Miyako 7" Ceramic Chef's Knife, Glossy White

Miyako 7' Ceramic Chef's Knife, Glossy WhiteThis is my second ceramic knife I have owned. Previous owner of a Kyocera but I unfortunately lost it during our move.

The Miyako is a very nice knife. The blade is very shiny, almost a mirror finish to it. The handle is very soft to the touch. It's hard to describe, you need to touch it for yourself. Annnnnd, it's dang sharp! Awesome knife thank you!

I bought this to complement the 3 piece set. It's perfect. Now I own a 4 5 6 and 7 inch set. These ceramic knives have become my "Go To" knives when I cook. It handles everything without problem. I can't cut through bones with them but who does anyways? That's when butchers are for.

This was a gift, so I haven't used it. However, the recipient who is an avid amateur gourmet cook is thrilled with it. He says slicing is almost effortless and he can slice the softest things without squeezing them.

This is sold as a Chef's knife but the literature that comes with it clearly tells you how NOT to use it as a typical knife (due to the possibility of breakage)

This product can at best be sold as a "slicer" as that is literally what it is restricted to doing.

Either that or placed on the wall as an expensive conversation piece.

Trudeau Stainless Steel Grapefruit 5-Piece Set, Yellow

Trudeau Stainless Steel Grapefruit 5-Piece Set, YellowThe knife is terrific. One end has two parallel blades, serrated and sharp, with a small gap in between. You position this over a radial membrane to quickly and easily separate the grapefruit from both sides of the membrane. After zipping down each membrane, you can efficiently slide the knife's curved other end around the circumference of the grapefruit. Voila!

The spoons are nothing special. They're OK, but don't win any style points.

This would earn five stars if the spoons were nicer than diner-quality.

Grapefruit knives and spoons are very difficult to find. Amazon helped me find them, and the company they suggested fulfilled the order just as they said they would. The spoons and knife are of good quality, and the knife especially makes grapefruit easier to cut and eat. I would recommend this set for purchase. It is a good value for the money.

Sharp utensils, well balanced. I really enjoyed the length of the spoons. Will eat more grapefruits from now. Like the yellow color. Amazon has many choices for battle with grapefruits. Bought two, one for Chicago, the other for Sunny Isles Beach in Florida. Niam, niam, niam, goooood.

This set was made poorly. The spoons and the knife have a raw metal edge that has not been finished, was made cheaply and poorly. We could not use the spoons as they gave a strong metallic taste in your mouth. At first I thought the design of the knife was smart, but found that although the curved side of the knife works well for cutting around the edge of the grapefruit, the straight side of the knife, meant for cutting sections, is actually a double knife and it ends up massacring the grapefruit. I actually cut off one of the double knives and now it works ok.

we had to throw out the spoons, the knife also has a raw metal edge that catches and does not cut cleanly or smoothly. Not worth the purchase!

The spoons work very well and are solid. The knife is great but the spoons can be used well even without the knife.

Gorham Studio 20-Piece Stainless Flatware Set, Service for 4

Gorham Studio 20-Piece Stainless Flatware Set, Service for 4This is the flatware we have used day-to-day for about four years now, and I still love it. In fact, I'm going to order replacement pieces for the ones that have disappeared over the years, and expand our original set. The weight and balance feels very comfortable in your hand. They are easy to clean. Our pieces have been washed by hand and in the dishwasher, and though they now have faint scratches all over from use, they still shine and look beautiful, just as stainless steel should.

When we got married 2 1/2 years ago, this was the "everyday" set that we picked out. Since then, we have gotten daily use from them, and it is this amount of usage that I base my review on...

Pros:

1) dishwasher friendly

2) scratch resistant (for the most part but don't scrub the life out of it!)

3) great for everyday use, but stylish enough for formal entertaining

4) the knives are sufficiently sharp for most meat dishes

Cons:

1) they hold heat extremely well, so watch yourself after they've been run through the d/w or been accidentally left in a pan that you're stiring

2) if you eat spaghetti like a true Italian (which I'm not, but I still eat this way), and wind your noodles around your fork by using a spoon, there is something you should be aware of: The spoons' bowls get scratched by the fork tines too easily and you end up with a dull-looking finish. To minimize this, just use the same spoon each time you need one for this purpose (unfortunately, you WILL know which one that is). Otherwise, this set is pretty scratch resistant.

Overall, we are very statisfied with this set as a whole. They have gotten daily use for the last 2 1/2 years and have served us well. Even the specialized serving pieces (sold separately)get frequent use.

Douglas Quikut 4859 Ginsu 5-Piece Stainless Knife Prep Set, Natural

Douglas Quikut 4859 Ginsu 5-Piece Stainless Knife Prep Set, NaturalI bought this set for my MIL who is always coveting my set of Ginsu knives. I have the full block set which includes the steak knives & kitchen sheers. She didn't need the steak knives, so I bought her this prep set. I was disappointed to that this set is not a full sized set. The length of the knives is written in the item description, but I think they need to make it more obvious that these knives are a miniature version of the full sized ones.

These four knives are good looking and sharp. And I really mean sharp. They can easily slice vegetables and the like. They have a good nicely balanced feel in your hands. I also like they dont take up too much room on your counter. And for the selling price you cant go wrong

Ginsu 4859 5 piece Stainless prep set

These knives are amazing for the price. You can't beat it! They are sturdy, cut amazingly well, never need to be sharpened and I haven't had any problems with rust! I never put them in the dishwasher because I know that they would probably start to rust. Its so easy just to hand wash them. Nothing will stick to the blade so its an easy rinse wipe and your done! For anyone looking to buy great knives but don't want to spend a lot of dough, this is the buy for sure!

These are possibly the sharpest knives that I have ever used in my life!! Apparently all these years I've been using dull/below average knives. The reason that I did not give 5 stars is because the block that it comes with is not truly made for these knives. They fit so-so into the slots. The smallest knife we actually had to force into the smallest slot. Other than that I would recommend these knives!! Fantastic!

Its a nice set for the price. They cut nicely, are weighted nicely and are attractive and the block is attractive and takes up the minimal space I had for it.

Wusthof Silverpoint II 6-inch Chefs Knife

Wusthof Silverpoint II 6-inch Chefs KnifeI just added this knife to my Silverpoint set and as all the others the lightweight and super sharp blade makes it a pleasure to use. I'm a knife enthusiast and have many knives both forged and stamped high end and low and I can say every Wusthof I have purchased have been top quality regardless of the series or price. People that don't understand cutlery may say this knife is thin and flimsy but leave out how well constructed and razor sharp it is and the fact that the lightweight reduces fatigue in the kitchen. If you prefer a heavy knife then pass on this but you like super lightweight performance you'll be very pleased with it as I am. Happy Cooking!

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin Four Star II 7-Piece Knife Set with Block

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin Four Star II 7-Piece Knife Set with BlockThese knives are great, I used to be a chef and used the original Four Star knives everyday for many years. I bought a set of these a couple years ago and love them, we just bought another set for a friend's wedding gift. I do recommend getting the 7,9, or 11 piece set and purchase the steak knives separately, as the full set comes with steak knives that don't have the matching handles.

This knife set is great. After talking to many people, I compared the handling of Wusthof vs. Henckels Twin Four Star II knives and the Henckels feel amazing. These knives feel heavier and more stable than any other knife I've held. The grip is fantastic and they are well balanced. With this set you only get four knives, which is a little expensive for a consumer knife set but it is still much cheaper than buying these knives individually in open stock. Overall, we are very happy with this set.

Knives from Solingen, Germany have always been a Mercedez of cutlery. This set is of a superb quality. Please note that the same brand offers an 8-pc set, which is only 10 box more expensive. Base on the reviews, that kit is manufactured in Malaysia or China. This one is not. It is straight from good old Deutschland.

In addition, these knives were individually forged from high quality steel. It shows in their appearance and sharpness. One pass of the chef's knife cuts through the meat and the container it is laying oin. If your finger is in the way it will cut that too. Be careful and good luck!

Stanley Roberts 13 Piece Cutlery Block

Stanley Roberts 13 Piece Cutlery BlockThe block contains a nice mix of steak knives, scissors and utility knives. The handles are lightweight plastic, so the knives don't contribute much to the cutting action you'll get a good workout cutting up lots of fruits and veggies with these. The knives seem to stain and spot pretty easily, as do most cheap utensils. If you have deep pockets, you're probably looking at brand-name cutlery anyway, so you'll give these a pass. However, if you're looking for an inexpensive set of knives to "make do", these will do nicely.

Oenophilia Coutale Sommeliers Corkscrew

Oenophilia Coutale Sommeliers CorkscrewThis is the best corkscrew of it's kind! I am a professional bartender and server and this is the only corkscrew I buy now for work and home. The design of the double-pump is much more ergonomic than your regular double-pump corkscrews and it makes much more sense. (It may take a minute to get the hang of it because it's the opposite lever direction than you're probably used to, but after a few times using it you'll love it.) It is also light-weight and durable, and the price is awesome!

Starting with:

The good, and in fact very good No question about it, the Coutale concept of a spring loaded smaller foot inserted within the main foot is brilliant, way better than just about anything (two part foot, broken, and of course single) to extricate a recalcitrant cork. The short but coated screw goes in nicely and manages dry corks pretty well. Grade: A.

However, moving on to:

The bad and rather obnoxious Once pulled out and used, the foot doesn't fit snugly back in the main body of the corkscrew and instead flops about like a broken wrist and gets in the way, making the task of threading, specially through tough corks, more irritating that it should be. B-/C.

But it goes from bad to:

Very, very ugly The foil cutting blade on the sommelier version is an absolute, total disaster, a pathetically dull blade with a ridiculously pointed end that is very successful at slicing careless fingers (nothing like a blood stained label as a selling ploy), and perhaps killing pigs, but is near useless at cutting through foil. Very disappointing and ubersucky: I've resorted to removing the foil completely, which rather spoils the presentation, or using a separate knife or foil cutter in all cases. If this was a play for the triumph of form over function (it looks good) then bravo, otherwise it gets an F.

The worst of it is that these problems are FIXABLE, if not by the buyer. I'm a professional in the wine trade who may open up to a dozen bottles on any day: I can't imagine how obnoxious these issues must be for a sommelier who pulls double that each day. I'd pay triple if these glitches were fixed. As such, the good parts are the only things that keep me from forgetting this corkscrew in a drawer.

I liked the design, especially for fragile corks, but after 8 months of home use the screw fell out of the main body.

I own two of these corkscrews and have been very impressed. As a professional bartender these corkscrews allow me to open a bottle of wine in moments and provide a sharp blade that I can multitask. My only complaint, as seems to be a common one, is that the arm of the corkscrew becomes loose very quickly and tends to "flop" around. Regardless, I would definitely purchase more of these in the future.

Want Oenophilia Coutale Sommeliers Corkscrew Discount?

I took a chance on this product due to the high reviews here on Amazon. I'm glad I did. I like everything about it! The weight is just right, the material provides a good grip and a nice aesthetic, and the action is very smooth. The knife works very well, the bottle opener can be used without moving anything, and all the parts came well lubricated. Highly recommended.

Edit: I guess I've had this for awhile now, but I'm upset to report that it recently broke. The plastic "head" piece that surrounds the blade-casing on top broke off like a clamshell. Perhaps I should have been more careful with it, but I wish that one piece had been constructed a bit more sturdily. I still recommend this, but don't think I'll be buying a second knowing my butter-fingers.

Higo no Kami Dai(sizeM), Nagaokoma, Import from JAPAN

Higo no Kami Dai(sizeM), Nagaokoma, Import from JAPANA higo no kami is a kind of archetypal folding knife. In Europe and the U.S. this type of non-locking knife is called 'friction folder'. Friction folders are traditional but very basic knife designs that can be traced back to the Romans. That these designs are still in use today should be taken as prove that despite their simplicity they have worked well for thousands of years and continue to do so.

Having no locking mechanism, a Japanese friction folder like the higo no kami Dai is opened by pushing with your thumb on the protruding tang of the blade. Keeping your thumb on the tang after having opened the knife will prevent the blade from closing. To my mind this is a more secure design than using a spring as in other non-locking knives, e.g. a Swiss Army knife(SAK), because you are in direct control of the force needed for locking. If you apply a secure grip, the knife will not close. The higo no kami Dai I call my own has been up to any cutting task until now and can even handle light stabbing (I once had to open a can with it although stabbing is clearly not what the knife was designed for).

The higo no kami Dai is made out Hitachi-BlueSteel, a very hard non-stainless carbon steel which takes a razor sharp edge due to its grain structure (fine grains). Blue steel or Aogami holds a sharp edge for a very long time and can be easily resharpened if necessary. That is why Aogami also is the steel of choice for hand-forged Japanese kitchen knives. As with all knives, it is not essential that the knife comes shaving sharp out of the box. It is much more important that the blade can be resharpened to a fine edge easily as all knives will become dull when being used. Having said that, I would like to add that I was pleased when my higo no kami Dai did come shaving sharp out of the box.

The blade of the higo no kami Dai has been hand-forged in SanMai technique, meaning that two outer layers of soft but shock-resistant steel are forged onto a core of hard but more brittle steel in order to protect the core. The marks on the top of the blade are hammer marks which in my view add to its character.

Being made out of non stainless carbon steel, the blade is prone to rust if not cleaned after use. To prevent it from rusting one should apply a light coat of oil every three to six weeks. Olive oil or peanut oil will do, Japanese camellia oil is even better. A small bottle of that will last for years. Apply a thin coat of oil and then wipe down the blade with a clean piece of cloth.

As with all higo no kamis, one of the main drawbacks of the design is the rather slim steel handle which might feel uncomfortably when trying to apply a secure grip. Also the fit and finish of the handle is rough (as it is often the case with Japanese kitchen knives). Obviously the blade smith focussed on the blade and its cutting ability and only put little work into the handle. Of course this is what makes the higo no kami Dai still affordable. It is a hand-made tool made by a professional but reduced to the max.

In order to improve the grip I have bought a traditional Japanese leather sheath for my higo no kami Dai, which looks like a traditional sheath for folders but is open on the back an spots a lanyard hole. You put the higo no kami Dai in this sheath, then put a leather strap through the lanyard holes both of the sheath and the knife (thereby also securing the knife to the sheath). To open the knife, pull it up and out by the protruding tang, open it and then push it back into the leather sheath with now serves as a kind of leather scales to the handle. The grip is greatly improved by this and I am told that many Japanese carry their higo no kamis this way.

All in all, the higo no kami Dai is a nice traditional knife and clearly worth a buy for those who feel comfortable with the concept of friction folders. It is not a substitute for a beefy locking folder (think Spyderco or Benchmade) but it is a great addition. I use my knife mainly in the office because it raises little concern with the co-workers and it is legal in the place I live. Given the choice between a higo no kami and a SAK [assumed that this would be a single blade, non-locking one which yet again most SAKs are not ;-)] I would always choose a higo no kami.

I ordered this little number after I fell In love with the look of Higonokami knives. It's such a simple beautiful knife. It's a blade, a rivet and a brass handle. I saw another persons review talking down on the knife, obviously they will never be happy with anything. The beauty of this knife is it was designed to be used, not to just be a pretty knife. That aside, it's rough looks make it stunning, truly a piece of art. The perfect blend of form and function.

Anyways... I like mine, but what do I know? I'm not a knife collector, I just like nice looking useful things.

I am still feeling excitement every time I look at Higonokami. I sharpened this knife to razor sharp edge that cuts so clean you don't even feel it (yes, I accidentally cut my finger the other day, so I know what I'm talking about).

I love this product. The knife came very sharp, and seems nice and sturdy. I am actually writing this 6 months later, and it has lasted just fine. The blade is great, and getting it for this price, they did cut down on handle quality, but it isn't a bother to me. I think the brass is just fine. Actually, I took a fine sharpie to their engravings so it stands out better, and on the other side I was able to engrave names (in Hiragana) and throw in some kanji. I would buy from them again, it shipped and arrived quickly.

I knew this product would have to be hand-washed even before I considered buying it, so that was not a factor in purchasing it. It matches the dinnerware I have, gives it an old-fashioned look, and I only use it for spring and early summer anyway. I use fiesta ware flatware the rest of the year, and yes, I wash that by hand also. It just lasts so much longer, no matter what the manufacturer specs are. I mean seriously, is handwashing a few pieces of flatware every day that big a deal? And while I can see it's not the sturdiest flatware going, that's what serveware and steak knives are for. This is for eating, not cooking, serving, or prepping. And it does a great job doing just that. And it's gorgeous.

Hey, it cuts the cheese! And it's ugly, in that 1960's kind of way. Actually, it has a fine waverly edge ground into both sides of the blade at a fairly high angle, so that the slice of cheese separates from the flat of the blade well, and doesn't drag, as the blade advances through the cheese. It's the Right Way to slice cheese. And as a bonus, it has the word "CHEESE" punched into the blade, so you can't forget what it's for!

Wusthof Classic 5-Piece Chef Knife Set

Wusthof Classic 5-Piece Chef Knife SetThese are incredibly nice and extreemly sharp. I have no doubt they will last 20 years. I have used them a lot lately and no matter what I cut its quick, clean and easy. LOVE THEM.

Wusthof Classic 8-Inch Wide Cook's Knife

Wusthof Classic 8-Inch Wide Cook's KnifeI prefer the eight-inch knife over a ten for weight reasons and the wide series gives lots of knuckle-slide area for repeated chopping tasks. I've owned Wusthof-Trident knives since before graduating from culinary school over ten years ago. In fact, I still own all but one that I still use daily (One was stolen). The knives hold an edge better than any other I've used (and I've tried 98% of what's out there), stand up to continuous use and are comfortable enough to use all day long. You'll never be sorry owning Wusthof-Trident knives.

I have a good collection of high-end knives dating from 10-15 years ago, and in my opinion, this is one of the best 8" cook's knives on the market. I prefer the extra width and heft of the 4584/20's wider blade over the narrower and lighter 4582/20 model. This knife has good heft and the handle is very comfortable and I prefer this handle over the Grand Prix's Also, because of the extra width of this knife, the edge is very thin, and that makes the blade feel very sharp when cutting vegetables.

There are knives on the market today with fancier steels, such as VG-10 on the Kershaws and "Trizor 10X" on the Chef's Choice. I have not tried these other fancy knives, and I am even comfortable in believing their claims that these new steel formulations will hold an edge much better. The fancy steels have a Rockwell-C hardness of 59-60, compared to the Wusthof's 56, but when it comes to balance, feel, and just plain old cutting performance, I doubt the Kershaws and the Chef's Choice knives can beat this Wusthof wide blade 4584/20.

As for this knife's edge-holding ability, I do pamper my knives and I don't dump them in the sink or dishwasher. I am careful with using knives on only wooden cutting boards. As such, my knives stay very sharp for a long time. A few seconds of touching up on the steel once every couple of weeks is all that's required to keep it ultra razor sharp.

Maybe the VG-10 and Trizor 10x steel knives don't need to be touched up once every couple of weeks to stay sharp? Somehow, I doubt that.

I purchased the Wusthof Classic 8 Inch cooks knife based on the manufactuers reputation for the highest quality products. This knife did not disappoint! First of all the balance is perfect, and the grip is very comfortable. After using it for 7 months now, the blade remains razor sharp. I have used it for a number of cooking related chores and it has become the one knife that I use for almost every job, from chopping, to slicing, to carving meats. The only care that is required is to use a steel to maintain the edge. I highly recommend this knife!

This knife is the real deal. I purchased mine at a knife store. It was recommended very highly by the shopkeeper who was an avid knife enthusiast and cook. He told me it was his favorite and as soon as I held it, it quickly became mine. I previously own Henckels 5-star which are also very nice, but his knife surpasses the Henckels in quality, weight, and balance. The extra wide blade is the kicker, it really allows for some some serious slicing and rocking of the blade without busting my knuckles. The downside to this however, is that it won't fit in my knife block, as others have mentioned.

Talk about sharp... Sure, every quality knife is very sharp when they are brand new, but this thing?! I was playing around slicing an orange so thin you could see right through each slice. I mean, this thing was cutting the atoms in half! Also, I really like the angle of the edge. At the top, it is thick and manly, and then it tapers down to a razor edge, seriously. Handle is comfortable for me. I am a big guy. I must say, this knife might be a little too big for a very small person, it really depends on your preference. This knife will definitely be in my collection forever.

A year and a half later and it's still a dream to use. Still sharp, everyday use. It's the only knife I use. I cook every meal with fresh veggies and fruit and it just keeps going. Still makes me want to keep chopping and has kept me eating healthier because of it. Can say enough about the quality and versatility of this knife.

6-month update--Still razor sharp, still the best knife I've ever used. It's still a pleasure every time I use it, which is every day for just about everything. It does it all, and it does it well. Fingers fit so well on it. I feel much safer than any previous knife. It's a joy to use and still makes me want to chop more veggies and more herbs.

Incredibly sharp, incredibly balanced, incredibly smooth surface feel, incredibly weighted, incredibly smooth rocking action/blade taper. Fits my hand so well around the smooth bolster. The extra width is so much nicer for keeping the fingers out of the way. The heft makes the job that much easier. Smooth as silk rocking motion. Yes, the cutting board required clean-up after use. I'm replacing my wife. This is so much nicer than the Henckel's chef's knife I've used in the past. I do hope and expect it to hold an edge as long as the Henckels. In all other respects of the handle and bolter feel and rocking motion, this thing leaves the Henckels kicking its can down the block. Not even close. The bolster and spine are smoother and shaped for a better grip angle. The handle shorter in transition with the perfect taper for a comfortable grip. It leads you into a proper pinch grip whereas the Henckels pulls you back onto the handle and makes the pinch awkward, unsafe, and even painful along the spine. The Wide version here is the proper depth that all chef's knives should be, about 1/2" taller than my previous chef's knife. Cut a carrot so thin you can see the logo, over and over again. So glad I spent the money, and the extra on the wide. You won't be able to pry this thing out of my hand. So stoked with an awesome new Boos board, a new Wusthof GP paring knife, and this Chef's knife. Wish I would have done it sooner. I would have been eating healthier more often and enjoying the process.

Winco Santoku Knife, 7-Inch

Winco Santoku Knife, 7-InchI am an avid cook, with over 20 years of culinary experience. I have a full collection of Zwillings Henckels Professional "S" series that I love. These Winware knives are designed to be very close the the Henckels Professional "S" line or Wustof Classics. The Winware knife was very substantial and well balanced with a very sharp blade out of the package. The steel may not be hard as the German ice hardened options, but with the cost nearly an order of magnitude below, more frequent sharpening is easily accepted.

Wooden Saya Cover for Santoku

Wooden Saya Cover for SantokuI have A SHUN premier 7" santoku and the blade is to wide to fit in the cover. It suggests that the knife and the exact same saya cover are frequently purchased together, but it wont fit just a heads up. lets see how good korins return service works. I have a saya cover of the same variety for a misono knife i own its awesome.

I recently purchased a Global 7" Santoku Knife (G-46 model) and the knife did not fit in the the knife block I already owned. I searched for a sheath and kept coming to this product. I was afraid it wasn't going to fit, but I'm happy to report it fits like a glove. Just perfect.

It looks great, feels great, and is a high quality product. Korin packaged it very well. Comes with a pin that fits in the notch to secure the blade from slipping out (handy for travel). See the pics I added for reference.

Global Synergy Knife Block Set, 7 piece

Global Synergy Knife Block Set, 7 pieceThis is an excellent set.

The actual holder is not good at all, it was ugly, overly tall, light weight and tippy due to cheap construction. We gave it away and used our old wood block.

This would not deter us from buying the set as I believe it is less expensive this way vs buying single units.
