King 47506 1000/6000 Combination Grit WaterstoneI would have given 5 stars if there had of been a small bottle that came with the kit that could be used to hold water for the stones. It holds up well IF you know how to use and care for it. Sharpening with a stone ( actually a series of stones ) is not natural. To use one you should readup on a couple of internet articles on knife sharpening. I use a low grit, say 600-800 to get the shape and bevel right and bring the edge down to a rough sharp. This is fine for an axe, but, not a knife. After the bevel and most of the dull edge has been ground down ( no light reflects off the cutting edge ) move to the 1000 grit stone. At 1000 grit you will remove a lot less material , but all you are after is to get the scratches off the bevels and refine the edge a little more. When the edge is sharp enough to cut notebook paper without snags it is time for the 6000 grit stone. WARNING, the 6000 grit stone is soft and you can gouge it out in a single stroke. Keep it wet so the metal shavings float on the surface instead of being ground into the stone and reducing the cutting power of some of the surface area. This is a polishing stone, not a sharpeniing stone. It polishes the edge you put on with the 1000 grit stone. It polishes the bevels to a near mirror edge as well as helping to remove the little wire edge that ends up on all sharpenings. Now strop the edge (fatigue the wire edge till it comes off), you will know when it is complete when you run a finger UP the bevel and do not feel a small lip at the top where the edge is located. If you still feel the edge then strop some more; in a pinch, you can even strop on the palm of your hand. Remember to strop both sides alternately till the wire edge is gone. Now back to the 6000 grit stone and with LIGHT pressure, refinish the edge again but stop short of putting another wire edge on the blade. The edge now should cut newspaper when only supported by one side. Just remember one rule, the higher the bevel angle the lower the "Feel" and fine cutting power of the edge in general and the lower the angle the sharper the blade will feel. There is a trade off with high bevel angles on an axe that will keep the axe sharp longer and the low angle of a knife where it will require sharpening more often.

Now, wash off the stone surfaces and use an old cloth to scrup the surfaces. Get and use a Nagura stone to do a final cleaning and leveling of the 6000 grit side. Never use a Nagura stone on anything less than 6000 grit or you will eat it up and prematurely wear out the stone. Just keep in mind, the Nagura is for cleaning and trueing the 6000 and higher grit stones and should not be used as a sharpening stone itself. The second use for the Nagura stone is to create the sharpening "lather" needed to speed up the sharpening process. Place the stone under water and then to the work stone and act as if you are working on the edge. This process may need to be done 3 or 4 times. You will note a foam form on the top of your cutting edge mixed with a lot of water. Now sharpen your edge. You will get a faster and sharper knife.

I have been a carpenter for almost 12 years. The first 6 years were mainly rough carpentry and my stone of choice was an oil stone. I have since moved on to finish carpentry and woodworking. Razor sharp chisels and planes are a must now! And this combination stone, along with a 800-1000 grit waterstone, produce mirror sharp edges that last a long time. And, unlike an oil stone, waterstones can be honed flat again and cut the metal much faster. And you don't have to worry about the stone cloging.

These King Stones are legitimate Japanese Water Stones made in, you guessed it, Japan. They are extremely versitile and are the highest quality stones I have used. However, there are a few more good companies out there. Water stones are true to the craft of knife honing and sharpening and is a useful skill to teach yourself. I highly recommend watching virtuovice (YouTube Name) on YouTube for excellent tutorials on how to sharpen with stones.

The lower grit stones like the 250 and 400 are great for taking out chips in the blades or reprofiling the edge to fit your needs or preferences. As a camper who beats on knifes and axes, I really need this benefit to take out those chips and these stones do so beautifully.

A good stone grit to breach the gab between the lower grits and the finishing stone is the 1000 grit. This will help smooth out the edge and give it some great sharpness. It also makes finishing the edge with a 3000 or 4000 grit stone an easier and less time-consuming step in the process. 6000 and 8000 grit stones are not needed at all in my opinion. Finally, you should use a leather strop with a green and black compound to really get a good edge.

Bottom Line and Reccommending Sharpening System:

1.) 250/1000 grit King Water Stone

2.) 3000 or 4000 grit King Stone

3.) Leather strop with compound

You only really need the 250, 1000, and 3000 (or 4000) grit stones with the strop. I have seen the strop put a better edge than 8000 grit stones. Keep in mind a strop is only 30 bucks or so, and you could almost spend $100 on an 8000 grit stone. This reccommended sytem will make a butter knife scary sharp if you wanted it too. However, the stones are expensive and will loose shape over time depending on how much you use them. But the time you use them will definitely yield better results than a spyderco Sharpmaker (I have one). I also reccommend some sort of a stone holder like the Steelex Sharpening Stone Holder. This works well and makes it easier to work with.

Very good whetstone for regular use. Will sharpen any kitchen knife without ruining its edge if you know what you're doing, be they German knives (I use it with my Wusthofs) or more delicate Japanese knives, such as Global or Shun. Highly recommended.

I have gone nuts with this thing. I have sharpened every knife in the kitchen except the steak knives with this awesome combo. The 1000 grit (brown side) is perfect for sharpening up dull knives and the 6000 grit (beige side) polishes the edge to a highly reflective, almost mirror finish.

HOWEVER, this combo is not good for an extremely dull edge or for a blade that needs to be re-profiled. It is possible to slowly re-profile with the 1000 grit, but for me it was an arduous and ultimately wasteful task. I ended up buying a 400/800 grit Norton tool sharpening stone from Home Depot for the knife I had to re-profile.

In conclusion, I am extremely satisfied with this combo King Stone, it does what it's supposed to do. I sharpen my knives at 15 degrees a side on 1000 then 6000, then I strop carefully with a paddle-backed leather strop and stropping compound from Bark River (not on Amazon). This results in crazy sharp knives.

The next step is Chosera stones, they are much more expensive, but I hear they are the cats pajamas :)

NOTE: I was not careful with the 6000 grit side at first and used too steep an angle, the knife actually bit into the 6000 grit and took off a small shallow chunk, the stone is still working great though.

It is cute and functional. I do not think I will use the cutting board side because I have cutting boards but I have used the trivet side and it is highly effective. OMG! I was given one of these 39 years ago and, at first sight, wasn't impressed because I was "seduced" with all the fancy electric kitchen gadgets.

After just one use, I was in love with this little gadget and used it religiously while my children were growing up. After DECADES of repeated use, the handle finally came off and, not knowing how to repair it, I threw it away. That was one of the saddest days of my life because, until now, I couldn't find another one.

This thing out performs every "modern" kitchen appliance I have and is so versatile, easy to use/clean and takes up MINIMAL space.

I like my ground beef finely crumbled in pasta sauce etc and this little gadget is EXCELLENT for doing just that. Without it I've had to go through the time, trouble and mess of "pulsing" it in my food processor.

I use a stainless steel bowl that's about twice the width of the chopper and it works beautifully!

Nuts, boiled eggs, onions, green peppers, tomatoes, meats etc are no match for this little devil. The actual chopping time is longer but I can get the job done in less time and work than what using the "modern" electric gizmos.

I'm a southern cook and the plain blade is perfect for cutting biscuits etc.

Today, finding my little chopper again, is one of the happiest days of my life.

I bought these choppers because my mother had one when I was a kid and it was one of my jobs to chop whatever we were having for lunch or dinner. The one she had was sturdy with a nice rounded handle that had some heft to it. These, however, are very flimsy, bend easily, and are not comfortable in the hand. They do, however, work very well. They are extremely sharp and do the job easily. If they had a more comfortable grip and were a heavier gauge metal that did not bend out of shape so easily, they would get five stars.

I can well remember as a child my father using one of these while making egg salad because he liked the eggs finely chopped and this worked like a charm. I use a high end Henkles chef knife my wife bought & I love that as well but Henckle's dropped the line so I went with Wusthof. This knife & fork are gorgeous! If I had no other use for the set I'd take down the deer head from over the fireplace and hang this carving set! The quality is 4,0. I could not find a manufacturing flaw and the knife is super sharp. At $120 bucks it's not that expensive for a tool that will last a lifetime. I'll be buying more of these Grand Prix to replace my El Cheapo knives. The handle on these Grand Prix knives is very comfortable and slip resistant. The weight of the knife is light enough for extended, easy use but substantial enough to do some real work. I realize that's a subjective viewpoint but I like a heavy chef's knife but the rest only need sharpness to perform their tasks. Highly recommended! The set arrived a day ahead of schedule. I like buying only the knives I need rather than a set that counts the block, sharpening steel, scissors, & steak knives in the "set of knives." Amazon is great!

It does work great, but it wasn't until I saw this set and decide to give it a try. I tried to slice lemon for my drinks and when I used my original knife, it actually squeezed out juices. But when I use the knife I just got, it cut through without having to put in too much force. I am surprised, so I give it a 5 stars. I also like how it came with a stylish design set rather than the regular wooden knife holder!

Pro: Stylish set, good packaging.

Cons: I wish it comes in more sizes/pcs.

The set is a traditional polished silver steel color just like most of Reed & Barton's other sets. For an accurate color, go to R&B's website and search for it (or look at the picture of the serving pieces on Amazon for this set which is closer to the real look). I couldn't have been more pleased with the set once I got it. The set is modern, but with enough simplicity to still be classic. I wanted a set that was more neutral/versatile in look.

The weight is solid as well and I like the balance of each piece in the hand. It's far more robust than the cheap 18/0 set I bought before from Bed & Bath. Also, very important this set is truly 18/10 stainless steel. I double checked with the manufacturer beforehand. Be careful as there are many flatware sets on Amazon that are incorrectly designated as 18/10 when they are in actuality 18/0 or 18/8!

For those of you who don't know, 18/10 refers to the proportion of chromium to nickel in the stainless steel alloy. The addition of nickel to the alloy increases its corrosion resistance while adding a bright polished appearance, hardness, and exceptional resistance to all temperatures. As the nickel level is increased, the quality of the stainless steel is increased. The "top of the line" boast 10% nickel content (or 18/10), the highest quality available in stainless steel. 18/0 is the lowest quality and has no nickel in it. Believe me, the 18/10 difference is immediately visible to the naked eye flatware looks more bright and water tends to bead on the steel almost as if there is a wax coating on it.

I got the set for $90, which in my mind is a good price for a 45 piece 18/10 set. Couldn't be more pleased and would highly recommend this set!

I dont know who the reviewer below talked to at Reed & Barton, but this set is NOT 18/10. Its 18/0. I confirmed with Reed & Barton that this set is 18/0. Very Disappointed.

Love this flatware!! I have some other Reed and Barton pieces and know the quality they offer and was shocked at the prices Amazon offers. This flatware is priced significantly less than on the other websites I looked at. The flatware is simple but still bold. It has a slightly larger size to it but is not too big. It has a nice, solid weight. It has washed well for me. I'm very happy with it and recommend it.

I love this flatware. For the price it has a high end feel and the flatware itself is nice and sturdy (if you have young boys you may understand how the tines of forks can mysteriously bend). The most important thing is that it fits my small hands. And the Santoku style feels natural to use.

I work in a store that sells many brands of Santoku knives but didn't have anything small enough for me to have control. The knife rep taught us the major high quality brands will last 3x longer. I can see why, but if they are too long and awkward, that doesn't help me.

The grip, as always for OXO, feels very natural. Other OXO products I love are a pot scrubber brush, a wisk, a veggie brush.

Pretty large block with lots of slots. My previous one had about half the slots, but I've accumulated enough knives that I use regularly enough to justify this thing. Sits on my counter-top next to the stove, and no issues in the year I've owned it. For a block of wood, it does seem overpriced, but the price is comparable to pretty much every other block I've seen.

The knife block looked fine when it arrived, but then developed two cracks at about 5 weeks. I tried to process an exchange on Amazon and was informed there was a 30-day window that had expired so I am stuck with the cracked block. I was replacing the original 17 slot block as I have purchased addition knives. The 17 slot block is about 5 years old and in great shape so this must be a lower quality after market block....beware.

I was really looking forward to this knife block since it had room for 2+ Chef Knife size blades and a cleaver. However I was very unhappy with the near garbage quality of it. The front section where the steak knives are held was glued on with a large amount of glue coming around edges and there were large gaps where it didn't fit correctly against the large part. Also in 2 of the slots there there large wedges that were hanging down that caught the blades and stopped the knife from going in. Also the the "Wusthof" that is shown in the picture as engraved into the block was not there. It was only a cheap metal sticker on the front where there name on it. I ended up going to Sur La Table, and purchased the same knife black but in the store brand for about $10.00 less just in a different color, and of much better quality.

The pictures do not do the set justice. There is a brushed appearance to a portion of the handles and a shiny portion as well. For me, the true test of flatware is the weight. I don't like flimsy, lightweight flatware--and this set has a very comfortable weight and feel in your hand. It's a must buy.

Looks great, hefty but not heavy. Seems to do well in the dishwasher. Perfect for our everyday use.

The knives are a bit longer than the rather small space in the drawer divider.

This stainless steel flatware has an attractive pattern and looks like it will hold up well. All the pieces are larger than I expected, but maybe that's normal compared to my daintier set from 30 years ago. They are very substantial but have good balance and are not too heavy. They are nicely suited for everyday use and could be used for special occasions as well.

Amco Clean Cut Apple Corer

Amco Clean Cut Apple CorerThis apple corer is very nicely made ... stainless steel blades embedded in aluminum handle.

Two minor complaints:

1) Made in China (I prefer to buy U.S. built products whenever possible)

2) center hole for apple core is a little small. Even if perfectly centered on apple, I occasionally have to dig out pieces of apple seed from the apple segments.

I've tried many of these slicers and the plastic ones will usually break st the handles after some use. This one is made from cast iron and is solid all the way you can feel the difference just by picking it and it has a protective blade cover. I've been very pleased.

This is a sturdy, well-made cutter. The extra wide handles also help in forcing through a large apple. I purchased this product to replace a plastic-rimmed apple cutter, and this one is far superior. It is definitely worth the few extra dollars.

This apple corer is very well made; maybe a little too well made. The blades are very thick and not as sharp as I would have expected. When coring an apple you need to push down very hard and fast. It definitely slices and cores, but it spits apple juice all over the counter and into my face.

I can't complain about the quality or the function, but it is a little messy.

I chose to buy the Amco because it was made completely from metal and not plastic. It requires some force to use, but it slices well. If the apple is not uniform, you may have to trim some seeds. Overall, I am happy with the purchase because my kids want to eat more apples now that we have this corer.

This is a very hearty Clever. It's the best one that I've ever owned. I checked the blade pitch and longevity and this is the best mechanically and overall I've owned. It's guaranteed you will not be disappointed, My wife doesn't like it because it's to big for her.

Kotobuki 9-1/2-Inch Gyuto KnifeI like the knife just fine, it's for work so I didn't want anything too fancy. Seems defect free, the wooden handle is on the light side, but it's bolstered so the balance isn't too off center. Comes sharpened. I think it fits well in my large to average hand. If anything it would be small. As of now it does seem a little better than what I expected for the price. If this wasn't my third chef's knife, I would be a little bit more generous in my review. I have a nice Carbon Steel and another I generally keep at home, but they are also much more expensive. It's held it's edge for a couple weeks, and it's much nicer using this than anything work provides and they have theirs sharpened weekly. Hopefully some of the other chef's will see me using it, copy me, or borrow it, and get just as knife happy as me.

i have had this knife for about a year now. it is a litttle UNDERpriced if you ask me, this thing has taken a beating and is still with me. i think it is a little on the lighter side, which is why i like it. i use it almost everyday, and i had it throughout culinary school as well. it hasnt stained, and it holds its edge very well. perfect knife for someone looking to get a japanese blade but doesnt want to drop 200 bucks.

I select a design based on the decor of the houses. The boards are flexible and allow chopped food to be easily poured into recipes. One must be careful not to put anything hot on them. Now, I'm buying everyone a new one! I bought this design for my seaside home and I love it!

OOPS. What happened? The original set came in a blue package, the two this time came in green and although the blade was the same, I don't like the new handle feel too much. I have bought several of these and this time I'm slightly disappointed in the feel and grip of the handle. When something simply works, don't change it.

This knife is very "hand friendly" balanced well and has a good cutting edge. Holds its edge about as well as any I've had. Found it very useful. Amazon has it priced quite inexpensively.

Admittedly my original, well-used and loved Chicago Cutlery knife set is over 25 years old, so perhaps some of the smoothness comes over time. However, in this one both the wood and the metal feel rougher and of lower quality than the old one. The handle is also about 1/4 inch shorter; the combination of shorter handle and slightly longer blade makes it a little less comfortable in handling. All in all, it is a very acceptable knife; it just loses in the comparison contest with its original.

I was looking for more flexibility in the knife. I thought it should give more than it did. I would not recommend it if you have another choice. The price is good, but not if you have to purchase another one to do the job you thought this one would do. Save your pennies and get the knife that's right for you...and the job you have to do with the knife.

The tang is slightly larger than the handle and can be felt sticking out a little on both sides of the handle. The copper rivets also are slightly above the handle, and can be felt. Poor attention to detail when finishing or maybe they have skipped that finishing step.

Otherwise good balance, cuts well, both as expected from Chicago Cutlery.

When I received these the box was somewhat smashed. But the set looked ok, the blades a bit flimsy. On first cut of the cake, the handle snapped in two on the knife.

We purchased both the flutes and service set!! Which fit our friends wedding day perfectly and she loved them!!

The only bummer was the colors did not show the detail as well as we had hoped :(

Also after seeing it for sale on many other websites I learned that most websites offered free engraving on the servers!!

I was not very happy that the only website that did not offer it was here!

I ended up having to pay $20 more dollars to have it engraved elsewhere!
