Maxi-Matic ERH-08 Elite Cuisine Can Opener with Removable Cutter Assembly and Knife Sharpener, White

Maxi-Matic ERH-08 Elite Cuisine Can Opener with Removable Cutter Assembly and Knife Sharpener, WhiteThis Can Opener was cheap and I found it perfect for the price paid! It's no big deal but it works fine! I bought it on "PRIME' and I had it in just 20 hours! I wanted a really cheap one that I can use it only maybe once a month. This one has a "Knife Sharpener and Scissor Sharpener" too! I know that this one can't be like more expensive brands like "Black and Decker" or somebody else! Hey I lucked out! I also need a electric one because I have one arm and this opens with ease! Maxi-Matic ERH-08 Elite Cuisine Can Opener with Removable Cutter Assembly and Knife Sharpener, White

This is a great can opener/knife sharpener. It can open tall cans as well as small cans. The one added "bonus" for me (which is what sold me on this particular model) is the knife sharpener/scissors sharpener.

this can opener was very inexpensive and it is what it is. leaves large cuts on the can covers that are dangerous. its very last century and so is the price. it does what it is supposed to do. but its frustrating at times trying to get the can to catch. i do like the sharpeners in back of the opener. if you dont open lots of cans and i dont. this can opener is fine.

It opens cans just fine, but I wonder if any of the other reviewers tried to actually sharpen a knife with it? The knife sharpener doesn't work, it doesn't spin at all. I opened up the can opener to see if I could fix it and the stone is fixed on a plastic hex shaft that is part of the blow molded case. There's no way the stone was made to spin, I guess the Chinese figured we would just spit on our knives and run them over the stone by hand. There's a shaft coming out of the motor but it's too short the even touch the stone, it was never meant to spin. I guess I'm off to Wal-Mart to get an opener with a knife sharpener that really works, too much of a hassle to send this back for what I paid for it.

very disappointed in this product I have thrown the product away not even good enough to give to Goodwill. Doesn't have enough power to even open small cans. Amazon did give me a refund. Do not buy!!!

Calphalon Classic Bakeware 9-Inch Round Nonstick Springform Pan

Calphalon Classic Bakeware 9-Inch Round Nonstick Springform PanIt works great! The latch tarnished a little after cooking but other than that it works great.

I'm really happy with this pan, I've made several cheese cakes with it now and haven't had a problem. The latch has a very solid feel when opening or closing. Cleaning has been extremely easy so far, a quick soak in warm water and everything wipes right off.

Last Christmas, I had some last minute baking to do and purchased this pan along with Nordicware's 3-pc. Springform Pan Set (seemed like a good deal for 3 stackable pans). I used the calphalon 9" and also Nordicware's 9" to make a layer cake. Both pans worked well, but I preferred calphalon because of the weight. It seemed so solid and had a good feel to it. I've used it for cheesecakes and also a regular white cake for coconut cake turned out beautifully without sticking.

I was going to return the nordicware, but decided to could use the smaller pans for small cakes/cheesecakes.

USEFUL TIP:

To avoid rusting on any metallic cookware, I wash them by hand and pop them in a warm oven (200 degrees or so). This eliminates any possibility of rust forming in hard-to-reach corners. Do the same for cookie cutters, etc.

Chef's Choice 440 2-Stage Manual Sharpener

Chef's Choice 440 2-Stage Manual SharpenerI thought I was quite a knife expert, having practised using a two sided stone at a cooking store where I purchased the first of my fine chefs' knives. I would use the stone every month or so and then follow with periodic fine tuning with a steel. I have been following this routine for twenty years and I thought my knives were getting the best treatment. Well, that was until I found the manual 440 two stage. I believe that only a manual can sharpen and protect a knife because overheating is known to change the temper of high carbon steel. After I got married my wife had this 440 sitting in the cabinet and I gave it a try. Not having the instructions, I used the philosophy that less is more and only pulled a few strokes through the 1 side and a few through the 2. The results were amazing! This inexpensive device preserves the hollow ground and it is almost impossible to do damage to a quality knife with this sharpener. I immediately sent one to my mother and she is getting excellent results now too. Providing that the knife is quality to start with and has not been abused by cutting on hard surfaces or clanging against metal and plates in a dishwasher, you will experience a knife that is sharper than a barber's razor. Here is a case where easy and cheap beats all other options.

The set of knives we had received as a wedding gift had grown dull because I foolishly used them on a tempered glass cutting board. As the edges dulled, so did my interest in the art of food preparation. Eventually, I was reduced to mincing garlic and chopping onions in a food processor.

Then I began watching "Iron Chef" and its American cousin "Iron Chef America" on Food Network. The skill of those talented men and women lit a spark inside me. I longed to take that big chef's knife in hand once more and send its blade through a big juicy onion.

It was a tear-jerking experience because the knife was so dull, I could barely cut the onion in half and lop off the root and stem before its pungent aroma overpowered me. Dejected, I finished the task in the, you guessed it, food processor.

While shopping, I came across this sharpener. The explanation on the back of the package was a revelation. Seems concave hollow-ground edges are especially vulnerable to bending and blunting. The Chef's Choice solution: sharpen the edge into a slightly bulging V, then hone a more sharply angled bevel. The edge is now bolstered by the blade, not exposed to the dulling forces of hard surfaces. Made perfect sense to me.

I tossed the sharpener into my cart along with a brand new wood cutting board (yes, like the type they use on both "Iron Chef" and "Iron Chef America").

My big chef's knife needed 100 strokes in the sharpening channel. After 10 quick swipes through the honing channel, it plowed through a big brown onion (the strong kind) faster than I could shed a tear. Cloves of garlic fell apart like tiny sticks of butter.

Now that my knives have been resurrected, I give them a quick sharpening after I wash and dry them, and before I put them away. When the cooking muse stirs, I can get right to work without pausing to sharpen up.

At this price, it can't hurt to find out if all your knives need is a good sharpening.

I purchased a super-duper knife set form a t.v. shopping net

work that starts with a "Q". When they arrived they were so-so

sharp. In a coulpe of weeks I was sorry I bought them. Lucky

for me I kept my old set(Chicago Cutlery). I then discovered

this sharpner and WOW. It brought my old set back to a very

sharp edge and the "super-duper set back an edge that would

cut tomatoes with out squashing them. Lesson: Don't buy knives

that have composit blades and claim to be ever-sharp. Also

don't judge a sharpner by it price. This is a good sharpener.

I had previously bought a Presto electric sharpener, which is good for getting a reasonable edge, and for grinding out bad knicks. But the Presto left a rough edge. I used a microscope and the edge looked like jagged hills and valleys at high magnification. But with the Chef's Choice 440 the edge looks almost perfectly straight under the microscope, and the blade is literally shaving sharp. Make sure to follow the directions and use almost no pressure when sharpening. Great sharpener!!

Edgeware 50353 Angle Adjust Adjustable Electric Knife Sharpener

Edgeware 50353 Angle Adjust Adjustable Electric Knife SharpenerI have NOT tried this sharpener, review is based on the available YouTube vid from the company:

1. Because it sharpens both sides of the knife at the same time, you cannot raise a bur, which means you are kind of flying blind.

2. For the same reason, it cannot be used to sharpen single-edged Asian knives, because obviously you only have one side to sharpen, and this would ruin the knife.

Kuhn Rikon Corn Zipper, Stainless

Kuhn Rikon Corn Zipper, StainlessI recently purchased the corn zipper. Absolutely terrific gadget. Fast, fun to use, easy to use and a nice sturdy quality tool. I have other gadgets for removing corn from the cob but this one is by far the best.

I want to love this product but it's not perfect. However, it's still better than any other way I have found.

Very well made (as are all Kuhn-Rikon products) in hefty stainless, with very sharp blades. The blade is about two-kernels wide and strips two rows per stroke. Which is ok, but of course, the varying widths of a kernel guarantees you are slicing through kernels much of the time. Still, beats a knife which always slashes kernels open with every stroke.

Best feature: You can generally get it to remove the kernel without leaving much behind or snagging some cob. This is fairly easy to do but not without some struggle to keep it from hanging up mid-stroke.

Someday, someone will think of a way to strip kernels off cleanly and wholly. Until then, this is the best.

I bought this so I could put up a bushel of corn quickly. It worked. I read the other ratings for corn zipper and was a little apprehensive about getting it. I shouldn't have been. It worked beautifully.

I tried the corn zipper and think that an old fashioned knife still works better. With the Corn Zipper it only cuts one row of corn and a knife you are able to one whole side of the cob and can do it in half the time. Didn't work for me Sorry!!

Want Kuhn Rikon Corn Zipper, Stainless Discount?

The Corn Zipper works great really great the only negative is the small amount of corn it removes at one time. (1-2 rows) I will still use it because for some reason I make a lot less mess than when I use a knife. I'd be really excited if they'd make a wider one and I'm sure they will give 'em time.

Shun DM0715 Classic 2-1/2-Inch Bird's Beak Knife

Shun DM0715 Classic 2-1/2-Inch Bird's Beak KnifeI have a lot of experience using various brands of kitchen cutlery, including some from relatively obscure Japanese manufacturers, and I truly believe that this is the best bird's beak knife on the market. The most important thing in selecting a bird's beak knife is sharpness, and Shun knives are certainly among the very sharpest on the market today. The only comparable knife that I have used is the Global bird's beak knife, but this one has a much more comfortable handle than the Global does. Additionally, the Shun bird's beak knife is balanced better than the Global, and significantly sharper than similar knives from Wusthof and Henckels. There is also a Shun Stainless bird's beak knife, with the only difference being the stainless steel handle. Although not every kitchen absolutely needs a bird's beak knife, I highly recommend this one for those that do want one for peeling tough vegetables such as turnips and for specialized decorative garnishing.

the bottom of the blade is to pointy near the bolster & you can cut your self real easy .

I like all my other knives very much . They hold an edge for a very long time.

I only buy Shun now .

Great for radishes and small items where the accuracy and control of the reverse curve blade are required. Also dynamite for removing the lead seal on wine bottles. "Sharp as a Shun" should be part of the vernacular. I love this bird's beak and use it more than I had imagined I would.

The bird's beak knife is often overlooked. I've never seen one included in a knife block set. Yet it has great utility and some unique properties. It's great for taking the stem portion out of tomatoes, strawberries, etc. It's also great for cutting perfect supremes from citrus. It certainly won't replace a good paring knife for all tasks, but it's a great addition to the kitchen and I use mine often.

Want Shun DM0715 Classic 2-1/2-Inch Bird's Beak Knife Discount?

This is as close to perfection as I have seen in a bird's-beak knife in more than three decades of professional and home cooking. It is wickedly sharp right out of the box. I mean sharp as a razor. If your knife skills are limited, be careful. The shape of the handle is Shun's idea of perfection and I must admit it works well, especially for a right-hander. The handle is longer than most, an advantage for both balance and control.

Maintaining the edge of a curved blade like this takes a bit of skill. If you aren't entirely sure of yourself, ask a more experienced friend to show you how to do so. It would be a tragedy to damage the fine edge of this little work of art.

The downside? Like all Shun knives, it is insanely expensive. Still, you get what you pay for so go for it.

Core Bamboo 1007 Classic Bamboo Pin Stripe Cutting Board, Small

Core Bamboo 1007 Classic Bamboo Pin Stripe Cutting Board, SmallI have a 3 piece set of these, sm, med and large that I bought else where because they were a good price. It was great to have the variety of sizes and they were light weight which I enjoyed. These cutting boards are quite thin compared to the other bamboo cutting boards I have as they are only about 1/3 of the thickness. But be careful because they weaken at the seams where the wood color changes. After wiping them off with a damp cloth followed up with drying them with a dry towel I have to lay them flat until they are completely dry becasue they are so thin they easily warp when places standing up leaning against the wall. In about a month I've had 2 come apart at the seams where they color changes, one I only used a few times to cut lemons on it, split in as I was cutting a lemon. The one I have left is warped from being stood up on it's side. Maybe if I had a space where I could always lay them flat to store them between uses warping wouldn't be an issue. But once again, my other bamboo cutting boards do not warp from being leaned up against the wall.

BergHOFF Gourmet Line Santoku Knife, Black/Silver, 7'As soon as I received this item, I started using it to cut Steak, Potatoes, Carrots and other veggies. I was amazed how little effort was required to slice these. The cuts were so precise that the cut portions stuck to the knife blade, so one has to develop a technique which slighly pushes the cut portion away as the knife descends through the meat or whatever you are cutting. Just be very very careful since this knife has a surgical-quality blade and you want to keep your fingers intact ;-)

A few quick 22 degree passes on this baby and my knives cut tomatoes like butter. I am very pleased with this sharpener. It takes some getting used to. It is wider than a normal steel and because of the diamond surface, the knife drags a little when sharpening. However, it takes fewer passes than a traditional steel to get the same edge. I've been using them for several months now and I couldn't ask for a nicer, more well balanced, superior knife. They sharpen nicely and keep their edges for a very long time. Yes, they are expensive, but I will have these for the rest of my life. I am very pleased with this purchase.

1905 was an eventful year: Albert Einstein published his quantum and relativity theory. In the same year Robert Koch was awarded the Nobel prize for discovering the medicine for treatment of tuberculosis. Seen as a miracle of technology was the largest German passenger ship "Kaiserin Auguste Viktoria" and this was duly celebrated. Celebrations also took place in Norway, namely the independence from Sweden. In Russia "Petersburg Bloody Sunday: and the mutiny on the armoured cruiser "Potemkin" heralded the Russian revolution, which left its sustainable mark on the world. HHI Ceramic Blade Folding Knife

HHI Ceramic Blade Folding KnifeI was intrigued by a knife with a ceramic blade. this was the least expensive one i could find to try i got it very light blade a tad short but enough to evaluate it. fools you into thinking it is regular plastic so i took a razor blade and tried to scratch it but i could not then a tool steel end mill cutter would not touch it i only had for a week before i dropped my cordless drill on it and broke blade it is brittle but till then worked great on things i cut like plastic packing most everything comes in that is almost impossible to open this cut it easy also used as letter and package opener worked great on them too also fruit and meat no problem. Now to buy another one with longer blade now that i know Ceramic blades work within reason.

I've been look at getting a ceramic knife for carrying, I have a couple ceramic kitchen knife. I love them. However, my experience with them and this knife show me that ceramic has its applications. For my needs ceramics are just too brittle. I guess I'll have to stick with steel. It has a fair edge. It will lift a few hairs, but not quite shave. It doesn't have any kind of lock or point to the blade. I gave it four stars, because it works great for its intended purpose. That purpose just doesn't serve me.

Buy HHI Ceramic Blade Folding Knife Now

It is sharp, it folds, it does what it says it will do. I wanted it for crafts, using it with a cutting board, but because of the way the handle and the blade are set up it is slightly awkward to get the blade flat against the board. The 'point' on the handle next to the blade and the blade being aligned with the top of the handle rather than the bottom prevents getting the full edge of the blade on the board. I have to work at the edge of a table so that the handle can go over the edge of the table making the blade flat against the board.

Zhen Japanese Damascus 6.5" Light Cleaver Chopping Knife set

Zhen Japanese Damascus 6.5' Light Cleaver Chopping Knife setWe have been using cheap cleavers for awhile and now want to upgrade to a higher end one. After some research, we picked this one since it's priced similar to high-end German knives but with better Damascus steel imported from Japan. Plus, we like to support our folks since we are Chinese and this is made in Taiwan. This is also my first Amazon review.

I don't have a Shun cleaver but do have two paring knives made by Shun. Putting this cleaver on the side of the Shun, you can see the devil is in the details.

You can immediately notice: the Shun knives have flawless finishes throughout, the surface has higher gloss with even dragon pattern. The Zhen has less shine, the alternating pattern is also nice but appears not as evenly distributed.

The craftsmanship: as another reviewer of the Zhen 8" cleaver pointed out, the attachment of the handle to the rear of the bolster is not as smooth. There is even maybe a tiny gap on the bottom side. There are multiple noticeable scratches on the blade, especially on the surface between the blade and bolster transition tiny scratch pattern makes you feel this part was not well polished. There is a rather deep scratch about 5 mm long on the edge of the end cap of the handle. Also, I noted the burrs a few strokes on a steel easily took care of it; however, I should not have to do this with a new knife, especially one with a price tag considered expensive for most people.

One thing I don't understand, this one claims to have 67 layers, but Shun claims only 16 layers on each side. I counted the coarse lines on the blade: both have 15 lines. So I assume they have same number of layers.

Again, none of the above affects the usability of the knife. It's light, thin and razor sharp, perfect for Asians with smaller hands. With the material used, I expect it to perform much better than the cheaper cleavers we have been using. However, at this price, the company really should pay more attention to the details to be able to put this side by side with the higher-end German and Japanese made knives (think about someone wants to give this as a wedding gift, appearance will be as important as function). The minors flaws mentioned above are easily avoidable but definitely hurt the presentation of the product, I don't even see these problems in my cheap JCPenny Cooks cleaver made in China. Hence the subtraction of one star.

Not much to say about the carving knife. It also has burrs on the edge needed a couple of strokes on a sharpening steel. For $10 extra, I picked this set instead of the cleaver alone to get a small, sharp knife made of VG-10 core: seems to be good deal.

Victorinox Cutlery 3.24-Inch Wavy Paring Knife, Black Polypropylene Handle

Victorinox Cutlery 3.24-Inch Wavy Paring Knife, Black Polypropylene HandleIn the past, these were great knives: inexpensive, comfortable to hold, and long-lasting. However, the handles have been redesigned at least twice and have become much less substantial and comfortable (shorter and more concave) with each revision. They are, however, as sharp as before, arriving sharp and staying sharp.

We have never been the type to get those really nice knife block sets. Most of our knives were wedding presents that came free when you ordered from a mail-order meat company. However, we felt we needed a nice paring knife. So we did our research and thsi one was VERY affordable and got great reviews. It made a HUGE difference in food prep. Suddenly we can quickly slice all our fresh fruits and vegetables quickly and easily. I even did the sheet of paper test (you try to cut a sheet of paper with the knife) and it worked. Only issue is I was so used to using dull knives that I accidentally knicked my finger once. This knife is great. If you are like us and build your knife collection one knife at a time, this is the one you need for paring. Highly recommended.

Victorinox paring knives are SO much better than the "expensive guys". not only due to the cost, but also because they keep an edge. Wusthof Create-A-Set Knife Storage Block

Wusthof Create-A-Set Knife Storage BlockBlock is well made, heavy and nice looking. I do not know much about the wood, but the wood is hard, and you can not scratch it with your nail. It well matchs my wusthof classic knives.

scissor's model number is 5558. The steel is 9 inch long, and heavy and well made. Though it does not carry model number, it does feels like something belong to Wusthof grand pix line.

The block can handle 12 inch long knife.

The width of uppper slot is 2.5 inch. If you have a cleaver, there is no place to put it.

In short, this is a great starting set to hold wusthof knives.

Finding the perfect knife set is nearly impossible. Most sets include a lot of extras that you probably didn't want. Most of us need the basics (big chopping knife, smaller knife and paring knife) plus a few. Buying this block and outfitting it yourself is the much more economical way to purchase a knife set. Especially when you are talking about somewhat pricey knives like Wusthof. This block is perfect. There are plenty of large and small slots and slots for steak knives. It easily fits my 8" cooks' knife. The block is a little bit bigger than I anticipated. It's a little 'longer' than I thought it would be. But it's beautiful and really doesn't take up much counter space. It's solid and hefty, doesn't move around when taking knives in and out. I love that it came with the sharpening steel and scissors. I would have gladly bought the block itself for the price I paid. This is a great product for anyone looking to put together their own knife set. Highly recommended.

CulinHome Melrose Collection 8-Inch Chef's Knife

CulinHome Melrose Collection 8-Inch Chef's KnifeI like this knife, but it only stayed sharp for maybe a few weeks of constant use and then had to be sharpened. other then that, nice and heavy, sleek look, great grip, but you will need to invest in a knife sharpener.

The rest of my knife set is cheap junk, but I couldn't stand for the primary Chef's knife, which accounts for about 85% of my kitchen knife usage, to be so junky. I replaced my set's knife with the CulinHome Melrose Collection 8-Inch Chef's Knife, and couldn't be happier.

I've gotta say this item is severely underrated, and perhaps that's because at its current price point it is targeted towards those who want a cheapy knife that they can toss into the dishwasher. No good knife is going to be completely dishwasher safe. This knife is somewhat in-between, meaning you can let it sit with water on it for several minutes without worry, but still needs care and really shouldn't be tossed in a dishwasher (although it is pretty cheap, so you decide if the convenience is worth it).

The knife easily, and most importantly, cleanly cuts through most objects thrown at it. My previous knife had a terrible habit of not cutting through bell pepper completely, meaning just a tiny bit of skin would be attached, which meant when dicing I would have to go back and manually pull pieces apart. This goes through bell peppers with ease, but that's not really too hard a task. Carrots, squash, zucchini, it cuts cleanly and easily. The only thing I can think of that even gave resistance was a whole raw potato, but it still went through pretty easy and cleanly, just felt like it was cutting through a sticky substance. It cuts neatly through meat and poultry.

The knife also does not hold an edge very well, but it does in fact sharpen very well provided you have the right tool; I recommend the AccuSharp 001 Knife Sharpener.

The solid body is a pro and a con. The pro is the easy clean; with how sloppy I am preparing raw chicken, I couldn't imagine having a wood handle again. There's also not really any area for the knife to "break" at; if anything, the tip would chip off, but I couldn't imagine a way for the handle to break. The largest con happens to be it can be slippery. I've never had it slip, and at least it is ergonomically designed so you can grip it, but I could see if you didn't have a strong firm grip and your hand was wet, this could easily slip.

Not getting too specific or scientific with exact measurements, I can say that this performs at a class above its price point, but not at a professional level. Because of this, I can say the knife is a great addition to amateur and home chefs, as it makes cooking far easier and more enjoyable, so long as you don't run it in the dishwasher, remember to clean and wipe off after use, and purchase a good knife sharpener.

I am not a chef. I am a regular Mom who cooks for her family. I love this knife. It's beautiful and has a good weight, not too heavy. The packaging says it's "made from surgical grade stainless steel..." It's "smooth and seamless design with no joints and gaps will prevent bacteria growth." I recommend it.

Update: I took off one star because it's acquired some rust stains. I wash it usually in the dish washer.

I like the aesthetics of the knife, it has a wickedly sharp edge, and it's comfortable to use. However, the balance is off, for me too blade-heavy to become my everyday knife. Still a nice value, and I definitely do use it often, if not all the time.

Victorinox 6-Inch Straight Boning Knife, Rosewood Handle

Victorinox 6-Inch Straight Boning Knife, Rosewood HandleGreat boning knife, I bought it after reading one of Alton Brown's books where he recommended it. High quality tool, razor sharp edge that cuts chicken with ease, and the price can't be beat. I'm a big fan of fully forged cutlery but for a boning knie all that extra heft is not only unnecessary it's cumbersome. If you need a boning knife this is the way to go.
