I usually have to wet and wipe down the blade a number of times when cutting the dough. Love the knife. Keeps its edge, easy to sharpen. Plastic handle won't chip. We live in one of those areas of the world where crisp crust sourdough bread is sold just about everywhere. It's great, on the first or second day. Sometimes, depending on the weather, the third. But unless you want to tear a piece off the loaf with your teeth it must be cut. And that's mighty difficult even when bought minutes before. The bakeries have slicers, but we don't like them. Too thin, and slicing the whole loaf at once dries it out.So for years we've used what we thought was a good/adequate bread knife. I bought this set to use at our up-coming wedding. And to hopefully, one day, pass it on to one of our children. The set is just okay...not the best quality. My attention was first drawn to the fact that it is displayed in a great looking keepsake box. Freehand sharpening is not easy, but with a little education and some tips from YouTube you can do a great job.This was my first entry into sharpening with water stones, and I decided to get this set after trying to piece together a similar set with individual stones. Not sure why, but the name "Starter Kit" had me concerned because it implied that it was going to be somehow smaller or less capable. Rest assured, the kit is simply their standard stones packaged in a single rather utilitarian box. Each stone is of high quality, and purchasing together this way provided significant savings over buying each piece individually.
Before I talk about the stones themselves, I should add to my comments that, like others, my kit first arrived with two 220/1000 stones and no 4000/8000. This definitely seems to be a genuine quality control issue. However, in typical Amazon fashion I completed a return authorization online and had a new set in two days, and the inconvenience was minimal, but not non-existent.
I was surprised how short the learning curve was with this. I started with a very inexpensive and dull stainless steel Chinese cleaver that I purchased years ago in New York's Chinatown. This thing was really little more than a novelty piece, as I'd never been able to get it more than moderately sharp using our Chef's Choice sharpener. In one attempt the stones had the knife extremely sharp, and in fact I now reach for it for a huge number of chopping tasks that I'd usually tackle with my Henckels chef's knife. Feeling confident, I worked my way through the Henckels set, and each is now shaving sharp as well. From there I proceeded to sharpen a 20-year old, original Japanese-made Kershaw Black Horse folding knife. This was a little more challenging, but after getting better at finding and holding a proper angle the blade was reprofiled and again absolutely razor sharp. Feeling confident, I then tackled the reprofiling of a KA-BAR USMC. This one was much more difficult for me as a novice, but again, after some patient practice, the blade is now a perfect, hair-popping mirror finish.
After literally hours of sharpening, the stones really don't seem to be any worse for the wear, and I suspect I may never actually consume a stone. The Silicon Carbide flattening stone is very useful, and mine was perfectly flat and very quickly and easily restores the stones to a completely flat surface. I did go out and purchase a Nagura stone for the 8000 grit stone, and have found it to be indispensable as well, as the 8K does very quickly accumulate metal, slowing its effectiveness. I've read from many much more experience sharpeners than I that the 8000k stone is really overkill, but I've definitely found that it takes the blades to another level of sharpness in my amateur hands, while bringing out that jewel-like mirror finish. Using the stones becomes a bit addictive, and I actually went ahead and also picked up a strop that I loaded with green .5 micron compound, at it definitely takes the blade to a final level of perfection. The edge on that KA-BAR, for example, is truly scary after adding a stropping step!
All in all, this is more than a "starter kit," it's just a very capable and easy to learn full size set that should last for a very long time, even if not forever for the typical home user.This kit includes everything you need to sharpen your chisels and plane blades. It even has a step by step video of how to use the stones. No stone is left unturned in putting together this set. For those who don't have a steady hand a honing guide is recommended, though by no means necessary.I've been using sandpaper for the last 3 years, I really like the water stones. The only problem I have is that I'm not sure the flattening stone is flat, I can take to a waterstone til its flat then put 2 waterstones together and it appears that it is not flat. So I guess I need to put the flattening stone to sandpaper. It's a good starter set to make sure it works for you, but I can tell that my next purchase will be the full stones, not the combination stones.

I get compliments on this cutting board all the time (of course, I leave it sitting on the island to show it off). What's cool is that I like to tell people about it, because it's sustainable. I'm a bit of a knife junkie as well, and my knives have been a lot happier now than my previous bamboo cutting board.I decided to get this cutting board as it looks so much like the ones used on the Food Network by all of the chefs. Although this one is round and theirs are rectangular, I like the round one better on my counter. The end grain Teak is so cool in it's display of grain and feature. This is a small inexpensive rocker type pizza cutter. It feels very well made in the hand.. not heavy but heavy enough. I use it to slice the thin crust pizzas I make in my brick oven. I rarely make pizza bigger than 11"-12" so this is a perfect compact tool for the pizza drawer. It is not sharp, but you could sharpen it if you wanted to. Love them! These mats are a wonderful addition to my kitchen. I've tried many different kinds of mats but these are far superior to anything I've purchased. I got the 1724 model from ebay and it was used-like new. It's a very good knife. It has the Doudble D serrated edge.I started to get into baking my own bread and just learning new things. I used that slicer on the bread and man did it cut through like butter with no tears just like it says. Also, I saw that it's good for carving thin slices of ham and other meats. I haven't tried that yet, but, will do when I have the chance.
It's very precise and very easy to use. I also read that you could shred cabbage, slice a piece of cake, etc. They also advised not to use small sawing motion so that you could get nice even slices.
I already know the quality of this knife and like all the other knives (though I'm not trying to sell it to anyone) what cutco from the rest is free sharpening (granted that you pay for shipping) but, which company will give you a lifetime guarantee to replace the knife (if you chip the blade or handle) that they'll place it for free (just the shipping fee is all you need to pay) and what's awesome is you could pass this down to your kids, relatives, friends and still have that warranty. It's not just a knife, but, it's all about quality.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Cool, I thought, when I saw this set of Wusthof knives coupled with kitchen shears in what looked to be an attractive storage block.Wusthof makes knives perfect for those of us that consider ourselves to be a little more talented in the kitchen than your average housewife. Their knives are not super high end, but they are certainly a major notch above many other brands at traditionally reasonable prices.
The cost of this set is about equal to that of what you would pay individually for the 6" Cook's Knife and the two different sized paring knives. Buying the set is like getting a bonus gift of shears plus a block into which all four utensils fit. Or so I thought..
My older Wusthof's Cook's Knife is a few years old. Compared to the one in this set, it is heavier and longer by an inch. No big deal there, I'm just contrasting the difference before stating I found the new knife to be of equal quality to my old. My issues are with the paring knives and the wood block.
The block that holds the set is pitted and looks unfinished on the left side. It is as if an entire step in the sanding process was missed. If that was all, I could just turn the set to face that one side to the wall. However, the face of the block is split along the grain with an especially big gap running from the top to the area between the Cook's Knife and the first paring knife.
What looked to be an attractive holder on-line is ugly and cheap looking in person. Even if it had been finished correctly and did not have the split in front, it would still not look worthy of the Wusthof label for no other reason than the mismatched knife holes. They are just big slots that are not specific to knife size leaving the paring knives plenty of room to slide around and lose what edge they have. Very disappointing.
Still, even though the block holder looks junky, the price is a good deal, right? Wrong. The shears are nothing special. If I was buying only shears I could get an equal quality pair for about $10.
Neither of the paring knives that came with the block (3" or the 4.5") match the quality my 3-5 year old Wusthof paring knife. Side by side, the handle of the 3" knife that came with the block looks a little smaller than mine and definitely weighs less.
Instead of this questionable set, I would recommend buying a Wusthof 7" Cook's knife and their 3" Paring Knife that they sell separately. Get a no-name set of shears only if you need really them. The need for shears is minimal; I cannot remember using mine at all in the last year.
What looked at first to be a good deal for a great set of knives in an attractive block turned out to be, in my opinion, a marketing tool to move inexpensive paring knives and shears. We are the kind of people who buy a knife here and there, now and then, and keep it until it doesn't work well any more. The block we received looks just fine. No splits, unfinished sides, or other flaws. It is quite compact, with a small footprint on the counter. The slots in the holder are all uniform sizes, and not fitted to the various knives or shears. I don't know if that will harm the knives in any way. I don't plan to jostle them and would be careful in pulling them out and replacing them in any event.
The largest knife is somewhat on the small side for a chef's knife, with hollowed out grooves on the side. These are supposed to keep food from sticking to the blade, a problem we have had in the past with other knives. I'm not entirely sure the design of this knife completely eliminates the problem, but it does seem to help somewhat.
The utility knife is a nice step up or down from the other two knives. It comes in handy for slicing vegetables.
The paring knife is small and sharp. The shears operate smoothly and come apart for easy cleaning, which is important to me. I have an older pair of similar shears that do not come apart, and keeping them clean is much more work.
The set is light in weight, compared to some of our other, admittedly low end knives. This is not a problem for us. The knives feel balanced and comfortable in my hand. I might add that my husband, who has larger and somewhat arthritic hands, likes all these knives very much.
We cook at home almost every day, although we are by no means gourmet cooks. From what we have read on-line, this kind of knife is easier to maintain and easier to keep sharp than the more expensive, forged lines. That sounds good to us. For our level of skill and interest in cooking, this set is perfect.

There are two versions of the Studio set, of which this, the "Gourmet" set, is the most affordable, and, for most folks, also presents the best value for your dollar. However, if you are very demanding when it comes to knives, you will probably want to pass this one up and buy the Classic set.Wüsthof is a premier cutlery company located in Solingen, Germany, and they make several different lines of knives, all of which are forged, except for those in the "Gourmet" line, which are stamped. It seems a bit counter-intuitive to call the budget products "Gourmet", because if you really are going to do a lot of cooking and want the best quality and longest lasting, you will appreciate or even demand the classic knives. But if they are out of your budget, you can still get some quality German knives with this set. They would be a good introductory set, and probably fine for many people who aren't "Gourmet" chefs, lol. I would guess that they are better than the knives most people have in their kitchen. The technology for making stamped knives has come a long way, and of course, the German Wüsthof company will give you the best that is available within that technology.
Qualities particular to this set, besides the much lower price tag include: they are lighter, they come to a very sharp point, and the blades are extremely sharp. This type of metal is extremely hard. As to the individual knives, the six inch chef's knife has hollow scallops along each side of the blade, which the Classic does not. These are supposed to reduce drag during cutting. The blades seem relatively more flexible. The small paring knife will come in handy for detail work. The middle size knife--a 4 1/2 inch utility knife will be good for cutting sandwiches, slicing and some chopping. The "big" knife--a six inch chef knife will be handy for most jobs, but it really isn't big enough to do all that a chef's knife should do--for instance, it would be difficult to chop up a cabbage head with it. I am used to my 8 inch Wüsthof for such jobs. Some people prefer an even bigger chef's knife, but as an average sized woman, the 8 is big enough for me. The plus side is that this more handy, but you might want to supplement it with a santoku type knife for variety and power. A serrated bread knife would also be useful.
I really like the come-apart scissors. They are the same ones that are in the "Classic" line.
In sum, this "Gourmet Studio Knife Set" fills a niche for people who want a compact set of nicely designed, sharp knives for budget price. I received this set as a Vine reviewer, and I will definitely use them, but I personally greatly prefer the heft and quality of the Wüsthof "Classic" line, and I am willing to spend the extra dollars to have a product that I can enjoy using for my lifetime. It's important to remember, though, that like most manufacturers they make knives at different price points, and that means some compromises in materials and build. To a professional chef, the knives they use are a primary tool relied heavily every day. They must be razor sharp, retain their edge and have a durability to withstand years of use. A home cooking enthusiast looks for the same qualities and takes pride in knowing they have the best tools available. A more casual user, especially one on a tighter budget might be looking for just a good sharp knife.There are two basic methods of manufacturing a knife. Stamped knives are cut from a large sheet of steel whether cut by a laser or punched out with brute force. Obviously this is the quickest method and allows a large cost savings to the manufacturer making the knives less expensive to purchase. The metal is often to some degree thinner and metal softer, meaning a lower carbon content. The metal part of the knife consists of the blade and a tail extension that is embedded or joined to a handle. The advantages of stamped knives are that they are less expensive, they are lighter, and keep a sharp edge but not nearly as long as the knives made by the more laborious and expensive forging process. This is the process used in making this Gourmet line of Wusthof.
Wusthof's most famous and traditional knives belong to the "Classic" line. Those knives are forged, that is formed from a single block of steel. They say there are 40 steps in their production. The steel has a higher carbon content making the metal harder and thus allowing it to retain its sharpness longer. Instead of having a "tail" extending from the blade that is joined to the handle, the metal handle extends the full length of the entire knife. A handle is added by "sandwiching" the blade handle between two exterior sides of the handle and then it is riveted in place with three rivets. The result is a blade that is heaver, a knife that feels much more substantial in the hand, retains its edge longer and has an obviously superior construction.
Which one is for you? It depends of your needs. I own a large Classic set and have owned them for years. While only a casual cook at home, I find these knives a complete joy to own and their effectiveness is superb. Preparation is expedited and cuts are precise. The Gourmet line offered here is a perfectly acceptably group of knives. In the short time I have them they seem very sharp and effective. I don't like the light feel in my hand and the construction, though to most would seem normal, by comparison is clearly a cheap alternative. But it is offered at about half the price. I imagine they will need to be sharpened more often which takes time and I don't enjoy doing. So consider the differences and see what meets your personal needs. Either way Wusthof is a superior knife in my experience and i recommend them highly.

My prized Wusthof 6-inch chef's knife had recently been broken by a burglar using it in an attempt to pry open a locked case and I was glad to be able to replace it.This set would be ideal for someone just setting up a household, or just learning to cook or wanting a good set for a vacation home. It would cost quite a bit more to buy the items individually. A few points:
These knives are from Wusthof's "Gourmet" line of stamped knives. In the past, stamped knives were regarded as inferior to forged knives. Current engineering can produce stamped knives that are just as good as forged knives, and some claim they can be better. These knives are made from high quality steel and have a full tang (the part of the knife that extends into the handle) so the strength and stability of the blade is equal to any. These are lighter weight than the comparable forged knives but well balanced and the handle is classy and comfortable.
The largest knife is a 6" chef's knife. This is an excellent size for a starter or backup chef's knife unless your hand is very large indeed. In my experience, most people are uncomfortable using a larger knife, especially if they have no formal training in how to use a knife. This particular knife has granton-type hollows on the sides of the knife. These hollows make some cheeses and vegetables less likely to stick to the blade, which is a good thing.
The kitchen shears are very sharp and also come apart into two pieces for easy cleaning very important.
The utility knife appears to be exactly the same as a steak knife from Wusthof Gourmet 4-Piece Steak Knife Set which I also recommend. Just right, and a nice smooth edge, not serrated. A serrated edge can be useful, especially for tomatoes but is unnecessary if you keep your knife edges sharp.
The paring knife is small and flexible and is helpful for boning as well as paring.
The wooden knife block is attractive and uses up very little counter real estate, unlike some monsters that are full of unnecessary knives.
I'd recommend getting a ceramic sharpening 'steel' to maintain the knife edges.

When my wife and I are cooking (yes, we do cook together), she made me do most of the chopping (the justification was that "You are so good at it Honey"). I have been using a Chinese kitchen knife for most cutting, I like the wide flat blade that I can pick up little pieces when finish chopping but the knife gets a little heavy after a while. I saw this Santoku Japanese style knife in Target Store, the packaging had the handle sticking out. When I put my hand on it, I like the weight and balance of the blade and the handle seemed comfortable but it cost $37.95, more than what I want to pay for a kitchen knife. Then I found this exact knife on Amazon for $17.98, I ordered it immediately.The knife arrived in five days in a huge Amazon box, 14x20 inches,(come on Amazon guys!). When I first used it, it was not as sharp as I would like it, after I pulled it through my wheel knife sharpener ten times, it was as sharp as any knifes in my collection. I love this knife, it is all about weight and balance and the angle of the handle. I have small Asian hands and it works well for me. I treat all my knifes with respect, never wash knifes in auto dish washer, I sharpen my knifes after every use. My wife is happy.This knife arrived just as decribed and works really good. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great addition to their kitchen.

Got this knife from my brother in-law for birth day gift and it is a very nice addition to my cutlery collation vary sharp and keeps an edge for a long time. Even know the knife is made in china it has the high standards that you would aspect from the Henckels line up and if it was manufactured anywhere else it would cost allot more. We have a half dozen Henckels knives and have been very happy UNTIL NOW. This knife is clearly of an inferior line in that the steel had inclusions in it which rusted the first time I washed it. Yes, there were rust spots on the the stainless steel blade. Poor quality control for this made in China version from the classic German knife company. Hard chopping surfaces, improper storage and other abuse will dull knives, making them dangerous to use. A good steel is essential to keeping knives operating at peak performance, and this steel is the best I've ever used. (Just for the record, I've owned and regularly used a Chicago Cutlery steel for years, a generic steel that came with a knife set and a cheap one from the hardware store bargain bin. The CC one worked better than the hardware store example, but no better than the generic one. All three of these are round and fit in a knife block and when I use them, I'm never sure I'm getting the right results. The steels themselves are slippery, and using them is more of a ritual than a procedure.I chose this steel to review because the holidays were approaching and there's never a better time to review a kitchen tool than at a time when heavy use is on the agenda. I was expecting a steel the same size as the one that came with my knife set. Au contraire, mes amis; this thing is HUGE! It arrived in an enormous box and my jaw dropped when I unpacked it--just a little longer and wider and you'd have a nice cricket bat. It came in a rather flimsy protective case that secures with a snap just above the handle. The snap parted company from the rest of the case, but that's not a huge deal; it was one of those cases that you can't figure out if you're supposed to keep it, anyway. Initially, I was disappointed in the handle. It's brown plastic and I thought the heft and quality of the steel itself deserved wood, but now I appreciate the plastic. It's easier to clean and seems to be durable.
As far as the steel itself goes, I tried it first on a dullish chef's knife before dicing a large onion. Three swipes per side made an enormous difference. The oval steel gives a nice broad surface and much more control while sharpening than does the standard round steel. The knife sliced quickly and cleanly without snagging, which was a level of performance I haven't gotten from that particular knife in a long time. Inspired, I immediately went to work on my other knives with equally impressive results. The steel's extra breadth and length is perfect for large butcher's knives as well as for tiny paring knives. This steel has made it possible to resurrect several knives I'd pretty much given up on because they'd gotten dangerously inaccurate. The oval shape is so lovely and satisfying to work with, I've thrown away my other steels. They feel downright cheesy and I'll never go back.
This steel is brilliantly efficient at what it's supposed to do, the only downside is that storage might be an issue in an average kitchen. It won't fit in a knife block or a drawer. I hung it on my pot rack and it's fine there. Mine is more of utilitarian kitchen than a model home type--I don't mind things showing, but House Beautiful types might not be pleased. I have purchased knife sharpeners before, but they were, from what I could tell, for lazy people and didn't work very well.
This sharpening instrument takes more work. But we had a roasted chicken breast (bone-in) for dinner tonight. I used this tool to sharpen my favorite knife for this specific task beforehand. Mirabile dictu! The knife did a better job of cutting than is its norm! Thus, it appears that this sharpening tool has an upside to it.
Before any definitive word, of course, I will have to use it over time. But, I can say this--my first exercise with this was very promising. . . .

Admittedly, this is my first kitchen sharpening/honing steel. Always one to keep pocketknives and tools sharp, I've been wanting a kitchen steel for some time. Finally, I decided to buy this on a lightning deal, and I'm glad I did.Of course, I can't compare it to other kitchen steels, and I don't know if others are for sharpening as opposed to this being a "honing" steel. But after putting up a hook for it in my kitchen, I used the new steel on about a dozen kitchen knives. Though some took more effort than others, it generally didn't take long before I was able to shave the hair off my arm with most of them. I was planning on buying a set of very high quality kitchen knives, but I'm glad that I bought this first. This steel has brought new life to the knives I have had for years, and should help them hold me over at least until next year's round of holiday sales. Much smarter than spending the money on a set of great knives without having a steel to keep them in shape.
I will echo the other reviewers' sentiments on the appearance and feel of this steel. I love its size and heft, though given that the size requires hanging it (which also should serve as a reminder to use it), I would much prefer if the handle looked nicer. I don't mind the dense plastic so much, but maybe make it black or something. Also, if you plan on giving this as a gift, expect to come up with your own packaging. The flimsy plastic sheath that came with this steel was literally split in half at the seams before I even opened the package. The pictures that another reviewer put up actually make the sheath look nicer than it is, if you can believe that. So don't plan on the sheath for extended use or even initial presentation. Amazon has great customer service, and would probably try and help you get one that at least makes delivery without falling apart, but even if you were the sort to bother them over something like this (especially after being forewarned), you would be wasting your time. I would rather give this without the sheath than seem to cheapen the gift of this nice steel by including the flimsy sheath that will certainly fall apart immediately.
Overall though, I am very glad I bought this product.

Magnetic rack itself is great! If we had room for another one I'd place another order. However, the mounting system is a joke, so use molly bolts and countersink the screw heads. This is a good and sturdy item. I upgraded the hardware right away as it was flimsy and the screws were short. Still a great item for the price.Read other reviews stating this was confusing and hard to install. Not at all the case. This knife has a clipped rather than straight point. This allows you a slightly different cutting angle than a straight point knife. I am very happy with this knife in use, looks and durability. The blade is slim but sharp and works wonderfully for paring and cutting fruits and vegetables. Emerilware by Wusthof knives are a lighter weight (value priced) line yet sturdy and well designed. I don't expect a knife in the $9 price range to last a lifetime (despite the warranty) but this knife is holding up fine for me over six months of just throwing it in the dishwasher. More expensive (over twice as much) forged knives have stiffer blades and are more durable however.The Emerilware by Wüsthof 3-Piece Paring Set is a good value if you want a set of three paring knives. The other two knives are available individually as well. Both the set and individual knives have been available with Amazon's 4 for 3 promotion.My absolute favorite knife (Wusthof) that I had for years went missing. I was happy when I found what I thought an exact replacement and I did. These knives are sharp, light and the best I've ever had. I'm such a fan of Le Creuset, especially the Cherry red color, and a piece I was missing was a serving piece like this for Christmas cookies, little cupcakes or muffins, and other fun treats. My mother has her favorite tiered dish and I was always a little envious of hers, until I found this one. This server is a great addition to my kitchen, which has a lot of bright red accent pieces.Sure, the price is a little steep for a dish, but I consider this a special piece for gatherings. It always gets comments and compliments, and I love the way it looks. Out of the box, it required a bit of assembly, which was easy, and the ring at the top feels very sturdy. I can easily move it from countertop to table, fully loaded with tidbits, and not feel a bit uneasy. Well made, beautiful, this server is a piece I'll enjoy for a lifetime.
BOSKA Holland Taste Cheese Slicer for Young Cheese - Rosewood
I have tried about everything over the years to slice your "joe average" cheddar cheese. We live in Oregon so, we get Tillamook cheese. It's a medium cheddar cheese. I own a nice big set of Wusthof knives and I own all three of their cheese knives. None of them work very well. I've tried the stainless steel wire & wheel device and it doesn't cut smoothly or consistently. My wife for years has used a potato peeler but I think the slices are too thin.This Boska cheese slicer is the best of all applications. It slices with very little resistance and it makes even, consistent slices. I love it!
The only thing I can say is you might want to get the one with a metal handle because my kids use this and it's going to one day end up in the dishwasher and I'm sure the wood will be shot!Works great and looks great for the price you pay. I've had this for a couple of months now and I haven't had any problems with it. It gives me nice even slices of cheese.

This thing works just okay. It is not the one to use if you are cutting up a lot of cheese. For that you want the marble cheese slicer.
