Hagerty 19100 6-Piece Place Setting Roll, BlueWe purchased our solid silver place settings and serving pieces in 1998. At the same time, we purchased Hagerty bags for most, but not all pieces. These bags do a very good job of keeping the silver safe from tarnish, oxidation and corrosion. Three years ago (12/10/07) we purchased additional bags for 4 place settings and 4 service pieces. About a year and a half later, we were appalled to find 4 place settings and 4 service pieces not tarnished (dark brown), but corroded (greenish blue patina), whereas 8 place settings and 4 serving pieces kept in the older bags were pristine. We did not track which bags were related to the corrosion at that time, but suspected the new bags (all with a "made in China" tag). We carefully polished and stored all the silver. On opening them for use for Thanksgiving 2010, 4 place settings and 4 serving pieces were corroded again, this time we know for sure they were stored in the new bags. Needless to say we are very disappointed in the 2007 purchase and Hagerty's failure maintain a quality product.

UPDATE March 2011. The President of Hagerty responded to a letter with an apology and advised me that they no longer use Chinese suppliers for these bags. She sent me replacements for all the subject bags. I have put some silver in the new bags. If these are the same as the older bags, I will be able to report success in about a year.

UPDATE November 2012. Thanksgiving 2012 was the first opportunity to use our silver since using the replacement bags. I am pleased to report that there was absolutely no sign of discoloration on any of the pieces. Hagerty now again has my complete confidence.

These cutlery rolls are absolutely the only way to store your silver flatware. Instead of stacking your cutlery on top of each other as happens in storage boxes, each item goes into its own storage slot and each pouch holds an entire place setting all neatly rolled up in silver cloth.

Wooden storage boxes are pretty, but this method has truly helped prevent scratches caused from "stacking".

Instead, I simply place all the pouches in the drawer of my china cabinet and next time I am setting a formal table, I simply reach in an pull out how ever many pouches I am going to need.

I absolutely love this method of storing my silverware. My set was brand new in 1965 when I got married. I love to entertain and I am one to use my good china and silver as often as possible. Yet despite the many uses over the years...storing each place setting in a separate storage pouch has helped to keep my set looking "gently used" over the years.

Now I will soon be purchasing a set for our daughter's silver set.

I am writing to confirm Aquanut's findings.

I bought this setting roll at Bed Bath & Beyond, in order to ensure I recieved a "Made in USA" roll. My sterling silverware is made by a highly reputable producer (Reed and Barton), and all cleaned at the same time, using Hagerty silver polish.

It has been about two weeks, and the silverware stored in this roll is already noticeably tarnished. By contrast, in the same cabinet drawer, wrapped in a no-name microfiber cloth, the silver was pristine.

After checking the Amazon reviews on the Hagerty zippered hollowware page, I noticed this defective cloth problem seems to be widespread, and common to both the USA and China versions.

Update: Hagerty replied to a letter I wrote them earlier, and sent me a Made In USA replacement roll. I will update here in a few months with any findings since then.

Update (6 months later): Silver in the new roll looks good so far. No noticeable corrosion at all! Bumping up the stars to reflect the new roll.

Update (1 year later): Silver still looks good. Bumping the stars. Great roll, and the company clearly stands behind their products. Just be sure to double check your silver and make sure you get one of the new Made in USA batches.

You basically need to hand dry them very thoroughly or the blades will rust. Mine have rusted even from air drying in my dish rack. By the way, they are not dishwasher safe.

knives can be place in a dishwasher, but they MUST to be dry inmediatly to prevent rust....but everybody knows that for fine cluttery the best results are obtain by hand washing. They look so good on my kitchen counter!!!

The Ultimate Edge 10-Inch Standard Diamond Sharpening Steel

The Ultimate Edge 10-Inch Standard Diamond Sharpening SteelI confess to being a bit of a geek when it comes to knife sharpening. I keep all of my knifes razor sharp and a box of band-aids in the kitchen for friends who are unaccustomed to working with really sharp knives.

I have found the Ultimate Edge to combine the action of a medium sharpening stone with that of a sharpening Steel. Like a steel, the small area of contact with the knife will straighten an edge that has rolled over as a result of contact with something unyielding. Unlike a steel, the diamond grit embedded along its length removes enough metal to create micro-serrations in the edge.

Micro-serrations are microscopic teeth raised in the edge through contact with a hard abrasive surface. The good thing about micro-serrations is they help a knife bite. For example, such a knife will slice through the skin of a tomato without slipping. The bad thing about micro-serrations is they wear away rather quickly and must be renewed frequently.

Most folks who spend too much time thinking knife sharpening prefer a "polished edge" which is achieved by stropping the edge after shaping and sharpening with a stone. Stropping (sometimes called buffing) involves removing the scratches (and micro-serrations) left by the sharpening stone, resulting in a perfectly smooth edge. A polished edge is extremely sharp and relatively durable. The edge on a new razor blade is an example of a polished edge. I touch up the edges of my knives the first time I feel them slip cutting into a tomato. For knives I use every day that translates to about once a month.

If you are someone who wants to maintain a polished edge on your knives I would not recommend the Ultimate Edge (or any of the other diamond coated steels out there). For the other 99.5% of the population, this is a very useful tool to maintain your knives. With a few strokes, you can raise those serrations and have a ripping sharp knife. Do this every few uses or just before you start a task where a really sharp knife makes a difference.

One final thought for those few who have made it this far. By its nature, the Ultimate Edge will create a secondary bevel (or possibly a concave bevel depending on how consistent your are in maintaining the knife/steel angle). This secondary bevel will tend to increase over time eventually reaching the point where it will affect the knifes performance. When this happens, it is wise to have the knife professionally sharpened to reestablish the primary bevel. You will know you have reached this point when you have to hold the knife at an unreasonably steep angle to the steel in order to affect the edge and/or you find it takes a large number of strokes to retouch the edge.

I purchased this Diamond Sharpening Steel from Amazon and have used it for a couple of days. It really works superb and overall performance is above all expectations. It not only realigns the edge but sharpens it as well. I.e. it removes material (steel) in infinitesimal amount that accumulates on the surface of the tool as extremely fine dust. It takes only a few effortless strokes for simple edge realignment if the knife is sharp or few minutes of work if the knife is dull. But in any case, the result is amazing! Once in a while this Diamond Sharpening Steel should be put under running water for only a few seconds for cleaning and steel dust residue flushes with water. Maintenance is simple and easy.

So, whether you have cheap knives or expensive ones this tool is worth the money. The only issue I leave open is durability of this Diamond Sharpening Steel. Theoretically it should last forever but in reality it remains to be seen.

I sharpen my knives every 4 or 5 uses and find that these sharpeners last about two years. They are the best you can use to get a very sharp edge, but they do wear out. Scrub with a brush and soap and you can extend life. I am ordering my third sharpener and also give them to relatives who are surprised how dull their knives were.

I bought this sharpening steel a few years ago, and it worked great in the beginning. It left the knife edge re-shaped but a little rough, so I used a regular steel to remove the roughness. As time went by, I noticed that the diamond cutting power was reducing and now the middle section of the ultimate edge diamond sharpening steel has little or no diamonds left on it. It will not re-shape a knife edge anymore and barely smooths the edge as well as a good regular steel. I just ordered a new diamond steel from a different manufacturer (Wusthof). Another negative is the fact the knife edge particles that are removed clog the space in between the diamond particles and must be removed on a regular basis. There are some other designs that work better I believe.

There is nothing in a kitchen more dangerous than a dull knife. I cooked for a living when I was younger and appreciate the need for a well maintained tool. I've had Henckels knives for over 20 years, kept them very sharp and rarely had to use a stone to do so and never a strop. My old steel wore out and I was excited about this one. With it, I have reduced sharp knives to my version of garbage the steel is simply too coarse. I don't require a "polished" edge but I do require sharp and this steel will not do the job.

Mercer Cutlery Genesis 7-Piece Forged Steak Knife Set, Steel/BlackI bought these steak knives to replace my old serrated ones from college, the kind that "never need sharpening". Well, it's true I never sharpened the old ones because they had very deep serrated edges, but this meant literally tearing through your meat.

In my quest to upgrade all of my kitchen-ware and knives, I bought these to match my other Mercer cutlery. I've been very happy with the quality of the Mercer knives and I like the "rubberized" handle because it is thicker, offers better control when wet and still looks like very high quality.

You can't tell from the pictures, but these steak knives have the same thick rubberized handle, very comfortable. From the tip to about 1/3 of the way down these knives are serrated, very slightly though, not very deep. I haven't prepared a good steak yet to test these out, but on fruits and veggies that I've cut, these are great. These knives are very sharp and heavy enough that I would never imagine these getting bent from a little misuse, which should never happen now that we have nice cutlery.

I will update after I get to truly use these as they were intended.

The knives were shipped quickly, arrived when expected and were exactly what I was hoping for. You might not be able to tell, but the tips of the knives are serrated. I almost wish they weren't because the un-serrated section cuts like a dream.

Wusthof Classic 10-Piece Knife Set with BlockThere are really two main competitors in the high-end mainstream kitchen knife market: Henckels and Wusthof. Those who have used both usually have a preference. My preference (and therefore bias you should know about) is for the Wusthofs.

The Wusthof Classic line is the more conservative counterpart to the Grand Prix line. The only difference, however, is the handle style. I personally prefer the Grand Prix, but this is an issue of personal preference. The balance and grip of these knives are as close to perfect as I have found. For those wondering what benefits a higher priced knife provides, one benefit is that the blade (or tang) is one piece all the way through the handle. This makes the blade much stronger, and less likely to snap.

This set includes an 8 inch chef's knife, a 3 ½ inch paring knife, a 6 inch sandwich knife, 8 inch bread, a 5 inch salami, a 2 ¾ inch trimming knife, a sharpening steel, and an oak block

The 8 inch chef's knife is a great knife. Wusthof offers four sizes of chef's knives in the Classic version, 5, 6, 8 and 10 inch. For most home cooks, I think the 8 inch knife is the best choice. The 6 inch is a bit small for bigger jobs, but the 10 inch is too big for most jobs. While the 8 inch isn't perfect for all uses, if you are only buying one size chef's knife (and most people only buy one), this is the one I would recommend.

As for the 3 ½ inch paring knife, this knife falls into the category of overkill for me. Most cooks will get by just fine with the 4 ½ inch utility knife. There is really no notable difference in size for the vast majority of applications between the 3 ½ inch paring knife and the 4 ½ inch utility knife. I prefer the 4 ½ inch utility knife, but the 3 ½ inch paring knife will do the trick.

I have found very few uses for the 6 inch sandwich or 5 inch salami knives. I prefer the larger size of the chef's knife or the smaller 4 ½ inch utility knife. These knives are just the wrong width and length for most tasks, and falls into the overkill department, except when part of a set.

The 3 ¾ inch trimming knife, however, is a good length for small tasks, like trimming fat from cuts of meat.

The bread knife, is a great knife. Many people think tomatoes are the hardest food items to clearly cut. I think bread is much more difficult; but this knife makes the task seem easy. However, I prefer the 9 inch knife over the 8 inch included in this set.

When it comes to sharpening steels, I have found very little difference between Henckels and Wusthof. As long as you buy a high end steel, you really won't go wrong. Therefore, I shop for this item on price, and Henckels has a price advantage. However as the steel comes with the set, you won't go wrong with this steel.

This set is a good deal as far as price. However, keep in mind you really only get 7 knives. Adding the set of steak knives (which I consider a luxury, and not a necessity), will fill the remainder of the block.

Finally, I would recommend you compare this set with the 10 piece couple's set, listed as ASIN: B00005MGKD. That set replaces provides a second chef's knife, a longer bread knife, and deletes the 2 ¾ inch trimming knife. It is more expensive, so compare your needs, and see my review of the other set.

I love these knives. They are truly amazing. My wife and I did a fair amount of research before we bought our set (comsumer reports, etc..)and we concluded that Wusthof knives were the best. You might think that they are a bit pricey, but the are worth it. If you have never prepared a meal with a truly fine knife such as a Wusthof, then you are in for a treat. Use these knives once, and you will never want another.

When buying these knives, our biggest problem was deciding between the Classic and the Grand Prix. Although the Grand Prix is slightly more comfortable, I prefer the construction of the Classic. If you inspect the knives, you will see that the Wusthof Classic has a full metal tang with 3 rivets. The Grand Prix, although having the same blade, has a smaller, cylindrical tang that runs the entire handle of the knive. This tang is secured by a single large rivet at the end of the handle. Although I'm sure the Grand Prix is well built, I bought these knives for a lifetime of use and heartier construction of the Classics just appealed to me more.

So, In a nutshell, if you buy Wusthof, you will not be disappointed.

Cuisinart 14-Piece Triple-Riveted Forged Knife Set with Bonus Santoku KnifeI tried a few knife sets before settling on this one. I tried the Kitchenaid & Farberware sets and they cannot match the quality of these Cuisinarts. They are so sharp that I had to change the way I prepared vegs they are like razors! They are heavy and well balanced. Did I mention sharp? Be careful!

These knives are not meant to compete with Wustof, Henkels, and Furi knives. What do you expect for $100?

However, as a set of everyday knives I have found them to be very nice. They keep an edge after I gave them a proper sharpening, they look nice, and they get the job done without messing up your nice knives. I have a few pieces of professional cutlery and of course these don't compare, but I'm not going to throw $1000 down to get that type of set, either.

I wanted a REALLY nice set (nicely balanced, remained sharp, very dependable), and did not want to pay the outrageous price of other sets. This is my first Wusthof purchase. I currently own a Henckels knife set and wanted to add the 7" Santoku Chef knife to my collection for a new twist. The Wusthof Ikon Classic Santoku has an incredibly sharp edge, cutting through soft tomatoes with little effort was a joy. I nicked and cut myself without even knowing because the blade was so sharp. I love the ergonomic way the Santoku handle feels in my hand, the knife is very balanced. I haven't been able to rock this knife the same way like my classic edge knives, so this knife definitely cuts differently. The hollow edge is supposed to keep food from sticking to the blade while making cutting easier, it made cutting seem easier, not so sure about food not sticking to blade. Sadly after about 3 weeks of cutting on a wooden cutting board it had already lost some of it's razor sharp edge and will need sharpening. Wasn't expecting this to happen so quickly, but I use it several times per day. I'm planning on adding the regular Hollow Edge Ikon Classic 6" Chef Knife & 3.5" Paring knife to my growing Wusthof collection (Merry Christmas to me!)and eventually phasing out my tired Henckels for the new Hollow Edge tech. All in all, I'm converting.

I have owned this product for over a year. I use it exclusively as a meat grinder to make a sandwich spread recipe. I have never used it as a tomato strainer. It takes medium size chucks of meat and cheese and grinds them up great. The meat and cheese sizes are approximately 2-3 inches round, and it has no problems with these. For folks who use the old fashion hand crank meat grinder, it works exactly the same way, only using electricity instead of hand cranking. Never had a problem with oil or metal shavings. Really like the product although it does have several more parts to clean than the non electric one.

8'osaka Yanagiba KnifeThis is a very nice slicing or carving knife. An Asian sashimi or yanagi knife has a single bevel edge either on the right or left side of the blade used for preparing sushi. When I saw the nice wooden box which contained the knife the label described the knife as having a Euro grind. After examining the knife it does have a european double bevel edge. The knife is extremely sharp and with a 50 rockwell hardness scale should be easy to sharpen and still be durable and not as fragile as blades with a hardness in the 60's. The blade has the appearance of Damascus steel, but doesn't say it's made from Damascus steel. The blade is VG-10, 67 layers which are forged together which make the blade the strongest you can buy without have a custom made knife.

Steak Knife 5OK, this is a really good steak knife. The handle is a nice, square, secure to grip with your hand. I find that it is just as good on humungous steaks as skinny ones. The blade is high carbon stainless steel that is just as good as Japanese or German ones that cost 4 or 5 times as much. Now that I am used to it, the fancy steak knives that expensive steak houses supply are pale and inefficient in comparison.

However, that is not the reason I give it such a high rating. I find it to be a fabulous prep knife: soft, heritage tomatoes, cooked veggies, fruit, bread and sandwich rolls, anything that is soft. For me, this is just as essential as my big chef knife.

I got this for my sister for her birthday. It is really cute but what I ordered and what I got were two different things. The handle on the spreader is different than the one that is pictured. Instead of three round ladybugs that make up the handle, it's just one whole ladybug. I'm sort of confused on why that is. My sister loved it either way, I just don't understand why I got a different item.

i replaced my cheap knives (purchased at family dollar for less than $10 for

about 15 knives) with farberware.....i bought about 10 knives. they are the worst you can imagine.....the stainless steel blades rusted and were sull from day one. i wish i had my family dollar knives back. they were actually quite good.

Set of 2 Cast Iron Sizzling Steak Plate #5294These plates came with no instructions. It is unknown whether they have to be seasoned or not. When I washed the plates, the water beaded on the surface of the plates. I am not sure if this means the plates have a coating or if cast iron always beads like this. I am assuming they are cast iron with no coating and seasoned them. The plates work perfectly and the meal on these plates was excellent. I cooked the steak, placed the plates in the oven (with no steak on them) at 450 degrees until they were very hot. Then placed the plates on the table, rubbed butter (I know, fattening) to the surface of the plates, and placed pieces of steak onto the plates. The steak sizzled in the butter. The meal was excellent. Not something I will use every day. But when I cook steak, these will work out well. Have always wanted to make a steak meal like my favorite steak restaurant. Now I can.

I gave this product four stars instead of five because: Where are the instructions?????

At least a paper saying they have to be seasoned or not.

Searched for a while to find the right "sizzzle plates". Always wanted to have our steaks served on hot plates just like the restaurants do. Now we got 'em.

I carefully ordered plates which had a smooth cutting surface. I received 4 plates from 2 separate source companies, all of which have a ribbed surface which makes it tough cutting steaks. I have returned them all, requesting they ship smooth surfaced items as shown in the picture.

Small and cheap looking. A steak and vegetables won't even fit on one of the plates. Immediately returned the product.

Food sizzles on these preheated plates and they hold the heat for the entire meal. Handles make transport from the oven to table. The wooden chargers are cheaply made pine and the heat has heated the glue used, but we know how to re-glue when necessary.

My sister is obsessed with cats. And since it was christmas time AND she was moving cross country I wanted her gift to be small but meaningful. That's when I found these little kitties. For foods that are hard to cut (like carrots) I noticed it even moresometimes I had to pick out the long strings of black plastic from my salad. It's shocking to me that this product is even being sold.

If you don't like eating plastic particles, you should invest in another cutting board.

Amazon's "Product Details" dimensions are incorrect.

Here are the correct measurements: 13.8 x 9.8 x 0.28 inches.

Measurements confirmed on the purple one, but the model numbers --all are 339.XX variants-imply that it applies to all color variants.

Good news: Amazon refunded my purchase price due to the thickness being WAY off.

Bad news: Submitted this correction twice to Amazon (refund request and product page correction) over a week ago, but they have ignored it.

Hope this review helps others looking for a 1/2" thick board to avoid buying this one.

This is a nice cutting board not too big just the right size for cutiing your veggies. I love the color (purple) it is a nice shade of purple. The quality of this product is terrific it won't warp after you put it in the dishwasher.

I would've given it a 5 star rating had it grooves around the edge to catch drippings. Further, you have to put something under it as it will slide around on the countertop. On the positive side, my knives glide across smoothly and all the cutting and chopping I do are easier. Best of all, just toss it in the dishwasher when you're done!
