Shun DMS0910 Classic 9-Piece Block Set

Shun DMS0910 Classic 9-Piece Block SetThese Shun knives are really great for the kitchen and I have been using this set for years now (the verified purchase is for knives I have bought for others). I was introduced to them by a chef who will use nothing else and from that time I have been hooked! I have introduced these knives to four other people who now use nothing else as well. The reasons I like these knives are as follows:

Ease of cutting the Shun range has quite thin blades, allowing an easier cut. Add to that the extremely sharp edge you can get and these make easy work of most tasks.

Comfort I am quite a large guy (6'5", 230lb) and was initially worried the knives would be too small or light. Happily, this is not the case and I find them easy to use, with great balance.

Edge retention I will caveat this by saying you need to use the honing steel regularly or you will not see the results.

Quality I have had no issues with the knives for the four years I have used them. Despite losing the new shine, they still look fantastic and have not gained a 'battered' look prevalent in cheaper knives.

Aesthetics as mentioned above, these knives look great; not a deal breaker, but a nice to have!

I upgraded from Global to get these knives and can tell you that though the Global's are good, the Shun knives are far superior. They feel more solid, cut better, retain an edge far more efficiently and are, in my opinion, better looking. Do yourself a favour and buy this Shun knife set along with Shun DM0718 Classic 7-Inch Santoku Hollow Ground Knife and you will have a very good start to the collection (the only other expansion I have found a need for is a Shun Ken Onion 7-Inch Cleaver as I have a need to cleave meat).

Also, retain your other knives in the kitchen draw. Often, you will have use for knives that involves potentially damaging the cutting edge. Old knives are perfect for that, Shun knives are not!

I love these knives. Love them. They are sharp as sharp can be. They are also quite lovely looking.

Although my review is and remains 5 stars regardless, i do offer these caveats:

The cutouts in the block are a bit big for most of the knives, giving them a tendency to be kind of wobbly in the block and not line up perfectly. This is nit picky beyond belief i know, but it is worth mentioning because it drives me 1% crazy.

Additionally, the packaging for shipping though extensive and seemingly excellent is not enough to contain the sharpness of these knives. Even after reading other reviews of people who cut themselves unpacking the knives and therefore being super super attentive as i unpacked my knives i STILL managed to slice the heck out of my thumb (the bread knife had just barely cut its way through the cardboard sheath it was packed in and i did not see it as i removed the bubble wrap around the cardboard).

This is a great way to start or fill out a collection of Shun knives. They are extremely sharp, durable, and attractive. Beware that Shun no longer provides free sharpening and some places charge more to sharpen Asian style knives and the nonstandard angle.

I purchased these because my hard working wife was complaining about the full set of Wustofs I had previously given her. They could not hold an edge the way she wanted. A dull knife really bothers her, so I thought I would try these Shun Classics. They are much, much more beautiful knives. They truly are a work of art. The VG10 (Rockwell 60-61) Damascus steel is an absolutely beautiful thing to behold every time the knives are removed from the bamboo block. This set is like knife jewelry, REALLY! Sharp? I haven't heard her complain one time. She hasn't told me this, but I know that they make her work feel valued. She deserves to feel that way, she is a talented cook and a priceless wife.

No matter how many times I told her that I loved her it didn't make those Wustofs sharp (yes, I sharpened them too). The Wustofs have been demoted to the downstairs kitchen. The Shun knives are a lifetime purchase of the highest quality chef set. Shun has free sharpening for life so when to do need it these works of knife art will be sharpened by a master craftsperson.

Wusthof Classic Ikon Hollow-Edge Santoku

Wusthof Classic Ikon Hollow-Edge Santoku: 7'This is my 2nd Wusthof purchase and won't be my last, very sharp, great grip, have tried Shun, Global, etc and keep coming back to the Wusthof Classic Ikon.

Great balance. No hassle in cutting and chopping. Held it's edge and cut many items during the holiday meals. Everybody should get one.

Buy Wusthof Classic Ikon Hollow-Edge Santoku Now

This is my first Wusthof purchase. I currently own a Henckels knife set and wanted to add the 7" Santoku Chef knife to my collection for a new twist. The Wusthof Ikon Classic Santoku has an incredibly sharp edge, cutting through soft tomatoes with little effort was a joy. I nicked and cut myself without even knowing because the blade was so sharp. I love the ergonomic way the Santoku handle feels in my hand, the knife is very balanced. I haven't been able to rock this knife the same way like my classic edge knives, so this knife definitely cuts differently. The hollow edge is supposed to keep food from sticking to the blade while making cutting easier, it made cutting seem easier, not so sure about food not sticking to blade. Sadly after about 3 weeks of cutting on a wooden cutting board it had already lost some of it's razor sharp edge and will need sharpening. Wasn't expecting this to happen so quickly, but I use it several times per day. I'm planning on adding the regular Hollow Edge Ikon Classic 6" Chef Knife & 3.5" Paring knife to my growing Wusthof collection (Merry Christmas to me!)and eventually phasing out my tired Henckels for the new Hollow Edge tech. All in all, I'm converting.

Victorinox Cutlery 7-Inch Fillet Knife, Small Black Poly Handle

Victorinox Cutlery 7-Inch Fillet Knife, Small Black Poly HandleI swear by Victorinox(Forshner) knives and own well over a dozen, from fillet to chef's knives. I have found they are the best knife for the price both in the kitchen and at the fillet table. They not only feel right but also hold an edge even when cutting thru bones. I would rate most of them a five. That said though, I feel this one though is too wimpy for filleting most fish and I base this on my experience as I fillet hundreds of fish a year both in Michigan and Florida. The knife seems to bend too much when I apply a small amount of force to feel and ride on the bones as I remove the fillets from the fish. It does do a good job of skinning the fish though.

Great knife! Sharp, flexible, and processes fish with the greatest of ease.... but didn't come with a sheath, I assumed it would as a fillet knifeso if your out there and (like me) don't read the details... don't be surprised...

Bambu Cork Taper Cutting Board

Bambu Large 14-Inch L by 10-Inch W Cork Taper Cutting Board, NaturalI wanted a food safe, yet sustainably manufactured alternative to the plastic cutting boards that I have used for years. In researching options, I came across this cork cutting board. I confirmed with the manufacturer (Bambu) that they don't use adhesives or glues in the construction of these boards (they're molded with heat & pressure). This appealed to me a lot, so I decided to buy one and give it a try. I couldn't be happier with my purchase. It's easy on my knives, very easy to clean, and so far has been remarkably durable. I use it to chop and slice all manner of fruits and vegetables. I thought I would miss not being able to put the cutting board into the dishwasher, but I do not. The only caveat is that you absolutely cannot use a serrated knife on this cutting board. As long as you avoid this, I think that you'll be very satisfied with your purchase.

The small cutting board is about the size of a medium paperback book (one by say Christopher Moore), while the medium size one is a bit larger than your standard printer paper. The board quality is high with the innate cork quality of cushioning, which I find as a rather comfortable attribute. I don't know if it actually helps your knife blade remain sharper for longer (as stated by the manufacturer), but it does feel good while your chopping and dicing. They clean easily and dry fast, without lingering smells or cut lines into the flesh of the board, as you find in plastic boards.

Buy Bambu Cork Taper Cutting Board Now

Very good cutting surface; however, please be very careful that what you get is a board that is pretty much going to be used only on one side at a much smaller dimension than one might think unless you consider carefully what a Tapered Cutting board is:

Although it CAN be used on both, it has a radiused edge on one side which makes the board more stable but the effective cutting surface dimension lessens by about 1" smaller on each side. After measuring other boards for what I needed, the 8x12 seemed plenty big relative to regular square cut edged cutting boards, but this doesn't get used as often as it might as it is actually only about 6x10, which means it's too small for chopping most things. Also, the radius edge makes the food more likely to 'fall off'.

This is a good size for chopping 3 cloves of garlic or cutting open a fruit for a bar drink, but not for chopping a small onion or slicing a big carrot. I'd buy the bigger one for the 'medium' use I think

This is without a doubt the best cutting board I've ever owned. Actually, I own the small one, which I bought at a local co-op, and that's why I'm here now, buying the large one. So easy to clean, non-slip, easy to cut on, environmentally friendly, and even when I cut beets, they don't leave behind a stain. So happy I discovered these cork cutting boards!

Want Bambu Cork Taper Cutting Board Discount?

I wanted to find a BPA free cutting board and decided to try this one. I've had a lot of cutting boards in the past and none of them worked out for a variety of reasons. This one is great! I like the size for smaller chopping tasks. It's a great addition if you have a larger board which can be burdensome to pull out for smaller jobs. Bambu is a great company and makes wonderful eco friendly products.

Slitzer 8pc Professional German Style Jumbo Steak Knives

Slitzer 8pc Professional German Style Jumbo Steak KnivesI bought these knives as extras for when I have people over for a BBQ. The serrations are very large, the blades are dull and just tear the meat rather than cut it. For the price they work with some extra effort and as basically throwaways they meet the need, but if I was looking for day to day steak knives I would have sent these back.

As other reviewers have noted, these are large German-style steak knifes. The handles and blade are about 2x as wide as a typical steak knifes and about 1/8th longer; the blade thickness is the same as a typical steak knife but the handle is about 1/3 thicker I still find them comfortable to hold even though I have very small hands, but I would think these would be too big for most kids under 12. They have nice, smooth contoured black wooden handles with full tang blades with 3 rivets. The blades are stamped stainless and look and feel like good quality high-carbon stainless steel, which is what it also says on the box they came in. The curved portion of the blade is serrated from 1/2 inch below the point through the curve of the blade and the rest is just a straight edge (except there is about one-third inch of the bottom of the blade with no edge, which is typical on most steak knives I believe this is a safety feature so you don't cut yourself if you grip the handle too high). These were a little dull out of the box, but sharpened easily and seem to hold an edge well. I've had them about a month and so far I like them a lot they are surprisingly comfortable to hold and use, cut decently, wash easily, look great and seem to be wearing well. I've had guests over a few times and used these the size got smiles and laughs every time, followed by exclamations on the nice quality, how comfortable and easy to use they are and where did I get them, lol. So if you want a bigger, more substantial steak knife, these are a good choice. The only caveat is since they are only half-serrated, you need to keep them sharp so they will cut well, which is why I removed one star have to admit I'd like them even better if the blades were serrated along their entire length.

Want Slitzer 8pc Professional German Style Jumbo Steak Knives Discount?

Others have written how good these knives are. Presumably one of three things happened in that case. 1: I did not get the same knives they did, 2: they got good versions of the junk I got, or 3: They were not honest about their comments. I do not know which it would be, but I can state, categorically, that these knives are pure junk. Not sharp, rip meat, loose handles that allow matter to seep under them, and leak water after the knife is dried. Two handles really bad, with cracks round the rivet and rough edges.

If you receive the same knives I did, you will be truly sorry, even if they were inexpensive.

New Thick Stainless Steel Grapefruit Spoon, Dessert Spoon, Serrated Edge, Set of 6

New Thick Stainless Steel Grapefruit Spoon, Dessert Spoon, Serrated Edge, Set of 6High quality spoons nice heavy steel with good edges. Low price relative to other steel spoons. They work great on my morning grapefruit I couldn't be happier. Arrived within a day after my order shipping was great.

These spoons are great quality for the price. They came each individually wrapped, and are a little more modern looking than most. The serrated part of the spoon extends farther up on the sides of the spoon than most other grapefruit spoons, and because of that they work really well. They are a little light weight, though.

The quality of the spoons is horrible. They really feel like those you get at 4/1$ at the dollar store. The edges are randomly serrated and they feel like they are going to bend when trying to tear some grapefruit fibers. They are NOT thick at all.

COOK WORKS Stainless Steel Pizza Cutter - 11" Rocker Style

COOK WORKS Stainless Steel Pizza Cutter - 11' Rocker StyleGot it right on schedule, maybe a little early, but I unwrapped it gave it a quick wash and put it right to work slicing up some bread. Works great on Pizza doesn't drag the cheese or toppings like roller pizza slicers. I also used it to chop up some veggies. Worked great. The only down side is that it is only 12" so probably won't work great for delivery pizza, but that is presliced anyway so maybe it will work to do a quick re-slice. Very happy with the purchase and the price!

We have homemade pizza almost every Friday night both Sicilian and thin crust and I always cut with a large serrated knife which is usually a challenge. This pizza cutter changed that and now cutting is a cinch, even with the Sicilian pizza which is thicker. I thought that the blade was going to be very sharp and dangerous, but it was not yet despite that cutting was a breeze. Even my 9 year old son was able to use it with supervision. I would highly recommend this pizza cutter!

This is a small inexpensive rocker type pizza cutter. It feels very well made in the hand.. not heavy but heavy enough. I use it to slice the thin crust pizzas I make in my brick oven. I rarely make pizza bigger than 11"-12" so this is a perfect compact tool for the pizza drawer. It is not sharp, but you could sharpen it if you wanted to. My kids use this as well so having a razor sharp 11" pizza cuter is not something I want. Just use a little elbow grease and it cuts the pizzas perfectly. The round grip is also centered over the blade (not offset like others I've seen)which allows you to deliver the maximum cutting force from you efforts.

Cuisinox Stainless Steel Water Pitcher in Satin Finish - 2.1 Quart

Cuisinox Stainless Steel Water Pitcher in Satin Finish - 2.1 QuartI got this pitcher because I often use one to serve beverages for dinners with company. My sons in law both commented that it poured a nice stream that didn't come back and wash down the side. It does seem to make a nice, even stream which does not dribble. I especially like that the pitcher is metal and therefore cannot break. The metal also has a buffed finish that does not show finger prints. I use it for juices in the morning, water, iced tea with dinner...you name it! Great pitcher!

Glass breaks, but metal rusts. Due to the thinness of the metal in this pitcher and the spot welding I can see this pitcher rusting sooner rather than later which is disappointing. Maybe it won't. The handle is hollow, not solid.

Other than that, the pitcher has good balance when filled: it won't topple over and it is easy to pour. The ice guard is handy if you want one but the pouring hole is smaller than I would like so you can't quite pour drinks quickly like a battle-tested trucker diner waitress but more leisurely like a country-club gentleman in waiting.

Metal pitchers are great for cooling down hot drinks...you dip them in cold water and the conduction rapidly cools off the liquid and you don't have to worry about shattered glass in your mint-julip. I wish it wasn't so expensive, I would give it 5 stars even with the thin metal.

The pitcher is not the quality I was expecting. I needed a handsome stainless pitcher to use for BBQs on the patio as well as serving at the dining room table. By looking at the photo, it appeared to have all the qualities I was wanting. However upon opening the box, the pitcher is light weight and more troubling, the ice guard is nearly flat and with the small hole for the liquid to pour from, it is a normal reflex to tip the pitcher more which allows the liquid to pour over the ice guard (not good). In addition to the ice guard being nearly flat, unlike the photo shows, the guard is attached to the pitcher a little off center and the weld is not complete around the guard to the edge of the pitcher. Very disappointing, but I needed to use it so did not have enough time to return it and look for another. Disappointing, at best.

Shun Premier Essential 7-Piece Block Set

Shun Premier Essential 7-Piece Block SetYou could spend more for knives but few people would ever need anything better than these. They're super sharp, beautifully made and perfectly balanced. I'll enjoy these knives for the rest of my life, I'm sure.

This set of kitchen knives are truly in a league of their own. After having tried a multitude of Western and traditional Japanese knives, this is without a doubt, the MUST have addition to any kitchen. This adds a whole new dimension to cooking. With the right care and use, these knives are sure to last a lifetime. The blades on each knive cut effortlessly through any food item. Trust me, I have put the knives through their paces! Even surprised with the bread knife not a crumb is dropped slicing through it. I would challenge any review that has any fault with these knives. Even the price. You pay for what you get, and that is, an unrivalled kitchen utensil.

Buy Shun Premier Essential 7-Piece Block Set Now

I have been using this knife set for a little over a year now. I purchased these to treat myself to a truly nice set of knives after years of using an "ok" set of knives. I almost always prize function over form when making purchases, but these knives are so attractive that I allowed myself to choose this set based primarily on looks. And I have not been dissapointed in that regard. After a full year of moderate use, they still look spectacular. These are beautiful knives. The chef's knife and the bread knife are the stars of this set. They are nearly perfect. The are both extremely sharp, well balanced, and comfortable in hand. The kitchen shears are also fantastic. They are very heavy-duty, very sharp, and the separable halves make clean-up a snap. However, these knives are not perfect and I do suffer from a bit of buyer's remorse. The blades on these knives are very, very thin. This is good for ease of cutting, but on the medium size knives (like the utility knife), I find the blades a little too flexible at the tip. I have bent the tip out of true on a few occasions. On the medium and smaller size knives, I find the handles a little too small for my hand (I'm an average size adult male). I also find it odd that the paring knife is shaped like a miniature chef's knife. It is good for small chopping tasks, but this limits its maneuaverability in delicate tasks.

Best Features:

-Beautiful knives with both Damascus steel and hammered finishes

-Pakka wood (resin-infused real wood) handles combine the natural look of wood with the easy maintenance of plastic and are more durable than either material alone

-Razor sharp blades ... so sharp that those who only cook occasionally may find them intimidating (like my wife, who does find them intimidating)

-Good edge retention

-Easy to maintain/hone edges (note that the 16-degree angle is different than typical western knives)

-Outstanding craftsmanship

-Very durable if properly cared for

Drawbacks:

-The blades on the medium sized knifes are too thin

-The handles on the small and medium knives are too small for my hand

-The miniature chef's knife shape of the paring knife limits it's usefulness

-Knife block doesn't seem to be designed for this set of knives

-Kitchen shears don't match the rest of the set (they are standard Shun)

-Expensive

Summary:

This is a very good knife set, full of beautiful knives. They are razor sharp and perform chopping/slicing tasks very well. I wanted to love them. But, there are enough drawbacks that I would probably make a different choice if buying again.

Read Best Reviews of Shun Premier Essential 7-Piece Block Set Here

Pros:

Extremely Sharp (obviously)

Great craftsmanship (except... read below)

Beautiful knives (not as dark toned as the photos)

Good ergonomics

Wood block is heavy, sturdy, and aesthetic

Shears are fantastic and are separable for easy washing

Cons:

Shipped the chef knife with 2 obvious chips in it. I was planning to return it, but my girlfriend had already used and washed the knife, so I shrugged it off. After some extensive use (despite frequent honing), the chips are creating small snags in the blade which can only be made so right by honing. I will need to sharpen soon after 1 month of ownership.

The utility knife shipped with a bend in the tip, and a large scratch on the metal inlay. The bend was easily fixed, but nothing I can do about the inlay.

Recommendation:

I highly recommend this set for people that don't mind a little maintenance for a sharp blade.

I do not recommend these knives for households with touchy feely children.

I invested in a nice bamboo block and bamboo oil, I recommend owners do the same. I also recommend getting a few cheap knives for brute force, inedible materials and any harder materials one might use a knife for. Hone frequently.

For those of you who are a bit hesitant to own a sharp set of knives, I found one of the best features of this knife is that the sharpness gives you time to respect it. The blade cuts so easily and quickly, you can take your time with whatever you're cutting, and still cut faster than the average knife. Work slow. It will still cut fast and give you more comfort with the blades.

ONLY hand-wash these knives with a gentle citrus free soap.

These are first class blades. They are thinner than US/European blades I have used and this makes them more maneuverable. Thin slicing a tomato or onion is a breeze. Although the blades are thinner, the knives have plenty of heft are a extremely well balanced. Handles fit hands near perfectly. The photos here do give an idea of the beauty of these knives, but they are even nicer up close. The only drawback I see is that there are limited types of knives available in the "Premier" style.

Wusthof Classic Wave, Black

Wusthof Classic Wave, BlackI have a pretty good selection of Wusthof Classic knives in my collection. What makes this different is that it is a little heavier in weight and duty. It can take on tasks that my other knives would stuggle with. It's relatively expensive but worth the money in my opinion. Great addition.

I bought this knife for my husband who was tired of our useless knives. It works wonderfully. He found it very easy to cut carrots up in very very fine pieces. The handle is very easy to grip and control.

Chicago Cutlery Walnut Tradition 8-Inch Slicing/Carver Knife

Chicago Cutlery Walnut Tradition 8-Inch Slicing/Carver KnifeI have owned several Chicago Cutlery items for years and wanted to add to my set. This is an excellent carving knife and the wooden handle gives it classy look. I would recommend this knife to everyone.

What a steal! This knife is great. I use it mainly to carve/slice meat. I really like how the front of the blade is curved up to a point rather that just a straight point. It makes all the difference. The knife is extremely sharp right out of the package. Occasional sharpening (4 times a yr maybe) will keep it sharp for decades! My parents got one as a wedding present (approx 30 yrs ago!) and it is still going strong! They changed the handle and blade very very very slightly since the original one my parents got back in the day. The handle is a little less wide and the blade looks slightly different but it is barely noticeable even w/them side by side. I also have a J.A. Henckels 8-inch carving knife and I never use it. It costs way more than this but I do not see the value in the Henckels knife...I always choose the Chicago Cutlery one over it because it works much better and is easier to use. You will not be disappointed!

I have several brand name knives and this is the second one from Chicago Cutlery. The ones from Chicago I go to first and the others basically stay in the rack. This one does a beautiful job on slicing meat of all kinds.

You see, I went and broke my girlfriend's best knife. It was her 8-inch Chicago Cutlery slicing/carving knife. I was quite pleasantly surprised that I could replace it for such a low price. So now my sweetie is happy, and I'm thinking of getting one of my own. It slices bread better than my own supposed bread knife.

Nice knife, not the most beautiful I've ever seen, but nice enough. The thing I like about this knife is that I can put an edge on it in a second, and running the steel on it keeps it sweet. Unless you want to spend big bucks for a work of art knife, I'd get this one
