Being permanently disabled with arthritis & fibromyalgia, and having been displeased as a very avid home chef, with about two dozen various brands & makes of flatware at all prices over the years, I decided I would look high and low for the best flatware set made today at any cost. I did not look online, by pictures, or by catalogs to compare, but rather I spent a lot of hands on time searching for just the right set over the course of several years in person through many, many hundred of designs from dozens of stores and brands. Having searched quite vigorously and purposely, I have found what I believe to be the BEST SET OF FLATWARE MADE PERIOD.

While at first glance the design seems simple and undecorated, but I feel this set is the best from a practical and useful standpoint, and even more so from a quality standpoint. Generally there are three issues that I have had with flatware. The first is the long time issue of the neck of the utensil, where you will find lesser grade flatware having been made of either a separate handle & action portion (eg. the actual blade, bowl or fork tines), and then fitted together but eventually loosening over time and use. Or, being made of one piece of metal, but almost always a stamped out piece of thin sheet metal and easily bendable in the neck portion like you see in all the poor grade flatware you find in restaurants today. Anything having such a design was immediately rejected.

Second is the problem of overall design. I honestly and openly admit that plain patterns are just that, plain! I really do! But I also feel that some patterns of silverware can clash with the plates, settings, and even the décor of the dining environment. I myself would much rather prefer to host a party with a set of plain pattern flatware and elegant dinnerware, food, embroidered napkins, flowers, etc., versus clashing patterns any day as with this set I don't have to buy several silverware patterns or risk having a set of silverware clashing with the food and other dinnerware. For example, a set of Victorian era styled silverware does not in anyway, no matter what Martha Stewart and others may say, go with a contemporary plate setting with modern/new age/fusion style food, no matter what anyone says! It's always good to have one set of silverware, or your one and only set, that can go with anything, especially if you don't want, don't have space for, or can't afford to have multiple sets of flatware.

Third and last is the quality, reputation and pattern longevity, and all are intermingled. Some brands and styles come and go, and usually for the better, but others have been here longer than most people would guess. The Lenox brand, while not the most nor the least expensive, is a great brand and the pattern of these flatware are timeless. Something to consider if you plan on adding to your set down the road. And no, like all my reviews, I'm not affiliated with or compensated in any way by the company or seller of any product I do a review on I'm just well pleased with my purchase.

IN SHORT:

The handle size and ergonomics are outstanding, and the flatware are very tough and well made. These are solid, not hollow, not stamped, but forged high grade 18/10 high carbon stainless steel, just like the cladding layers of the renowned All-Clad cookware of great fame and esteem. This is a set that will last for many generations, if not forever, and it's quality can never be shown to it's fullest without actually seeing it in person. While not a glamorous design some would say, philosophers would agree with me in that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and the simplicity, quality and function of these flatware are second to none. I guarantee that you will be pleased once you try them and your guests will comment highly about them. They have grace, quality and value. Three things that are getting to be almost impossible to find now-days.

I have tired spoons that break at the neck and bent flatware. After looking for something that was affordable, with simple classic lines, I decided on this patttern. I love love love this flatware. The design is clean, simple, and dresses up or down. The weight of this set is substantial. The length each piece is a little longer, thus the "Continental" designation. The pieces feel good in the hand, and seem to make eating food a more intentional activity. No troubles in the dishwasher either. They come out fine, with the occasional water spot for which I do not blame the flatware. I love the way they look on the table.

I would highly recommend this particular dining set.

We registered for these for our wedding. I saw them at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. I have this thing about making sure the forks are really pointy. These really were. The ones we got are too! I love this abut them. They are really pretty out of the box and have a very simple style. When opening them I noticed that they were made in Vietnam (in case this is an issue for anyone). It has been about two months since we started using these. The one thing I don't like is that the knives are starting to loose their finish. I was expecting better quality given how much these cost. However that was not meant to be I guess. The rest of the silverware is doing just fine, but I don't know why the knives are this way. Hope this helps!

Le Creuset Stoneware 9 3/4' Pasta Bowl, WhiteI really like these pasta bowls. They are heavy weight and I use them for everything, including pasta. I would have rated them with five stars but they chip rather easily and I'm going to have to replace two of them shortly. I still recommend them, but handle with care.

These versatile items gets used over and over at my house. We eat a lot of one dish pastas or salads, and these look great on a set table or work simply on one's lap while sofa dining in front of the TV. It seems we've gone through a lot of pasta bowls over the years, but these tough workhorses are built to last, and judging from the way they're holding up under a lot of use, I do believe they'll be the last I'll need to purchase. Well worth the extra cost.

Kiwi Pro Slice PeelerI have had one for a few years now and I use it for all sorts of things: shredding carrots and cucumbers for sushi rolls or spring rolls; shredding veggies for garnishes or to add to salads; and shredding summer squashes to use as vegetable "noodles in soups or to top with sauces. i have even used it to make shoestring potatoes to fry into potato "nests". Easy to use, easy to clean, the handle may be plastic but it is a very sturdy plastic and handles the dishwasher just fine. Just added this to my wish list since one of the kids has misplaced mine and I am feeling the loss almost daily in my kitchen!

Top Chef by Master Cutlery 5-Piece Chef Basic Knife Set with Nylon Carrying CaseReceived these for a Christmas gift. I use Henckel Profi S at home, and was looking for a cheaper set to stash in my locker at the fire station. Using German Henckels, my standards are pretty high, and I have to say that these inexpensive knives were a pleasant surprise! They have good balance, and are most definitely ice-hardened stainless, same process as Henckels uses. Tradeoff with stainless is that you can't get quite as sharp of an edge, i.e. you probably couldn't shave with them, but they are well beyond adequate for most kitchen tasks. If you need razor sharp (sushi, filet knife, etc.), you will probably want something other than these for a couple of reasons. They come with a great edge right out of the box, but this stainless doesn't hold up quite as well as other stainless knives I've used. I have been surprised to see that the faces of the blades have scratched all over from handwashing with a green scrubby on one side of a sponge--I would never expect hard stainless to do that. I don't care about that cosmetically, but that just tells me that the steel is a bit softer, and I definitely have to hone and/or sharpen before preparation of each meal. I have definitely been spoiled by the abuse that Henckels will take before needing honing!

The downside in my opinion is the case. The knife pockets are created by sewing a piece of flat nylon stock to a flat backing, which leaves the threads fully exposed to the edges of the knives (there is no permanent insert in the sleeves). The knives come in thin plastic sleeves, and with a plastic cover on the tips, but these will probably be quickly lost or cut through. Replacing the plastic covers on the tips is not a good idea anyway, much like re-capping a needle. In any case, I have used the plastic sleeves every time, yet the stitching has come out of the case to the point where it no longer holds the knives (after two weeks' use). The knives also have a velcro tab around the handle, which I find to be a hassle--a well-designed case won't need this and it's one more thing to mess with when your hands are covered in food. If you use this case, I'd suggest getting some edge covers that are more substantial and designed to last.

I am returning my defective set, but will likely order another of this product in hopes the case defect on my case was an isolated incident. The quality of the knives is worth the hassles of the case. Alternately, I may buy a better case and keep just the knives--at $48, the knives are a steal even without the case!

For another excellent budget knife brand, look at Forstner by Victorinox. They are a stamped blade (not forged), but their 9-inch filet and 14-inch slicer (with granton edge) are the finest function I've used at any price.

These knives are X30Cr13 stainless steel, the same steel used in many high-quality chef knives, and it is decidedly NOT carbon steel.

If you honestly believe that stainless steel means it will never stain, you should likely drop out of culinary school and choose a vocation where you won't be exposed to such illogical concepts.

Stainless steel doesn't develop the patina that carbon steel does, and cannot be sharpened to the same razor edge. It stays brighter and is easier to clean, but can definitely stain or discolor with use.

These knives are an excellent bargain I'll be using them as a Christmas gift, myself. I may even get several sets, depending on who needs them. :)

After losing my beloved Shun Kaji knives in a divorce, I had to find a new set of knives for a bargain price more in line with my new budget. Being a Top Chef fan and foodie, I decided to take a chance and get this inexpensive set.

One thing I love about these knives is the nicely round shaped handles which are great for eliminating hand fatigue. I've recently been suffering with severe carpel tunnel and arthritis in my right hand which makes it hard to use most kitchen utensils for an extended amount of time without pain and hand fatigue. These knives I can use for hours without any pain.

These knives are also very sharp. I've cut, chopped, diced and minced carrots, potatoes, cheese, onions, etc., all with no problem. It was very important to me to have a knife that could cut a carrot with ease and these knives fit the bill. If you have any knife skills at all you should have no problem using these knives with ease.

So far, my set hasn't stained or discolored. Though, I always hand wash them with a soft cloth and dry them immediately.

I love the nylon carrying case as well, as it keeps my good knives out of sight from my fiance who used to grab my good knives to use for some outdoor project!

Overall, this is a good basic set at a great bargain price and they should work for any basic kitchen tasks. I love them.

First off I want to throw in here that I went to school for a Culinary Arts degree. In school we practiced knife skills up the wazoo and in order to be successful at amazing knife skills you need knives that are as sharp as a razor. This sharpener is the EXACT ones we used in Culinary school to hone all the blades we wielded in the kitchen. Anyway, I left school and worked as a chef in different kitchens and never came across this type of sharpener again. And I missed it dearly.

Years later I decided to leave the restaurant industry behind and move on to more private chef types of jobs. And it was then that I wanted, no, needed to find this sharpener again. And here it was all along. The step-by-step sharpening option is excellent for bringing old knives back from the dead. But if you stay on top of your sharpening as I do, you will really only need to use the lightest colored ceramic bar to sharpen. That particular bar feels as smooth as ceramic can get. You might wonder, "How is moving my blade across a surface like this sharpening my knife?" Trust me, its honing an edge on your blade like no other I have found. I use Shun knives and this is the only sharpener I will use on them.

So one caveat for you. This is a larger, sturdier and heavier sharpener than you may be used to. It feels like a tank. This does not mean you can treat it like its a tank. These are ceramic bars and if you are not careful, and you drop this thing wrong the bars will break. It happened to me once. What did I do? I bought another one because my knives can't live without it. You don't have to handle it like a petri dish infected with an ebola strain, but just be careful with it as it is pricier than most sharpeners, but well worth the money. Great for quick touch-ups and reestablishing an edge. I just wish the two heavier grits weren't quite so coarse. Even the change in grit from medium to fine is a little too steep, making a little too much work on the fine stone after establishing a brand new edge on really dull blades. That said, the fine stone works really well on slightly worn blades. Very happy with this.

For years, I've been successfully sharpening my knives with a two-stage Crock Stick; the rod angles are set in the holder, all one needs to do is draw the knife down the rods, keeping the blade fairly perpendicular to the holder. With the Crock Stick rods wearing down, I thought I'd try this sharpener as a replacement after reading the user ratings. Alas, it doesn't work well for me; constantly holding the knife blade at the proper angle to these rods seems all but impossible for me. I was able to use the course, blue stone to bring back a costly but really abused paring knife blade, but I could only sharpen it to "perfection" by finishing with the Crock Stick; thus, I will look for new rods for the Crock, now.

This is the best sharpener I have ever used. I've tried stones, diamond sharpeners, ceramic sticks, and, while all work, this one works the best and is the simplest to use, either in the horizontal or vertical orientations. Once a knife is prepared using the coarser rods, if necessary, all that's left is a very few light, very light, strokes along the finest rod to bring the blade to razor sharpness. You can feel the blade getting sharp, as the resistance to stroking decreases, once you get used to using this sharpener It cleans up easily and takes up little cupboard space for storage. KitchenAid 3.5-Cup Food Chopper

KitchenAid KFC3100OB Chef Series 3- Cup Food Chopper, Onyx BlackI have had a few full-size food processors in the past -both expensive and cheap models -and the main complaints I had with them were: bulkiness, noise, and cleanup time. Over time, I realized that I was doing fewer and fewer things with the processor, and then finally, it got put away for good.

But lately, I found that I was chopping the same ingredients, in almost the same amounts, again and again.

So, on a whim, really, I decided to give the Kitchenaid 3-cup chopper a try. I own a number of Kitchenaid large appliances, and have always been satisfied. This food chopper is no exception, as it exceeds my expectations for handling my chopping drudgery. Be it onions, garlic, emulsifying dressing, making bread crumbs, chopping nuts, whatever.

This unit takes a very small amount of counter space, has a great look, stores its cord in the base, and its bowl and cover are dishwasher-safe.

This appliance is a nice time-saver, and that, in my opinion, makes it a great item.

When I starting searching for a mini-chopper I was surprised by the huge rating difference between the Cuisinart DLC2 and the KitchenAid KFC3100, so I bought both and did a side-by-side comparison. The only explanation I can give for the ratings difference is that Cuisinart buyers must have higher expectations. For most operations they have nearly identical performance and for some operations the Cuisinart is the clear winner.

Onions: Many Cuisinart reviewers panned its performance here, claiming it made onion purée, but most KitchenAid reviewers praised its onion chopping ability. I found almost no difference between the two. Maybe its an issue with the instructions for chopped onions you must use a few short pulses. A few more pulses and you get minced onion more than this and both give you onion puree. I wouldn't say either is great at chopping onions, but both are equally mediocre.

I also tested chopping nuts, and making breadcrumbs with similar results. Both performed about the same for a course chop, although the Cuisinart produced a more even chop on the nuts, but its when you want a really fine chop that the Cuisinart starts to shine. The first reason for this is the grind feature found only on the Cuisinart. This spins the blade in the opposite direction which allows the flat, back-side of the blade to impact the food. More importantly, it redistributes the food, so if you've got a couple of chunks that refuse to be chopped, a short pulse in the opposite direction helps it drop into the blade. For perfect, fine breadcrumbs I alternate between the normal chop mode for a few seconds, and grind for one second.

The other reason the Cuisinart gives a better fine chop is that it does a much better job of cycling the food through the blade. This is a real key when you're working with softer foods like spreads, pâtés or purees. When I made a cream cheese spread in both choppers the Cuisinart did a far quicker and better job of pulling the ingredients down the center and into the blade. The KitchenAid kept larger chunks bobbing on top. If you're making dips, spreads or baby food, the Cuisinart is the hands-down winner.

On the practical side, both choppers were equally easy to clean. Both have small holes in the lid for pouring in liquids on the fly, but only The KitchenAid has a slot for dry or thick ingredients if that's important to you. Overall, I found the Cuisinart easier to use for several reasons. First, the Cuisinart blade drops on easily, while the KitchenAid blade is keyed and I found myself turning it several times before it dropped in. Second, the KitchenAid lid must be removed first before you can lift off the bowl, but on the Cuisinart, the bowl and lid can be detached as an assembly. Finally, the Cuisinart blade has a "handle" that extends to the top of the bowl like a popsicle stick allowing you to remove the blade without getting your fingers in the food.

After all my testing, I really can't understand the large ratings difference between these two. Neither is perfect you'll never get a perfect, even, course chop with things like onions or chocolate, but they do come in handy. For many uses either one will give you pretty much the same results. Because of its advantage with softer foods and its ease of use, I recommend the Cuisinart.

I love almost everything about this chopper. It's reasonably priced, a nice size, and it does a good job with the chopping (my first experiment, chicken salad, was a success). It's easy to clean, the cord stores in the base, there's a slot in the top to add ingredients while mixing, and the little paddle is handy for scraping out the food from the bowl (it's a tight fit for one of those regular size rubber kitchen paddles). Another good feature: the chop button won't function unless the lid is locked in place.

The one thing I don't love: the noise. I expected some noise with a chopper, of course, but this thing is so loud and *shrill* that it's almost embarrassing to use. It sounds sort of like a dentist's drill, times ten.

So, we have four stars for this product. It does its job, it just makes a lot of noise doing so.

I've never really liked food processors. They are bulky, confusing to assemble, and a pain to clean. I also enjoy the feeling of cutting up my own vegetables the old fashioned way with a knife and board. But after throwing a dinner party where I spent HOURS chopping vegetables, I decided enough is enough and picked up this little buddy.

It works best as a chopper for things like onions, shallots, garlic, or nuts. I've also used it to make fine ground bread crumbs that would have taken forever using a mortar and pestle. Given how small it is, I always leave it on the counter so I can use it whenever I want. The best thing is that clean up has never been a problem. No scrubbing, picking food out of a funky blade, or any other real chores. The blades are as sharp as knife though, so treat that with caution in the sink.

My only real complaint with this chopper is that it is slightly awkard to put together. I always want to take the container, put the blade in, put the food in, put the top on, and put that on the chopper base. Doesn't work that way (but then no chopper or food processor probably does), though I wish it did. Instead, the container goes on the base, then the blade goes in, then the food, and finally the top.

The only other caveat is that you need to quarter or roughly cube your food to be processed. If you don't, then it can often end up stuck above the blade. This limitation is not particular to Kitchenaid's product but choppers in general. The small basin doesn't allow you to drop in big food items like a food processor can handle. Still, it saves you plenty of time.

I had the Cuisinart DLC Miniprep first, and was not happy with it. I wanted a small food processor primarily to chop up an onion and some garlic cloves, and with the Cuisinart, I pretty much ended up doing almost all of the chopping before I put the food in the processor, otherwise large sections wouldn't get cut.

After reading the reviews here about how the Kitchenaid has the reverse sprial action which pulls down the food, I thought I'd try that one, and it's true!! The Kitchenaid KFC3100 is a superior product! Now I can just cut the onion into quarters and throw in whole garlic cloves and it cuts them all up perfectly. If your not sure which of the two products to buy, get the Kitchenaid KFC3100!

Pure Komachi 2 Series  Paring KnifeThis is a great little knife with a major identity crisis. Someone else said it works well as a small chef's knife and I agree. It's a great little utility knife. However, it absolutely stinks as a paring knife. I was using it for the first time yesterday to hull and chop strawberries for jam and it is downright dangerous as a paring knife. When your hand and thumb are placed where you need them for paring and cutting, the heel (which you can see in the picture protrudes quite far and angles out) is perfectly positioned for cutting you in the tender area between your thumb and index finger. It happened to me three times before I just gave up and grabbed my Henckels instead.

If you're looking for a great little knife on the cheap, pick this one up. If you're looking for a true paring knife, keep searching. I would highly recommend something with a shorter heel. I'm sure someone out there will think I'm just a dope who just doesn't know how to use a knife properly, but I assure you, I'm no spring chicken. I've been at this cooking thing for a while.

This knife is brought to us by KAI, the company responsible for Shun kitchen knives and Kershaw and Zero Tolerance sporting knives. Of course, this knife represents the opposite end of the price-quality spectrum from Shun.

The Pure Komachi line is very comparable to Kuhn-Rikon's Colori line. I prefer the Pure Komachi knives, as they are flat-ground instead of hollow. That's just my preference.

The "nonstick" coating is really there to cut manufacturing costs and keep the knife cheap. It is cheaper to coat a big run of these knives than it is to polish the bare metal. I'd rather have a plain steel finish, but at these prices, it's hard to complain.

This little parer is an excellent pattern, much more like a miniature chef's knife than most paring knives. It has that sort of raised-handle format where your fingers slot in behind the blade, and you can get the whole edge down on a cutting board and make "rocking" cuts. And it cuts like crazy because the blade is quite thin.

It comes with a plastic blade cover so that you can toss it in a drawer and not worry about dinging the edge. I wish that all knives did.

The steel is 420J2 stainless, the lowest-carbon cutlery-grade steel there is. Compared to other cutlery steels, it will not hold an edge very long, but to be honest, it's hard for the average person to tell any difference in edge-holding between this knife and a more expensive one made of "better" steel. Most kitchen knives are run pretty soft so that they dent or roll instead of chipping or breaking on impact, and so that they'll be easy to sharpen.

You can easily get a scary edge on 420J2, and it is very corrosion-resistant. It also keeps the price of the knife down.

So yes, this knife is CHEAP. But it cuts and handles great.

This knife has virtually replaced the paring knives in my knife block. I'm not sure what made me get it (I purchased it cheaply at Target), but I'm glad I did. I use it for cutting small vegetables, trimming steaks, and almost any other kitchen task. I even use it as a steak knife sometimes. It's easy to clean, and has held a superb edge. I consequently went out and purchased the sandwich knife, a santoku knife, and the utility knife (all of which have done well). My only complaint is that they're so brightly (and somewhat effeminately) colored; this may sound trivial, but imagine cooking for a date using a pink chef's knife. I consequently bought a similar-styled chef's knife from another brand, but it was not nearly as good (I had some trouble cutting a sweet potato, although my henkel's knife did it with ease). As a paring knife, this beats my Henkels and Oxo knives HANDS-DOWN. I'm not as sure when it comes to larger stuff, but if you're getting a resin-coated knife, stick to the Komachi brand.

King Combination Mini Knife Whetstone #K40This stone is one of the handiest stones I have owned as it has two different sides at two different grit grades. I love the lanyard because it lets me hang my stone instead of taking up precious drawer space. Also doesn't get lost like other stones do. Great stone for the price, very affordable.

I am use to the old American Arkansas hard rock to sharpen. Never have I used a "mud" whetstone. None the less, this stone puts a very nice sharp matte edge on any blade using the right angle and stroke weight. It is of high quality, no pits or scratches. A few tiny chips on the edges in unusable area so nothing to worry about. This will not give you a polished finish, the 6000 range is for that, or acquire a honing compound that is suitable for this style of stone and go to town.

The length is a little short and can feel too small but if you angle the blade more towards a 45° angle and maintain a 50-50 draw and cut technique you will have enough room for any knife.

So far, I am very happy with the out of box sharpness, balance, and overall look of the knife. you can cut tomatoes (for example) just by placing the blade over the fruit and gently gliding across the surface. big test will be 4-6 mths down the line and after honing. IN the meantime, the only criticism is the granton edge. this is the first knife i used with this kind of edge, and frankly, mostly everything still sticks: onion, tomato, tofu...

not a big deal, but not a great feature either ...

that said, I think the price is great (about 4 0 bux for the 3pc.), especially on the elegance line (which amazon for some reason doesn't carry yet)

Lenox Sculpt 65-Piece 18/10 Stainless Flatware SetThis does not feel like 18/10 flatware, but of a lesser grade. Insubstantial. Also, look closely at the photo or you'll be deceived as I was that they are rounded, solid looking handles. They're just curved and in the picture, give the appearance of something much more substantial. I was so disappointed when I got these really picnic grade. For the price, not worth it I've seen the equal in the Stop and Shop grocery story aisles for less moeny.

I liked the simplicity of the style and thought I would have a better outcome with this set being 18/10 as far a non-rusting in the dishwaher. Not so unfotunatuly. After approx. 2-3 weeks I have already had at least 4-5 pieces get a rusty spot or two on them upon

removing from the dishwasher. Maybe it is our water hardness level but we are on city water so it should be good. Anyways, I'm not sute that I would buy this again.
