The dishes are the perfect size. The flatware is big enough that she will be able to use it for years to come, the spoons actually hold food, the forks easily grab onto things, and the handles are thick enough for little hands to hold. The lip on the plates help keep everything on the plate when she is digging in, and the little cups are short enough that I don't worry about her knocking them over. Best of allthey all stack!! Great buyin fact, I might grab another set to give as a gift!

I bought this set for myself to take to work to use for lunch. It's just the right size for smaller meals, so is not just for kids. The colors are cheerful and the set is heavy enough that I believe it will be very durable.

I have bought a few other kids plates and cups over the years and these are by far the sturdiest. The plastic is very thick and sturdy. I am very impressed. My kids are 2,4,6 and they love to pick the colors that they are going to eat with.

I absolutely love these! My daughter is one and a half and she can use them! They are a little large for her but the forks actually keep food on the spokes, they are a bit pointy but very kid friendly. They're super sturdy, non of this flimsy plastic crap. Love love love them.

I haven't had these very long but they seem to be wearing well (they haven't stained or turned white in spots from the microwave/dishwasher). The large handles make it easier for kids to use and the mix and match colors are fun. For the price I paid and the amount of stuff I got, I have no regrets. Very good purchase.

Bought this set at Costco for $30. Been using them a few weeks. So far, so good. At the price if the knife doesn't last long, so what. I also have a set of carbon steel Wustof knives I bought about 30 years ago for about $400 then. They are packed away somewhere at the moment so I bought these Kitchen Aid ceramic knives in a pinch.

You get what you pay for.

Miyabi Kaizen 5 1/2-Inch Granton Santoku Hollow Edge KnifeWhen I received the package, I noticed the interior box containing the knife had been opened. When I examined the knife, I noted that the Miyabi Granton Model 34194-153 I'd ordered had been replaced with a Miyabi 5000DP, Model 34194-150.

The knife appears to have the same technical specifications as the one I ordered; however, I don't like the idea that it was substituted without any explanation. I looked up the Miyabi 5000DP on the internet and cannot find information on it. I don't know whether it's a Chinese knock-off or not.

Per the one bad review, I don't know anything about the seller. But, I do own three sets of these for my son who is three years old and he loves them!!! It was in a plastic container that was all scratched up and very little other packaging. The items inside were of good weight and size. So if you are buying them for personal use, they will be very pleasing. But beware, if you are giving them as a gift, you may need to repackage them.

I had driven around town to every housewares and cooking store in hopes of finding a contemporary cheese knife set to go with the ceramic plate I had purchased. Most were too expensive, too fussy, or cheaply made. Then I spotted this one on Amazon. It's exactly what I was looking for. Modern. Small size. Easy to keep clean. The product is similar to what is pictured, the only problem is that on the other side of each cheese knife, the brand "oggi" is imprinted on them. This was not shown in the picture. I wish i had known that the imprint existed prior to purchase, it might have changed my purchase. The item pictured just shows plain stainless steel which is what i prefer.

Wusthof Culinar 7-Inch Hollow Edge Santoku KnifeI've owned this knife for several months and am pleased with it -it certainly is good-looking. The santoku blade is great for chopping veggies -I think the hollow (Granton) edge is well worth the small increase in price over a flat blade.

The only drawback to this knife -as it is with competitors' steel-handle knives, is that most cooks will not feel as secure holding it, particular if your hands are a little slippery or greasy. It just feels as if it might slip. For that reason, I think the Wusthof Grand Prix version of this knife would be a slightly better choice. But hey, if you have a zillion-dollar kitchen and a zillion knives, this series is the prettiest to display that you'll find anywhere.

We bought this knife for our son. He has been helping in the kichen since he was three,and is training as a professional. He says this is the best knife he has ever used and is very easy to keep clean.

The offset handle makes slicing/chopping really simple without banging your knuckles. I wish the chef's knife had the off-set handle.

I bought this knife 4 or 5 years ago off of amazon, and it is still my favorite knife. I use it for all sorts of vegetable chopping, and it never lets me down. I sharpen as needed. It fits nicely in the hand, has a perfect weight, and if I ever need to replace, I will definitely buy again.

I owned this knife for about five years and could not be happier with it. The edge holds very well but we do a quick sharpening every 3-4 times it sees moderate use. Almost everyone who uses it is surprised how sharp it is compared to their own knives. We have purchased 3-4 more of this and the classic version for family that left our house wishing they stuffed it in their pocket before leaving.

The Culinar look is excellent, definitely an upgrade over the classic and just has a feel in your hands that surpasses normal knives. I don't know if it's worth the extra price but our main two knives are both Culinar while the rest are Classic. I guess my point is, if you want just 1 goto knife that looks and works the part, get this one.

I cannot recommend another knife over this one based on my wife's and my own experiences. I'm over a foot taller than my wife and we both hold and use this with ease.

For example bread and cakes, particularly angel food cake. We think it is better than the first one!

I have never owned a cheese knife before this one. I really like this one. It slices swiss and provalone exceptionally well. I think I will use my sharp knives for tomatoes, though and I would never consider grinding down the serrations. The cheese doesn't stick to the knife, which is exactly what I wanted.

While the knife is fine for tomatoes, it really shines with cheese. Removing the steel with the skeletal frame prevents friction. Cool!

Mine arrived with several blemishes on the back or "spine" of the blade nothing to effect cutting performance just enough to make it look cheap and unfinished. I've had a similarly designed knife from a different mfg. that did not have those problems.

MinoSharp Sharpening Guides 2-Piece Set

MinoSharp Sharpening Guides 2-Piece SetPeople who criticise this product simply don't know how to use them. My own experience as an amateur, who wants really sharp kitchen knives, is as follows:

For sharpening kitchen knives to that really razor sharp edge, you must use sharpening stones (I recommend Japanese waterstones, Shapton, Ice Bear or King brand all readily available) starting from medium grit and progressing to fine then extra fine grit. The final grit should be at least 6000 grit. Personally, I use a Shapton 12000 grit final stone, and finish off with gentle stropping on a leather strop, with Cr0 powder on it. This gives a true razor edge. We are talking about an edge of 0.5 micron width. This is the same as the best quality razor blade.

When sharpening blades to this fine an edge, it is critical that the blade MUST be kept exactly at a constant angle to the stone (usually about 15 to 20 degrees). The difficult part for most of us is to hold that constant angle just using your un aided fingers. Unless you are a real expert, you will be like me unable to maintain that exact angle constantly when sharpening freehand. Because human hands and fingers are too flexible!

The answer is these simple clip-on guides. They slide onto the back of the knife and hey presto there is your fixed angle. You can slide the guide onto the straight part of the knife (nearer to the handle) to sharpen it, then move the guide onto the curved part near the point) to sharpen that part of the knife. This means that you are sharpening the knife in sections.

The current guides (made in China) have plastic sleeves which prevent scratching the knife, older guides with no plastic can easily be made non scratch by installing your own sleeve from a cut down plastic milk bottle, folded in half and pushed into the guide.

I have used these guides on my Global knives and other Japanese kitchen knives and have found that the knives are much much sharper than new.

Incidentally, these guides, when used as directed, will give a blade edge angle of about 10 degrees. This different from what most sharpening advice (including Global's own)which is normally about 15 to 20 degrees. No matter the more acute angle gives a much sharper edge.

Also I recommend using a ceramic "steel" in particular the Kyocera CSW-18 which has a super fine grit and is far superior to diamond "steels"

If you've read this far you might be interested in doing some net research on knife sharpening. There are some very good tutorials there.

A "must buy" book is Chad Ward's "An edge in the Kitchen". This book has just been released. Available from Amazon and highly reviewed. Chad tells you all you ever need to know about selecting, using, and sharpening kitchen knives.

I've owned a Global chef's knife for almost 2 years. It continues to perform very well although it has lost its sharpness. Because of its impressive performance, I've given away my other knives and use the Global almost exclusively. Because the knife was expensive, I wanted to sharpen it properly and did a lot of research before buying the Minosharp sharpening guides. Based on experience, sharpening with a stone is still superior to fancy and costly ready-made sharpeners like the Minosharp plus. I can buy a new Global for the price of that sharpener. Although I know how to use a stone and had success with sharpening smaller knives, my hands are too small to maintain the right angle for the 10-inch Global. I used the Minosharp guides soon after receiving them in the mail and they worked like a charm! Great value for less than 15 bucks. My Global is now as sharp as the day I took it out of the box. Other reviewers pointed out that the guides can scratch the knife. I avoided scratches by covering my knife with 2 layers of transparent 3M shipping tape that was wide enough to cover the path of the sharpening guide (one layer could have done it but I wanted to be sure). I had no problem sliding a guide down the covered back of the knife. For those new to sharpening with a stone, I highly recommend that you watch Mino Tshuchida's knife sharpening tutorial on youtube. He works for Global and his video is the official tutorial from the company. The video can be a bit difficult to understand because of Mr Tshuchida's thick accent but after you watch it a few times you will learn a lot of tips. Happy slicing!

I purchased this item with a $350.00+ knife. The guide rail leaves scuff marks on the top part of the knife, but it creates a perfect edge that I would have had problems making. I use my knife 10 hours a day cause I am a sushi chef so it is important to me to keep my knife sharp. I don't know why people are giving this item a bad review. Personally I don't think they know how hard it is to sharpen a knife with a whet stone. Trying to keep one angle on a double edge knife is extremely hard and could also damage a knife if sharpened from multiple angles. Anyways who cares if your knives get scratches on it. It's ment to chop and slice.

Sure, they keep the knife at the right angle, but they only work well on the straight part of the blade. Where the curve is and where the blade gets more narrow the guide makes the angle steeper, which isn't good for the edge. You're better off just practicing and getting good at sharpening without the guides.

Today I bought one with plastic insert and I can confirm it scratched my knife at the second and further insertion attempts. I could almost hear the sound :).

No matter how long I have washed it under running water.

Also when I set it aligned to the blade edge as instructed in the manual (not aligned to the knife end), I find it impossible for it not to move while sharpening...

Shun Electric Knife Sharpener.This is the best knife sharpener I have ever used to put a new edge on a dull blade with out chewing up the blade and putting scratches all over an expensive forged knife(like a Chef's Choice knife sharpener does and doesn't produce the result like this one). And is it so easy to use! Only about four passes through and you have a new edge on a dull knife. I really can't recommend this product enough.

Honing steel only works for so long and professional knife stores often get confused when you ask them about working on a 16 deg angle edge.

So for those reasons getting a sharpener that could do the job was a must. I've used it on my knives (also Shun) and the results were everything I could have asked for.

I did have some issues running the utility knife through Shun Classic 3-1/2-Inch Paring Knife, mostly because of the short blade. But when using my santoku Shun Classic 7-Inch Santoku Knife it worked like a charm and the results on both were fantastic.

As for the unit itself, it is quite solid because of the motor, and includes a compartment for keeping the power cord tucked neatly away. I did have some trouble with the power button. It had to be pressed farther than I would have expected and the detent felt off to me.

The grinding wheels seem to be ceramic and the grinding assembly is easily removed. I would assume that would be for either cleaning or if the grinding wheels need to be replaced.

It is a bit on the expensive side, but I'm sure that it will more than pay for itself in sharp knives.

I have only used this on shun classic knives. While it does sharpen a dull knife, it does not do nearly as good of a job as having your knives professionally sharpened. I also fear it takes off much more metal than is necessary to achieve a new edge. Buy this only if you are exceedingly lazy about getting your knives sharpened and it won't happen any other way. Otherwise get your knives sharpened professionally. Shun will sharpen them for free if you don't mind shipping them to Japan (rolls eyes). I get mine done at Sur La Table; they charge an arm and a leg, but they specialize in Shun knives and do a great job.

I'm a Shun fan. Love their knives, but their knife sharpener isn't up to this company's usual quality standards. It's useless on short blades like the paring knife and can easily put nicks in the blade -regardless of length. Not what you want for these instruments. And if you're expecting "factory sharp", forget it.

Victorinox 7-Inch Granton Edge Santoku Knife, Rosewood HandleI cant tell you how much I love this knife.I have been working in kitchens since I was 15 (I'm 26 now) so I have been through a few knives.for the price I cant fault it.The knives I usually use are Wustof or Global.they are amazing knives and are of very good quality.the down side is they can be very hard to maintain,and when you lose the edge it will be very difficult to get back,near impossible if you don't know what you are doing,but this knife is so easy to sharpen to almost scalpel sharpness.the blade is very thin so I'm always using it on veg and fish and other very delicate tasks.It does feel like a cheaper steel but then again I think it matches the price.There are a lot of chefs just out of culinary school in my restaurant who buy the best of the best but they do their knives no justice.I have only had the knife for four months,I'm not expecting lifetime usage out of it,but think about this,if you walked into a professional kitchen and see a 10 year classically trained vet' using a cheaper knife compared to a wet behind the ears just out culinary school Gordon Ramsay wannabe using top of the range knife,you just have to think to yourself,why is the better cook using a cheaper knife?

I'm only giving it 4 stars because it is only my second santoku knife and I still like the western style chef knives just for that rocking motion you can achieve.other than that,the Japanese know what they are doing and they have kick ass style of knives.

I've owned Victorinox knives for a long time, when my french knife finally had to be put down (I loved that knife, had it for 16 yrs.) I bought a 7" Santoku with the Rosewood handle. Flawless performance, superlight, razor sharp, easy to hone/sharpen, this has become an instant favorite. Nimble and accurate, EFFORTLESS to use, let me emphasize that again, EFFORTLESS to use!!! I'm not a pro chef, but I do a lot of cooking, and this knife delivers like no other. It is hands down, the most bang for the buck value available in any kitchen knife. If you want to spend a pile money just to say that you have latest "it" knife, by all means, go right ahead, if you would like to get a high quality knife that just performs and aren't worried the least bit by what some cooking school geek says or what the food show personalities use, this is the knife to get. I am also a writer, and have advocated the use of good (sharp) knives many times. I've mainly preferred the Japanese made Santoku knives. I used a steeling stick often to keep the nicks and bumps out and never put them in the washing machine.

It used to be that, even though my knife would slice easily through vegetables, I could always "feel" the cutting action. Even when I could hold a leek over a garbage can and cut off the end section in one go.

But THIS KNIFE! Like BUTTER! I'm getting verklempt! I cut through vegetables and have to look to see the slice, because I feel NOTHING! I've never been able to slice through potatos as if I were cutting through, not butter, but AIR! AND, the potatos didn't stick to the knife, the way they usually do.

I've got a lot of knife replacing to do!

PS I used to use 8-inch knives, and I do plan to purchase some, but the 7-inch size is very nice and light feeling.

This knife is perfectly balanced in your hand. I didn't know what "perfectly balanced" really meant until I held this knife. The rosewood handle not only looks good, but is extremely comfortable. The blade, as with all Victorinox knives is razor sharp. If you haven't bought a Victorinox kitchen knife before, but have a few Swiss army knives, the sharpness does not compare. The kitchen knives are infinitely sharper out of the box. If I had to compare this blade edge to a pocket knife out of the box, I would say it's in the same category as Spyderco blades. You will not be disappointed with this knife and it will quickly become your "go-to" knife when you need one in the kitchen. To give you one example of how sharp it is, it cuts through a stick of frozen butter as if it were a stick sitting out on the counter at room temperature. And don't let the sharpness scare you off. The sharper the blade, the less force it takes to make your cut and with less force there is less chance that the blade will slip.

I should also mention my wife used to be a chef so she has a bag of high quality kitchen knives, BUT she always grabs for this one when she makes anything! It is a super light, yet high quality knife.

After having these knives for about a year they start to chip and crack on the blade edges. They have been very-well cared for and always hand washed. We have sent several emails and tried calling Calphalon with no response for them it appears they could just care less.

I would strongly recommend staying away from any of their products!!!!!!

Calphalon Contemporary 6-Inch Chef's KnifeWhile looking at cutlery for a wedding present a couple months ago I stumbled on Calphalon's new line. Being cheap by nature I was intrigued by their prices on chef's knives. This led me to get myself one of their 8" models. It is a great knife with only one drawback it's almost too big for my small handed wife. Although it almost killed me to pay more for a smaller knife I recently purchased a six inch version. This knife we both love. Fit, finish, and balance all would make you swear that this is a high grade tool. Although priced nearer the cheapened up versions of Chicago Cutlery found in the Marts this is a knife that feels like it is a high grade piece. On the downside the knife is not German or American made but is another Chinese product. Unlike a lot of stuff from over there this time they got it right.

My main kitchen knife has been an 8" Henkels Twin chef's knife, but I wanted something a bit smaller. I picked this knife based on the reviews and the Calphalon name, and I wasn't disappointed. Though it's marked "Made in China", it's also marked "German Steel". This knife is HEAVY, feels like twice the weight of my Henkels...very thick backbone. The workmanship and finish are outstanding, and this thing takes a wicked sharp edge if you know how to hone it. I think it's a better knife than my Henkels, and at less than a third of what I paid for my Henkels ten years ago. Wish I'd bought this knife sooner!

You want a knife that is rugged and stays sharp, but won't set you back $100, this is a good choice. I have several of these in different sizes. Use them daily. Bought a hand-held sharpener which hones the blade in three or four strokes. No need to sharpen after every use. Full tang, which means the metal of the blade extends all the way through the handle. Junk knives tend to cut off the metal after going about an inch into the handle. As a result, they break under pressure.

This review is inspired as much by my fiance as it is by me. For the most part, I'm the one who cooks around the house, and this is my main 'backup' knife. It is not too long, but its still nice to hold with a good amount of weight due to the solid forged construction. It wasn't as expensive as my 8" Miyabi chef's knife, and it's very easy to sharpen, so this knife ultimately ends up getting more use than any of my other knives, mostly because I don't mind using it on a plastic cutting board (plastic tends to make knives dull faster than, say, a cedar cutting board, so expensive knives are best used on cedar to preserve their edge).

So, this knife is pretty good. My only complaint is that it doesn't hold an edge particularly well (even when used with a wooden cutting board), and definitely does not hold a razor-sharp edge at all. The difference is quite stark when you compare this knife to a higher end Miyabi or even a cheaper stamped victorinox knifeyou can easily tell that this knife doesn't feel as sharp. However, it makes up for this by being a well-balanced knife, and is a pleasure to hold. Plus, if it starts to get dull, its one of the easiest knives to sharpen. Just hone and sharpen it every now and then, and you'll be good!

While my criteria for a knife revolve around sharpness, construction and all-around badassitude, my fiance selects knives entirely based on how comfortable she feels using them. My fiance loves this knife, and it's her go-to because it is easy to handle and control, while being reasonably sharp. So, this knife is an all-around winner in our kitchen!

The first thing about this knife is the weight. It is heavy for its size and the user stated that it almost slices by itself. It weighs about 8.0 oz and is about 11 1/8 inches long. The blade is 6 1/2 inches long an is sharpened from the point to within 1/2 in of the handle leaving about 1/4 in of the blade near the handle not sharpened. The fit and finish is not perfect but the knife is a good sturdy tool. The handle fits comfortably in the hand and inspires confidence when cutting. For the price the knife is a good value, IMHO. I really like it and do not regret my purchase.

Grande Epicure M6501506 Acrylic 10-Inch by 14-Inch by 4mm Utility Board with Non Slip FeetI bought this to replace a similar cutting board that I have owned since 1972 that got lost when I moved. It is only textured on one side, so you can't used both sides. Even though it is textured, there are still cut marks on it after just a couple of weeks (my 40 year old cutting board never got cut marks on it). It is very thin and it has a melted place on the edge from having put it in the dishwasher. Since it is a bit large for the top rack, I assumed it should be put in the bottom rack. Maybe they want you to hand wash it every time you use it. I would not recommend this for long term use.

For an Epicure/Amazon product, it works but not much greater than the dollar store board that I can buy at the dollar store. It does have 4 little feet to keep the board from sliding.

Victorinox Forged 8-Piece Knife Set with Block

Victorinox Forged 8-Piece Knife Set with BlockI've lived in Europe most of my life and I know a good knife. These are excellent quality knifes! However I was quite disappointed by the quality of the block and the cheap looking emblem on the front. Doesn't even look like the picture on Amazon... and of course it wasn't made in Europe.

To start with; Unlike some other reviewers, I like the wooden knife block. It is weighty, well balanced, not easily knocked over and has wide slots for the knives. To my eyes it looks balanced and fits well into a kitchen counter corner. The set also includes other practical kitchen items, such as the high quality steel, a santoku knife, a boning knife and good quality kitchen scissors/shears. These are expensive and quite useful items, often missing in other maker's sets.

The handles themselves are weighted, well rounded,and called an ergonomic design. They are a little longer than most and raised towards the rear. This allows the heel of the palm, to assist more in cutting and in theory, reduce fatigue in extended use. They fit all hands well but those with chubby or large hands have found their knife. I found them roundish and comfortable but didn't notice a huge difference between these and the classic style.

The bolster (metal between the handle and blade) doesn't extend to the bottom of the blade. This is an advantage for some slicing operations and doesn't give the knife that worn out look after repeated sharpening.

The 20cm (8") Chef's knife has the largest handle of the set and weighs in at 293 grams; with balance on the handle side of the bolster. This is close to perfect for a heavier professional knife, where the weight can assist in cutting. Interestingly enough at the halfway length of the blade, 10mm in from the edge, the blade thickness measured 1.1 mm. Just about a perfect balance between a thin (for ease of cutting) but weighty blade. I am impressed with this particular knife. The carver weighs 206 grams and the Santoku 214 grams and both feel good in the hand.

After several weeks of favourable use, I sharpened the knives to a standard 20 degree grind. This sharpening is where I often find quality or lack of it in a knife, which you can't see on purchase. They sharpened without much burr, indicating between a medium to hard, fine grained, well tempered steel. The surprise came on the sharpness test. Rarely have I had knives come out this sharp from a standard sharpening routine. In daily use the edges held well, didn't chip (unlike many of the harder Japanese knives) and a good edge came back with a few strokes from a carbide (Accusharp type) sharpener. The only minor change I would make to the set, is to the Santoku knife. There I would add a bit more taper from the bolster to the blade, to allow for a little more pinching between the thumb and index finger for some slicing operations. Plus I would prefer the grooves on the blade to be higher up, as they may become too close to the edge after several years of sharpening. A preference only and not really a fault.

I am a retire e who sharpens a couple hundred knives a year(for pocket money)and owns or has owned many expensive, moderate and cheap knives. The Victorinox Forged Knife Set has in practical use, been just about perfect for me. I highly recommend their purchase and they are worth the premium price. UPDATE: After several months of use. The Santoku is a real performer and ideal for the expensive minimalist who wants to own just one knife. It is the knife I now INSTINCTIVELY use for most cutting. It is hard to quantify but it has a feel/weight/edge/comfort/balance that merge together for a superb knife. Secondly I am surprised by how good and how often I pull the kitchen scissors from the block.

I ordered these knives and they arrived promptly. The knives themselves are very nice, but a little heavy. The block however is a total piece of crap! It has a thin layer of lacquer that had the edges worn away where the knives are slotted, likely from shipping. The small knives fall over because the block gives no support to them. The slot is too big. I returned them and will likely get Wusthof because, after looking at them in the store, their block is solid oak. I have always liked Victorinox but please step up your game and spring for a real block when your customers drop $300+ on knives.

Knives are well made and they cut nicely. It's good range of knife types that you will actually use. The blade's finish will mar easily even if you use something like a Scott scouring sponge. This is probably true for most other knives so not really an issue. The block is indeed terrible. The knife slots and overall block quality just isn't there, but then again I don't buy a knife set for the block. I'll probably get a magnet knife strip instead at some point.
