Victorinox Swiss Classic 3-Piece Paring Set

Victorinox Swiss Classic 3-Piece Paring SetThese knives are great. Nice and sharp, will last a long time. However, the description states that they have Fibrox handles but they actually do not. They have just a basic plastic handle. But this really shouldn't sway you from buying them. You're still getting three knives for the price of two.

These are great knives. They are sharp, they are attractive and seem sturdy. Time will tell, but they do seem to be here for the long haul. Maybe I should write another review in ten years to say if they did hold up. Nah, that would be ridiculous.

Boston Warehouse Turtle Cutting Board and Trivet Combo

Boston Warehouse Turtle Cutting Board and Trivet ComboThis is really cute. It is small and would be good for small veggies and such. Made of strong plastic.

This is way too cute! but besides that is a great little cutting board. perfect for when u just need to cut a fruit or small veggies! I haven't used it as a trivet yet but I'm sure it will look great when I do!

It is cute and functional. I do not think I will use the cutting board side because I have cutting boards but I have used the trivet side and it is highly effective. At first I was afraid the rubber circles would melt some when I put a hot pot on it but it was perfectly fine. I will probably get another one. I am very pleased with this purchase.

Wusthof Classic 4-1/2-Inch Steak Knife

Wusthof Classic 4-1/2-Inch Steak KnifeFirstly, a knife has to cut, or what is it for? These knives take an excellent edge, as is generally true with the forged Wusthof lines. (note, I own about a dozen Wusthof knives, Classic, Gran Prix and Culinar) They easily cut any meat, and as another reviewer noted, they serve well as a utility knife too. It has been my experience that any knife that says "never needs sharpening" is probably a piece of junk. So, yes, once in a while you may need to sharpen your steak knives. Fact is, those cheap serrated knives tear the fibers of the meat, and the moisture quickly runs out, leaving a less succulent steak. It's a trade-off I'm not willing to make.

The handle of this model seems just right to me. It's not slender or delicate, feels sturdy, but it's not clunky or awkward. The blade is sturdy, strong and true, and should last a lifetime. As a nice bonus, they look great, elegant and clean.

I must admit, I've never owned a dishwasher, so I've never been tempted to put fine knives in one. If hand-washing your knives is too time consuming for you, then you may not find these your best choice. On the other hand, if you enjoy working with quality tools, and don't mind the extra care that they require, these knives are a pleasure to use and own.

As a chef, I put my full faith into Wusthof knives and I love the Wusthof Classic. Although I have at least one or more of Global, Shun, Henckels and Mac knives, my wusthof knives get the most use. To each their own with which knife feels the best in their hand when in use, but I'll swear up and down about the Wusthof Classic handles. These steak knives are lightweight enough to use easily, yet have enough weight that you're unlikely to get careless.

Although these steak knives shouldn't replace a paring knife, they double up as one for the larger fruits/veggies and make slicing an ease.

If you're looking for knives at a low end of expense and don't mind buying new ones in a few years, look elsewhere. If you're looking for great steak knives that will last you a lifetime with numerous uses, look no further! They're worth every dime.

We've had these for about 4 or 5 years but still haven't used them! Why 5 stars? We've had them in the open about 3' above the ocean the entire time & there's not a speck of corrosion! Handles feel very comfortable & if our others ever give out we'll gladly use them.

Totally Bamboo Greenlight Paddle, Cutting Board, Large

Totally Bamboo Greenlight Paddle, Cutting Board, LargeI read the reviews and promptly ordered this board. Since I store my cutting boards upright in a slide out drawer the thinness was much appreciated. Very strong and easy to clean. Bamboo really is standing up to the hype. Love the size. Surface large enough to contain loose rolling pieces of veggies as I chop them. A word about what I learned about oiling your cutting boards. This is very important to prevent drying out, warping and splitting of your investment. Oiling helps seal the surface (a good idea to prevent small bamboo splinters from shedding in this case) and makes your board surfaces much easier to clean. But the 'key' is to only use food grade or pharmaceutical grade "mineral" oil that is available at any major drug store. Not baby mineral oil, motor oil or anything else. Ever..... This oil will likely be found in the 'laxative' aisle. Just ask if you have to. This lable will state 'USP' on it somewhere. Never, ever use any vegetable oils. They eventually become rancid and nasty gummy on the wood. Never allow the wood to sit waiting to be cleaned in a damp area or sink. Now I know better after having to sand down the surface and cut the split edge off of an expensive cutting board to order to save it. Scrub your boards clean with dish soap and a small brush. Rinse well and allow to air dry. Pour a small amount of oil in the palm of your hand and slather the board on all surfaces. Even the sides and handle. Prop it up somewhere overnight to let the oil soak in. Wipe off excess oil with a paper towel and store. Re-oil periodically when any surface starts to appear a little dry. Your board will last many years and while you are at it, just get two boards. Mark one for veggies/fruits and one for meats. I like to use a spray bottle of bleach and water on the meat cutting board immediately after its use just before soaping and scrubbing with a small hand scrub brush. Much safer that way.

I bought this when it was 50% off (and the next day it was back to regular price, how lucky was that??). Anyway, I like this board because there's a handle where I can hang it to dry. I was hesitant about the thickness of the board (3/8") since it is thinner than the other bamboo boards I looked at. I've used it for a month and so far, the board has not warped. There are three layers of bamboo stalks pressed together so that each layer runs perpendicularly to its adjacent layers, to prevent warping. It is resistant to knife cutting marks compared to my previous wood board (which warped and became pretty cut up very fast). Overall, it's a good quality board that's beautifully made. I wouldn't hesitate to serve food on this as well.

Oh yeah, it comes with instructions saying that you should oil the board every once in awhile with their special bamboo oil. I've just been using my regular cooking oil and it's fine so far. Maybe I'll update this post in a year with the results.

When this board arrived it was way better than I thought. It's a great size for chopping multiple items (no crowding) and it cleans off easily. Also bamboo is the best you can get for your good knives. I couldn't believe it said dishwasher safe. For me it was a sign from the company that they stand behind the product. I don't see a reason to toss the board in the dishwasher because it is so easy to clean. I recently soaked it with a good food grade mineral oil and it looks great. I hang it on my cabinet near the sink for easy access. I get lots of comments from folks who see it or watch me use it. Great product, great price.

Chicago Cutlery Forum 7-Inch Santoku Knife, Sheath Packaging

Chicago Cutlery Forum 7-Inch Santoku Knife, Sheath PackagingThe knife is a good size and very sharp, while being a nice light weight. Be careful while cutting smaller vegetables!

I own this exact knife as well as an entire set of Chicago Cutlery knives (with a different style handle) and this one is my hands-down favorite. It is the most versatile blade design for all-around use in the kitchen, and looks great too.

Every Chicago Cutlery knife I have ever owned has come razor sharp from the factory, holds an edge well, and is easily resharpened.

If I could only use one knife in my kitchen, this would be it! Don't let the cheap price fool you, this knife will keep up with knives that cost 3-5 times as much!

Buy Chicago Cutlery Forum 7-Inch Santoku Knife, Sheath Packaging Now

I have owned this knife for about 5 years and have to say the solid metal Chicago Cutlery knives are outstanding for the price. The first thing I love is the fact that they are one single piece of metal as opposed to a handle of a different material that has been bolted on. This is important to me because I had a handle from a Faberware knife break in my hand while in use. I did not get hurt, but the possibility was still there. Second, the price. You can't beat the price of these knives for the quality product you get. One thing, they do not hold an edge for more than about 5 vigorous uses and its ready to be sharpened again. Buy this knife, you won't be disappointed.

Chef Craft 20494 Roller Style Knife Sharpener

Chef Craft 20494 Roller Style Knife SharpenerI've had one of these for about 20 or 30 years and finally decided it was time to replace it. After searching online this appeared to be the same BUT the quality is definitely not the same quality as the old model. The little rubber wheel covers come right off when trying to sharpen a knife. It seems to sharpen OK but having to re-seat the wheel covers is a nuisance.

The second time we used it the wheel fell off and broke. We had one for years and misplaced it I a move I got this one thinking it was the same but it is made a lot cheaper.

My dad used this style sharpener when I was growing up, and I remembered it working so well. When I went to buy one of my own 15 years later, I was surprised to only find new sharpener designs in the local stores -huge clunky, tabletop sharpeners that didn't seem to work. After trying several of these with no success, I ran a search on Amazon and was happy to find that this "wheel" design still exists! By far, the easiest to use (just go slowly to be safe) and the most practical.

Knork Duo Knorks, Set of 4

Knork Duo Knorks, Set of 4A couple of years ago, my husband and I were watching a show that featured hopeful inventors. The Knork was one of the featured products, and we both gasped 'ingenious' when we saw it.

I can't say enough about the Knork. It is a beautiful piece of cutlery (important to a woman of vanity like myself), it works very, very well. I do not try to cut steak with it, and do believe my children should learn to use all utensils politely and correctly.

BUT, with that said. I have seven kids living at home. Since we got the Knorks, I can set the table with one utensil, I rarely have to cut food for anyone anymore, and the dishes have decreased dramatically! HOORAY.

I am looking forward to trying out the rest of Knork cutlery line. I have Pfalzgraff now, but can see my self switching over to this beautiful, nicely weighted cutlery.

Great invention!

I was actually searching for buffet forks or runcible spoons (spoons with three short fork tines) when I came upon Knorks in my Amazon search. While the name "Duo" was confusing, it was a couple of dollars less for a set of four, so I ordered them. The "Duo," I discovered. refers to the combo of the finish on the Knork (matte and polished). They have a nice heft to them and really are a pleasure to use. The edges, although not sharp to the touch or feel, cut right through sausages, eggplant, etc. I am pleased with the appearance and quality of these Knorks (fork with the ability to cut through food, thus eliminating the necessity of also using a knife).

Buy Knork Duo Knorks, Set of 4 Now

I acquired the Knork flatwear four or five years ago. This item being a combination of a knife/fork is ideal for eating pizza, cutting cooked vegetables and ground meats. It is easy to clean, keeps its shine very durable and attractive at the table.

Read Best Reviews of Knork Duo Knorks, Set of 4 Here

The "knork" is one of those "Why didn't I think of that?" products. The concept is simple. If you are right-handed the lower tine comes to an edge sharper (but NOT sharp)than a standard fork. Other reviewers have said how nice it is for cutting pastry and other "softer" foods without "smooshing" them. It does that well. It also does softer meats like corned-beef. The weight is good. It has a very luxurious feel (if you can say that about silverware) and balance. It's basically what it claims to be. I didn't give it "5" stars because of the price. For those who are picky about their table settings, having an odd fork in your setting may distress you (it certainly doesn't me) so you may wish to buy the available complete service for four. I bought 8 knorks to avoid rinsing/washing them between my dishwasher cycles. Plus, if conversation lags at the typical boring dinner party, the "knork" is a "conversation piece." Again, the product is Five star (I use mine all the time), the price makes it a Four star.

I have owned a full set of knork cutlery for the past 6 years and absolutely love them! We use them to cut EASILY throught steaks, pork, chicken and fish. We rarely have to pull out the steak knives for dinner.

Global GF-32 - 6 1/4 inch, 16cm Heavyweight Chef's Knife

Global GF-32 - 6 1/4 inch, 16cm Heavyweight Chef's KnifeA great utility knife. Heavier at handle end than it looks. Thin blade can be easily damage if not use correctly. But still great knife with excellent finished.

I purchased this knife on 7/27 and contacted Global on 9/10 regarding a chip in the blade. I used it as a lite duty knife I can take to different restaurants and use on a salad line for chopping vegetables on the fly. I used it very seldom only on softer vegetables for one month and noticed a chip in the blade. It was out of the return period for Amazon which was fine because I really only wanted the blade fixed by Global (not an unreasonable request). I was told by Global that this wasn't under warranty and had nothing to do with the metal. Really the blade has nothing to do with the quality of the metal?

I have been a long time customer of Global. I have never had any problems with my other knifes from them 10" chef, 10" serrated, Veg, etc. for ten years. The fact that a company can't guarantee it's product for 45 days is absurd, I wasn't asking for a refund or something better, just fix the product. If you are going to invest $135 on one knife, I suggest you buy from a company that will at least fix a chip out of the blade and realize the value of a long time customer.

Update: So after talking with some chef friends. I have been told that shun is the way to go. One guy left his knife at his restaurant, line cook dropped it, breaking off tip, went to shun said hey is it fixable, they offered new knife at no cost!!! So I'm switching to SHUN!

OXO Good Grips Mango Splitter

OXO Good Grips Mango SplitterAlways avoided buying Mangos because of the hassle cutting them. Noticed this tool on Amazon and decided to give it a try (although I did not expect it to work). The design is quite ingenious. The cutting blade is flexible enough to "hug" the pit and cut the fruit away. I would highly recommend.

I agree with the earlier poster that this device allows you to make mango salsa much faster. Yes there is still a little cutting to get meat off the seed, but most of the work is done instantly and painlessly.

Pros:

Makes seeding a mango almost instant

Cons:

I don't know what I'll do when this device eventually dulls (sharpening it will be difficult)

It doesn't handle the largest sizes of mangoes

Buy OXO Good Grips Mango Splitter Now

This little invention I just bought cuts out a lot of mango and a lot of BS. I pay about $1.50 per mango, so losing flesh in cutting the things up is like a punch in the throat. Mangoes are well connected to their skin and seed, making it hard not to waste or at least end up with a million little hacked off pieces and cut up hands.

I didn't give it 5 stars simply because there is still a small bit of waste, but given the stubborn nature of the mango, that's inevitable. Someday someone will breed a mango that just pops away from the seed like a peach.

There's a slight learning curve on the tool, but I got it on my first try. I doesn't look like it should work but it does. Amazing and rewarding the first time you use it and have two robust shoulders taken off the seed.

Read Best Reviews of OXO Good Grips Mango Splitter Here

The problem with mangos is that the pit is well-secured inside the fruit by a pit with long, tough fibers attached. The pit is an inconvenient flat oblong, slippery under the knife. However, if you admire the "peach soaked in turpentine" exotic taste (and I certainly do) you might wonder if there isn't some way to cut out the flesh of the mango without a long, hard struggle.

This device is positioned over the mango like an apple corer, allowing you to cut the fibers around the pit and release it from (most) of the meat. While there is still some waste, and while mangos and their pits vary in size, this is pretty good.

It certainly beats my current method of mango preparation, which is to slice along side of the pit, making two shallow halves. I dice the fruit inside the hull and slice it off that tough skin with a knife positioned flat along the skin. I get cubes of mango, and then I either try to trim the pit or I nibble it as a cook's tidbit.

This cutter is faster by far than my old method and a lot neater. Big thumbs up to OXO for figuring this out.

Want OXO Good Grips Mango Splitter Discount?

I was so excited after the first time I used this tool. I was amazed at how easily I was able to split my way through a mango. With moderate pressure, this tool whizzed right through the mango without a problem and I ended up with two perfectly sliced halves. As I am a mango fanatic, it was love at first sight with this tool.

The honeymoon was short-lived, however. After a handful of uses, I noticed I was having problems with my mango splitter. What once sailed through the mango was now giving me problems right from the get go. Just piercing through the top of the mango was work enough, and with the added pressure now required, my mangoes were quickly becoming mangled, mutilated messes, and my cutting board and counter tops would be drenched in mango juice. What's worse I could only get the implement about half way through the mango, but no more, and then I had a bear of a time retrieving the splitter from the fruit at all. At first I thought maybe I was using it on too ripe mangoes, and because I didn't want to give up on my beloved mango splitter, I gave it several more tries with mangoes of varying ripeness. Unfortunately, I killed at least a half a dozen mangoes in the process.

Bottom line...this implement works wonderfully from the start, but the blades quickly dull leaving you with a useless apparatus. I have 2 other friends that have had the exact same experience as me with the Oxo Mango Splitter, so I highly doubt it was only mine that had this problem. I have since returned to using my chef's nice to get at my mangoes. It's a bit of a pain, but at least no mangoes have to be killed in the process. Sorry, OXO, but you need to go back to the drawing board with this one.

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin Collection Hard Cheese Knife with Bamboo Cutting Board

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin Collection Hard Cheese Knife with Bamboo Cutting BoardThis is a nice, plain and simple cheese board. The only thing keeping me from giving it the last star is the lack of a keeper on the knife so it stays with the board in the cabinet.

I bought this set without checking the size. I had expected a larger board, which can also be used for vegi and meat. Although it's now sitting at the bottom of my gargets drawer, it's still in very good quality. The knife and the board are made in solid form. Would recommend it to anyone who do want to use it for cheese or small pieces of food only.

Chicago Cutlery Forum 7-1/2-Inch Bread Knife, Sheath PackagingI bought Chicago cutlery steak knives first. The knive is just as good. I woul recommend to anyone. It's also not expensive.

I love the Chicago Cutlery knife set with one exception. The bread knife serrated teeth are MUCH too agressive for bread. It makes so many crumbs when used. It is so bad that we rescued the old knife from our previous set to use instead. The rest of the knife set is so well balanced and very nice. It's hard to believe that such an oversite was made. Chef's Choice Edgecraft 2-by-6-Inch Diamond Sharpening Stone

Chef's Choice Edgecraft 2-by-6-Inch Diamond Sharpening StoneThis is a single stone (rather than a complicated series of stones) that gets the job done better than a much more costly electric sharpener. If you wish your knives were sharper, but don't want to become a professional knife maintenance technician, it's a nice choice. I like mine.

Bear in mind that with a sharpening stone, YOU are responsible for holding the knife at the correct angle; there are no safety features; and you'll still want to use a honing steel (that long metal rod with a handle) after sharpening.

While I am still a neophyte when it comes to sharpening, I rate this stone as good overall and my skills limit the possible outcome. There are tradeoffs with a one-in-all approach, so using a strop or steel after sharpening is recommended.

What this does well is remove metal fairly quickly if you need to reprofile, repair edges, or bring an abused/dull knife back. This has worked well with both pocket knives, kitchen cutlery, and general fixed blade knives of various metals (carbons and stainless). It works better, or perhaps my technique (lack of) produces better results with softer steels. I've been less successful with D2 or higher vanadium steels such as that in Global knives.

Per comments above, it will not bring back the best polished edge, so this is not the best option for an only one.

Good base/box with small rubber feet that grip a counter/table well when sharpening.

Not the optimal size for larger cutlery, but this seems to work well for a variety of blade types sizes, etc.

Good overall option for free hand sharpening with a reasonable price for a dry stone. Those with a high degree of skill may be better served by other options.

I purchased this item because of a good experience with other company products and a family reommendation for this particular item. The diamond stone has not been fixed exactly parallel to the sides of the wooden base casing and so the lid cover does not sit squarely on the base. It is not worth sending back from Australia but if the manufacturer wishes to distribute internationally they need to do more than just have US address and telephone in the internet age.

Have had a small cleaver that I like to use for general purpose chopping and cutting, but was never able to keep it very sharp, despite trying to use a sharpening rod kit. The missing piece was not using a stone, you can use either a traditional wet stone, or a hard surface (diamond) one. Since I didn't want the hassle of a wet stone, I opted for this one, and found it to be easy to use. The instructions tell you to try and maintain a 22.5 degree angle while sharpening, which they recommend you do by folding over a piece of paper twice, once to get a 45 deg angle and then once more, and using this from time to time to check your angle. Other than that, it's very straightforward and you end up with a very sharp knife.

Easy and fun to use on the first three or so knives, but if you're like me and waited until all your knives were dull before buying a sharpener then either stagger your sharpening or be prepared with some icy hot for your dominant hand lol! It sharpens quickly, and the two pack was awesome to get because I have a habit of not being able to find something when I need it, so a spare is always great! It's pretty small so it doesn't take up much room, and I'm happy I didn't go with an electric sharpener even after I overworked my hand sharpening every knife in the house, plug space is a much needed commodity in my kitchen!
