KitchenAid 12-Piece Forged Block Knife Set, Candy Apple Red

KitchenAid 12-Piece Forged Block Knife Set, Candy Apple RedCandy apple red is right! These knives caught my eye because of the awesome color of the handles and of course I had to have them. I'm thinking "they're knives... they have a handle and a stainless steel blade, what else do I need in a knife?" Clearly I'm no 4-star chef and my previous set of knives was a cheap Farberware set of serrated knives that I had owned for twenty years. I wish this set had a 7" Santoku instead of the included 4" version but no big deal, I purchased the 7" separately.

Well, they are knives and they cut, chop, slice and are quite useable. But then I washed them and placed in my dish drainer to dry and found rust spots on the blades. WTF?! These aren't made of iron, they are forged stainless steel... even my cheap Farberware knives NEVER developed any rust and I treat 'em pretty rough, leaving them wet all the time as I toss them into the sink and what not. I'm very disappointed about this as I've never seen any of my cutlery or flatware rust.

In summary these knives look great and certainly do the job but I panic if I forget to wash and dry these knives immediately after use.

These knives are a great set and good value. Knives are very sharp and very well built. We get lots of use out of them and they never disappoint,

Starfrit Salad Spinner, Blue

Starfrit Salad Spinner, BlueI've been walking into Bed, Bath, and Beyond for several years now looking for a decent salad spinner. Last Christmas I bought myself an OXO but returned it after 1 day since the the gears stripped with a minimum of force and the entire unit was difficult to keep steady. Then last week I started looking around online to see where the state of salad spinner technology was and after perusing many reviews I decided to give this Starfrit item a whirl. What a good move that was! This thing is SWEET. Some people might be turned off by the side handle because it might make it difficult to store the unit. But as far as I'm concerned this is the luxury of the item. With the side handle, the gear mechanism is more sturdy and considerable force can be applied to get the spinner really humming. Also, with the top of the unit clear, one can place a hand on top to stabilize the unit while turning the handle. Also, there are some little details like removable liner on the spinner, which can be cleaned separately. Also, the ribbed interior of the basket to keep salad leaves in place. And did I mention the 4 thick rubber feet? Finally, this light blue thing looks cool as all get out like something out of 2001: A Space Odyssey! Open the pod bay doors, Hal, and get me a Caesar Salad....I love this product and advise everyone to immediately bypass the OXO hype and get with the Starfrit revolution! (OK, am I overstating my enthusiasm a bit here? seriously though, this is an awesome salad spinner.)

Love this salad spinner. I wasn't sure which one to buy so I went thru all the reviews. This brand had great reviews from everyone. I was not disappointed. It's very solid, and the handle makes it spin well. It doesn't feel like it's going to break on you. It also doesn't slip all over while trying to turn the handle... of course I keep one hand on it and it is just so steady. I have used salad spinners in the past and quit using them because they didn't work well. Well I put my lettuce in this one after washing it and shaking out the excess water.Gave it a few spins and was surprised at how much water came out and how dry my lettuce was for chopping. If you're considering purchasing a salad spinner... this is a great one. I love mine!

I reviewed a lot of spinners before choosing this one, and I'm very glad I bought it. It is quite large, well designed, very sturdy, and does a great job. We've had it for many months, no problems. I like that you can crank the handle just a few turns, and it keeps on spinning on its own for as long as you want, to get your produce very dry--no need to pump and pump. The brake works very well. The lid never seems to get wet either, which makes for easier cleaning. We like to do leaf lettuce in whole leaves, then store them ready for use in an air-tight container. The lettuce seems to last longer, and is certainly convenient for salads and sandwiches. This is a bit too large for de-hulling sprouts.

In the past, I have had the OXO and the Kitchen Aid salad spinners. Both of these were difficult to spin, especially with large amounts and broke within a relatively short period of time. This one, with the crank, is easy to use and gets my lettuce much drier than the others. I am happy with my purchase.

Want Starfrit Salad Spinner, Blue Discount?

I must say I'm underwhelmed on first spin with this product. Several review descriptions just seem "off". This is NOT any jumbo capacity spinner, if anything it's a tad less than OXO's and other typical spinners of that ilk. It's taller but narrower. The minimal instructions don't tell you how to attach the handle, just shove it on. Not sure from that if there's a better connection than just randomly pushing it in but the most annoying thing about it is it has a clicking, "skipping" feel to the spinner when you rotate the handle, as though the cogs had already stripped a few teeth. This is apparently the action that was designed into the spin system(they're very few teeth on the spin top) so to me it feels defective right out of the box. It literally sounds like popcorn popping there's so much plastic "gear stripping". You dont get the feel that it can spin as fast or with as much torque as other common spinners. Can't imagine it'll hold up too well with the flimsiness of the handle/gear cog mechanism, but will definitely report back on its performance after a month or two. My initial impulse was to return it but seems like a hassle for a bulky $25 purchase. 10 days later-gave up and returned it. I would guess it never exceeded 60 rpm(with a clattering/ratchedy noise)and left salad dripping wet. Thank you Amazon for good return service.

Chicago Cutlery Walnut Tradition 10-Inch Sharpening Steel

Chicago Cutlery Walnut Tradition 10-Inch Sharpening SteelI was a bit skeptical when placing the order since the price was quite low, and I was not sure if it's going to suffer from quality issues or if it's going to do the job.

However, the product arrived and appeared to be well made (I'm a bit obsessive about trivial details, and I do prefer walnut over plastic), and it sharpened my generic kitchen knife (no fancy japanese hardened steel knives here) with just a few swipes. It is also quite long enough for my knives without being too long and unwieldy. For my knife it appeared to take off some metal as some fine shards did show, and after longer use there was a thin coat of grey powder in its grooves (that can be cleaned off easily).

The walnut handle/guard has a reasonably good grip. It seems to do the job quick and well without making a fuss. It is also fairly hefty and feels right with the sharpening motion. It is a no-nonsense tool that has a very reasonable price. I'm very happy with it.

This is a grooved, rather than a straight steel. This means it is taking significant portions of metal off your edge with each pass (that's the job of a sharpening tool, not a honing tool!). The grooves risk significant damage to your blade. The grooving is sort of apparent from the photo, but it should be made more explicit. Consider yourself forewarned!

Does the job as advertised. The wood handle could be a bit longer. As it is, suits smaller hands well. Sharpens fine knives easily. The grind on the steel seems just right.

Great Product. Does a goo job sharpening straight (not serrated knives). Easy to use.

I've had my CC steel for some 15 years now; it does a very nice job of keeping a sharp edge on my knives I use it before every time I cut tomatoes, and about weekly otherwise. Main knife at this point is a Pure Komachi vegetable knife the two work fantastically well together. Now, this steel DOES take some metal off but I am just plain happy not to have to break out a stone to maintain edges..!

Orka Black Stainless Steel V-Blade Mandoline

Orka Black Stainless Steel V-Blade MandolineI use this on a regular basis for slicing potatoes, onions, cucumbers and zucchini. I admit I never tried it for carrots but they can be pretty tough. Also it has a lot of fancy features I haven't tried. It comes with a very sharp V-blade so be sure to use food holder once item being sliced gets short enough. Another nice feature is rubber footed foldout leg in back can be used on a cutting board or over a bowl. I thought overall quality was very good for the money.

I had a cheap little plastic mandoline that worked like a gem ... but was falling apart and wasn't very safe to use. I've searched for years for a new one. I've taken many back after purchasing because they simply didn't work for the amount of money I paid. I tried cheap ones, expensive ones, stainless steel ones, plastic ones, fancy ones, plain ones.... Mostly they didn't cut well, or were too hard to change blades ... but the biggest problem was the hand-held unit was (for my hands) too big to hold and push down at the same time. I stumbled on this mandoline at a thrift store and the price was too good to not give it a try. It WORKS! I absolutely love this mandoline and hope to have it for the rest of my life. If I have to purchase a new one it's incredibly inexpensive! I don't know about the problems others have had, but this thing cuts beautifully, is easy to hold. I love the rubber grips that keep it from sliding and that it fits over bowls without moving around. It's easy to clean. I just can't think of anything I don't like. For this price ... if you've been looking for one ... try this before spending $50-$100 for something else!

Buy Orka Black Stainless Steel V-Blade Mandoline Now

I bought this for my wife because of the amount of chopping she does, and the hassle of pulling out the food processor. My wife has never used a mandoline before, and while it was different at first she now uses the mandoline fairly regularly julienne style. I attribute the use not only to the good job the product does, but the fact she can store it next to the cutting board so she is inclined to pull it out when about to chop/slice.

These blades are super sharp, and the quality is nice. I was worried about the price, but I think I got a decent product for what I paid. The attachments clip in and out fairly easy, but are not loose and do not come out during operation. My wife took the time to read the manual or watch videos to understand how to use it.

We have found that not all fruits or veggies slice well, but it is a matter of getting a feel for the item and putting it through the unit appropriately. Our food may be in different shapes now compared to when it was conventionally cut, but it does a good job.

The food holder doesn't seem to hold all food well and is somewhat clunky (partly by design to protect your hand). I would like to see some improvements with how it holds food if possible.

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin Collection Hard Cheese Knife with Bamboo Cutting Board

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin Collection Hard Cheese Knife with Bamboo Cutting BoardThis is a nice, plain and simple cheese board. The only thing keeping me from giving it the last star is the lack of a keeper on the knife so it stays with the board in the cabinet.

I bought this set without checking the size. I had expected a larger board, which can also be used for vegi and meat. Although it's now sitting at the bottom of my gargets drawer, it's still in very good quality. The knife and the board are made in solid form. Would recommend it to anyone who do want to use it for cheese or small pieces of food only.

Cambridge Silversmiths Ozona 50-Piece Flatware Set, 18/10 Stainless Steel

Cambridge Silversmiths Ozona 50-Piece Flatware Set, 18/10 Stainless SteelWhen we got married in 2002, we had a lovely set of silverware from Crate & Barrel, called Oona. It's about $40 a setting. I love it but it's too expensive for us. I found this set, and it looked pretty close to the Oona setting so I took a chance. It arrived yesterday, and it is *exactly* like Oona, except not quite as heavy as Oona. It's clean and modern and perfect. Love it!

Edlund Commercial Can Opener #1 With Plated Base

Edlund Commercial Can Opener #1 With Plated Base[Update: after using it more than two years, it's still going strong. We've not had to sharpen or replace the blade. All I've done to maintain it is add a little oil a couple of times a year to keep it turning easy. Wipe it down after you use it (especially if can contents slosh out), and it will stay in great shape for years.]

Well, if you're reading this review after browsing to the Edlund #1 Commercial Can Opener (with base), then I'll assume you fall into one of three categories: you're involved in food service somewhere (e.g., restaurant, soup kitchen), you have a large family that uses a lot of institutional sized (10#) cans, or you are wondering if something like this might work for someone with arthritis. I find myself in the latter two categories.

This opener brought to an end our practice of buying and wearing out traditional, hand-held can openers. We're a big family and open a lot of institutional sized cans. I have no complaints. This opener can handle them all--even little tuna cans. Since we're not a restaurant, our biggest issue was deciding where to mount the base plate. We opted for a corner of one of our countertops in the area with the least foot traffic. Mounting the base plate required drilling holes through the countertop, then installing machine screws and nuts (provided). If we want the extra counter space (e.g., when hosting), the opener can be removed from the bracked and stored in a drawer or cabinet.

Turning the crank sure beats trying to turn those little handles on the hand-held openers we've used all these years. My wife has recently been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in her fingers (sadly so, because she is so young), so this is a real hand-saver for her.

All around a pretty good opener. I found you must drop the blade down pretty hard for it to work properly but that is not really any big deal. It would not turn the can unless the blade is seated all the way down into a can. I would recommend this because I had several cheaper openers before this one and they were all a waste of money. This one seems well made and looks like it should last. I would buy it again, if I needed a second opener.

Our church ordered an Edlund Commercial Can Opener #1 with plated base. It arrived promptly and has been installed in our church kitchen. It is the best and most durable can opener we have used. This is what we were looking for after one of our volunteers was injured on a large can lid while using one of those hand held openers. His trip to the emergency room cost $thousands. This Edlund opener will prevent a reoccurrence.

since I run a catering company on the side I open many cans and have never found a can opener that is this easy to use and durable. Opening 30 cans used to be a hassel not with this can opener. It is built to last have had it for about 10 months opened somewhere north of 300 cans and still works as good as when I first bought it. I relize it is more money than most but you will not be unhappy with it when you got it.

This knife has never failed yet. It gets dull over time, but, it doesn't happen for awhile. I recommend not to slice meat with this knife as it isn't design for it and will wear out quicker.

I use it for slicing my vegetables and just that only. The blade is so sharp and I like the way the handle feels in your hand. Surgical steel, straight edge blade, and keep in mind buy this once and if anything happens to the knife. Do contact their customer service and they'll set you up to send in your knife to get a replacement if it does break on you for any reason.

My whole family loves this knife and will be passed on from generation to generation.

I really liked this knife . . . until the steel blade cracked inside the handle. This is the first time such a thing has happened to me with ANY knife. I would think such a high-priced knife would be better manufactured.

Cuisipro 4-Piece Stainless Steel Oval Measuring Cup Set

Cuisipro 4-Piece Stainless Steel Oval Measuring Cup SetI bought these to replace some old tin cups. They are great. The oval shape makes it easier to get it into a jar. And they are nice and heavy duty.

The clean up nicely and make cooking more pleasant!

I love OXO products but was greatly disappointed by their metal measuring cup set. I saw these at a local store and fell in love with them. They are oval so they fit better into containers with narrow lids and they are super sturdy handles that don't bend with normal use. Yes they are more expensive than other measuring cups out there but they are worth the extra money.

Buy Cuisipro 4-Piece Stainless Steel Oval Measuring Cup Set Now

This is the 1st time I've owned stainless steel measuring cups, and actually bought them because I saw somwhere that these were nice because of the oval shape. Yes, the shape is nice, but that's just the 1st of the nice things about these cups.

I love the thick metal -just feels like they'll last forever, and I like that about things I buy. They're also easy to clean up, as food/stuff just slips out when wiped more easily than with plastic and glass cups. One feature that I really love is that the cups fit nicely into each other and will sit nicely on the counter as a little unit, even with the attaching ring connected to them.

And addressing the shape, I must say that it is handy when dipping them into bags, cannisters, and even jars. I also like that when pouring from the cups, the ingredients don't flop into the bowl, with or without other ingredients, in a big heap, but spread out because of the "ovalness" of the cup -I noticed that this greatly lessens that icky "dust storm" when using flours.

I hope I won't have to buy measuring cups again with this set. I've gone through so many in the past that have either melted on the stovetop, gotten cup or chipped, or have broken. I expect to pass these down to my daughter!

Bought for my parents who had plastic cups w/ worn-out labels. I loved my set of stainless cups, but couldn't find those exact ones, so I sprung for these. Birchware Compostable Assorted Utensils (160mm) 24pcs.

Birchware Compostable Assorted Utensils 24pcs.I have to admit that I was very positively surprised to find that Birchware utensils are sturdy enough to compete with plastic utensils.

I ordered an assorted package to distribute samples to our local music festival organizers with whom my committee is working on implementing a zero waste initiative since last year (2012). Since we are collecting food waste we were looking for utensils that were compostable. I'm happy to report that the utensils past our scrutiny and that of the festival directors and they will now order a big number to provide them to the vendors at the festival a good faith effort in order to convince the vendors that this is the way to go in the future.

Unlike an earlier reviewer, we could not find any wood splinters on any of the utensil. They are smooth, do not taste of wood (unless you use it as a lolly-pop?). By comparison, Birchware utensils were actually sturdier and smoother than Aspenware. i suggest you order both to make up your mind.

For now I will give it 4-stars since I wish the fork prongs were a little longer )but this could perhaps compromise the sturdiness of it?).

I will update my review later in July 2013 when we had the opportunity to ask the audience for feedback!

Don't hesitate you will love this alternative to plastic!

I have been researching different compostable utensils for my new restaurant that is operating with "zero waste". I found the Birchware to be very functional for a wood utensil. The wood texture is definitely different than plastic, but not a bad different, just different. The fork worked fine for salads, potatoes and meat. Although carrots were hard to stab, which is pretty much true for any non-metal utensil. I found the knife to be very useful. We cut into a fairly tough skinned bratwurst and the serrated edge cut right through. It cut through a steak and baked potato just fine. I isn't a steak knife, so it wasn't a clean line, but it did the job plastic or cornware would do and it only takes 60 days to compost in a home composting system. I'm sold and will be using it in my restaurant.

Picnic Time Excursion Deluxe Cooler on Wheels with Picnic Service for 4

Picnic Time Excursion Deluxe Cooler on Wheels with Picnic Service for 4We use this not only for the beach, we take it when we go to concets at the Hollywood Bowl. It is a little bulky, but I take the plates and silverware out and use paper when it is just the 2 of us. A bonus is we use the detachable "cooler" to keep champagne cold when we are are going anywhere from beach to friend's houses for backyard BBQ.

This cooler is enormous with lots of different pockets and nooks. It is attractive and sturdy as well. The roller is quite heavy duty, even with the cooler completely filled. I also really like that you can dismantle it and just use one of the two coolers as a bag without the roller.

Two things that you should be aware of:

1. Only the main cooler pouch is waterproof so you cannot put unbagged ice cubes in the side coolers or botton square cooler. They leak the melted water out. You'd have to use those frozen packs instead.

2. This thing is around 2 tons when full. On wheels it is great. But carrying it full is almost impossible. Don't plan to fill it up and it works great as a bag cooler.

Oenophilia Barracuda Corkscrew

Oenophilia Barracuda CorkscrewSome might call me a seasoned professional when it comes to opening wine bottles. Not for a job, more of a hobby. I went through countless wine bottle openers including the rabbit, old school with the arms, and the powered ones that charge up. All that said, the screw on the rabbit breaks over time and the powered ones stop charging / working over time. This one works. Period. It does not require batteries, it does not break, it works. I'm not sure what the other review was referring to when they were talking about getting wounds from this.. All you need is a little forearm strength and the desire to partake in some vino. It's less than $10 and I've had it now for 3 yrs.

I'm not sure what product the previous reviewer is talking about, but the one I have is nothing like what he describes. Mine doesn't have any mysterious protrusions or sharp bits of metal anywhere. I think it's an excellent little corkscrew with a good feel and a nice design.

Buy Oenophilia Barracuda Corkscrew Now

I purchased this corkscrew at a specialty wine shop.

It looks real fancy even though it's made in China.

How it is supposed to work is it has a folding out edge that rests against the lip of the top of the bottle's neck after inserting the screw into the cork. This is a point of leverage with which you are to use it as a crowbar to remove the cork. The edge has two minute points of contact against the glass, so there is tremendous force against the bottle's lip. You will hear the glass start to fragment as you leverage the handle, and if you continue, you can end up breaking the bottle, severing your arteries, and getting a trip to the hospital assuming you survive at all. It is fundamentally flawed and dangerous in its design and should be withdrawn from sale immediately before people die.

Alternatively you can attempt to use it without the lever as a conventional corkscrew, wrap your hand around it, and pull. In this mode, you will discover that hidden beneath the folding lever in the above photo there is a sharp metal edge that will cut into your skin, causing excruciating pain.

Avoid this product at all costs.

Farberware Coriander Mirror 90-Piece Flatware Set, Service for 12 + 6-Piece Hostess SetBottom line I returned this set once I tried one of the spoons. The table spoons are quite large so you'll experience the biting edge of the bare metal on the sides of your mouth. Wow feels like there was no sanding, smoothing of edges at all. Fresh sharp edge from the stamping process is going to make you learn your lesson on cheap silverware. Looked OK, just cannot have my guests in pain when I want them to enjoy themselves. I purchased another set on Amazon, was quite pleased. Amazon charged me 11 bucks to return this set but I think it was worth it.

I wanted some new flatware to replace the old tired stuff I was given when I got married 25 years ago. I didn't want anything strange or flashy so this set fit the bill. I also didn't want to spend a lot and this set was a good price.

Bought this knife and it's more than I expected for the price. Weight, balance and grip are very good and the edge is still sharp after a couple of months use. Excellent value.

I was looking for a sharp basic knife. This knife was rated high for the price. So far I love this knife. Does a great job on onions, tomatoes, veggies, etc. My only negative is that it is made in China.

Victorinox Cutlery PerformanceShield Cut Resistant Glove, Extra Large

Victorinox Cutlery PerformanceShield Cut Resistant Glove, Extra LargeThis glove does not fit the normal XL hand. The fingers are extra long and skinny. So when you put it on, there is extra materials flapping at the end of every fingure.

I like my mandoline. I do not like the little food holder that came with it.

First thing I did when I got it was trash it, and then buy a pair of these gloves. (Which were actually a replacement pair.)

Most importantly, they do protect your fingers when mandolining. And they withstand errant knife movements. I still have 100% of each of my fingers.

But whoever sizes these things needs to rethink their categories. Particularly with regard to the fingers. The bulk of the glove fits fine, but the fingers are too long and too tight. Does no-one other than me have big fingers? Or are we expected to have sliced bits off the side of our fingers before realizing we should be using these gloves? And once they're on, the ends of the fingers flap about, getting caught on the mandoline blade. (The fingers are about quarter of an inch too long.)

This is the second pair of cut-resistant gloves I've owned, and the second pair that didn't fit as well as they should have, so it's a problem endemic to CR gloves, not this brand in particular. But they're functional, and isn't that what matters most?
