Victorinox 125th Anniversary Limited Edition 7-Inch Santoku Knife with Granton Edge

Victorinox 125th Anniversary Limited Edition 7-Inch Santoku Knife with Granton EdgeI bought this knife instead of the other Victorinox 7" granton-edge santoku knife (Victorinox Cutlery 7-Inch Granton Edge Santoku Knife, Black Fibrox Handle) because this one is advertised in the Amazon product description as being a forged knife, and it's not (Same with the 8" chef's advertised as 125th anniversarybuy the regular one!). The linked knife is the exact same (except for the special-edition "jubilee etching" on this one) knife, but a couple bucks cheaper right now. Go by the description of the other knife and buy whichever one is cheaper. It is an awesome knife though! It is a bit light (which as a girl with small hands, I prefer) but feels very balanced, the blade is very straight and high-quality. Super sharp right out of the packaging. Some people complain about that the fibrox handles look or feel cheap, of course they're not the most expensive looking but they don't look cheap to me. I have seen and felt much lower quality handles as well as more expensive, high quality handles and I have no problem with fibrox, I like it a lot actually. So the only reason I gave this knife 4 instead of 5 stars is for the misleading product description, which thinking back is probably my fault for not realizing right away that Victorinox wouldn't put the fibrox handle on a forged knife, but oh well, they were the same price when I bought it so I didn't lose anything.

I have a lot of experience as a cook, mostly as at home but also time spent in the restaurant kitchen. When my church decided to remodel and restock its kitchen, I was asked to made the recommendations on specific brands (of small appliances, cookware, knives) to buy. I relied on a bunch of reviews, including those in Cooks Illustrated and Consumer Reports, and bought a handful of highly-rated knives to test. The Victorinox was the winner, hands down. Here's why:

-exceedingly comfortable handle, slightly indented to accommodate your finger tips, usable by all three testers (a member of the church's youth group, a petite woman and a 6' guy).

-exceedingly light weight and good balance. Some of the knives were blade-heavy, hard to control and tiring for the occasional-cook to use. Some felt wretchedly uncomfortable in your hand. The Victorinox was feather light and easy to manage.

-exceedingly sharp blade that worked well on a variety of cutting tasks.

-a ridiculously low price. Some of the finalist knives were over $100 a piece. Victorinox was doing the same quality of work for a quarter (in some cases less) of the price.

We ended up buying several Victorinox models -serrated slicer, santoku, small chef's -and have been very pleased with each.

This is sharp from mfg. We use this brand comercially, have knives 3x more expensive, not better. Doesn't hold edge as long as very best, but I don't feel guilty hitting it w/ a steel.

This Knife absolutely blew me away. Given the price and the fact that it had a handle that was made out of a material that I was unfamiliar with...well lets just say I wasn't sure what to expect. Dont get me wrong I knew it would be nice as it was from Victorinox and they know knives. With that being said I had absolutely no clue just how nice these knives really are. To say I was pleasantly surprised would be a massive understatement.

First and foremost I absolutely love the handle. The patented Fibrox material really is outstanding. Its a bit lighter than what I am used to but that doesn't take anything away from this knife or the handle. It simply took a little getting used to. The best way I can describe the fibrox material is to say that its like a soft sandpaper. It basically has a gritty/soft texture that makes gripping the knife extremely comfortable. There is just no chance of your hand slipping even if your hand is wet or covered with oil. The more I used it the more I came to prefer the Firbox handle and its to the point now where its my handle of choice. Its just an outstanding material that is absolutely perfect for knives.

The other thing I was concerned about was the knifes edge. I have purchased knives in this price range before and the biggest problem I ran into was the knife just couldn't hold an edge very long at all. Well this is just another aspect of this knife that blew me away. Not only was this knife sharp as a razor out of the box, it retained its edge for a very long time, In fact this knife could stand toe to toe with some knives that are 2-3 times this price. Its really quite amazing. It was also extremely easy to sharpen it right back to its original sharpness.

Overall the knife has an outstanding feel to it. Again its a bit lighter than what I was used to but again that isn't a bad thing. I grew accustomed to it very quickly and the weight is certainly not a detriment to the knives overall performance. Its important to note that when I say light, I don't mean light as in cheap feeling. It doesn't feel cheap, in fact quite the contrary.

Bottom line This knife really blew me away. It could easily stand toe to toe with knives that are 2-3 times its price. Given its price I really cannot give this knife a higher recommendation. Victorinox has really created an outstanding knife at an AMAZING price.

5 stars and then some!!

This Santoku was quite a nice knife. The fibrox handle ensures a good grip even when dealing with a lot of meats or liquids. The blade stayed honed for quite a few days of uses, but it should be honed on a steel weekly at the very least. I did think the knife to be a little bit too light though, and I'm not so sure the grantons did anything to prevent food from sticking to the blade.

Le Creuset Stoneware Classic Oval Dish, Cherry, Set of 3

Le Creuset Stoneware Classic Oval Dish, Cherry, Set of 3I am apparently developing a bad Le Creuset habit (in multiple colors no less). I purchased a black rectangular dish (with a bonus mini dish that doesn't get used much because of the barbie-doll size) about 7 years ago. It got to the point where it was the only dish I wanted to use, so I went to a Le Creuset outlet a couple years back and found a purple set (one square, one oval) that was on a good clearance. When I finally had to pull out the Pyrex and Corning Ware and wipe the dust off before use (for a large Thanksgiving feast at my home last week), I decided it was time to get serious and have enough Le Creuset I can ditch the other stuff.

The Le Creuset:

1. Cooks food better, more evenly at a lower oven temperature.

2. Is a breeze to clean up when I'm finished cooking.

3. Is beautiful to use as a serving dish without having to transfer the food.

4. Keeps the food warmer much longer than the Pyrex or Corning Ware.

5. Lasts a lifetime. My mother bought her first pieces in 1982 and she is still using them at least weekly 30 years later. My seven year old black dish looks just as beautiful as the two year old purple one and both of those look as good as the red ones that arrived today.

I am going to keep a couple of French Corning Ware pieces with lids (just in case) until I can purchase a few Le Creuset cookware with lids. But I am happily going to donate my Pyrex pieces to a relative who hasn't had the privilege of using Le Creuset. Maybe after my set is complete, I will corrupt her with a gift of a Le Creuset baking dish of her own.

Great products, even for Christmas presents (which can be a dangerous choice). Really nice size selection and superb quality. Go for it!

J.A. Henckels 13-Slot In-Drawer Knife Tray

J.A. Henckels 13-Slot In-Drawer Knife TrayIf Tim Allen got into cooking and cutlery the way he salivates after handyman tools, he'd be grunting his "can't-wait-to-get-my-hands-on-it" love song. This thing's a monster. Big. Beautiful. Solid. Just like your knives. The only way to go if you can't bring yourself to give up counter space for a knife block, or prefer the open slide of a knife drawer to getting fallen crumbs, hidden dust, and possibly grime (ugh!) out of those narrow knife block slots.

One of the most practical things you'll ever purchase--even if it seems like a "luxury" item now or something you'll "eventually" get (uh-huh)--paying for good knives but failing to pay for proper storage (I discovered the hard way) is like buying a good bicycle then leaving it outside to rust. At this affordable price, consider it a "knife" purchase--one that you don't have but can't do without. Even if you're just discovering the value of high quality cutlery, this knife drawer not only is a good investment for all subsequent purchases, but also it lets you know how many you do and don't have, keeps them all together and, if need be, you can put everything in one place then secure it with a child-proof mechanism. It makes a great gift when you'd like to give something unique but practical and affordably priced.

Another advantage is the opening for the knife hone: It's centered and can act as a dividing mark. If you're a "two knife set" household like we are (knives are like shoes -they tend to wear and adjust to the user), then each person can have one half of the tray (3 short, 3 long slots each). The depth of the slots keep the handles easy to grasp without too much wriggle room, the color of the wood is as pictured, there are no rough edges or splinters, and the double (not single) Henckels logo appears prominently on the base.

Before you buy, however, measure the place you intend to put it, including any offset space you have to account for in sliding it into the drawer; if you're going to place it on a shelf, make sure that your cupboard door will close. (See measurements in product description.)

Keep it well-maintained according to manufacturer's directions and the feeling of sliding open a drawer and seeing this finely crafted object safely cradling your finely crafted full-tang fully-forged bolstered collection, well, .... it's just everything you hoped it "wood" be. With free shipping, you can't go wrong.

This in-drawer knife tray was absolutely perfect. It fit my drawer exactly. I didn't want a big block taking up counterspace and this fit in the drawer where I wanted the knives to go. It arrived in a timely manner and with the free shipping it was the lowest price out there. And beliveve me, I looked!

A much better alternative to knife blocks that usually occupy valuable counter space and that are impossible to clean. This one is designed well, so it can store all sorts of knives. My wife and in-laws loved it! Do I need to say more?

Frees counter space by putting knives into a drawer, while protecting fingers from sharp edges...a great idea in a quality-built product. Knives drop horizontally into the slots, which I find easier than sticking them pin-cushion style into a counter block. Enough room here for all your kitchen and steak knives.

Want J.A. Henckels 13-Slot In-Drawer Knife Tray Discount?

1) Will not hold small knives with larger than Henckels handles (such as Chicago Cuttlery).

2) No provision for meat fork.

3) Could be a couple inches wider.

Other than the above, still a pretty nice item for a person needing more counter than drawer space.

Timberline Knives 8055 Ceramic Vegetable PeelerThe one I bought was sold buy "knifecountryUSA" leading me to think it was made in the USA so I purchased it. Big made in China sticker right on the box. Too bad. Other than that it's pretty difficult to discern the blade material, it flexes like plastic, I don't think ceramic flexes. Ginkgo President 5-Piece Stainless Steel Flatware Place Setting, Service for 1

Ginkgo President 5-Piece Stainless Steel Flatware Place Setting, Service for 1This is a well finished, high quality set. Each piece is well formed and well balanced. Obviously the knife handle is different: if you're used to holding your knife between your thumb and index finger, that will no longer work. Instead you have to hold the knife in the palm of your hand with your last three fingers curled underneath, your thumb to the side, and your index finger on top pushing down. In this position it is extremely comfortable.

Firstly, I bought these for a much lower price than what they are now, so I consider them a good value. If I had paid $20 a set..well, I just probably would not have paid that.

They are nice though. They have a very smooth finish that sheds water very well (nice when washing), and they are holding up well so far (not quite a year). They are not heavy duty strength or anything, but they are not cheap. Just don't use them in inappropriate ways.

I ordered this set, thinking it was a serving for 5. I should have read more carefully, as it only came with two forks, one knife, two spoons. I like the quality, burt I returned it because I didn't feel as though it was worth 20 bucks for ONE SERVING. Just don't want others to order thinking it was a full serving set for 5!

Victorinox Forged 2-Piece Santoku Knife Starter Set

Victorinox Forged 2-Piece Santoku Knife Starter SetThese knives, for the 3 weeks I have been using them, have been a healthy start to my cutlery collection. The handles feel very natural and they cut through anything without problem. My one gripe would be that the gratton edge on the santoku knife does not do its job as well as it should, but, regardless, this set is a perfect affordable choice for anyone.

Great weight and ergonomics, sharp blade. The larger Santoku and the smaller paring knife are pretty much all you need 95% of the time in the kitchen.

Messermeister Park Plaza Chef's Knife

Messermeister Park Plaza 8-Inch Chef's KnifeFriend taught me to chop using this knife. It was comfortable in my hand and I was able to chopped easily

Great knife it was recommended to me by a friend who is a chef and I love it. I have had mine for a few years and it makes cooking so much easier. I have bought them for gifts for at least 5 of my friends and they all love them. The utility knife and paring knife in this series are also great.

Buy Messermeister Park Plaza Chef's Knife Now

PROS:

This is a good general-use knife and is sharp enough to chop most vegetables and meats... It also has a pretty good and comfy handle.

Easy to resharpen and remove dings on a whet stone due to soft metal.

CONS:

Very flimsy and soft metal is used in the knife's construction. I have seen this knife's blade dent because of cutting a simple thing such as a prailine (which a standard Whustof or Henkels would not do for not much more money).

OVERALL:

This is absolutely an ameture housewife knife. NOT good for industrial work at all. It is, though, a decent "back-up" knife if there is something to hack-up that you dont want your more expsneive knives (assuming the reader works in an industrial kitchen) to touch or possibly get damaged.

My advice, pay an extra 20 bucks and buy a low-mid range Whustof or Henkels... something that is not stamped steel and has a full tang.

I hope this helps.

Perhaps a bit difficult to put on, but this seems consistent with the secure fit once attached. Sizes from paring to large chef's work the same.

Hampton Forge Silversmiths Wind Mirror 12-Piece Flatware Set

Hampton Forge Silversmiths Wind Mirror 12-Piece Flatware SetThis set is a a little unusual because it skips the traditional soup spoon and dessert fork that most sets like to include. I don't have much use for those things myself, so it fills my needs perfectly. For a cheap dinner set for a studio apartment it's perfect. The pieces are a little light so you can tell they aren't particularly expensive, but the design looks great and I think they'll still be fairly durable. The packaging was very nice as well.

For someone in a small apartment this set is about perfect. If you live with roommates, or your family, or entertain frequently, you'll probably want a larger set. For the price, however, it's excellent in terms of looks and feel.

EDITI've now owned the set for 4 months. The knives have developed a bit of rust where the blade connects to the handlejust a thin line at the seam, on all four of the knives. This doesn't change my score, but if you or your guests will be disturbed (and you'll have to be looking closely) you might want to invest in some more expensive silverware. Aside from this flaw, the set is still performing well for me and is still a good value at the price.

I bought the product a week ago, and it started rusting already. It's a cheap and low-quality product. I am really disappointed.

We bought this set to use at work, but we clean the utensils in our dishwasher at home. We have had some trouble with rusty or other funny spots appearing after washing, even after the first few uses. This could be partially due to our dishwasher detergent, which we didn't realize contained citrus. Apparently this is a no-no, and we have switched, but it still seems to happen occasionally. If you hand-wash, this probably wouldn't be a problem.

My wife also believes the utensils have a 'metallic' taste; I haven't really noticed.

Otherwise, this flatware is OK. The food makes it to my mouth most of the time, so...

Sanelli 312618 Premana Professional 7 Inch Cooks Knife

Sanelli 312618 Premana Professional 7 Inch Cooks KnifeI have purchaced two of these knives after seeing them used on Iron Chef.. Wanted them to use at home to save my "good" knives.. These things are great.. Stamped but great edge to the blade.. Handles dont slip.. I would buy more..

Not a whole lot that I can say other than that these knives are pretty amazing for the price. I absolutely hate the majority of professional cutlery out there as it all seems the same. The rubberized handle makes these INCREDIBLY stable, and despite the bulk, this is the fastest chef/cook's knife I have ever used. Great if you like a smaller knife as I do, but surprisingly you don't seem to sacrifice any power in the blade at 7 inches. This is more powerful then my other Santoku and Chef's knives, and I haven't had to sharpen it yet.

I hope Amazon continues to offer these as they are EXTREMELY hard to find, but I intend to collect the entire set.

This is a top quality professional spatula.

This product makes life easier in the kitchen. Traditionally it is a fish turner, but I use it for getting anything dense out of a pan. The end of it is angled to facilitate removal, while it is very thin and sharp enough to cut a crust from the pan. The piece is also very flexible which helps with that first piece. All of these features are essential to the wide variety of use possible. I consider this a multi-tasker that will always have a place in my kitchen. With this one you can forget the thick, firm spatulas, except for the BBQ.

I found out after the fact that this was recommend by Burt Wolf in the New Cooks Catalogue. They gave it a very favorable review, but I would say that they underrated it. That is how much I like it.

I recommend this piece.

Schmidt Brothers Cutlery, SBOMO06, Bonded Teak 7 Inch Mofotoku Knife

Schmidt Brothers Cutlery, SBOMO06, Bonded Teak 7 Inch Mofotoku Knifei have already reviewed other pieces from this companyso far, all have been impressive and well-made. this forged(not stamped) knife holds a sharp edge and cuts easily. i like that it is somewhat lighter than my german counterparts that always feel like i'm wielding an axe or something heavy. don't get me wrong, my wusthof and henckels are beautiful knives, it just seems after a long prep in the kitchen me arm and hand could use a rest. with this (and the other schmidt bros. cutlery) i get the same ease of cutting, better control, and with less effort. this is a nice knife and for the price hard to beat in todays crowded market. try this or a chefs knife and see if you don't agree how much of a bargain these are.

Not just a great knife for the money, a great knife. I'm not a professional chef, but a pretty serious home cook, and this is one of the best knives I've ever used. I once had one of the high-end Henckels sets, and this is every bit their equal. Good weight, comfortable handle that fits naturally in the hand, and a high-quality blade. This is a pretty serious knife with good looks, proper balance, and a design that just feels right when you use it. Part of the appeal was that this series has some nice cheese knives, however, they are very hard to track down and you probably won't get a good deal on them. I'm a little disappointed that Schmidt Bros. don't carry full stock of their own knives (as of this post).

The teak had a dull rustic look when I got it instead of that orange glow they show in all their photographs. Keep in mind, wood is a living thing and you will want to oil the handle every so often when it starts looking thirsty. In most cases, this results in a darker looking handle.

I ordered this knife, and a 6" Chef's knife to try, before replacing our aging and worn knives. My first surprise, was the full tang, keeping you hand and fingers away from harm. The second, the knife took a wonderful edge, and holds that edge. The slight rocker of the blade makes dicing a charm. Dollar for Dollar, I doubt you can find a better knife.

Under Cabinet Cookbook Holder

Under Cabinet Cookbook HolderMy wife said she wanted one of these for her birthday. I found some boring looking plain vanilla clear acrylic models (from other companies and websites) but I thought this one generally looked more interesting, and also matched our wooden cabinets better.

It works great, and looks great. The installation was easy, and it comes with some spacers that help make sure it will screw in even to thin shelves (our bottom shelf is quite thin the screws would have protruded up into the cabinet without the spacers). The only hard part of the installation is working upside down to do the pilot hole drilling, and then holding the unit flush while you put in the screws. If you have 2 people this would be a piece of cake, but I did it myself and it took about 10 minutes of holding screws in place while putting in the other screws they kept wanting to drop out. I managed to get it installed before her birthday passed and that is a first for me.

Anyway, my wife loves it, and thats all that matters. If you'll be installing it yourself a magnetic screwdriver might be a lifesaver. Highly recommended.

I recently bought this and think it is worthwhile but thought I would mention a few things I wish I had known before purchase. Overall the holder is sturdy and attractive. It is a light maple color and it is 2.25 inches thick when the clear plastic spacers are used so you do see the front and hinges when folded underneath the cabinet. It is made of IKEA/WalMart grade glued particle wood with veneer. The clear plastic cover thats folds over the bottom half of the cookbook is useful. The length between hinges is just under 18 inches so the book width x 2 + spine width of your favorite cookbook should be less than that. It would fit something about 13 inches tall max but with a 11 inch tall book I have to bend over to read the top 2 inches of the page (I'm 5'11''). When folded down it is 7 inches below the front of the cabinet face and the front of cookbook holder is 9.5 inches below the cabinet face. I consider myself a fairly handy person and it took about 20 minutes to put in by myself with quite a bit of contorting to get underneath the cabinet, would have been a lot easier with a helper. Overall this seemed a bit expensive but unless you are willing to make it yourself, I couldn't find a similar less expensive one to buy.

I bought this for my husband after looking at cookbook holders for months. I absolutely made the right choice this thing is so handy. I love that it folds up but is never far away when I need it. If you regularly use cookbooks, you need this holder.

This is a wonderful place for a book holder...eye level, folds up out of the way, and doesn't get splatters on any pages. It holds just about any book, magazine, or even a single paper. Then it folds up out of the way...love that.

I hesitated on purchasing this as I think the price is outrageous...but I couldn't find a comparable one for less. I would have given it 5 stars if the price were reasonable.

It does seem to be well made and it was easy to install. The color of mine is more of a maple color as opposed to the oak look in the picture.

Since I have very limited counter space and love to use my cookbooks, this gadget was just what I was looking. It fits perfectly under the cabinets and holds whatever cookbook I'm using perfectly. My son saw it and now wants one for his kitchen as well. I would buy this again for sure.

Easy-Grip Cook's Knife With Plastic Handle - 12"

Easy-Grip Cook's Knife With Plastic Handle - 12'This is a true commercial grade knife. No fancy box or handle, its meant for one thing, working that's it. It took a few minutes of honing to get it razor sharp, but it took an edge rather easily. Balance is decent with heft towards the front which is to be expected with a knife this size. I have a 10" chefs knive and didn't want to spend a fortune on a 12" since it won't be used too often in a home kitchen and this fits the bill pefectly. I'm very pleased and highly recommend it!
