Norpro 713 Salt and Pepper Shakers, 2 Piece Set

Norpro 713 Salt and Pepper Shakers, 2 Piece SetUpon receipt of the shakers I filled the salt shaker with salt, picked it up and the handle fell off. They are made of extremely thin metal and the rivets holding the handle on pulled through the side of the canister.

Save your money...

I had these salt and pepper shakers one day and the handle fell off of the salt and not 2 day later it fell off of the pepper. Not good!!!

Nice color and good size.

Adorbs! But... the pepper shaker isn't true to color shown in picture.

It's hunter green; not olive. That is all.

I feel like such a loser being this excited about a salt and pepper shaker LOL! But really these are wonderful! They hold a lot of product in so you don't have to constantly refill. The grip in the handle is perfect and makes for comfortable use and the amount of salt (or pepper) that comes out is just right. I coudln't love these more. This is actually the second set I am buying because one day we were having our house cleaned and afterwards we realized my set was gone! Haven't seen them again no matter how hard I've looked! So I am getting another set as I have found myself missing these so much. Highly recommend!

Hello

I bought these shakers and there are 2 problems the first is the color that I received are dark green while what the website shows is olive green the second is the handles of the shakers are very weak and it jiggles actually I received the pepper shaker handle with a broken handle and the shakers are poorly made and it doesn't deserve a 13 $ as a price 3 $ is more then enough and I don't recommend you guy's to buy these shakers .

Thank you.

J.A. Henckels International Classic 8-Inch Stainless-Steel Carving Knife

J.A. Henckels International Classic 8-Inch Stainless-Steel Carving Knife(2008 HOLIDAY TEAM)This mid-priced line of Henckel knives, called "Classic" by the company, is a full-tang, single-piece, three-rivet line with sturdy black plastic handles. The handles are notched at the end to prevent the hand from sliding off during use. Although they are not razor sharp right from the package, their edges are sharp enough for the average cook. According to Henckel, all knives in this line are dishwasher safe, but you should expect more rapid dulling under the harsh conditions.

The slicer has a long straight blade that curves up gently two-thirds of the way toward the tip. The tip is extremely sharp, allowing for an exact and easy puncture to begin cutting. This knife is balanced evenly between blade and handle to make straight slicing more comfortable.

This is a useful blade to have in the kitchen, as it is great both for slicing melon and carving meat.

This knife is by far my favorite knife. I have used many other knives (chicago, farberware, cuisine...), but this knife has better balance and stays sharp much longer. Going to get the chef's knife next.

I accidentally purchased this knife while attempting to purchase the 8" Henckles chef's knife from the same line. I'll call it a happy accident because I'm quite pleased with it. It was sharp out of the box and has maintained it's edge very well.

This size knife is great for cutting in areas where the wider blade of a chef's knife gets in the way. I use it frequently for finishing up pineapple as the narrow blade turns easily to follow the contours if the skin.

The fit and finish is excellent and the knife feels very comfortable in the hand.

Shun DM0750 Honing Steel

Shun DM0750 Honing SteelThe amount of bad information here is unbelievable. This is not a sharpener. It doesn't have a hand guard or a slot. This does not have a plastic handle and isn't made in China. It will not scratch your knives if you use it correctly. It is not too short for a 12" blade.

To my surprise it is capable of turning a chefs knife into a boning knife rather quickly, but if one follows the instructions on the box and uses a VERY light touch for stroking at the correct angle this high end tool will do you right. The handle is the same as on all classic knives. It is made for honing, not removing metal like a ceramic stick.

The angle guide is not to rub your knife against, just to help you get the right angle before you move down & stroke it. Holding it correctly, you do not have to change hands, just spin the steel 180 degrees. The flat part of the angle guide is 16 degrees for Shun knives. The rest of the angle guide is 20 degrees for the cheaper European steels and don't bother honing grocery store steel just pull it through a $1.29 sharpener.

This is a great tool if you learn how to use it the correct way.

Hilditch

I recently purchased this honing steel and perhaps I can sort out some of the confusion. In short, it does not damage your knives (unless you don't know how to use it), it is for honing (not sharpening), and my box says Made In China. The handle looks and feels exactly like the handles on the knives, and according to Shun's website, is made of the same material.

First, the steel performs like it should, and I have no problems with it's performance, design, or construction. I give it 5 stars for these reasons. The guard is handy for its flat side, helping to correctly angle the blade to 16 degrees--the angle at which the blades are made.

This is a honing steel, not sharpening, as has been said before. When a knife is used, the blade begins to develop small bends in the blade. A honing rod simply straightens out those bends, putting the blade back in alignment again. Of course, eventually the blade will no longer have the perfect edge it once did, and will need to be sharpened (that is, removal of material to make a new edge). This steel does not make your knives dull, jagged, ugly, or otherwise damaged. Unless I suppose, you don't know how to properly use a honing steel.

The box I'm holding here clearly says Made In China. My Shun knives are marked on the blade as made in Japan. That being said, I don't believe that it's of an inferior quality--if you handed me the steel I'd have no reason to believe that it was of a lower quality in things like the handle or craftsmanship as my knives at first glance. Also, I can't say for certain, but perhaps different runs of this product were made in different places. That would at least explain the confusion over where this product is made.

According to Shun's website, this handle is made of "Ebony-black PakkaWood". If it's truly made of some sort of plastic, it's indistinguishable from the look and feel of the knives. The only discernible difference I found is that it sounds different when tapped on, but that may very well be from a different size or shape of tang. There is however, a steel on Shun's website with a Co-Polymer handle. It's product number is 9990, and the handle looks very different from this one, almost like a big black plastic piece. The product pictured is a DM0750.

As a note, I have no affiliation with KAI Corp, Kershaw, or anyone similar (noting my reviewer name).

Buy Shun DM0750 Honing Steel Now

I recently purchased some Shun Elite knives. They cut like a light saber right out of the box but after a couple of months they dulled slightly. The Shun honing steel brought them right back to life. I really like the guide on the steel. It ensures you get the correct angle for Shun knives.

Shun Sharpening Steel

I use Japanese, French and German knives in my kitchen as well as a well known German brand's sharpening steel. I was constantly frustrated by it's inability to hone a blade and assumed I was using it incorrectly. I viewed video after video of correct honing techniques to make sure I had it right but to no avail.

I heard that Shun produced a good sharpener-honer so decided to purchase one. I have never looked back! The minute I put a blade to it, I could feel the difference. It realigns and maintains the edge on both the Japanese and European blades every time I use it.

One word of caution, it has a slot to guide the 15% angle required for Japanese blades, but this can scratch your knife and spoil it's aesthetics.

Otherwise, go and get one, you won't regret it!

Want Shun DM0750 Honing Steel Discount?

Great honing steel that is a bit longer than others I looked at (seems to help a bit for the bigger knives) and an attractive taper (not sure that matters, but it looks nice). I've had it for a while now and use it frequently. Despite an occasional clumsy collision, this steel slides smoothly and shows no nicks. It straightens the edge on my (mostly) mid-grade knives with ease.

Another reviewer claimed the handle was plastic. Perhaps he was mistaken, or perhaps he had a different version. It does almost "feel" plastic due to the hard resin finish, but mine appears to be the same pakka wood as on my Shun knives (though the steel lacks the metal endcap the knives have).

Aesthetics are open to debate, but I think it looks much nicer than most, and performs better than any other I've used for daily straightening.

Shun Pro 6-1/2-Inch Nakiri Knife

Shun Pro 6-1/2-Inch Nakiri KnifeI have several Shun Pro knives, and they are probably my favorites out of my (ridiculously large) collection of kitchen cutlery. This particular knife is one of the most useful of all. However, knives of this design are probably not the best choice for the "average" cook.

First, recognize that this is a single-bevel knife of Japanese design. Moreover, the "flat" side is actually slightly concave. This design has advantages and disadvantages. First the advantages. It takes a very sharp edge, and the excellent, relatively hard steel holds this edge very well. The concave "back" allows the knife to pass through foods much more easily than a conventional knife.

Now the disadvantages. the single bevel causes the knife to "move" toward the flat side when you are making a cut. With a little practice, you can compensate for this and produce perfect, paper-thin slices -but it does take a bit of practice. A second disadvantage is that you should not sharpen knives of this type with typical sharpeners. The beveled side should be sharpened to 17-20 degrees, and the flat side should be finished at near 0 degrees. Unless you are experienced and equipped properly, you should have this type of knife professionally sharpened. It should not be run through an electric sharpener -even the Chef's Choice, which works OK for conventional knives.

The blade has fairly little "rocker." It is best used for slicing and chopping (as opposed to the type of rocking action you can use with a typical chef's knife).

This is an absolutely wonderful piece of cutlery if you are prepared to (1) learn the characteristics of a single-bevel knife; (2) sharpen it properly.

The KAI Shun Pro Nakiri knife is really an excellent kitchen product for traditionally styled Japanese chefs and average cooks alike. This knife, like all of the Shun knives, is extremely sharp; Shun knives are at least as sharp as Global knives, albeit with much more comfortable handles. This is as good as it gets when it comes to chopping up large vegetables, but will also work for mincing onions or dicing garlic cloves. Although it looks somewhat like a meat cleaver, it really is not intended to be used as such; if you are looking for a knife that will cut both meat and vegetables, the Shun Classic santoku knife may be more your thing. Also, please note that the blade on a nakiri knife is one-sided, and may be awkward for some tasks. If you want a great knife for splitting large vegetables such as pumpkins or squash, however, than this is your knife.

Buy Shun Pro 6-1/2-Inch Nakiri Knife Now

This knife is incredibly sharp right out of the box. I had some trepidation about using it, because I'm left-handed (they've since come out with a left-handed version, but it didn't exist when I got mine a year and a half ago), but I haven't had a problem. I use it for vegetables, fruit, and herbs, and occasionally for non-bony meat, and it's an excellent slicer. Although it looks like a cleaver, it should not be used like one; it'd be a shame to wreck such a beautiful knife.. The knife is beautifully finished and fits my medium-sized hand perfectly. This is the first Shun knife I've had, but it will not be the last. It's pricey, but well worth it.

I got these knives as a trial based on good Amazon reviews. I wasn't sure if they would hold an edge, since they are stamped knives, but figured I'd try them for a while to see how the edge held up. However, I was shocked when after only 2 weeks of use cutting veggies and fruits I found several burrs and nicks on the knives! I only use a quality wood cutting board like this: Proteak Teak Cutting Board Rectangle 16-by-12-by-2-Inch End Grainto cut with my knives, so these knives couldn't hold up to gentle daily use. That is NOT quality and certainly not worth the money they are asking for this product. That is more what I would expect from a cheap no name brand from a local variety store! I've returned them for a FULL refund! I would not recommend these knives at all. If you want a good knife set go for the Wustof or Henckles brands. But make sure you get the good ones, not the cheaper marketed ones. Henckel does sell knives made in china, I personally would not recommend them. I've used Henckel knives before and still have a small set I've had for 25 years and they are still good. The forged steel is what you want not the stamped low quality knives or made in china knives.

2-Piece 12" x 15" Flexible Food Chopping Cutting Mats

2-Piece 12' x 15' Flexible Food Chopping Cutting MatsThe product itself looks like it'd be great if I bought it from a store, but the boards were folded in half when they were sent. Now they have ugly creases in the middle, which I don't mind as much as the fact that the boards cannot flatten out anymore!! A non-flat board means food rolling either to the center of the board if I use it concave side up, or worse, off it if I flip it over. Highly annoying.

I bought these to take camping. I liked the cheap price and that they are lightweight and can be rolled up. I like them so much that I use them daily at home. I keep several tucked behind the knife block. The mats do show scoring from slicing on them, but I don't view that as a problem.

Tramontina Commercial Foodservice Quality 4" Paring Knives - 2 Knife Set.

Tramontina Commercial Foodservice Quality 4' Paring Knives - 2 Knife Set.Everything is great with these knives, but I like a slightly larger knife for a paring knife. Otherwise the knife cuts well and goes into the dishwasher which was important to me.

This style is known as a HOTEL PARER.

The characteristics of that style are the large simple handle and the spear point blade.

Tramontina knives are known in the industry for excellent quality. Contrary to the only other review,

the 4" blade is, in fact, about the longest blade commonly used on a knife called a "paring knife".

It's a good size for its purpose, but the more common 3 1/4" blade is certainly more popular, but not better.

That is a matter of preference.

The knives are sharp from the factory, which is not always the case with many brands. They are also thin blades which are very easy to re-sharpen using a honing stone.

A great buy!

Rada Cutlery Cooks Knife, Made in USA

Rada Cutlery Cooks Knife, Made in USA, Aluminum HandleI love these knives. I have owned Rada Cutlery knives for years, and always have been impressed with the quality of the blades. They stay sharp for quite a while and sharpen easily with a hand-held sharpener. Highly recommended!!

I got this knife along with the Rada Cutlery Cooks Utility Knife, Made in USA, Dishwasher Safe Black Handle. Both of these are similar sized, one, slightly larger. And the knives are superbly made, well finished the shiniest knives I've ever seen and more importantly they simply work. It's unbelievably smooth, chopping vegetables and they look like they will hold their edge for quiet a long while.

The best part... the price. I've still to get over how little they cost.

One thing (of not much consequence): Having used expensive and heavier knifes, these (initially) feel extremely light and flimsy. That's a totally wrong impression one gets. It's a different and delightful story once we start using it.

Buy Rada Cutlery Cooks Knife, Made in USA Now

I'm a knife enthusiast. I read bladeforums and collect knives. I bought this Rada Cutlery Cooks Knife to try it out because it's cheap and made in the USA. I purchased the aluminum handle version.

Construction: This knife has a very thin blade profile and it's very light. I like the blade shape and the length is fine. The blade came highly polished and the handle was smooth all the way around with no rough spots anywhere. It's very easy to grip. The blade is not full tang, but that isn't important for a cooking knife. A full tang adds unnecessary weight and strength for the types of tasks you'll be using the knife for. If you want an outdoors/bushcraft/survival knife then get one with a full tang. Kitchen knives are meant for slicing, dicing, chopping veggies and cutting meat, not batoning wood or building shelter. Overall the construction is very nice.

Sharpness: Out of the box it was ok. It was not sharp by my standards, so I touched it up on my Spyderco Sharpmaker. It sharpened very easily and has held its edge well. I'm not sure what the steel is but it takes a good edge and holds it well. This is a very thin blade so it's not going to hold its sharpness as long as a thicker blade with a more obtuse bevel. Thin blades slice better than thick blades so it's a tradeoff. The blade looks to be hollow ground, which is a nice grind for slicing. The blade maintains the same thickness from the spine until the grind begins. The actual grind begins about 3/5'' from the edge. If you don't know how to sharpen your own knives get a Spyderco Sharpmaker. I put a razor sharp edge on this knife in about 2 minutes and I only touch it up for about 2 minutes every few weeks. This is a good quality grapefruit knife that is well sharp & well made. Does a nice job on cutting the different sections apart. One side has a curved shape blade to cut around the fruit. The double blade is used to cut out the triangle sections. However, you will see when you go to wash & clean this knife, the 2 blades together are hard to clean between them. So this is what I did to fix this cleaning issue. I cut one of the 2 blades off with a rotary Dremel tool. Then filed down around the edges to make it smooth. It really made a difference in cleaning this knife so I bought another one & did the same thing. In case you are wondering why I didn't buy another name brand grapefruit knife is this. Almost every one I looked at on-line has this patent 2 blade design. But now my knife cleaning got a lot easier. Highly recommend the knife.
