Chicago Cutlery Walnut Tradition 6-Inch Utility Knife

This is, in my opinion, the best all-around kitchen knife you can buy. And is, to boot, one of the least expensive. Perfect hand fit, and the blade width and length are such that it is INCREDIBLY versatile. I use it to slice, de-bone, core, fillet, you name it. I can't think of another knife that you can use to core a small jalapeno pepper as well as slice prime rib. I've used mine daily since I got married almost 19 years ago.

Note: a high-end sous chef told me about 10 years ago that, if you pay 15 dollars for a knife, you are overpaying, and you only need two knives at most, a utility knife (like this one) and a bigger chef's knife for fine chopping veggies and smashing garlic. And then with a pair of squeeze tongs, a saute pan, a sauce pan, a stock pot, a collander, there's your kitchen, and you should pay no more than 100.00 total for all. And "You should actually pay less than 50.00 for the whole set because you should buy it all at a restaurant auction. Otherwise you're throwing yur money away."

This is a good knife for the price. To me it does not feel as balanced or precise as my 6 inch Henckels Four Star but then it is also a fraction of the price. The knife feels particularly appropriate for butchering meat.

Have been using my orignal knife set for 18 years. Couldn't ask for better. This one was for my daughter. When I visit I cook and can't stand not having great cutlery. A tip to all never put these in the dishwasher. It will ruin the walnut handles. Keep them oiled with whatever is available in the kitchen including bacon grease or olive oil. My grandfather used to oil his Saw blades with a fat meat skin from his smoke house. It worked

I've had this same knife for atleast 15 years. I have used this knife for just about anything in the kitchen. Since I am not living by myself anymore I had to buy 2 more just to be able to cut something. My original knife is still like new and I sharpen it myself often. As with all wooden handled knives, hand wash it, do not throw it in the dishwasher. The heat from the dishwasher also messes up the edge of the blade anyway. Also use cutting board oil or mineral oil on the handle once in a while so it does not dry out and crack. Chicago make good quality knives. I love this knife.

This set looks great. But that's the only good thing I could say. I bought this set thinking what a great deal on a complete set of knives with the KitchenAid name. I've used them for about a year now and I am extremely disappointed. Every knife has rust spots, appearing to be unclean. The knives sharpen with a little effort, but do not hold an edge very long. I would not buy this set again. I'm very disappointed in the KitchenAid name!

I bought this knife set and used for 5 months now. It is pretty complete that it comes with the sharpener. The water got drain in the holder after used. However, the biggest knife tends have few spots of rust but there can be washed off easily. I am pretty happy with it.

This knife block is beautiful, serves our needs very well. My husband made a minor modification to hold our scissors. It takes up very little space and holds all the knives we use frequently.

The knife block fits all of my knives with easy and seems well built and does not move when removing knife. Attached a magnetic to the side to add my kitchen shears. The slots were to narrow for kitchen shear. I would recommend it.

What can I say, it works as expected. I bought it expressedly for slicing bread and it does it well on my homemade bread. But the effort to change from the non-serrated blade that comes with the slicer to this optional serrated blade is enough of a hassel that I won't be swaping back and forth whimsically since the serrated blade can do most everything the smooth one does. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is that I think something this sharp should come with a storage container of some sort. I am planning to purchase the blade changer holder if I can find a source so each blade could have it's own blade changer holder for storage. This would make blade changing easier if the blade to be changed to is already in a blade changing tool, and the spare blade changing tool is free to be used to remove the blade on the slicer. This would make it easier to switch between the two blades -at least it would make me feel safer.

My cuts of bread white, wheat, rye, and multigrain) all come out looking like store quality. As long as you have lined the bread up correctly on the device and the quality of your bread you can get many slices per loaf. My usual standard loaf has 20 slices but I have taken it up to 24. No ragged edges, and seems to slice through the crust on the top and sides without difficulty. If you own the slicer, and plan to slice bread, I would highly recommend this.

This set of silverware is beautiful. We are so glad we ordered it. The design is very elegant and will go well with the new dishes and glasses we just got. Our only complaint is that the description says the silverware has a satin finish, which is true of most of it, but the eating surface and part of the handles are made of stainless steel. So those sections show fingerprints and smudges. We were expecting a satin finish on all of it. Otherwise, the silverware is perfect. Definitely would recommend it.

Very sharp blade and comfortable handle. Excellent quality for the money. Only possible drawback is the box indicates it is not recommended for lefties. My wife, a lefty, says she has no problem slicing but has cut her fingers several times while chopping. I, a righty, have no such problems. Well worth the purchase price but be aware if you are, or you're buying the knife for, a lefty.

Wow, it is sharp! Wish it had come with a sheath by which to store it. Be careful when you are washing it! LM

I purchased this knife to round out a set I'd bought but am not that pleased with this knife. It has small serrated edges that shred meat rather than carve it. I have put it away and don't use it, bought another one instead. Like the J.A.Henckels brand but not the Eversharp. Because is J.A.Henckels this model is good as a cheaper option but if you have the money go with the more expensive line.

I used to work in a cooking supply store, and I saw so many of these returned. The idea is great but the lock breaks way too easily. Most of the OXO Good Grips items are great, but they need to work on this one. If you want to risk it, get it.

Last Xmas (1999) I bought my wife two of these. The locking mechanism broke on the first one in January of 2000. The locking mechanism on the second one broke in mid 2000. From what I'm reading in the other reviews, this is a common happening.

From that part of it, the thing probably deserves 1 star. However, the thing still works as a can openener, even though the lock broke. Taken strictly on the can opener part of it, it's got a nice grip feels better than most can openers, but probably isn't worth the extra money.

Overall, it's just "OK". If you like the rest of the Oxo line, you'll probably like this although I bet your lock will break before too long, and it'll just be any other can opener then.

I bought this because it is simply good design. Best damn can opener until the plastic latching mechanism failed. Being a self-righteous designer who believes in buying good design I went out a bought another. Same thing happened.

OXO is an excellent company with many good products -but the life expectancy of this puppy is less that a year.

After having a mediocre electric can opener for years, I got the OXO locking opener at the store. At first it looked questionable... plastic handles, a little release button on one side. Then my friends and I opened a half dozen cans for a party the day after I bought it and it was like a hot knife through butter. Nobody complained about having "can duty" at all for a change. Once you click the handles together you just have to hold the can level so you don't spill no squeezing involved. The knob turns very easily, which was also a surprise. Never in a million years did I expect it to work this well. Even though it's marketed as the low end model of OXO can openers, I would highly recommend it. The higher end OXO models are just glitz for more $$.

This *seems* to be the perfect knife block. It's attractive, the size is perfect, and it holds my knives just right.. But even though I'd been warned about this by another amazon reviewer and had thought I'd carefully set my knives in it to make it balanced more heavily toward the back, one time when removing a knife the whole thing tipped forward, spilling all my knives out onto the counter. Thank goodness the knife block was back in the corner and not near the edge of the counter at the time, and thank goodness I'm fairly nimble & coordinated and managed to keep all the knives on the counter & none of them on my feet, without getting cut. I've got several very sharp knives.. this was a pretty scary moment! I am worried about the rest of my family if someone else gets hurt I'll feel somewhat responsible as I chose this knife block, nixing others as too ugly, too massive (well now I see why massive is perhaps a good idea for a knife block!) or not holding the right number of knives. This knife block is in every other way perfect for what I want but unless I can come up with a way to make it more stable, I won't be able to keep using it. I'm going to try making the back part of the base heavier. Maybe I can attach something at the back/bottom that will hold it down. If I figure something out that I'm happy with, I'll update my review.

The only other knife block that gives you complete control over the knife sizes is the Kaboosh, which I really disliked. This takes up minimal counter space, is easy to use and is easy to keep organized.

I just ordered a second one and I was a little frustrated that it is a slightly different angling than the one I bought last year. For the angles to match I needed to put 2 rubber bumpers on the bottom of the new one, but that is nothing negative about the block. It was so useful that I wanted a second one; I keep Kosher, and can have 2 knife blocks in less width on my counter than a single wooden one.

Easy to use and fully customizable to any knife size, and it takes up less counter space and the interior is washable if it gets grimy in the future. It is a bit pricey, ut the convenience is worth the expense, especially since it is a one time cost.

I've been looking for this knife block for years.

I have a number of knives from various makers, and they don't fit into a standard knife block. This holder has a fan-folded insert that takes any size of knife, and any number of them. The aluminum case has a nice solid weight to it (no risk of tipping and spewing out knives), and the fan-folded insert comes out for cleaning. I think it's a brilliant design and great looking, too.

I was excited to find a block that would accomodate all my knives without damage, and was attractive to look at and take up less counter space. When it arrived my first thought was that it seemed very lightweight and less than stable. For the price, I expected something sturdier. But, I went ahead and put in my knives (ten of them) and knife steel. I have top quality knives that are fairly heavy in weight. The information from most sellers as well as the maker indicates it will hold 40 knives or other utensils. It won't come even close to that unless you are storing tiny items (perhaps silverware sized). While it may technically have slots for forty items, due to needing some space for the handles to fit, as well as just allocating room for the thickness of the blades so as not to have to cram any in there, I could perhaps use every third slot or so. Having put all eleven items into the stand, I let go. It immediately tipped forward and fell onto the counter. All of the heavier knives were placed at the top, all the small ones at the bottom. After removing everything and putting them back, spacing the knives far more closely than I would like (makes getting them out and putting them back a hassle as the handles are now very close together), it will stand on its own, but I certainly wouldn't call it stable and it makes me a bit nervous. If I put anything in the lower quarter of the block (even a paring knife) it tips forward again. Maybe I can attach it to some sort of platform to stabilize it? Nice idea, poor execution, and definitely a case of form prioritized over function. If you want something pretty for your five lightweight knives, buy it. If (like me) you want something that is also functional and sturdy, don't waste the money.

This is an excellent product. It fits inside an existing drawer and makes it a silver storage chest. Its easy to retrieve the pieces you want to use and then return them. Silver or silverplate keeps very well, rarely needing any polishing. I have had two for many years and just bought another for myself and for a couple of my daughters. They are great. I highly recommend them for convenience and for reliability.

When we got married, we received some very nice Guy Degrenne cutlery, and we were at a loss as to how to store it in a drawer in our kitchen (we didn't want a chest), yet still have it organized in stacks so that the pieces didn't scratch each other. We didn't want one that was made to keep closed (like a zippered one), as we wanted easy access to our everyday cutlery. This drawer liner does a great job and has slots for 12 knives to be individually held by the blade above the other items. The silverware stacks nicely in the slots, which are wider than the narrow part of the neck of our pieces.

I had a hard time bringing myself to fork out $80 for a bread knife, but I'm glad I did. This is a superbly crafted knife, and very useful. It does a great job biting into crusty loaves of bread, and it's so amazingly sharp you can cut tomatoes without any sign of tearing. It fits my (largish) hand perfectly, and the slight upward curve of the blade really helps when you've cut almost through the loaf: it keeps you from needing to bang your knuckles on the cutting board trying to get that last little bit of crust on the bottom. I love it!

I've had these knives for years. My mother bought me the entire set (6 steak knives, and the 5 piece set sold here). I've had them for at least 6 years. I begged my mom for Cutco knives as we had them at home and I loved them. She couldn't justify spending that amount of money on knives, especially since I didn't cook. She found this set at Sharper Image and bought them for me. When I moved back home while attending law school, I brought the knives with me.

I can honestly tell you that the Cutco knives sit in the drawer, where they have for years since I brought back these knives. They make our Cutco set look like plastic utensils. They never ever need sharpening and are so durable. They said they are dishwasher safe, but we always handwash just in case (wouldn't want the handle to deteriorate and the knife not be usuable because the handle was destroyed). Either way, I've been searching for another set to give my family since I've moved out. I can find this 5-piece set, but not the 6-piece steak knife set, unfortunately. Either way, these are the best knives money can buy and they are so cheap compared to many other high-quality knives.

They are amazing! I hope you enjoy them as much as me and my family have for years!

I can get under fat and silver skin and cut it right off with easy. For the money, 20 bucks, this will be your favorite knife!

The Swissmar cheese slicer looks and feels like a quality product. It is pleasing to look at and has a nice weight in the hand. Unfortunately the main selling point, the adjustability is the weak point. The first slicer Amazon sent was broken; the wire was loose and the right hand adjusting would not tighten. I sent it back. The second one seemed fine, the wire was taught and the adjustment knobs worked. Unfortunately after a few uses the left hand knob became very hard to tighten and required a pair of pliers to tighten it enough to stop it slipping. I would suggest this is not an item to buy online. Better that you are able to test the item before purchase.

After buying some of the top name brand versions of this product from a variety of stores I realized that plastic just doesn't work for this tool. Every one I bought broke (snapped in 1 or 2 places). Came to Amazon and wanted a metal one, found this, bought it and have been very happy. It works, it's sturdy, it's easy to clean. Basically does the job that I need.

This slicer is heavy duty. It is not flimsy or cheap feeling. I deduct one star because the cutting wire seems to collect a lot of cheese bits and you don't get a clean even slice. I don't know if it's the roller or maybe the wire is too heavy of a gauge. I might try replacing the wire with something thinner. See if that works. But overall it's a good quality slicer and I'm pretty happy with it. I cut the cheese a lot.

This cheese slicer worked OK for about 16 months, although it never sliced much cheese. The wire broke last week, and it seems Amazon does not sell replacement wires for this model.

When the wire broke, my guest, who was using the slicer to cut some cheddar cheese, said, "I guess this is only for cream cheese."

[Update July 13, 2011: I just found replacement wires on the Swissmar site, which are offered by Amazon for another Swissmar product. Here is what Swissmar said: "Wire replacement for # D1024 Dalla Piazza branded Cheese Slicer. Also fits Swissmar branded Adjustable Wire Cheese Slicer #S3009. Just undo screws on the sides of the slicer, replace wire, tighten screws. SKU: D0024."

Amazon sells these wires for $2.00 each. Search this Amazon site for "Dalla Piazza Replacement Wire for Adjustable Cheese Slicer."

I am still sticking with my one-star rating because these wires should last much longer, if not for a lifetime.]

The knives arrived today and look great, but I am disappointed in the color of the handle. Amazon's picture makes it look like the wood was treated with a light stain, which would mave matched our cheese board perfectly. Unfortuately for me, the handle are a natural wood color nice, but not what I wanted. I'm not sure if I will keep them or return them, but I just wanted other buyers to be aware of what they really look like.
