Messermeister 8" Chef's Edge-Guard

Messermeister 8' Chef's Edge-GuardI bought this with a set of Messermeister knives. I am a lead line cook and I use my knives and guards all day long for kitchen saftey. In time the guard starts to loosen up, I even had the guards slip off to the point where I had to use tape to secure my knife. In my opinion, get guards that have un/lock clips.

I've been using these for years and am very happy with these. They cover the knife blade very closely which keeps out dust nicely. They are very durable and I can't imagine them breaking anytime soon. Just make sure your knife is completely dry before covering. You should get years and years of use out of these.

Actually I am surprised with the quality and durability of this chef's knife guard. Notice that this guard is not closed from all directions but allows the top part (not the blade) of the knife to go a bit outside if required. It is a light magnetic feeling so it grips the knife very well. Protection is 100%. Great.

The only place for my Joyce Chen cleaver is in a drawer. I recently lost the guard I was using. A quick search of Amazon turned up this one. It fits perfectly and is sufficiently tight to hold it on the blade in the drawer. Just what I needed.

This cover is NOT 2" wide. It will not fit a blade more that 1 3/4" wide. Even the outside width is only 1 7/8". Worthless for my needs.

BergHOFF Cook & Co Cutlery Set, 4-Piece

BergHOFF Cook & Co Cutlery Set, 4-PieceFor $20, you can't go wrong. When I first got this set, I was curious as how sharp it would be. All of the blades will shave the hair off of my arm. I was scared of them (don't want to loose a finger making dinner). I have used the 8" chef's knife to dull it enough to not be scared, haven't used the rest, but when iI dull them down I will. The steel seems good quality, not very thick and yet still strong. Buy it, yet BE VERY CAREFUL.

Solid set of knives for $20. Four months in and still sharp. Odd that it includes a deba bocho, as it is only a four-piece set.

These are nice knives. I'm no expert, but I definitely think they were worth the price! My fiance loves to cook with them.

I bought the 3-piece set. Mine doesn't come with the small wedge shaped knife.

Came pretty shape. Bergoff's own X40cr14 with stamped steel. Made in China.

I didn't give it 5 stars because I haven't use it much. I'll give the extra star when I get more use of it.

I like the Santoku the best but it's not as sharp as the other knives.

Another thing about the Santoku is that the long ridge in the center of the blade doesn't serve any purpose. I don't see any high-end knife use that design. It might actually make the knife harder to cut things with.

Waterford Brayton Bead 45 Piece Premium 18/10 Stainless Flatware Set INCLUDES BONUS: 5 Piece Hostes

Waterford Brayton Bead 45 Piece Premium 18/10 Stainless Flatware Set INCLUDES BONUS: 5 Piece Hostess Serving SetWhile shopping for a replacement set of stainless-steel flatware, I was depressed by the number of reviews, at Amazon and other places, that bemoaned the current quality of the old American brands. Some people even noted that the quality had sunk noticeably in the past several years.

After some shopping, I went for this Waterford Brayton Bead 45-piece set because: (1) I've used the same 'bead'-pattern from various manufacturers as my everyday setting (Antique Bead, Continental Bead; the first was called "Fashionpoint") going back 30 years; (2) it's an eight-place setting of the standard five utensils (fork, salad fork, teaspoon, soup spoon, knife); (3) it includes the (again standard) five-piece hostess set of slotted spoon, serving spoon, cold meat fork, sugar spoon (sometimes called 'sugar shell'), and butter knife; (4) I've heard many people testify to Waterford's quality, and (5) I insisted on getting the type of stainless called "18/10".

Generally I am quite pleased. The bead design and the extent of the bead (which runs up the handle to the beginning of the teaspoon, for example) are just what I am used to. The utensils come to a slight peak at the bottom of each handle, but that is not an objectionable eccentricity to me. Fit-and-finish of the set is quite good, heft surprisingly well balanced, even though this kind of Waterford is made in China (and what isn't?). Soup spoons are deep enough, a nice surprise. The utensils are nice and heavy, heavier even than an 18/10 set of International I bought in the Nineties and am now going to put on reserve. The knife handles are NOT hollow! Because I've had a large-format flatware set for over 15 years, I was surprised to note in a number of prior reviews that the reviewers reacted with surprise and disfavor to other brands' "European-sized" flatware; if that bothers you, leave this one alone. But this alleged imposition is nothing all that new. To me, probably the biggest single eccentricity are the salad forks, which I've always expected to be a little diminutive. These Waterford Brayton Bead salad forks are almost as long as the long dinner forks! More like a dessert fork, really, though I doubt the difference will bother me much in the long run. The usual five serving or "hostess" utensils are good-sized and heavy.

"18/10" stainless refers to the composition of the stainless steel, in this case being 18 percent chromium (for rust-resistance) and ten percent nickel (which helps keep the implements shiny). One website I checked out said that for all intents and purposes, 18/8 is just as good, but one should definitely avoid eighteen over nothing (18/0). This can be tricky, as many manufacturers in their pattern descriptions do not always mention their stainless steel's composition, and there are undoubtedly many errors of omission hidden in sketchy advertising copy. (On the other hand, if a place setting is 18/8 or 18/10, a selling point is usually made of that.) Whatever the formula, scratches are not a big concern for me because my flatware (and silver, too) is always hand-washed. Waterford includes an instruction card with the set, much of which is common knowledge but some of which surprised me (not only should the user not mix stainless and silver in the dishwasher, that goes for aluminum too). Heed well.

We've had this set long enough to appreciate its heft and durability. In my opinion it rates five stars. Dinner is served!

These are wonderful. I just bought them from Costco for $89. VERY thick and heavy duty. Able to be washed in dishwasher. Stain resistant, so you don't have to worry about rust.

After going through many sets of silverware, I finally found a set that will last. Plus, the Waterford name is great. You know you can trust it.

You get a 12 place setting, 5 pieces each. Plus, 5 additional serving pieces (Serving spoon, slotted spoon, serving fork, etc.)

I wouldn't buy it from Amazon. Check your local Costco first. That's a giant difference in price. But if you are looking for a set that will last, you finally found it!

I received this set as a wedding present. I have used them for 6 months and frequently wash them in the dishwasher. The metal remains pristine: shiny and virtually scratch free! The bead design shows fine craftsmanship. I've only owned off-brand silverwear in the past, so this is definitely an upgrade!

Dominion Flatware, Sold by the Dozen

Winco 0001-08 Dinner KnifeSomehow forks were disappearing from my home and the teenagers seemed not to know where they go. This was an awesome set of replacement forks without having to buy a whole set. They are not the highest quality, but they will do for our needs at this time.

These are very thin. But I bought them because my kids keep accidentally throwing away the silverware. Putting the nice stuff up and using these for everyday use until then.

I knew I was ordering cheap but these things had an element of danger to them! The edges on the spoons, knives and tongs of the forks were too square. The photo of them made them look better than they did. It was as though the flatware missed its last stage of finishing. Not safe to use at all.

The forks are a little bit flimsy, but I needed some extra forks and that's what they are. With your hand guided it, it surley does the job.

Seriously, these forks are priced about as low as you could want. The quality is not wonderful, they don't look very nice, but I like them anyway. I take them to work and don't have to worry about them getting lost. I wouldn't use them if I were having guests over for dinner, I have other flatware for that.

So, if you are going to buy just know the use. If they are just for you and you don't need exceptional look and feel, get these.

If you want to impress your house guests STAY AWAY! Otherwise, these are great.

J.A. Henckels International Everedge Plus 3-Piece Starter SetThe knives work well and I truely appreciate the fact that they don't need sharpened. Feel a little light but get the job done.

Kind of reminds me of Ginsu knives, all have a serrated edge. Okay for the purpose as a starter set for my daughter-in-law. Fine at $19 but I would have been sorely disappointed if I'd paid $45.

Started by looking to buy a nice top end knife for my sister and realized it would be a waste. She is rough on knives but needs them for her family. Reed & Barton Crescendo II 18/0 Stainless-Steel 65-Piece Flatware Set with Storage Caddy, Service f

Reed & Barton Crescendo II 18/0 Stainless-Steel 65-Piece Flatware Set with Storage Caddy, Service for 12If you like heft and size in your silverware, this is the set for you! Besides the very bright and polished finish, this continental-sized flatware feels great in your hand and is perfect whether you're serving on your best china or your everyday dinnerware. And one of the very best parts? It comes with 12 extra teaspoons. If you're like me, sometimes those pesky spoons slip into the disposal and get chewed up and ragged. No problem with this set, you have 12 opportunities to replace the one you lost! The set also comes packaged in a wooden tray that slips into your kitchen drawer and can be used as a silverware holder for your buffets and potlucks.

I looked everywhere, both on line and in the brick-and mortars for a set I liked. My biggest concern was whether the set in the picture would look and feel as good in hand. I was more than pleased. This is the best, both in value and quality.

This is sturdy, strong, quality flatware with a serious flaw: rust keeps breaking through the knives on the serrated edge! I even diligently followed the directions with the set not to soak the knives and to avoid letting certain foods set on them before washing (which I have never had to do with flatware). But I'm still getting rusty spots on the cutting edge. What a shame.

I read the reviews on this product before I decided to purchase it from Amazon even though some of the reviewers stated they didn't think the stainless was 18/10 as is stated on Amazon's site. It arrived yesterday and upon examination there were, as another reviewer said, no markings stating it was 18/10 either stamped on the flatware it's self or on the packaging. I decided to send an email to Reed and Barton to see if they could shed some light on this discrepancy, and since I also own a another set of their flatware called Hammered stamped with 18/8 I asked about that also. Here's their reply:

Hello, the Crescendo II is not 18/10. It is 18/chrome (0). If the hammered pattern is stamped 18/8 that is what it is. All of our patterns used to be 18/8 then we went to 18/10 now most of our patterns sold in sets are 18/chrome (0).

I intend to email Amazon with this information and return the Crescendo II set I purchased from them. The Hammered set I own that is 18/8 has held up very well (8 years) with no pitting or staining, but then I only use it for special occasions and hand wash it afterward. It's a beautiful set.

J.A. Henckels International Fine Edge Pro 8-Inch Stainless-Steel Chef Knife

J.A. Henckels International Fine Edge Pro 8-Inch Stainless-Steel Chef KnifeI bought this knife because I love my other, more expensive Henckels, and needed something in about this size. I figured I'd try the low-priced model to see how it compared.

Out of the box the knife had a great edge, and worked exceptionally. After a couple weeks of heavy use, however, the edge was all but gone. A quick run through a Henckel sharpener, however, and the great edge had returned.

You'll need to sharpen this knife a lot more than the more expensive versions, but if you don't mind taking the 10 seconds every other week to do this, you should be very happy with this knife.

When I walked into my local Meijer's I was looking for an inexpensive knife to beat up on. Allow me to clarify... I sharpen my own knives of all varieties. Kitchen, utility, tactical... You name it, I sharpen them. I like to be able to put a razor sharp shaving capable edge on all of my knives. I was looking for a very cheap knife to use as an instructional tool for my wife. I wanted to teach her some basic sharpening skills, and she needed something to practice on. As a cutlery enthusiast, I enjoy doing research on varying knife steels, buying knives that use them, and then testing their qualities and performance. So, when I purchased this knife for under $10, I wasn't expecting much. I was looking for a straight edged bolster-less 8" plus chef's knife, but aside from that, I really did not expect to like the knife. However, after testing it straight out of its package, I was very impressed with how well it performed. This knife is an excellent slicer for fruits and vegetables. Instead of having my wife mess up the finish of this blade, I decided to add it to my collection.

Here are the reasons why I have rated this product 5 stars:

1. Even though its thin blade profile may give the impression of being cheap, it actually makes this knife an excellent slicer, outperforming heavy more expensive German knives, Henckels or otherwise.

2. Because of the thin blade, even though it is a full tang handle design, it is very light weight. For someone who may have wrist issues, carpal tunnel, tendonitis, etc, this knife will feel very good in hand. I have found no balance issues either. It is perfectly balanced at the hilt, which also adds to the in hand feel.

3. It is very inexpensive!!! Did I mention I purchased the knife under $10? This is the biggest selling point. I wouldn't expect a whole lot from a knife at this price point, but if you understand the limitations of the steel at this price point(i.e. needing to be re-sharpened more frequently)then you will be very happy with its performance. Also, as an aside, I have re-sharpened this knife once since I bought it, and it was very easy to put a hair shaving sharp edge on it after a few minutes on my water-stones. So, I suppose the final selling point would be...

4. Ease of re-sharpening. Even though it won't hold an edge as long as a knife with a premium steel such as vg-10(which would also cost 8~15 times as much), it was very easy to re-sharpen.

In summary, I think this was an excellent purchase for the money. It outperforms some of my much more expensive chef's knives when it comes to slicing. It won't hold an edge forever, but neither will any other kitchen knife. If you never want to have to re-sharpen your knives, but just want them to have a sort of blunt edge that stays the same for years...then get a butter-knife instead :)

Also, I just remembered, the handle isn't the most comfortable thing in the world in terms of its shape(I can't use the same "pinch" grip I use on my more ergonomically designed knives). It felt a little blocky in hand, and I had to modify my grip a little to make it work. But, again, for the price, I really don't find it to be a show stopper. Once I fixed my grip to accommodate the shape, it performed very comfortably and beautifully. Honestly, if you don't already have a different grip that you are accustomed to, then you may never even notice. And to be sure, I actually change my grip slightly when switching between knives with different handle shapes, so it really wasn't that big of a deal.

I paid about [$$$] for this knife and have used it for a month now. it's a very good knife for this price. the blade is thin at the sharp edge and is thicker that the top; so it is sharp and strong at the same time. it's not carbon steel, so it will need sharpened once in a while but it doesn't take much work since the blade is thin. I use this knife all the time and i like it.

I don't cook much, so I needed an inexpensive knife which would be sharp and reliable. I've had it for several months and have not had to sharpen it once, but I use it only a couple times a week. It's nice and sharp, relatively well-balanced and comfortable to use, and cleans easily.

If you aren't serious enough about cooking to want more than one knife to use in the kitchen, this is an excellent choice.

OXO Good Grips 6-1/2-Inch Santoku Knife

OXO Good Grips 6-1/2-Inch Santoku KnifeI use this knife to cut yams, stew meat, carrots, mangos and everything else. It cuts them nicely. I also use the OXO sharpener with it.

The most important thing is that it fits my small hands. And the Santoku style feels natural to use.

I work in a store that sells many brands of Santoku knives but didn't have anything small enough for me to have control. The knife rep taught us the major high quality brands will last 3x longer. I can see why, but if they are too long and awkward, that doesn't help me.

The grip, as always for OXO, feels very natural. Other OXO products I love are a pot scrubber brush, a wisk, a veggie brush.

The grater is quite flat and fits better in the drawer and in the dishwasher than my previous grater. Grates well. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I don't know how it will hold up with time and being dishwasher-washed 1x/week, but I am optimistic.

I do like to add grated cheese to macaroni and cheese dishes when their cheese flavor needs a little help. I would have preferred one with a hole for slicing the cheese, but I liked the size of this one. When it came in the mail I wasted no time in putting it to work and found it to be satisfactory in grating cheese. One side has larger holes than the other so you can control how finely you want to grate the cheese, which is nice. It is easy to clean and is pretty flat so it does not take up much room in the drawer. The orange handle makes it easy to spot when I need it, and glad I had chosen it as my cheese grater.

Received the knives and started using them the first day. The knives are sharp and easy to handle. The only knife that I really don't care for is the serrated utility knife (5"), I am hoping to find a none serrated knife to match the set. I don't care for serrated because you cannot sharpen them and they are awkward for me to use. Others may have no problem with the serrated knife. The remaining knives are fabulous and the steak knives actually cut not tear. The knives feel solid in your hand to include the steak knives. I don't think anyone would be disappointed in this set.

Ergo Paring Knife

Ergo Paring Knife, YellowI have bought as total of 4 of these now. I was so used to the cheaper made products I used it like I did them. Gave myself a new deep cut and didn't know it until it bled. Since I use a light touch and I am very careful. Fast and easier than my older ones. So glad I got these before the price goes up.

This was purchased after I had bought and used the Ergo zester. I was impressed with the quality and the lovely soft pastel color (green). The ergonomic handle enables me to have a good solid grip. It is perfect and feels so comfortable in my hand. I have arthritis and this paring knife made paring and slicing an apple and pear so easy. As usual when I get a new tool I go to town using it. It very smoothly sliced through a carrot. It is a good sized paring knife and well balanced. The blade is very sharp and I like the sleek look and over all design. The quality is very good. They look and feel sturdy and I feel they will last. The handle does not feel like cheap plastic! I wanted items made in USA these are not; but, I feel they have been made with quality in mind unlike other products that are lacking that are made in China. I have since purchased a few more tools from Ergo and I am enjoying using them in my little kitchen. I had down sized and got rid of so many gadgets. Now I'm replacing the OXO ergonomic pieces that I gave away with these sleek, colorful and pleasingly designed tools. The color compliments my dishes that have a shade of sage and my Kiwi LE cast iron pieces. It makes cooking and baking fun again.

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin Pro-S 4-Piece Steak Set

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin Pro-S 4-Piece Steak SetOh, dear God, I love these knives. Their weight in your hand is hefty without being tiring. The blades are sharp, precise, and easy to handle. And do they slice? I mean -and do they SLICE!!!

After each meal, I hand-wash these instruments and give them a quick touch of the sharpening stone. I then gently, very gently, place them back into their case for safekeeping. Is it any wonder my fiancé is jealous?

I do have one complaint -I only have four of these knives. I'm going to need at least eight more for the grilling I plan to do next summer. I mean, it's going to take a big patio party to properly show off these fine blades.

The bogus MSRP price in this listing aside, the $99 is the typical street price for this set and it's not cheap but so worth it. Very good quality in blade and handle. The knives make eating steak a special event ... well, almost. But it's a serious step up from the Eversharp knives, where the serration is great but rips the meat rather than cut (as the smooth edged Pro-S). Would buy again, even if the price is a bit high.

Gibson Mr Coffee Crafton 1.8-Liter Whistling Tea Kettle

Gibson Mr Coffee Crafton 1.8-Liter Whistling Tea KettleThe best tea kettle I've ever had! I read all the different reviews for all the different Brands of stainless tea kettles & decided to take a chance on this one. I use it several times a day, EVERY day so far, no rust! I love the seamless shape (no fused bottom to worry about leaks or other problems). The stainless lid fits nice & tight (no worry about popping off when tilting the kettle to pour) & fully removes for a nice wide opening for cleaning. The shape is clean & timeless. The whistle is loud enough to be heard in another part of the house. The handle is super comfortable, with a well-placed, easy-open mechanism for large or small or arthritic hands. It may get a little warm to the touch when the water boils, but certainly NOT hot or uncomfortable no potholder needed! My only negative comment is that my kettle arrived without any paperwork no shipping or return info from Amazon & no brochure or paperwork with care or warranty info from the manufacturer. After notifying both, I'm still without that info. But I DO love this kettle!

I bought this tea kettle elsewhere but I wanted to share my experience. I used this kettle daily. Steam came out of the spout and at the water lid (I couldn't get it too tight or I'd never get it off) thereby decreasing the power of the whistle, which ended up close to non-existent. The bottom had begun to rust inside and so I had 'floaters' that had nothing to do with my tea. I only had it for a couple of months so kudos to the Chinese manufacturers that have put together another fine product. It's in the garbage and I'm shopping for another kettle.

Shimomura Left Handed Yanagiba Sashimi Knife 200mm #6298This knife can take a nice edge and holds it relatively well -tho not as well as many other Japanese knives, but it is not carbon steel as advertised. It appears to be stainless steel. And more importantly, the back is not hollow ground. For only $50 bucks I didn't expect much, but this is more like a $20 noname knife.

Victorinox 46661 3.25 Paring Knife White

Victorinox 46661 3.25 Paring Knife WhiteThis knife uses the same punched steel as all other Victorinix paring knives. The white handle is adequate and is easy to hold when wet. I run this across a ceramic sharpening rod a few times before each use and it has remained razor sharp (it will shave hair off your arm).

the best . worth every penny . never ever had such a good one sharp and nice . again the best from any wert.

Russell International Cutlery, Slicer, Utility Scalloped 8

Russell International Cutlery, Slicer, Utility Scalloped 8The knife works well. I wished I had spent the few extra $$$ and got the wood handle one that was was looking at. I had 2 wood handles that I used for over 20 years, and this one still cuts good, but not exactly what I wanted. I would recommend this for the money !!!
