Le Creuset Stoneware Oval Serving Platter

Le Creuset Stoneware 16' Oval Serving Platter, MarseilleThe Le Creuset platter is beautiful and will provide a stunning culinary display; however, it is much smaller than I expected it to be.

I envisioned a large, heavy platter, since one set of measurements quoted it to be 16-1/2 by 14".

Unfortunately, instead of it being 14" wide, it is 11" wide. (Not 16-1/2 by 11 inches.)

I've measured every way, but I can't come up with their 14" width. Why do they provide two sets of measurements? Are they measuring the shipping box? Strange.

I previously read where someone placed a turkey on their platter. No way, this is way too small for that! Maybe cut-up turkey slices, but not a 12-pound turkey.

All in all, the Caribbean blue is gorgeous and the platter's high-gloss finish is silky smooth; however, I feel it is overpriced for its diminutive size.

I bought this platter six months ago and use it at least once a week. It's perfect for arranging appetizers that need to be heated in the oven. The literature reads 'microwave safe', but it is a tad too big for my microwave oven. And about the size, I agree, a turkey would seem disproportionate. Where they get the 14" measurement is indeed a mystery. It is 16 X 11, with the actual serving area being 12 X 7.5 inches, maybe sufficient for a roasted capon or a duck. This is a very attractive, versatile serving piece also durable. I would like one in every color!

The platter is gorgeous. It's not large enough for a huge turkey, but you're not supposed to purchase one that is over ten pounds anyway. Substantial piece. Le Creuset stoneware is top notch. For all the people complaining that it is made in China, so what. It may be made there but it is under the tight quality control that Le Creuset demands. I'd purchase again.

Although the first two platters were delivered damaged, Amazon made it super simple to return the item and the third time, alleluia, this beautiful platter arrived in one piece. We had originally ordered it for Thanksgiving but with the two previous contre-temps, it didn't happen so we'll be happy to use it for Christmas dinner. As with most Le Creuset product, quality is second to none. Very happy with our purchase.

We bought two, and these are the best knives for spreading sandwiches, bread, bagels, or muffins. The serrated edge is great for slicing after you've spread it with whatever. Unlike a wooden handle, this is long-wearing and easier to clean. Love the knives and almost wish I'd order another in case one of these is lost!

This is a classic institutional grade sandwich spreader with an ambidextrous grip and quite a nice serrated blade for cutting. It is dishwasher safe and should last just about forever in the home environment. I used this exact knife in the kitchen of a restaurant I worked at for years. I was hoping I would run across it somewhere and leave it to Amazon to carry it. A great knife at a great price. Durable and very utilitarian.

Felix Platinum Starterset, 3-Piece

Felix Platinum Starterset, 3-PieceI received a couple of Felix knives about 35 years ago when my parents went to Germany. They have been a mainstay in the kitchen ever since. I bought this set for my daughter and I was envious when they arrived. They are of incredible quality. They have great balance. They are sharp beyond belief. I have mine professionally sharpened about once every 7 years and use steel in between. If hers hold half the edge mine have, I am sure she will be using hers 35 years from now.

Ontario Knife 7065 4-Inch Paring Knife

Ontario Knife 7065 4-Inch Paring KnifeThis is many times better better than every other knife in my kitchen drawer, and didn't cost more than any one of them.

I bought the Old Hickory after a minor epiphany. It began when I was trying to sharpen a paring knife that I use all the time in spite of the fact that it's almost dull to the point of uselessness. It's a Chicago Cutlery knife which is made from some mysterious stainless steel, and needless to say I was just ripping minute chunks out of the blade without really improving the edge a bit. It occurred to me all at once that I would never tolerate such poor quality in a camping or hunting knife, but I have never questioned the overt lousiness of my kitchen knives.

Part of the reason for that is that I see no need to spend a ton of cash on something for chopping vegetables and cutting sandwiches. I looked around, and saw that the Ontario Old hickory knives were pretty cheap, and made from 1095 carbon steel. I had used that steel extensively in the field, and knew it would take both a harsh beating and an razor's edge, so I figured I'd give one a try. When I got the Old Hickory, I spent a few minutes on it with an Arkansas stone, and sure enough I was cutting paper with it in no time. For kicks, I tried that with the Chicago cutlery, and it just tore the sheet. You can see the results in my customer image.

Nothing is perfect. Old Hickory knives look awful. They won't be shiny like stainless unless you polish them all the time (and you shouldn't do that). They will rust if you don't wash and dry them after you use them. You will have to touch up the edge once in a while, and the handles are uncomfortable.

On the other hand, the cheapest knife in my drawer is now razor sharp. When it gets a little dull, I'll run it across a stone a few times and be good to go. Now that my expectations have been met by this unassuming paring knife, I think I'll buy a full set of Old Hickories, pitch out my other knives, and call it good.

I got this knife, along with a couple of other Old Hickory knives, about ten years ago and have kept it with me ever since. It is a great knife and it sharpens quickly and holds an edge very well. These were the first knives I owned that had high-carbon steel blades. This kind of steel is harder than stainless steel, will hold a sharp edge longer, and costs much less than most stainless knives of equal quality.

But high-carbon steel has one big drawback-it rusts in water. These knives will also stain and discolor with over time due to use and cumulative exposure to acidic foods (like tomatoes or oranges). The discoloration is harmless, the rust is not (tetanus concerns).

So, Rule #1 when caring for these knives is: DO NOT PUT THEM IN THE DISHWASHER! THEY WILL RUST!

My wife has put these knives into the dishwasher a couple of times by mistake and the blades were orange when I fished them out. Trust me: It is not fun to scrub the blades of sharp knives with steel wool to get the rust off of them.

To properly care for these knives, hand wash them with soap and warm water as soon as you can after slicing and cutting, always being mindful of the very sharp edge. Dry the blade thoroughly and put a very thin film of cooking oil on the blade with a paper towel. This will help to minimize rust and staining. A good way to remember this look at the handle of the knives:

Wooden Handle = Wash by Hand.

If you care for it properly, this knife will reward you handsomely with a lifetime of slicing, chopping and cutting at a minimum of sharpening and out-of-pocket cost. Those are the reasons why I love these knives.

If, however, you just want some knives that you can throw into the dishwasher when they get dirty and have them come out clean, this is NOT the brand of knives for you. Go spend your money on a set of premium-quality stainless steel knives. They will be much more expensive and will not hold an edge as well as these, but they are easier to care for and you won't worry so much about keeping current on your tetanus shots.

Top Chef by Master Cutlery 9-Piece Knife Set

Top Chef by Master Cutlery 9-Piece Knife SetI subscribed to the Top Chef University and noticed that all the chefs were using this cutlery. I checked Amazon, and found them at a very reasonable price.

I currently have a set of German knives with a Chef's knife that is more expensive than this entire set. So, my purchase was not a necessity, but more of a curiosity as to the quality of knives that carried the name of this TV series. Over the last month, I have been happily using these knives and they are great. For me, they are well balanced and easy to keep extremely sharp with the brief use of the sharpening steel before use. They are just delightful to use.

The shears work fine but I kept my other pair because these cannot be disassembled for cleaning. This is not a negative but my preference.

Besides a knife block, the following equipment is provided.

6'' filet knife

8'' chef knife

I contemplated purchasing a professional grade knife set for around $1,000 from Williams Sonoma (Michel Bras), thinking that it would make me a better cook, but I decided to try these first, and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. The first thing that impressed me that the handles were not wooden and they were very very sturdy. It has that welded metallic feel to it. The knives at relatively heavy and the sharpener is AMAZING! I sharpened all those suckers in a few minutes and everyone was as sharp as they can be. Each knife cut through my veggies and meat like butter and was still sharp after. I got this set along with my Catskill Craftsmen Wood End Grain Cutting Slab which is good for keeping your knives sharp and "healthy." Do not use these knives on plastic, glass or composite cutting boards. Invest in a good block and you will have many good years out of these. I have spent money on 1 chef knife equivalent to the price of this entire block and have had the same, maybe even better cutting experience with these knives. Just remember that you need to wash these knives right after you cook and wipe them dry so that they can do their job well. Do not put in the dishwasher and do not leave in the sink to soak or with other dishes.

I like to own a good set of cutlery for my new kitchen. I reviewed several popular brands and bought two before I saw this set. Then I bought this set and left other two in the closet. I am so glad I bought this set, the size, the quality is exact what I wanted. The handle size is different for different pieces. Stainless Steel Sushi Sashimi Knife

Stainless Steel Sushi Sashimi KnifeThis is my only review in years of using Amazon. This needs a review! I love to cook, and have owned many knives in the last 39 years. This is by far the most versatile knife I have ever used. Back to buy 2 more as gifts. Virtually the only knife I now use except when only a much smaller blade will do. Still sharp after a year of constant use, slice, dice, smash, carve. Yes, a set of specialty knives will do a little better, but not much. Oh yes, its great for cutting sushi as well!

I just was back to get another as a present and saw the questions and review. A quick update from my usage. I am not any sort of knife expert, but an accomplished practical family cook with about 35 years experience. The bottom line is that its still the only knife larger than a steak knife I use. I have actually thrown out given the rest away. I have had to sharpen it two times with a inexpensive stone picked up locally, and I was surprised how well that worked. Its last major task was Thanksgiving when it chopped, diced, and carved up a meal for eight. I find the shorter size, and I believe slightly heavier blade than some sushi knives, helps to make it such a good all purpose knife. May not be the best at anything, still very good with everything I have tried. I am not easy on my tools and it has held up very well.

The blade on this one is 8.5 inches and it does look like the less expensive Seki Ryu brand yanagi bocho as mentioned. Since the one I purchased has different markings, an almost worn out komodo dragon engraved in a circlular pattern on the blade, I cannot be certain its the same as this or the other one pictured it arrives. I originally paid about and shipping, so either way it is the same or less as 2 years ago.

I normally spend more time with my purchases before writing a review but in this case I want to make other shoppers aware of the fact that this very same knife is available on Amazon at a substantially lower price. Shame on the vendor for passing this off for something other, and tacking on a higher price, with no value added. In fact, the opposite is true, not only from the higher price, but from the misleading product name. They did not even bother to repackage the product--that is how I found out the original brand name. Now that I have the knife in my hand, I see that it is actually a Seki Ryu brand yanagi bocho.

For starters, this is *not* a Santoku and cannot be classified as a Chef's knife (gyutou) either. This is a yanagi-style sashimi knife. Blade length is 210 mm (8 inches) from choil to tip, which is very short for a yanagiba. The principle behind this type of knife is that from the sharpness and length of the blade one is supposed to cut fish meat with one clean stroke, no sawing back and forth, or the texture of the flesh gets ruined. Total length is 330 mm, and weighs in at about 77 grams! Spine thickness at bolster, about 1.78 mm. In any case, this is still a good buy, considering that the truly professional-grade yanagibas can cost up to a hundred times as much, or more.

The handle is wood, D-shaped and because of this, plus the single-bevel edge, is definitely not meant for the sinistral user. I doubt if you can find a left-handed version. The bolster is plastic, instead of the traditional water buffalo horn--but what can you expect at this price? Fit and finish is fair, a tad blade-heavy (balance at about 30 millimeters north of the choil).

To find the "cheaper" version of this product, just do an Amazon search for "sekiryu sashimi." I cannot determine what kind of metal they used for the blade, but for a single-bevel edge, it does not seem to be that sharp. Don't get me wrong--out of the box, it is still very sharp--sharper than any traditional western-style knife out there. The metal seems to transfer very easily onto a ceramic steel (soft?). I will see for myself how well it will sharpen, and how well it can hold its edge. Bevel angle seems to be greater than 15° (probably to protect the edge from the "average" user?), so it should sharpen to a much keener edge after I'm done with it. Despite the short blade, this knife should do very well for almost anything that your traditional slicer kitchen knife is used for, just not as rugged.

For the budding Japanese-knife enthusiast, this makes for an ideal "practice" knife. So, in spite of all my complaints, I can still give this item four stars!

Buy Stainless Steel Sushi Sashimi Knife Now

Not a bad deal for the price. It has a semi-rudimentary handle but it is Japanese and very sharp... I'd reccomend it.

Read Best Reviews of Stainless Steel Sushi Sashimi Knife Here

I purchased this knife because I wanted a dedicated sashimi knife for the sole purpose of slicing sushi rolls and ingredients for sushi. Japanese knives, such as this, are usually sharpened at a much sharper angle than traditional knives, so they are very sharp, and this knife is no different. It is very sharp, and has maintained its edge after 2 months of use. It is very inexpensive, but the actual blade seems to be of a sufficient quality to handle fish. The knife has a D-handle, which means the handle is in the shape of a "d" so that it is flat on one side and curved on the other, to fit into your palm. This means that the knife is designed for right-handed people and will feel odd in the left hand. The handle is very cheap, however it has held up and I don't really have a problem with it since I only use it for one purpose. The knife is sharpened on both sides of the blade. Traditionally, a knife like this for sushi should be single-ground (sharpened on one side), which it is believed makes cleaner cuts and doesn't tear the nori on the sushi. I have used this for dozens of rolls and don't have a problem with it tearing and not making clean cuts, provided I dip the blade in water first. I should mention that unlike the manufacturer's picture of the knife, the tip of the blade is rounded and not pointed at all.

If you're not looking to spend a lot of money on a sushi knife, I would recommend this knife. However I do not think it should be used as an everyday knife and shouldn't be used for cutting things like beef or tougher foods which might dull the blade.

EDIT: 6 Dec 2011 Have to change my review from 4 stars to 1. After maybe one hour total use with the knife, the blade has separated from the handle (see my picture). Closer inspection of how the blade is designed to attach to the handle leads me to believe that this is likely to happen with other knives, since the piece that connects to the notch is just not long enough. I always washed this knife by hand and took care of it. It still has a decent blade, but that won't mean much when it breaks off while you're slicing. Buyer beware.

Want Stainless Steel Sushi Sashimi Knife Discount?

This is not a 5 star knife at any price, but for the price point it's pretty damn nice. If you're looking for a quick almost disposable blade, it's sharp, it's thin, and it cuts through fish like butter. The blade does not hold an edge for very long of course, but if you hone it before and after each use it will last you for a good amount of time. Handle leaves a -tonto be desired.

But let's be honest, the best knives range from 100 dollars to the moon in price. You get what you pay for to some degree, but if you'll only use this knife once or twice a month, and know how to hone it, go for it. Can't beat it for 15 dollars.

Guy Fieri Double Blade Salad Chopper, Black

Guy Fieri Double Blade Salad Chopper, BlackThe design of this chopper is very poor. The blades are too close together. Salad gets stuck in between and I have to use a knife to force it out. The blades also do not seem vey sharp and it did not cut all the way through the romaine lettuce. I am extremely disappointed in it. I may use it for chopping nuts, but that is about it.

This product picture looks awesome, but I gave the product 2 stars because it is difficult to use as a salad chopper and that's what I bought it for. Cuts fine, sharp blades, but there is so little space between the blade and your grip, that there is a backup of food pushing against your fingers as you are trying to chop a salad. The product say you can use as an herb chopper, and it's great for that only don't get for a salad chopper. Chop, chop, clean it out, chop, chop, clean it out. I did better with my cleaver chop, chopping.

Buy Guy Fieri Double Blade Salad Chopper, Black Now

I got this to make home versions of those wonderful "chopped salads" at Subway and while it does the job of chopping everything to uniformly-sized pieces, it's a pain to use because food gets stuck between the blades to the point where you can chop only twice then have to manually remove everything caught in between. Maybe if the blades weren't so close together, or maybe if there was a bigger space between the handle and the blades, it would be ideal. But it's too inconvenient and wasteful of time to have to keep removing the stuck food. I'd highly recommend as something to chop onion tops or herbs but for salads, I'd say keep looking for something else to come out.

Norpro Citrus Peeler

Norpro Citrus PeelerMy boyfriend gave me one of these originally, and after I used it a few times I wondered how I managed without it. I eat a lot of oranges, and it's so much easier to peel them with this. I make a circumference around the top, and then slice down from there to the base all around the orange. Then I use the end without the tiny plastic blade to pry the peel away from the flesh to start each peel. My fingers and fingernails never get overwhelmed with pith now. Not only does it make the job easier, but it's fun to use too, and I love its pleasing little orange shape and the way it easily fits on my finger when I'm using it. My boyfriend has one that is several years old, and the one he gave me is two years old now, and they still cut into the peel easily and are still in use. I ordered 10 of them so I could have another at work and extras to give away to family, friends and coworkers who were attracted to it when they'd see me use it, and several of them have told me how much they love it too. I've never tried any other kind of peeler, but I totally love and recommend this one.

I have tried many different types of citrus peelers over the years, and this by far has always been my favorite. They are long lasting, and I have yet to have one break. I usually lose them or they are borrowed and not returned. They fit in any size lunch bag. The last time I purchased this peeler was over 10 years ago from a cookingware store. I am finally down to my last one, and was happy to find they are still available. The cutting point does wear down with time, but is still able to cut. The rounded edge is similar to your finger nail and will help remove the peel as well as the white stuff. No more getting orange peel under your nails. I have small hands, and this tool works great for me. I highly recommend it.

Will see if it will keep its sharpness, as stainless usually doesnt keep a sharp edge.

Strong tool for slicing. I use it to slice brick cheese, and there's no other way I would try. It gives you the best leverage and control.

Does what it promises but metal in slicer may not last too long before it will show signs of wear and stop making a sharp cut.

Endurance Stainless Acrylic Grapefruit Double Knife

Endurance Stainless Acrylic Grapefruit Double KnifeOn the double bladed end of this tool, the blade tips are very firmly pressed together. How does one straddle a grapefruit's membrane with that? I tried prying them apart a bit, but they don't hold that position; they slam back shut. If I did magically manage to straddle it and attempt to draw it along the membrane, the serrations either tore through it or snagged some fruit and dragged it away. Hey! I wanted that fruit! It would have essentially been just as effective had I grabbed a cleaver and started hacking away maniacally at the grapefruit.

Honestly, I should have recorded my experience because it was rather humorous... sort of like those Snuggie commercials where some daft individual couldn't figure out how to wrap a regular blanket or robe around herself, but was restored to sanity when presented with the Snuggie and its built-in arms. Except I can't imagine even the most dexterous of individuals making the use of this grapefruit tool appear effortless. (Though apparently some did. I might benefit from viewing one of those videos, too!)

The other end's curved and serrated edge is marginally more functional at releasing the peripheral edge of the grapefruit section, but frankly I found it MUCH faster to use a small, sharp knife to run along both sides of each membrane, then using a plain (or grapefruit) spoon to nom it.

The serrated spoon I also bought Stainless Steel Endurance Grapefruit Spoons,Set of Two works very well and, once you become adept at using it, is just fine for separating the fruit from the membranes without the use of this reviewed product, the Endurance Grapefruit Double Knife.

This knife is absolutely perfect for cutting under the fruit in half a grapefruit and then cutting it into sections to be scooped out with a spoon. The double blade on the sectioning end works wonders, making a nice slice on either side of the membrane between each section. I am very impressed.

This knife is perfect. I don't even like grapefruit; bought it for my wife and I like it so much that I insist on preparing her grapefruits for her. If you eat grapefruit you need this knife.

We love grapefruit but finding a good knife that salvages as much fruit as possible isn't always easy. This tool serves 2-3 functions nicely. It separates segments cleanly and cuts from the pith of the skin nicely, it also can be used to scoop the segments out of the shell if you prefer to serve in a dish. Amazon price beats the competition.

One end of this double ended knife consists of two parallel blades used to straddle the membrane separating two fruit sections. The other end is a curved blade used to separate the fruit from the rind. It works well. It only takes a few seconds to prepare a half grapefruit. The knife isn't accurate enough so that you can shake the fruit out of the shell, but it certainly makes it easier and more pleasant to eat with a spoon. I have been using one for 4 or 5 years now and since the blades cannot be sharpened, I ordered a couple to keep in reserve.

A small thing, indeed, but nice to have if you like grapefruit.
