My wife had me order these knives since we just had a baby and wanted a full set for our kitchen. I received the package and to my disappointment 3 of the knives had chipped blade edges. The bagel knife was in horrible shape and the tomato knife had a large chip in the blade edge. We also bought the pink knife, Santoku knife, and it was totally fine so I'm going to blame the company that shipped this set because they didn't do a good product inspection before shipping. I'm returning the set but it will have to be a refund because it wasn't originally through Amazon... I'm crossing my fingers that the next set I buy isn't in as bad of shape as this one... I know the knives are awesome but I would like a new product, not a defective one...

Colourful? Yes. But that's about it. The blade is thick and not handy to cut through vegetables and fruits. Most of these blade shape are not useful. They are already store in a drawer and I had to buy another thin bladed knife for daily use. Oh well!

International 53-Piece American Bead Flatware SetWe received this set as a Christmas gift and we love it.

This flatware is beautiful, has a good weight and suits us perfectly.

We love the long tines on the dinner forks, the large soup spoons and the lovely serving set.

The steak knives were a welcome surprise.

We've used this set as our daily flatware, washed it in the dishwasher every day, and have had no problems so far.

These were purchased as a black Friday sale item at a considerable discount. They were worth that very discounted price; however, not worth much more. I bought them because they claim to come with 8 steak knives and I thought that would be great to have a set of steak knives that matched my flatware. The "steak knives" are very cheaply made with black plastic handles. I may use them in the kitchen to cut tomatoes, or in the garage to cut drop ceiling tiles, but they will never go on my dinner table too ugly. The soup spoons are also VERY large almost the size of a serving spoon. An OK set for $30.

Although it looked good in the picture, the actual pieces are flimsy. The large serving pieces are lightwieght with hollowed out handles, but the knives are some of the cheapest I've seen ... think clearance item bin. The blades are so thin you can easily bend them. The steak knives also have an extremely cheap look and handles. Amazon is taking them back (I get to pay shipping of course), but if they wouldn't then I'd have simply thrown them away.

Within 2 months of purchase, the knives have rust spots. They have not been abused and have been washed in the dishwasher. Lasting only 2 months is not acceptable. I can only give this silverware one star. Big waste of money.

I registered for Act 1 when I got married in 1978. We received four place settings and four ice tea spoons as gifts. Since then, I have added additional place settings and accessory pieces so I now have service for 10. The marriage did not last but the flatware certainly did.

I love these pieces and enjoy using them everyday. But buy carefully Act 1 was discontinued by Oneida a few years ago. If you are trying to build a new set, you may not be able to find enough pieces. Good luck! I hope you love it as much as I have.

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Four Star 6-Inch Stainless-Steel Slicing Knife

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Four Star 6-Inch Stainless-Steel Slicing KnifeI own several of the Henckel Four Star (but the Classic line is just as good) knives and have found little reason to succumb to marketing for higher priced knives. Using what I found to be a superior sharpening system (Edge Pro), the sharpness of my Henckel knives rivals the Wusthof and Shun lines (which I tried recently at W-S). Anything over 0.5 carbon is "high carbon" and will sharpen and hold an edge well; the VG-10 is 1.03 but in my opinion is overkill; I purchased one VG-10 and could not get it any sharper than my Henckels, so my son received a gift for his "kitchen".

I have yet found reason or purpose to buy beyond the following edge products (all Henckel but bread knife excluded):

-10" chef's knife

-6" chef's knife

-6" utility knife

-3.5" paring knife

-boning knife (not filet)

-take apart shears

-Granton edge carving knife and fork

+Forschner-Victorinox bread knife (sorry, Henckel)

Ok I did succumb to buying a matching fork, but when you have guests over for dinner, it looks nicer and the fork won't wear out. Anything beyond the regular handle is higher profit for the knife company; if you are holding you knife correctly, you won't need the higher cost handles.

I use both a smooth metal honing rod and a 1200 grit ceramic honing rod ($30 from Edge Pro unless you feel like paying someone more). I use the smooth metal prior to each use; ceramic once in a while, Edge Pro once every 3-6 months and even then only the two ceramic stones (unless the edge became bent on something).

Don't put in dishwasher...stuff bumps together, other dishware thrown on top of the knife, and could damage the edge.

Use only end grain cutting boards...I have truly found that it does not degrade the edge as much as plastic resin, or other types of wood cutting boards...Amazon has very good prices on Catskill brand. Read up on for more on cutting boards and try different ones out for yourself as have I.

Since I mentioned names, neither I nor my family have any financial interest or exchange with any of the companies referred to above. Just a well-informed consumer who continues to improve culinary skills by education and practice.

We bought this knife several years ago, and since then we have been buying other Four Star knives from open stock. This particular one is our favorite knife. We use it daily, usually several times. It keeps an edge, looks good, is comfortable in the hand, and is just the right size for most of our kitchen tasks. Very handy.

Some time ago we accidentally left it too near a burner on our electric range, and the handle melted horribly. Even so, we still use it in preference to any of our other knives including any of our other Henckel's knives. Guess what my wife will get for the next gift I buy her? Yep, this knife. Highly recommended.

OK, I have other Henckels knives, and like them all, but this is the knife that quickly became the one that I turn to first for all but the biggest slicing/chopping tasks. The size of this knife is just right. The blade is a good length for so many garden variety kitchen tasks, and the handle and heft just feel good and solid in the hand. The superior sharpness has been easy to maintain with an occasional swipe on the steel--even after much use. I like and use it so much that I have started giving it as a gift item. Everyone loves it.

Ergo Chef ER40 Pro-Series Knife

Ergo Chef ER8 Pro-Series Knife, 8-InchThis is a fairly large, quality knife with an interesting (and, I think, very functional) angle between the blade and the handle. This is not a "hollow ground" knife, which would have a very fine (and relatively easily dulled but extremely sharp edge, like a straight razor); it is perhaps more appropriately referred to as a "Granton", or maybe "scalloped edge" knife (the last designation referring to the ground-out indentations that run along the edge). These indents are called "hollow grounds" by the manufacturer, and they do seem to effectively assist with discouraging food from sticking to the sides of the blade as you're cutting, which is what the manufacturer claims they will do.

I'm no connoisseur of knives. I've always been mostly a 'cheap set of serrated knives' kind of guy, with the possible exception of a Chinese cleaver I bought when I was in my twenties, which I've since found to be of limited utility. But I was intrigued to give this chef's knife a try, and so far I've been very pleased with the results.

I'm no gourmet chef either, but I do like to cook, and experiment with different dishes (mostly made-up or plagiarized from somebody else's recipe book) and I've historically done the bulk of the cooking in our family. More and more my wife and I have tended toward meals of fresh fruits, grains, etc. We'll make a large salad of about 1/2 greens and the rest fresh fruit, nuts and whatever we have we can add: big enough that we'll get at least a couple of dinners and a couple of lunches out of it. We love melons, fresh pineapple, berries, kiwi, apples, pears, mangos, etc. Needless to say, we spend a lot of time cutting up fruit.

This knife has been a champ with all the fruits and vegetables that go into our dishes. Mincing garlic, chopping onions, slicing carrots, quartering strawberries: no problem. I really like the way it makes quick work of slicing up a whole watermelon (the wife's favorite). Where I used to pick out my longest serrated-edge knife and try to saw my way through the rind, then switch to a smaller knife to cut the meat away from the rind and into cubes, this one knife does it all, and quite effortlessly. I would have thought the knife was too big for the latter parts of the job, but it's so nicely balanced that it feels quite comfortable doing the finer work as well as the heavy duty stuff.

We also regularly buy eight or so boneless/skinless chicken breasts at a time (our grocer sells them every day for $1.99 from behind the meat counter), immediately bake and freeze them, then pull out one or two at a time when we want to make a stir-fry, pesto, jambalaya, curry or whatever dish, or add pieces heated with seasoning to add to our salad. So I'm all about a minimal amount of defrosting on a quick microwave cycle, then cutting the still mostly-frozen breasts into pieces and getting on with what I'm doing. This knife makes that job sooo much easier than any knife I've used before, and gives me the flexibility to get the meat cut up and into the pan in much less time.

I've noticed a few times that the tip is really sharp, but I've not actually cut myself with this knife, and I feel confident already in using it (I have a nasty scar on the side of one finger where my favorite serrated knife pierced it). The handle of the knife is super comfortable: absolutely smooth, with no hint of a rough edge where the (full length) tang and handle parts and rivets come together. I really do like the angle of the handle to the blade: it feels very natural and well-balanced, especially for such a large tool. The forged German stainless is flawless in appearance and cleans up so easily. It seems like there's an awful lot of cutlery out there to choose from, designed for all sorts of specific uses. As a moderately-priced, quality-built utensil that fills a lot of needs, I highly recommend giving this knife by Ergo Chef a try.

As a chef I need and use a good knife. I have purchased many knives over the years of varying qualities and prices. I have also recently had some issues with carpal tunnel like symptoms.

The ergo chef knife has helped me with some wrist issues. It provides a smoother and more fluid cut and seems to buffer some of the negative consequences brought on by repetitive motions inherent when cooking.

I also find that the blade stays sharper longer.

The rivets on all of the handles are not ground flush. They stick up. I have purchased and used Chicago Cutlery Knives for over 30 years and never seen inferior quality such as these. I wasn't allowed the 30 days after I received it. The 30 days from the date of purchase was used. It is still new and in the orginal package. Please advise. I would like replacements. Thanks, John

This knife completed my set of Chicago Cutlery knives. They are all walnut signature forged, the key word being forged. Note: there are others from Chicago Cutlery that have "walnut" in their name, they are stamped, not forged and they are not as good in every way. But, the walnut signature forged offer great balance, comfortable grip, are nice to look at and a very good buy as well!

The Modern Space series by Taiwon Metal is a simple yet lovely pattern with a simple rounded end. It's sleek and simple design make it a perfect for either restaurant use or to accompany intricate and beautiful china and crystal. This set is more than good enough quality for the average home, and it seems sturdy enough to hold up even in restaurants for many years. It does need occasional polishing but doesn't seem to easily scratch or bend.

The weakest part of this set is the absence of a few pieces: Appetizer Knife, Butter Spreader , and Bouillon Spoon (all of which are offered in the Baguette design) and a Fruit Fork, Fruit Knife, Fruit/Citrus Spoon, Oyster Fork (with three prongs), and Salt Spoon which are not offered in any of the Taiwon Metal patterns. But that only highlights exactly how perfect this set is for multi-course meals or restaurants with different dishes. One can easily built a 7-12-course meal with this set.

Wusthof Gourmet 4-1/2-Inch Serrated Utility

Wusthof Gourmet 4-1/2-Inch Serrated UtilityI have had this knife for several years about five. I refer to it as my "favorite" knife. I absolutely abuse it (run it through the dishwasher practically ever other day; leave it in water)and it's still the best knife I have. It's wonderful on tomatoes, all types of fruit, and cutting breads. I can't say enough about it. Buy this knife.

This is probably my second favorite (or at least, second most used) knife in the kitchen. If I could only have one knife, it would certainly be my full sized cook's knife. However, I probably reach for this knife more, especially when it comes to smaller, more common jobs. (Slicing a baguette, making a sandwich, light prep work, etc.)

The knife is stamped steel as is consistent with the rest of Wusthof's Gourmet line. The blade has a wonderful combination of flexibility and rigidity. I have no problems filleting or butterflying with this knife. I'd almost call this knife agile. If you fillet, pocket, or butterfly a lot, I'd prefer a Wusthof Gourmet knife to one of Wusthof's forged knives. I have examples of both, and prefer the thinner, stamped Gourmet blades for jobs that require flexibility.

The serrations are on the right, or correct, side of the knife (if you're right handed that is.) Serrations on the right side mean that the cut portion is pushed away from the larger piece as you cut through. So many manufacturers put the serrations on the left side of the knife. This is a subtle yet important distinction. If the serrations are on the wrong side of the blade, you will find that the blade has a tendency to pull towards you and to get stuck. This leads to ugly, uneven cuts.

The knife's tang is full length, though not full depth. It's not that the tang has been tapered to reduce weight or change balance. Rather, the tang itself is only half as deep as the handle itself is. In use, this doesn't matter much. However, if you're a stickler for aesthetics or snob appeal, you should know that this knife won't match the rest of your full tang set. Wusthof (nor any of the other major manufacturers) make a rounded tip, full tang, serrated knife in this size, so I am quite content to compromise here.

I am quite pleased with this knife, but honestly, I wouldn't buy it a second time. (Alright, truthfully, a third time. I already have two.) If I were in the market for a rounded tip, serrated knife, I'd almost certainly buy the Victorinox Cutlery 4-1/2-Inch Wavy Edge with Round Tip Steak Knife as a set or individually. I find that the Victorinox cuts just as well, but is nearly 20% of the price. Neither knife is (really) full tang, and both are stamped steel. The only real advantage that the Wusthof has is in snob appeal, and that's just not something I care to indulge in. A small advantage of the Wusthof is that it does seem to resist water spots better than the Victorinox knives.

This might come across as petty, but the blade is 12cm which is just under 4 3/4". So the blade is a hair longer than advertised....big whoop. Other than that this knife is everthing I'd expect from Wusthof in sharpness and utility. I really like this blade size because as a bread baker I often need a serrated blade but not one the length of a traditional bread knife. This would also make a great knife for cutting baguettes for service. This is a gift mom would actually use (probably every day). A plastic blade guard would be a nice addition.

This knife makes a fabulous steak knife. The serrated edge is very sharp and grips steak well, and the 4 1/2" size is just the right length. It's also great for tomatoes. My mom has a whole set of KitchenAid steak knives, and will only use this.

I bought this item this month and have used it for the first time this week. The knife feels balanced and looks nice.

I have some other knives in my kitchen, but a good serrated knife can not be replaced. I wanted a good serrated knife for slicing bagels and other breads. This will do nicely for that job. I was concerned about a 4.5" knife working well enough. This is not an issue.

I have even used it to slice onions and other veggies. Last night I used it to slice the end off of a garden hose! It cut right though the reinforced hose.

This will become my 2nd favorite knife in the house. The #1 "fav" is my kyocera ceramic blade that I have had for several years. Drop that fragile knife and all you have will be nice memories; this Wusthof knife is tuff.

Joseph Joseph Large Cut and Carve Plus Multi-Function Chopping Board, Redthe concept was what I was looking for...a cutting board that you could carve meat on and not have juices run off onto the counter. The board did accomplish this, but the material of the cutting board is a soft rubber and the knife marks were so deep I had to review my order to make sure I had a "cutting" board. If the deep marks do not bother you, then it will accomplish not letting juices flow off and onto the counter.

Perfect for what I need this for, great colour and very well made! The anchors to hold a roast in place for slicing are very sharp and I am sure will do a great job.

I love the fact that this cutting board does not slide around like all my others. The design is so simple, I do not know why they just got around to this now. The one side has a section to hold onto roasts or cheese to make carving a snap. It also lets juices run off into a channel instead of all over the counter. The other cutting boards went into storage in the pantry. This one stays out on the counter.

I will be tossing two other cutting boards which I have used for cutting things which either slide around on a board or release too many juices and ooze onto my counter. This is wonderful! I first saw it at a relative;s house,and she said that she uses it all the time because of its versatility. The sharpish pegs on one side keep our ham, roasts, and chicken in place, and the other side is smooth for cutting anything else. The surface of the board slants to one long side, and I had not realized until I bought it that it does the same on the other side. This is great for collecting the juices, crumbs, or sliced and diced things off to one side. There is no down-side to this product.

Like the other review mentioned, this fork (I received the 14-inch size) is quite heavy -even more so than some other, more modern designs. The tines are sharp, the wood is real, and if you're looking for a heavy-duty, solidly-built carving fork, you really can't go wrong.

My one complaint: The rivets that hold the wood to the metal aren't all flush with the surface. It's a very minor complaint, but for the price I paid, I can't complain at all!

I fry steaks, chops, anything, thanks to this thing. I like my meat rare inside and golden and crispy outside. The trick for this is to have extremely hot olive oil, put in your steak slowly, leave for three or four seconds, then lift, wait for the oil to get ultra hot again, and put it in again, switching sides. This method will deliver you the PERFECT steak or chop, but the hot oil can jump on your hand. This oversized fork will avoid any oil on your skin.

Update International KGE-08 Stainless Steel Forged Cook's Knife, 8-1/2-InchAs a gift for one of my staff I purchased this knife. He has one at home that was given him by a family member and he mentioned it a few times so I bought one.

It is a heavy knife, but that does enable some smooth cutting and in our American way of knife use effectively bashes through whatever you put in the cutting board. Nice and sharp, but already after just a month or so has dings in the blade. Maybe from mishandling.

Initially, I had purchased a very (in my opinion) expensive electric knife ($65) which lasted all of, what? Two months? Yup, two months. Since I couldn't really afford to drop that kind of cash so soon again on an electric knife I got the Black & Decker EK700, not expecting it to last for very long because on average I bake at least a dozen loaves of bread a week, half of which are heavy wheat or rye breads.

As of today, February 28, 2008, I'm editing this review to make this comment: I used this knife for about a year before I posted my original review and it is STILL WORKING! Honestly, how can you beat that? I am really amazed at how sturdy it is. With the use I put it through I would have expected it to last no more than six months. But after all this time, with steady, hard use, it's running almost as well as the day I bought it. Great knife, unbelievably sturdy, easy to clean -frankly, I can't think of anything bad to say about it. Highly recommended.

I have always used electric knives to slice all the roasts which I cook, including, beef, pork, chicken and turkey. I have gotten tired of using knives and becoming dull, tearing the meat, and not working for more than 3 months. I bought this knife on the advise of the American Test Kitchens stating that this knife was one of the best. They are right. This is the best knife that I have used. I carved the Thanksgiving Day Turkey with it and it sliced that turkey like butter. No tearing or fighting with the blades to cut the meat. It fits in my hand like a glove, easy to run. I also like the safety switch on the on button. Push the slide button to the left,then press the on switch and it stays on until you release the on switch, when you are all done with the slicing, you press the slide button to the right and it locks the unit so it cannot be turn on. Blades go into the unit easily. Best little unit I have ever used. I would highly recommend this unit to anyone who uses an electric knife.

Arthritic hands make for difficult handling of tools. My former electric carving knife works just fine for spouse and grown children, but I was unable to keep it running long enough to make a cut. This implement allows me to depress and keep depressed the cutting trigger. I've carved some fairly tough meats and some very tender cuts. The knife has worked equally well for both. I haven't yet tried it on anything frozen. The blades are easy to attach and detach. They clean easily with a soapy sponge, and have survived the dishwasher well, too.

If I have any complaints, it would be that the knife is rather heavy and my hands tire easily when using it; being tied to a cord restricts its use to the preparation area, rather than the table; and (although I thoroughly understand the reason for it) having to hold down the trigger continuously is tiring. That third reason has no validity . . . if the knife is dropped, it doesn't need to keep cutting anything it comes in touch with!

All in all, this is a very satisfactory tool, especially for persons with problem hands.

Great product at a resonable price. This knife is comfortable in your hand, (left or right.) It cuts smoothly without applying undue preasure. The offset blade allows cutting through to bottom of bread or meat without racking your knuckles or repositioning your grip. I keep an electric knife plugged in on my counter for all kinds of cutting. If this one ever wears out, I'll be buying another just like it.

I have had several electric knives over the years but this is the worst. It has a small gap between the blades and this allows the meat that you are cutting get between the blades rendering it useless. I have only used it on roast chicken/turkey so I cannot comment on how it is with bread. Others seem to have no problem cutting bread. But if you want to use it on poultry, buy something else.
