Bunmei 1803/270 - 10 1/2 inch Tako Sashimi Knife

Bunmei 1803/270 - 10 1/2 inch Tako Sashimi KnifeThis knife is the ultimate in slicing raw fish. The square tip is in the "Osaka style", which makes it a little more unique than other traditional sushi knives. The all stainless construction means easier maintenance, since most sushi knives are carbon steel and rust and stain easily. Balance is never, ever a consideration with sushi knives. They are not made for chopping. The long blade is designed for extended blade strokes while slicing through fish or vegetables. This knife gets lots of use at our house, even in slicing bananas for morning breakfast!

This knife has a nice weight and handling to it. It came in perfectly condition, and arrived very quickly. We made beautiful sushi with it.

...an edge, and good balance.

The fact that this knife came out of the package dull is something of a puzzlement to me, considering its cost. It did take an edge very quickly with a couple of passes over the steal, however.

The handle is very light weight hardwood and the black bolster is some kind of plastic, nylon I think, so the center of balance is too far out on the blade. I've had to Krazy Glue several American dimes to the butt of the handle to achieve proper balance (painted black to accent the bolster). The handle is also very short, not particularly designed for people with large, or even average sized hands, in mind. Keep in mind the stature of your average Japanese, I guess. Not meaning at all to be offensive, but my big American hand isn't afforded a real margin of comfort here.

I'm keeping this knife. I like the single-grind edge, which is also very straight really ideal for certain jobs. I don't see this as fulfilling the role of an all-purpose kitchen knife though. But, then, that's not why I bought it.

I think the best thing about this piece, aside from its specialized application, is just its plain good looks. Sounds shallow perhaps, but this thing is really pretty. So, sometimes form outweighs function. I can live with that in this instance.

Oneida Colonial Boston 65-Piece Flatware Sets, Service for 12

Oneida Colonial Boston 65-Piece Flatware Sets, Service for 12I was so pleased to see that Amazon carried Colonial Boston. I've had my current set for 11 years and it has held up well. We just needed some more pieces since my toddler threw away pieces as some sort of game.

This silverware set is perfect! I am super happy with what I received. I had paid $99 for a set of 8 when my hubby and I got married 11 years ago. Somehow, we have depleted our collection, and needed a new one. This one was only $88 for a set of 12!! It's every bit as nice as the one we bought when we got married. It's not too big, or too small...it's perfect! I was a little disappointed with the packaging, which isn't Oneida's fault. It had a little tape residue on the knife in the open front of the pkg (where someone taped the large box and the small box together. There was tiny scratching on the spoon for the same reason...wasn't protected when it was stored before shipping. The set however is perfect!! Comes with a couple of serving spoons as well!

Very pretty and a good weight, but some of the pieces started to tarnish before I used them. These were mainly a few knives that went through the dishwasher. I think it s a nice deal and would recommend, but pursuing replacement of tarnished pieces.

I have had a set of the service for 12 Colonial Boston for more than 30 years and it is still as beautiful as when I and my 1st husband bought it. When we bought it, we were able to buy an extra set of serving pieces and a set of 12 steak knives for an additional charge. Now, I am thinking about adding another service for eight, but cannot find any retailer who has the steak knives in stock. If anyone know where I could get additional steak knives in the Boston Colonial, please say so in this space with reference to this comment.

Cambridge Silversmiths Palm Tree 20-Piece Flatware Set, Service for 4

Cambridge Silversmiths Palm Tree 20-Piece Flatware Set, Service for 4The spoons in this set are practically flat, which defeats the purpose of them altogether. There are many better inexpensive options you can get instead. Read reviews first though. Otherwise it's impossible to choose a good set that won't rust or fall apart quickly.

Item came immediately was exactly as pictured not the best quality but goes with what I paid. Everything was great.

I bought this flatware to go with my tropical decor and have had them for nearly two months. They're very attractive and I do put them in the dishwasher, however I'm cautious about using them daily because they don't feel super sturdy. I'm very happy with this set and receive compliments from guests.

My ex and I bought this less than 3 years ago at TJMaxx for about 20 bucks to go with our Florida/tropical decor. After several runs through the dishwasher, they have tarnished and cracked and I'm looking into buying a new set now. They we're nice for a short while as they obviously serve their purpose, but don't expect them to last long.

Constructive Eating 3-pc. Construction Utensil Set.

Constructive Eating 3-pc. Construction Utensil Set.Initially saw this fabulous product in Time Out New York Kids a few months ago. Kept it in the back of my mind b/c my 17-month-old son is fascinated by trucks. We've been having such a hard time getting him to eat at all, let alone use utensils. And the little interest he does take in using a fork or spoon is marred by frustration b/c most toddler utensils don't work very well. Then I remembered the Constructive Eating Utensil Set. Went online, read good reviews and decided to give it a try. When the package came, my son saw me open it and immediately wanted to play/use his new "toys." I had just tried giving him dinner within the hour; no success. I cut up some chicken (which he rarely eats) and an apple (he loves them). He immediately was able to spear the chicken with the fork and proceeded to eat an entire plate of food, by himself, clapping after each spoonand forkful. My mouth was dropped open as was Grandma's. TOTAL SUCCESS! This product is magic. I also love that it's not made with paint and that the plastic is safe. I highly recommend it... And think it would make a great gift/stocking stuffer. Wish they would invent something similar for girls. Sometimes people gets things right. This is one of those times. Bravo!

My 18 month old son loves trucks, but using fork & spoon...not so much. These solved that. His favorite is the bulldozer pusher. Going to stock up on for gifts. Great!

These are genuinely fun kids utensils, unlike anything you have seen before. My personal favorite is the 'pusher', which replaces a finger to help push food onto the fork and spoon. Our kids love these, and we give them as gifts to other parents with kids that are learning to use utensils. Awesome!

These quickly became our 2-year old girl's favorite meal accessories. They've become our default gift too, because every time another kid sees these, they immediately have to have them.

They look incredibly real, but they are easy to use, a good size for little hands to hold, but also big enough that we can hold them easily when helping her with tough stuff like pasta and soup. The pusher is especially useful, as she learns to grip and use the fork and spoon.

Cute ideanot good fork, or spoon for little kids. The fork won't fork anything and the spoon is shaped wrong to hold food. Don't waste your money folkswish I wouldn't have.

KitchenAid Triple Riveted 16-Piece Set in Silverite Block

KitchenAid Triple Riveted 16-Piece Set in Silverite BlockI have had these knives for over a year now. Not one speck of rust. These knives a great. You never realize how bad your knives are until you use a good set of knives. I had a set of never-need-sharpening knives that I have had for about ten years. I always thought they were fine. As I lost pieces of the set due to breakage over the years I started looking for a new set. I decided on these. What a difference! They cut so well. It makes cooking much more enjoyable. I used to cut carrots and they'd go flying off the cutting board. I realize now it was because I wasn't using a sharp knife and they were more or less being "snapped" through than sliced through. These knives cut through the carrots with such ease, and the carrots stay right there on the cutting board instead of flying off. Every knife I have used out of this block has been sturdy, sharp, and rust-free. And it is nice to have the sharpener built into the block. I was kind of leery about the sharpener, thinking it may not be as nice as the sharpening rods in other knife sets; but the sharpener works quite well. I'm very pleased with this set.

This is a fairly good set of home chef knives. I have used high-end forged chefs knives, this set is not that. I have used 15 year old economy serrated knives, this set is not that either. These knives are a good mid-range stainless home chefs set. In fact it was a great surprise that this set is much closer to quality basic forged knives than economy stamped knives while being priced far closer to the latter.

An issue I have, not just with this set but almost all all-in-one home sets, is that it includes "steak knives" as part of its total. I would prefer to buy separate sets that would allow my cooking knives and my table knives to be separate and have more cooking knives included. That said, this set has a good range of the most needed cooking knives and the heft and balance of the knives are pretty good. The handles appear to be phenolic or similar material (box didn't say). They could have been smoothed and polished better but that isn't anything a years' worth of use won't hide.

The "silverite" block is painted wood and there are grippy rubber feet on the bottom. It is at a nice low angle which let you pull the knives to you as they come out rather than up into your kitchen counters like some more upright designs. Unfortunately it is clearly used for multiple knife sets. Because of this a few of the knife slots are overlong for the knives they hold in this set allowing those knives to shift a bit. It doesn't affect anything other than to make the handles appear misaligned if the block gets shaken. If you're OCD about that and a little crafty this can be "corrected" with some filler in those slots.

The sharpener actually does a nice job. I was skeptical, never having used that style sharpener, but it will put the edge back on a knife with a few strokes. I would caution that if you have a knife with a nick in it to take it out with a steel first to avoid putting a nick in the sharpening stones (ceramic?).

Over all I am quite pleased with the set and with reasonable expectations for this sized set in this price range I think others will too.

I had been waffling over buying a new set of knives for a long time. I didn't want to spend a lot of money, but I wanted a nice set that had a sharpener. This was exactly what I was looking for.

The knives themselves have good balance and the handle material feels durable. Since I'm a home cook I don't really need a fancy, expensive set, so this will do me quite nicely.

Again, if you're just looking for a basic set for not a lot of money then this is a definite winner.

Kitchen Knives SetThis set of three ergonomic knives help me prepare foods in the kitchen with less pain in my hands. The three sizes are helpful, and the blades are sharp. Buying this set of three costs about the same as buying just one knife from a catalogue.

Zyliss Apple Divider

Zyliss Apple DividerThis is an excellent and attractive apple slicer that works as well or better than every other slicer I've had. Zyliss produces kitchen utensils that show real thoughtfulness in the design, and this utensil reflects the company's general commitment to that ideal. The only possible way to improve it might be to rubberize the handles (I think Oxo does this), but in my opinion such modifications have little marginal value while adding unnecessarily to the cost.

The color, by the way, is a nice way to brighten up one's kitchen. These days, I prefer some departures from a regimen of black, white, and stainless utensils.

I was excited when I received the slicer thinking it would end my frustration when eating apples (biting with upper dentures & cutting with arthritic hands). To my dismay I did not have the strength to force the slicer through the apple. Not the fault of the divider, just keep in mind if purchasing for younger child or older persons' use. My adult son used it without a problem.

When looking for an apple slicer we looked for one that was sturdy and functional. We have a variety of Zyliss products and knew from experience with those that Zyliss = Quality. We were not disappointed. With 5 bushel boxes of apples to process this divider made it easier. Last night my sweetheart made a delicious apple crisp!

didnt ever think about the diameter for larger apples.. but this Zyless Apple slicer is perfect for larger apples. I have another brand store bought that will only work for small and med apples.. this one will handle all sizes easily.

This seems to be a sturdy gadget. Well made and the blades are tough and sharp. My only complaint is that you have to place the apple somewhat on a low level to be able to get enough weight on it to slice. At least I do. I put it on a plate in the sink and in about three seconds the apple is cored and nicely sliced. Sure beats messing with a knife.

I feel it's a smart purchase if you enjoy fresh apples and want them sliced in perfect slices.

Felix Platinum Starterset, 3-Piece

Felix Platinum Starterset, 3-PieceI received a couple of Felix knives about 35 years ago when my parents went to Germany. They have been a mainstay in the kitchen ever since. I bought this set for my daughter and I was envious when they arrived. They are of incredible quality. They have great balance. They are sharp beyond belief. I have mine professionally sharpened about once every 7 years and use steel in between. If hers hold half the edge mine have, I am sure she will be using hers 35 years from now.

The Perfect Slice Pie Cake Slicer As seen on TV 3 Piece Set

The Perfect Slice Pie Cake Slicer As seen on TV 3 Piece SetI bake a lot of cheese cakes and this product is great for cutting them. Also good for pies. Makes the presentation beautiful.

If you have a cake on a perfectly flat surface, it works(4 stars). If your cake plate has a lip or curves up as so many do, the Perfect Slices hits the raised portion and can't cut all the way through. So, totally forget pie it can only make a mark on the top to use as a guide for your KNIFE because the PIE DISH is in the WAY! You can barely cut the edge of the crust with this thing let alone all the way through. Calling this a pie cutter is false advertising. Even if you get the pie out of the dish whole (with a metal disposable tin, it makes a mess of it. And, it's humongous. Where to store it??? A total waste of money UNLESS you only plan to use it on cakes that are on a COMPLETELY FLAT serving surface.

I was really looking for something to cut my "Famous" New York Style Cheesecake. I make cheesecake and when I cut it, the cake sticks to the knife or whatever I am using. The slices pretty much crumble as I am cutting. Fortunately the taste compensates for the appearance!

Using this slicer, I figured I might be okay using it on a flat bottomed cheesecake out of an expansion pan. The cheesecake still stuck. The only difference was before I would have one little mess at a time with each slice. When I went to complete the cut with this new device slicing for the first time, there was an "Uh-oh" as I started pulling it up finding that I could now create messes on a much grander scale since I could now cut (or destroy) multiple slices in one stroke as they all stuck to the slicer and crumbled at once. This "Perfect Slice Slicer" did not solve my problem. This was a waste of time and money just enought to make it not worth sending back. I don't foresee any special uses for it to occupy space in my kitchen and it will likely end up at a local Thrift Store.

This device will only slice as long as the food item is on a flat surface (nope, don't see how it would slice pies). If it is used to cut anything that might stick to it, (like maybe cheesecake or very moist cake), it will stick as you come back up to complete the cut. I suppose one could use it to mark absolutely perfectly even sized portions, but I guess I'm just not that anal. I think a knife and pie server work as well or better.

I have been looking for something that will slice my cheesecake (kind of like those presliced cheesecakes in Costco where there are slices of plastic between every slice) and I have become frustrated in trying to find something... Still Looking!

Messermeister 7" Chef's Edge-Guard

Messermeister 7' Chef's Edge-GuardThis is my second purchase. Well worth the protection. I have a small kitchen cleaver which doesn't fit within my knife block. Using the Edge Guard allows me to safely hang the cleaver by the hole hook in the cleaver blade above the counter / beneath a kitchen cabinet. No worries about accidentally nicking something while the cleaver is displayed hanging. Why a second purchase? I had the original EdgeGuard for many, many years and recently replaced the original for asthetic reasons. Recently I tried to use the cleaver to crack open a coconut. I forgot to remove the Edge-Guard and made numerous hard whacks, wondered why the cleaver wasn't cleaving, then realized I hadn't removed the Edge-Guard from the cleaver's cutting edge. To my surprise, the Edge-Guard held its own. Although there were a couple of hairline cracks, the guard did NOT break through to expose the cutting edge--and I'm talking several HARD whacks! I could have lived with it 'as is' but decided to replace it anyway. It has a secure hold on the cutting edge. It would function very well for knife storage within drawers.

Actually I am surprised with the quality and durability of this chef's knife guard. Notice that this guard is not closed from all directions but allows the top part of the knife to go a bit outside if required. It is a light magnetic feeling so it grips the knife very well. Protection is 100%. Great stuff.

Works great. Although I've had some issues with the thickness of the knife. Sometimes they fall off sometimes it takes a lot of effort to get it off. But I'd rather deal with that then cut my hand digging in drawers or knife kits.

Kuhn Rikon Colori Art Chef's and Paring Knife, Black Damask

Kuhn Rikon Colori Art Chef's and Paring Knife, Black DamaskGreat print, great quality. These knives cut better than my roommate's santoku knives. They are also cuter than hers and they cost less. She is totally jealous and that alone makes it worth the price!

I had some crummy Ikea bachelor knives(the cheapest set they had) which I used before, which were great for someone who never cooked beyond slicing cellophane on Trader Joe's microwave dinners every so often.

When I had my girlfriend over to make some Omurice and she got visibly and vocally frustrated by her attempts to use these knives for anything useful, I knew something had to give.

This purchase cured that problem. They are razor sharp and easy to use. I think the nonstick coating on the side combined with their sharpness makes these much safer to handle since you will be touching the blade much less often when slicing veggies than a normal knife since it will usually take only one stroke to cut and you won't need to push the pieces apart after cutting.

If I had any complaints, it is that the handles to these seem really cheap compared to the blades, and sort of have that "micro-scratched" glossy ABS look to them. This does result in the knives being a bit poorly balanced.

I could have done without the pattern artwork. It looks nice but I normally prefer clean designs. But this was a good deal for two knives I needed, so I'm not complaining.

Jaccard Simply Better 15 Blade Meat Tenderizer 3331

Jaccard Simply Better 15 Blade Meat Tenderizer 3331I decided to purchase the 45-blade tenderizer instead. I owned a 15-blade tenderizer that was round in shape, and found the spread out blade format far more effective than a straight line of blades. The 45-blade tenderizer will accomplish that & cover more ground than the round one I had.

Update: Now having used this product & gotten used to it, I love it! It tenderizes everything from beef to poultry. I use it probably 4 5 times/week. It really is easy to use, not a lot of muscle required.

The only drawbacks I have found: the hard plastic storage case cracked a while back, but the unit still fits inside. (I really don't know what caused the crack.) After repeated use for a period of time, the blade piece is not as easy to remove for washing as it was when new. (It no longer "pops out" when the slide-release is employed.) To remove the blade piece, I slide the release button & use the narrow tip of a wooden skewer to gently push the blade unit through the handle casing. This does not, however, have any affect on the purpose or function of the tenderizer.

Ergo Chef Universal Edge GuardGreat knife edge guard, like all the other Ergo guards I have purchased this one does the job for long skinny knives.

This edge guard is good for thin blade like 1.5mm thick, but if you use this on 3.5mm thick blade it is very thight and hard to take it out. I gave three stars because it is too hard to put in and take it out for my 3.5mm thick knife, but everything ok.

Excalibur 9 Tray Large Food dehydrator with 26 hour Timer + Preserve It Naturally Book + Paraflexx

Excalibur 9 Tray Large Food dehydrator with 26 hour Timer + Preserve It Naturally Book + Paraflexx Premium Reusable Sheet 14X14 + Knife Set 7PC with Pine Block + Bamboo Toast Tong - 6.5 Inch LongFirst of all, let me say that I love this Excalibur dehydrator. I use it all the time because I am a Raw Food Vegan and this has been such a great product. 5 stars for this dehydrator. I love the fact it has a timer and how easy it is to use. However, I recommend buying the dehydrator by itself and ordering the Paraflexx nonstick sheets separately. The knives that came with this item are cheap and very dull, and note that you are only getting ONE Paraflexx sheet for the 9 trays in the dehydrator. When I bought this, the title said sheets, so I thought I was getting 9 sheets. When it came with only one, I contacted the seller and discovered that only one came with it. I was upset that I had spent the extra money to get things I didn't need when I could have used it to buy all 9 Paraflexx sheets. Thankfully, the seller was helpful and sent me 4 more sheets because of the misunderstanding, so at least I have 5 nonstick sheets.

Anyway, overall this deal isn't worth it. I strongly suggest you buy this dehydrator along with the sheets separately. Don't waste your money on this deal. 5 Stars for the Excalibur 3926TW Dehydrator though.
