Wüsthof Gourmet 14-Piece Deluxe Knife Block Set

Wüsthof Gourmet 14-Piece Deluxe Knife Block SetI've owned this knife set for a year now, and I'm 100% satisfied. These Wustof knives are great they keep their edge, they are razor sharp, and they hold up very well to daily usage.

I was hesitant to buy the Gourmet set based on reviews here on Amazon and elsewhere. The Gourmet knives are stamped, not forged like the Classics. There are very minor design differences that make the Gourmets look slightly different than the Classics. Otherwise, these knives are exactly like Classics. First, the stickers. The Wustof emblem is a sticker on the handle. The emblem is a sticker on the Classics, too, so if the sticker really bothers you that much, go with a different knife manufacturer. My stickers have not faded, worn, or shown any sign of coming off under heavy usage in one year. Take that as you will. Second, rusting. These are carbon steel knives, people. Steel rusts if you let water sit on it. My knives have not rusted in the least. I hand wash them, wipe them off in one swipe with a paper towel, and air dry after use. Not a spot of rust. If you want to stick these in the dishwasher, or want to let them soak in water, you're going to get rust. Take care of these knives and they're fine.

I give these knives five stars. Unless you really feel you need forged, ground carbon steel Classics for hundreds more, buy these Gourmets.

Forged steel was out of my price range, so I had to go with stamped. ($200 is enough for me, thank you.) The set is nice, a bit light, but good... EXCEPT FOR THE STICKERS. Yes, the red logos on the handles are--in fact--red pixelated laser printer stickers that get ruined in the wash. Get some Goo Gone and spend 20 minutes taking them off before washing the set. Of course, if you were paying for the brand... there is still the logo etched into some of the blades. :)

They are not the top of the line but respectable for a budding gourmet. Proof of their effectiveness can be found underneath the several bandaids I have had to wear since accidentally mishandling the bed knife once and a steak knife once.

What a joy to have decent knives to use in the kitchen. It helps to inspire me as a cook.

Great for the price and definitely do not put these in the dishwasher. I am proud to own, even if it is on the lower end of the spectrum, one of the finest knife collections currently on the market.

I did some research and saw that these knives had good reviews. After using them for a few months, I noticed a little rust and the rivets were eroding!!! (I washed these knives by hand only, no dishwasher) I would not have believed it if I hadn't seen it for myself. I didn't expect such a good company to have such poor quality. Maybe Wusthof has better knives, but these are no good.

I was very suprised to find out how thin the steel blades were, so thin they bended while I was cutting an apple.

The knives got rusted and dull after just a few days of use. I looked throughout the website to find customer servcie number however i could not. Will demand my money back, including shipping cost.

Wusthof Ikon 9-Inch Cook's Knife with Blackwood Handle

Wusthof Ikon 9-Inch Cook's Knife with Blackwood HandleLove the finish and overall size of the knife, as well as the fit for my hand, which is pretty small. As with any big German knife, expect it to be a little heavy. The only part I don't like is that when using a pinch grip, the top side of the bolster is a little sharp, but I plan to grind it down so it's a little more seamless where it melds into the spine of the blade.

I researched kitchen knives for a long time before deciding to buy a set of these Wusthof Ikon Blackwood knives. They sharpen well and hold their edge. They have a full tang and a nice heavy handle that superbly balances each particular knife. This set should last me the rest of my life.

You get what you pay for, cuts like a charm! There is no case with this knife, I suggest buying the blade protector. There was a little scratch on mine when I received it.

Works well. It's sharp, well balanced on the center for easy handling, beautiful, and cleans easy. The only problem is that the wood handle MUST be clean and dry when you put this knife away. Well, same goes for the blade too I guess, but you need to be more careful with the handle. If you want something that's less troublesome, you can buy the version with the black handle, same knife.

Victorinox Cutlery 8-Inch Forged Chef's Knife, Black POM Handle

Victorinox Cutlery 8-Inch Forged Chef's Knife, Black POM HandleI work in a production kitchen and this knife kicks butt. It takes a beating, very solid, heavy steel. I also own a shun which I do not use at work because it is delicate. this forschner can easily break down thirty chickens or cut a case of potatoes without taking a ding or going dull, though I hone it throughout the day when I am doing heavy chopping. the handle is not rounded which was a little hard on my hand until I formed a thick callus. It is great for heavy kitchen work, if you're into that sort of thing.

Sharp, well weighted, and comfortable. does not hold its edge like a more expensive knife but excellent for the price.

Birchware Compostable Wooden Knives 100/pcs.

Birchware Compostable Wooden Knives 100/pcs.We had an outdoor wedding and a big BBQ instead of a super fancy shindig. We used compostable plates and utensils instead of renting plates, silverware, etc. I was a little worried about people cutting up chicken with these but they worked perfectly. And I didn't feel bad about throwing them out afterwards. It also fit right in with our outdoorsy/summer camp theme.

Purchased the whole set of these (Knives, Forks & Spoons) for a party. They were a huge attention getter and fun to have. People all thought they were very interesting. They worked well for everything we were eating mostly cold salads and other party foods. Look great with images stamped onto the handles.

Kuhn Rikon PushPan

Kuhn Rikon PushPan, 8-InchI make cheese cake often since I LOVE it. And I have three springform pans a 10", a 9" and a 7". One of my recipes calls for the cake to be baked in a hot water bath but first the pan must be wrapped in a double layer of heavy-duty aluminum foil to keep the water from seeping into the cake. I've made this cake a half dozen times and the foil wrapping is such a pain in the butt and also if you do not do it correctly, the water seeps in making the cake a soggy mess and wasting a lot of very expensive ingredients.

I saw in a catalog a new-fangled cheesecake pan that did not have the spring latch on the side. It has a rubber gasket rimming the pan bottom to seal it tight. To remove the cake it said to place the pan on top of something sturdy that was taller than the cake pan and then push down on the sides of the pan. No need to use a knife to loosen the edges one little push and the pan bottom with the cake on it would slip right out. I doubted that this would work but still I wanted to try it and so I ordered the Kuhn Rikon PushPan on amazon.com for $30.

I was very nervous about using this pan and so I first tested it with a normal (no hot water bath) cheesecake. I made the recipe posted below. The pan worked just as they said it would cake slipped right out. Even better there was no dripping of butter onto the bottom of my oven. Loved that. One problem however I ordered the 9" pan and made the same recipe I've been using in my old springform 9" pans for 30 years. The Kuhn Rikon pan was too small to hold all the batter so I put the overflow into a small bowl and baked it too.

The yesterday I got brave and decided to test its water-tight claim. Made the chocolate-swirl cheese cake that gets baked in the hot water bath 4 cream cheese $8; sour cream $2, and sugar, eggs, chocolate an expensive endeavor. Once again though the 9" recipe I have made many times before did not fit in this pan. The overflow this time almost filled my 7" cheesecake pan. But both cakes looked great when I took them out of the oven. Then the waiting three hours to cool and then the overnight refrigeration.

I could not wait until suppertime and so I decided to have a piece for breakfast. Cake slipped easily out of the push pan and wonder of wonders the cake was not soggy or wet at all.

So the pan works it's just not big enough for normal 9" recipes. Rather than try to redo all my 9" cheesecake recipes, I am going to write to the company and ask that they exchange this one for the 10" pan.... or give me my money back. I like the pan just not the size.

I am an accomplished baker; I bake everyday and am currently working on a cookbook. I have made hundreds of cheesecakes using a traditional springform pan. Whenever I make cakes using a water bath I have always wrapped the pan in 2 layers of foil. This has always worked for me.

I was excited to try the new Push Pan and did so for the first time yesterday. I made Junior's New York Cheesecake. You cannot imagine how disappointed I was when I removed the ring from the Push Pan. The base of my cheesecake was entirely WET! All around the sides, where the red silicone ring is, was completely drenched!

I followed the instructions completely; pushed down the base into the pan, made sure it was secure and even. The cheesecake came out delicious, however, the crust was soggy; I do not recommend this pan to be used without wrapping it well in foil before putting in a water bath.

However, I must say that the unmolding of the cake was very easy and the sides were nice and smooth; the bottom wet, but smooth...

Buyer, beware. If you do decide to buy this pan, WRAP the pan with foil in the traditional manner!!!!!

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program 9" pan

I have a large collection of well used springform pans from cheap tinned steel to LaForme's expensive "leak-proof" enameled steel. They all get the job done but leak. Even double wrapping the bottom of those pans with heavy foil when baking cheesecakes in a water bath would be no guarantee water would not find a way in. So I was very anxious to try this pan and immediately put it to the test by baking a cheesecake in a water bath with no foil wrapping. It worked like a charm, the cheesecake was perfectly dry.

This pan also is also constructed from very heavy weight metal; 19 oz. versus a typical 9" tinned steel pan at 9 ounces. So you don't get over-baking at the edges that you do with a thinner pan. My cheese cake was evenly cooked and perfectly flat from edge to edge. Removing it from the pan was no problem and if you line the bottom of the pan with some buttered parchment it makes it easy to remove your dessert from the bottom piece.

I also used it to make a quiche and when blind baking the crust I didn't get melted fat leaking from the bottom of the pan like I do with traditional pans.

Although this pan looks like it has the exact same dimensions as a standard 9" springform pan; 9" x 3" because the bottom of the pan when fully seated rests 1/2" above the bottom you get about an 8 cup capacity versus 9 cup in a traditional springform pan. So if your favorite recipes tend to fill up your pan I would size up to a 10" or plan for a separate pan for the overflow.

I love the pan and hope at some point they also offer it in a 4" size for individual portions.

Out of the 30 + Henckels I have this is my favorite knife. I use it everyday, 2 or 3 times a day. I keep reading about other knives being better than Henckel, but I haven't any complaints in my 40 years of using them. The secret with any knife is to run it across the rod several times, each time you use it. IF you do that, they will rarely need sharpening.

My only recommendation here, is to avoid using it in case you are a beginner in the kitchen. This knife is built to be used cutting while holding the vegetables / fruits / etc in your hand rather than on a cutting board.

Do yourself a favor, and in case you are not comfortable cutting while holding the subject in your hands, stick to normal knives.

Chicago Cutlery WSF 4-Piece Steak Set, Sheath Packaging

Chicago Cutlery WSF 4-Piece Steak Set, Sheath PackagingAny serrated steak knife I have ever used or owned has been better suited for sawing and hacking meat than for slicing, and most of the inexpensive steak knives are too flimsy to make a confident slice. For the past year or so I've had my eye on a beautiful set of Japanese steak knives, but at over $800 for eight I had yet to pull the trigger. In the interim, I decided to try these Chicago steak knives and was surprised by how much I like them. They have a solid weight to them, a stiff sharp blade, and a great overall balance and feel. The blade glides through steak and there is no wobble that you tend to get on most knives that go for under $200 for 4. It's an attractive design as well, and my only complaint is that the wood walnut handle is on the dry side. But at under $30 for four, oil the handles a few times and enjoy a quality knife at 1/10th the price of a comprable option.

I like a smooth blade steak knife as opposed to serated. The knife is sharp and the knife has a good feel. The only downside is the wood. I needed to take it to the garage and sand down the grain, as it was raised. This was before the wood ever even got washed. I gave it 3 coats of poly urethane. Even with that , not perfect, but acceptable. I would buy again.

I picked up this knife set at a big box store a few years ago. They are ok at best. The blades dull very quickly, I find I need to sharpen them after almost every use. The blades seem somewhat weak as well, the tips have bent on most of them.

Want Chicago Cutlery WSF 4-Piece Steak Set, Sheath Packaging Discount?

I like these knives especially their design. Very classy. Not as "beefy" (no pun intended) as I expected but definitely elegant for steak knives. They don't seem to hold their sharpness like I would expect from Chicago Cutlery but they do sharpen very well. Maybe they are a softer steel if they lose the blade but easily sharpen? Definitely would recommend for nicer dinners, not sure about using them for everyday though

OXO Good Grips V-Blade Mandoline Slicer

OXO Good Grips V-Blade Mandoline SlicerWe purchased this mandoline after it "won" the top spot on America's Test Kitchen's product reviews, over products that were much more expensive. America's Test Kitchen was considering safety features, as well as good slicing and convenience. It does have great safety features (which is a good thing, because those blades are SHARP!!!) And it works as well at slicing ripe tomatoes (which many mandolines mangle) as it does at slicing onions or potatoes. Great product, and yet another example of Oxo's great product design!

We loved the OXO mandoline and used it religiously for around 8 months. We received the present as a gift for our wedding and my wife, being Thai, used it liberally to make spicy papaya salad (som tum). The blades stayed sharp, the depth planer worked well, and we made french fries as well and it worked beautifully. One sad day came however when the depth adjuster fell apart and the slicer would no longer hold its depth. We looked into getting a replacement...

... until I noticed on the box that there's a lifetime warranty and replacement policy. We emailed OXO on December 24th, and on December 26th emailed an email that they were willing to replace our slicer with a new one. We received the replacement yesterdaybrand new and ready to fresh vegetables into small uniform pieces!

This is my first review, but I feel like I should publicize a good deed when it's done, especially from a corporation. Thanks OXO, from a frequent buyer.

Buy OXO Good Grips V-Blade Mandoline Slicer Now

I've used Borner V-Slicers for many years and I wanted to try a different machine, so I picked the OXO based on the cost and positive reviews.

Pros: Interchangeable blades; adjustable slice thickness; folding back foot

Cons: The blades are fussy to change; the julienne blades are not long enough for anything more than the thinnest slices

I want my mandoline to be fast and easy to use and clean. The Borner V-slicer fulfills this need, but it can make only 2 thickness slices. I liked the idea of the adjustable slice thickness of the OXO, but it seems to be of little practical value. Changing the julienne blades on the Borner is very fast and eash, but on the OXO, it is much more difficult and I feel that I'm in danger of cutting myself while I'm doing it. The OXO feels more precisely made than the Borner, but that feel doesn't translate into a better product. Cleaning the Broner is faster and easier than the OXO. Setting up and cleaning the OXO just seems like way too much of a project, and as a result, I find that I usually pick up a knife instead.

Update: I chop a lot of onions, so I've decided that the best way for me to use this machine is to leave it set up as a dedicated onion chopper, with the coarse multi-blate insert always in place. It's always ready to go and it's fairly easy to clean with a sink sprayer. Now that I'm not having to deal with changing the blades, I pick it up all the time for this tedious chore.

** UPDATE 02-16-2011 ** I noticed an additional item in the picture of the slicer. It's part of the accessory "Cubing Set" from Oxo (P/N 1136800), and is not included with the original purchase. It's designed to make larger cuts, is available from Oxo.com (not sure about Amazon) for $9.99 plus shipping. I've ordered one and will review it later.

Received my Oxo mandoline slicer yesterday and immediately tried it out. . . on one of the toughest vegetables to slice: a tomato.

PROS:

Some people's reviews have complained that the slicer was "sticky." That's caused by the dry plastic food guide. Dip the tip of your finger in olive or cooking oil and spread a very light film of oil on the ramp where the food to be cut slides down toward the cutting blade. Voila! No sticking or jerkiness.

As to the result with the (very ripe) tomato? Excellent cuts!

Also tried the crinkle blade on an unpeeled cucumber. Again, excellent results.

Haven't yet tried the other blades but, from the previous cuts, I assume the results will be the same.

Nor have I tried to use the food holder (used to protect your hand). But it seems well designed and should work okay.

After having tried two different economy slicers from Wal-Mart, and throwing them in the trash, I was worried about the results from this product. I shouldn't have worried. It's quite satisfactory.

Cleanup's not a problem; hot water and a spritz of liquid soap (as long as the food's not dried on it anywhere). Just be careful of the blade. And it's easier to use--and cleanup your work area after--if you put the mandoline on a sturdy cutting board while you work.

CONS

Blade changing is somewhat of a challenge. . . You'll need the instruction manual the first couple of tries. If you've misplaced yours, you can get one at: fantes(dot)com/slicers-mandolins.html

Want OXO Good Grips V-Blade Mandoline Slicer Discount?

America's Test Kitchens evaluated mandoline slicers and chose this one as their favorite. Features they liked:

'V' blade gets high marks: Models tested had straight blades (bad), or diagonal blades (better), or 'V' blades (best). All could slice hard things like potatoes & carrots, but only those with a 'V' blade could slice a tomato without destroying it.

Pusher handle keeps your fingers away from the blade

Slice thickness easy to adjust.

Comes with 3 blades that conveniently store in the bottom of the unit.

Good value for the price. (There was one product they rated higher, but it sells for over $300!)

Wusthof Ikon Care Kit for Blackwood Handles

Wusthof Ikon Care Kit for Blackwood HandlesWhen you spend a small fortune of good quality knives, most people will happily spend another $15 on a care kit.

You'd think that getting an original, manufacturer branded care kit would be a great idea, and the best way to care for your knives.

Here's the thing. For (depending on where you buy it) $10 to $15, you get a very poor quality cleaning cloth, and a tiny bottle of what appears to be semi-diluted mineral oil. My kit didn't arrive in the fancy Wusthof Ikon tin, it came in a simple unmarked blue cardboard box. The label on the bottle was stuck on poorly, black and white printed, and the cleaning cloth wasn't branded.

I'd estimate that that total cost of this kit to put together is something like 50 cents to a dollar.

Here's my advice for anyone wanting to spend the money.

1) Buy a nice bottle of mineral oil wood conditioner something like J.K. Adam's for about $6. J.K. Adams 8-Ounce Mineral Oil Wood Conditioner

Step one just gave you 8 ounces instead of one ounce.

2) You can use bounty kitchen towel to apply the oil and polish the wood. If you're inclined to use a re-usable cloth, any good quality microfiber cloth will do just fine.

As for directions use only a couple of drops of oil, rub it into the wood handles, then buff to a sheen. Very simple.

It goes without saying, mixing any kind of oil and very sharp knives is kinda dangerous. Please do be careful. I don't accept responsibility for your clumsiness, cuts, scratches or missing fingers I am perfectly capable of inflicting enough of those on myself !

I hope you get a chance to save your money :)

Cheers !

MIU France Maple Cutting Board with 7-Slot Knife Drawer, Natural

MIU France Maple Cutting Board with 7-Slot Knife Drawer, NaturalThese units are just as sturdy and nicely designed as suggested in the photos. However.... In my opinion the company that makes these is supplying Amazon with second quality cutting boards. I'm in the process of returning my second one.

The first one I received had obviously been returned by a previous customer and had a dinged up drawer. The top on that one had a few dark knots but they were tight though unattractive. Remember, the tops are made up of end grain pieces, so it's relatively easy to throw out the bad pieces before glue up. These are, however, packaged very very well. Triple boxed no less. The second one that I received appeared to be a fresh item but the inner box had a yellow sticky note stuck to it with some cryptic writing on it....hmmmm. Upon inspection this one had a perfect drawer but had a pithy knot on top that I consider not only unattractive but not food safe. It also had a large knot on the side of the board that was so large it had been filled with a yellow plastic filler. So back it goes.

Otherwise this is a really heavy duty, nicely designed unit. It measures 141/8 by 113/4 inches and holds 7 knives up to about eight inches long. It does have one odd quirk to the design though. The drawer, when fully closed, protrudes out the back of the assembly about 1/8 of an inch exposing the the very end of the knife slots and leaving them vulnerable to falling food scraps that would be very difficult to remove. If you push this tight against the counter back-splash, it will push the drawer out to be flush with the front of the cutting board. On my second unit, the front of the drawer lined up nicely with the cutting board above it, so if it had been a keeper, I would have just adjusted the slides to compensate for the 1/8 inch.

Bottom line....when I look at the picture of the unit in obviously first quality condition, I"m tempted to order a third one (third one's the charm they say). However, it is a hassle returning these, although kudos to Amazon for their excellent return policy and free shipping. As they are triple boxed, I know there's no way they can inspect them to find me a good one. So.......

Pro's..... Nice design with one small quirk

Very heavy duty

Reasonable price

Cons.....Poor quality control by manufacturer results in second quality appearing prod-

ucts rather than the first quality suggested in the photos.

Mine arrived damaged. Otherwise, the cutting board top is nice and solid. However, the drawer doesn't close all the way and certain of the newer cutlery doesn't fit inside. Also, very big and bulky. I opted to go for the Wustoff drawer knife tray that fits nicely in any kitchen drawer.

Waterford Glenridge 18/10 Stainless Steel 65-Piece Set, Service for 12

Waterford Glenridge 18/10 Stainless Steel 65-Piece Set, Service for 12The utensils have a very bright shinny finish, the knives have a blade of harder stainless steel than the 18/10. The knives appear seamless, this is nice feature. The raised pattern on the front of the handles is offset by a hollow back of the same dimension, in other words they are stamped from flat material.

We have grown to like the heavy weight and sculpted shape. The spoon bowls are actually bowls, the forks are actually arched, and the knives have a substantial handle weight. Very nice and comfortable to use.

I would rate this set very high in finish and design.

PRODUCT UPDATE; we have been using these utensils daily for almost 3 years and they still have no tarnish or spotting. As with any product used daily these now show everyday rubs and bumps. These go through the dishwasher every few days with no problem. We do use a quality dish machine soap and rinse any visible food off before washing. When possible lift out the silverware basket after the washing is done and let counter dry, this reduces the chance of tarnish forming.

Very nice weight. Good quality. Absolutely dishwasher safe [I use Cascade gel packs if that helps]Great price. Very happy with my purchase.

The Original BOTTLEFLY KNIFE Butterfly Knife Bottle Opener (Chrome)

The Original BOTTLEFLY KNIFE Butterfly Knife Bottle OpenerToo much bladeplay. Pin construction prevents me from tightening it. Almost doesn't function as a bottle opener. On the plus side, it is TSA friendly, and won't hurt your wallet too much if a TSA agent decides that it isn't.

I got this as a gag gift for my friend which he quite enjoyed. We both clumsily tried to open it up several times, it provided minutes, minutes I say! Of fun. Then we opened about 20 beers with it and it sturdily opened each and every one without issue. I recommend this gift to the guy who thinks he has everything, but clearly doesnt have a butterfly "knife" bottle opener.

This is my first/only bottlefly knife. It works as a bottle opener just fine, but the joints are very loose from day 1, allowing a lot of play in the "blade". In fact, so much so that it will sometimes strike the handle as you are trying to close it and stay in a semi-open position. The latch is also very loose when the blade is open, sometimes getting in the way when closing it. I had a regular balisong trainer, and that one served its purpose after weeks of practice much better than this one has from day 1.

Recommended for people who are balisong fans and beer drinkers and just want some novelty fun. Not recommended for people who actually want to practice balisong use.

Don't pass this one over, definitely a crowd pleaser at parties. Also a safer way to practice your butterfly knife skills.

Had two other similar ones fall apart on me before I went for this one, definitely the one to buy.

Stay-Fit Lunch 2 Go Container, EZ Freeze

Stay-Fit Lunch 2 Go Container, EZ FreezeI'm actually surprised people have rated this product fairly well; I think they haven't used their containers yet. The lunch container is a good size and will fit a sandwhich plus sides; unlike other small lunch containers. However the directions state to put your sandwhich in a plastic zip lock, so it won't get soggy from the condensation from the frozen cube. Well, I'm trying to reduce trash and not use so many sandwhich bags, so that was a little disappointing.

I used the container and made certain everything snapped on tightly and found every compartment had leaked into the other compartments. Worst of all the items leaked out of the container into my son's lunch bag -ugh a big mess. The items were not even that leaky: pasta, peanut-butter and apples (for dipping.)

The freezer lid is a little heavy either way (frozen or unfrozen.) The freezer cube is attached to the lid, so you have to freeze the whole lid, which is a little weirdbut certainly not terrible. The lid for the utensils is a little hard to open for me, so much more for a toddler.

All in all, its a decent container for dry goods mostly.

It's 5.99 at Target I was so surprised and annoyed because I had just ordered this same product on Amazon for 13.99

I gave this two stars because it seems to be well-made and not flimsy, unlike some similar containers I've seen from another brand. And I like that they incorporated a compartment for silverware.

I bought this item at a store, and it was packaged in a box, so I couldn't look inside to discover the following. (And also, I lost the receipt so I wasn't able to return it.)

1. The lid on the condiments/silverware compartment may not last very long. It makes an ominous cracking noise every time I open it.

2. The built-in ice pack is indeed built-in... as in attached to the inside of the lid. I assumed that it would pop in and out of the lid for easier washing, but it does not.

3. Forget about washing, the built-in ice pack also means you have no lid to put (LOOSELY) on top of your lunch when you heat it up. I usually do this to retain heat and moisture and prevent spatter.

4. The lid seems to be leakproof to the outside of the container, but it does not even slightly prevent leaking or transfer between compartments. To make best use of this container, you need three large dry food items. No sauces, juices, etc. Small items (peas, corn) will easily get jostled between compartments as well.

5. Typically, with other containers, you make the food and pack it into a container, refrigerate it, and then when you're ready to go to work, you pack the container with a freezer brick. I'm not really sure how that translates to this container, because you have to freeze the entire lid. So if you pre-pack your food, either you freeze the whole thing, in which case I'm not sure why you need the freezer pack in the lid at all (your food will take a a few hours to thaw even without the freezer pack), or else you've already packed your food in a DIFFERENT container and are transferring it to this one. Which seems like a waste of dirty dishes and effort to me. Or maybe this is a fresh sandwich which you have just prepared. I don't know because I pack my lunches way ahead of time.

It's too bad. This could have been a great product if the freezer gel pack had been removable, and if the compartments were better protected from leakage. People who actually do make their lunch each morning, rather than a few days ahead, might still find it useful.

Update: I wish Amazon would let me change the number of stars on my review to 1. I threw this item out because the problems above render it more trouble than it's worth. (I did keep the spork, though that was the only part worth keeping.) Space in my freezer is tight, and it's just ridiculous to have to put the entire bulky lid in there to freeze the gel pack. Seriously... if only the gel pack had been removable! It's too bad!!

I bought this product, then noticed how cheap the plastic looked, which concerned me, so I called the manufacturer and asked if it was BPA free. While the product is BPA free, it is made of polypropylene (as are all of the Stay-Fit products), which has been classified of moderate health concern, and according to the Environmental Working Group, there is "strong evidence" that it is a human immune system toxicant, and "expected to be toxic or harmful" to various organs.

I received this item within days of ordering it before I even thought it would be shipped. The item really does stay cold however, the lid does not seal to where the different compartments stay separate if you carry it slightly wrong on accident, it mixes together I wish this wasn't the case. Other than that GREAT DEAL seriously, in the store these things are $10 a item, you might as well just order it here seeing as it's less than $10 with shipping.

Wusthof Classic 10-Inch Hollow Edge Carving Knife

Wusthof Classic 10-Inch Hollow Edge Carving KnifeThis knife was part of a gift, and I am pleased to say that it exceeded all expectations. There may be other brands with equal utility, but I have not had the pleasure of using them. I am not shy about blasting Wusthof or Henckels for charging obscene prices when another brand offers the same quality for less, but like several specialty knives in the line, this one is a winner. Put your electric whiz bang in the closet, and amaze your guests with this useful (and large) gem.

Wusthof makes excellent knives and this model fully lives up to the famous Wusthof name!!! Cutting through food with this knife makes the phrase "cutting a hot knife through butter" applicable! This truly is an excellent knife and a great addition to the kitchen of anyone interested in food preparation.

I have started replacing my old (25 years) kitchen knives with Wusthof knives. All of them have been a delight, but this one is truly magnificent. I have discovered that with a knife this good I am MUCH better at carving meat and poultry than I thought I was.
