Hamilton Beach 76606Z Smooth Touch Can Opener, Black and Chrome

Hamilton Beach 76606Z Smooth Touch Can Opener, Black and ChromeI used to have a green and white Krups Open Master that opened cans in a simailar way. It was thrown out during a kitchen remodel and was later discontinued. I never liked the replacement can openers because the dirty can lid and cutting blade would sink into the food and contaminate it and just make a mess.

I just received the Hamilton Beach can opener a few minutes ago, but this 76606 works as well or better than the old Krups so far.

I'm not sure why this isn't the way all can openers work. I don't see the point of can openers that work the old fashioned way.

The video speaks for itself.

I loved my Krups Open Master 404 until it stopped working recently. I found that The Krups, which had NO BLADE that touched the food so as to leave food on the blade as with most canopeners, is no longer made or avaialbe except on ebay. So, I started looking to see what is now available. I tried some other brands. These "other brands" had the typical "blade" that cut into the top of the can and the blade TOUCHED the food inside the can. Thus, food was left ON the blade. To me, after using the Krups for 7 years, this was/is VERY unsanitary---having part of the juice or syrup of the food left to dry out and collect germs on the blade. The only way to avoid having food left on the "cutting blade" of most canopeners is to wash the blade EVERY time you open a can. This isn't difficult, but it takes a minute or two which seems like a lot of effort when you're trying to fix a meal for yourself or your family. Enter the Hamilton Beach 76606. THIS ONE DOES NOT GET ANY FOOD ON ANY BLADE. In fact, I didn't SEE any blade on it that touches the food! So, it's as good, or almost as good, as my old Krups. Praise the Lord! :o) boland7214@aol.

This is undoubtably the best electric can opener ever made. It cuts the lid along the side of the can under the beaded lip. It does a perfect job,it is quiet, and does not leave any metal shavings. It will also cut the lids that have pull ring tabs. This saves your fingers. I give this opener a 5 star score.

Everything written about this can opener on this site is true except!

I bought the unit after a lot of research and all the positive reviews. And they were all true excellent unit,....until shortly after the one year warranty expired (isn't that always the way.) Went to open a can it whirred, spun around, did all the usual stuff except the can wasn't opened. After a lot of looking and examining, it appeared the piercer/cutter blade was missing apparently broken off (altho I never found any pieces.)

I called Hamilton Beach after checking, the lady said there " were no replaceable parts in the unit." So, I've got a paperweight. I asked her what brand she suggested I buy next time around she said "well, H-B of course." I told her all my previous can openers had lasted 20 years or more and I replaced them just because I got sick of them. I didn't think one year's service with no way to replace the cutter was acceptable, so, despite my admiration of the unit, I'd have to look elsewhere.

Using an estimate of cans opened and the purchase price, I calculate the cost to open each can came out to more than 10 cents/can!

I favored the results of my research prior to purchase. After receiving it, I was impressed with the size & weight. It's easy on the eyes and I like the way it operates. Since I use a lot less in the way of canned goods than most people I know, I didn't actually try it out for several days. Once I did, my reaction was "wow!". I do believe I have the best can opener *ever*. If this unit holds up well over a protracted period of time, I'll remain a 'happy camper'. Now, for the reason I only gave it 4 stars i/o 5. Upon opening perhaps the 3rd or 4th can, I noticed something *very* disturbing. As I removed the lid, I spotted a very thin strand of metal (about 1-1/4 inches long) jutting out from the top of the can (perpendicular from the body of the can).

Promply removing it, I could only think that had it fallen *into* the contents of the can I might have ingested it! To better illustrate, I *could* have proceeded to empty the contents into a bowl or saucepan and had that metal fall off in the process. Hopefully, this won't happen again....but....anyone buying this can opener *should* be aware of the possibility & be vigilant in it's use. At this time, I really think this *is* the best one on the market and I'm darned glad to have it. Hope this helps anyone considering the purchase.

MIU France Stainless Steel Fillet Knife, 8-Inch

MIU France Stainless Steel Fillet Knife, 8-InchThis is a handy knife considering the price, although it is not the sharpest fillet knife I have used. It is good for occasional filleting of large salmon that we get from Costco. It is long enough to get the job done. In addition, it is also great for slicing large watermelons.

I think that the word "France" is misleading. It is a Chinese brand and Chinese made. The quality is fine and the value is good.

I plan to grind the fillet knife to 6 and 1/2 inches to make the nife more adaquate for filleting fish. The current lenght 8 inches make the knife too flexable to be a good fillet knife. 6/12 to 7 inches in lenght would make the current 8 inch knife more stiff.

Farberware Pro Forged 5-Inch Chef's Knife, black handle

Farberware Pro Forged 5-Inch Chef's Knife, black handleI'm actually quite amazed at the quality of these "Pro Forged" knives from Farberware. I found the 8" version of the Chef knife on closeout in a discount store for $5, and got it just to have a beater knife to toss in the camping gear kitchen set. Now, I've got to admit that I'm something of a knife snob. My kitchen has a ridiculous number of knives including numerous examples from some of the finest German and Japanese manufacturers. I needed another chef knife like I need more clutter. But, this Chinese made cheap chef's knife sharpened up very well and seems to be made of a much higher quality steel than I've ever seen in a knife this cheap. The handle is big and squarish and it fits my large hands better than many of the pricier name-brand chef's knives in my collection. I'm very impressed.

This Farberware 5" chef's knife is just the right size and weight for general use in my kitchen. It retains it's sharp edge well and is easy to sharpen when it gets dull. It doesn't have the heft that a discontinued Farberware 5" chef's knife has, but is still one of a very few knives I reach for on a regular basis. The 5" length is long enough for most chopping jobs and not cumbersome like an 8" blade is. I'll probably buy another one as a gift!

I used five star Henckels for twenty years until my recent divorce. This is no Henckel, but it's sweet knife for the price. The balance isn't perfect, but it's pretty close. This is almost a real chef's knife for almost nothing. Not bad at all. An insane value for the price.

Farberware makes an outstanding "pro forged 6 inch chef's knife" with a sturdy black handle that's truly easy to hold onto; you never feel that you're going to accidentally let this knife slip out of your control. It just plain feels like it is well made and I hear from my friends that Farberware knives last practically forever.

This knife does indeed have a strong, full tang. It is quite sharp (be careful when handling this) and unlike another of the reviewers here I found it to be sharp enough for my uses on the very first try. Of course you can sharpen it if you want to make it even sharper; that's up to you. This knife makes it child's play to cut meat, skin off chicken (dietary restriction for me) and even small particles of fat within the meat of a steak or a piece of chicken so that you only get the meat--awesome!

I don't see why you couldn't wash this knife in a dishwasher; it certainly seems to be in every way dishwasher safe.

Overall, this is one low-maintenance extra sharp kitchen knife from Farberware and I highly recommend it. If you can, buy the knife on this website as the price I paid in a local store was three dollars more than the current advertised price!

Great job as usual, Farberware!

My husband and I received a set of Rada knives as a wedding gift over 20 years ago that are still going strong. We like our Rada knives so well that we have given many sets of these as gifts to friends and family over the years. They are always impressed with the quality of these knives as well and usually call us up wanting to know where they can get more of them. Rada knives sharpen easily and stay sharp longer that other knives. They are THE BEST knives we have ever owned, they are a great value, and best of all they are made in the good ole' US-of-A and come with a lifetime gaurantee. Once you have owned and used Rada knives you will find anything else to be subpar.

FYI from the maker's website Rada Cutlery is proudly manufactured in Waverly, Iowa. Rada Mfg. Co. has been making kitchen knives and utensils since 1948. Rada blades are hand sharpened for a razor sharp edge. They are made of surgical quality T420 high carbon stainless steel and hollow ground to ensure a precision concave surface for maximum edge retention. Lifetime Guarantee: "Rada Mfg. Co. will replace any product manufactured by our company returned to us due to defects in materials or workmanship."

Mikasa Duo 20-Piece Flatware Set

Mikasa Duo 20-Piece Flatware SetIt may be difficult to see in the stock photo, but the first half of the handle is a brushed stainless and the remainder is polished. This wouldn't be an issue if the brushed part wasn't so susceptible to scratches. Out of the box over half of the utensils were scratched and I hadn't even used them yet. In addition, the end corners of the handles are very sharp and borderline dangerous. I wouldn't recommend these if you have kids or depressed people living in the house.

These Mikasas will be going back and I'm splurging for the 8-piece Henckels set with serving utensils for only $35 more.

DCI Cheese Knives, Set of 4

DCI Cheese Knives, Set of 4I bought these because I thought they would be cool and a great way to remember which knife is for what cheese. The knives came and they looked horrible. The knives looked like they had been sharpened after they were painted which made them look awful. The printing on the actual knives was ugly, a lot of it was smudged. I rarely return things but I had to return this product. (The other reviews are correct, the packaging is really cheap so if this is a gift it will look like you got it from the dollar store.)

Ordered this cheese knife set for a gift to take to a Christmas party. It was delivered earlier than I expected and the knives were nice...the packaging was a little on the cheap side, but hey! it was a great deal!!

Shun Elite Ken Onion 8-Inch Chefs Knife

Shun Elite Ken Onion 8-Inch Chefs KnifeSo, I should start out by saying that I am career cook and have used many brands of knives over the years, even thinking that I had found the perfect knife many times over, but alas, I was mistaken. I had not found the perfect knife until I purchased the Shun Elite Ken Onion 8" Chef's Knife.

I can say without hesitation that it is a knife without peer in my humble opinion. The combination of its style, craftsmanship, endurance and simply fantastic ergonomics makes it my absolute go-to knife no matter if the knife was designed for the job or not (I find myself frustrated with having to use other knives!)

I know the secret to its everlasting sharpness is in the alloy they use to make the knife but I am not a metallurgist, only a cook, yet I can only imagine it must be some alloy from outer space because this knife hasn't lost its killer factory edge since the day I bought it about a year ago. I hone it on a standard steel, about 4 to 5 swipes on each edge at 16 degrees about twice a week, and I use it daily for at least 3 to four hours of continuous use. Still sharp as ever.

Because it looks so gorgeous, owners may be tempted only to bring it out for special occasions, or to inspire a little knife-envy amongst their friends or fellow cooks, but I have to say this knife begs to be used., and you should use it every chance you get. Its look and style communicates a serious statement about the respect for your craft or hobby and the ergonomics of Mr. Onion's design induce no fatigue or burn-out in your wrist or forearm. My hands are of a normal average size for a man and the grip on this knife is stellar. I imagine it's the closest one could get to having a knife custom molded to your hand.

The blade slides effortlessly in a gentle, controlled rhythm whether you're a novice or an experienced cook. As I mentioned, it is seriously sharp, but the sheer design of the knife acts as its own safety feature by preventing any unnecessary force to be put against the blade and aligning the hand to properly secure the knife. The balance between the blade and the handle is superb and the curve of the blade edge makes it perfect for slicing and chopping.

Sure it's a chunk of change, but I would have to say that if you had to only have one knife (and believe me, when you purchase this knife, you'll only need one knife) this would be it. It'll last a lifetime or more with good care and the lifetime warranty and sharpening service offered by Shun.

Do yourself a favor and purchase this knife. You won't regret it one bit.

First, I'm not a chef nor an expert by any means, just a guy who likes to cook. I

I purchased this knife because I wanted at least one knife with the SG2 or MC66 powdered steel blade. In case you are like me and don't know what 'powdered' steel is, has an article titled "Shun 101" that is a great basic steel and knife manufacture lesson. The part on powdered steel is near the end of the article. Having read other information about knife steel and hardness, I began looking for a powdered steel blade; it was rather difficult to find manufacturers of PSK(powdered steel knives) I found 2 that seemed best to me. The Shun Elite series with SG-2 PSteel and the Henckels Miyabi 7000MC with a core of MC66. I hate these differences because it makes me want one of both to compare them.

I chose the Ken Onion Elite 8"chef's knife with the SG-2 core between 2 layers of 410A stainless steel for corrosion resistance and protection. It costs about the same as the Miyabi 8" chef, but I liked the K O's looks and feel; I also tried handling one in a nearby cutlery store. Out of the box that knife is sharp! It costs a lot and seems sharper than a Henckels Twin Cuisine 8"chef. The Japanese knives are in general lighter and easier to handle for me than the European knives. The Shun blade angle is 16 degrees where the Miyabi's is 17 degrees. If you owned one of each of these, keeping the proper blade angle might be difficult with out one of the mechanical devices.

I'll report later to let you know what I think after I've used the Ken Onion Elite SG0418 for a while. But right now I'll agree with Mr. Harris that it's the one you want if you had to have only one knife.

Buy Shun Elite Ken Onion 8-Inch Chefs Knife Now

This is a perfect knife. It is elite in any category; beauty, balance, sharpness, hardness (how long the edge lasts). The bolster is contoured to more comfortably allow the pinch-grip, which is the correct way to hold a chef knife. That, along with the fact that it is ambidextrous, so impressed my left-handed chef father, that he immediately purchased himself the Ken Onion Elite (next model up, now discontinued). Only hone with a Shun steel, because its bolster has a built-in angle guide. Trying to eye-ball the proper angle without the guide is very difficult, so instead of honing your blade, you could be twisting it. However, this knife is forged from very hard steel, so if used on proper boards, and for the proper jobs, it should stay razor sharp for at least a year without honing, and then simply be sharpened (about $1 per inch at such stores as Sur La Table). That would save you the $40 on honing steel. Be aware that 8 inches is easier to handle than 10, but can be too short for breaking down large fruits/vegetables, cuts of meat. This is not the knife for all jobs, but it will be the workhorse of your kitchen.

The sharpest knife I ever had. I am not a professional chef, but I enjoy cocking. This knife blows the Global knife out of the way (the only other really good knife I ever had). I saw other remarks that the knife is tuff to work an 8-10 hour day with, but like I said I am not a professional so I can't judge that. Best knife.

Want Shun Elite Ken Onion 8-Inch Chefs Knife Discount?

This is an excellent quality knife with great design. It's easy to use, the blade and angles of the handle make it comfortable for using the whole length of the blade and it cuts superbly. The 8inch length of knife is a particularly good size for smaller chef, the larger version would be been too heavy and hard to handle for me.

P-38 Can Opener

P-38 Can Openerso maybe it's just me. maybe the cans i am trying to open (like any normal can i have every purchased at the grocery store) are just to thick. i cannot get the tip to punch in and in the process, i watch the hinge take the strain. the more i try, the more i am certain i will injure myself long before i get a can open.

in a nutshell, i am not military. i have not been trained on how to use this thing. i can't make it work.

ACTUALLY I THINK THIS IS A P 51 CAN OPENER. Nuthin wrong with THAT. Both US Army issue and both work.

This is a bit bigger than the P38 with two stiffening groves and has the lanyard hole in the other end. Somebody

[ maybe me ] should do a comparison road test. I recommend this can opener.

And WHY does the Army name their can openers after famous WW II fighter planes ?

P38 Lightning and the P51 Mustang.

Excalibur 9 Tray Large Food dehydrator with 26 hour Timer + Preserve It Naturally Book + Paraflexx

Excalibur 9 Tray Large Food dehydrator with 26 hour Timer + Preserve It Naturally Book + Paraflexx Premium Reusable Sheet 14X14 + Knife Set 7PC with Pine Block + Bamboo Toast Tong - 6.5 Inch LongFirst of all, let me say that I love this Excalibur dehydrator. I use it all the time because I am a Raw Food Vegan and this has been such a great product. 5 stars for this dehydrator. I love the fact it has a timer and how easy it is to use. However, I recommend buying the dehydrator by itself and ordering the Paraflexx nonstick sheets separately. The knives that came with this item are cheap and very dull, and note that you are only getting ONE Paraflexx sheet for the 9 trays in the dehydrator. When I bought this, the title said sheets, so I thought I was getting 9 sheets. When it came with only one, I contacted the seller and discovered that only one came with it. I was upset that I had spent the extra money to get things I didn't need when I could have used it to buy all 9 Paraflexx sheets. Thankfully, the seller was helpful and sent me 4 more sheets because of the misunderstanding, so at least I have 5 nonstick sheets.

Anyway, overall this deal isn't worth it. I strongly suggest you buy this dehydrator along with the sheets separately. Don't waste your money on this deal. 5 Stars for the Excalibur 3926TW Dehydrator though.

Victorinox Swiss Army Fillet Knife with Pouch

Victorinox 59216 8-Inch Swiss Army Fillet Knife with PouchWith Costco here in Seattle currently selling twitchy-fresh Alaskan Sockeye fillets for $9/lb and whole fish for $5/lb, this Scotsman decided he needed a long filleting knife. At the knife shop, the best one I was shown was this Global, but I couldn't bring myself to spend that much, and I dislike the Global handles, especially when wet as would happen while filleting.

So instead, for chump change I got this excellent knife with a far superior handle. A short detour to Youtube for salmon filleting videos (recommended: the hilariously-unhygienic one that has chickens wandering all over the filleting table) and I was in production, with the freezer and the stockpot quickly filling up. I figure that with the Global's extra flexibility, I could get about 5% more meat off the bones, but none of it is going to waste, so I don't mind. A shorter knife wouldn't work nearly as well.

Next up: the same store is selling whole NZ lamb for $3/lb...

(Note: Every decent cookbook I've ever read says salmon carcasses make dreadful fumet. That's simply not true: salmon fumet is an excellent base for robust dishes like a Malaysian rendang made with unsubtle fish like mackerel or blues.)

A very well balanced blade. Though it hasn't been officially tested under fire, from experience the handle aught to offer a good grip even when the hands get gooie with fish slime. Lets go fishing.

Citrus Knife and Peeler

Citrus Knife and PeelerI always used a similar item growing up but never owned one since out on my own. I found this one online and ordered it about six months ago. I was surprised how thin the cutting edge was, but it seemed to work for a few oranges. Didn't use it for many months since no oranges bought. Pulled it out the other day to use on a clementine and the cutting edge snapped off immediately. Broken after only a few uses! Highly disappointed. Sad since I really liked the translucent color options. I think I will continue my search and try one of the uglier, but hopefully more sturdy, designs since this one was useless.

I have one of these and couldn't remember where I got it. I wanted another and everyone that sees me use it wants one too. I have been searching high and low and just found this. I am thrilled! This is the best citrus peeler I have ever used especially for the price. (I have never tried the ones that cost $50.00 since they are too pricey for me.) Well worth the money. I am buying several. Great for a stocking stuffer or token gift for anyone that will definitely be used and appreciated as well. It's the best. Give a try. You won't regret it.
