Zelco Mangia 3 Piece Set
I had the original Zelco Mangia from years ago, and while the new one is a touch lighter in weight (thinner gauge metal), there is no difference in quality or construction. In fact, I prefer the lighter weight for traveling :) It feels less industrial and a little more sophisticated and modern.I have used this picnicing, traveling, at work and have a few in my car for impromptu picnics. There is always a set in my travel bag.
The only issue I have with the new Mangia is that the inside edge of the hollow knife handle is sometimes sharp and unfinished. Be careful!
What it is and how it's put together:
If you haven't already, click on the detailed product photo above:
* The knife blade is just under 3", actual serrated cutting area is just under 2.5". The 1/2" remaining is the end that is next to the handle and is flat and blunt to prevent accidentally cutting yourself while opening and closing the utensil.
* The handle is a hollow square tube with the knife welded solidly inside at an angle. This divides the square tube into 2 equally sized triangles.
* The fork and the spoon are wrought from a solid sheet of stainless. The handles are bent inwards and form a shallow "V"
* The V-shaped handles of the fork and spoon slide into each of the triangles formed by the welded knife.
* The knife is only welded halfway inside the handle. The bottom half contains one large pinch-spring that holds the spoon and fork in place when inserted.
* Because 1 large spring holds both the fork and the spoon in place, the first utensil out and the last utensil in are the hardest and this most likely when accidents happen.
How to safely remove and insert the fork and spoon from the knife:
Removing:
1) Spoon side facing you.
2) Hold the Mangia in your hand thumbs on the spoon, where the bowl becomes the spoon-handle. Push your thumbs firmly and gently forward (making sure your right thumb is on the spoon and away from the serrated edge of the knife) until the tip of the spoon slides over the tip of the knife.
3) Continue sliding or flip the Mangia over (fork side up) and grasp the widest part of the spoon and pull it out and away (in the direction AWAY from the serrated edge of the knife).
4) Flip Mangia over again (fork side down), and repeat step 3) with the fork. Again, out and AWAY from the serrated edge.
Putting the Mangia back together:
1) Holding fork at widest point by the tines, insert into knife handle.
2) Push all the way down until the end of the fork touches the spring at the bottom.
3) Insert the handle of the spoon.
4) Using a firm surface like a table or countertop, push the spoon into the Mangia as far as it will go.
5) Hold the spoon at the widest part and gently and firmly push it in the rest of the way into the Mangia so that it touches the spring at the bottom.
How to get the cover on:
* The blunt end of the blade sticks out beyond the handle by a bit. This has to fit inside the cover.
* Make sure the fork and the spoon are fully inserted and touch the bottom end of the spring in the knife handle.
* The Mangia fits together the way it first came in the box: Serrated edge facing left, fork above and spoon below.
Additional notes:
* The hollow tube the knife has for a handle is actually much more comfortable than it looks. It adds weight and balance.
* The Mangia is heavier and sturdier than many cheap utensils out there. These are not flimsy utensils and are not easily bent.
* The serrated edge is very sharp and strong.
* The brushed finish on the inside lower 1" of the fork and spoon will get marked by the spring mechanism over time.
* Do not leave the knife soaking in the sink. The spring might rust because it is made of a different quality metal.
* The Mangia comes packed in a box that can be easily wrapped for gift giving. (See added photo)I like these and bought four total different colored caps. Some seem to be from a different production design because the caps secure themselves differently. I love usig these for packed lunches as they stay together and travel well. Woudl be five stars except that sometimes certain spoons or forks can get stuck in the knife part, I think this is from different production runs or something Most of the time they all fit together well and come apart easily to use. But when they stick you have to use force the spoon and fork help sheild you form the knife edge, but if you grab the spoon and fork with your thumb right behond the spoons bowl and have to yank them apart it can slip and cut you, like it did to me. Maybe I should have just gotten all with the same color cap cover so they would all be consistant

I only bought this set in order to have covered silverware to keep in my desk at work. The case does not stay closed or fit properly. Even when I remove the silverware entirely, I cannot get it to close, let alone stay closed.Other than that, the silverware itself is sturdy and fits together well. If you do not need a case to cover the part that goes in your mouth, I would recommend this set. If you plan on traveling with it or keeping in a drawer and want the case for sanity reasons, don't bother. When both Form and Function come together like this, the result is magic. You could set a table with these, they're so clever. Or you could take them on safari. The design is both elegant and practical. You'll be happy you own one even if you seldom use it. As travel flatware goes, it's a brilliant work of art.We took Mangia tool sets to China, where knives and forks are not always available. The knife, fork and spoon pack neatly into the plastic cover, and a set is not too heavy to carry around. The cover could be a tad larger it is a snug fit, and the cover on one of our sets cracked when snapped shut when the implements were not quite nested together perfectly. The cover was handy following a meal, when the cover could be snapped over the implements and the food residue was prevented from making a mess inside a pocket or purse.

Schrade SCHBBQ2 Bbq Kit Royal Red, Black, And White Canvas Case
I was really looking forward to getting this and upon receipt I noticed a piece was missing. I was disappointed mainly because I couldn't get a hold of anyone to let them know of the issue. Theb items that I did receive are great, would of liked to have received what I paid for. This BBQ kit had a good case and a handle so it certainly does not take much room in storage. But because of the low quality of the tools, I am giving it a 4 star (considering the cheap price also). It might be good for 2~3 years of normal summer bbq needs, but if you are inviting guests I would suggest to use something else.Buy Schrade SCHBBQ2 Bbq Kit Royal Red, Black, And White Canvas Case Now
J.A. Henckels International Fine Edge Pro 3-Piece Knife Set
Purchased these to go with a 7 inch Henckels International santoku that I've been using for years, and the phrase that comes to mind to describe all Fine Edge cutlery is "good enough." No, it isn't restaurant quality, and yes, if you put these through the dishwasher they'll tarnish and probably even start to rust (any metal designated as "stainless" is rust resistant rather than rust proof, and reviewers of other Henckels products complaining about rust and tarnish probably aren't treating their knives very well). As a graduate student on a budget who enjoys cooking, but doesn't always have the time for it, these knives are an ideal compromise between price and quality. Be aware that they will occasionally require sharpening I've had the santoku for almost three years and run it through a commercially available ceramic disk sharpener every few months and it still cuts very nicely and should probably be hand-washed for longest life. With that little bit of maintenance, however, this three piece set can meet nearly all of your cooking needs (it meets all of mine, but then I don't often dress poultry, filet my own fish, or do much that would require a cleaver or really subtle boning knife) for quite a nice price.Having sharp, quality knives in the kitchen is essential. I have owned this set for a couple years and it is still in great shape. Good form, easy to hold and they stay sharp with the right care.Buy J.A. I'm a senior in college that has recently moved into my first apartment and obviously needed to get some kitchen essentials without breaking my very malnourished bank account. I came across these three Henckels knives at a pretty decent price and decided to go with it. The knives are amazing I only wish I could find a good yet cheap knife sharpener to go along with it as they (like any other knives) will lose their fine sharp edge after continued use without sharpening. If you're looking for a cheap and essential knife set with good quality this is the product for you.Read Best Reviews of J.A. Henckels International Fine Edge Pro 3-Piece Knife Set Here
These knives are wonderful. When they are new they are extremely sharp. It is important to be very careful when cleaning them, because it is so easy to cut yourself. I have had my set for over a year now. They are still very sharp, however I notice they require sharpening more frequently now to retain their sharpness. If you are the average cook, these knives will serve you well.Want J.A. Henckels International Fine Edge Pro 3-Piece Knife Set Discount?
Purchased two sets for heavy duty everyday use, and love the short paring knife. Replacement of SAME that had worn out from use. While the blades themselves are of the same quality, there is something off about the handle material. it looks a bit beat up and even with handwashing, it isn't looking so good. However, the knives themselves are of great quality and perfect if you like a smooth edge that you can sharpen.Boker Wood Magnetic Knife Block
I purchased this as a Warehouse Deal. I initially wasn't sure I'd keep it but I like a lot now. I was looking for a knife block that took up less space than my old block and that was a cleaner place to keep my knives. With the magnetic block, I like that the knife blades are all visible, so I can see what knife I'm reaching for, and that the holder doesn't collect dust like the slots in traditional knife blocks.I ordered the Olive and the one I received is much darker than the picture. Mine almost perfectly matches the Pakkawood handles on my LamsonSharp Silver series knives. It doesn't look as dark as the Makassar option (which looks like a dark walnut on my screen), but it is much darker than what is pictured for Olive. The wood is finished nicely, smooth with no rough edges. (Mine had a very small dent in the bottom front part of the base, but I was buying a used item, Warehouse Deal, and the dent was no big deal.) Since the color works for me, it was okay that it didn't match the picture.
Initially, I wasn't sure about the design. When taking a knife off, if you just pull the knife away, the holder tips over because the magnets are so strong. But removing the knife with a gentle twist (away from sharp side of blade) works. It took getting used to but now I don't have to think about it.
The knife holder will only hold one knife per panel. There is a magnetic rod in each panel right down the center. You can't see it but can feel where it is when placing a knife. The knifes are held straight and can't be off-center. So, you can't put two small knives on one panel. The panels are also not magnet on the backsides.
The shortest panel is 5 3/4 inches high. Each gets about 3/4" taller, up to the tallest, which is 9 1/2 inches (and it works for my 10" bread knife). Each of the panels is 2 1/4" wide except the back one, which is 2 1/2" wide. You can only put a knife with a blade wider than 2", or wider than the panels, on the back panel. (I have a vegetable cleaver on my back panel, which works great to hold a wide knife.)
This block is so much nicer than the old traditional block I had. It does consume less counter space, and the knives are not slanted forward covering more counter space. It has a simple and unique design, and it displays knives well. I think it is a little bit on the expensive side but I couldn't find anything else that I thought was better, and I looked at a lot of different options. I'm glad I was able to get a Warehouse Deal on it. After using it for a while, I really like it and hope to never have to replace it.I was having trouble finding a knife holder that would hold my Shun knives, because they had a different shape than the typical knife. This holder works well, and the knives are very accessible.

Received this in the mail today. Very pleased with my purchase so far. Magnets are indeed strong, so the "twist and pull" method is working well.Read Best Reviews of Boker Wood Magnetic Knife Block Here
After much waiting, I finally received this magnetic block in Makassar. It's beautiful. The wood is slightly ligher than the pic, but it's still an extremely nice color of wood.. it matches my kitchen perfectly, and it doesn't take up *that* much counter real estate (not any more than a normal block would). The magnets that hold the knives are very strong and hold all of my knives with ease. I own a combination of normal knives as well as ones that are titanium coated. This knife block holds all of them solidly.
After much searching for a magnetic knife block, I finally found this one.. and I couldn't be happier.
Whether you're searching for a magnetic block sanitation benefits (knives aren't dropped into damp, bacteria-filled knife slots.. as is the case with traditional blocks).. or if you're just in it for the aesthetics of having nice knives out on display.. you can't go wrong with this block.

No holes in the knife block means no roaches, and no space for them to hide near and contaminate the blades. The block has 7 spots (the vertical boards) for knives, but there are actually 2 magnets in each of the boards so if you use it for display you can pretty much put 13 knives on it. The magnets are strong, so the knives will NOT be falling off.
As another reviewer mentioned, the way to take the knives off of the magnets is to hold the knife by the handle and twist it off, not just pull it off.
The makassar wood is just a bit lighter than in the picture. I haven't used it for kitchen knives so I'm not sure if the wood wears down or scratches, but something tells me this knife block will look great even after some use. Boker makes some wonderful products; very happy with their subcom, ceramic anti-grav and boker kal-09 folders also.
I use one for displaying folding knives (the knives are stored properly on the top magnets, and I folded 6 folding knives and affixed their spines to the bottom magnets; looks sweet) and am going to buy another for kitchen knives. Superb!
KitchenAid Stainless Steel 14-Piece Cutlery Set
I received this knife set as a wedding present almost four years ago and they're holding up well. The steak knives are very sharp and perfect for cutting meat. I don't use the large knives very often, but when we need them to carve meat, they perform well. The smaller knives are used on a daily basis. With the addition of a nice knife sharpener, I'm thrilled with these knives. These knives enable you to make precise cuts with minimal effort. These knifes are so sharp and really sleek looking. I love them. My husband and I had a Kitchen Aid knife set when we first got married, which we loved, until we stupidly ruined them by leaving them in a chemical bath to keep their shine. We finally got a new set and we won't be making that mistake agian. I don't think there are very many other brands of knifes that compare to Kitchen Aid quality without being super, super expensive. This particular set is a little smaller than our old set but it works out because our new kitchen is smaller, so the proportions work. These knifes look great sitting on my counter and they are fantastic tools to any of my cutting needs.Read Best Reviews of KitchenAid Stainless Steel 14-Piece Cutlery Set Here
Bought this set of knives a couple months ago but just recently started using them. It is a very attractive knife set & looks great on our countertop but one of the knives has already started rusting after a couple of hours in the sink which leaves me to believe that they are obviously not completely stainless. However the description does say to dry immediately after washing & they were very inexpensive, so of course they aren't top of the line or anything. All & all they were a good price & pretty to look at but I would not recommend.Want KitchenAid Stainless Steel 14-Piece Cutlery Set Discount?

I am fanatical about keeping my knives sharp and have purchased countless sharpeners. This one is my favorite. A few swipes really defines the edge of my knives and I would recommend it to anyone who likes to keep their knives razor sharp. After years of using my Chicago Cutlery sharpening steel I just couldn't keep a good edge on the knives any more. This sharpener quickly got the knives back in shape to where I can just dress them with the steel again. The abrasive is adhered to a ferrous material so I can hang it on my magnetic knife holder. I wouldn't use this as my only sharpener you really want to finish with a finer grit.Buy The Ultimate Edge Model 10NC Coarse Diamond Sharpening Steel Now

I fell in love with this at first sight -it resonates with my rather odd sense of humor, I guess. I decided to take a chance on it -I needed a set of decent knives for my "home away from home," and after reading the reviews, I ordered. It's very sturdy -heavy plastic, it arrives in two pieces, and it takes only seconds to mount the figure onto the base.
The knives are very good quality, nicely weighted stainless steel. The "block" has heavy clear plastic sleeves in back to protect both the knives and the user, and the knives are secured in place with hidden magnets that "grab" each knife as it is slipped in place -nice safety feature.
This is a fairly large unit -14+" tall, about 8-9" in diameter. I purchased the white one, to work with the rest of my counter-top appliances, but it comes in several other colors (red, green, black, chrome).
This would be a great housewarming gift for a divorced friend. All I have to say is that this knife set is the S-word. Once I found out about it, I knew that I needed one in my life. I've recieved countless compliments and questions from guests who come to my house, and it serves as a great conversation piece. And the knives are great too! Stainless steel, and definately sharp enough to do the job. An awesome gift for anyone who's into this sort of thing, and kinda even likes cooking.

I bought this more as an art piece for my girlfriend. The knives seem to be able to cut stuff although they aren't top notch. It's a hard plastic with non-removable translucent sheaths that stick out of the back.Okay I had no need for knives as I already had a set but I saw these on here and had to order them! These fit perfectly on my counter, the plastic sleeves are great for safety reasons and how I have them situated on my counter top you really can't see that part of them. After buying a bread machine, we now no longer buy our bread. Everyone (children and adults) cuts their own bread, at the table, to the slice thickness they prefer. With my old bread knives, the slices quite often came out looking like an ocean surface (waves and all). After upgrading to this Henckel (to match my other Henckel knives), we can now all cut straight slices. It doesn't matter if the bread just came out of the bread machine (yum) or if the bread was baked yesterday. No longer is the French bread (hard crusts) squashed while we try to slice it. This is definitely the "best thing since sliced bread"!This knife's best at slicing tomatoes and other veggies. It's a bit short for cutting big peasant loaves, and the straight blade makes it harder to cut at an angle down through the bread, since the sharp point, while great for starting a cut through an obstinate veggie skin, can get stuck in your cutting board. The serrations work great, however, slicing through both crust and soft inner breadness.Buy Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin Four Star 8-Inch High Carbon Stainless Steel Bread knife Now
I've had this knife for over ten years and have never had it sharpened. It still works great. Have had the knives for over 15 years and still using them. Simply had to replace lost or damaged knives. Damage was result of garbage disposalTruBamboo Palm Beach Small Bamboo Cutting Board
I'm tired of small unusable cutting boards. This board has enough size to work on a few projects at once. Keep in mind wood and bamboo boards must be cared for. Get some mineral oil and wipe your wood boards down periodically to prevent them from drying out and cracking. If you aren't into maintaining quality products you probably don't need a good knife or board so just go to Taco Bell and save yourself some time ;)I've had this cutting board 2 weeks now, and I'm thoroughly enjoying my first wood cutting board.I had been happily slicing and dicing away on plastic cutting boards until I did a little research--shock, gasp, hand to the forehead--I discovered that wily harmful bacteria can get trapped in the small nicks on plastic boards.
This board is really beautiful to behold. Plus, it is large enough for me to cut up multiple veggies at once (Eureka! I can avoid overcooking the first veggies I chop since I always underestimate how long it takes me to cut up the next round). The lip around the edge seems like it will likely be handy at some point, but it hasn't mattered to me one way or another thus far. I do keep the board out on the kitchen counter since it is just so beautiful to look at it (and it seems too cumbersome and over-sized to store elsewhere).
I also bought the Howard Products Butcher Block Conditioner to use with the board. Despite my impatient excitement to use the board, I applied the conditioner and let it sit overnight when it first arrived. I also conditioned it after the first few uses.
I have noticed that it wobbles just the slightest bit on the counter, but not enough to be noticeable while actually chopping. I only wash it with hot water and soap in the sink and quickly dry it with paper towels after. It is definitely a labor of love keeping it in shape, but it's so worth it!
Summary: Simple bamboo cutting board. Large. Beautiful. Durable. Treat her right and she'll treat you right. Happy chopping!

Victorinox Cutlery 6-Inch Semi-Stiff Boning Knife, Black Fibrox Handle
I've had this knife in my block for a while now, and I'm still impressed. For a cheap knife, the stamped blade performs very well. The edge is razor sharp from the factory, and stays that way with minimal effort. Treat this knife well and you will be very happy.
That said, before you buy, give some thought to whether you want a straight or curved blade. Victorinox makes a similar knife with a straight blade, which may be preferable depending upon style.
Don't be put off by the lack of flashy "Three Rivet" styling. This knife is all business.Would I like to have a $100 Shun boning knife? Sure who wouldn't, but at 1/5 the price this does the same job just as well. Seems to have held it's edge after a few uses and I'm sure will over time with regular steeling and occasional professional sharpening. Like all the Fibrox knives the handle is nicely textured and gives you a secure grip even when your hands get wet.

Chroma Kid(M) Captain Cook Kids Small Chef Knife
I bought two of these for my (then) 7 year olds, along with a child size cut resistant glove that I also found on amazon. They love to help out in the kitchen and were ready for the next step. This is a real, sharp knife, so it should not be used unsupervised. Even with supervision (and the glove), we've had a couple of nicks, but I think my kids now know how to properly use and handle a chef's knife, and they're only 8. It is perfectly sized for little hands. I would like it even better if it came with a guard for storing. I don't think this knife is for every child. But for those who show an interest in cooking and who have at least one parent who is willing to stand over them and make sure they know how to use it (and who is fully aware that they will get cut and that is sometimes the only way they will learn), then this is a good piece of equipment sized and weighted for younger cooks.I bought this for my 5 yr old little chef. Safe, actually chops. Nice sturdy handle. He feels like he is using a chef knife just like me in the kitchen. Not so sharp that I have to freak out when he uses it, and I wouldn't recommend for a 3 yr old, but sharp enough to do the job well!Wusthof Classic Ikon 8 inch Serrated Bread Knife & Cutting Board

Trizor Professional 3 Piece Everyday Knife Set
I am not a professional chef and have not owned a large variety of "good" knives in my lifetime. I am also on a limited budget and for the life of me, I can't imagine what I was thinking in paying this much for such a limited set of knives. I have, though, worked in a number of restaurants and learned the benefits of sharp knives. Also, I love to cook.I have owned this set of knives for about 10 years now, and have used them almost exclusively during that time. In fact, I do pretty much everything with just the chef's and utility knives. (Someone -my son, my mom -broke the tip off of the paring knife a few years back, though I don't know who or how, as neither had come forward to take responsibility, lol).
I absolutely LOVE these knives. The weight, balance, and material of these knives are as good as it gets -both functionally and in comfort-in-use. Definitely the best knives I have ever had in my hands. In 10 years, they have only begun to noticeably lose their edge over the last couple years. I do really need to invest in the Trizor sharpener so as not to lose the "patented" Trizor edge.
Even on a limited budget -certainly because I enjoy cooking so much -I have never regretted this purchase. They have my highest recommendation.
