I love this set. The chrome is super deluxe. The carousel is interesting and european looking. Except for the can opener (Mine is not smoothly operating due to a burr on the grinding wheel), all the other 5 pieces in the set are highest quality and a dream to use. I probably should have given only 4 stars because of the opener, but I just love it anyway. Think I can get get rid of that burr with a metal file. Shun Ken Onion 3-Inch Paring Knife
I have been hooked on Ken Onion knives since I first bought a Ken Onion Blur tactical folding knife. The lines are both attractive and functional on his knife designs. I then splurged on an 8-inch chef's knife about a year ago. That knife quickly replaced almost all my other knives for most tasks. The handle is perfectly designed to promote a pinch grip that gives you tons of control.When I saw this knife come across on a lightning deal, I had no choice. For the first time I caught a glimpse of what the characters of Sex in the City felt like when seeing a killer pair of shoes on sale (never seen the show, but I assume that must have happened). Even though I had three paring knives, I had to have this one.
Glad I bought it. This angle is unique, for sure, but it's nice in that you can still get a nice full grip of the substantial handle while avoiding banging your knuckles into the cutting board. Years ago there was a line of Shun knives called Alton's Angles; this seems to be the rebirth of that concept, although Ken Onion gets the royalties this time rather than Alton Brown. This knife is great for handheld paring tasks, as well as work on a board. It quickly became my favorite paring knife.
Let me address the sharpness issue in a couple of negative reviews. If you're comparing this to a victorinox forchner (great knife, no disrespect) or a Wusthof or a Henckels, you probably already have an appreciation for great knife design. However, those are german-designed steels with Rockwell Hardness scores in the high 50s (58 or so). This means they will hold an edge reasonably well, but will also be reasonably easy to sharpen. They are ground to about a 22 degree bevel.
These Shun knives (and Globals, as well as certain Henckels lines, MAC, etc) are made from a harder steel. They have a hardness rating over 60 (as high as 63). This allows them to be ground to a sharper edge (around 15-17 degrees). That means they'll be less adept at crushing bones and processing whole chickens, but you'll get paper-thin slices of tomato or sashimi. You'll also mince ginger or garlic or shallots or chives with ease. However, with a harder steel comes more difficult sharpening. Once sharp, though, it will hold its edge longer.
I highly recommend this knife, and any in the Ken Onion line. I also recommend getting a magnetic strip MIU France Stainless Steel Magnetic Knife Holder, 20-Inches or knife dock The Container Store Knife Dock to hold them securely and avoid banging around in the drawer. I also recommend a wood, end-grain cutting board Proteak Teak Cutting Board Rectangle 20-by-14-by-2-1/2-Inch Hand Grip and Juice Canal, End Grain or polypropylene one OXO Good Grips 10-1/2-by-15-Inch Utility Cutting Board, Black Edge (the OXO fits in the dishwasher). Hand-wash your knife and dry it before storage and you won't have any issues with rust. Unlike carbon-steel knives, this is a very low-maintenance blade.
Lastly, to maintain your blade, I recommend using a honing rod after every use or at least every few uses Shun DM0750 Sharpening Steel the Shun has an angle guide for both german and japanese angles. Note this is a honing rod, and not a sharpener, although most honing steels are still marketed as sharpening steels, unless they are diamond or ceramic, they won't sharpen. I also recommend a dedicated sharpener for use once every 6-12 months. I don't like the rod idea for taking off metal to restore a blade too much room for error. I like one that gives you good control and low risk of damaging blades (i.e. a manual one) my favorite is this one: Spyderco 204MF Triangle Sharpmaker.This is an extremely well shaped knife, nothing like your average paring knife. It is more like a mini santoku knife in the way it operates. It chops, dices and pares with ease and is extremely easy to handle. I had thought the weight of the knife would make it less capable, but it does not. It cuts through everything with aplomb.
As far as the rust report by another individual. We have not seen that at all. We, of course, do not wash it in a dishwasher. Not sure if they did. But ours shines like new.
Note that at times, some rust can poke through on a knife made of carbon steel. Usually a good scrubbing gets rid of it. But we have not seen that at all on these knives.

This 3 inch paring knife is easily 5 stars. It seems a bit pricy when you realize that for only a few dollars more you can get the much bigger Shun Ken Onion knives, but this is a very handy size and much easier to manipulate and cut stuff than some of the larger knives. Especially if you have not been trained as a professional chef. The blade is very nice looking with the Damascus looking ripples in the blade. It has a 3/4 shank. The bolsters are very well made and fit both the blade and handles very well. The handle looks to made out of some sort of dark wood, possibly Ebony. The feel of the contoured handle is very comfortable and the angle of the blade to the handle seems well thought out. I bought three Shun knives from the lower end of the collection just to see if all the hoopla about Shun was just that or if these knives are for real. They're for real. Great little knife that is very sharp and fits my hand nicely. I shaved a soft peach of its skin and did so removing a minimal amount of fruit while the skin came away effortlessly. Much better than my Wusthoff.I already had two paring knives (one German, one Japanese) but when I saw this one I had to try it. I have two (different) Shun knives already and so knew the quality would be great and it is. I love the design of this knife because I can use it for all those little jobs that one is "supposed" to use a chef's or utility knife for but in reality a 3" blade is quite enough: slicing or chopping pitted olives, slicing a few strawberries, halving cherry tomatoes, chopping herbs, etc etc. It's especially handy when prepping a small quantity of something for 1 or 2 people. I have used every form of cutlery from Department Store cheapies on up to hand-made custom knives costing many hundreds of dollars. If I could select merely one knife from them all this would be it. I have used mine 7 days a week for a year and have not once touched the blade to any steel or honing implement. I use it at home, in the restaurant and on catering gigs. I have large hands and the handle fits perfect. This knife also looks great. I considered a MAC Chef Knife; but the Shun left-handed handle feels perfect. I think the handle is small enough for people with smaller hands too. I did also consider a high quality tier Wusthof or Henckel; but I did not like their handles or feel.
The Shun feels ideal in terms of weight and balance and all forms of cutting and slicing. I do having a paring knife; but it is not a Shun. I am considering getting a Shun Paring Knife as my Henckel (middle quality tier) is no where near as sharp and it's handle is a little short compared with the Shun. The blade and over all look of the Shun Classic Chef knife is beautiful. It is my favorite and best knife I have owned.
I use a bamboo cutting board with this knife. I rinse them off and wipe them dry after each use; both the Knife and cutting board. They are easy to wash and dry. The knife is a joy to use and makes food preparation fun. I keep my Shun Chef Knife in a wooden block. This knife is worth it's cost.

This flatware set is shown in a nice display box, but when it came it was just loose inside a cardboard box on some ripped up tissue paper! The pieces have smudges, fingerprints, and scratches all over them. We ordered this for a baby shower gift but there's no way I can give it to someone in this kind of shape. I'm extremely disappointed!Tossed in a brown box with all the piece lose banging up against each other. Like the previous reviewer, my flatware arrived in a plain, white cardboard box with all pieces in individual plastic sleeves all wrapped in tissue paper.I ordered this knowing that mine may not arrive in the gift box shown in the product listing so I am OK with this. The flatware is for my kids, not a gift.
The pieces are nice. No scratches on mine and the finish seems good on all pieces. I am adding a photo above so that you can see the sizes of the pieces in relation to common kids flatware.
My daughter had been using the blue Gerber fork shown since about 20 months without any trouble. She is now 3, so I just wanted some 'real' flatware for her since our salad forks are still a bit big. The Ginko Panda child's fork is a bit narrower and the tines are longer than what she is used to.
The baby spoon is a bit smaller than a 'standard' Gerber rubber coated spoon and the toddler spoon is just a tiny bit bigger than it, but they are almost the same. In my opinion, the 'baby and toddler' set Ginkgo Panda-Babies Made in the USA 3-Piece Baby & Toddler Flatware Set is just a baby set and the 'child' set Ginkgo Panda-Babies Made in the USA 3-Piece Child Flatware Set is a toddler set.

This is one nifty knife. No sooner had I unpacked it and popped it into my block than it was put to task, along with my carpenter's hammer covered with a plastic bag: "lobster acquisition" for salad, from claws and knuckles. I have been doing this for over twenty years and never has a blade been so elegantly suited. It sliced right through the small shells and its small profile just searched into all the narrow spaces. It really is unique, I think, in its daintiness...but with fairly substantial, and nice looking handle. I have other Chicagos and believe that the walnut is equal or better than the new rubber stuff, when wet. I was a bit skeptical when placing the order since the price was quite low, and I was not sure if it's going to suffer from quality issues or if it's going to do the job.However, the product arrived and appeared to be well made (I'm a bit obsessive about trivial details, and I do prefer walnut over plastic), and it sharpened my generic kitchen knife (no fancy japanese hardened steel knives here) with just a few swipes. It is also quite long enough for my knives without being too long and unwieldy. For my knife it appeared to take off some metal as some fine shards did show, and after longer use there was a thin coat of grey powder in its grooves (that can be cleaned off easily).
The walnut handle/guard has a reasonably good grip. It seems to do the job quick and well without making a fuss. It is also fairly hefty and feels right with the sharpening motion. It is a no-nonsense tool that has a very reasonable price. I'm very happy with it.This is a grooved, rather than a straight steel. This means it is taking significant portions of metal off your edge with each pass (that's the job of a sharpening tool, not a honing tool!). The grooves risk significant damage to your blade. The grooving is sort of apparent from the photo, but it should be made more explicit. Consider yourself forewarned!

I've had my CC steel for some 15 years now; it does a very nice job of keeping a sharp edge on my knives I use it before every time I cut tomatoes, and about weekly otherwise. Main knife at this point is a Pure Komachi vegetable knife the two work fantastically well together. Others have said it it doesn't look like much.But it works, and it works better than any other knife on all kinds of cheese (except cottage cheese).
You need less than half the downward pressure that a normal knife requires, so it's good for people with arthritis or for kids.
It would be hard to cut yourself with it.
It leaves both the cheese slice and the remaining block edges smooth.
Cheese will not stick to the blade (except cottage cheese).
And it is dishwasher safe we've had ours for over a year, and it goes into the dishwasher almost daily.
It doesn't look like much, but it sure does work.I have to admit I was disappointed in the way it looks. The blade is white plastic and has an "inexpensive" look to it. However...it is amazing to use on all cheeses from room temperature brie to parmesan reggiano straight from the refrigerator. It cuts much easier than a normal metal knife as it has very little drag as it cuts. It leaves the remaining cheese looking intact, not crumbled or misshapen. The "magic" is the shape of the blade's sides, definitely not in the keenness of the blade. It won't cut a carrot and it would be really hard to cut yourself, but cheese? Fantastico!

Believe it or not but this bizarre little plastic (Yes, I said Plastic) kitchen tool will be the best cheese knife you'll ever use. It cuts and cuts and cuts and never gums up! Never! It even cuts gooey brownies without sticking. Doesn't look like much but it is hidden treasure!I first came across it hanging with the usual suspects in a Gourmet kitchen tool display featuring traditional cheese knives. It looked flimsy so I passed on it. Then I saw it again in a friend's kitchen and decided to give it a go. I was HOOKED. I tried it on everything including freshly made fudge, and it worked like a charm. Bonus: it can be used in Teflon cake pans, no scratching.
What makes it more successful than the usual cheese knife? You can't see it in the picture, but the blade design is a series of V shapes that sweep the cheese away from the blade surface and allow air to lodge between the blade and the cheese so that only the cutting edge touches the cheese as you press the knife through.
Is it flimsy? No, but you can't go cutting down trees with it. I don't know what it's made of; the promos call it a space-age material. It feels light and smooth and flexes yet it doesn't bend or buckle when pressing through soft and medium cheese. (I don't need it for rock-hard cheese) The handle is comfortable and graspable.
It looks so small, how can it be of much use? True, the blade is only four inches long but because of its cutting prowess it can handle most store sized cheeses. There is a longer version available and I've heard good things about it, but I've had the small one more than four years and it's been plenty.
What should I worry about? Treat it with care. It looks harmless so it's easy to forget it is a KNIFE. The cutting edge is very sharp and should be kept away from fingertips and children. (I managed to sharpen it on a carbide cutter) Keep it away from heat and store it in its sheath or hang it up.
Finally, this is one of those kitchen tools you'll find more and more uses for as you encounter problems to solve. Everyone I have turned on to it loves the thing. It isn't in many stores yet, so keep a lookout if you're a tire kicker who won't buy on-line.
PS: This one is a different color handle but the same great cutting tool as the earlier model.

When I first opened the package I was surprised to discover this knife is plastic?Do not let the product material dissuade you. This knife cuts through different types of cheeses with precision.
What is unique is that there is no danger in accidentally cutting yourself instead of cheese. Most handy when copious amounts of wine is involved with the cheese slicing.
The cheese does not stick on the side of the blade and you can cut very thin slices with little effort.
Also, this knife is very attractive in appearance when having guests participate in making their own cheese selection.
I recommend this cheese knife for the kitchen and entertaining.This is the second cheese knife that I have purchased. Have bought many cheese knives in the past and they never worked like this one. It is great!!

Years ago I bought a package deal from On The Table containing a first generation Pure Komachi Fish knife and Kitchen Shears (matching colors) for $20. We're still using both, but the Fish knife has had some of the coating near the edge chip away; however, it's also the most used knife in our kitchen. Though I've sharpened this knife many times over the years, it holds its edge much better than most of my knives, some of which are fairly expensive. They're also easy to sharpen. Pure Komachi knives seem to be fairly high carbon and I honestly prefer them to my Gerber, Mac (non-pro), etc. knives. In my opinion, Pure Komachi knives are better than anything else you will find at most (non-specialized) department stores.I keep all of my kitchen cutlery, regardless of quality, very sharp. I use Spyderco Fine and Ultra Fine bench stones. I sharpen my knives before they get dull, such that they are usually sharp enough to shave hair. My Pure Komachi continues to hold a great edge.
I also own a number of Pure Komachi 2 knives (made in China), which is what I'm reviewing here. As far as their blade characteristics go, the second generation knives are essentially the same as the first generation Pure Komachi knives (made in Japan). First generation Pure Komachi knives had slightly more appealing colors and nice translucent handles (and the knife tang contained cutouts depicting fish, bread, etc. depending on the knife's purpose).
Wash these knives by hand--I recommend against putting any knives in the dishwasher. In this case it's bad for the coating, but it seems likely that putting knives in the dishwasher can damage their temper. As absurd as that may sound to you, I inherited a few knives from my grandparents that are duplicates of knives I've owned that have that simply won't hold an edge (while mine will). The only difference is that my grandparents washed their knives in the dishwasher.
Higher end knives are better than Pure Komachi, but one high end knife will cost you as much as a full set of Pure Komachi knives. I vastly prefer my 4 Shun knives--they get sharper and stay sharp much longer, but they're expensive knives and I tend to baby them (and hide them from guests).A good knife for about ten bucks. The lifetime free sharpening from Kershaw/Shun is nice too. Because the blade edge is SIXTEEN DEGREES not 15 degrees, I suggest you send the knife back to Kershaw/Shun for free re-sharpening. Failure to re-sharpen with the proper angle makes the knife not work for cutting.

I was first drawn to this item because of the color. After I tried it for the first time the quality of the item won me over! You have to be careful the first few times you use this it is so light that you underestimate how well it cuts!This knife is worth twice the price I highly recommend you purchase it!I love all Komachi knives. They cut extremely well, and the resin makes them rust-resistant. They are easy to grip, and the colors make it easy to identify their use. They clean easily and are great to use. I buy them as presents for friends and family every year for Christmas. The fish knife is great for tuna, salmon, tilapia and catfish. Those are the only fish that I have tried it on.

I heard a lot of raves about Joseph Joseph products so I was happy to find this on Amazon.It looks great and the colour is fantastic.
However after just two uses as a cutting board, which it is, it is showing white cut marks already.
I will keep using it and it is better for keeping your knife from getting dull.
I guess the best part about this item is once the one side gets too shabby looking from knife cuts I can turn it over and start again.
So kind of a two for one cutting board.
Maybe when you have guests and you want your kitchen to look good turn it over. When you want to use it turn it back.I chose this cutting board after seeing people complain about the flatness and springiness of thinner 1/2" thick plastic cutting boards. This one is a little thicker than 3/4" and is quite sturdy. The concern expressed by another reviewer of knives leaving white marks on the board is not a problem for the white version of this cutting board. Only complaint I have is that the board did not sit flat on the counter when I first took it out of the box, but I rearranged the rubber feet and it sits just fine. I really like this cutting board, very thick and sturdy on the counter and the legs keep it well stationed. Also, it's nice that the legs pop out and can be put on the other way, making the board reversible. Definitely won't regret this buy, this is my favorite cutting board. I found mines at a closeout sale for 4.99. Honestly, I had never heard of these products before but was immediately attracted to the heft and sturdy construction of this product. Immediately I wanted to use it and take it home. I had been knife shopping for a long time before I finally settled on Zwilling's Kramer santoku. I knew I wanted a santoku and I knew I wanted something I could count on lasting a lifetime. I don't tend to agonize much over any of my purchases but I found myself struggling to find the knife I wanted. The market seems lately flooded with a multitude of high quality knives featuring a bewildering variety of blade and handle designs not to mention different steel types! I was eventually drawn to this particular knife because the European style chef knives from the same line seem to earn such high praise. Oddly, Iv'e had little luck in finding many impressions of this particular model on the internet. I gambled that Zwilling had put as much care into the crafting of the santoku as apparently went into their other Kramer designed knives. I have not been disappointed.This knife feels wonderful in my hand. It is well balanced and comfortable in any of the grips I normally use. The edge curvature suits up and down veggie slicing quite well and contrary to what some have found, I really like the way the blade rocks from tip to heel when I mince herbs. Of course, it is intimidatingly sharp right out of the box. I've only been using it for a few days now so the blade has lost none of that initial edge but I look forward to seeing how long it lasts. Straight carbon is well known for its ability to hold a sharp edge for a long time and to resharpen quite easily. I'd like to point out one aspect of the blade that is not at all obvious in any of the pictures or descriptions of it that I've found. The thickness of the blade tapers very evenly along its entire length to become very, very thin for the last inch or so. This is great for performing delicate work and is a testament to the attention to detail which went into this knife's construction.
I hope to update this review in the future and report how well this tool holds up to longer term wear and tear. I might even upload a few pics to illustrate how the patina develops.There are 2 versions of the Bob Kramer 7 inch Santoku knife
1. Bob Kramer 7 inch Carbon Steel Santoku by Zwilling JA Henckels made in Germany: This a great knife but be aware that it has a Carbon Steel Blade and requires maintenance to create a patina and prevent rust. The blade keeps a very sharp edge longer.
2. Bob Kramer 7 inch Santoku knife by Shun made in Japan: This the knife I chose. I tried both at Sur La Table which is where I bought it. This Shun Bob Kramer knife is meticulously crafted by 150 expert artisans to achieve the precise heft, balance and shape of Bob Kramer's original design. The 3mm steel blade is composed of an SG2 core (64-66HRC) clad with true pattern-welded nickel and Damascus stainless steel for a beautiful, razor-sharp and lasting edge. The Handle is the same on both versions and is Gently rounded and richly grained red and black Pakkawood handle is crafted in Bob's signature contoured shape, and mirrors the curve of the palm for a wonderfully natural hand-feel. It was a financial stretch as I'm Irish and Swedish. This knife and the one above are worth there weight in gold. The Shun cost $40 more then the carbon steel but was well worth the cost to me. The Blade is a work of art and there is no patina maintenance required.

Brockenb, the fault is indeed yours. You DID misuse the knife. This kind of knife cannot be used for cutting bone and doing so will break the blade, which is what happened to you. Also, a carbon steel knife will acquire a patina, and requires proper care.It sounds to me like you had no idea what you were buying, or how to use it properly. In the future, I suggest Target -they have some very nice knives for $25 or so that should be perfect for you.

I received my Kramer by Zwilling knife as a gift. It looked and worked great at first, but then it began to rust. I've never seen a knife rust before, but it looked awful. Then, while cutting through some meat, the edge of the knife caught on a piece of bone and a big chunk came out of the blade, totally destroying the knife. I contacted Kramer and received an email from Bob Kramer himself essentially blaming me for improper knife use. I got this a few months ago, i never used it because i hated the way it felt in your hand. I didnt cut one thing with it, and I put it back in the box and returned it. 2 weeks later i get a partial refund ($150/$329), stating that i stained the steel with my fingerprint (if thats even possible.) So i had to open a claim with amazon which i won to get the rest of my money. Very bad experience and wont order from them again. I think this knife is very over rated and the paring knife i have of this brand has rusted and looks horrible and ive never dishwashed it and always cleaned it right after use. If it only lived up to the standards of what is stated in the product listing this would be a *good* spoon, but this spoon goes the extra mile and does so in such a lightweight, eco -friendly, utterly stylish way that my other cooking spoons never stood a chance of keeping their place in the countertop crock.I read the measurements before ordering but was still impressed with the generous size when it arrived see photo. Two of my favorite design features are handles that don't take up much room in my crock and the embossed measuring guides. Never owned a spoon with a fancy paper pedigree before a *certificate* from the Forest Stewardship Council for use of green materials. Made of non-porous, bacteria resistant materials too. And heat resistant to 400*F degrees. Oh, and made in USA.

*I*, on the other hand, am VERY pleased with this purchase and give it my highest recommend.It seems odd to say that I love a spoon, but I gotta admit I love this one. The bowl is large and deep and the shape is just right to gather up a lot of food when I'm serving. And unlike ordinary ladles, the bowl lies flat enough to hang very neatly on my pegboard.
And did I mention that it's simply beautiful?

If I had the counter space I would certainly go for a giant knife block. But I don't have any counter space but still wanted to protect my knives. These fit the bill. The quality is good and the blade guard won't fall off the knife in the drawer. It also won't rub on the blades. The guards seem to be well made so I think they will last a long time. Also, if I want to I can take a knife to other places, like to work, camping or a picnic, because the blade guard won't fall off during transport.I have to say though that they don't come off too easily. So elderly people may have difficulty here. On the other hand, children will be slowed down for a moment as well which could be a bonus.I'm a chef and don't always want to carry a knife roll to work so this allows me to safely secure a blade and keep in my pocket, the blade will not budge until you open the clamshell style side. Don't know if they're dishwasher safe have not tried that.

I bought these Edge-Mag knife protectors along with a new set of Victorinox steak knives. They work great and will ensure my knives last the rest of my life. Literally. I chose these for two reasons: Cost, and no loss of counterspace (as you would have with a wooden block). For me, it was a sound decision all the way around.Victorinox Universal Attache Case

I hate using sayas or blade guards and this case obviates the need to mess with them. I'd be willing to pay a premium for an aluminum version essentially the same but maybe an inch or so larger. Or a plastic case as nice as Pelican but designed exactly like this one.
While the case looks a bit cheap 'n' cheesy, overall I really like it. It may feel a bit lightweight but it's held up to the abuse of a pro kitchen just fine over the years. I've used many different rolls and so far I've never found anything I like any better.

This is about the only hard case design I could find for knives that didn't include the whole knife set and wasn't per se a brief case that cost a fortune. I also like how it has the compartments for other things below the knives. The only thing that is off a little is how the tray comes off to expose the compartments underneath. This case is as advertised with plenty of space for knife storage, and the accessory compartments underneath the knife tray have plenty of storage space. My criticisms come in the form of the rigidity of the plastic used for the outer case itself. It seems very flexible and I am concerned about its' durability. Second, when the knife tray is full and the case is closed, the two exterior latches that are supposed to hold the case closed, do not maintain the lid closed and secured. They pop open after a few minutes leaving the lid ajar. It seems that the foam used on the inside of the lid to keep the knives from moving during transport, exert upward pressure on the lid, thus popping the latches open. I'm looking for small padlocks that will fit into the holes provided in the latches to keep the lid closed, but I'm thinking that will turn out to be a real hassle in the long run. Really, this should have a 3.5 star rating, but I rounded up. The case is a fairly sturdy plastic and appears to be designed for kitchen knives. However, I needed something to store outdoors/hunting type knives in (Ka Bar style). This case kind of accomodates those knives, but you'll have to do some wiggling. Unfortunately, I was not having any luck finding a product specifically designed for these types of knives. The hilt gets in the way of the "clip in" style storage system. If you can't find any type of case specifically for your outdoor knives, this will get the job done for the most part. Bear in mind that a very large hilt will prevent storage of your knife in this case.There is also a tray underneath the "clip in" storage system that is large enough to hold several sheaths, some pocket knives, a honing stone, and several 18" sharpening rods.
Overall, this is an acceptable way to store some outdoor knives, but I'll keep looking for something that is solely suited to that purpose.Well, I do not own this yetttt but my head chef and restaurant owner has it along with another co-worker and the case seems to hold up to the use and also holds a lot within the base. I will further review it once I get it next week. (I bought it through a friend who works for Victorinox)
