Reed & Barton Manor House 5-Piece Stainless Steel Place Setting

Reed & Barton Manor House 5-Piece Stainless Steel Place SettingThe 5-piece place setting incorrectly contained two place spoons and no teaspoon. It is too much trouble to return orders when they are incorrect.

These settings are beautiful and light weight enough so that I dont drop them at dinners and embarress myself because of my problems with not being able to hold onto things without dropping them. They were so good I ordered even more to complete a ten place setting.

This silverware is very nice. The pieces weight a little less than I thought they would, however weight alone is not the determining factor when considering quality. These are 18/10 and have a great shine, also have a real expensive look and feel. Haven't used them yet but they sure look good in the drawer!

Swiss Army Brands 40192 Cheese Knife, 12-Inch

Swiss Army Brands 40192 Cheese Knife, 12-InchI have owned the 14 3/4" version of this knife for longer than I can remember. 25+ years. This is the only knife I own that isn't a Dexter-Russell knife. I'm prompted to write this because 8 months ago I was forced to put my stuff into storage and yesterday I got brought some of it home again. I was thrilled to see this knife. We've been together a very long time. I can't say anything negative about this knife. Not one thing. It's sharp, it takes an edge easily, it's strong. It's indespensible for cutting cheese prints, watermelons, pineapple, pizza, lobsters, anything that's big and unweilding in the kitchen. As a Chef, I've carried this knife to many jobs and many venues, used it to cut frozen food, even driven it through some frozen products over time with a hammer. It's a really tough knife. It has really stood the test of time. It's my friend! lol! The one thing that really amazes me about this knife is in all the places I've used it nobody has ever stolen it but everyone I've worked with has used it and been awed by how much easier life can be when you have double handled knife on board. To all you aspiring Chefs out there, I say this is a great, basic knife to add to your collection. It's served me well for a very long time. I highly recommend it as durable, versatile, professional knife for many situations.

CocoDrill Young Coconut Opening Tool -(Punch Tap) Knife Opener for Raw Coco Water Juice - Makes Str

CocoDrill Young Coconut Opening Tool -(Punch Tap) Knife Opener for Raw Coco Water Juice - Makes Straw Hole! This drill works great + was JUST what I wanted. Saves time and energy. I love this drill! Super invention!

This tool works like I would expect it to.

This is essentially a hollow metal tube with a hard plastic handle on it. The sharp end of the tube is wavy. It has a soft rubbery cap that covers it, but the cap doesn't stay on very well. It also has a tool to clear out the coconut that gets lodged in the hollow tube, which comes out easily.

I am a pretty small person, but with this tool I can fairly easily punch a hole into a young coconut (if the green outer layer has been removed to reveal the slightly spongy inner layer). I jab it pretty hard and twist/press into the coconut. Usually I have to clear out the hollow tube and jab the coconut a second time and then it will punch through.

I gave 4 stars instead of 5 because to me, 5 stars means that it opens effortlessly. Also, because the cap does not stay on. And finally, I wish the cleaner tool snapped in place for storage, but it falls out easily.

Recieved in a great timely fashion. Its made of durable plastic and thick steel which is great. There is a cap on the tip to keep someone from cutting themself however I feel that the cap will eventually get lost. There is also a knob that comes with it that slides down the top as a means of pushing the contents out of the bottom but its loose and will eventually get lost if not careful also. When you look at the picture the other components such as the safety cap and the push knob are not visible but they are useful if you can keep all of the contents together. Its made very sturdy. I'm satisfied.

Pumpkin Masters Power Poker and Saw

Pumpkin Masters Power Poker and SawI purchased this item two years ago,

it is the best thing that ever happened to

halloween pumpkins. I am 52 and thru the years

I have carved many of pumpkins (dreaded it every year)

But I love it now, this thing is like a hot knife

thru butter. My grand daughter (age 9) can easily use

it also (with adult supervision of course).

This item was well worth the money, I bought it for my husband and he found creating his pumkin master pieces so much easier this year. Highly reccommended.

I've used this carver for about 3 years now. I have no complaints about it. I love that you can put the poker in, as some carvers don't allow this feature. I have made some beautiful pumpkins with this. Last year I did the Mona Lisa and it only took about 15 minutes. I definitely recommend this product!

At first I really liked the power saw carving tool. Unfortunately, the blades are super flimsy. They bend super easily and break very quickly giving this product very limited usefulness. I wish I could give more stars but without useable blades, the product really doesn't have any value.

Fast Delivery great item for the price. Way better prices than the stores. I especially liked the way they came in the so quickly. Shared it with my mom & sis and they liked it to but it hard to find extra saw blades for it.

Farberware 12-Inch by 18-Inch Nonslip Board, Red

Farberware 12-Inch by 18-Inch Nonslip Board, RedI have a smaller version of this same cutting board but find it doesn't give me enough surface area for large chopping jobs. The size of this particular cutting board is perfect. The material its made of is durable, doesn't stain easily, resists scratches, and doesn't dull my knives. The only negative comment is that it arrived slightly bowed; so, it didn't sit flat on my counter. I manipulated it to make it flatter rather than return it. However, I do recommend the manufacturer rethink the packaging and give it a stiff cardboard or other container type that will keep the cutting board surface flat vs the clear wrap only packaging it currently is using.

Gorham Valcourt Stainless Flatware 5 Piece Place SettingI've had Gorham Valcourt Stainless Flatware for almost 20 years now, and they still look the same as they did the first time I used them. The pattern is attractive; it gives just a little decor but doesn't detract from the rest of the table decor. The aspect I most like is that the pieces are sturdy. If you like small, lightweight flatware, don't buy these, but if you want flatware with substance that will last, this is the set for you!

Needed to replace 2 pieces, but it was cheaper to buy the whole set from this vendor. Now I have some extras!

Heavy Duty Meat Cleaver (8" long x 4" wide)

Heavy Duty Meat CleaverI've purchased a Henkel's cleaver several years ago and though it is a good cleaver I never thought I would get one under $30.00 that would surpass a brand named cleaver! This Heavy Duty cleaver cuts through bone as easy as it cuts through meat and vegetables! Living in Hawaii we Huli Huli Pig a lot for parties and special events and this cleaver can chop up a whole pig in no time! My brother is an Executive Chef for a renown restaurant in Hawaii and he was impressed with the weight and cutting edge of this cleaver. I would recommend this cleaver to anyone who cooks for a living or for the home gourmet enthusiast.

This is a massive kitchen cleaver, but it handles well enough for more delicate chores than just chopping up chickens or rib bones. The blade is razor sharp and slices veggies well. Mincing a few pounds of meat takes less time than it does to clean my meat grinder!

This is a fantastic, heavy cleaver: chops off heads, feet, and body parts quickly and efficiently. However it quickly becomes obvious that the money saved was in the quality of the metal. It will very quickly rust and discolor from blood and other liquids. No big deal. Just scrub it off, wash it, dry it, and its ready for use again. This is its only weakness I've noticed in the short time I've had one.

Want Heavy Duty Meat Cleaver (8" long x 4" wide) Discount?

Great cleaver. Takes a razor edge but doesn't hold it as well as a higher end German knife (much less a Shun, japanese). This thing will replace your 8-10" chef knife if you let it. If you can handle the weight this puppy does it for you. You can chop, slice, mince, cleave, scoop, turn, beat and even use it as a spatula. As a line chef this was my go to during busy rushes, allowing me to perform a myriad of tasks with just one tool. Keep your steel handy though, the cleaver takes a great edge but is soft and needs frequent, light steeling on a fine steel to avoid having to hone it after heavy use....

The best part of this knife block is the option of putting the knives I use all the time in a handy holder for quick access. This Kapoosh holder does that for me. I took my old knife block off the counter and put the items like the meat fork, cleaver, and larger knives that I use rarely in the drawer.

I was a little concerned that the holder would be small but was pleasantly pleased with the space for the knives I use.

I was then able to put all the knives I use in the Kapoosh and have room for more knives if I so desire to add the cleaver or others later.

i would recommend this knife block for those wanting to customize which knives to have on display for your kitchen cooking use and function. Happy cutting.

Mac Knife Superior Bread Knife, 10-1/2-Inch

Mac Knife Superior Bread Knife, 10-1/2-InchFor slicing bread or carving roasts we need three important features:

1~ Quality steel that takes AND HOLDS a fine edge...

2~ L-O-N-G curved blade with serrated edge

3~ Ergonomic design.

Steel...

Obviously, if the steel won't get sharp, you can't cut effectively. Sharpen-ability is a function of the grain-size in the steel.

This commercially-produced steel takes an edge to 0.5 micron, so you can be sure it has sufficiently small grain size.

Durability is a different matter! The same metallurgical properties that make steel great for taking a fine edge also make the edge brittle. Steel formulations that are strong & resilient won't take the finest edge. There is always some compromise.

For a bread / carving knife like this one, the ideal trade-off is to have strong steel that maintains a minimum level of sharpness for a long time. ALL the MAC knives I have used and sharpened, including this one, have these qualities.

The Japanese are world-renown for their expertise in tool steel. They are also world leaders in modern production techniques that very closely mimic traditional qualities of hand-made tools. This MAC knife represents the current state-of-the-art in knife production. I do not know exactly HOW they accomplish this level of quality in large-scale production knives, but I know that ALL of them are consistent. Since I sharpen knives and tools for friends and family, I have a lot of experience with all kinds of sharpening. When you sharpen ANY tool, you get to know the steel. That's why I can say with confidence this is VERY good quality steel. After using my MAC for almost five years, I know it holds up well! ( Even in a house with people who don't appreciate tools or metallurgy!)

Blade length...

Alton Brown fans know he recommends the longest blade available for carving or slicing. He's right! The reasons are few and simple: You want your food to look good (without unsightly saw-marks), you want the food to appear tender, moist, easy-to-carve, AND you don't want the embarrassment of struggling to carve at the dinner table. LONG BLADES help! A LONG, slightly curved blade is easier to start and control. Many good carving kinves have this feature for that very reason. This one is among the longest in this price-range; slightly over 10 inches.

Ergonomic design...

When carving that thanksgiving turkey, a holiday ham or the sunday roast, or just slicing your daily bread, you MUST have the elevated handle. That makes it easier to see and feel your work, gives better control & leverage, AND it makes your job SAFER. You want your hand safely above the carving surface, especially at the critical moment when you go through the end of the slice. (which should ALWAYS be on the pull-stroke)

On Safety...

The sole feature I do not like about this model it that the end is a little too pointed. A carving knife requires a "slicing" motion: forward and back. A pointed tip can catch on the cutting board or in the food. That's why a rounded tip is safer. This small complaint is an esoteric design criticism, I know. But it is especially important for those who are NOT experts at carving & slicing. It is also important for those turkey carvers and late-night snack-makers who drink! (please do not ask me how I learned this)

Still that is a small complaint and easily remedied by one of two ways: You can round the tip. That is not expensive and will not damage the knife.

~OR~

You can BE CAREFUL! (a.k.a SOBER.)

Now that I've bored you with this tedious lecture & arcane facts, here is my opinion:

This is the BEST VALUE in a HIGH QUALITY slicing / carving knife I have seen. The only way to get any better is to pay double or triple the price for handmade knives. This gives me 97% of the edge-retention, sharpness etc. but costs less than a C-note. That's great for families with kids that don't care for daddy's tools, leave knives dirty or throw them in the dishwasher. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my kids, but weep in anguish when those crimes occur. Strangely, no one in our house has ever admitted to doing any of those things. At this price-point, an occasional trespass causes less gnashing of teeth.

The steel is superb for this application. It has sufficiently small grain-size to take a fine edge. It has the right metal formulation to keep that edge for a year of daily use (with regular honing and care of course!)

The tang-through, riveted construction is sturdy and attractive. The handle is "beefy" enough for manly carving duties and small enough that my daughter can easily slice crusty homemade bread. The balance and "feel" is professional & "fast". (obviously, that depends on your skill & experience)

I prefer a rounded tip, but that is a small complaint and easily remedied. A rounded tip allows you to use this ONE tool slice your bread, carve some ham and spread the mayo. That is efficient for late night snacks (made during commercials) and means you only have to clean one tool. (Why am I hungry right now?)

It is rare to find a chef's knife of this quality for under $100 today (2012). So despite my personal quibble with the pointed tip, I still believe this is a five-star value. If you are in the market for a fine bread / carving knife but can't justify $150 to $300 (or more) for the premium cutlery, this gets my vote for best choice.

Maybe when that redolent dilatory kid on my couch finally moves out, I'll spring for the Shun. That'll be fun!

Until then, I'll be using this MAC for my snack attack.

This is my third MAC brand knife, and I must say, I'm in love with them. I bought this knife to be my serrated bread/carving knife at work, and it far exceeds my expectations. It's a little larger than I imagined it, but it will carve or slice anything you have. I love it, and will buy many more MAC knives in the future.

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin Pro S 2-3/4-Inch High Carbon Stainless-Steel Peeling Knife

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin Pro S 2-3/4-Inch High Carbon Stainless-Steel Peeling KnifeI used this knife at a friends house. The balance is great. You can tell this is a quality knife. The small tip end is great for coring strawberries. The slightly wider area by the base makes it nice for pealing thin skinned items such at potatoes. This is a must for anyone that picks strawberries to core and freeze. I liked it so much I'm purchasing one for myself. You can't get anything like this at local store.

I used to watch my mom use a kife similar to this when I was a kid. I never new what it was for so when I saw it after purchasing other Henkels knives thru the years, I decided to give it a try. I use it for everything, especially peeling and cutting fruit and vegetables. A great knife and now I see why my mom used hers so much so many years ago.

I did a lot of research and settled on the Pro S series. I never realized how much difference good knives made. This is a great knife to have, extremely sharp and makes quick work of peeling just about anything. Even if you cook only occasionally, this is a knife for you.

I wasn't sure how I'd like the hook design but after using it I must say I absolutely love it. It works great for peeling (what its actually made for) but I also love to use it to cut and dice all sorts of things (pretty much anything smaller that I usually cut in my hands). They shape really helps cutting up or stemming things like Strawberries.

Boomerang Universal Waiter's Corkscrew Wine Opener - Black

Boomerang Universal Waiter's Corkscrew Wine Opener - Blackbeen bartending seven years. used countless tools. probably every type out there. this one is by far the best in my book. even though the "foilkut" circular foil cutter works well, i don't use it because i believe the foil should be cut a little lower (just below the collar or "finish"). that aside, it still has the best knife i've used; it's large, serrated, and sharp enough to leave a nice clean cut.

very durable product as well. i've opened hundreds of bottles with this opener and it still feels new. hinge doesn't wear out and get flimsy like those girly "two-step" openers.

i've paid twice the price for this same opener in stores. definitely worth it.

This is by far my favorite opener. I had a similar one for years and it broke. I ordered 3 this time, one as a gift, and the quality is better than the one I bought years ago. The foil cutter is especially easy to use, but there's also a blade if you want to be more traditional. I'm going to buy a bunch more for Christmas presents.

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Four Star 7-Piece Knife Set with Block

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Four Star 7-Piece Knife Set with BlockWhen first advised to buy Henckels by a friend and culinary aficionado, I hesitated; $200+ for a set of knives? But after purchasing this 7-piece Henckels set, I was pleasantly surprised. There are excellent knives and definitely worth the money.

I would advise you go to a store that carries most of the Henckels knife series before you purchase online. While I recommend all of Henckels' forged blades, the handles are key; there are at least 4 handle types, each with personal pro/cons depending on your hand shape and size. The four-star handles are mid-size poly; the five-star handles are similar but a bit larger and more ergonomic. Henckels also makes a "classic" handle, both in poly and wood, and also an all-metal handle.

Three years ago, my husband (who is a knifemaker himself) bought me this set as a birthday gift. He checked out the 5 star and Pro S lines as well, but decided on the four-star knives for me because they are designed for average-sized hands. Other than that, they are identical to the others except for a handle design that encloses the tang for less chance of rusting and easier care. No really -that's it. Save the extra thirty dollars for some flowers.

These knives perform beautifully and using them is like a dream after years of grocery store quality cutlery. Like any set of good knives, they require hand cleaning after each use (although I will guiltily admit to a few machine washings in a pinch). Take care of them, and they will take care of your food.

The set comes with every type of kitchen knife you will need, including those fantastic shears. I don't know how I ever used to live without the sharpener. After I had them both for awhile I realized how handy it was to have two sizes of bread knives. If you cannot live without a boning knife, this is available separately.

I can recommend Henckels' Four Star knives without reservation for any home cook.

Buy Zwilling J.A. Henckels Four Star 7-Piece Knife Set with Block Now

First, I can't attest that these knives are better than similar knives by other makers, such as Wusthof or Global. I did my share of research based on online reviews but I haven't had the privilege of working with knives by other high end manufacturers. My wife and I mostly limit ourselves to preparing relatively simple foods.

This being said, the experience I can relate with absolute authority is the sheer joy I've felt using the Henckels 4-Star knives over the past several months after previously being stuck with no-name, bargain basement serrated knives.

Our old knives were given to us as a wedding gift. Over two years, what had been a 15 knife set was whittled (pun intended...) down to 7 knives, four of which now have loose handles. Two of the knives in this set had blades which broke, and the others had the blade break loose from the handle since they were not full tang. Of course quality, or lack thereof, was just one major deficiency of this set. No, the primary problem was their awful performance. The handles were poorly contoured. The blades were light and thin, wandering aimlessly through the food. Densely serrated edges would shred our food. Ingredients clung to the blades, which were so flimsy we were continually worried that they'd break in midstroke. They also became stained over time, and showed signs of spot rusting

Why am I detailing our lackluster, dollar store quality knives in such detail? Because I think it's crucial to illustrate why it's absolutely NECESSARY, if you do any amount of cooking at all, to buy good quality knives as soon as you possibly can!

In contrast with the old knives, the Henckels cut through our ingredients with authority and precision. Food slides off of them easily. Handles are solid and fit the hand perfectly, allowing for optimal control. They are weighty in comparison to cheaper knives, but superbly balanced. These handling characteristics mean that we slice through food so effortlessly, we really don't feel the extra heft. Also, because they are so efficient, we find that we fly through cutting chores that would take twice as long with the lesser quality knives. In the end, I now get tasks done much faster, yet more deftly. I cut thinner, smaller, more accurately. It's a WORLD of difference!

Anyone who says that you can get by with cheapo knives and don't need 'them fancy 'spensive knives...' is leading you astray. They can't possibly have EVER used good knives. They are advising based on ignorance. Even the simplest task is made better with our Henckels set. Truly, knives like these are NOT just for chefs and serious amateurs. They are for anyone who cooks on even a semiregular basis. They are invaluable if you like cooking fresh food at home yet don't have a lot of time. Do yourself a favor, pass by whatever is being hawked by the hucksters on HSN and the late night infomercials and aim for quality.

These might cost four times as much as lesser brands, but they will last far longer, and make your time in the kitchen immeasurably less stressful. In fact, they restore the pleasure to cooking.
