I have been in need of a quality paring knife for some time. Though I've not used this bird's beak style before, I find it to be a good knife and am glad I purchased it. If you're used to a standard paring knife, there is a bit of a learning curve while you adjust to the different style. I would have given it 5 stars, but the very tip of the blade has a tiny imperfection (bend) in it. This is a very affordable electric sharpener, and is easy to use. I do find that hand-honing my knives with my steel does work out better than the hone on the sharpener. Although a water stone or tri-hone is a better choice, if you have knives you just don't want to take that much time with, and you don't want to spend much money on a sharpener, this is a good choice.Best knife sharpener that I have ever had! I received this yesterday and could not be more satisfied. I sharpened all of my kitchen, hunting, and pocket knifes within a couple of hours. This would have taken days with stones. It does have a learning curve so start with an old knife and follow the directions. If you buy one and it doesn't work, then you are not doing it correctly. It took me a few times to get it right but now I can get them razor sharp. I have a bandage on my finger to prove it.I would have given it 5 stars but it does not work well with thick hunting knives (I have two Buck knives) because the slot is barely wide enough to fit the blade. I got them sharpened but it took some finesse.

I've owned this sharpener for about two months and I still love it. I finally used my hunting knives cleaning a whitetail deer and they worked flawlessly. They cut clean and did not loose their edge.
The non mechanical slot works great for touching up your knives through repeated use.

I do have a correction: it is ASSEMBLED in the USA, not manufactured. Oh well, better than all in China.

My father was a butcher and I've still got several of his professional knives (he passed away more than 25 years ago). I've used a Chef's Choice sharpener for many years on these knives and they still have the same sharp edge my father obtained with his professional sharpening stone (which I find difficult to use). My old sharpener had an electric honing side, which I was never particularly fond of, so I was happy to find my new sharpener had a manual side for that. This set is a a little unusual because it skips the traditional soup spoon and dessert fork that most sets like to include. I don't have much use for those things myself, so it fills my needs perfectly. For a cheap dinner set for a studio apartment it's perfect. The pieces are a little light so you can tell they aren't particularly expensive, but the design looks great and I think they'll still be fairly durable. The packaging was very nice as well.For someone in a small apartment this set is about perfect. If you live with roommates, or your family, or entertain frequently, you'll probably want a larger set. For the price, however, it's excellent in terms of looks and feel.
EDITI've now owned the set for 4 months. The knives have developed a bit of rust where the blade connects to the handlejust a thin line at the seam, on all four of the knives. This doesn't change my score, but if you or your guests will be disturbed (and you'll have to be looking closely) you might want to invest in some more expensive silverware. Aside from this flaw, the set is still performing well for me and is still a good value at the price.I bought the product a week ago, and it started rusting already. It's a cheap and low-quality product. I am really disappointed.

We bought this set to use at work, but we clean the utensils in our dishwasher at home. We have had some trouble with rusty or other funny spots appearing after washing, even after the first few uses. This could be partially due to our dishwasher detergent, which we didn't realize contained citrus. Apparently this is a no-no, and we have switched, but it still seems to happen occasionally. If you hand-wash, this probably wouldn't be a problem.My wife also believes the utensils have a 'metallic' taste; I haven't really noticed.

Looked it up in Amazon ( always my "to go" merchandiser ) and was very glad to find it and ( as always ) at a much lower price. The quality is superb, as expected from Yamazaki, and the detail in the handles absolutely beautiful. Very happy with the purchase. I have a smaller version of this same cutting board but find it doesn't give me enough surface area for large chopping jobs. The size of this particular cutting board is perfect. The material its made of is durable, doesn't stain easily, resists scratches, and doesn't dull my knives. The only negative comment is that it arrived slightly bowed; so, it didn't sit flat on my counter. I manipulated it to make it flatter rather than return it. Out of the box this is the most dull Global knife I have ever used. I had a hard time pealing a potato with this knife. I thought I wanted a "birds beak" shaped knife. However after using it, the curve is useless. There is nothing this knife can do that a straight paring knife cannot do. The turned blade makes it difficult to find the edge while cutting through a fruit or vegetable. Also, this design is very difficult to sharpen.Global makes a good product, and I have many Global knives that I love. However, this design of knife I would not recommend, pick out a regular shaped paring knife. You will be happier in the long run.

Kershaw-Shun makes the best knives I've ever owned, bar none. They come with a razor edge and are easy to re-hone with just a few strokes on the Kershaw-Shun steel (well worth purchasing to accompany this set). All their knives utilize the damascus pattern and perfectly crafted profile slice through darn near anything (food-like anyway) with ease. The scalloped detailing on this one creates air pockets which prevent food from adhering to the sides, creating even better cutting efficiency than their already high level. I can cut perfectly thin, beautiful slices from any fish time after time using this fine knife. The weight and balance are perfect. 9-Inch Slicing -This is an impressive knife. It's sleek and sharp like the rest of its siblings. I know the granton edge is supposed to reduce drag, but I'm not certain this is a necessity for a knife I use three times a year. There is a version without the grantons that's a few dollars cheaper.
This is an expensive, but lifetime investment. I encourage you to visit stores and feel the knives in your hand to make sure you are comfortable with them. I'm a big fan of Shun knives and own several other. You could get away slicing meat with a chef's knife, but the low profile and length on this make it much easier. The metal on these knives are brittle, so you need to take care to avoid hitting the fork. Also be sure to cut on wood or plastic only. If it's your first time with a high-quality knife -these things are sharp, so be warned. Electric knives shred the meat and seem to make more juices fall out, not the case with a manual knife like this. Pick up a smooth honing steel if you don't already have one to keep the edge straight.Oak and Walnut Steak Knife Block
I purposely chose this knife block because it was made in the USA. While the workmanship is adequate, I do have to admit that I'm a bit disappointed it was not made better. When laminating sheets of wood together, there should be no gap between laminations. This has some minor gaps. The finish is a bit on the thin side. Had a finer saw-blade been used when cutting the block to size, the finish would probably have looked better. Unfortunately, either a dull blade, or a course one was used and saw marks can be seen beneath the finish.While this steak knife block is attractive looking and quite serviceable, I pay a bit more for American made products because I expect superior quality. Mine didn't have that. I hope that was a fluke.I bought two of these steak knife blocks and really like them. You can tell right away that the blocks were carefully handcrafted, the slits are all even and appropriately vertical. The price is a bonus because one would expect these to cost much more!

I bought this item because of the soft grip. The wood block was ok, except it was missing one rubber foot and the other 3 were terribly misplaced, so I gave it away and just used my old kniferack. If these knives last two years, I got my money's worth. They are what they are: inexpensive yet functional kitchen knives. If anyone spends more than $30 for knives they're just pretentious, because these knives do what any $100 set will do, i.e. chop and mince veggies and slice some cooked meats. TIP: when you chop etc, never slide the sharp side of the blade across your cutting surface when you brush your food aside; instead, reverse the blade, using the dull side. That'll save your blade from premature dullness and I see a lot of people do that, brush with the sharp side... yeesh... nails on a chalkboard for me. LOL! Bon Appetit! This is one of only two knife blocks that I could find online with a space for a cleaver. It is well designed, slanting enough that it can fit under a cabinet and still provide easy access. The quality is excellent. The price at Amazon was significantly less than other merchants, at the time I purchased, it was easily 40% of the others. It seems to have gone up a little. Always shop around-I could have paid as much as $170 for this at an upscale online merchant.This was the solution when we wanted to replace a couple of cheap knife blocks. We consolidated all our knives, of all shapes and sizes, into this one block. The quality is good and free shipping was a good deal as it was very heavy. We have upper cabinets that are a few inches lower than average. This block easily fit underneath with room enough to pull even the longest knife. Between salads and tacos, my family goes through a fair amount of lettuce. Although it is not as healthy as many of the other varieties, we prefer iceberg lettuce. After washing the head of lettuce and removing the outside leaves, I like to use a lettuce knife to cut out the core and surrounding area. Using a plastic lettuce knife instead of a metal knife helps prevent the lettuce from browning, keeping it fresher longer. Depending on what we're doing with the lettuce, sometimes the leaves can simply be torn apart. However, if we're using lettuce for tacos, I like to cut it in skinny strips. Again, I like to use the lettuce knife for this. I had a previous lettuce knife which I ordered from a catalog, but it broke in two after a few years. I ordered this Fox Run lettuce knife as a replacement. I was surprised when it arrived to discover how flimsy it was (almost like a dollar store item), especially for the price. So far, it has done its job, but I have been very careful with it. I really do not expect it to hold up long. So I do recommend the use of a lettuce knife should you wish to cut your lettuce, but I would suggest finding something more durable than this one.Update June 2013: Lettuce knife broke a few weeks ago, even though I was always very careful while using it. I definitely would NOT recommend.Perfect for making quick work on lettuce for a salad. While a metal knife will cause the lettuce to turn brown, this nifty little knife works like a charm and no browning.

I've owned one of these knives for 8+ years and love it so much that I recently purchased another as a gift for my college-age nephew. The serrations on this knife are concave, and as a result, the blade immediately "bites" into whatever you are cutting. (Convex-edged knives have a tendency to slip until they've penetrated the crust or outer surface of the food.) After more than eight years of frequent use, the blade is still in excellent condition. It is every bit as good as a knife costing three or four times the price.One more note: I have Victorinox knives with both rosewood and Fibrox handles. Although the rosewood handles feel great in the hand and look beautiful, the Fibrox handles do give you a better grip. That's not as critical an issue with a knife used mainly to slice bread, but if you're looking to buy a chef's knife for cutting hard foods like winter squash, I would go with the Fibrox.

I bought this knife based on reviews. I would have gone with the 10 inch but it was not available through Amazon and I think having to pay the additional S&H ridiculous. I bought this as a birthday gift for my wife. She loves it. With this 6" knife and it's 5" counterpart, most all of the small kitchen tasks are easily handled. For slicing and chopping we have a Messermeister 6" chef knife and a 7" vegetable cleaver. Both very nice knives as well.Use care with the slender tip of this knife. I bent the tip when I speared the breast bone while halving a chicken breast. This was misuse, not a fault with the knife. I have since ordered a cleaver for halving chicken breasts. I was able to straighten the tip and it is as good as new.

I bought this set from Bed bath and Beyond in Oklahoma City. The box on top says the composition to be 18/8 stainless steel. That means that at least spoon and forks should have nearly the following composition:iron 74%
Chromium 18%
Nickel 8%
When this composition is exact then this grade of steel is non-magnetic, meaning that it will not be attracted by a magnet. I did this test on all spoons and forks in this set. The five teaspoons in this set failed the test. (meaning that they had less than 8% Nickel). So how does that affect you? Those five teaspoons will develop some rust in some form some time because stainless steel with less than 8% Nickel is not rust proof. J. A. Henckel is making a fool out of all of you. Buy it if you like to be treated that way.This flatware pattern, Rapture, appeals to men and women alike. It fits with any decor and looks beautiful. The knives and forks are large, which is what I like and they add a touch of class to everyday dining.

Cooks Illustrated gave this sharpener a very strong review (their best-of-class as I recall) and I reluctantly laid down my trusty sharpening steel to give it a try. Once I got this special 3-beveled edge on our knives I never regretted the decision to switch. What's particularly nice is that the edge returns so easily with a quick touch-up on the finest setting.I've also notice virtually no obvious loss of metal on the knives after many touch-ups, a problem with other sharpeners that can quickly consume your blades. If you want an edge that makes you feel more like a surgeon than a chef, this will deliver.
[The only downside is that it's no good for serrated knives, but their newer model 120 will handle them too.]I am a carpenter, not a chef. However, as such, I know the value of sharp tools. They cut faster, easier and are much safer. A dull tool or knife is unpredictable and this makes it more dangerous than a sharp one.
My wife (a much better cook than me) and I have some high quality knives and some knives of dubious quality. I took about 1 hour and sharpened about 10 of them. The results were great. It is a little tricky to get used to holding the knife while in the slots... you are kind of balancing it in your hand instead of holding it. You have to let the magnets guide it. After a few knives, it was much easier.
The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is that I can get a quality knife a little sharper with one of my wetstones. This only applies to the good knives I have. What I do is sharpen the good ones on the machine, then finish with a few swipes on my stone. It is a lot faster than doing the whole thing by hand.
The lower quality knives don't seem to respond to this as well. However, they are MUCH sharper than they were before.

I'm a hunter and a fisherman (mostly fisherman) and have had a devil of a time over the years keeping fillet knives sharp. In order to fillet a fish, a knife sharp is everything. I used the chef's choice sharpener on my fillet knives and it got them almost razor sharp. I just received the sharpener today along with a Henckels santoku. I sharpened a half dozen of the old Henckels at home and found the sharpening process to be very quick. The last time I had sharpened the knives was on a whetstone and this process is definitely much faster. I can get the knives about as sharp as the manual process. I was hoping for the 'razor' sharp edge that comes with the brand new knives, but it seems that may not be achievalble with the tool. I used the new knife as a benchmark, and it was not possible for me to get the same degree of sharpness. The machine does provide edges, though, that are definitely usable, and probably better than the average person can achieve on a whetstone. And much faster.I first followed the instructions that came with the sharpener, and it was quite hard to grasp. It asks the user to hold the knife lightly and let the magnet align the knife. What worked for me was to look directly over the machine so that I can see the contact between the knife edge and the moving abrasive. By looking at the angle and trying to keep the angle consistent, working with the magnet becomes quite intuitive. By trying to keep the angle constant, the hand subconsciously lets the magnet align the knife. If you pull the knife blindly, this process doesn't work quite as well... at least at the beginning, I suppose, since I just started to use the product.
Overall I am happy with the sharpener, and would use this over manual sharpening any day. If I were a sushi chef who whose life depended on the sharp edge, I would probably not use it, but to keep a set of knives at a reasonable condition for everyday cooking, the machine is definitely more than adequate.

The product is well-made with both metal and plastic components. The power stick houses the 200 watts motor, making it the heaviest of all the pieces. It has parts that click into place and are removed by holding in a button on the power stick. Pushing the button while simultaneously attaching/detaching a part may prove a bit difficult if your hands are weak. In addition, there are: small, metal, double beaters; a plastic beaker for mixing; a plastic bowl with a tiny, metal blade (for chopping); and a long, metal immersion stick for blending (in the beaker, in a pot, etc.).
GOOD for LIMITED SPACE
For the price, you are getting three kitchen helpers: a blender, a mixer, and a food processor. That's a good deal if you lack money to buy all three products and/or are short on kitchen storage space. The Frigidaire Professional Immersion Hand Blender/Mixer is great for those who live in dorms, where space is severely restricted. It would also be a good choice for apartment dwellers who have limited kitchen space for small appliances.
PRODUCT'S LIMITATIONS
If you are preparing very small amounts of food, this is a handy appliance to own. However, if you cook for more than one or two, this is not the appliance you want. The manual advises that, the chopper, for example, "....works well for herbs, nuts, and some vegetables...". In other words, this is not for heavy duty food preparations. The chopper bowl itself is quite small as is its metal blade.
The 200 watts motor has its drawbacks. While strong, it must be allowed to rest for a full 60 seconds after 30 seconds of use. Using it without these rest breaks may cause the motor to overheat. To whip two extra large egg whites, it took a full 30 seconds (on the highest, TURBO speed), using the metal beaters. The result was very well whipped egg whites (that were not even forming soft peaks). After the requisite one minute rest, I whipped the whites again for 30 seconds. Soft peaks were only just beginning to form. Should you want to make whipped cream, you can do so in quantities of up to 17.5 oz.. However, the manual's timing of 50-70 seconds on TURBO will not yield stiff peaks. In other words, the work/rest/work/rest operation is time consuming.
I put a few ounces of frozen whole almonds into the food processor to see how it would chop. It worked well. But, it took several minutes to bring it to a finely ground almond powder. Pushing the machine even further, I added a little coconut oil and whirled the motor again. Within several seconds, I had about 3.5 ounces of almond butter. Nice job!
PRODUCT COMPARISONS/CONTRASTS
The immersion stick has the same amount of power as my Cuisinart SmartStick(tm), but the former has more attachments, making it a more versatile, useful appliance. While the SmartStick (tm) has limited speeds, the Frigidaire has variable speeds and a TURBO setting. Frigidaire's model is heavier in the hand than the Cuisinart's version. With fewer parts, the Cuisinart is easier to clean-up, but the Frigidaire can do more for your various blending, whipping, chopping, and mixing needs.
With that said, neither of these does what my Miallegro 9090 Mitutto 550-Watt Immersion Hand Blender, Professional-style can do. And it doesn't need to rest until the work is done. This one is about 53% of the cost of the Frigidaire model. The Cuisinart SmartStick(tm) is 27% of the price of the Frigidaire.
THE BOTTOM LINE
So what does all this mean? If you do a lot of food prep, and for more than a couple of people, and time and appliance power are important, get a model that doesn't need to 'nap' in between work sessions.
If you are cooking for just one or two, but the priorities are space-saving and multiple-use appliances, and your time is not important, the Frigidaire Professional Immersion Hand Blender/Mixer is perfect for your needs. It makes very smooth "smoothies" in the beaker. I haven't had occasion to try pureeing a large pot of lentil or bean soup, but I am sure it will come in handy when I make up some this fall.
The bottom line? If you want a professional immersion blender and are willing to spend two to three times the cost of a basic unit, you'll get a lot of function and control as well as versatility. A very impressive design.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I used to use the Miallegro 9080 Mitutto 450-Watt Immersion Hand Blender, so any comparisons is based on my experience with that product. I must say I am impressed with how smooth my dips and soups are coming out with this Frigidaire. My Miallegro would still leave things somewhat grainy or tiny flecks of herbs left, but things get much more pulverized/mixed with this Frigidaire. I like that the gaps in the metal at the base of the immersion blender arm are bigger than the Miallegro so it allows larger chunks to get pulled in through the gaps and chopped up without having to tilt the end of blender around to fit chunks under the blade to chop it up. Being able to keep the blender upright instead of tilting cuts back on the splashback a bit. The arm gives you about 7.5" blending depth to work with the Miallegro only gave about 6.5". With the gaps larger at the bottom, I also find it easier to work a sponge around the blade when I want to wash it.One drawback for me is the Frigidaire is wider at the base, so you might not be able to fit it to the bottom of some containers you used to mix in before. My Miallegro required 2-5/8" diameter clearance, the Frigidaire needs 3-3/8" at least.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program This is the third immersion blender we've used over the past six or so years (the others are still working and being used in different parts of the house). It's also the one that seems designed to be used by heavy-duty users and/or professional chefs/cooks (as in a restaurant or other type of professional establishment).Depending on your needs and usage, this is either overpriced overkill or one of the best additions to your food-prep appliance line-up.
From my perspective as an at-home, non-commercial cook who uses an immersion blender several times a week, here are the pros and cons:
Pros:
* Clean, stylized design. Most folks would have no problem keeping this on display (A plastic vertical, wall mounting unit is included.)
* Ease of adding and using attachments. Unlike some immersion blenders, the whipping whisks and the main knife piece are easily attached to and deattached from the power base.
The extra long 10-inch knife attachment is a plus or minus depending on the type/size of vessel that contains what you are trying to blend.
* Sturdy--and substantial. The main unit and the attachments (especially the knife, which is the most heavy-duty type I've ever used) don't feel as if they will fall apart with frequent use. As always, a lot depends on how you treat items. We haven't dropped any of our other immersion blenders but the other two seem as if they would break a bit on hard impact, from a fall or otherwise. Not this unit!
* Power: You can vary the blender attachment speed from low to high and it also includes a Turbo setting. We make a lot of soups and even the low speed made for fast, smooth (and spatter-proof) blending. Easy cleanup.
You can also chop ice with the tri-blade knife and this is a feature I really use as it is faster (and requires less cleanup) than doing it in our old-style vertical blender.
* Versatile: You've got the all the traditional uses with the knife and then there are the two whisks (Secured into a separate mounter that is easily attached to the power unit.)
* Accessories: The tall pitcher makes it easy to blend/pour liquids (and we've also used it when whisking as well.) And I'm glad that it comes with a separate, extra large dual blade chopper unit as we are always looking for ways to avoid using our Cuisinart(heavy to drag out; a pain to clean as we don't have a dishwasher.)
Depending on content, using the tall blending pitcher allows for some quick smoothies. And again, fast cleanup.
Cons:
* Size/weight: The extra-long knife attachment paired with the heavy power unit could make it less comfortable to use for some folks. However, given the speed of the unit, and average home-cook use, I doubt you'd have to use it long enough to have your hand get really tired. But it may be a consideration for some, so I point it out.
* You need to be sure you're using a deep enough container when using the Turbo speed or you could have some splashing/mess. Also, you've got to hold the unit very firmly on Turbo or, again, a possible messy situation. In general, a firm grip is essential.
* Cost: It's high for average home-cook use given other options on market. But, if your needs are heavy-duty in terms of both frequency and types of things you cook, it could be a solid investment piece for your kitchen.
Why four, not five stars given all the pros? One basic consideration: Price. However, to repeat, if I were a professional chef or someone who prepared a lot more food (volume and frequency), this would be five-stars as this would be a good investment piece.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I have a large family and use an immersion blender almost daily.I to have gone through several hand blenders, the last, before this one is the Kitchen aid immersion blender that I bought here on Amazon last year. It was around $100.00 then, this one for $25.00 more has what I feel to be of an equal quality construction wise, it is solid but a little bit lighter (easier on the wrists) & has all the bells & whistles that did not come with the Kitchen aid like the beater attachments, ice crusher etc... One of the big differences even though both are stainless steel on the immersion part is that the Kitchen aid is more top heavy!! It has fallen over sooo many times & splattered stuff EVERYWHERE while setting it down for a second when adding ingredients to whatever concoction I was blending at the moment.
This Frigidare has a much more stable base on the end where the blades are located (it has 3 blades as opposed to the Kitchen aid's 2 blade system) and it has about 2" more on the neck so it can blend into deeper containers all the way to the bottom. I have read people say that it is good for small families as it has "wait" times when on turbo speed & others said it was good for small retail establishments like cupcake bakeries. I think this is good for ANYONE wanting a good quality versatile immersion blender. I like it much better than my Kitchenaid which I would put into the same quality/price range category as this one.
It does so much more and it is lighter, longer,and most important of all MORE STABLE!! No more flying food splatters, YAY Frigidare!
