

UPDATE 1/15/12:

I've had this flatware for about 6 months now, and it's really holding up. Really, my only issue is that there are these little spots on them. It could be the flatware itself, or it could be my terrible terrible dishwasher/city water/detergent. Using barkeeper's friend, though, the spots come right off.

Buy Ginkgo Firenze 20-Piece Stainless Steel Flatware Set, Service for 4 Now

This flatware is very heavy, which is why we chose it. The knife blades are sharper than typical and not serrated. We noticed two issues though: the knife handles are hollow and don't feel like the rest of the set. A couple of handles had minor but noticeable rough spots on the ends.

After using the flatware for quite a while now, we've decided that such heavy handles are a hassle. If you leave a handle hanging over the edge of a bowl or plate the additional weight causes it to tip sometimes. That happens surprisingly often. That's not a criticism of this flatware, just an observation.

It's absolutely perfect in every way. I bought 3 sets because I loved it so much. Simple yet stylish.

Want Ginkgo Firenze 20-Piece Stainless Steel Flatware Set, Service for 4 Discount?

I've been using my Ginko Firenze flatware for almost a year now and am very pleased with my purchase. When it came time to finally retire my inherited, lower end flatware I looked and many, many patterns for weeks on end to find some I liked. After trying several other patterns from various makers none really completely satisfied me until I received the this set. The flatware is the most comfortable to hold of any I have ever used. The wide, smooth handle makes this pattern a joy to eat with (not something I really thought about until I started shopping for flatware). The pattern is quite heavy which I really like. Not the heaviest I tried but still much more substantial than most and a perfect weight for me.

I guess I lucked out on my order because I received the higher end hollow handle knives, not the solid handle knives the other reviewer received. Also, my set if very well finished with no rough spots anywhere on any of the pieces. I found the pattern to be better looking in person than in the pictures.

I only have a couple of minor quibbles. I wouldn't mind the soup spoon being a little longer. Also, as mentioned in another review, since there is a lot of weight in the handles there is a tendency to fall off the plate if you hang the handle over the edge of the plate. I don't find this to be an issue at all since I know it will happen and just don't hang the handles over the edge when walking to the kitchen.

I think this Ginko set is very good bargain when comparing it to the $60/set patterns I tried before settling on the Firenze.

Miyako 4' Ceramic Paring Knife, Glossy WhiteI bought this knife for my daughter and at first was disappointed because the blade is wider than I wanted. I love a thin, sharp knife! Reed & Barton 1800 18/10 Stainless Steel 4-Piece Flatware Hostess Set

Reed & Barton 1800 18/10 Stainless Steel 4-Piece Flatware Hostess SetBetter than I expected. Just beautiful, sturdy, shiny, strong. Good weight. Feels good in your hand. Bought service for 12 and the 4-piece Hostess Set. Worth every penny but look around, I found prices for (new)one place setting of 5, for as much as $55 and as low as $35. I plan on getting the 3-piece Serving Set, 12 iced teaspoons and 12 cocktail forks too.

A number of years ago I purchased 12 place settings of Reed & Barton 1800, but no serving pieces. Decided, now is the time. This Hostess Set is so fine, very heavy and high quality. If you have 1800 flatware, do yourself a favor and get the hostess set. It will make you feel good every time it is used.

Waterford Monte Clare by Reed & Barton 65-Piece Stainless-Steel Flatware Set with Hostess Set and C

Waterford Monte Clare by Reed & Barton 65-Piece Stainless-Steel Flatware Set with Hostess Set and Chest, Service for 12I love this set of silverware by Reed Barton. It pays to buy a nice set of flatware, no more bent fork tines, the silverware doesn't tarnish, spot or discolor. The style is very contemporary/transitional so it will go with very nearly any style of dishes and decor you chose to put this gorgeous flatware next to. Everyone carries on about Oneida but I find Reed & Barton's quality and styles to be second to none.

I am thoroughly pleased with the weight and feel of this flatware. Getting the hostess set AND the silver chest at this price was an additional bargain. The price is better than other websites I visited. The pieces are "continental" style, which means the handles are longer than American style flatware, and they feel perfectly balanced in your hand. There are no rough edges and being that they're 18/10 composition, they shouldn't get dull over time. I'm glad I purchased these for my new home!

I recently order the 65 piece Waterford Monte Clare flatware set with chest and have been very satisfied with flatware portion of my purchase. The chest is another story. The chest I received was not like the one pictured in the description. The pictured chest shows the Waterford symbol on the inside lid but the chest I received had no inscription. It makes me think that the chest isn't apart of the Waterford line at all but rather a standard old chest. Now, mind you, there's nothing physically wrong with the chest. I just would have perferred the chest to have the Waterford symbol in it. I paid more for the "Waterford Set" thinking that the chest was Waterford as well. If I had known it wasn't, I could have saved myself about $50 and gone with just the Waterford flatware set from the Bowl Company for around $170.

Unica Flatware Collection "Daniel" 24-Piece Black-Handle, Vibro Finish Flatware Set plus Organizer,

Unica Flatware Collection 'Daniel' 24-Piece Black-Handle, Vibro Finish Flatware Set plus Organizer, Service for 6The item description says "soup spoons and teaspoons," which lead me to believe that the soup spoons would be really significantly large like soup spoons often are. The labeling on the set itself has them as "dinner spoons" which is much more accurate a description of the spoon size than "soup spoons" and the teaspoons are, surprisingly enough in this day and age of blown proportions, about teaspoon size. Well, maybe two teaspoons but still significantly smaller.

The set's classy enough and the included drawer organizer is pretty okay though you can probably find something better at any box store for cheap. If I could rate things with half stars, this would get 4.5, but since I can't, it gets rounded down. I'll probably buy another set at some point if only to replace the teeny spoons that have instantly doomed themselves to a life of being used to stir coffee...or being used as actual spoons when I want to feel like a giant...yeah.

These are very cheaply made and feel light. They are about 3/4 size when compared to normal utensils. I kind of knew this when I purchased them, I did so because I live alone and at my age Im not trying to impress anybody. but i suggest that if guality is necessary pay more and get what you want.

The best part of this knife block is the option of putting the knives I use all the time in a handy holder for quick access. This Kapoosh holder does that for me. I took my old knife block off the counter and put the items like the meat fork, cleaver, and larger knives that I use rarely in the drawer.

I was a little concerned that the holder would be small but was pleasantly pleased with the space for the knives I use.

I was then able to put all the knives I use in the Kapoosh and have room for more knives if I so desire to add the cleaver or others later.

i would recommend this knife block for those wanting to customize which knives to have on display for your kitchen cooking use and function. Happy cutting.

Kuhn Rikon Original Corn Zipper with 2-Tone Handle

Kuhn Rikon Original Corn Zipper with 2-Tone HandleI love the taste of fresh corn in salads and recipes, so I thought this corn zipper would really make the job of getting the kernels off the cob a little easier. Unfortunately it is just too awkward and is not as effective as the plain, old knife. This is just collecting dust along with other handy dandy tools I bought to make my tasks a little easier. Some work, but some, like this--just can't take the place of the things my mother taught me.

The corn zipper is limited to taking off only about 2 rows of corn. For me, it seems a little slow. I also find it awkward. However, your fingers are well protected.

Given that this knife is designed to cut hard cheeses, it seems to me to fail in two important ways: First, it isn't very sharp, and second, the cutting blade is thick.

Granted, it's inexpensive, but any sharp knife you have handy will do just as well.

I was looking for knives that would do the job and take abuse from the family. The price was right and these knives are working out quite nicely. An excellent bargain.

I was tired of using pointy dull cheapo steak knives that I must have had since college. But when I looked at most steak knife sets, they were pretentious or rosewood or garish. Rosewood will look nice at first but will not last long if permitted to soak or put in the dishwasher. And how is that not going to happen? It certainly wasn't in my house.

These knives, with their rounded tips and plastic but solid plastic handles, seemed different and I liked the difference. And once they arrived, it was only a few days before we decided to replace our regular butter knives, with their meager 'teeth', with these. They function just as well for spreading butter or dipping mayonnaise out of a jar, but when it comes time to actually cutting meat or poultry (not just steak!) on the plate, they perform better than plain old butter knives. I don't know how we did without these knives before, but we're definitely shoving the old cutlery knives to the back of the drawer.

These were a gift for my father-in-law and while I believe he likes the knives, the condition they came in were horrible. The knives came in two separate boxes that were taped together and the boxes were covered in dust like they were in someones garage for years and they just wanted to get rid of them. Also the plastic of the packaging was broken and shattered (and I know they were shipped like that because the box had bubble wrap in it). Also one of the knife handle had a crack in it. Luckily the knife didn't seem like it would break because of it so we just decided to keep it because returning it would be more a hassle. Needless to say we had to take the knives out of their packaging and put them in a zip lock bag (we didn't have anything else to use) to give to my father-in-law (that was my husband's idea anyway). Pretty embarrassing.
